Boost the economy and that will take care of jobs. Focusing on job creation without fixing the underlying reasons companies aren't hiring is only going to cost the taxpayer more money we can't repay. Handouts solve nothing.

Reduce taxes on corporations so it's more cost effective to keep jobs here than send them abroad. Create barriers to incoming merchandise produced by countries with lower wage scales and fewer environmental regulations.

Why is it that whenever Obama speaks he is always suggesting an increase in spending? Gov. funded preschool? Really? Why in the heck do we need preschool and why does the gov. need to pay for that? When minimum wage goes up, so does the price of goods and services...but so does unemployment among low skilled, or no skilled, workers (if their labor doesn't justify their hiring, they will not be hired)...especially the young and minorities. If we could legislate our way to prosperity why not raise the min wage to $100 and hour? $1000 an hour? Because we run into reality...that it would cost so much to do anything, the economy would collapse. Logically, any incrimental raise in the "minimum wage" bears an incrimental effect of that extreme. People are too economically ignorant to know wages do not fall to 1 cent an hour when their is no govt dictate on wage levels. In fact, before the minimum wage laws we saw some of fastest rates of growth in wages in this country. The same is true of the pre-union era. As unions have fallen to modern historic lows in terms of percentage of the total workforce (they are about 12% of the total workforce now) total real compensation has risen overall (from their membership peak in the 1930s to the present we've seen a 5 fold rise in total real compensation on net per working hour)...a correlation the unions never want anyone to notice.

But why let facts like history and economics come into govt? It's poliitcally great to raise minimum wage because most people are economic morons. They want to vote themselves free stuff, but want someone else to pay for it. But that creates deficit and debt because everyone asks for freebies, including the rich, but no one ever wants to pay..."market failure" in a sense (individually rational pursuits leading to collectively irrational results). Hence, all govts collapse eventually. Ours will too. It won't be pretty, but it's as predictable as oxygen going into your lungs when you inhale and carbon dioxide going out when you exhale.

Chris Dorner is EXACTLY what is wrong with giving people mass ammunition and automatic guns. Since you agree with what he is doing, perhaps you ought to write the LAPD a note and let them know that you believe in lots of clips and guns for those that are NOT officers.

The President holds all the chips in his hands. He is in a better negotiating position on most issues. So, it's even more important the President should use his grace and charm offense to win over Republicans.

The President has no more elections to win for himself...so his position is strong. Yes, the prices of goods and services go up, but so does economic growth via the added demand caused by increased income. That creates jobs, causing a similar "multiplier" effect. Business lobbies would easily shoot down a $100 hour minimum wage; an easier method of increasing the minimum wage in tandem with economic growth. You only observe the price effects of the minimum wage without observing the positive stimulus that it can provide via boosting income of low-income workers (and thus consumption as a whole).

And before we had the minimum wage, we had poor workers and their children laboring in industrial sweatshops for just pennies on the hour while factory bosses made a killing. Wages grew, but that was in part because more people were relying on wages instead of farming. In addition, before unions we had kids sweating in the coal mines, wages set by the whims of the owners and NOT the market (the market is not necessarily good with regulating itself), and people working to their deaths with the elderly survivors envying those who had died young. If total compensation has gone up by 400% (or 5 fold), the VAST MAJORITY of it went to the hedge fund managers and derivative managers of the world who create nothing while raking in huge profits that eventually destabilize the markets via speculative bubbles. It also went to wealthy investors and CEOs who profited from a lack of opposition from labor. The top 20% of the population got most of the pie while everyone else got nothing but the crust, just like our great-grandfathers before the era of unions and before the Great Depression. They don't call it the Gilded Age for nothing.

