Obama's meeting with GOP conference: Cordial, but no white smoke of consensus

President Obama's Wednesday meeting is the second on Capitol Hill to discuss his second-term priorities. NBC's Brian Williams reports

Four thousand miles from the papal conclave in Rome, President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans held their own closed-door meeting Wednesday, as the president continued a high-profile campaign for bipartisan comity in Washington.

But -- while Obama told reporters that he informed GOP attendees of the papal news -- there’s still no white smoke of consensus over the Capitol.

House Speaker John Boehner talks about President Obama's meeting with House members on Capitol Hill Wednesday.

Though Republicans described the 90-minute meeting  as cordial -- with the GOP conference even offering Obama a standing ovation before his remarks -- members said the talks yielded no major breakthroughs on the budgetary dispute that has locked the two  parties in political combat for months.

“Republicans want to balance the budget, the president doesn’t,” House Speaker John Boehner told reporters after the meeting. “Republicans want to solve our long term debt problem, the president doesn’t.”

“But having said that, today was a good start,” he added. “I hope that these kinds of discussions can continue even though we have very real differences, [because] our job is to find common ground.”

Boehner said the tone of the meeting was “respectful” and that the discussion was “candid” and “productive.”

House Budget Committee chairman and former Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, who lunched with Obama last week, said that the president “did himself some good.”

But other members described the session as little more than rhetorical leftovers.

“His whole talk was just a bunch of platitudes and no substance to it,” griped Rep. Paul Broun of Georgia.

And Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama charged that the president “wasn’t saying anything new.”

Sources in the room told reporters that Obama spoke about infrastructure and  touched on gun control and immigration legislation.

House Administration Committee head Candice Miller also asked the president about the cancellation of White House tours due to budget cuts, a move that critics say is merely a play for publicity.

"I asked the president if there was some way in the spirit of reaching out and working together if we could help him with his problem in the White House," Miller said after the meeting. "He said it was a determination of the Secret Service, and the math wasn't as easy to do as just giving up the congressional White House party or the picnic or what have you.”

President Barack Obama, escorted by House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving, right, arrives on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, March 13, 2013, for closed-door talks with House Speaker John Boehner and the House Republican Conference to discuss the budget.

The visit was the first meeting between the president and the full GOP conference since 2011, when members came to the White House to discuss the federal deficit. Obama last came to the Capitol to address House Republicans on their own turf in January 2009.

The president’s visit to the Capitol is the second of three trips down Pennsylvania Avenue this week. On Tuesday, he met with Democratic allies in the Senate; on Thursday, he is expected to address Senate Republicans. Last week, he shared meals with Republican lawmakers from both chambers.

But while his bipartisan outreach has received good reviews from participants --  with Republican senators calling the meetings cordial and candid -- some on the Hill are skeptical that the president’s calculation is more about headlines than harmony.

“I think that the general sense of the conference is the president is coming here because he saw his approval ratings dropping, and people were asking ‘why isn’t he in Washington negotiating?’” said one GOP aide before the meeting. “And we ask: Do we feel like we’re going to get different answers than scripted answers?”

Those Republicans found fodder Tuesday in a National Journal story that quoted an unnamed White House aide saying the outreach efforts are “a joke.”

“I hope you all (in the media) are happy because we’re doing it for you,” the senior official reportedly said in the story.

The targets of the president’s outreach say that the true value of the series of meetings will become apparent as negotiations over pending legislation continues.

"He's the president and I wholeheartedly want to believe everything that he says, but after everything that has occurred I'm going to wait for the action," Rep Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., said. "If the president is sincere and really wants to work with us then that'll show itself over the next several months as we try to work on some of the biggest challenges this country has ever faced."

Still, despite the skepticism, the rare occasion of a presidential visit was enough to prompt an unexpected warning from GOP leaders: no asking for souvenirs.

A House leadership aide said that at a morning meeting, members were warned not to take pictures of the president and not ask for autographs --  to make sure the meeting ran on time.

And as for the white smoke?

Asked about the results of his own “conclave,” the president joked that the metaphor isn’t exactly a perfect match.

“I think you’re stretching the analogy,”  he said, laughing.

"“Republicans want to balance the budget, the president doesn’t,” House Speaker John Boehner told reporters after the meeting. “Republicans want to solve our long term debt problem, the president doesn’t.”"

Of course Democrats want to balance the budget, they did it before when Clinton was in office.

Of course Democrats want to solve our long term Debt problem, which Democrats also did before when Clinton was in office.

The difference comes because Republicans want to do things that could possibly cause harm to middle class and low income families while we are still trying to recover from the 2nd Great Depression and the last disasterous round of GOP Economic Policies, and while Republicans are effectively Stalling our Economic Recovery.

We already know the GOP would do about anything to force failure on America and the American People because they're trying to avoid Democrats from being on record for the 2nd time of having corrected the entire United States Economy after a disasterous Republican Administration.

Some republican leaders are still playing 'hard-to-get,' and they are the losers in 2012 elections - so I don't get it.

2014 & 2016 coming. Why do these Republicans want more train wreck?? So they can make US a one-party (DEM) dominant country, then blame a conspiracy on the DEMs? I don't get it.

There was NEVER any intention on getting ANYTHING done with the GOP. Dog and Pony show and maybe a Mr. Biden shotgun vs Assault weapon show in the Rose Garden.

Mr. Obama better hurry....he will miss meeting with his $ 500,000 per person campaign contributors for "Benghazi" Clinton.

You've got your messengers wrong.

It is the American People who keep trying to tell the GOP that we voted AGAINST the "Ryan Plan" last November but Republicans still keep coming back with the same things we've already voted against.

That's how the GOP is, they absolutely refuse to listen to the American People, so we're going to have to speak to them at the polls, and just keep voting against Republicans until they finally decide to hear the American People.

C'mon Ms. Piggy, those GOP Congressmen were winners in THEIR election. Yes, the President, a Democrat, retained the White House, but remember, it's about compromise and our President needs to be willing to compromise. Give real cuts. Something that goes towards a balanced budget, then he can ask for the closing of so called loopholes (remember, what some call loopholes, are legal deductions and tax breaks, so let's call them what they are instead of making them seem illegal).

