Fuming Arizona constituents fired criticism at Sen. John McCain over illegal immigration at town halls Tuesday.
“You said ‘build the dang fence’ – where’s the fence?” one constituent named Keith Smith demanded of McCain.
“He doesn’t want the American people to stand up and ask him the tough questions and hold his feet to the fire,” Smith told NBC affiliate KPNX.
McCain told the crowd that Americans would not support a move to arrest all illegal immigrants in the United States and deport them. He also said he wouldn’t support an effort to make people who had been in the United States illegally for decades to become guest workers because “we’re a Judeo-Christian principled nation,” drawing an angry response from some in the crowd.
McCain is a member of a bipartisan group of senators which is now working on drafting legislation akin to the bill which the Arizona senator supported in 2007, in partnership with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D- Mass. and others, to create a process for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents of the United States. That effort collapsed mostly due to conservative Republican opposition.
When McCain ran for re-election in 2010, he survived a challenge from a conservative, J.D. Hayworth, in the Republican priamry. And in the general election he emphasized the need for greater efforts to stop illegal immigrants from slipping over the Mexican border – rather than his previous support for a legalization process.
Angry constituents gave Senator John McCain an earful on immigration at a town hall in Sun Lakes, Ariz. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

HaHaHaHa,You republican clowns are going the way of the dinosaurs, you frickin' crybabies. We're gonna do what we want whether you racist hippocrites like it or not.Run to your backyards and start diggin' bunkers, you idiots. Can't wait to see you raise your Bushmasters to your shoulder, right before a drone vaporizes your dumb ass.
You can report all illegal aliens or employers of illegal aliens to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at 1 (866) 347-2423.
Badmouse, nice try at trolling. Nothing like people as stupid as you are.
badlouse- Idiot
badmouse, you're a typical liberal ideologue. The republicnas aren't going the way of the dinosaurs, America is. And when it becomes a third world cesspool you and your liberal friends ask yourselves what went wrong you'll only have to look in the mirror.
what was that cathouse?
Typical politician, he will say anything to get re-elected.
They has difficulties explaining his positions to the people back home.
These guys dont know how to govern, all they care about is getting re-elected.
This is great. It's a Win Win! Either McCain gets screwed or his "supporters" do and maybe even both.
ProBusiness Comment collapsed by the community
Many speak of how Obama "won" in 2008. Yes he did "win" but only because the Republican Party nominated a useless individual like John McCain. Mickey Mouse could have beat John McCain in 2008 (come to think of it - Obama DID win and he is about as useless as Mickey Mouse).
But John McCain is a useless RINO (Republican In Name Only) and lost because he does not represent conservative constitutional principles.
How do idiots in Arizona continue to elect this useless Democrat leaning fool
To the radicals/tea party republicans, Mc Cain lost because he catered to the far right radicals in the party, and picked Palin as his vp....calling any republican who does not subsribe to the far right/tea party agenda a rino, is typical....I used to be a registered Republican, but never voted along party lines, voted for the best candidate in my opinion...
It is a shame that Ike, TR, and even Reagan would not be considered conservative enough by todays republican hard liners. The republican party needs to get some guts, and get rid of the fringe radicals, let them start their own party. And if they continue to nominate those rad nut cases, like Murdoch...etc...they will continue to lose. And if they nominate a tea party favorite like Ryan in 2016 for president, expect them to lose more...
You can call the dems, socialists and communists all you want...but the radical republicans are fascists to me, facism is not liberal, but right wing nationalists.
My friend.....you need to retire.
I am not siding with Republicans, Independents, or Democrats. All please note that prior to our occupation as a country, this land belonged to the Native Americans and the Mexicans. You cannot argue that what is now called Texas and Arizona were inhabited by Caucasians, African American, Italian, Portugese, etc............ To those in power, immigration is okay as long as the immigrants do not come from 3rd World Countries. Lets call this like we see it.