The minimum wage is not a "freebie;" it's pragmatic economic policy. More money going into the hands of workers equals more money spent for consumer and capital goods; that increases demand and thus corporate profits when they fill that demand, and in some cases more job creation and more demand. It's like a stimulus; spending money in a recession boosts economic growth via increasing demand, which increases consumption and thus profit. The main freebie people seem to be asking nowadays (particularly by those on the right) is lower taxes, which is promised to "unleash the private sector" and "revitalize our economy," except that it never happens and we always fall into a deficit because of that stupid tax cut (Reagan tax cuts, Bush tax cuts, both didn't end well). Instead, we as Americans ought to be willing to pay higher taxes so that we can fund a government that can moderate the volatility of the free market and harmonize the individual/collective-market interactions that occur in a capitalist nation. After all, who else is going to regulate the economy? The market?? Oh please; the market had its chance in the Reagan Era, and all we got was the transition into a debtor nation and heightening economic stratification (and thus social tensions).

Both President Obama and a top economic adviser have confirmed that Medicare, the federal program that underwrites the cost of health care for more than 50 million elderly and disabled people in the United States, is a prime target in the budget-cutting negotiations now going on behind the scenes in Washington.

While talks continue on social program cuts that will affect tens of millions and ultimately the majority of the American people, public attention is being diverted to a series of secondary issues, such as prospective gun legislation. There was, for example, enormous media attention given to a photograph of Obama shooting skeet with a shotgun at Camp David, including a protracted debate over when the photograph was taken and whether the president could be said to be a hunter.

The real business of the Democrats and Republicans, however, is laid out in the Saturday radio addresses by Obama and a spokeswoman for the congressional Republicans, both of them calling for substantial cuts in domestic social spending.

Obama’s address repeated his empty claims of an economic recovery. He failed to note the radical divergence between the boom in business profits, stock prices and corporate CEO pay and the disastrous state of the job market, with workers’ wages and benefits continuing to decline.

Obama then turned to the question of the deficit, with his usual mixture of doubletalk and demagogy, declaring, “We all agree that it’s critical to cut unnecessary spending. But we can’t just cut our way to prosperity.”

In a passage from the brief address that was not quoted in media accounts, Obama continued, “Already, Republicans and Democrats have worked together to reduce our deficits by $2.5 trillion. That’s a good start. But to get the rest of the way, we need a balanced set of reforms. For example, we need to lower the cost of health care in programs like Medicare that are the biggest drivers of our deficit, without just passing the burden off to seniors.”

The last phrase is typical of Obama speechmaking, and of all the declarations by big business politicians in Washington. First, you signal to your corporate masters what you plan to do, i.e., make drastic cuts in Medicare. Then you reassure the victims of this policy that they aren’t really the target…

About .026% or less of gun owners kill anyone with a gun. That means 99.974% or more do not. That's legal or illegal gun ownership, BTW. Since there is no correlation between total guns in our society, guns per capita (gun ownership rates), total permits to carry guns, per capita permits to carry, total high capacity magazines, per capita high capacity magazines, total "assault" rifles, per capita "assault" rifles, and violent crime rates and murder rates, THERE CAN BE NO CAUSATION.

Oh, and mass murder rate hit their peak in 1929. There is no proof they are on the rise at all. Media coverage does not equate to more incidents per capita. In fact there is proof they are currently falling off a spike that occured a few years ago. They have no real pattern, so it goes up and down pretty randomly...and it's such a rare thing that any small increase or decrease is significant to the rate. Many studies that have claimed there has been such a rise in mass murder incidents and/or victims per capita (rate) have been debunked as having flawed methodology.

A so-called "sequestration" of $85 billion out of a budget (?) of $4 trillion! And, the sad fact is that there are really not going to be any cuts. There has never been any cuts. The politicians and media have duped the people by changing the language, in other words, lying to the people. Every time a politician talks about cutting spending, what the are really talking about is just not spending as much as they had planned to spend. So, if they plan to increase spending by 10% next year, they wring their hands, put on a grimacing face and talk about the sacrifices made to come to an agreement to increase the spending by only 9.6%. Then they have the galls to proclaim that they've CUT SPENDING!

