Subscribe to RSSHomeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Tuesday that the budget cuts resulting from sequestration will mean long security lines at the nation’s main points of entry.
“We will do everything we can do to mitigate those effects,” she told city officials gathered at the National League of Cities Conference in Washington. “But, as mayors you can appreciate there's only so much blood you can squeeze out of a turnip. And our turnip is pretty dry”
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano outlines the progress being made on securing the U.S.-Mexico border and where lawmakers stand on a comprehensive immigration bill.
Napolitano said that the budget-related delays are not necessarily evident now because of the gradual implementation of the cuts and because it is “one of the lighter travel periods of the year.”
But she cautioned that the furloughing of security employees will eventually mean “significantly longer lines” for travelers as the busier spring and summer season gets underway.
“Threats from terrorism and other threats that we face at our borders don't go away just because we have a budget crisis,” she said.
Napolitano said yesterday at an address to the Jewish Council for Public Affairs that travelers later this year should budget extra time at security checkpoints due to the sequester.
"I just tell my friends to just plan on spending some time, and make sure you’ve got lots of things to entertain the kids with," she said. "The lines will be very, very long.”

There is only ONE way to stop the insanity and that is to severely limit government like the Constitution originally did. The Constitution can fit on 19 very small pages in a Pocket Constitution but yet we just passed an ObamaCare law that was 2700 pages. It is now over 15,000 pages with all the new regulations. Our tax code is now over 70,000 pages. 70,000 PAGES!!
How is that possible? How did we as a country ALLOW this nonsense? When the Constitution can fit on 19 small pages but our tax code and ObamaCare combined are over 100,000 PAGES?!?!?
Add to that almost 500 MAJOR Federal departments. HOW?!?! WHY?!?!?
No, you will not get support from me for departments Bush added and you will not get support from me for departments Obama added. Or Clinton. Or Bush Sr. Or Reagan. Or Carter. Or Lyndon Johnson and that is true for every president before that.
We have lost control of this country and I really don't know if we can save it now. But it CAN'T be saved unless everybody is willing to say "enough is enough".
Get rid of the Department of Education. That should be a state issue.
Get rid of the EPA.
Get rid of the Department of Energy.
Get rid of Homeland Security.
Get rid of the Department of Commerce.
And the list goes on. These are STATE issues and not the responsibility of the Federal Government. It even states in the Constitution. The federal government has very defined responsibilities and the balance goes to the states or the people. But most people just don't care - and that will be the death of the United States of America.

So if we get rid of the Education Department someone from, lets say Alabama where there is less money or interest in high levels of education would have schools producing far less educated people than someone from Massachusetts where they have more money and more need for a better education. That attitude was fine when Southern states were primarily agricultural, rural and people didn't travel more than 25 or so miles from home. That is not the case today, of course.
So you would rather drink polluted water and breathe in filthy air than to fund the EPA. Go live in China, you'd love it there.
The Department of Energy regulates nuclear power plants. Suppose someone gets sloppy and the plant is located in a small community near a big metro area. Three Mile Island should have been a lesson. Also who is to say that weapons grade uranium might get in the wrong hands, and although headed for a power plant, goes to some terrorist instead. No federal regulating agency people are free to run amok.
Homeland Security is the biggest agency of the government created by the Bush Administration in an effort to get CIA, FBI and military services all talking to each other and to reduce redundancy in duties and in information gathering etc. If there is a way to ensure they will talk to one another and cooperate than maybe we don't need that cabinet post but I doubt, with things as they seem to be in Washington generally, we should keep DHS for now.
Sure, get rid of the Department of Commerce and let the chaos begin. No set prices for anything, people able to sell snake oil unregulated. Yep, that'l do the trick.
Those cabinet posts exist for a reason. Probably because the need became too great to be handled any other way and because some folks became greedy or abused something or someone and needed to be controled before the entire country suffered irreparably.