It's NOT racist and everyone knows it. It's just that some idiots like to play the race card when they have no valid argument.
What the F--k is a race card. So what card do you play when you have a no valid argument? The race card argument is so 1980's, please find another valid argument because, when you say race card, that is what you use in place of not having a valid argumement.
woman,
Can you please try and be dumber?
WS- You don't have a valid arguement for not enforcing existing law? Except maybe the race card?
Under the proposed reforms, all illegals would be put into a legalization process behind those already in the legal system.
in other words, the illegals just stay here, wait their turn, whenever that may come, if ever, in an extremely long backlogged system...
Re-Elect, then why bother changing anything? The Mexicans won't bother getting in line. They won't be able to pass the requirements to gain citizenship. A level of education and ability to learn is required. If a Mexican doesn't have that, how will they ever get legal? They won't, they know it, so they will not bother.
The President's proposal features a path to citizenship by requiring illegal immigrants to pass a background check and pay special fees associated with a new "Lawful Prospective Immigrant" visa. Applicants would also have to learn English and pay back-taxes to get a Green Card.
Pretty straightforward.

You can help push against this agenda being forced on the vast majority of American citizens.
Vote for a petition on ‘We the people’ at http: // wh.gov /vgaD
You will have to copy this url, and remove spaces between letters for it to work. Most Comments areas do not allow urls so hence these instructions.
This demands a special vote by all American citizens on proposed changes to the Immigration laws.
Thank you.
Uhmmm
Did YOU by chance "author" that petition?
It has 1 of 100,000 signators.
LOL!
I believe white rhinos are on the endangered list.
Think about this. One day the Mexicans will be the majority in the US and when that happens it will be the sadist day in American history, know why, the USA will then become another 3rd world country just like Mexico, those nations in Arfrica, Middle East. There will be corruption, graft, large drug lords instead of Sentors, and etc. just like all these other nations. Also, as far as I am concerning McCain needed to retire 20 years ago, he has not really accomplished anything for the citizens of AZ but only has thought of "ME FIRST", just like all other incumbents in politics, how the people in Calif. can keep sending Polusie & Feinstein back to congress is beyond me.
yeah just like when the Black slaves, Italians, Germans, Irish , Polish, Jews, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Indians, etc. etc. came over.
Re-elect: There's one big difference. In previous waves of immigration, the deal was: Come on in, and if you make it, that's great, and if you don't then tough luck, but you're on your own; Today, the deal is, come on in, and if you don't make it, we'll take care of you.
Illegal immigration has all but bankrupted California, and the US is not far behind.
re-elect fails to also consider that those groups of people were either brough here in forced slavery, or came through legally....
Immigration laws were different in the early 20th century. The vast majority of those who qualified back then wouldn't qualify with today's laws.
Any legal immigrant that came here after the New Deal had access to the safety net in some way or another.
California has a $851 million budget surplus.

Once again, McCain shows that he can flip-flop with the best of them -- and that like every other single elected official in D.C., he is worthless.
It is pretty evident from the questions asked in the article and many of the comments herein that this discussion isout racism and not immigration. When is the GOP going to stop pandering to racist, old farts and become atuned to the new American global demographics? Racist bigotry is not a good long term governing policy and while I am no fan of McCain, I applaud his courage to stand up to such socially approved hatred. Obviously the Ugly American is still alive and well in Arizona.
JH Yep dude the United States taxpayers are responsible for the worlds welfare cases, employment, education, and health. Yippee
A bunch of foreigners coming into a country, uninvited, with a sole purpose of taking it over thus eventually displacing those already there....that's never happened before!
Lisa, you are spot on.
I understand the frustration of law-abiding Americans who see illegals filling up our schools, jails, emergency rooms, etc.
