Obama to nominate Tom Perez as next Labor Secretary

Don Ryan / AP, file

Tom Perez, the assistant U.S. attorney general for civil rights and former secretary of Maryland's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama on Monday will nominate Tom Perez, head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, as his next labor secretary, a White House official said.

Perez, a Harvard-educated civil rights attorney whose nomination was championed by Hispanic groups, would replace Hilda Solis, who resigned in January.

Obama has been criticized for a lack of diversity in his Cabinet choices so far, particularly by Latinos, who are an influential voting bloc and have pushed for more representation in government.

If confirmed by the Senate, Perez, the son of immigrants from the Dominican Republican, will take on a prominent role in the Cabinet as Obama seeks to raise the minimum wage and advance immigration reform, two key pledges he made at the beginning of his second term.

The White House described Perez as a pragmatist who led the Justice Department in settling three major cases on behalf of families targeted by unfair mortgage lending practices, and who stepped up enforcement of human trafficking laws.

But Perez is expected to face tough scrutiny from Republicans. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has already voiced concerns.

Leading House Democrat says job creation, not deficit cutting, is immediate priority

An internal government investigation released last week found the Justice Department office that enforces voting laws - part of the civil rights division overseen by Perez - has been beset by political infighting.

The report, by the Justice Department's Inspector General, was critical of Perez for what it called an incomplete statement he gave in 2010 about a case of alleged voter intimidation.

Perez began his career as a civil rights prosecutor at the Justice Department, and later was head of the civil rights office at the Department of Health and Human Services.

He spent time working as a special counsel to the late Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy on civil rights issues.

Perez served in local government in the Washington suburb of Montgomery County, Maryland. Later, he was labor secretary in Maryland's state government, where he worked on reforms for state lending and foreclosure rules.

His wife, Ann Marie Staudenmaier, is a lawyer with the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.

The Heeeerverd clan, along with Wall Street "Fat Cats", continues in this administration.

Maybe Perez will have the guts to FIRE the UNCONSTITUTIONAL NLRB employees Mr. Obama "appointed" during the Congressional recess.

What I really like to see....infighting between the DOJ and other "Progressive agencies" instead of going after individuals and businesses.

ldo, you are an IDiOt...for wanting to see infighting...

Now back to this news

Perez as a pragmatist

good choice

Time to increase the minimum wage. When people feel rewarded for their hard work, they are more likely to feel happy, their morale higher, their productivity better, their employers reaping more profits.

P.S.:

Good choice. Perez has a lot of experiences at many levels of government - evidence from the news:

Oh yeah lets make easyer to become a citizen, hell lets just say if you are here you can stay, et food stamps and vote. That way China, Iran, Iraq. can all get a good grip on this country. Then with the cartels from the south we will be in great shape. You are either a morron or an invader.

As for you Pig, you should study what you are talking about be fore you talk. The minimum wage is not designed to be the average wage. It is to keep employers from paying next to nothing for low level jobs, like flipping burgers, to rise the pay on those jobs now would just lose those jobs also. No what they need him doing is helping reesstablish jobs here, really jobs not McD's, and walmart. we need manufacturing jobs to keep this country stong. Taxes on imports, no tax cuts for American Companies that send jobs over seas ect....

Another appointment by Obama that's not an African-American. Hey Obama, when the Black Caucus said they wanted "diversity" in the cabinet appointments, they meant that they wanted BLACKS appointed. They don't care about getting latinos nominated.

Either Obama is racist for not nominating blacks or he is correct in his hiring practices that no blacks are qualified.

Which is it liberals? Where is affirmitive action when you need it?

The Cabinet that Obama assembled during his first presidential term is a throwback to those constructed by every president (with the exception of Richard Nixon) from Johnson to George H.W. Bush. Like them, he could find just one black person to fill a position in his Cabinet. When pressed as to why they had a near lily-white Cabinet, many of the post-civil rights era presidents offered up some version of this sad refrain: Race was not a factor. I picked the best qualified person for the job.

Implied in their answer is that among the tens of millions of blacks, they could find just one person who had the intelligence and experience to serve in their Cabinet. Bill Clinton broke that bad tradition. He named seven blacks to Cabinet posts. George W. Bush put four blacks in his Cabinet. Obama has just one: Attorney General Eric Holder.

      .

Taxpayers bailed out major banks and other corporations such as AIG during the Great Recession that was caused by the Wall Street and other corporate fat cats. The middle class not only bailed out corporations, these people of the Middle class have suffered more from the recession due to job losses and forclosures.

Now the economy is doing better, unemployment is lower, it's time to reward the hard working middle class with an increase in minimum wage.

With this pick, the President has continued to promote diversity inside his White House. The country is moving in the right direction.

@Poigotry..how does raising the minimum wage help the middle class????? All raising the minimum wage does is make the U.S. less competitive in the international market by making our goods cost more. As less U.S. goods sell overseas, more U.S. companies close or lay-off. As more U.S. companies lay-off, more people enter the ranks of welfare and food stamps, the trademark of the Obama Administration.

People who are earning minimum wage are not in the middle class so increasing the minimum wage does nothing to help the middle class, it might actually weaken it considering that the cost of employing someone will be raised.

