McCain faces backlash at home over immigration issue

Fuming Arizona constituents fired criticism at Sen. John McCain over illegal immigration at town halls Tuesday.

“You said ‘build the dang fence’ – where’s the fence?” one constituent named Keith Smith demanded of McCain.

“He doesn’t want the American people to stand up and ask him the tough questions and hold his feet to the fire,” Smith told NBC affiliate KPNX.

McCain told the crowd that Americans would not support a move to arrest all illegal immigrants in the United States and deport them. He also said he wouldn’t support an effort to make people who had been in the United States illegally for decades to become guest workers because “we’re a Judeo-Christian principled nation,” drawing an angry response from some in the crowd.

McCain is a member of a bipartisan group of senators which is now working on drafting legislation akin to the bill which the Arizona senator supported in 2007, in partnership with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D- Mass. and others, to create a process for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents of the United States. That effort collapsed mostly due to conservative Republican opposition.

When McCain ran for re-election in 2010, he survived a challenge from a conservative, J.D. Hayworth, in the Republican priamry. And in the general election he emphasized the need for greater efforts to stop illegal immigrants from slipping over the Mexican border – rather than his previous support for a legalization process.

Angry constituents gave Senator John McCain an earful on immigration at a town hall in Sun Lakes, Ariz. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

This is funny since it was the American electorate that voted Obama back into office, and Obama is the last one that wants to do with anything that addresses real border control.

How can a country pick and choose what laws to enforce? McCain said that Americans would not stand for deporting illegals in this country...what Americans? I would support deporting anyone who is not here leagally and does not pay taxes but uses our system. Let us deport the criminals and concentrate on the Americans who are here legally...who work above board and pay taxes...who are legally married to a person of the opposite sex and actually raise there own children that they had after they got married. The illegals in this country require just as much time and money as the gays who are not married and can not reproduce but demand all this time and attention for equal rights. Send the illegals back to wherever they came from and take the gay and the unmarried living in sin with them.

    @Ralph,

I also would support deporting anyone who is not here leagally. However, most if not all of them, do pay taxes. They maynot pay Federal income tax, but they pay gas tax, sales tax, etc etc.

After that, your comment just turned into complete garbage. You don't believe in equal rights for everyone, and you state that in your post. You are not an real American in any sense. The Americans I know support equal rights for all legal citizens.

So you are saying the don't pay taxes. If you are not paying Federal Taxes you are not paying taxes. If I try that I get called on it, however that isn't actually the big fly in the ointment. THEY ARE HERE ILLEGALLY, KNOW THEY BROKE OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS, and want a free ride. As a Nation we can not afford another 30 million people form anywhere. LA is going broke in part based on the costs of social services for illegal's. Schools are overcrowded and failing, health care is a mess and we should just wave them in because they overstayed their visa or snuck across the border? I think NOT! And BTW Sally Ann this is an invasion not " immigration" immigration involves applications and being vetted. No different than you coming home to find an uninvited guest ransacking your drawers. Realists would call that person a burglar.

While I agree to a certain extent. The illegal immigration issue isn't a bigotry issue. No one I know opposes legal immigration. We have the most generous *legal* immigration quotas in the world and none of your supposed "scared white bigots" opposes those.

Illegal immigration is a BIG law enforcement problem here near the border. It also has environmental impacts (overpopulation), public policy impacts (illegal immigrants and their children disproportionately consuming public services, and so on. So before you go playing the race card, you might want to look at the issue a little more closely.

@sdbolt, you are correct, the GOP does have their token blacks, browns, yellows, but they only make headlines when the GOP leaders need to bring them out of the closet, so to speak. So no, you need to get educated.

The educated people see clearly what the GOP is like, and what the GOP is doing to our country. Then they wonder why the GOP is a vanishing breed of low informed people. Well, when people like McCain is part of the leadership, need anymore be said?

JFK by todays standards would be a conservative..'ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country'!

C'mon folks, admit it. If the "illegal immigrants" were all blue-eyed blonds who spoke English with a slight Scandinavian accent, these town-hall shouters wouldn't be the least bit upset about them.

No one is suggesting that. People are simply suggesting that the border be secured and that employers be prevented from hiring illegal immigrants.

Yes, lets talk about the illegals and voting. First off, it's a GOP LIE that illegal's vote. Most illegals keep a low profile, they don't want to be caught breaking the law and getting deported, not talking about the criminal bunch. Yes, they have a illegal SS #, and pay into SS and never get any of that money back. Another GOP LIE that they do.

Yes, the illegals have friends and relatives who do vote, and no doubt they vote the way the illegals would vote. And that p's off the GOP, because they know they will never, ever get those votes. They have insulted the minorities too many times.

So when some smuck say's the illegals are voting, they are LYING. But it's funny the GOP just has to have the illegals make up their low waged, non union work force. Ever wonder why that is? Yes, they do take jobs away from Americans.

But there are some jobs American's won't do, such as farm/field work. Get those illegals permits to work during that season, then ship their rears back home. I don't see either party supporting any strong laws that would really prohibit any company or business from hiring them. Lets pass a law, the owner, or the CEO and his management bunch serve 5 yrs, no parole, for each illegal they hire, plus a $5K fine for each illegal hired.

Any single owner, and his immediate family would never ever receive another license to do any type of business after being found guilty of hiring illegal workers.

Put a law like that into effect, most of the illegals would self deport themselves, as they would starve here. But until something like that is done, the politicians are just blowing smoke up our rear ends.

The bottom line is: The majority of business owners tend to vote republican. These same business owners love the cheap labor with no benefits. But you can't have it both ways. These illegal immigrants are not wrong to want some sort of rights and benefits for their families. So as long as employers employ them and break the rules, we will always have them here. We never go after the guys at the top!

Illegals, like all criminals, need to take their punishment. Fines ARE necessary, as is probation if we agree to let them stay. Jail time and even deportation will cost us money, and if they've committed no other crime, I see no reason for it. Reagan and the congress promised to seal the border, when they granted the LAST amnesty. That's LONG pass due!

I'm sick of it put someone in Washington that is going to stand up for Americans. This has been going on for 50 years and now it's gotten so big we can't stop it. Good Job!
