Subscribe to RSSRep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., tells NBC News that the 24-year-old woman he tweeted at during the State of the Union address was not a romantic interest, but in fact his daughter.
After “The Hill” reported that Cohen -- who is not married -- deleted tweets saying “ilu,” short for “I love you,” to Victoria Brink, Cohen claimed that nothing was inappropriate and that the woman was a daughter of an old family friend. That old family friend turned out to be an old girlfriend of Cohen’s and Victoria Brink's mother.
Cohen claimed the reason for tweeting Brink, who had not admitted publicly to Cohen being her dad, was genuine excitement.
“When she let me know she was watching the State of the Union address I was thrilled that she wanted Steve Cohen to be part of her. I had such joy, that I couldn’t hold back from tweeting her,” said Cohen.
The congressman would not elaborate on how he only found out three years ago that he had a daughter. He said circumstances led him to search on Google for the mother of his child.
“I googled her mother, found out she had a child and the math looked pretty accurate,” he said. “The mom told me we had a lot of catching up to do.”
Brink's mother then told Cohen, “'Yes every time I look at her I see the German Jew in her face,' I’m Lithuanian close enough.”
Cohen was emphatic that he was “proud to be her dad” and that he “loved her.” Cohen has gotten to know her well and even took her to the White House Christmas party and told NBC News that he’s proud she’s taken an interest in government and was watching the State of the Union.
“I’ve been able to take her on a tour of the Capitol and the White House, I want her to see my world and be a part of it,” he said.

You obviously know nothing about Tennessee. How do you people come up with this rubbish. Southern men do not marry their sisters. It's against the law, dumbo. Marrying a first cousin is frowned upto greatly. I've known second cousins to marry and their children turned out to be fraught with genetic problems along with physical and mental defects. Way back in this nations' history such things as first cousins marrying may have happened because there were few other people around for miles and the transportation was a bit lacking. My aunt married her third cousin and 3 of their children had genetic defects.
Steve Cohen is a man like any other. I've never heard anything about his love life and that's good because he kept it private and never let it interfere with his duties as a congressman.
With young men these days making babies at astronomical rates, I'm surprised there aren't more mental, as well as physical defects among our children.
Maybe the woman did not want to bring this all these years because she didn't want to hinder his career. She's the only one who knows why she didn't. The world has changed a lot over the years; and not for the better.

We need to separate our country and our love for it -- from people who suddenly become bigger than all of us (in their collective mind) when they are chosen to serve as legislators. Even though the majority would deny it, most of us, even if we speak differently, actually think that legislators are smarter/better than we schmucks out here.
Arrogance and airs-of-superiority run wild among our "public servants." "Image" (hair/voice tonality/ability to put on a I-care/I-know/I-understand/I-feel "look" more than any of you lesser beings out there) is everything.
Our form of government does not require this paternalism and manipulation from our servants. There is a negative culture that could be changed if we voters demanded transparancy. We complain loudly, year after year and decade after decade, but we continue to be "played" . . . to be lied to . . . to be treated as if we are stupid or worse, mindless.
There is a solid minority of "public servants" who are not 3-dollar bills . . . who are not egomaniacs . . . who are not so insecure that they must compensate with a false bravado. This minority is rather quiet however, since their political survival demands that they be team players.
Saddest point of all is that while we jump and scream, we accept the status quo and if fact, we see a future that will be just like the present and the past. People, we can do better than this if we choose.
Lucky for her he didn't find out till now. He surely would have had her aborted if he had known back then!
Servant Cohen, should be witnessed in a BANNED Conspiracy Theory episode of Jesse Ventura's, where he stumbles over his words regarding why he signed a bill (which he "didn't know existed") that proves the existence of FEMA camps. I suggest everyone research that episode and realize what "servants" like this have signed us (you and me) on to.
Don't get excited folks. He's as "merry - cheerful - jolly - joyful - blithe - mirthful" as one can get. There's much more to this story that meets the eye. He's been chasing Forrest Gump for many, many years! Why so descreet? Because the 9TH Congressional District that he "represents", in Memphis is Majority African American & right in the heart of the Bible Belt of the South.The Black Church there has been the foundation of his multiple re-elections and they are very outspoken when it comes to the "very cheerful of heart". The truth about the alienation from his daughter comes full circle back to "Happy Feet". There's no shame in who you are, but when your entire political image ends up being is a complete lie, that politician's support just goes away. Prediction: This will be his last run! ...and that's the Unbiased Truth!
Who cares about his pre marital relationships, extra marital affairs or extra marital children? What is his contribution to society? What are his policy work that benefits people?
American politicians, especially in the House, try to pull the heart strings with these stories, or they create publicity and drama through scandals.
How many really work...in intelligent, thoughtful, useful and meaningful ways?

