Obama taps Walmart Foundation head as budget chief

Adam Crowley / PR Newswire via Newscom

Sylvia Mathews Burwell.

President Barack Obama will nominate Walmart Foundation head Sylvia Mathews Burwell to direct the Office of Management and Budget, a senior administration official confirmed to NBC News on Sunday.

Burwell, 47, runs Walmart’s philanthropic arm and served as the deputy director of the OMB during the Clinton administration and chief of staff to former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin. If confirmed by the Senate, she would take on one of the most important jobs in the administration during the middle of an intense budget battle
between the White House and Republicans in Congress.

“Burwell has a proven record as a thoughtful problem solver who builds consensus to get things done,” according to a White House official. She has a “deep knowledge of budget and economic issues along with her record of fighting for working Americans make her the perfect choice to lead the OMB at this important time.”

President Barack Obama announces the nomination of Sylvia Mathews Burwell as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Obama also introduced Gina McCarthy as nominee to head the EPA and Ernest Moniz to take over the Energy Department.

The official stressed Burwell’s history as a bipartisan problem solver who helped craft the budget surpluses seen in the 1990s.

Before joining the Walmart Foundation, Burwell was president of the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. When she left to join the retail giant in 2012, she also led Walmart's Women's Economic Empowerment Initiative.

Burwell’s appointment will also help bring diversity to the president’s cabinet, which was criticized earlier this year after Obama appointed a series of white males to top positions. She would be only the second woman to hold the position, according
to the Washington Post.

Walmart president Mike Duke said in a statement that Burell “understands business and the role that business, government and civil society must play to build a strong economy that provides opportunity and strengthens communities across the country.”

Obama will announce the nomination on Monday. Burrell would replace acting OMB director Jeffrey Zients.

Sequestration will lead to losses of about 750,000 jobs. I thought Boehner promised to create jobs when he became the Speaker 2011. But obviously, Boehner's refusal to work out a compromise with the President on the sequester has led to more job losses. Ironic?

Such hypocrisy- one minute you oppose Wal Mart but since Barry made the appointment it must be ok.

By the way, Boehner nor the gov't as a whole creates any jobs. It's not up to him to do anything but his job and if that means disagreeing with the dems lack of strategy to avoid this sequester then that's not a gop problem. Typically, you weak minded libs run into to play the blame game- such a shame you're always making up excuses for your party's own shortcomings which is displayed continually.

I can't believe this appointment. WalMart is the biggest buyer from the biggest violator of human rights in the world. I'm sure her allegiance will continue to be for WalMart and will do nothing to bring back manufacturing to the US. I suppose since Chinia and the Far East area has taken over most of the world manufacturing using slave labor she might show us how we can do the same and bring some jobs back. Ha! It seems that most all appointments by this administration have been to incompetents. Look at Homeland Security as most other agencies. A sad day. Wrong!!! So much to cover. It's difficult to cover so much stupidity.

1. According to smart Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the sequestration will lead to 170 million job losses. Poor woman doesn't even realize how many people are actually employed.

2. Just read an AP article stating the US is giving Egypt (the country in which our embassy was attacked) $250 million taxpayer dollars. Let's see, $60 million to Syrian rebels and now $250 million to the backstabbers in Egypt.

3. Guess the Obama admin. is doing the "I scratch your back if you scratch mine" game. I was wondering why Walmart backed Obama in the campaign. It's clear now.

It should be noted that Burwell also worked for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Burwell is administering a charitable foundation, not outsourcing jobs. However, I would have hesitated to take any job from Walmart. I do believe they are a soulless corporation, using the taxpayers to subsidize their underpaid labor force. So I do have questions about why someone with choices would elect to work for them in any capacity.

However, just because you have been employed by Walmart, doesn't mean that you will be operating as a shill for them in your position with the OMB. She is clearly knowledgable, has a record as someone who does care about people.

I suspect she will be good at her new job. And let's be realistic, the right wingers would disapprove of Jesus Christ if Obama nominated him for a position in this administration, so there is little hope that they will greet any name with joy. It's a knee jerk kind of thing. Rather than examining her background and abilities, they automatically assume she is no good just because Obama has put her name forward. They can't help it.

In the past, Obama was far more to the right behind the scenes than most think, he did all kinds of things to benefit corporations in sectors you usually think of as Republican... he did troop surges, expanded drone programs dramatically, didn't reign in crazy boondoggle defense spending like the Trillion dollar F-35 and the LCS, both of which don't actually work, did nothing to close the money gushing uselessly in the WOT and aid to the Paks and Iraqis, did nothing on gun control, jobs are still in the crapper..... in fact, he basically did almost nothing for his lefty constituents... much less the rest of us

Obama has been on the defensive his entire Presidency, outside of the Affordable Care Act he hasn't been able to lead to a consensus on anything.... granted he has had some real lunatic teabaggers to deal with... but the President is supposed to lead and he doesn't get a pass, that's just the way it is if you want the job

What has he really been doing besides selling out to corp America? looking for a critical national issue to distract everyone from the reality that NOTHING will get done in his second term. This isn't a new problem... everyone basically knew if he got a second term, the right would just run the clock out on him... so he started latching onto issues trying to make one catch fire and take over the national mindset... Trayvon Martin didn't explode enough, gun control is somewhat doing it, but he's already lost that fight and before you know it there will be another disaster that will get way over blown into a Presidential issue so he can seem busy.

