Subscribe to RSSRep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., tells NBC News that the 24-year-old woman he tweeted at during the State of the Union address was not a romantic interest, but in fact his daughter.
After “The Hill” reported that Cohen -- who is not married -- deleted tweets saying “ilu,” short for “I love you,” to Victoria Brink, Cohen claimed that nothing was inappropriate and that the woman was a daughter of an old family friend. That old family friend turned out to be an old girlfriend of Cohen’s and Victoria Brink's mother.
Cohen claimed the reason for tweeting Brink, who had not admitted publicly to Cohen being her dad, was genuine excitement.
“When she let me know she was watching the State of the Union address I was thrilled that she wanted Steve Cohen to be part of her. I had such joy, that I couldn’t hold back from tweeting her,” said Cohen.
The congressman would not elaborate on how he only found out three years ago that he had a daughter. He said circumstances led him to search on Google for the mother of his child.
“I googled her mother, found out she had a child and the math looked pretty accurate,” he said. “The mom told me we had a lot of catching up to do.”
Brink's mother then told Cohen, “'Yes every time I look at her I see the German Jew in her face,' I’m Lithuanian close enough.”
Cohen was emphatic that he was “proud to be her dad” and that he “loved her.” Cohen has gotten to know her well and even took her to the White House Christmas party and told NBC News that he’s proud she’s taken an interest in government and was watching the State of the Union.
“I’ve been able to take her on a tour of the Capitol and the White House, I want her to see my world and be a part of it,” he said.

Interesting story. Glad it doesn't appear to have been a real life event like that of Arnold, or even John Edwards. I wonder why this didn't come out earlier. I guess there was no "juice" in the details to sink claws into. It's also interesting that the mother didn't contact him when she became pregnant.

As one who just found out at age 62 I have 2 half brothers I didn't know existed, it comes as no surprise a man could be a father and not know it. Good on you Steve Cohen for wanting her in your life.

I see nothing wrong with this story. I agree with usedupbrain. Nothing was mentioned about him cheating on a previous wife during his relationship with the girl's mother. Maybe the girl's mother really loved the guy and did not want to interfere with his political lifestyle. Who knows? But it sounds like a happy ending.

I don't disagree with you, but would it not be nice if people in Congress, like Mr. Cohen, left us alone as well?
I think it's GOOD that he now has a relationship with his daughter. Sure it would've been better for him to have been there all along, but life is imperfect. I don't know why he didn't know before, but it's not my problem either. The shame in this story, to the extent there is anything sad about it, is that for 20 or 21 years this woman didn't have her father in her life. To the extent that the media continues to bring us this story I think they should focus on that aspect. With fairly few exceptions having your parents in your life is far better than not.

There are so many stories of young men not knowing they are the father. This was 25 yrs ago...so much for all you lamenting creepy politicians I don't thinmk he was a politician then. Sometimes a couple will break up and the woman won't want to "trap" the man...she doesn't want to be with him (if she does at all) if he only is staying with her to "do the right thing".
He did a search 3 yrs ago and found his ex girlfriend and that is when he found out he had a daughter so no need to make up otherwise..it says so in the article.
Any man who's ever had sex with a woman could be this man. So really, it's not that sleezy if it is as he says. Birth control does fail...often. And so do young couples in employing it. HE is not married. HE was not married when he fathered this girl.

Things posted on the internet aren't private. So those of you who are complaining about an invasion of privacy need to calm down.
Regardless of how this young woman came to be, and whether or not her father was married to someone else at the time, it is good that her biological father is making an effort to be in her life. Part of the problem with this country is that there are too many kids who don't have both parents involved in their life.
Rep. Steve Cohen, you should be ashamed of yourself !!! If this young woman is your daughter, you should never cow down and delete tweets or posts telling her that you love her, just because it may look bad, or because the media might try and blow it out of proportion.
You either love her, or you don't. Be a man and tell your child that you love her, every chance you get to!

I think we were better off with the original crew. What we need to do is vote on the principles or lack therein of these guys and someone needs to get the info out in the public, like the press I guess, which will counteract all the money paid by the special interests of who seems to be driving them. What is there to minimize? He had a child out of wedlock...gasp the horror. Really...seriously...welcome to the real world. That is the case for almost a third of people from that state. Was he married when it happened, did he try to hide it? As far as this story goes it appears that it wasn't the case. There could be many reasons why he didn't know about his daughter. This is a non issue and anyone losing their minds about this need to get themselves a mental checkup.