Our President said the people wanted to increase taxes on the wealthy. I won't define wealthy because everyone has an opinion on that, but the GOP agreed to a compromise with raising taxes on those making 400K or more. Now they are being asked again for another tax increase without any real substantive cuts.

Democrats are not going to compromise on the Big 3 issues and Republicans insist that they are the starting point for any so-called 'negotiation.' So in the mean time, we watch the rooster fight with nothing of any consequence materializing. Since the GOP agreed to kick the can down the road for the balance of the fiscal year, they can play games all Summer. The cheese doesn't become binding until October 1st when the existing CR expires.

I read that Richard lots of numbers. It is rather scary that our health insurance rates could go up as much as 100%. Very scary. I'm a bit skeptical, because I believe the worse case scenario is being tossed out, but big increases are apparently on the way.

So much for AFFORDABLE in the Affordable Care Act.

How's the health care package going that was proposed over 5 years ago ?

Of course Democrats want to balance the budget, they did it before when Clinton was in office.

LOL,

As Obama visited House Republicans - he will return on Thursday to meet with House Democrats - the Senate Budget Committee, run by Democratic Senator Patty Murray, began debating its counter-proposal to the Ryan budget.

That plan would cut U.S. deficits by around $1.85 trillion over 10 years with an equal mix of spending cuts and tax increases on the wealthy and corporations.

Annual U.S. deficits under her plan would hover in the $400 billion-$600 billion range for much of the next decade. But Democrats argue that this would allow for stronger near-term job growth than Republicans' balanced-budget vision.

As an Independent I look at both sides of the story and I can see that both sides are at fault. We as a country are in trouble, in the past 36 years, the GOP has been in the White House (WH) for 20 and the Dems for 16, with Obama in for four more that will make it an even 20 to 20. Now, with the GOP in the WH the debt grew 8.3 trillion and with the Dems 7.1 trillion, now that 7.1 was at the end of Obama's first term, he has four more years to add to the 7.1 trillion the Dems have done. Since the Dems believe that Clinton did no wrongs with the debt, got new for you, the debt grew 1.4 T while he was in office and the balanced budget was short term and there was only a 258 billion dollar surplus, not 5 trillion as I have seen some dems brag about. As far as both houses of congress, they have flipped back and forth as to who was in power, and both houses and both parties are neck and neck as to who caused the problems this country is in. Bottom line, both parties need to change their base thoughts, taxes need to be changed and the out of control spending has to be reigned in.

@American Girl-724855, and those the same...

Nobama the Clown crammed a healthcare bill down the American peoples throats, with dems hand in hand, and Pelosi sticking out his behind telling us "you don't need to see it, its too complicated to understand, and too good to be true"... and Nobama telling every American, we could hear the debate before the vote (that show was cancelled by Nobama himself), and how great this new Nobama care was going to be for everyone, because it was going to even the insurance game, giving everyone a chance at AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE... after its all said and done, going into effect, we find out, those who COULD afford insurance, are going to see a 20%-100% hike in costs. That there is no possible way it can be done even if we did raise taxes, you cant raise them enough to provide all Americans who didn't have coverage, like promised. Don't get me wrong, I still even tho I knew better held out hope, reserved hope, yet hope all the same, even tho I do have a job!

You also didn't even read your own copy and paste... it said nothing about democrats, other than the main one Nobama the Clown, who is the fool, traitor, Islamist-racist, driving this once hard working nation so far in the ground, its unbelievably PATHETIC, to the point a grade schooler can produce better math to see none of Nobamas proposals to date are worth a used sh!t ticket!

you want to blame the GOP for putting us into this mess? are you insane!? GOP hasn't been able to pass the senate vote, majority held by Dems... The lazy and the freeloading entitled class is coming to see its day... come to a brick wall. WE the WORKING, cant afford to care for the lazy freeloaders any longer. there has been little if any actual job growth that doesn't come from taxpayer dollars (your stupid to believe otherwise), and the major taxbreaks given to say GE, Boeing, and so on from last years they not only paid little to nothing, but got money back! that wasn't a Bush loophole... that was a Nobama the injected one, to pay off some $$$ favors to some generous donations for election, and the coming one he had ahead. meantime pushing everything on the republicans, your, and your kinds deaf ears and blind eyes, ran to kiss a$$....

the little man (small business) is still getting sh!t on by the dem in office, and their greedy ilk!

if you don't like how its being done in Washington, talk to your so called president YOU voted for, and put the blame where it belongs for once in your life, rather than follow suit like a lost retarded sheep mistaking a clown for your mother. try doing your own independent research once in your lazy good for nothing life, and see who is, and isn't telling the truth... its already been well proven Nobama the clown has sold the American people lemon after lemon, and people like yourself cant do anything other than make kool aide out of it....

"If one of those 3 things is my Social Security and Medicare" FYI that's two things not one. It is Odumbas plan to phase out Medicare with Odumbacare and he is doing nothing to fund SS. Both will be saved with the GOP plan.

A vote for Odumba was not a vote against the "Ryan Plan"

A majority of Odumbas supporters were the "low information voters" and racists. There is no way Odumba gets 97% of the black vote if he wasn't black, and while half of Odumba voters were informed on the issues and voted for Odumba because they understood his positions and agreed with them, the half of Odumba voters probably never heard of Ryan or his plan even on election day. Ask a random Odumba voter why they voted for him and they will tell you about all the free stuff their are going to get.

The country voted for republicans in the congress to keep Odumba in check, and we won.

Obama told reporters that...there’s still no white smoke of consensus over the Capitol.

Between President Obama and the brutal GOP, there cannot be a consensus. The goals of President Obama and the Republicans are a dichotomy. The Republicans are determined to collapse the middle class and bury the poor. The right wing wants to annihilate every economic, political and social platform that sustains the middle class. Their anti-human agenda includes evaporating Social Security, sinking Medicare and Medicaid, dumping W.I.C., dismantling federal support for college aid, union busting, outsourcing jobs, privatizing civil service, shutting down Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and placing the TAX burden on the middle class.

Without a viable and robust middle class, no country can survive.

Does the GOP care? NO.

In these budget "negotiations," the GOP's arrogance is amazing. In the November 2012 elections, at the expense of the majority of our citizens, the American people tossed Romney's and Ryan's grand scheme to continue to prop up the 1%.