This tactic is used though out the government and media and it's "we the people" who end up on the short end of the stick. Just read all the comments here. Obama has been getting pretty much everything he wants, yet the left blames the repubs for all the country's ills. The GOP is just plain clueless as to what they are up against. There is no evidence that raising minimum wage raises demand. if you have a chart that shows this then link it...otherwise I won't bother responding to the rest of what you said because your first point was dead wrong. You make claims that are easily debunked surrounding child labor and "pennies per hour"...you are talking about people who fled into cities to escape MORE poverty, longer hours, more unsafe conditions, more child labor, etc. in the agrarian part of the eocnomy? Maybe you need to look "developing economies". We saw some of the largets percentage gains in wages during that period, and work places were not safe compared to today, but were safer than the agrarian jobs they fled. Hence they CHOSE to work in those places...it was the better choice. And since unions have hugely declined, why has work places gotten safer at the same time? It isn't unions...it's technology making us safer. It always has been. Even OSHA had no effect on the rate of decline in worker fatalities.

Again, if that was the case (about min wage), that it raises demand, and it's good for the economy, then why not raise it to $100 an hour, or $1000 an hour? Because you run into the reality you cannot legislate prosoperity or economic growth.

Exactly how long would you have estimated it should take to recover from the recession that followed the mortgage loan crisis and the derivative scandal brought about by the de-regulated banking industry? That crisis shook individual and institutional investors world-wide and along with the corporate scandals that preceded it, left the U.S. looking like it was tanking. It SHOULD have taken many years, 10 or more easily, to recover from a catastrophe like that, yet we have these spinners constantly arguing that Obama has "failed". The same crowd has been booing him since the first day he took office. In reality it's amazing we've seen so much positive movement already. Job growth, a recovering auto industry, a bull stock market, ... A wave of recession like the one that started here in 2007 takes a long time too wash over, but somehow we have managed to do well - don't be sucked in by the spin.

Outsourcing is also contributed to when you do not let in immigrnats at the rate the market demands (which requires open borders except for medical exams and background checks). Quotas arbitrarily set by govt create gaps in the labor market. Since all growing economies need and feed upon low skilled (and no skilled) labor, not just high skilled immigrant labor, we get an incentive to move jobs to the immigrants (outsourcing) when quotas are in place.

There were no quotas under the Founders and Framers. They didn't come until the later 19th century, and that was based on racism against the Chinese. Even then, only the Chinese were limited for decades. Some of the Founders and Framerts were vehemently against immigration and were racist...but they did not see fit to interfere into the labor markets via arbitrary immigration quotas.

Obama talks another big talk but hasnt walked one walk yet, doubt anything he says is true.

Compare that with the last six months of Bush and you'll find the flavors better then what you drink. Bashing Obama isn't enough unless you have a better plan. Romney never provided one and he lost because of it. Sayng Obama sucks and trust me isn't enough. Most Americans saw marked improvement under Obama's 4 years and Romney's plan sounded like 4 more years of Bush. Time for the GOP to think up a real plan themselves.

Obama isn't really talking about "smarter" government.

He's talking about "austerity", just like the Republicans. Cutting federal spending, just like Europe has been doing for the last 5-6 years with disastrous consequences for every one but the rich. Their average unemployment rate is 12% with some countries as high as 25% (Depression not recession)

Rather than cut Medicare, Social Security, etc. we should raise taxes on the rich and corporations and in other ways.

Romney proposed 10 times the increased spending of Obama as well as cutting revenue 500 billion a year. Romney proposed 200 billion a year increased military and 50 billion a year or so on a new space program plus lots of smaller programs. The cost of funding preschool for those that don't already attend is probably a rounding error on what Romney proposed spending. Luckily most Americans knew Romney's plan would almost surely collapse our economy. Strange those on the right focus on the smallest expenditures by Obama but seem blind to anything Romney proposed.

Its valuation at over $469 billion is the largest of any company in the world. At one point during the debt-ceiling crisis debates last year the U.S. Treasuries balance fell below Apples! Don’t worry, we just borrowed $2.4 trillion more last August to maintain the biggest debtor nation record in history.

Apple claims responsibility for creating, or supporting, 514,000 jobs in the United States. 304,000 of those jobs are described engineering to manufacturing to transportation. 210,000 jobs are from their applications mobile operating systems. Among indirect jobs counted in the supporting category are jobs conducted by other corporations toward theirs such as FedEx, UPS, Corning and others.