The only embarrassing part of this story is that our elected officials decided that their work time was time to text. If my students did this (if phones were actually allowed in class), the lecture would stop immediately and they would be asked to leave. It is incredibly rude, not to mention that we are paying them to be at work and actually listening.
Basic parliamentary procedure is normally supposed to be observed. That would include common courtesy, such as not interrupting, using your phone, or making noise. Perhaps a course in proper decorum is needed for the sitting elected.
1.You know why political campaigns are negative? Because the public likes it. For proof, just read the ridiculously overwrought comments here. My God -- get a life!
2. The political-party names hurled back and forth ad nauseum in these comments are tedious. Remember when we all learned "I know you are, but what am I?" on the playground? We thought it was SO clever when we were 6. Yeah. Then we grew up and realized it wasn't. This is the same. If that's all you've got to say, the adults in the room just think you need a nap and a graham cracker.
3. "Why didn't the mom tell him he was the father?" Well, gee, there could have been lots of reasons: maybe she didn't know for sure it was his. Maybe she was in a relationship with someone else by the time the baby was born. Maybe she didn't want to deal with somebody she wasn't dating anymore. Are people really that lacking in imagination to not think of this on their own?
4. Lots of people on both sides of the aisle keep it in their pants, and lots of people don't. Just like lots of people in the rest of the population. Know what else? Fire is hot and water is wet. Any more profound observations?
5. The only thing I don't understand in this news story is that he TWEETED instead of TEXTING. If you want to keep your personal business private, you don't send out a tweet, which is the equivalent of a press release. But perhaps he made a mistake and meant to send a text. And none of us have any idea what it's like to, you know, hit the wrong button, or anything, right?

I'm simply happy to see a man take responsibility for his child as soon as he found out about her. Enjoy your daughter and let her be a part of your life.

We are NOT as "free" as most of you sheeple think we are .I personally have not trusted or gov't for decades even thouh i DID serve proudly with the U.S.ARMY.Just simply look back at the american governments history over the past 50 or so years.Corruption has run rampant with no REAL accountability. And which political party that happened to be in power at the time is completely irrelavent.Democrats are JUST AS BAD as republicans. Here are a few examples to think about. The 1960's had the Bay of Pigs fiasco, The ENTIRE U.S. envolvement in Viet Nam,The Kennedy assasination/warren commision report, and what ever else that I am failing to mention about that decade. The 70's had Nixon and the whole Watergate thing which officially coined the term "political cover-up" which is now PERMANENTLY engrained in our political language. Lets not forget the gov't orchastrated so-called "oil shortage" of '73, our involvement and interference in the whole Shah of Iran affiar in '79 which led to the capture of the hostages and the loss of the rescue team. The 80's gave us that Hollywood ham actor Regean Who almost single handedly dismantled our nations mental health care system. The useless SALT I and SALT II Treaties which in the end did NOTHING because BOTH sides were caugt lying about the number of nukes we EACH had . {thats an accronynm for "Strategic Arms Limitation Talks" for all of you uninformed whiney video game/ridlin-prozac/T.V. raised 30-something liberals who were given everything EXCEPT moral values and a good old-fashiond spanking when needed.