Has the right-wing learned anything? NO.

Maybe Obama should ask the GOP: how will the market deal with sick seniors, the disabled, the struggling single mom and the suburban family that is trying to put 2 children through college? The GOP's silence will be heard around the world.

America, in the 2014 and 2016 elections vote the GOP, false patriots, out of office!

Cancel the Sequester.

Forward!

Thankfully America also had the wisdom to keep the House in Repub hands as we need adults managing through the financial and ecomomic fiasco that has taken place during Obamas term.

Every one of those cuts pushes the liberal cause which is? ya just what is it they want to do with the budget?

Obama gave a speech criticizing Bush for being unpatriotic because he increased the debt 5 trillion in his 8 years as presidency. Obama was really worked up about the national debt and accused Bush of selling out the country to China. Well now with Obama putting nearly 7 trillion in debt in 4 years he says that the debt is just fine and we need to spend even more and not worry until the debt is over 20 trillion. Obama has not been able to get one his budgets passed by the senate in 4 years. Even the Democrats won't even vote for his outrageous budgets. The senate Democrats have some pretty crazy budget ideas but not as bad as Obama. Ryan may not have a perfect budget but let us see the budget from Obama for comparison. Great more of the dog and pony show from the worlds biggest over spenders and failed ecomonics professors.

Here is what is inside the Obama care provisions for the average American...a doubling of their health insurance premium next year...by the bone head of budgets Obama, Pelosi, and Reed. Also the truth about the doubling of taxes in the Obama care is now a fact due to the CBO,

Tax
Prof: ObamaCare Tax Increases Are Double Original Estimate

The Joint Committee on
Taxation recently released a 96 page report on the tax provisions
associated with Affordable Care Act. The report describes the 21 tax increases
included in Obamacare, totaling $1.058 trillion – a steep increase from initial
assessment, according to the Tax Prof Blog.
The summer 2012 estimate is nearly twice the $569 billion estimate produced at
the time of the passage of the law in March 2010.

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2013/03/tax-prof-obamacare-tax-increases-are.html

(AP) - Some Americans could see their insurance bills double next year as the
health care overhaul law expands coverage to millions of people.

The nation's big health insurers say they expect premiums — or the cost for
insurance coverage — to rise from 20 to 100 percent for millions of people due
to changes that will occur when key provisions of the Affordable Care Act roll
out in January 2014.

Mark Bertolini, CEO of Aetna Inc., one of the nation's largest insurers,
calls the price hikes "premium rate shock."

"We've done all the math, we've shared it with all the regulators, we've
shared it with all the people in Washington that need to see it, and I think
it's a big concern," Bertolini said during the company's annual meeting with
investors in December.

This is another example of why the legislators should be able to read and understand a bill before passing it. By the way the current regulations promulgated by the new government agencies for Obama care tops 20,000 pages already. So much paper and so little common sense. Typical government morons.

dear mr. president,

in case nobody told you, the republican party wants you to fail, even if it kills America.

you got that wrong... everything the clown has done to this point has been a FAIL one after another on the tax payers expence, you must not have a job to realize whats in store for the working American? Greece ring a bell or 2?

They will fight you till your last day in office because they hate the fact that you have been so good at cleaning their mess. Because your success makes it hard to hide their failures.

other than refer to my previous comment to your nonsense... government $ does not fall from trees, it comes from the "working class" and in case you haven't been keeping up, the only working class jobs in masse are and have been government jobs since this fool took office. you don't make money by giving it away, and getting 1/10 back in taxes.

If you had been president right after clinton, we would all be so much better off. But thank you for saving the economy. thank you for getting bin ladden, thank you for trying to get us fair health care and so much more. Mr President, I salute you.

he hasn't saved the economy, he didn't get bin Laden (seals did that) and your so called fair healthcare is going to break the working Americans back (in case you obviously haven't been even close to keeping up on CURRENT EVENTS...

I must say, that was either the most ever sarcastic rant I have ever heard from anyone, or you need to get off the drugs....

It's funny how the righties seem to just believe its the end. Most people in this country run their own budgets on deficits very few have cash to pay for a house so they mortgage for that matter even a car. Most businesses would never survive without their debt. Mergers and acquisitions would almost always include financing. The economy just doesn't grow unless you take on debt, it keeps cash flowing. All this talk about balancing the budget at the expense of growth is just political silliness. If you make the commitment to pay down debt while you have some growth you will be fine. This is the problem when money should have been used to pay the debt a tax cut was insisted upon.

I think what many of you people here don't understand is the Free Trade lie that America has now had for the last thirty five years is what has destroyed what made America great in the first place. We Were the Greatest Manufacturing Country in the World??

yup, we once were, and free trade didn't have much to do with it. we were paying out the nose for the same quality, at a more expensive price (thank union), with a crap return policy. Zenith was out the door becuae even before free trade came along, it was more economical to buy a product from Japan, woth quality, and price... these places closed their own doors, not free trade.

Now look what we are, the greatest importer in the world of Communist Junk with the highest trade deficits in the world. Face it people, our corrupt system has destroyed the middle class people who used to pay taxes in to the US treasury. Now they are on food stamps and working for China Mart selling all of their Communist products that are total JUNK. There is no hope..... Until............

as an American I can tell you this... you get what you pay for unless you buy American... fact is, try to find an authentic American made product, and its next to impossible unless it comes from small business, from America. Even American made cars are only a fraction made in America, why? because with the cost of labor added into the final product, Americans cant afford the whole cost. business loses money, and if you think it stops there, next stop would be making nothing, and in the hole... mandatory increase in raise, pension, and so on, make it impossible to produce anything from American soil affordable and long term.

Until these corupt corporations CEO's realize they are the one's killing America and decide to bring our good paying jobs back home where Made in the USA means something again....

until the economy can deal with its self to the point you can bring back America's jobs don't look for this in even our grand kid's lifetime. American greed and entitlement will continue to drag this country and its working class down into the bottomless pit we have been sucked into until we are at eachothers throat for a loaf of bread. corporations are not the problem, the people as a whole are.

