President Barack Obama returns to the White House in Washington on February 4, 2013.
President Barack Obama on Tuesday will propose that Congress pass a small package of spending cuts and tax reforms to put off the "harmful consequences'' of huge automatic spending cuts known as the "sequester'' for a few months, a White House official said.
"Uncertainty around the sequester is already having a negative impact on our economic growth, and if it was to take effect it would cost hundreds of thousands of American jobs and have devastating impacts on our economy,'' the official said.
The small budget package would "allow Congress more time to reach a solution that permanently avoids the sequester and significantly reduces the deficit in a balanced way,'' the official said.
Obama will speak at 1:15 p.m. EST.

Best of luck dealing with the obstructionist Mr. President you will need it.
Cut 10 % across the board on all federal spending. We have to start somewhere and it is fair & balanced.
Fair and balanced...where have I heard that before?
John you heard that from Reagan many years ago and not from this president or congress... The more the cuts are pushed down the road the more the Citizens of the US suffer................
There goes the can again.
John,
Isn't it time you stopped drinking the koolaide and started demanding meaningful action from the president? In my opinion it is the Democrats and the president that is being obstructionist in this battle. You cannot go on spending like there is no tomorrow when all the money is borrowed! Social programs make up over 60% of federal spending and defense has already seen over 500 billion in cuts with more in the pipeline to come. It is time other programs were cleaned up, cut back, or outright canceled so that the waste and fraud gets reduced.
President Barack Obama on Tuesday will propose that Congress pass a small package of spending cuts and tax reforms to put off the "harmful consequences'' of huge automatic spending cuts known as the "sequester'' for a few months, a White House official said
And then another few months and then another few months. Where have I seen this before? When is the senseless spending going to stop? This reminds me of the pig feces study we got to fund for China...because that necessary spending! PFT
And then they'll do another one and another one...they had years to deal with this.
Until the pain is allowed to happen, they won't solve anything.
We need a French Revolution.
Maybe they should start with trying to keep our industry in the U.S. We do need more jobs and people cannot find work if there are no jobs available. Also, stop giving money to our enemies. I doubt it is making our enemies like us just because we are supposedly helping them. And, if necessary, stop having an "open door" policy -- where anybody can come over to this country and live with free healthcare, food stamps, help from social services, etc. Somebody is paying for all the goodies these immigrants are receiving, and I have a feeling it is the taxpayers.
The President needs to exert some leadership, bring both parties together and hammer out a deal, not just keep pushing this down the road. My fear is the President is not concerned about these issues, but rather with this gun control and immigration reform. The only reason this is bring brought to the forefront is because of the economic problems creeping up. He sees that as clouding his real agenda and that's gun control and immigration reform.
Now don't get me wrong, these issues need to be addressed, however, the economy is still the biggest problem and our President has not acted on it since his election.
Well, but don't they know, that's exactly what Republicans' goal is, to continue to devastate our Economic Recovery so they can blame President Obama.
Cutting government spending in a time of high unemployment is a recipe for higher unemployment and higher costs to government and business associated with the unemployed such as unemployment compensation, higher food stamp costs, higher bad debt and mortgage defaults, lower sales, and lower tax revenues.
Higher growth rates will pay dividends in the form of higher tax revenues, higher sales, lower unemployment, lower costs due to unemployment.
Government spending cuts are accomplished only by terminating government workers and soldiers. In a time of high unemployment, their likelihood of finding another job quickly is slim to none.
Let's get this economy going. That is job #1.
"Short term resolution" backed by NO National Budget for FOUR YEARS.
Yep, that will work.
It is the "Republicans fault" since "Bush's fault" is out the window.
If it is some budget line garbage then we all know it will have nothing to do with actual CUTS.
But I am sure a budget is forth coming just as quickly as possible......
Breese...as in hot air? 10% across the board would cause as much harm as letting the sequester happen!! It's more complex than your simplistic solution!!
How about passing a budget Mr. Obama. That would be a start.
Don't cave in to these Tea party cut cut obsessives, Obama! If you give in to them, they will only be back to extort more. They are just bullies and should not be catered to. The "crisis" they scream about is a big lie. Why do I say that? When the big banks want money, they are more than happy to hand over a trillion. They always happily give the rich their handouts. They can't be that broke. They have money for wars when they want them. They can't be that broke. If we were sincerely broke, we'd get out of the middle east now. If they only scream about being broke when it comes to the old and the poor, then it is a lie.
Stop all of these "temporary" measures. This country's economics are in shambles. It has built up over many years under many congresses and many presidents. Obama has made it even worst by operating the government without a budget and his free-wheeling spending during the past 4 years, with no end in sight. What this country really needs is a Balanced Budget Amendment to the US Constitution. Only through the Constitution will the elected officials of this country get serious about balancing revenues with expenditures. Unfortunately, we no longer hear of such an amendment spoken in Congress. Instead we hear the 2 parties blaming each other for not caving into the others wants. It's time for the citizens of this country to put aside their party affiliations and stand together to demand a balanced budget amendment.
Yet libs will just keep giving him more and more tries because if you dont, you're a racist. The gubnet will give you guys your welfare checks or any other entitlement you think you have earned, so you're all for it. Just have your kids pay for everything you want. This is somehow moralistic I guess.