But more importantly are the 230,000 jobs in China. These workers are subjected to long hours, coerced overtime, improperly disposed of hazardous waste, falsified records and harsh working conditions at the plants that build the bulk of iPhones, iPads, Macs and other Apple products. More than half of the factories had violated at least one of the company’s codes of conduct and in some instances violated the law. Last year, two explosions at iPad factories killed four people and injured 77. Apples total overseas presence including contractors is estimated to be over 700,000 jobs.

Seems like this great iconic American company does a significant amount of outsourcing. The company at one point proudly advertised its products as “Made in America”, however as a result of its ongoing outsourcing initiatives almost all of its manufacturing is done abroad. Even Apple insiders have admitted that the flexibility, diligence and industrial skill of foreign workers have so outpaced their American counterparts and that “Made in the USA” is no longer an appropriate slogan for most Apple products.

Apple has also been a pioneer in creating subsidiaries in low-tax places such as Ireland, Luxembourg and the British Virgin Islands. Now why would Apple do that? To cut taxes it pays around the world. According to the New York Times, Apple was among the first tech companies to designate overseas salespeople in high-tax countries in a manner that allowed the company to sell on behalf of low-tax subsidiaries on other continents, sidestepping income taxes. Apple was a pioneer of an accounting technique known as the "Double Irish With a Dutch Sandwich," which reduces taxes by routing profits through Irish subsidiaries and the Netherlands and then to the Caribbean.

The most significant point in President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night was a passing and euphemistically worded reference to his program of extra-judicial drone assassinations. “Where necessary, through a range of capabilities, we will continue to take direct action against those terrorists who pose the gravest threat to Americans,” he declared.

Every congressman, senator, cabinet member, Supreme Court justice and general in the House chamber knew that with that statement Obama was defending his asserted power to secretly order the assassination of anyone in any part of the world, including American citizens. The president went on to make clear he was intent on making state murder a permanent and completely institutionalized government function.

His administration, he said, had worked “tirelessly to forge a durable legal and policy framework” to guide such operations. He went on to indicate he might be open to suggestions for giving the assassination program a fig leaf of “transparency” and legality, pledging to “engage with Congress to ensure… our targeting, detention and prosecution of terrorists remains consistent with our laws and system of checks and balances…”

That such a statement could be made before a joint session of Congress, to the general approbation of those in attendance, underscores the crucial aspect of the real state of the American union that received no mention in Obama’s address or any of the media commentary—the catastrophic state of American democracy.

The speech came just over a week after the publication of an administration’s white paper laying out a pseudo-legal justification for Obama’s claim to the power, unchecked by judicial or congressional oversight, to order the assassination of American citizens. This assertion, already acted on in the drone missile murder of three Americans, abrogates democratic principles that go back hundreds of years and renders the Bill of Rights and its guarantee of due process a dead letter.

The US government now claims the type of unchecked powers previously associated with fascist regimes and military juntas. The white paper follows the enactment of military funding bills that sanction indefinite military detention of accused terrorists and their alleged supporters, including US citizens.

Tuesday’s State of the Union address will soon be followed by Congress’ stamp of approval on this sweeping assault on democratic rights, with the Senate’s confirmation of Obama’s pick to head the Central Intelligence Agency, John Brennan, currently the chief White House counterterrorism adviser and overseer of the administration’s drone assassination program…

To have a national health care plan, it should benefit all involved. It doesn't. The freeloaders will not have to pay for health insurance if they don't have a job. Those that have to work two and three jobs (a niece of mine works three jobs - all part time, with NO benefits) will have to cough up enough to get insurance. If they work 30 hours or more, the company will have to get them insurance - so, the companies are cutting employees' hours to 29! The problem has always been the freeloaders, not the struggling workers. The illegals won't have to pay if they aren't working. The average, hard - working American is getting S#!T ON! We had road work done in our city, but it was done by a company in another state! How does that help our city? Another city in our state got stimulus money, and built a BICYCLE TRAIL! There just isn't a lot of honest folks left in Washington. Or anywhere else, for that matter.