Bring it home to the USA again. Blaming Obama for the last thirty five years of this nightmare is total BS..

none are blaming him (Nobama) for the past 30 yrs.... just the last 5 yrs.... remember, Nobama the clown on his 3rd month in office stated, "the blame from this point on lies squarely on my shoulders", yet we have head nothing of the sort, just finger pointing at every one, and every thing BUT himself...

like a lot of people today, they refuse to see how they can possibly be held accountable for any type of action, large or small of what they do, or fail to do.... until this, and other characteristic changes are made, and accountability comes about, expect the same blame game, and lack of work form the clown you call a president....

Naughty,

Over 65% of what is consumed in this country is produced in this country which means we are the largest manufactures by a wide margin as our economy is 3 times the size of China.

Many foreign cars are also not foreign but made here, such as Toyota, Honda, and BMW. I would also add that BMW is exporting cars made here to Germany.

AHH! the last time Obummer has met with congress was 2011 to discuss budget matters? Well that didn't work out so well since the debt continues to increase. We as a nation are now borrowing $0.46 of every dollar the government spends.

I have said this before, If we as a country keep allowing government to continually increase our taxes. When will enough be enough? 28%, 30%, 35%, 50%, or more? When will these ding-dongs realize the people pulling the cart will not continue to do so forever. Pretty soon those riding in the cart are going to be forced to get out and pull their own weight.

Spending is out of control PERIOD No matter how you want to spin it, spending is out of control. Not that any one party is any better than the other, but we cannot afford to put any more burden on our economy. ACA will not help at all. Reports are already out stating the CBO estimates are far too low. Originally estimated at 785 billion over ten years now revised up to a little over 2 trillion. Thats 900 billion we have to borrow to implement ACA. is it worth it to sacrifice our future for poor health care at best?

Truth Conveyer

Obama won on social issues.

Truth Conveyer,

Obama won on economic, political and social issues:

- His economic platform has created jobs and caused a decrease in our unemployment rate.

- Through court challenges, Democrats legally and successfully stopped the GOP's voter disenfranchisement political machine.

- Americans are happy with socially responsible The Affordable Care Act.

The people voted and Obama won.

Globally, millions of people were pleased that Obama won.

If it was all about the economy Obama would have lost 50 states to zero.

You must be psychic. Do you really think that New York, Massachusetts, Maine, California, and Washington State would have voted for Mitt?

The guy has absolutely no clue

The facts state otherwise. Job and economic growth has increased and unemployment has dropped to 7.7%

how to get this economy moving again

To continue economic progress for America, Obama will have to find some way to circumvent the greedy GOP

stop screwing the middle class.

Under Republican administrations, mistreatment of our middle class occurs.

Thankfully America also had the wisdom to keep the House in Repub hands

Is Fox the only channel that you watch? Only through gerrymandering, the GOP remained seated in the House.

How delusional are liberals like American Girl? All spending was Bush's fault when he was president, including the two biggest budgets he signed delivered to his desk by a Democrat controlled House and Senate. Yet American Girl credits Clinton for a balanced budget that was delivered to his desk by a Republican controlled House and Senate. Since no Democrat controlled Congress has even proposed a balanced budget for over 40 years, it is impossible for anyone but liberals like American Girl to consider them the party of fiscal responsibility. There is more then enough blame to go around Washington for the dire condition of the country, but no liberal will ever hold their own party accountable. Liberals constantly bashed Bush for spending, but now give Obama a pass. Democrats are the party of hypocrites. Blame, excuses, and gross exaggerations are the engine that drives the Democrat party.

You can't continually try to balance the budget on the backs of the poorest, the elderly, and the youngest in this country! Not only is it immoral, it is not fiscally sound! If you want to cut something, cut the corporate welfare first! Cut oil subsidies. Cut farm subsidies for corporate farms. Cut road to nowhere programs. Cut from the top first. Close the tax loopholes first! The President has already given cuts of 1.2 TRILLION DOLLARS away in cuts with only a 600 Billion tax increase! Where is the balance in that? We need to cut the greed, not the food stamps or school lunches! We need to invest in this country, who's roads are falling apart along with the bridges! Anyone who believes austerity works is a fool. Plain and simple. Ryan is a jack ass, Ayn Rand follower, who wouldn't know compassion or a true sense of honor if it bit him in his p90 ass! John Boehner is a moron who has lost control of his own party and will go down as the worst speaker in the history of this country! I can't wait until the mid terms to vote as many of them out as possible! Although, with gerrymandering and a rigged vote, that won't be easy. Since they have no message, they have to cheat. What a bunch of losers.

Many foreign cars are also not foreign but made here, such as Toyota, Honda, and BMW. I would also add that BMW is exporting cars made here to Germany.

correction... they are assembled, not made here, lol. other countries most of the parts, we just put them together. if not mistaken, every 4 cyl motor is made in asia or assembled in mexico, (take a look under the hood, and read mgf tag). we do some manufacturing, but not even close to a complete car. body parts, some casting and welding. the big and bulky to save on shipping, and to keep the sheeple baaaa'ing is about it. BMW is also a subsidiary of Chrysler... so yes some parts MAY be made here, and assembly done here, but it is wrong to call any of these American made, when they all are American partially made. the only motor company still in 100% American made is Harley Davidson company, (minus a bit of electrical so still even then), and if you remember correctly, that company gave the employees an option. cut some of the labor, and farm to other companies in the area to cut some of the costs, or cut all the labor, and they move down south. they took the 1st option. this was done because union wages, mandatory wage increase, and pensions were breaking the back of the company its self, just like it has with every other. Harley also stated, it would be a cold day in hell before they shipped work to mexico. the bikes were not selling, because people no longer could afford them costing more than their value.

proof is in the puddin', not the koolaid buddy.... try the puddin'... I have close to 30 yrs in the mfg field and know why places go belly up, have seen them go with my own 2 eyes. it isn't because of greedy ceo's, or GOP, or dems... but if your going to call a boot a baloney sandwich, it might be time to rethink what you've been taught by the sheep herder....

reported elsewhere but not seen here (as far as i know) is the fact that healthcare for pets will be increased by obamacare. the medical device tax that the republicans wanted to remove applies to all devices which may be used on humans and as a resilt, some of those devices, like a scalpel will not cost the vet more and as a result more costs to pet owners.

aca is being subsidized by our pets -- another unintended consequence or cleverly planned?

yes in a way you are right but go to a bank and ask for a loan when your income has went down, your debt to income ratio is way off the scale, not enough income to pay debt. and see how much they will give you. Then explain to that banker he needs to pay for your health insurance to help with your debt ratio. He will smile and say there is nothing he can do!!

