Subscribe to RSSWASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama had a ready excuse for anyone who didn't think he was funny enough at Saturday night's Gridiron dinner: "My joke writers have been placed on furlough."
Always a target for humorous barbs, the president tossed out a few of his own during the Gridiron Club and Foundation dinner, an annual event that features political leaders, journalists and media executives poking fun at each other.
The cuts that struck the federal budget this month drew another observation from Obama: "Of course, there's one thing in Washington that didn't get cut — the length of this dinner. Yet more proof that the sequester makes no sense."
The ambitions of 70-year-old Vice President Joe Biden? "Just the other day, I had to take Joe aside and say, 'Joe, you are way too young to be the pope. You can't do it. You got to mature a little bit.'"
During a pause in his remarks, Obama took a long, slow sip of water and then said, "That, Marco Rubio, is how you take a sip of water."
Obama also mocked criticism from some quarters that he takes time off from his job. "We face major challenges. March in particular is going to be full of tough decisions. But I want to assure you, I have my top advisers working around the clock. After all, my March Madness bracket isn't going to fill itself out. And don't worry — there is an entire team in the Situation Room as we speak, planning my next golf outing, right now at this moment."
The dinner was the organization's 128th since its founding in 1885. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar represented the Democrats while Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal cracked wise for the Republicans.
Klobuchar joked that Obama had aged in office. "His Secret Service name used to be 'Renegade,'" she said. "Now it's '50 Shades of Gray.'"
Jindal took a poke at Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, telling the audience that Romney had warned him that "47 percent of you can't take a joke." Referring to his own prospects for a presidential run, Jindal asked, "What chance does a skinny guy with a dark complexion have of being elected president?"
Political disputes and feuds between politicians and the news media provided plenty of fodder for jokes and Gridiron parodies. There was Obama's sometimes frosty relationship with the news media, the internal struggles roiling the Republican Party, and journalist Bob Woodward's dustup with White House economic adviser Gene Sperling. He advised Woodward in an email that the veteran Watergate reporter would regret his reporting about the forced spending cuts called a sequester.
In prepared remarks to welcome the 650 people attending the dinner, Gridiron President Charles J. Lewis of Hearst Newspapers noted that the organization had promised to keep the evening short, "especially because Gene Sperling said that a late night is something we'd all regret."
With a nod to print reporters' complaints about dealing with the Obama administration, Lewis said he thought he had overhead Obama remark on the way to the dinner: "So many newspaper reporters. So many interviews to turn down."
Musical skits are a tradition at the Gridiron dinner, and club officials released its musical program ahead of the event. Using the Beatles song "When I'm 64," one skit featured a look at Hillary Rodham Clinton's future with the lyrics:

Going home to vegetate in Chappaqua, I just want to be a grandma
It was more than a case of Benghazi flu, Still I'll be just fine.

The Gridiron Club and Foundation contributes to college scholarships and journalistic organizations. It limits its active members to 65 journalists based in Washington.
Except for Grover Cleveland, every president since the Gridiron was founded has addressed it. The club is the oldest and most exclusive for Washington journalists. Its motto is "singe but never burn."
No TV cameras were allowed.

Maybe it is time to cut the Executive budget. For example: $ 100,000/year "caretaker" for Bo, Wednesday get togethers (for friends, campaign contributors and special interest folks), and 15 Michelle assistants.
Those top 1 per-centers are pesky folks....just ask Mr. Kerry who parks his Yacht in another State to avoid taxes, or the 41 Obama White House staffers, and some of their aides, who have FAILED TO PAY THEIR BACK TAXES.

The Associated Press forgot to mention that the person or persons who launch those "humerous barbs" are IMMEDIATELY labeled a racist, and vilified in the media, regardless of the humerous barb topic. They forgot to mention that obama then targets those persons and punishes them with impunity. They forgot to mention that obama's skin is so thin it's practically translucent.

He had no magic wand, and his fix and the results have taken the entire first term to be felt.
And with his party in control 100%, how exactly did he handle things? Right, he went with social healthcare as the only thing to work on. How many things that he blames on congress now could have been taken care of with full control of the house and senate?

The only people hired were government workers so government again expands. Now I can easily see that the unemployment never came down like Obama said it would in fact 4 years later and we are just now getting to the level he said the stimulus would keep us from surpassing. With unemployment still above 8% you can say Obama and his policies are failures. I'm happy this jackass can joke about sequestration. The DoD civilian employees that are facing furloughs and a 20% reduction in the their paychecks don't find it funny at all. For those in non-GS or lower-tier GS positions, that's the difference between being able to pay their bills and keep their homes vs. not. Many of them will be working second and third jobs--if they can find them--or having to find another way to make a living altogether. I will take your bait. One of the MANY good things the Obama administration has brought US is the Affordable Care Act. I see the RN after your name, and think you might be able to relate to the health care crisis in our country. Millions are/were uninsured, and so many of us have been bankrupted by our medical bills. The insurance companies, and drug companies, make HUGE margins, while many of us are skipping doses and splitting pills. The ACA will make us healthier, and allow us to seek treatment much earlier, thus saving money and lives. Lots of pro-active stuff in the ACA too.
I can tell you that it has kept me somewhat solvent, as I'm finally not bleeding $11,000 a year in Rx expenses. The Medicare Coverage Gap (Part D Rx's) is closing, and this is a huge benefit to people like me. BTW, I worked for 35+ years before becoming disabled. (in the health care industry) I don't know anyone currently in the HC industry, that knows the FACTS, who is against Obamacare. Only those that have put their fingers in their ears and are unwilling to read/see the benefits.

2. The House is responsible for creating the budget according to the Constitution. It just can't get it through the Senate. Why? The Senate rightfully recognizes it as being ill-conceived.
Finally, anyone who references Agenda 21, or who confuses so many fictitious issues as "gates", and thus somehow equal to Watergate, has little to contribute of substance to this conversation.

Correct me if I'm wrong (or you just want to pretend I am) but when the Senate gets a budget no matter how "ill-conceived" it is they are supposed to make changes to it and send it back to the house. The house budget is Ryan's. You know, privatize Social Security, give a 2 billion to the Pentagon, cut welfare. That is the House budget. The Senate did in fact vote on a budget. Just that Boehner won't bring it up because it just revirses Ryan's budget. Remember Romney ran on the Ryan budget. Guess what, we voted for Obama (read reject Ryan's budget).

Senate subcommittees have already made changes, but Sen Reid (D-Nev) has not allowed debate on the Senate floor or a vote. The House only starts the process, but the Senate has an equal part in passing a budget.
