McCain faces backlash at home over immigration issue

Fuming Arizona constituents fired criticism at Sen. John McCain over illegal immigration at town halls Tuesday.

“You said ‘build the dang fence’ – where’s the fence?” one constituent named Keith Smith demanded of McCain.

“He doesn’t want the American people to stand up and ask him the tough questions and hold his feet to the fire,” Smith told NBC affiliate KPNX.

McCain told the crowd that Americans would not support a move to arrest all illegal immigrants in the United States and deport them. He also said he wouldn’t support an effort to make people who had been in the United States illegally for decades to become guest workers because “we’re a Judeo-Christian principled nation,” drawing an angry response from some in the crowd.

McCain is a member of a bipartisan group of senators which is now working on drafting legislation akin to the bill which the Arizona senator supported in 2007, in partnership with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D- Mass. and others, to create a process for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents of the United States. That effort collapsed mostly due to conservative Republican opposition.

When McCain ran for re-election in 2010, he survived a challenge from a conservative, J.D. Hayworth, in the Republican priamry. And in the general election he emphasized the need for greater efforts to stop illegal immigrants from slipping over the Mexican border – rather than his previous support for a legalization process.

Angry constituents gave Senator John McCain an earful on immigration at a town hall in Sun Lakes, Ariz. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

For many years McCain has gotten away with changing his story often and with getting attention with loud, aggressive attacks for limited value - like with baseball doping and now with the Hagel confirmations. His focus is strictly for political gain without any conscience for real value and the antics, the play acting he goes through, as we literally see, are extensive and greatly demonstrative - without regard for the costs to the people. Disgusting at best and that is suppose to be a "Maverick".

If people didn't come here legally, they should be deported. I don't care how long they've been here ILLEGALLY. Yes, we are a nation of immigrants… LEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

Why not? Stiffen the penalty for companies that hire them, and most will leave when the work dries up. Yes, it will cost money, but an example needs to be set so other ilegals don't come. If we do nothing, the ilegals will never stop.

Chip, This Country deported forcibly or passively about a million under Ike's Operation Wetback and the population of the US was proportionately smaller. As long as people don't believe what should be done can't be done it never will. They are illegal, first one back across the border is first in line for consideration of immigrant status.

Greg...

a) You'd never find anywhere near all of them

b) There aren't the resources available

c) There is no way Congress will appropriate money for such an undertaking

Chip, Eisenhower actually rounded up only about 200,000 and 750,000 fled South. When Arizona passed the show me your papers law we couldn't find laborers, they went home to Mexico.

Chip, when there is a will… there is a way… I believe the illegals CAN and SHOULD all be deported. No special rights or considerations. I also believe that any and all businesses/persons found to have hired illegals should be fined.

I'm a first-generation American, born to LEGAL immigrants, married to a LEGAL immigrant. When my family came to the US they were un-educated and poorer than dirt, but still, they managed to come here legally, assimilated into the "culture" here, learned the language, adopted the customs (while also holding onto our ancestral traditions, language and religion), and became positively productive members of the American society. They were NEVER on welfare, never received (let alone expected) a government handout of any sort.

We work, we pay taxes and we vote… legally. And so should every other immigrant. If they are not willing to do so… they should be immediately deported (along with any kids they had after illegally immigrating here).

Would it take a while to do this? Yes. Does it seem harsh? To the liberals and illegals, yes. To me, and others like me? HELL NO. I have no sympathy for people who sneak into this country. We're better off without them. Who's gonna do the low-end jobs they do? The same people who did them before… teenagers, college kids, skilled craftsmen, legal immigrants, etc. Will we have to pay more for those services? Yeah, maybe. But that's fine with me. I'd rather pay legal Americans more. No, I'm not rich, by any means… but I'd rather pay more for legal Americans to do these jobs and also pay more for products made in the USA… I've had enough of society trying to force us to be all politically correct, all the time… even when it means sacrificing our rights, our country, our jobs, our economy… to support who? Foreigners? Illegals? China? Gimme a break.

Every patriotic American has to stop being afraid of speaking their mind and stand up to the political correctness before it completely destroys our country. Keeping illegal immigrants in the US and giving them a "path to citizenship" is just one more way the government is destroying the fabric of America… and it makes me absolutely outraged. (So it outsourcing, among other things).

Forget the stupid fence idea. It is physically inpossible to build any kind of fence that would keep out determined people. Two thousand and two hunderd miles of fence ain't going to do it. Every fence has two ends that can be walked around. The only way to stop the illigels that do come here to work is to stop the hiring of them. No jobs-no reason to come. A mandontory twelve month prison sentence for each undocumented worker is the only way. Forget the stupid fines. the rich folk just laff at such idoitcy as they make millions more from paying low wages and no benifiys. The prison sentences would go to only the presidents, CEO or individual owner of the business. No two sentences would run together. You would have to finish one sentence before you could start the next. Example, six undockunmented works equals six years in prison. Also make it REAL prison and not Camp-Cup Cake. Get real and get tough with the problem causers and the problem will go away.

The issue of illegal immigration should be about border security and the rule of law. We should not change the immigration law just to suite the illegal aliens.

Take away the benefits of illegal aliens, implement the e-verify and that would go a long way to solving any future illegal immigration.

Begin a program where the American companies must have a program to give preference to American citizens and tell people on welfare that they must work in order to receive any welfare benefits from the government or as most sane people would say the TAX PAYERS, since the government has not money except what the extract from the people who work in the private sector.

A final note let's stop confusing illegal aliens with legal immigrants.

It sounds like you are the low information voter here. It isn't just the repubs vs dems, Obama vs Bush that has failed to enforce immigration law. The last President and both political parties to fairly enforce federal immigration law was Eisenhower. That was in 1960. The beginning of the problems we have today started in 1964. Its been down hill from there from both parties ever since.

You are absolutely correct. The vitriol usually starts with their paid posters and the others eventually chime in. They seem to feed off one another. Unfortunately , this is probably the highlight of their day.

Idiots like McCain have no idea who these illegals are. How can we let them make citizens out of Forgers , identity theives, murderers, rapists and child molesters ? Are they going to pardon them too ?

They constantly tell us the border is secure, which is a lie. They won't even pass E-Verify to assure that every job goes to an American Citizen. These Amnesty leaders should be run out of town on a rail.

I actually have been to mexico and seen the horrors that go on there. That was the first place I seen a dead body and a lot people their live in fear. It would be easier to give them a path to citizenship then them keep coming illegally and getting deported on tax dollars. Let them work and pay their fair share like the rest of us.

And your personal attacks means nothing to me. Your just a internet geek that tries to insult others so you will feel better about your bad situation. I truly feel sorry for you and wish you the best

McCain is one of the many problems regarding illegal aliens. The indefensible position of this CFR lover is amazing. He should be looking out for the citizens of Arizona but instead he actively pursues blanket amnesty. Arizona's violent crime rate, property crime, illegal drugs, social services cost, public education cost are all soaring. Why? Because CA back in the late 90's finally built a small fence between San Diego and Tijuana which lead to illegal aliens going through AZ instead of CA because it was easier. Go figure I thought fences don't work.

Now every summer an increasing number of illegal aliens end up dead in the desert because their coyote dumps them out there for whatever reason. The illegal alien is victimized on both ends. In Mexico by the whole system and if they are lucky enough to get here then they are victims because they live and work under the table. This whole situation is made possible because people like McCain don't do their Constitutional responsibility. If we would control our own border and employers would everify many of these horrible crimes would disappear.
