Subscribe to RSSThe Senate voted Thursday by a vote of 63 to 34 to confirm John Brennan, President Barack Obama’s nominee to head the Central Intelligence Agency after a filibuster sparked by the administration’s policy of targeted killings of terrorists.
On Wednesday, Sen. Rand Paul, R- Ky., staged a 12-hour filibuster to draw attention to his demand that Obama explicitly say whether he thinks he has the constitutional authority to order the killing of noncombatant American citizens on U.S. soil.

Sen. John McCain voices criticism toward fellow Republican Senator Rand Paul for indicating that it was possible for the government to attack an American cafe with a drone strike.
On Thursday Paul received a letter from Attorney General Eric Holder in which he said the president doesn’t have the authority "to use a weaponized drone to kill an American not engaged in combat on American soil."
Paul said on the Senate floor Thursday that he was “very pleased to have gotten this response back from the attorney general of the United States and I think Americans should see this battle we’ve had in the last 24 hours as something that’s good for the country.”
During his filibuster Paul mocked Brennan for saying at his confirmation hearing last month before the Senate Intelligence Committee, “What we need to do is optimize transparency on these (targeted killing) issues and at the same optimize secrecy and the protection of our national security.”
Brennan also said during his confirmation hearing that those who protest against the targeted killings “really have a misunderstanding of what we do as a government, and the care that we take, and the agony that we go through” to ensure that innocent bystanders aren’t hit in the drone strikes in Yemen and other countries. “The American people would be quite pleased to know that we’ve been very disciplined and very judicious,” he argued.
One Democrat who voted against confirming Brennan, Judiciary Committee chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont said he'd reluctantly opposed the nomination because "the administration has stonewalled me and the Judiciary Committee for too long on a reasonable request to review the legal justification for the use of drones in the targeted killing of American citizens."
The administration, Leahy said, "made the relevant OLC (Office of Legal Counsel) memorandum available to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence in order to advance this nomination. I expect the Judiciary Committee, which has oversight of the Office of Legal Counsel, to be afforded the same access."
Thirteen Republican senators voted for Brennan, while two Democrats and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who caucuses with the Democrats, voted against him.
In making the case for Brennan, Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D- Calif. said that his 25 years as a CIA analyst, head of counterterrorism efforts and White House homeland security advisor make him the best person for the job. “No one is better prepared to be CIA director than Mr. Brennan,” she said.
In opposing Brennan, Intelligence Committee ranking Republican member Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia criticized Brennan’s answers about leaks from the Obama administration on terrorist operations.
Implying that Brennan himself was a leaker, Chambliss said he wondered about the credibility of Brennan’s explanation of his role in funneling information to four news media commentators about a foiled 2011 al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) bombing plot.
Chambliss also said Brennan was an architect of the administration’s policy of refusing to send any more new terrorist suspects to Guantanamo Bay. The Obama administration, he said, “appears to be avoiding opportunities to capture terrorists in favor of just killing them, or relying on our foreign partners to do our intelligence collection for us.”

I admire Rand Paul for standing up. It took a lot to get these guys to say they will adhere to the constitution. One should keep their eyes open as to what follows. A drone may be flying over your house soon.

Can you tell me who owns the "progressive" media? I think you're under the impression that the media is owned by pipe smoking college professors in tweed sport coats. Last time I checked it was owned by a small group of huge corporations, like GE that owns NBC, that give massive amounts of money to republicans in return for fewer operating restrictions. It's about profit, not news, headlines are designed to get people to click on them so they can be led to the advertisements.

The vast majority of the American electorate is aware of this spreading infestation, which is destroying the formerly Grand Old Party (GOP). Yes, Robert, if he would like his nominee for CIA Director confirmed by the Senate. If you would bother to do a minuscule amount of research and think even a little bit, you would find that a growing number of law enforcement officers are out of touch and out of control. While I have no great love for Mr. Paul, he did extract from the White House and the DOJ an acknowledgement that they recognize as least some Constitutional limits to their megalomaniacal quest for power and control over the American people. We have already lost virtually all of our essential liberty as we meekly submit to continuous unrelenting surveillance by our government - An entity designed to protect us, not control us.

In January 2011 the FBI published new rules stating that they had the authority to investigate any American citizen without probable cause, without warrant and without supervisory oversight even within the FBI. They authorized themselves to obtain banking and other financial records, Internet usage, library records, credit card statements, phone records, etc., on any citizen for the purpose of conducting an "assessment".
The Department of Justice vehemently defends the right of the government to kill unarmed US citizens without judicial review, without charge, without evidence of wrongdoing. All they have to do is kill them in another country. The DOJ is rapidly working on the "legal justification" for the deployment of armed drones within the United States and drone manufacturers can barely keep up with the demand of local and state law enforcement agencies vying to get their hands on these devices.
The tin-foil I have in my house is used for cooking. Let's talk in another 5-10 years. No President is going to be stupid enough to suspend the Constitution or the Bill of Rights overnight. It will happen slowly (is happening slowly) and you won't even notice it until its too late.