Truth

You wouldn't know truth if it bit you in the ass.

Odumba is the biggest divider this country has ever seen.

Yes he united the middle class, but what he did was unite them against the rest of the country. He demonized the 2%, the ones who provide jobs, the ones who take the risks, the ones who have the ideas, the ones who provide capital for others to start businesses, in other words he demonizes the people who keep this country on it's feet. With out the 2% the quality of life for the 98% would be sh!t.

He divided the lower class from the middle class, as the hard workers in the middle class don't like seeing all those people getting stuff for free when they work hard and don't always end up with much more.

He divides race.

He divides sexes.

He divides everything, he divides every one who agrees with him from every one who doesn't, and that always leaves him with some one to blame when his ideas fail. It's always someones else fault when something goes wrong except the individual who who needs to take personal responsibility.

He couldn't unite two pieces of tape.

FDR and the New Deal were the best thing that ever happened to U.S. society. It created the large prosperous middle class we used to be famous for.

Obama and the Republicans are both trying to finish off what's left of it, but have to go through these maneuvers in order not to get blamed for cutting or destroying popular programs like Social Security, Medicare etc. which keep millions of americans out of poverty.

The Sequestration Tango: Obama and GOP Dance Through the Graveyard of the New Deal

Wed, 03/06/2013 - 00:35 — Glen Ford

The Obama regime has been remarkably successful – in pushing forward a Republican agenda. Obama, especially, has “moved with such elegance and poise, his fans forgot that he was dancing with a partner: the GOP.” Together, they have starved the federal beast and forged a consensus on the inevitability of austerity. Let the gruesome-twosome take a bow.

Barack Obama’s mission has always been to destroy the left wing of the Democrats in order to consummate a grand bargain – a melding – of the corporatists in both major parties. He entered national politics as a newly-minted member of the Democratic Leadership Council, which dispensed corporate campaign money to business-friendly candidates and incumbents. Ten years later, President Obama has succeeded beyond our worst fears. Black politics is in utter ruin, and the collapse of the Democratic Party’s left wing is all but complete. Austerity is the order of the day, and no one is more responsible for that catastrophe than Obama, who has waged war on so-called entitlement programs since the polls closed in 2008.

He packed his presidential team with the same gang of finance capitalists that Bill Clinton had allied with to consummate his Grand Bargain of 1999: the deregulation of the banks. Obama assumed the presidency with the economy in ashes as a result of what Clinton had wrought a decade before. Immediately, Obama turned the music back up, and the Corporate Tango began anew, full of choreographed emotion, stage-managed drama and canned passion. But the dancers – Obama and the Republicans – were all going in the same, preprogrammed direction: a backwards, counter-clockwise promenade to the Right, a dance through the cemetery of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal.

Obama was playing the old Republican game of ‘starve the beast.’”

Obama moved with such elegance and poise, his fans forgot that he was dancing with a partner: the GOP. In 2011, following Obama’s lead, the loving couple initiated their sequestration, a timed sequence of moves that would ultimately force the gutting of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, along with a whole host of discretionary social programs.

As is required when doing the Corporate Tango, Obama lied through his teeth, swearing during his third presidential debate that he never proposed sequestration. But Gene Sperling, the White House National Economic Council director, was so proud of the sequestration gambit, he confessed that it was all part of the grand plan to put entitlements on the block. Obama claimed he’d been looking out for the government’s tax revenues. But the liberal economist Jeffrey Sachs put together a chart that showed Obama was playing the old Republican game of “starve the beast”; that he had undermined the government’s ability to pay for itself by supporting the vast bulk of President Bush’s tax cuts; and that the results matched Obama’s 2009 projections for government spending over the next four years, almost exactly. Obama’s train was running right on time.

Polls show that the Republicans are getting the blame for sequestration, but the stock market is hitting new heights now that austerity has triumphed, and that’s all that really matters to the moneyed classes, whether they are wearing Republican red or Democratic blue. They have won – at least until the next economic collapse, or until a new opposition to the rule of capital can be constructed. That will not happen anywhere near the event horizon of the Democratic Party, which has followed Barack Obama into the black hole of Wall Street. Once you go Goldman Sachs, you never go back.

American Girl-724855The budget was able to be balanced during the Clinton years because of one thing. The Tech boom. Revenues came in faster than he could find a way to earmark it for entitlements. If you recall Clinton also signed trade laws. (NAFTA ,GAFT and others) that took the very jobs that made him appear to be a great budgeter away. If you look back you will see the economy beginning to faulter in the last 18 month of his second term so he escaped the bubble bursting and it has been blamed on Bush. It is so easy for Clinton and the Democrats to take credit for surpluses caused by the sudden upstart of those tech jobs but you all are surley slow to admit you also caused the outsourcing of those very jobs.

When Obam decides to finally take "WITH" the GOP and not "AT" the GOP perhaps we will see some movement. As long as he continues to tell them what they must do there is no way for compromise and nothing will change.

Does anyone really think that Obama has read the 2,800 page ACA or even looked at the 13,000 pages of regulations. Those who will be affected by them have read, or are slowing getting through them, and unanimously agree that Obamacare is out of control spending that cannot be afforded by this Nation or its citizens. I believe Obama should read the ACA before he spouts off about it. Note that since the facts are coming out and true costs are becoming more apparent, Obama has stopped his rhetoric as to what a great cost saving measure it is. It is irrelevant whether his prior rhetoric consisted of deliberate lies (which I doubt) or pure ignorance of its affects but, it was nonetheless ill conceived and will inevitably face massive amendments or repeal but not until it has done substantial, and possibly irreversible, damage to the Nation. The problem is that Obama is too arrogant to admit that he made a mistake. What he should be doing is to stop threatening to veto a repeal of the ACA but instead look at the many valid criticisms that have come forward and start to constructively address them.

Obama says he will not balance the budget just for the sake of balancing the budget.

Democrats want to balance the budget as it makes sense in time.

Democrats want to balance the budget in a balanced way that doesn't further exacerbate the gap between the haves and the have-nots.

