McCain faces backlash at home over immigration issue

Fuming Arizona constituents fired criticism at Sen. John McCain over illegal immigration at town halls Tuesday.

“You said ‘build the dang fence’ – where’s the fence?” one constituent named Keith Smith demanded of McCain.

“He doesn’t want the American people to stand up and ask him the tough questions and hold his feet to the fire,” Smith told NBC affiliate KPNX.

McCain told the crowd that Americans would not support a move to arrest all illegal immigrants in the United States and deport them. He also said he wouldn’t support an effort to make people who had been in the United States illegally for decades to become guest workers because “we’re a Judeo-Christian principled nation,” drawing an angry response from some in the crowd.

McCain is a member of a bipartisan group of senators which is now working on drafting legislation akin to the bill which the Arizona senator supported in 2007, in partnership with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D- Mass. and others, to create a process for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents of the United States. That effort collapsed mostly due to conservative Republican opposition.

When McCain ran for re-election in 2010, he survived a challenge from a conservative, J.D. Hayworth, in the Republican priamry. And in the general election he emphasized the need for greater efforts to stop illegal immigrants from slipping over the Mexican border – rather than his previous support for a legalization process.

Angry constituents gave Senator John McCain an earful on immigration at a town hall in Sun Lakes, Ariz. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

The path to citizenship was the only thing out of W's mouth that ever made sense. Ask a republican why George would ever come up with an idea like that... the reason is the same for democrats.

We need to build a big, double layer wall. Walls are tangible, unlike laws and the lack of will to enforce them.

Tunneling is much more time consuming than waltzing or skipping across.

After they finish their tunnel, we can fill it with cement and let them dig another one.

I can see why political parties are for amnesty, but i am surprised that other minorities are not clamoring against amnesty. Anybody for amnesty, should spend a year living in a border state...I think that I'll move to Canada.

Canada's immigration is wide open. They are far more culturally diverse then the US. They literally have everyone living there. In harmony too.

        Liberals don't care.

Free stuff, for everyone. The rich guys will pay for it all.

Fact is, all of my LEGAL Mexican, Puerto Rican , and Dominican friends resent ILLEGAL immigrants as much as the rest of us.

This is a nation of LAWS. You don't get to pick and choose the ones you enforce, MR OBAMA.

MoreJustice, you are full of shat. They have a process. It isn't a deal where you just go there and they hand you a maple leaf and say "welcome aboard, need some government assistance?". Most countries require you have some sort of marketable skill to gain citizenship. Some countries allow hardship to be a determining factor, like being persecuted in your homeland and etc. The US should require job skills of some kind to be allowed entrance.

Actually, Canada's immigration isn't more open than ours. It's different--and smarter. Canada reserves the most immigration spots for persons holding advanced degrees in critical fields or who are willing to invest in a business that would create new jobs for Canadians.

The U.S. could do well to emulate Canada's and Australia's immigration policy.

So then... Why allow somewhere between 11 and 20 million Mexicans to become automatic citizens? You know these aren't 20 million doctors, engineers or architects, right? It is more like 20 million farm hands, illiterate laborer types. Why support it?

          #392.7 - Wed Feb 20, 2013 2:45 PM EST

The proposed reforms don't include automatic citizenship. It would grant legal residency which has to be renewed every 2 years with eventual citizenship behind all of those already in the legal system.

                Exactly.

This is the Democratic Party's objective- and we all know it.

And we're headed down the path to ruin because too many Republicans stayed home in November, and allowed it to happen. A measly win by 4% of the popular vote, and this jerk in the White House continues in campaign mode, and refuses to work with the Republicans.

Well, just like the sequester HE WANTED, and SWORE he would not allow to be hijacked, he tries to blame it on the Republicans, again.

But I finally see signs that the Independents, and fiscally conservative Democrats, are realizing that the man has NO INTENTION of curbing his out-of-control spending and growth of the federal government. Much less, reforming entitlement programs that WILL go broke if we don't fix them, now..

But ya know, keep it up Barry. The Republicans will regain the Senate in two years.

You know I''m for fences and moats to keep the critters out, but I always thought that the USA was open to folks that WANT the opportunity to have a better life. Now if US citizens get down on their luck they are eligible for Unemployment comp(6 months to 1 year) welfare, and now health-care. So if a illegal get down on their luck, should they be eligible for the same? NO, but really how many do that, or try to get it? Pregnant women come here have their child, again how many really do that? MY real question what is the ratio for and against this? 50/50 20/80, I haven't seen though figures.

Our government behaves like we were living back in the 18TH Century when this country was brand new and wide open. Here it is 2013 and we have too many people. We can't feed our own. We have 47-million Americans on food stamps. We cannot educate our own. We have over $1-Trillion dollars in out-standing education loans, taken out by students, many of whom cannot get a job and are still living at home. We have over 23-million Americans who have given up on looking for work. Approximately, 20-percent of Americans who want to work cannot get jobs. Our dysfunctional government continues out-sourcing and in-sourcing Americans jobs.