Dropping party / right /left for a minute... I'm an American who, like all of you, has been victimized by our elected leaders on both sides.... Congressmen thinking 'I don't care what happens to America, I'm not going to work with Obama' is clearly unconscionable.... and the President whining to the people that he can't get his job done / dog ate his homework is ridiculous and getting very old.... meanwhile our money is flying out the doors at an unbelievable rate.

We are on the verge of having our entire government, at one of the most dangerous and critical times in our history, take an ENTIRE 8 YEARS OFF of work to play games with each other while we bleed money non stop.... think about that.

And another myth is created today. "The official stressed Burwell’s history as a bipartisan problem solver who helped craft the budget surpluses seen in the 1990s." The surplus was a direct result of the Contract with America. Clinton helped because he was not the ideologue that Obama is. Clinton, more than any President in my lifetime, was in love with the idea of being President and the privileges that brought. I never liked the guy and thought he was a used car salesman at Honest Injun's Used Car Lot from the moment I saw him. But, the fact is that he was more favorable to the repubs than W ever was. If Clinton had been Obama, we'd be $50 trillion in debt now.

The reality is that the budget surplus was the work of Newt & Co. The Welfare Reform Act did more for America than anything since then. I realize the libs don't believe that, but it is the truth. The thing about libs and conservs is that they approach things from different angles. Libs look at government programs and think how wonderful it is that so many people are being helped by government, and therefor we are successful. Conservs look at how many people don't need government programs and therefor we are successful. That explains why libs love Obama. We have more people dependent on government than ever before and they think that is great that we are helping so many people.

Well, again, foreign aid is only 1% of the federal budget...not much ...but it buys some good will around the world. And with such foreign aid, US corporations have an inside track to get lucrative operations there.

Egypt is one of the most important allies in the Middle East, having helped stabilize the notoriously unstable part of the world.

Usually there is bipartisan consensus in foreign policy.

The key phrase to think about - for all you Obama haters - is the phrase "Walmart’s philanthropic arm"

Nothing to do with Obama haters. The "philanthropic arm" was/is funded by money from Walmart and good ole Sam Walton-a Republican capitalist of the first order.

Let's not confuse people and corporations. (somehow that sounds familiar) people make decisions for themselves, corporations make decisions for the bottom line. du Pont (Charles maybe?) is known for having had environmental sensibilities and saying things about not harming the earth. the corporation bearing his name has done as much harm as any.

No, the key here is that Obama has always been a Centrist Corporatist at the beck and call of Wall Street. That's kind of the definition of a modern Chicago Democrat.

Plenty of money for that 'philanthropic arm' when you don't pay your workers a livable wage or give 'em health insurance (and pass that on to taxpayers!)

              Try the veal. It's delicious.

Walmart has done more for public education in NWA than any other entity in history of the state. Also major donations to overall education through Crystal Bridges museum and University of Arkansas. Northwest Arkansas would be nonexistent and had it not been for Walmart and the Walton family. You know those destroyers only developed and funded entire communities that no one else bothered to consider. Wouldn't want any facts to get in the way of your blind hatred and total lack of an open mind though. It's good to be "Progressive" and liberal without actually having to be bothered with those annoying live and let live type philosophies.

She is a charity leader, not a business leader. She was inked to be able to preach the liberal gifting programs and sell them as a good business decision. She is not a corporate leader as promoted. She will definitely work to maximize spend.

Actually they haven't forced anyone to do anything. Free will allows people to choose where they shop, where they work and whom they work for. Also Walmart actually pays people to work for them and hires many elderly and disabled just to stand in front of a store and say hello. No other company bothers doing that, but again let's not bother with facts, let's just go on blind emotional hatred. And sorry that being a stock boy or a cashier doesn't pay enough to satisfy you but those should never be jobs that someone views as anything other than a stepping stone. If you think those jobs should be able to support a family then I don't know what type of society, other than some unrealistic Utopia, could exist under those circumstances.

My wife works at walmart. We get a 10% discount on most things. She keeps health insurance on us all through walmart. She also has profit sharing that has let her take vacation plus vacation pay. Sure she could probably find something that pays better. But she enjoys working with the people that she works with and the customers that she has. But the truth is this woman started with walmart in 2012. She had nothing to do with where walmart is in the world.

Great. Now our country is going to run like Walmart. Lord help us all. Welfare recipents will be treated great and the rest of us will have to wait on them, just like we do at Walmart. What is this country coming to. It does not take a genius ti realize we need to stop spending and maybe our goverment should pay their own health care and have to work 25 years in order to retire with a pension instead of a two year term and set for life. We need not to send money to Serbia and take care of home. WOW doesn't that make sense.