I do not have a problem with fixing the immigration problem if (a) first, and foremost, we really secure our border so we do not have this problem again, (b) any illegals who have a job get a green card, (c) any illegals who do not have a job (unless they are elderly or children living with an illegal who has a job) are deported, and (d) none of the illegals get any federal benefits until citizenship. Those with a job and a green card can get to the back of the line for citizenship, pay a big fine ($10K) and learn proficient English.
Thank you Obama for creating a few more jobs
This Message brought to you by the illegal immigrants
This proves that sequestration should be allowed to take effect. Politicians hide from their constituents, because they are not pursuing policies that are compatible with the interests of their constituents. Next, they tell us that they need more in taxes. Gasoline prices are always high and they're going up right now, but Americans can't build a pipeline that connects the Canadian tar sands to the refineries in Houston. Enough is enough. There is no longer any reason for the American people to support this government, because this government does not support the American people.
Shawn D - you are an idiot. This is the United States of America. Yes what you said is pandering to their culture. If they want to speak Spanish to each other OK, but when you speak to me speak English.
I worked in the public sector for a lot of years and know that the one word they understand is 'POLICE' and it's amazing how fast they learn English.
No Habla - get it
McCain...
Thanks for your prior service in the military.
Now take your sorry ass back home and get out of Washington. You are only representing yourself and NOT the American people.
not that i disagree with you, but mccain only represents arizona. we're the clowns who keep electing him...
Who was the guy who ran for President in 2008, because it sure as hell wasn't John McCain.
Arizona voters, in addition to McCain supporting illegals, Jeff Flake your other Senator and a member of the Gang of Ocho, supports it also. I suggest you vote him out of office at your next opportunity. I personally don't care if it's a Republican or Democrat that supports illegals, I will vote against either if and when the opportunity arises.
Those good old Judeo-Christians are fine with the religious teachings....as long as it's not in THEIR backyard. And what old coot thinks building a fence will solve anything? Unless it's patrolled it's worthless. Not a fan of McCain since he turned bitter but he should know that common sense is a tough sell to his constituency.
This sounds like Obama's "go to the back of the line," ploy.
Where exactly is the "back" of the line? Mexico City? LA?
San Fran, DC and Chicago
Immigration is very complex but only in Republican land (current version) is it reduced to something so simple. First a little history. There was a time when the SW wasn't in the USA. Not so long ago. Mexicans are a mixture of indiginous people and Europeans, some more mixed than others. Many of the Northern Mexicans have Apache blood and there historic territory was well in the current US boundaries. So it isn't so simple. (and lest you say that was a long time ago, think how you border fence building folks feel about Israel and the right of white European Jews to return to the homeland). A fence will never completely work. Border is too big, we have oceans and where there is a will, there is a way. The key is to decrease the will. But we want Mexicans as we need them for our yard work, our meat plants, and for manual labor during boom times. Did I forget about agriculture, where I live I dare you to find more than a handful of white people willing to pick strawberries. So a rational program of guest workers would be great. Then you have to tax the employers so that the social problems that come along are covered. That would include schools and healthcare. Again, in my area, we have a bunch of enormously wealthy farmers who employee many mexicans yet I see their families for free at the hospital and the schools get stuck with a bunch of kids who don't speak English. Just another way to privatize the gains and socialize the losses. And I wonder who is more deserving of living in a border town, a US citizen whose family moved here 20 years ago or young Jorge whose family was there 500 years ago? A country must control its borders but this is a complex problem and current Republican thought must be able to fit on a bumper sticker and have a large degree of mean sprititedness to it to fly these days.
Nonsense.
The problem is with the illegals. It is not complex. Either they come here legally or not at all.
How is this mean spirited? It is causing a great amount of disruption in our country.
Come here legally or stay out.
He's old, and pretty clearly isn't going to run again in 2016....when Goldwater was at that stage of his life, he started saying what he felt, and seemed to be happier in the last few years of his life as a result...maybe McCain should learn from Goldwater's experience?
it was a fare fight they lost
What was a "fair" fight and who lost what?