We have lost most of our civil liberties through the passage of the Patriot Act, the Foreign Investigation Surveillance Act (FISA), the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the new National Defense Resources Preparedness (NDRP)!
The government has authorized the use of spy drones in American skies! You can be surveilled by any number of Federal agencies, have your phone and computer tapped, bank, medical, and private records accessed! You can be arrested without gaining access to an attorney or a trial.
We are molested at the airports or radiated for “security”. The National Defense Resources Preparedness Act (NDRP) which comes on the heels of NDAA is just another civil liberties stripping Act. This Executive Order allows the government to take pretty much whatever it wants including crops, farm equipment, vehicles, boats, aircraft and fuel to “prepare” for the national defense. This includes making people work for free. You think I’m kidding about the free labor? Here’s a line straight from the EO that says, “. . . to employ persons of outstanding experience and ability without compensation. . .” This is authorized even in peace time!
Obama eliminated the Posse Comitatus Act on New Year’s Day 2012 which allows the military to police the streets of the United States. Homeland Security has bought billions of bullets, thousands of assault weapons and 2,700 light armed vehicles; they aren’t chartered to police our country what do they need these tools of war for? The government has eliminated our 4th Amendment (NDAA) and are going after our 2nd Amendment through the back door. What’s next, the 1st Amendment?

I applaud Rand Paul for doing something. Right or wrong he made a point. He has had a larger impact than your rant will. And it's nice to see such civility when you can hide behind a monitor.
You want respect, earn respect. I respect the office of the President of the United States but not the man that is in the office. To think that he could order the killing of an American citizen for any reason does not earn respect, it earns distrust and disgust.

Last I read the Constitution there are checks and balances. This President has no more power than past Presidents, of any party. We have a Congress to pass laws and to approve/deny presidential appointments and we have a Supreme Court to review constitutionality of laws.

When Obama addressed the press shortly after his first inauguration and said: "and all of you voted for me", he got a huge laugh because those in attendance knew it was absolutely true. And that support is always displayed through the prism of the media.
I always get a chuckle whenever I see a liberal frothing at the mouth, and telling people to stop watching Fox. (And just for the record, in your post, you did NOT do that, but I have seen it put just that way in countless other posts written by your peers.) I bet you can't do it. The reason I know you can't, is because no liberal yet has been able to do it in the last decade that I've been issuing the challenge. The reason why is because no liberal network has any desire to give conservatives the same voice that liberals have on Fox. Again, just three.
By the way, I hold a double major degree in business, my wife is a physician and a conservative. So please, if your reference to the polls is to imply that Fox viewers are uneducated, it is false. Not to mention, I would submit to you that the inner city high school drop out holds many of the same political views as the Harvard professor, and didn't have to spend a dime to get them.
So much for the education liberals always point to, and then imply that education makes them so much smarter than everyone else. The political views of the inner city high school drop out will line up almost exactly with those views held by almost any liberal college professor. Eduation and intelligence are two different things, regardless of how often liberals try and equate the two as being the same.
Why can't any of these news agencies (including AP who filed the original vote tally within 2 minutes of the vote) ever include the actual roll call vote list so that we can all see who voted for/against/abstain?

Yet another re-tread coming out one door of government into the next. Why can't these guys just go away. It is a problem on both sides of the aisle. Panetta, Brennan, Hagel, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Kerry, etc....
The American Citizens are giving the executive branch, regardless of which party holds it, way too much leeway on the drone attacks. For those that say they will never do this, they already have killed American citizens with no due process. I will not stand by and let that happen with out raising my voice to my representatives in Congress.
EVERY American has a right to due process which over the course of our history has come to mean a trial by a jury of our peers if we so choose it. Scary stuff that too many aren't paying attention to.
To quote Cheney: "So"? Why go through the trouble of capturing them, exposing our troops to potential harm in doing so and laboring through a costly trial? Capture my a**! Fry 'em. One of the Americans killed by Obama's drones was a 16 year old kid. He was the target, not collateral damage. He was sitting in a restaurant when he was killed.
Obama killed his father two weeks earlier, also with a drone strike.
I don't know if this kid was guilty of anything or not. Let's say he was.
If and when the movie of this event comes out, does anybody think Obama is going to look like the good guy in this? Is this really what America does?
It's cool that we have this technology. It's wonderful we can accomplish some objectives without putting our guys in harm's way.

I'm sure you wept when over 100K Iraqis, many of them women and children and the elderly, were killed by our non-drones during Bush's war or choice.
I'm not a fan of any war but Iraqis aren't US Citizens and don't have the constitutional rights and protections that we as citizens are supposed to. As far as Iraq and Afghanistan are concerned our politicians of both parties have cost us way too much. Why did we think we could drag two nations stuck in the 2nd century all the way up to the 21st century in just a few short years?

A Comedy of (T)errors: The question was simple: Does the President have the Constitutional right to target enemies on US soil? Paul need not have suffered a flooded bladder to get the answer, which Holder was prepared to give right along. Why he withheld answer is anyone's guess, accounting for Senator Leahy's visible (and justly merited) anger. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.
2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social
Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and
participates in the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.
Congress made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in
Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers
envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their
term(s), then go home and back to work.