Taxpayers bailed out major banks and other corporations such as AIG during the Great Recession that was caused by the Wall Street and other corporate fat cats. The middle class not only bailed out corporations, these people of the Middle class have suffered more from the recession due to job losses and forclosures.

The government and the Fed created the Great recession, Wall Street/main street just blindly followed. There should have been no bailouts and no stimulus.

higher minimum wage, higher morale, better productivity, more disposable income for the poor who can spend the new income, more demand for the market, it's going to benefit all, including the middle class.

The higher wages don't just come out of thin air, the employer has to pay them. The government keeps increasing the cost of employment through regulations, taxes, minimum wage laws and by increasing the legal exposure employers face. This drives up the cost of consumer prices and keeps wages stagnant. How does that benefit the middle class or the poor? It is a detriment. In a free market prices would fall. In our economy prices continually rise faster than our incomes. This can all be traced back to government intervention and the minimum wage laws are a very good example of that.

Yep, small businesses will certainly HIRE more people if the minimum wage is raised. That minimum wage is really going to help the Middle Class so the poor folks will be left in the dust AGAIN.

Wait a minute....ObamaCare has already started having an effect on small businesses because they are laying off more people or having them work less hours.

Time to have Trumpka use the revolving Oval Office door again to discuss this matter. Maybe the Unions could get involved, or maybe another campaign tour to Detroit.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has cost me over a thousand dollars in wages a month extra since becoming law 1/1/13. By the way, Perez' department is not just infighting, they are discriminating against conservatives in the so-called justice department, when the conservatives agree with Obama's liberal cronies. "What's the minimum wage in your State?"

Oregon's minimum wage is $8.95 per hour; with exceptions for tipped employees, some student workers, and other exempt occupations. Oregon's minimum wage is greater than the Federal Minimum Wage.

$18,616 is the income of a minimum wage employee, working full-time, 40-hours per week.

$19,090 per year is the "poverty income level" for a family of 3 in Oregon (Father, Mother, 1 child)

$23,050 per year is the "poverty income level" for a family of 4 in Oregon (Father, Mother, 2 children)

        .

You do the math, and then give us your definitions of what represents employment fairness and equity, ...and what represents servitude and bondage.

        .

        .

Your diatribe is nonsensical. And resorting to multiple profanities to state your point does not make it more forceful, nor make it more true. It merely makes you appear foolish and ineloquent.

Do you actually believe that where a person happens to live, their having more education, or having a different socio-political point of view from your own makes them not "real"? Those are pretty peculiar value judgements.

Earning an income above the poverty line does not mean you meet the definition of "middle class". Your post suggests you are unaware of the actual socio-economic definitions of the terms used by the government.

There is a vast disparity between "poverty" and "middle class"; they do not share a line of demarcation.

Perhaps the most profoundly repressive aspect about living below the poverty line - and the reason why it is so imperative that "minimum wage" be a true "living wage" - is that ones opportunities and options for climbing out of poverty (through education, training, pay raises, etc) are limited or non-existent when there is not even enough income to pay for food and housing each week despite carrying full-time employment.

And life for those in poverty is too often just one missed paycheck away from desperation, and having to turn to the state for assistance. How is our society advantaged by keeping a significant percentage of working class people continually on the edge of financial desperation, and forced to turn to the state for assistance (which is paid for by tax dollars)?

You may want to reexamine your 'Moral Compass', as it appears you may have lost your compassion pointer somewhere along the course of your life, and replaced it with anger and profanity. That's unfortunate. Hard working fellow human beings struggling to climb out of poverty deserve our respect, and normal human empathy and compassion; not our scorn and ridicule. Food for thought ...

Let me let you in a something that everybody already knows, if the price of gas goes to 6 dollars a gallon then everything goes up in price...except the price people get paid to work. Thats right the people will suffer before someone's business suffers. Think about what you are saying about how you think the wages should go up because , just like gas, the price of labor and food and everything we people need to survive goes up in price. It won't change anything because when prices go up taxes go up even more then you have to buy cheaper food, gas, tires, ...pretty much have to buy china made products to make ends meet. Revolution will be the only answer left in America. Guns and ammo are the next necessity along with growing your own food

Perez had served as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) from January 2007, when he was appointed to that position by Governor Martin O'Malley, until his October 2009 confirmation by the United States Senate as Assistant Attorney General

Good choice if Obama wants to continue vote pandering for his party from the Latino community. Hillary probably agrees while she readies for 2016 but Benghazi will haunt her forever.

Why not just choose Abbie Hoffman or William Ayers. Both are just as disgusting as this anti-American pig.

Why am I even explaining this to you. Scheese!

OK, baggers is a derivation of tea bagger, what members of the tea party called themselves before somebody explained to them what it meant. Hence, "bagger".

Still not quite as distasteful as President Bush's head on a stick in HBO's "Game of Thrones".

Just for grins and giggles and to throw off the pundit class, how about republicans NOT oppose an Obama nominee and just hold a regular hearing, vote him out of committee to the full Senate and they just hold a standard vote to confirm him. This would be a two day process, save lots of time and money, and leave the Senators with time to deal with real issues facing the country instead of grandstanding for weeks over a non-issue. That would really get people's attention!
