“You said ‘build the dang fence’ – where’s the fence?” one constituent named Keith Smith demanded of McCain.
“He doesn’t want the American people to stand up and ask him the tough questions and hold his feet to the fire,” Smith told NBC affiliate KPNX.
McCain told the crowd that Americans would not support a move to arrest all illegal immigrants in the United States and deport them. He also said he wouldn’t support an effort to make people who had been in the United States illegally for decades to become guest workers because “we’re a Judeo-Christian principled nation,” drawing an angry response from some in the crowd.
McCain is a member of a bipartisan group of senators which is now working on drafting legislation akin to the bill which the Arizona senator supported in 2007, in partnership with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D- Mass. and others, to create a process for illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents of the United States. That effort collapsed mostly due to conservative Republican opposition.
When McCain ran for re-election in 2010, he survived a challenge from a conservative, J.D. Hayworth, in the Republican priamry. And in the general election he emphasized the need for greater efforts to stop illegal immigrants from slipping over the Mexican border – rather than his previous support for a legalization process.

Study: Hispanics a growing slice of the American pie chart

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
A new national survey shows that the Hispanic population in the U.S. rose 47 percent from 2000 to 2011 and that the rate of growth in Florida was even higher — 62 percent.
The Pew Research Hispanic Center in Washington, a respected demographic research institute, found that the Hispanic population in the U.S. during those 11 years swelled from 35.2 million to 51.9 million. The total U.S. population as of 2011 was 311.6 million, meaning that 16.7 percent of people living in the U.S. were Hispanic, compared to 12.5 percent in 2000.
And that percentage is expected to increase. Of all births in the U.S. in 2011, 23.1 percent were to Hispanic women.
The 2011 numbers are based on the American Community Survey, conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, which surveyed 3 percent of the households in the U.S. and extrapolated total numbers from those interviews. The households were contacted during 2011 and the numbers were compiled over the past year. The 2000 numbers were based on the census from that year.
The center says its figures include undocumented persons. There are thought to be 11-12 million undocumented persons in the U.S., 80 percent of whom are Hispanic.
The growing numbers of Hispanics, especially the increase in Hispanic voters, is already affecting U.S. political life. In November Democrat Barack Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney for the presidency, in part by winning the Hispanic vote by 71-26 percent.
Republicans’ hardline position against the legalization of the undocumented cost them many Hispanic votes. Since then GOP members of Congress have begun negotiating with Democrats on a comprehensive immigration reform overhaul, to improve relations with Hispanic voters.
By far the largest Hispanic community in the U.S. is persons of Mexican descent, with 33.5 million, or 64.5 percent of all Hispanics. Many persons of Mexican descent come from families that have lived in the U.S. for many generations. Two-thirds of all persons of Mexican descent in the U.S. were born here.
Puerto Ricans, who are U.S. citizens from birth, number 4.9 million; Salvadorans, 1.95 million; Cubans, 1.88 million. Guatemalans, who have a large community in Palm Beach County, number 1.22 million nationwide.
Not only did the total number of Hispanics and their percentage of the total U.S. population increase, but the percentage of Hispanics in the U.S. who are U.S.-born increased from 59.9 percent to 63.8 percent. Hispanics have the lowest median age of any population group, 27, compared to 33 for African-Americans; 36 for Asians; and 42 for whites.
Florida is home to the third-highest total of Hispanics: 4.35 million, or 22.8 percent of total state population. It is far behind California, which includes 14.4 million Hispanics, and Texas with 9.8 million. Both those states are 38.1 percent Hispanic.
The break down by country of origin is very different for Florida than it is for the nation as a whole. Among Florida Hispanics, 35 percent are of Cuban descent; 26 percent Mexican; and 23 percent Puerto Rican.
Charles Zelden, Nova Southeastern University political scientist, says he looks at his own campus and sees more and more Hispanic students.
“We are the future of America,” he says. “The Latin population is growing even faster than the common wisdom would assume.”
Zelden says the numbers contained in the report and the outcome of the November election make it evident why the Republican Party has made a Hispanic, Cuban-American Sen. Marco Rubio, the face of the party ever since the November election.
“It makes sense, although given the numbers it would make even more sense if he were Mexican and not Cuban,” Zelden says.
He speculates about whether newly-elected Texas GOP Sen. Ted Cruz, who is already making his voice heard on Capitol Hill, may eventually challenge Rubio as the Hispanic face of the party.
At least 10 states around the country saw increases in their Hispanic populations of more than 100 percent since 2000. In the South, Georgia and North Carolina saw large increases and both now have more than 800,000 Hispanic residents.
The survey shows that educational levels of Hispanics rose over the 11 years studied. The high school dropout rate among Hispanics 16-19 years old plummeted from 17.5 percent in 2000 to 6.8 percent in 2011. The percentage of Hispanics 18-24 years old enrolled in college rose sharply, from 20 to 32.9 percent in the 11 years.
The median income of a Hispanic household in 2011 was $39,000. That compared to $67,000 for Asian households; $54,400 for whites; and $32,600 for African-Americans. Some 13 million Hispanics live in poverty, 25.9 percent of the total Hispanic population and 22 percent receive food stamps. Only African-Americans have higher rates in those categories, with 27.9 percent living in poverty and 28 percent receiving food stamps.
But Hispanics have by far the highest percentage of persons without health insurance, 30 percent. That compares to 10.8 percent for whites; 15.4 percent for Asians; and 18.6 percent for blacks.