First, the BIGGEST reason for the federal government to not control these agencies is the Constitution doesn't give them the authority. That should be enough.
Second, these are state issues. You need to understand the reason the Constitution was set up that way. Initially the founding fathers looked at each state kind of like their own "country". That is why it is called the United States of America. Because each "state" was its own entity. So why the federal government? Primarily to protect the states.
But why was each "state" given so much power? Because "the people" own the states. If a state didn't treat the people right they would leave and go to a state that better represented them. This is where we have lost the basis of this country. Because I can't move from, say, Colorado to, say, Alabama and expect anything different. Federal government STILL controls the schools, STILL control the businesses, STILL mandate EPA and ADA regulations, etc.
That was NOT how it was set up. If a state forces a parent to go to a school they don't want their kids to go to they could move to a state that DOES allow that. But that is not what we have.
So to answer your question: No, all agencies should be eliminated and the responsibilities go to the state. The STATE controls nuclear power. The STATE controls environmental issues. The STATE controls the educational system. Then the PEOPLE decide where they want to live based on if the STATE follows the desires of the people.
The federal government takes the people completely out of the equation and restricts the states and THAT goes totally against the Constitution.

The DOE has ruined education in this country, and if you can't see that, then you're blind. Between them and the teachers union, our children don't stand a chance. The federal government needs to get out of education, and give it back to the states. If parents don't like the education in their state, then they can move to another. Patrick - many of the people getting assistance were hit hard by this recession. Jobs were lost and many families have parents working two jobs just to keep a roof over their head. Luckily I've never been faced witht that but I don't begrude assistance to people who have been. Had Bush not squandered our country's good economy in his zeal to go after Saddam Hussein, many people would not be needing assistance.

Several states now only have one clinic per state, then with all the vaginal probe laws and waiting periods you could end up have to travel easily a 1000 miles and lose a weeks worth of work and then to top it off the state makes you pay for the medically unnecessary procedure. And some states now want to make women pay for and do the vaginal probe twice.
Republicans aren't suppose to care about how many children you have while voting on unconstitutional laws in states around our country to force every pregnancy to end in a child.
Do you think after the state forces you to have a child, should they then be able to stand and watch that child starve to death or do they have a responsibility to take care of that which they are forcing on poor women?

The conclusion that the 2,717 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles are for the Department of Homeland Security is false. Instead, they are part of a contract award to the US Navy and will be subsequently used by the United States Marine Corps.

Federal solicitations to buy the bullets are known as "strategic sourcing contracts," which help the government get a low price for a big purchase, says Peggy Dixon, spokeswoman for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga . The training center and others like it run by the Homeland Security Department use as many as 15 million rounds every year, mostly on shooting ranges and in training exercises.
Dixon said one of the contracts would allow Homeland Security to buy up to 750 million rounds of ammunition over the next five years for its training facilities. The rounds are used for basic and advanced law enforcement training for federal law enforcement agencies under the department's umbrella. The facilities also offer firearms training to tens of thousands of federal law enforcement officers. More than 90 federal agencies and 70,000 agents and officers used the department's training center last year.
The rest of the 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition would be purchased by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal government's second largest criminal investigative agency.
ICE's ammunition requests in the last year included:
_450 million rounds of .40-caliber duty ammunition
_40 million rounds of rifle ammunition a year for as many as five years, for a total bullet-buy of 200 million rounds
_176,000 rifle rounds on a separate contract
_25,000 blank rounds
The Homeland Security ammo buy is not the first time the government's bullets purchases have sparked concerns on the Internet. The same thing happened last year when the Social Security Administration posted a notice that it was buying 174,000 hollow point bullets.
Jonathan L. Lasher, the agency's assistant inspector general for external relations, said those bullets were for the Social Security inspector general's office, which has about 295 agents who investigate Social Security fraud and other crimes.

As for the Africa trip, just like we did for the Bush girls, we only paid for their security. The planes were going to take the First Lady - as they took Laura Bush and the girls when they went to Europe on a number of occasions.

I work for a small business owner. Last year my hours were cut back, this year my taxes went up and my commissions were cut. But guess what? I'm not whining and crying about it. I'm figuring it out and redoing my budget. And you know what, I'll probably have more money when it all shakes out, because I'm trying new ideas and making better spending choices.