OK, all you self-righteous types.. since this is no longer 1870, merely having a child out of wedblock is, in and of itself, no longer considered to be immoral. Heck, even the Christian Bible doesn't clearly state that having kids out of wedlock is a sin.. cheating on your spouse is, but Christian doctrine is silent on conceiving a child out of marriage if the child if infidelity is not involved, and even then there are exceptions if the spouse gives permission. Abraham had at least one out of wedlock son by consent and Jacob had more than one. The whole illegitimacy-is-bad thing was an invention of the early modern era, and had more to do with protecting inheritance rights (and, in some cases, keeping slave offspring enslaved) than anything else.
Now, having a child, knowing about it, and eschewing all responsibility would be immoral, but it doesn't look like that was the case here. The Congressman apparently didn't know about the daughter, and when he learned about her, stepped up. It sounds like he's doing all the right things.
...Proving, once again, that a Democrat that feels the need to screw will find a woman instead of trying to screw everyone who isn't rich like a Republican.... ;-)
While I really don't see the big deal. It didn't appear he was married at the time, etc. so no problem. But what makes me laugh is people like Seang and MJ to start attacking the other party. I don't see anything wrong with this story. If it was "uncovered" by Faux news, then it would have been blown all out of proportion. This would have ended up being the sex scandal of the decade. As it is, the usual hypocrites piss and moan about it for a few days and all is forgotten.

He was TWEETING, not texting. It was a publicly available message, a TWEET. He was in attendance for the SOTUS and probably was provided the text of the speech hours ahead of time. He didn't yell at the President like Joe Wilson or LIE like Sam Alito. Respect is a two way street.

Elk, first, this is a non story. Second, if you watched the SOTU you would have seen multiple representatives texting, tweeting, or other wise distracted. It was happening from both parties so please stop this silly non-issue.

Can you think of an example of a Republican who got someone pregnant without cheating on a spouse, then worked to build a relationship with the offspring they never knew they had? Seems like that would really help soften the image and make them seem a little more endearing of real family values. The only examples I can think of are things like an avowed pro-lifer telling his mistress to get an abortion, Scott DesJarlais, or people keeping their illegitimate kids under wraps as much as possible or outright denying that they're theirs.

Messa. It happens all the time. He likely had a relationship with the girl's mother years ago and they broke up the relationship and the woman found out later she was pregnant. For whatever reason, she kept it from him all these years. Maybe she was afraid he would reject his daughter. That he has acknowledged his daughter and wants a relationship with her is wonderful.

I was 48 years old when I found out that my sisters' father was not my father. I did some investigating and with the help of a friend, I found my real father. He was 70 when I met him and he was wondering if he would ever meet me again. He said my mother used to bring me by his house when I was an infant. He had pictures of me as I was growing up. For 6 months after meeting him I couldn't tell this story without bursting into tears. They were tears of joy and anger at my mother for keeping it a secret my whole life. She even denied it when I confronted her about it. I know the joy the Congressman is feeling and I know the pain of being deceived. The picture is of me, my father and my 3 dogs. I speak to him every day. We are so much alike.
That is really awesome, Waste of money! I know several people who learned of an out-of-wedlock child late in life and for most it turned out wonderfully. Good for both of you!

Like at school a mother brings in their child Peter Lock but her name is Trina Burrell. Everyone having the same name cuts down on odd looks or nosy questions.

I thought babies could only pop up from the baby planet, after a mommy & daddy took vows - gee - let's put that song on the radio - "the wheels on the bus go round & round, round & round, etc." before daddy has a heart attack - PS the kid in that commercial - if the incident was real - would grow up to be a real crack-pot having parents like that - SEX exists - ZOUNDS! Got to hide my face under my pillow!) That's why middle class people take crack & cocaine! (so uptight it's got to come out somewhere -)
Being a mother of a daughter born when I was seventeen and forced to relinquish to adoption, I admire this mad who has reunited with her and is making her a part of his life! Many others think it's wrong but put yourself in his shoes. He is her father, she is his daughter ... they have a right to a life together. Kudos for being her daddy! Blessings on your relationship. PS ... I have reunited with my daughter, it took years to locate her through birth records, etc. but it has happened and I love her so very much!

You are so fortunate. My mother, born in 1919, did not track down her birth mother until after her birth mother died. This type of thing has been going on since time began. It is wonderful to see love triumph.
And Now-the rest of the story-this "daughter" was a hooker that was paid alot to lie. He has no daughter. He got caught and now, is saving his job. Of course I have no proof of this, but so what? Republicans had no proof Obama was not born in the US either. That didn't stop them. So, let's play be their rules and make stuff up.

Congressman Cohen is not married. Please don't tell me that you believe sex before marriage is a cause for censure. In the congressman's district that just won't fly. He represents a very progressive district. His constituents love and respect him. They will applaud his fatherhood.

Google is your friend. Just look up the President's birth certificate. And, by the way, even the republican governor of Hawaii says it's genuine. You may not like him but he most certainly is the legitimate President of the United States of America.

I am glad that he is willing to recognize this young lady as his daughter. I was 57 years old before I found out who my birth-father was, as my mother never told me, nor did she tell him that he had a son. It was not until 12 years ago this month that I first found out who he was, and it was May, 2001 when I first talked to him over the phone. In October, one month after my mother died after a 11 year struggle with Alzheimer's, my wife and I traveled back to Missouri to meet my father and new family face to face for the very first time. It was and still is a wonderful experience. I had a great step-dad who always treated me as his own son, but there was still that empty part of me that needed to know who I was. I give kudos to Rep. Cohen for his willingness to accept this young lady as his daughter.