"Explain how Walmart isn't the evil empire"?

                  Really?

                  Who ever said it wasn't?

Is it so hard to grasp the idea that someone doing charitable work with funding from any source must make money work as hard as possible, and has no hand in the policies by which that money is made?

Walmart desperately needs a charitable arm, just as utilities, oil companies, Monsanto, DuPont, and other mercenaries in the American economy need charities, and for the same reasons.

It may be mere whitewash on something which will always be uglier than a mud fence covered with toads, but it's an effort to justify the means by making at least some of their ill-gotten gains do good- and even if it's only 1 or 2 percent (or less) of their net, it's still a lot of money to those in desperate need.

Walmart is an evil empire which promotes and supports real, honest-to-god, kids-crushed-under-tanks socialism by selling more Chinese goods than any other single retailer in the United States- so anyone who shops at Walmart is, in their own terms, a pinko who supports socialism.

Regardless of their employment with Walmart, this person also worked for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation- and had the same job- which involves finding the most leveraged application for the money available.

You're assuming that those on the left- or moderates like myself- are hindered by the same absolutism that blinds so many fanatics on the right.

If there's any hypocrisy involved, it's in assuming those like me believe anyone associated with or working for anyone like the Walton family is irremediably evil.

Most of us understand that responsibility for evil lies with those in charge, and can often be ameliorated or to some degree nullified by those beneath them.

Point I want to make is that I am NOT happy with ANYONE even remotely associated with Walmart in any cabinet position. Walmart is a huge supporter of Communism and Socialism. Breeze the aisles and you can count on one hand how many products are NOT made in China. I am very unhappy with this appointment.

Further, I expected an agreement on tax cuts to avoid the sequester. At LEAST an attempt to make cuts WITHOUT demanding more of the Bush tax cuts be rolled back (I never consider it a TAX increase....just reimplementing what should have never been changed). In my opinion...it really WAS time for Pres Obama to concede to some cuts. I've been a supporter since 08, and I AM disappointed that he refuses to concede cuts without increases.

At this rate, I will withdrawl any financial supporter for Democrats in the midterms. Keep it up, and I'll be supporting a moderate like Christie in 2016. I live in the bagger dark-heart State of Tennessee, so my vote doesn't mean squat, but I do contribute as much as I can.

So from the arm of a large socilaist corporation, she is selected as budget director for a socialist government position. This all stinks to high heaven. Some of the largest corporations in the U.S. are socilaists, they are not capitalists. Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and some of the richest people in the World are not capitalists, they are socialists. What a joke. Wake up America. The left tries to blame big business for all it can when large corporations are as socialist as they can be. Talking about trying to pull the wool.

                        Love It,

I am quite willing to concede that I may be wrong in my interpretation of your statements on Socialism. However, my understanding of Socialism (and/or the Socialists therein) is that Socialism is an economic system wherein the government owns/controls the business enterprise and the distribution of any proceeds therefrom.

Capitalism, on the other hand, is an economic system wherein the (an) individual owns/controls the business enterprise with a focus on maximizing the profits of said enterprise, and, therefore, enriching the owner(s)/shareholder(s) through the distribution of profits from said enterprise.

Using the definitions above, I am unable to perceive that Buffet and Gates are Socialists. However, I would agree that both of these men are philanthropists of the highest order. In fact, I would challenge anyone to name a person (or persons) in a Socialistic society who has been so generous in working to benefit mankind of all colors, creeds, countries, etc.

These people are not socialist. They are Capitalist first, foremost, lastly and always. The only reason they give away money, to a point, is so they get that much Tax break. I do charitable things of donations of money and items for a tax wrrite off every year. I can usually do a couple or so hundred but these guys can do 2-3 million and not feel the loss of :pocket change".

Remember that 3 milliom Tax error on Romneys Part? He got that back this year as one has three years to correct an error on something like that.

It will surprise you on when and how long it has been going on. As for the report on what has been done, it is like he said PROPOSALS, there is nothing that can be done with a propesal except talk. It is a long way from becoming aa Bill and a Bill has a long arduous trail before becoming a Law. I don't see nothing wrong with closing loopholes on gun sales to keep guns from getting to where they shouldn't be. Everybody talks the words Gun Control, Ultimately people are not looking at the definition of gun control. To me Gun Control is in the hands/responcibility of the owner. Like driving a car, the responcibility of the operation is in the hands of the driver not the passenger.

It's a proven fact that we will never be able to pay off the national debt. The whole financial system was engineered so that we will always be in debt. I'm sick and tired of seeing one side blaming the other, BOTH sides are to blame. They all need to be fired and replaced and the federal reserve needs to be abolished. The US needs to start printing its own money again and stop taking loans. That is the ONLY solution to the whole financial fiasco.

She certainly has had a lot of impressive titles, but what did she do?? What are her accomplishments?

Her jobs and their titles all are surrounded with wealthy donors. Wealthy donors make what they want to happen...happen. What has she done herself to promote jobs for the working people.