This timely study underscores that the stakes are very high in future elections. It most likely is fueling the GOP/TP efforts to get a larger slice of this pie, however, looking at excerpts of John McCain's Town Hall meetings yesterday and the reception he received from constituents who are not on the same page as Congress shows it will be a tough slog to get any new laws on the books. But these statistics are a real eyeopener for the future of the country.

Many speak of how Obama "won" in 2008. Yes he did "win" but only because the Republican Party nominated a useless individual like John McCain. Mickey Mouse could have beat John McCain in 2008 (come to think of it - Obama DID win and he is about as useless as Mickey Mouse).

We all talk about the immigration issue, but there has never been 1 President, Republican or Democrat, that has done anything until President Obama. He takes on the hard issues and makes Congress do something. I think that is why Congress does not like him, because he makes them actually earn a pay check.

So? The US was built on immigration. Why shouldn't their be a path to citizenship for these people? If we used our military personnel to protect and manage our borders rather than sending them to die in useless wars then maybe we would have a better, legal immigration system. Mexicans come in illegally because it's easy but also because we don't make it easy on them.
Remember, a hundred years ago people said the same kind of things about Irish immigrants. They're taking our jobs and what not. Get these people legal and then do something about our borders and the misuse of our military. That's the reform we need. We aren't ending immigration so you xenophobes need to stop barking up that tree. All throughout US history it's never worked. We have always been a country of immigrants and we always will.

Raymond, when I was back in London a few years ago, I was amazed at how the makeup of the population had changed from my previous visit a few years prior. We are becoming an endangered species if not so already, its not all bad, just takes time to adjust.
The illegal immigrants can get health care if they want it! I know personally of an illegal mexican that is being treated(free) for stage 4 breast cancer. All illegals that I know can get medical care n still stay under the radar. It seems that the mexicans do not want to stand in the long lines n get a green card, plus it does cost quite a bit of money to do this n u may have to pay taxes on what u earn. It is a choice that most prefer to avoid due to the lines, forms n money that they have to contend with. Why should they get it free when others follow our laws n rules. It is not fair to those that jump through our hoops to stay here legally.

if my family cant find work or learn English in public schools but someone from another country is given what they need to survive FIRST, why do I have an allegiance to this country? I don't or at least I haven't in a while. I love this country, but I don't even get to interact with Americans anymore in live person. there is a huge difference between migrant workers and illegal immigrants, while migrant workers may be illegal they are the ones that gave the label "Mexicans are hard workers"....illegals immigrants, non-migrant workers are extremely lazy...just wait..you will have one on your couch soon enough. While I love all colors, ethnicities, I am not willing to sacrifice my constitutional rights to food and shelter for someone who wants nothing more than to sit and sit and sit and sit...and get super huge. While not all illegals do this, it is my experience that in a few short years of being in the US, they dont even move around, they refuse to eat whole foods, and in general are kinda slobby. Not all, but a lot.
We have an issue where the illegals dictate what the layout of the cities should look like now that they occupy it, but that is only causing a breakdown in quality of our cities...We need to fight back and say if you want to stay you will make your business look clean, wholesome, and well organized. No yellow or red painted buildings with multi layers of lead paint...not more bums on the porches...etc...we need visually beautiful buildings and businesses or this country is in a race for 3 world conditions

I am an American of Irish decent, and live in Boston, and even here we have many Spanish speaking folks. So, I simply learned "basic" spanish.. its not too difficult.
Thats what we expect of them, correct? To learn our language, so why no reciprocate, and at least try for the sake of communication? Thats not pandering to them, its just to your advantage living anywhere that you encounter the Spanish language so often. Just a suggestion.