President Obama has exerted leadership, which the GOP treats like they're "Lucy", the President is "Charlie Brown", and our Economic Recovery is the Football.
As for the rest of your post, when you take a listen to the words that are coming out of the President's mouth, that's when you learn what's on his mind and where his concerns are, which is probably very different than Republican "leadership" who say one thing just to distract you from what they're really up to.

It's Obamas fault
It's the republican congresses fault.
back and forth, back and forth. Blame the other guy, and pretend your side has done nothing wrong. That's what our government has become. It's all about who we can blame for the failures. Not solving the problems.
If you think it's just congress, or just Obama, you're delusional, and part of the problem.
Just another scheme to delay working on the problem.. delay delay delay....
@ American girl, I have zero faith with both parties, for the record.
Finger pointing only shows your not very smart, sorry but it's true.
Spending funds which we pay 46 cents on each dollar borrowed is DUMB.
Your comment reflects it would accept owning a charge card with interest
locked and set at 46%. Your I Q must be a single number. ( Sad but true ).
Let mommy explain how a smart person stops wasting money on interest pymts.
To get those numbers you have to include social security and medicare both separately funded. The military takes over half of all federal income tax revenue. Funny right wingers accused Obama of cooking the books by including reduced spending by the military due to the drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan yet use the same numbers to justify stopping any future cuts. Military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan were funded by Bush off the books and above the normal military budget. Ending those expenses doesn't cut money from normal military programs. There are hundreds of pork projects that congress fights for not wanted or needed by the military solely because they create jobs in their districts. Time we cut the pork and prioritize funding for what the military really needs.
American Girl, the leadership Obama has shown will lead this country over the cliff.
Obama promised to cut the annual deficit in half by the end of his first term and never even made the attempt. This country is hemorrhaging money, and the bleeding has to stop. As if buying some more time is what is needed, they will still just end up waiting until the last minute and plugging the hole with another stop gap measure. Even Obama has missed his deadline for delivering a budget to Congress this year. Sorry but the games have to end. The sequester is a far better option then allowing Washington to continue delaying doing their job while the country is in a financial free fall.
the community-organizer-n-chief just can't help himself...spend, spend, spend...tax, tax, tax
Sheeeesh!