Our government lies so much they cannot even produce honest, real statistics that measure anything except the size of their lies. Americans have no real idea about core figures measuring the health of the country, like GDP, inflation, employment, unemployment, all of it. All we know is that the government is a bald-faced liar and Ameirca is a country that hasn't told the truth to itself for over 30-years.

Things are so bad that immigration is stuck back in the 18TH Century, when everyone in America was an immigrant. Now our government combines legal and illegal immigration into one. Back in the 1980s our government granted amnesty to over 3-millions illegal aliens (the governemnt's figures). The government promised that they would fix the immigration problem and would never resort to amnesty ever again. Yet, here we are with the same problems, and the same broken system, and this time our dishonest, treasonist, god-hating government is going to grand amnesty -- this time to some 13-million illegal aliens -- again without even bothering to fix the real problems.

How much longer is the American Citizen going to standby by while this completely corrupt and dysfunctional government destroys America?

The Statue of Liberty needs to be closed until "Further Notice."

That isn't the point. The point is there is a system of requirements. Enforce the laws and make it right. Hell, I have no problem with anyone coming here if they have job skills. I do, however, have a problem with people coming here who can't even read or write in their own language and will be a burden on everyone else. I'm not asking for much, just make it fair and reasonable. Don't make it about votes. It will backfire on whoever gets credit for it if it is about votes. Will it be an Obama idea? Don't worry if it is, He will blame someone else, and you will be in full support of that blame.

So illegals are illiterate in their own languages? Please produce facts.

There are far more marginally literate U.S. citizens who are a burden on the taxpayer than illegals.

"Illegal" is NOT a noun. It is an adjective.

That said, the obvious reason we have more Mexicans here illegally (adverb--okay) is because of our shared border and the differences between our economies. It is a fact (outside the GOP bubble) that currently more Mexicans who are here illegally actually are leaving the United States than are entering. This means we have a net out-migration of Mexican nationals who are here illegally. Do I need to repeat that?

The best cure for illegal immigration from Mexico is more economic growth and job opportunities in Mexico. Fortunately, that is happening. That phenomenon, along with increased enforcement at the border and at the employment level, is responsible for this reversal in the migration pattern.

re-elect, I am sure there are plenty of Mexicans running over the border who have the equivalent of a Harvard PhD. You are right. I am being sarcastic.

Reality is, Mexico doesn't have the resources to educate their people. Some learn things and actually go to schools and colleges there. People in the sparsely populated regions don't get much as far as government support because the government can't afford to fund it. Many of them are illiterate. They can speak, but cannot read or write their own language. That is why they pick vegetables and shovel dirt when they come here. These aren't vegetable picking Mexicans with a 6 year college degree. Get the point, or no? Do we need more stupid people in this country? I know we can agree that the uneducated in the USA are typically what we see drawing off the government to live. We do not need more people like that here.

Hand, true, due to our currently poor economy, many illegals have gone back to their homes (or other places) to find work. but i'm not sure about the net statisitics of more leaving then entering, would like to see some legitimate facts on that.

and the best cure for illegal immigration, from a US standpoint, is to eliminate the incentives for people illegally entering, i.e. citizenship for babies of illegals, stiffer penalties for businesses hiring illegals, denial of government services and schooling. in other words, treat them like they would treat us if we illegally entered their country.

the problem of economic growth and opportunity in mexico is a problem for the mexican people, businesses, and government, only they can correct that. but something i do find funny, is opposition to treaties like nafta that do exactly that, increase job opportunity and stimulate economic growth. funny that the same people/party that wants liberlized immigration doesn't want our jobs going there...

Invisible hand, the reason Mexicans are heading back to Mexico is because there aren't any jobs available here for them. Those are the people I'd want to stay. they are willing to work and won't stay here if there isn't any work. The ones I don't want here are the ones who come and don't bother looking for a job. They just head to the welfare office and get signed up. Ambition and a want to work is enough for me to say I am alright with some sort of program to enter and be legal.

Illegals don't take the crappy jobs because they are illiterate. They take them because employers don't check their immigration status or accept their forgeries without asking questions.

That's not to say that illegals are PhDs with crappy jobs, but claiming that all illegals are illiterate is simply wrong.

It sounds like Sen. McCain wants his cake and eat it too. He made his promises to get reelected, and now when he has to deliver on those promises, the shoe is on the other foot. Typical politician, just like Obama says what he has to to get elected and then back peddles as fast as possible. Question: How can you tell when a politician is lying? Answer: Their mouth is open and their lips are moving.