My country speaks English, and that is where I reside. If I was in Mexico or elsewhere I would absolutely learn the language. If I was to learn the Spanish language it would only be misery, I don't want to be polluted by all the hate they think I cant understand....im referring to why someone would go from speaking to their friend in English, notice another individual, and then speak in Spanish while laughing at them....so no thanks. If I need it for business purposes then ok, but my family is Indian, meaning Navajo and Apache from New Mexico, no Spanish needed to do my school, job, or interact with my family and friends....just when I go buy something or need service would I have to speak Spanish...and right now my countries private businesses needs the work more and a foreign one, apparently circle k hires anyone

Road less,excellent post, I feel your pain I live in a sanctuary state and frequently run into the communication barrier. People who do not have to come in contact with this would feel differently if they were put in our shoes and actually worked for a living (if I am stepping on your toes move your feet (shawn). I have traveled abroad and across the US it is a shame what is happening in great states like Arizona,Cali,Florida etc. The reason whites are reproducing less is because of the responsibility of children and the cost. When you actually have to be responsible for paying for your children and raising them, with the cost of well everything, the days of 5-10 kid households of the fifties, sixties,seventies are gone. The only people with families this size are typically minority and on social assistance and actually get increases for each additional child.

I live in a border community, with my home located within 15 miles of the Mexican border. Although I'm an Anglo, I happen to like the multicultural environment in which I live. I own and manage income properties; my best tenants are Hispanic. To those racist xenophobes who feel they live in a foreign country: move to Utah or Idaho--you'll feel right at home, in a nice, homogenous, white-bread environment.

I have long said that I understand the plight of the illegal immigrant wanting to better themselves and families. The problem is that they are doing it illegally, and are placing our laws secondary to their needs.It should be a felony, not a misdemeanor to be here illegally, and the penalties should be strictly enforced! Instead we have a government that actually rewards law breakers, by way of giving them financial assistance, to live here illegally! Jeffor is hitting the nail on the head. For all of you who think that immigration today is just as easy as it was when our grandparents or great grand parents came, get a clue. Just look at what Henry Ford did for immigrants. Please show me employers who are currently doing this, or even our own government who provides these services without hassle. While I might not agree 100% that "the American way is the right way of living", and he might have been foisting his own ideals on these particular workers, at least they had training courses and language courses available to them, and a clear, defined path to citizenship.
Regarding speaking English, show me a group of 20 random American kids that can speak English fluently and without major errors and I'll buy that immigrants should be forced to the same standards of "learning perfect English". In about 10-20 years you won't even have this argument against immigrants, because you won't be able to expect if from our own citizens.
It's always so nice to see everyone forgetting where they came from, and that our very near ancestors were seeking the very lifestyle that illegal Mexicans once were, and came here by the same measures. Also so very 'Christian' of us to say "nope, we made it here first, the rest of you can suck it!"
And last but not least, how about instead of blaming Mexican's for "taking our jobs" how about you blame first your fellow American employer who gave them that job.

The Marxists infiltrated the media and government decades ago, but now occupy the highest office in the land. Their aim is to erase "white" culture, white people, and rewrite their history of conquering, building, fighting and dying for this country. The problem with the Anglo-Saxon culture (as far as the internationalist Marxists are concerned) is that they value independence and individualism, and simply wouldn't buy into the propaganda of the subversives here.
They planned and schemed for years how to destroy the fabric of this nation and turn it into something else.
First, you mock and ridicule tradition and heritage of the dominant people. You call them names and accuse them of evil doings and small-mindedness.
You drive wedges, as many as you can, between different groups, men, women, blacks, Hispanics, Homosexuals, union members, non-union members and any other group associations that can be fabricated.
Claim "compassion" most of all. It gives people the illusion of the moral high ground, thus allowing you claim to champion universal rights for all, while you simultaneously and intentionally discriminate against the dominant group. Ignore any criticisms of this and simply claim racism.
Change immigration patterns (as in the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965) that diverted most incoming immigrants from Western Europe to the third world. They are dissimilar others who will help break up the unity and nationalistic "glue" that hold society together.
Next, use taxpayer Dollars to subsidize low income groups of dissimilar others who reproduce at the highest rates (The Great Society). Over decades, their numbers will swell in addition to third world populations to permanently alter the demographics away from the original people, their values, their heritage...and their genes.
Now the party that caters to this group (the internationalist Marxists disguised d.b.a. "Democrats") has the majority of voters as we see today.
Next, it's on to forcing a global government that supercedes the sovereignty of independent nations. That is the plan, and it's foundation is already laid.
This could have been stopped in the 1940's through the 1950's, but politicians of any party rarely resist the temptation to make millions of Dollars by turning their head away from something poisonous for the country decades away.