The Republicans (who gave us this debt) demand a balanced budget immediately... economy be damned and true debt reduction be damned.

The Republicans, in truth, couldn't care less about balancing anyone's budget.

The Republicans, in truth, are using the debt they created AN AN EXCUSE to enact their ugly policies based on the poor being leaches and the government being bloated and unneeded.

Provide a solution absent the Republican wish-list cuts and you'll find no Republican leadership support... so the only chance we have is to go around them. That is what Obama is doing.

I would expect a little patience from the media by reporting these meetings in the best light possible. But I guess I ask too much.

          #1.73 - Thu Mar 14, 2013 8:26 AM EDT

Yep, Mr. Obama's message to the GOP:

"I WON", "My Way or the Highway", and "if you don't agree with Peppermint Patty's Progressive Spending Budget....you will be blamed for taking us "over the cliff and through the Valley of Death"".

You'd have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to see what you posted as the real situation.

In budgetary matters, Obama has REPEATEDLY offered to cut spending and to cut entitlements (which is unpopular with the Democratic base, but it's what the GOP wants), but he also insists that some new revenue come along with that.

The GOP steadfastly refuses to raise ANY new revenue, and wants it all in spending cuts.

The bottomline is that while Obama and the Dems are offering to gore their sacred cows, the GOP refuses to do the same.

So what Obama is really saying (rather than your dumba$$ diatribe) is this:

"I won the Presidency, the Senate Dems won and picked up seats, the House Dems didn't win the House but they picked up seats and beat the GOP in terms of the popular vote (and only lost the seat total via gerrymandering). It's irrefutable that the American public supports the Democratic Party platform over the GOP one at this time in our history. This doesn't mean it's 'my way or the highway', but it DOES mean that you're going have to gore YOUR sacred cow a little bit too (that is, raise new tax revenue) when I offer to gore mine if a deal is to be reached. I'll compromise away SOME of my position to the dismay of my base, but I won't give away the store (any longer, cause I have done so in the past)."

Seriously, to pretend like Obama is playing "my way or the highway" with just about any issue of the day shows you are not paying attention, don't listen, lack understanding, and are completely incapable of critical thought. Period.

With out the 2% the quality of life for the 98% would be sh!t.

this is absolute bull@!$%#, for several reasons.

First, the "rich" and the top 2% have not particularly been demonized other than suggesting that perhaps they pay the same tax rate they did back during the 1990's (when the economy hummed along and the upper class made millions of $$'s). Hardly demonization.

Second, you incorrectly assume that only the top 2% work hard, have ideas, take risks, or even invest capital into business ventures (it's a fact that most small businesses are NOT part of the top 2%).

Lastly, the part I bolded is pure, unadulterated BS. If the top 2% were suddenly stricken from the earth, a NEW top 2% would rise up in their place. There is no absence of dreams, or goals, or ideals, or work ethic from the bottom 98%. New folks would simply take their place as the captains of industry, the CEO's of banks and Wall St. firms, and the new technology innovators of their day.

The bottom 98% are not non-millionaires because they lack ANY of the qualities of the current top 2% millionaires. There is a finite amount of money supply to go around (that's an economic fact) and it only grows at a finite rate (this is called inflation). It is MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for everyone to be rich, it will NEVER happen. So in light of this undeniably true fact, please stop pretending like the top 2% (or even the top 0.1%) are some special breed of human that is smarter, stronger, faster, and more deserving than the rest. It's asinine, immature, and flat out wrong.

Why these Republicans leaders haven't learned anything from their defeat in November 2012 when they lost the White House and seats in the House and the senate.

Maybe these GOP leaders are merely reflecting the dumbness of their rich donors? So these GOP leaders are not really leaders, but sycophants of their rich but dumb donors.

Democrats in general are economic pigs. If it wasn't for the Democrats there would not be so many unnecessary government departments, rules, regulations, wasteful spending, and their intolerance so repressing on society. For most Americans all we want is for government to quit interfering in our lives and to support and uphold the Constitution. The face of the pig to me is those violent, crude, irrational, drug afflicted Occupy demonstrators. Pigotry and offensive Red Head are truly the heart of the new socialist Democrat Party.

By the way AG the ones that threaten our S.S. are the dems, while the repubs want to make sure its still there when you retire. Being 40 myself, im looking at why what I put in may not be there when I retire, and what I see is dems putting their hands where it doesn't belong. why not privatize it? put it into a secure ira or something that the government cannot take out of, or to give to others. look up Ponzi scheme, its pretty much what the S.S. set up is right now, paying into and your returns are payed by the others paying into it.

Seems to me the last administration was the Obama administration (he's starting his second term). And typically, there are Recessions after a two term President winds down his tenure in office. There was an economic down turn at the end of the Clinton years, yet it didn't last as long as this one has. I know my earning power continued to climb until 2009. Since then, it has dropped. My equity in my house has dropped. My take home pay has dropped. Local taxes have gone up. Gas has gone up. Yep. It's President Bush's fault. *eyeroll*

The only hope we have is that when our current President's tenure is up, the economy can't get much worse.

enacted August 2, 2011) is a federal statute in the United States that was signed into law by

President Barack Obama on August 2, 2011.

The Act brought conclusion to the 2011 United States debt-ceiling crisis,
which had threatened to lead the United States into sovereign default on or about August 3, 2011

The federal government’s outlays this fiscal year will total $3.55 trillion,
according to the CBO’s latest estimate.
Do the arithmetic and you’ll see that $42 billion is 1.16 percent of what the federal government
would have spent this year if there had there been no sequester.

                      amer. girl, #3.7,

                      You said:

I can tell you exactly what George "Curveball" Bush lied about: WMDs of which there never were any.

EDUCATION: Three types of WMD...NBC: Nukes; Bios; Chemical.

Do you remember the Kurds, an ethnic minority in northern Iraq. They were gassed, NERVE gas.

A WMD, (C) as in Chemical. Big protests and outrage in the UN about using said WMD-C on CIVILIANS.

Because Iraq not only had them, Iraq USED them. But while Saddam was a nasty guy.

The real question is where did those Nerve gas weapons go?

                      ..

OOPS, that means you were wrong, or lied. Or are you one of those Kurd massacre deniers.

