Mark Sanford political ad appeals to 'God of second chances'

Former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford admits making "mistakes," appeals to "God of second changes" in a new TV ad for his congressional run.

Former Gov. Mark Sanford is up with his first TV ad in his bid for South Carolina's 1st congressional district, appealing to voters and a "God of second chances."

"I've experienced how none of us go through life without mistakes. But in their wake we can learn a lot about grace, a God of second chances and be the better for it," Sanford says in the ad.

It's all part of a campaign to rehabilitate his political career after it seemed to end in scandal. When he was governor, Sanford disappeared for days, with staff first saying he was hiking the Appalachian Trail before Sanford himself acknowledged he had in fact gone to Argentina to visit his mistress.

Sanford was married at the time -- and he used taxpayer money to pay for another trip to South America when he visited his lover. He eventually reimbursed the state for the costs.

Sanford is now engaged to the Argentine woman, Maria Belen Chapur.

Sanford is one of 16 Republicans running in the primary to replace now-Sen. Tim Scott. His ex-wife, Jenny Sanford, considered a bid for the seat before deciding not to run.

The district, in South Carolina's Lowcountry, is strongly Republican, and the winner of the GOP primary is likely to end up in Congress.

Still, the race is drawing attention from both sides of the aisle: Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert, is running for the seat as a Democrat.

There is a kind of sadomasochistic quality, to the Republican Party. Yes, it's painful to watch. It's even harder for the "believers". Some of them KNOW they are being "played". However, they feel they MUST vote Republican, regardless of the candidate, because that's God's will!

what a nonsensical generalization. I'm an evangelical/pentecostal pastor who is also libertarian and almost never votes Republican. The Republicans are mostly way too far to the left to ever vote for.

I love these Right Wing Christians. Their religion is something they talk about. It has nothing whatever to do with their behavior. It is primarily used to chastise other people for their behavior.

Really, StateRunMedia? If he had said all chrisians, I'd agree with you. But he didn't. Regarding right wing christians, who typically wear their holier-than-thou delusional superstition on their sleeves, he's spot on.

If Sanford is sincere in his repentance and the voters in SC feel he represents their views, I see nothing wrong with them electing him to the House. If he is not sincere, God will also bring that out into the light of truth.

Non Christians may not comprehend and often seem to relish mocking the forgiving nature of God. But those are the promises of God and Christians and Jews embrace and hope in the God of forgiveness, mercy, and grace.

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts. 1 John 1:9,10

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself Galatians 6:1

“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, For My anger has turned away from him. Hosea 14:4

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.
2 Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.
3 For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night.
4 Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight.
You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.
5 For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
6 But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there.

7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me—now let me rejoice. Psalm 51:1-8

Mark, the boat for 2nd chances sailed a long time ago. I think it left right after your TV confession and while you were turning toward your wife to not ask for forgiveness, but "how did I do?" Selfishness seems to be a GOP birthright and frankly the egocentric view that the world is all about me is long past extinction. We don't need more egocentric people in politics, we need a whole lot less of them there. When a politician places his interests before those of his own family, the interests of the public are NEVER going to be first and foremost in his mind, regardless of how he whines in front of the camera's about second chances and wanting to represent the people of SC.

Is this God of 2nd chances the same one who sends you to Hell with no 2nd chance if you happen to make the wrong decision about which religion is the right one?

Our chances to repent and change can only come while we live. What you are implying is if I'm presented with the reality of my choices and my choices were wrong, I should not be punished, but instead rewarded.

You would not be making a choice from a willing heart but out of a desire to escape the results of the decision(s) you made while living.

Everyone must choose from their own free will. If you have the opportunity and reject the right choice while being told that the results are life or death, who is responsible except yourself?

He should be forgiven but not to the extent that you vote for him to do your will. Trust must be earned. If he really wanted to earn trust he would run for dog catcher and start off at the bottom.

Is this really news? This “God” card is pulled so often by Republicans in trouble or on political life support that we shouldn’t be surprised by Sanford’s use of it to regain prominence. Generally, it’s success is inversely proportional to the smarts of the target electorate. South Carolina? ‘Nuf said. So, lesson to future Republican politicos: wanna schtup some ‘ho and keep your political mojo? Go South young man! You’re guaranteed to win, the deeper you’re in! (Ahem, deep South, that is…)