I always laugh when Anglos complain about not being able to understand Hispanics speaking Spanish among themselves. Perhaps they should have studied harder in Spanish class while in high school. My relatives in Europe speak at least three languages fluently; some speak as many as five. I can get by in French and Spanish, and I even learned Latin so that I could converse with the Pope.

As I go through the LONG list of liberal attacks I notice one very telling point: Conservatives speak about the topic of discussion while liberals resort to name calling. But that is what happens when a liberal cannot defend the point itself.
What liberals TRY to incorrectly convince others is that Conservatives are against immigration. Wrong. Conservatives are FOR immigration - but LEGAL immigration.
We have (pick a number) 15 million ILLEGAL immigrants. Those who came into this country KNOWING they broke the law. And now want to be made "legal". Afterall, according to liberals, we CAN'T get rid of them NOW!!

First, no food stamps. No welfare. No education. No benefits for breaking our laws.
Second, random checks of businesses and if you get caught having an illegal worker on your premises immediate $10,000 fine for each illegal worker. Get caught again and it is 7 days in jail and the fines are $25,000. Get caught again, well, you get the point. Make the punishment for HIRING an illegal worker so severe and they won't. No jobs = no illegal immigrants. They will go home.
If you take away the incentive to STAY illegally they will leave. THEN we set up a LEGAL immigration process for those that give a $#%$ about this country and respect our laws.
Immigration? That's a good thing.

Watch a documentary once in a while, there are business owners in the Carolinas that drive over the border to bring workers for their slaughter houses and then call to report the illegals when they are done with them so they go back to Mexico on the government's dime. We need to Stop ILLEGAL immigration! They're not just doing jobs that Americans don't want. Do they pay taxes? Don't get me wrong most of these people work very hard, but are a drain on the system if they don't pay taxes, have healthcare coverage, learn the language or get paid wages that are in line with their American counterparts. Who's footing the bill for the education of their children and the infrastructure around them? We all know that the health care provided to uninsured illegals here in the states is being averaged into our hospital costs and our insurance premiums, which have PROPORTIONATELY increased along with illegal immigration over the last 20 years? These costs are also being passed along to Medicaid and Medicare, which means that not only are they increasing our insurance premiums, but that we're paying for them again with our tax dollars.
Our tax dollars and insurance premiums should not be used to recoup the cost of healthcare given to illegal immigrants, who shouldn't even be here in our country in the first place.
To the people that disagree, we should ask them should this: If a few illegal immigrants knocked on your door and demanded that you pay some medical bills for them, would you pay them?
Just look around and you'll see who's doing 90% of the residential renovations, construction and property maintenance jobs. That's certainly what we're seeing in the northeast. These are not just jobs that Americans don't want.
Unfortunately the hiring of cheap illegal labor causes a chain reaction. The contractors who hire cheap, uninsured, non-taxpaying, ILLEGAL aliens undercut the contractors who hire US Citizens or Legal immigrants. Even if the contractor wants to continue to employ US Citizens or Legal tax-paying immigrants, they end up replacing their Legal employees with illegals just to be able to get the jobs.
Let's get the good productive ILLEGAL Aliens into the system and paying federal and state income tax or get them out and not let more in unless they come in as Legal Immigrants. Make them apply for legal visas and or U.S. citizenship and if they don't, then get them out. If they get rejected get them out or give them one quick appeal and if they still get rejected, then get them out.
But let's send the bad ILLEGAL Aliens back to where they came in and let's put a stop to any more ILLEGAL Aliens getting in. When we finally bring back our troops from the Middle East, how about then using them to help better protect our borders from these intruders.

since when did being educated and knowing more than one language become an elitist or bad quality? Knowing more than one language used to be something to brag about, but yet you all make it sound like its the end of the world because some people cant or don't speak the language you think they should, and get mad cause you may have to be a little less lazy and learn some basic phrases to get by? The immigrants i grew up around at least tried to learn enough to get by, most though would not speak it unless they knew there was no other way to communicate what they needed to be said. This was not because they didn't want to conform to what you all think they should, no it was more often than not simply because they were embarrassed of their broken english and didn't want to be made fun of.
Most if not all colleges require you to have taken one to two years of a foreign language before you can be accepted, why not learn spanish? It is the easiest language to learn and since the majority ofour closest neighbors speak some form of spanish it only makes sense.
Im pretty sure freedom of speech would include which language you wish to speak, not just that u have the right to say what you want as long as it is in english.....