Paul Ryan's Plan to Destroy Medicare | The Nation

I know that many of you republicans and conservatives(not all) are masters at ignoring reality, so i posted this link as proof of how ryan, most republicans and conservatives desire to balance the budget. Just concerning medicare alone, if ryan gets his way with undoing that one program, that will jack up taxes to an unfathomable level. First, if the claim is true, it will cost trillions to change it to a privatized system. Second it would force millions more americans to turn to emergency care where they would get slammed with huge absurd bills they cannot pay, thus forcing taxpayers to cover those costs.

That article that you refer to doesn't mention that without some kind of change to Medicare it will be broke by 2023 or sooner. What is the Democrats plan to save Medicare without cutting benefits for people under 55? What is better smaller benefits or no benefits?

Quite the convoluted argument found in the article. I will boil down the idiot author's assertion so that you don't actually have to go read the diatribe. Obamacare is great, Medicare is also great in its current form, but making either one of them even slightly resemble the other program in any way, shape, or form is very, very bad.

Wow, Morlack, you post an editorial opinion as fact. The article has not relevant facts supporting the assertions made by the author. It is only the author's opinion from 2011. And, as already stated above, makes no reference to the pending insolvency of Medicare within 10 years as currently structured, nor does it present any alternative plan to Ryan's. Rather, it is a one sided editorial with no references that can be used to verify the author's opinion.

Raise the cost of insurance for everyone except those whom can afford their own, and those in the government. Just remember when you are pointing that fingure there are three more pointing back at you.

Uh, the Senate budget doesn't balance like the House Budget. You many like the Ryan plan but you can't deny it will balance if it works out like it's suppose to. I know, these things never work out, BUT, at least it's a start. Show me the President's budget or the Senate's budget that balances and then it will be a starting point.

Only in Washington could so many people work so hard to get nothing done. The congress hasn't gotten anything done in so long that they've probably forgotten how to work and what sucess feels like. They're so busy slinging @!$%# at each other that that's all they know how to do. They should take away salary and benefits until they reach a deal. What a bunch of slackers! I don't see anything coming together anytime soon.

I'm not a big fan of any party or anybody these days. But the language that Boehner uses is simply horrible. It's antagonistic to say the least. I want some kind of deal to come around but when you say "Republicans want to balance the budget but the president doesn't" where does that get you? It's basically saying that you don't want to work with anyone. But at least it panders to the base and fuels the hatred that this party uses for their reelection campaigns. It's disgusting.

And I'm a registered Republican!!! I'm ashamed of how they do things these days. Ryan's budget asks Obama to destroy the main thing he's done in Obamacare?!?! That's simply grandstanding. Of course it's not going to happen.

Whether I believe in the things that this administration is trying to do or not...I truly don't believe in the tactics that my party is using these days.

It is a very bad plan that will hit the upper tier of middle class Americans very hard in the pocket book as well as cost jobs.

As far as comparing Obama's character with Romney's, why don't you read Obama's books and see what kind of character he exhibited compared to what Romney did as a youth. You are just using the mean distorted Democrat talking points designed to denigrate him for politics. Obama should have been in jail for using and selling pot and cocaine. Read about what Obama did just to get elected his first time and what he did shady deals with contributors in real estate deals for state projects for the poor. Obama has always been and still is a shady con man.

The man of action is here for us.

And nearly 130 times, he couldn't make a decision. He couldn't figure out whether to vote "yes" or "no." It was too tough. . You don't get "present." It doesn't work in an executive job. For president of the United States, it's not good enough to be present.

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure.
It is a sign that the U.S. government can’t pay its own bills. ...
I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.”

                                  — Then-Sen. Barack Obama, floor speech in the Senate, March 16, 2006

                                  The Budget Control Act of 2011 (Pub.L. 112–25, S. 365, 125 Stat. 240,
enacted August 2, 2011) is a federal statute in the United States that was signed into law by

President Barack Obama on August 2, 2011.

The Act brought conclusion to the 2011 United States debt-ceiling crisis,
which had threatened to lead the United States into sovereign default on or about August 3, 2011

When the President warns everyone that if he doesn't get what he wants he will veto any bill that comes before him, it sucks all the air out of any potential compromise. Obama holds the veto ax over any sensible legislation, so to blame the House is ridiculous. To spare Obama having to exercise his veto, his henchman, Harry the Hack, just doesn't bring house bills to a vote in the Senate.

RECOGNIZING THIS, OUR WORTHLESS LIBERAL PRESS SAYS NOTHING.

The GOP is now worried about debt? FIRST OFF, they ran the debt up, and even their snarky VP Cheney said "deficits don't matter." So why are they worried about it now? Simple, every since social security came into being, the GOP has tried to destroy it.

And the lap dogs of the low informed base think that's OK. How many of their parents, grandparents, other relatives are drawing SS? But they will crap on their own family to get rid of SS. THAT IS THEIR MENTALITY.

If they are serious about balancing the budget, lay it out to the public, item by item, how much is getting cut, why that program, and how much new revenue does the budget going to generate? Until then, they are LYING SOB'S. We don't need another lying Ryan budget with zero dollar amounts in it.

Sally, Where is Obozos plan. He has never had a budget. If you can read, Ryans budget is laid out. Also, Obozo has ran up the debt in the last 5 years by how much?? Look it up. Also look up how fast he did it vs any other president/presisents. Get your facts straight before you spout your mouth.

Sally, 2006 Demo's control Congress did the same thing to Bush (and some other times in History) Also handing out free stuff to lazy ass people who want free hand out's so they don't have to work doesn't add to the Debt? I guess you love you're boy BHO.

Sally, apparently you are a proud product of our public "education" system: YOU CAN'T READ! Ryan's remake of Social Security has NEVER suggested that we take any benefits away from current recipients. His goal is to change the system so it will be available to those who are ready for retirement in 50+ years.

guess what, the repubs were wrong for cutting revenue because of annual surpluses. I don't know, but highly doubt that the cuts alone led to retoring the annual deficit. Had we not gone to war then maybe it would be a different story. Today, the pres is wrong for not cutting spending. Raise revenue, but don't say your gonna rifle off a whole new round of spending with that new money.