While I don't condone these working conditions, there is an interesting reality here. These people are HAPPY they have their job. They aren't complaining. What's more, for workers in general, even those with "good" jobs, week-ends do not exist by default. People are thankful for employment and work when they are needed. And if they are paid for 5 days but work 6, even 7 days, they don't demand more money. They simply do what is required. And are thankful they have a job they can go to, even on Saturday with no additional pay.

I live and work in China and I see this first hand. I'm a well-educated professional and work with and and around others like me, from foreigners (ex-pats) to Chinese locals. The Chinese are the hardest working people I see (but EVERYONE does their job regardless of where they are from).

An irony is that many jobs are done by Chinese here at much lower pay than the equivalent job in the U.S., but I make much more money here than I did in the States. The world is a funny place.

When Oblabla was being sworn in, I listened closely to what he said, which included, "I Barrak Obama, do solemly swear to UPHOLD, PRESERVE and PROTECT the CONSTITUTION of the United States of America. Our Constitution states that ALL citizens of the United States are entitled to a fair and speedy trial. That ONE thing alone should be cause to IMPEACH this man! Our laws also say that any person illegally entering the United States, is to be deported immediately, unless they commit a crime, whereas they will serve the time sentenced, THEN BE DEPORTED. Another reason for IMPEACHMENT! Telling citizens they can't have certain styles of hunting rifles, that they can only be what the GOVERNMENT approves, is still a third reason for IMPEACHMENT! This man has done little for the US, spending most of his time campaigning - even after he won, giving flowery speeches, basically telling citizens, "stay with me, and I'll give you stuff". I just didn't realize we had so many gullible, entitled people in the US!

I actually had no intention of listening to this speach at all. I went to sleep. I knew the content before it began. The same blabber we have heard for 5 SOTU speaches. I woke diring the speach and heard him say he had a plan to get things going and it wouldn't cost " one dime". Then he began to list those things in his plan. I listened to the first three and then muted the TV and went back to sleep. Just those first three proposals meant several billion in additional spending. I am not sure who Obama's math teacher was but he/she didn't teach him how to add and subtract very well.

I assume the rest of the speach was as filled with fancy doubletalk and BS but no solutions just as every other speach this man has given. A quick pragmatist statement on raising the federal minimum wage- What do you think will happen to the box of cereal when the minimum wage worker in the cereal plant gets a raise, the grocery store stocker gets a raise, the checkout clerk gets a raise, and the kid pulling in the carts gets a raise? Think about it...... the price will go up to cover the additional costs. So you will pay more for the items you need because the workers must be payed more by law. But that takes more money out of my pocket and I make minimum wage, I should have more money??? Reality shows that raising the minium wage doesn't work well, it forces a few things- The cost of minimum skill jobs go up, so the charges to the customer must be raised or the business must choose to hire less workers to maintain their bottom line(that's less workers). If you now have raised the bar on wages then you have to realize that society will adjust accordingly to the new load on business and the additional income won't go far. Lastly, minimum wage jobs are there as starter, minimum skill jobs. They aren't there for your lifestyle, they are the basis to build a resume and skills so that you can move on to the next, higher paying job. It's your choice to stop at bagger and not try build skills and show your boss that you can be the next asst. manager, etc.

Don't you remember the Democrat-Republican love fests that stopped circa 2009? Don't you remember the peace and love festivals between the two parties? The times that we gathered around to sing "Kumbaya" together and acted as a unified America where Democrats and Republicans loved each other, only provided constructive criticism and were completely unified as a country? The time when an independent could voice an opinion and not get called a commie pinko or a right wing nutjob at the same time by the two other parties?

This president had nothing else to say. He is a Community Organizer in Chief. Never worked ONE DAY in his entire life in the private sector so has no idea how a business even works. Obama would know an Income Statement from an Immigration statement. But yet still believes, even after four failed years, that the problem all along is that government was too small and businesses took advantage of the working people. So let's look at the Obama "success":

1) The unemployment is HIGHER today than when he took office in January 2009

2) Obama is now the proud title holder of the WORST economic recovery is U.S. history (and currently going double-down on that failed policy)

3) Those on Food Stamps (aka "SNAP") have increased nearly 50% since Obama took office

4) We have the highest percent of the population on Welfare since the 70's

5) We have the lowest labor participation rate in nearly 50 years

6) We have the highest percent of the population unemployed 6 months or more since the Great Depression

7) After borrowing and spending an additional nearly $6 Trillion over the last 4 years we STILL can't get even positive GDP growth in the 4th quarter of 2012 (now appears we are entering another recession - although anybody with the IQ at least 10 points above a turnip understand we never LEFT the recession of 2007-2008).