I live in a border state and sympathize with the problems Arizona is having. However, I don't see how electing a nasty little man like McCain or an even nastier Tea Party candidate is going to help them with their problem. McCain is too busy posturing, pandering and trying to get even for his humiliating loss to Obama in 2008, to help provide any realistic political solution to the border problems with Mexico. If Arizona and other border states keep electing the type of mouth-breathers who now represent them the violence and drugs will continue to flow. Arizona is cursed by bigotry in its politics and in a large section of the population. What the state needs is political leaders who will try to lift that curse and will also try to work effectively with colleagues from across the aisle to address the border and immigration problem. Here in New Mexico Whites, Hispanics and Native Americans have a tradition of mutual respect and, for the most part, bipartisan cooperation in important matters. Arizonans should try it, they might grow to like it.

Well this is one time I can agree with republicans, what part of the law do you obey? Is it ok to sneak across the border when its against the law? I wish the speed trap machines would go away, I hate paying a ticket for going 7 to 10 miles over the limit, but if I do not pay the fine, or go to court where they will make me pay the fine anyway, I will have my driving priviledges suspended. That's the law, so where does that put me? If I avoided the draft as a kid, I would have had to go to jail, or Canada. If one part of the law can be ignored, why not all parts of the law? Illegal aliens all over the country are getting free social services and they are not being deported. Their children are attending schools and they are not being deported.
They show up in emergency rooms for the most basic of health care choking the hospitals and in some cases causing them to have to shut down from bankruptcy and they are not deported.
Every social service office has a huge sign in both English and Spanish that states they are not allowed to inquire about citizenship.
And the main kicker....
The president of this country has both and illegal aunt AND uncle... not married to each other and living in different areas of the country... who have BOTH been receiving free social services for over twenty years, including free housing and food stamp subsidies, without being deported.

I think I speak for most Conservatives when I say we never questioned the work ethic of any immigrant. I just have a serious problem with someone who enters our country illegally KNOWING they are breaking our law and then asking for the benefits of citizenship including voting rights, entitlement rights, etc.
When someone knowingly BREAKS the law on the very first day they came into our country then their moral character is tarnished. You don't break a law and use the defense it was an unfair law anyway. No, you follow the law.

Yes but don't think for one second that the immigration process has always been the same. Today is not like the 19th century where you get on a boat in Europe, cross the Atlantic, stop at Ellis Island and then you're a citizen. It costs nearly a thousand dollars just to apply for permanent residence. I doubt that's comparable to a 10th class boat ticket in 1856. I'm not interested in paying for illegals to enter and stay in this country. Both parties view the illegals as "bought votes" and both parties want to claim the prize. If you want the illegals here why don't you pay for them privately (find them jobs, feed them, cover their medical and educational expenses privately). The problem that Republicans have is that a very large percentage of hispanics voted for Obama in 2012. So now, the race is on to appeal to hispanics, and it appears that the hot button issue for hispanics is citizenship for illegals, and immigration. Obviously, a lot of people in border states like Arizona don't like this, but it doesn't appear that anyone is listening to them.
We're in a new world. States like Arizona are becoming unofficial provinces of Mexico; the federal government refuses to enforce federal laws, and actually sues Arizona when they try to do so. Al Jazeera is establishing a broadcast network in the US; a US diplomat is murdered at a US diplomatic mission, and no one knows, or seems to care, what happened. We also have an unemployment rate that is stuck at ~8%(historically high) and they want to throw even more people into the mix to compete for fewer jobs. CA didn't become bankrupt by illegal aliens coming in and producing more than they took, it went bankrupt because the illegal aliens have cost the taxpayers billions of dollars to support. Many of us hard working tax payers got sick of supporting this madness and left in droves. This has created a viscious cycle of fewer tax payers and more who are a burden to the state. If Obama and the libs(McCain has never been a true conservative) have their way, the rest of this country will wind up in a similar situation. As long as the "Sugar Daddy in Chief" keeps the money presses rolling, no one seems to care.
