'Jedi Mind Meld' : White House embraces nerdy meme for sequestration push

The President's reference to a 'Jedi mind-meld' had fans buzzing — since the two aren't meant to be paired together: Jedi are from "Star Wars" and mind melds are an occurrence on "Star Trek." NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Welp, you can’t say they don’t move fast.

Hours after President Barack Obama joked about a “Jedi mind meld” to prompt bipartisan compromise on the sequester -- prompting cries of “gaffe!” from sci-fi devotees --  the White House took to Twitter add fuel to the nerdy meme created by the commander in chief.

“We must bring balance to the Force” the official White House Twitter account blasted to its nearly 3.7 million followers.

President Barack Obama discusses his Friday sequester meeting at the White House with Capitol Hill lawmakers, including House Speaker John Boehner.

The tweet included a photo of the president superimposed with the lines “These cuts aren’t the solutions Americans are looking for” and “To deny the facts would be illogical.”

The lines -- references to famous dialogue from Star Wars and Star Trek, respectively -- offered a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement that the president’s joke muddled the two series, and it also serves as a publicity tool for the administration’s website promoting its “solutions” to the sequester.

The URL for that site?  Whitehouse.gov/JediMindMeld

Sounds like Liberal Nirvana. Just ask Cass Sunstein, whose book "Nudge" talked about government being involved in "choice architecture" and "libertarian paternalism." George Orwell would be SO proud...

God..this discussion is stupid. With the REAL problems that are about to shake this country, and the beltway wants to rip on Obama about his mistake with SCI FI movies. The fact is that the GOP are not budging about tax loop holes they already agreed to to close. This country is going to FEEL this...i promise.Out of work? Blame a Republican. or a "friend" or a relative that VOTES Republican. Republicans SUCK

I wouldn't work with the president either until he delivers on those pesky spending cuts.

He may have signed it but many of the Republicans made the passage of the bill possible. They thought it was a cute way to get at and resist the President. I think they have damaged themselves permanently and, of course, us along with them. Unless they are ALL in Tea Party States, they won't survive the next two elections. Wait and see.

Why is the press referring to the President's statement as a gaffe? The minute I heard it, I thought it was a clever use of two great fantasy movies but then I am not always looking to make the President look stupid. The Republicans are a fantasy. I think the President did the right thing today. Let the Republicans live with this decision. Their constituents, not all in the top 10%, will wake shortly and God help Boehner and the rest then. Of course, they will probably disconnect their phone lines and email accounts so they will not be bothered listening to their people. They already have disconnected minds. The biggest question I think we should all be asking is this: Why do other ordinary people have to suffer salary cuts and forced lay offs while we HAVE to continue paying these dreadful people in Congress? They do not even work half the time. We should all be protesting this. They should have their salaries cut too and every time they leave DC for these breaks ,we should dock their salaries. When are we going to wake up? Where are the Banking and Wall Street protestors when we need them?

This whole sequester drama by Obama and the Dems is to portray ANY budget cuts as evil, and of course, the Repubs fault, in order to condition the sheeple to oppose cuts. The best part of this whole farce is, Obama and Lew were the ones who invented and pushed for the sequester to begin with. Unfortunately, the sheeple that voted for him are too dumb to see this.

Our main problem is a bloated govt with runaway entitlements, lots of spending waste and fraud, and high unemployment. All of the responsible economists are now saying that if our debt gets too much larger, we will reach a point of no return that will cause a huge recession, high unemployment, and no growth. Thats because too much of the money in circulation will go to debt service instead of creating jobs. The only path for the govt will be to print even more money to make up for the amounts going to service debt, thereby devaluing the dollar and causing runaway inflation.

Unless we reform entitlements and reduce the deficit, we are heading for an economic armageddon the likes we've never seen. But the stupid Libs want to spend us into oblivion and are blind to the impending doom we face without real changes. The Dems are the party of stupid, selfish, and doom. Only the Repubs are trying to be responsible and reduce the deficit without further crippling the economy by raising more taxes.

Let's see!!! What would happen if The small businesses owned and operated by We The People became as customer conscious with our House of Representatives as say we do with our own vendors? We hold back millions if not billions in withholding taxes. Why do we give it to these Neoclown led pawns of the wealthy in the form of taxes so they can pad theirs and their rich buddies wallets? Why do we get laid off and they get vacations, free plane flights, salaries, insurance, fantastic pensions, secretaries, kick backs, bribes, and jobs for people in their machines, etc etc etc? Some organized group needs to get papers together for a nation wide special election to deal with the issues of harmful leadership and governance in the name of partisanship. And I'm saying the whole country is to vote so the redistricting game is in check. We are losing our country to some bad people. These are the type of humans in which if a wealthy drunk person drove his or her car into yours and you really were seriously hurt, they would take the guy or gal who caused it to the hospital first while you or I would lay there dying. Plus they would somehow cover up the drinking.

The Budget Control Act of 2011 (Pub.L. 112–25, S. 365, 125 Stat. 240, enacted August 2, 2011) is a federal statute in the United States that was signed into law by President Barack Obama on August 2, 2011. The Act brought conclusion to the 2011 United States debt-ceiling crisis, which had threatened to lead the United States into sovereign default on or about August 3, 2011.

It was what Obama wanted and it was what he signed! Now he calls it a “dumb idea” and (predictably) blames Republicans. Only morons with no memory could believe Obama's lies.

The Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA) established a 12 member Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (or “super committee”) charged with reducing the deficit by an additional $1.2 - $1.5 trillion over ten years. The BCA also included a sequestration hammer should the super committee fail, a provision intended to “force” the super committee to act.

Despite the threat of sequestration, the super committee failed. Announcing its inability to reach an agreement on November 21, 2011, the members of the bipartisan committee stated that "after months of hard work and intense deliberations, we have come to the conclusion today that it will not be possible to make any bipartisan agreement available to the public before the committee's deadline."

So, as established in the BCA, sequestration was triggered when the super committee failed to reach an agreement. Sequestration generates automatic cuts for each of nine years, FY 13-21, totaling $1.2 trillion. Sequestration was originally scheduled to take effect on Jan. 2, 2013. However, it was delayed for two months - until March 1, 2013, by the deal struck on New Year's Eve, called the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012.