This president has been a failure. I know that liberals hate Capitalism. I know liberals do not believe in EARNING a living - they believe they are entitled. I know liberals have no idea how a business works. I know liberals have no idea how an economy works.

But what is clear is liberals hate success. Liberals hate businesses. Liberals hate a person making a profit. That's fine, certainly flawed logic but if that is what you believe then that is what you believe.

But don't be surprised that after 4 years of punishing and attacking businesses by increasing taxes, massive new regulations, and additional costs due to ObamaCare that they have decided it is not in their best interest to open or expand their businesses thus causing less employees to be needed and leading to current and further layoffs.

Hate businesses all you want but don't be surprised why this economy just isn't recovering. When you punish businesses you punish the very people you are trying to help (lower to middle class). But THAT is what you voted for and THAT is what you get.

2) So when Obama called Republicans the "enemy" was that unity? And the ironic part is he won't call Muslim extremists the "enemy" but calls fellow U.S. citizens "enemy"

3) So when Obama said "at some point you have made enough money" is that unity?

4) So when Boehner gave in to tax rate increases and said to Obama what do the Republicans get in return and Obama said "nothing, I get that for free" was that unity?

5) So when Obama wouldn't even let Republicans IN THE ROOM when ObamaCare was being written was that unity?

This president has been the most devisive president in U.S. history. He doesn't even PRETEND to be working with the Republicans on compromise. Obama "demands" and expects the Republicans to "cave" (which unfortunately they have quite a bit). But that is over. Obama gets nothing else without discussion and compromise. When Obama acts like a narcissist he will be treated like a narcissist.

I find it hilarious that people like PigBev sit there and whine that people are using Hannity talking points all while watching Chris Mathews....For such staunch liberals you sure watch A LOT of conservative TV....

@ kaybee - Obama has absolutely divided the country. As a fiscal conservative, I couldn't bear to watch his speech last night due to his ideas he claims will help the country. Honestly, it only showed his continued lack of understanding (or total disregard for responsible governing) of what it will take to get us back on track. Each day we delay is another nail in the coffin, and helps make the task even more difficult. Yes, this day has been several decades coming, but his refusal to ACCURATELY acknowledge, identify, and begin the process is totally wrong and irresponsible. Blaming Bush is a cop-out, and quite frankly a lie. Revisionist history is much more effective if pursued AFTER everyone from that era has died, not before.

Additionally, I'm incredibly offended he would give such a speech as last night, it was no better than a spiel from a snake oil salesman.

The looney Tea Baggers and right-wing nuts on here are actually doing Obama a big favor and I'm sure he realizes it.

They provide the political cover he needs for his mostly right wing policies when they froth at the mouth and scream: "tax and spend liberal" and "European Socialist" at him. That last one is particularly absurd. Haven't they read the news about Europe lately?

The leaders there (many times "Socialists") have been slashing government spending including social spending (just like the "free-market" capitalists saying we should do) which has resulted of course in their economies crashing. Unemployment in the Eurozone is 12% and in some countries, like Spain, it's 25%.

Obama's policies have mostly been a continuation of the Bush regime. He continued and intensified the bailout of Wall Street (it started under Bush), made sure no bankers went to jail after they swindled the economy off of a cliff and his foreign policy has been mostly a continuation of Bush's, too: No prosecution for Bush era war crimes like torture, kidnapping, illegal detention etc. and aggressive maintenance of empire, with a bloody "surge" in afghanistan and support or actual participation in interventions in Libya and Syria.

The right wing nuts help keep Obama's base in line and loyal to him even though he has betrayed them through-out his presidency.

His base looks at the wing Right wing ranters and says "if those are the people who don't like him, he must be alright".

Both conservatives and the progressives are equally unhinged in their own ways.