The truth is what matters and any rationalizing of emotional preferences, biased loyalties and/or prejudices while ignoring/denying the truth, is literally part of the problem, not only allowing the deception but in actually encouraging it. It may not be easy to go against emotions, loyalties or prejudices, which is what the deceivers count on, but without doing it the only thing anyone can expect is “more of the same” actions with “more of the same” results. To stimulate better results, to get politicians to actually turn their act around and to become accountable to the people, to have them demonstrate other than their self-serving concentration, their constant deceptive propaganda has to be literally seen through and rejected and they themselves have to be firmly and completely rejected - it is the only way they will get the message.

The trouble is that everyone rationalizes that the other side is lying, with the reality being that all politicians exaggerate, embellish and “puff their wares”. Today there are some however, with the power, influence and mega-bucks of “the money”, their strong supporters and masters, who have taken it to the extreme and who consider the voters just “pawns” to be conned, manipulated, used and abused. There is a drastic difference, one that results in significant costs to the majority, and the people really have to be rational and objective to figure it out, otherwise “more of the same” is very apt to be the rule. The “Red Flags” are clear, as seen in the few who always benefit from their positions, in their total focus on their own political ambitions at any cost to the people, in their always stubbornly blocking and arrogant faulting all efforts, in their belligerent and consistent refusal to compromise or cooperate in any way and in their always pushing hype over issues that cloud over their efforts to return to “more of the same” - but the people have to be willing to see the reality.

Nancy Pelosi, Obama and other Democrats are faulted and they no doubt do leave ample room for improvement, as it seems all politicians do, but currently the Republicans present the worse case scenario. The Republicans have literally become owned and controlled by “the money” and as such, are totally focused on serving only “the money” and just offering the majority the abundant propaganda. It all can be argued back and forth without end and when without being rational and objective, without emotions, biases, loyalties and prejudices set aside, the argument will be unending. People will just have to figure it out for themselves. Personally, when I see Boehner, Ryan, Cantor, Bachmann, McConnell and so many others, their cocky attitude and belligerent demeanor leaves no doubt for me but that is really after being conditioned by observing the “Red Flags”.

There is no point in the two sides meeting. Everyone knows the republican position, right or wrong and I'm sure everyone knows they are not going to give on anything. They are afraid of their own constituency and they hate democrats anyway. They don't think of them as citizens they disagree with but some lesser life form. Obama has no reason to give. The majority of the country is with him and he is going to be president this term no matter what. He can afford to sit back and let republicans shut down government, refuse to raise the debt ceiling, cut medicare and social security and see how the public reacts to it. It is a win win for him and a loose loose for them. The only reason republicans deserve any of this is because they want credit for reducing spending and no blame for the pain it causes. No one gets it both way.

If that were true, everyone should be in a state of panic because then we would truly be losing our country to the radiacal socialists!! Incidentally, winning and election by 1% does not a mandate make

We could go through your post and exchange every "republican" with "democrat" and it would read exactly the same.

The fundimental weakness in leftist philosophy is that it requires the coercion of other people to work, usually in the form of taking their money or their property.

In the case of Obamacare it forces people to participate in a government driven medical plan whose stated goal is not to give reasonable value of services but to have some participants subsidize others.

In the case of "economic stimulus" it means taking money from successful businesses and individuals and transferring it to non-productive ones.

Here's the test: if it's a good idea - you won't have to force people to participate.

Salsa: I think you logic is flawed- slaves had to be forced into being slaves. None of them volunteered. When blacks and whites marry it's because they want to. Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that certain state governments wouldn't allow it?

Salsa - do you find it helpful to blame "white people" for things that happened in the past? I doubt if any of us in this discussion were responsible for slavery, segregation or "racial purity" laws.

Thomas you are preaching to the choir in salsa, you gotta know salsa in excess makes you loony.

Whites now days especially over 65 are in a minority but we still get blamed for the past no matter what our background is...an excuse is all it is and it is sure getting old.

Didn't you learn in public school that whites oppress minorities and that the only thing wrong with this planet is the evil Anglo Euro culture of this failed culture. We must embrace our greater selves in Maoist and Stalinism like the regressives in the Whitehouse.

That can't be! He is as dishonest as the day is long and has demonstrated it for over 4 years. He is not willing or capable of working with anyone nor has he ever been!

I guess you believed the bush and cheney (the DICK) lies about WMD's (have we found them yet?...don't think so!!! How many folks have died because of this BS -- you know what the numbers are.
Why don't you just STFU and crawl back into the hole you came out of. Your opinion isn't worth SH!T. Your party not only LOST, but you all just can't get over it. The majority (don't care how you count it), but the majority of the American people backed Mr. Obama and he WON. Now why would people vote for him if he's all that you and the rest of your white trash racist say he is. Apparently THE MAJORITY don't like your attitude or your worthless opinions, which by the way, you can't back up with any fact.

You should check the numbers. You'd be amazed to see the GW bush took more vacation than any other president in history. Spending about 3 years on holiday of his 8. Reagan was not far behind. You can collect the last 10 democrats and add their vacation time up and still does not exceed reagan and bush's....Least Vacation ever taken by a pres. Bill clinton.

Right wingers think Texas is a state and Hawaii isn't. Bush received a lot of complaints about so many vacations so he started holding, "working vacations". Meaning when at his ranch for a week he'd call someone.

Bush spent 1,020 days of his presidency on vacation. To put this into context, John F. Kennedy spent fewer days in office, 1000, than George W. Bush spent on vacation. Bush spent 487 days at Camp David, 490 days at his Crawford ranch, and 43 days in Kennebunkport. George W. Bush spent 69 days in Crawford during his first year in office. In contrast, according to FactCheck.org, Obama spent all, or part of, 26 days of his first year in office on vacation. This was less than all three previous Republican presidents, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush, but more than the two previous Democratic presidents, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.

In Fox News revisionist GOP history, George W. Bush was a hard worker who was always at his desk doing the work of the American people, while Obama is just another party animal Democrat, who doesn’t take his job seriously. Crowley’s applied a strange definition of vacation to Obama. Since when is shooting hoops, playing golf, or even having a smoke, a vacation? I do believe that Lopez and McCartney came to the White House. Obama did not go see them. No president has ever been as lazy as the man who spent 1/3 of his time in the White House on vacation, George W. Bush, and it is laughable that Crowley would even try to float such a ridiculous lie.