It's time to get glasses, wasted spending is what BARACK OBAMA has accomplished
during his destruction of our economy. ( even funding terrorist ; Muslim Brotherhood )
Wake up , look around , understand it's America at risk not one party or the other.
See the problem as it is shown to you, stop believing the presidents cra(p) talk. (he's a LIAR )
lol What joke I am so amazed at how poorly our government functions and yet they want to tell us how to live our lives. What a shameful bunch of people they are.
In a time of high unemployment, business is reluctant to invest because their sales growth is so mediocre. This surplus of investment capital can be borrowed by the government and used to stimulate growth and provide a cushion for the unemployed.
Higher growth will reduce unemployment. Cutting government spending increases unemployment and could lead to another recession which would put many struggling businesses out of business forever.
Delaying spending cuts until the economy is growing faster and unemployment is way down makes a lot of sense. Adding 3% to the economy's growth rate will lead to a 3% bigger economy every year for years to come. A 3 % higher growth rate this year adds the equivalent of 30% more government and business revenues over the next ten years > (current economy + 3%) x 10 years = 30% of this year's revenues.
What a foolish person this President is.
And you super foolish ones voted for him twice.
Another four years of digging a deeper hole.
PATHETIC
Hmmmm...
POTUS obamas most frequent rhetoric after "hope and change" is "fair and balanced". LMAO!
Interesting that sequestration was all about spending cuts. Now obama wants to include reveune? WTF! If he wasn't happy with the 2% paying a higher tax rate at the end of 2012, shouldn't he have mde an effort to have the 98% also pay a higher rate. It has been preached time after time that niether spending cuts or increased taxes rates on the 2% alone will resolve our debt issues.
As for tax reform mr president get the hell out of the way and inspire congress to do their job. Your BS about blaming the right really only shows that you still think like the jr senator from illinios. Even reagan had to deal with a contentious democrat speaker of the house tip O'neil, and tax reform took more than a year to see it pass congress and make it to reagans desk for signiture. Hell, reagan had to get the American people all on the same page, what have you done mr president except to continually poke the right in the eye and imply that you have a mandate. The only mandate you got in 2012 was to get washington working together and to unify our couintry not divide it.
Mr obama, keep it up and your kids will be wondering WTF you were doing for 8 years to fix the American economy and create growth. Adding a myriad of new regulations and continually kicking the can down the road ain't gonna do it!!
Jamie dimon yesterday made a statement about europe and the US. Basically europe had the will to keep it together, but not how to. We know how to but congress and obama don't have the will to
More Blah, blah, blah" from Obama. Hurry up and pass unknown measures that will be announced later, but are sure to punish small business and Oil companies now. Gotta pay for all that money that evaporated on the Presidents Green Energy initiatives while holding on to useless government employees. Oh by the way the Presidents budget is gonna be late. Have to focus on immigration reform for those immigrants here without checking in at the border, after all there were political promises made to LaRaza and the SEIU. So much going on for the President today as he meets with his Labor and minority favorites so that he can tell the afternoon meeting of businessmen how he will be tying their hands in order to pay back even more political favors in some "bypartasian" (wink, wink) effort to scuttle our nations debt even farther.
It is indeed a busy day for the President.
We need the POTUS to man-up and put proposed cuts on the table and end the smoke-and-mirrors. The sooner, the better. No more delays.
rukidding
If you could think in terms of making the economic pie bigger through higher growth, you would be able to see how deficit spending to achieve this bigger pie would actually reduce our budget deficits more in the long run than short-sighted budget cutting now would. Added bonus to higher growth rate is lower unemployment and higher business profits and increased investment and increased tax revenues.

Maran8th8...I think that a good portion of Americans agree with you but this President is not going to deal with the economy when he can keep kicking the can down the road and blaming inaction on Republicans in Congress. It is time to close loopholes in our tax code that would actually increase revenue in addition to that we need to reduce government spending on failed social experimentation that cost our treasury dearly.
What an utterly useless president this country has produced based on the votes of millions of idiots. See folks, this is what this Liar-in-Chief is bringing to you.
Lies, lies, lies and no budget. Now he wants to provide another little band-aid because he is a chicken-@!$%# that does not know what to do after he drove the car into the ditch.

A short-term "fix" to avoid being responsible and following a budget... anyone surprised?
No wonder 70% of Americans know the nation is on the wrong track.
Great work Democrats (sarcasm), hope your "entitlements" were worth throwing away your childrens/grandchildrens futures.
American Girl,
The President initiates the budget which starts the discussion for approval which then goes back to the President for final signature. Don't falsely accuse when the Constitution requires the President to initiate. The Harry Reid Senate will not even bring up actual budget discussions. Hence, the continual kicking of the can down the road year after year, and the President won't reign in Harry Reid to get some work done either. So watch where you point the finger or get educated about what is really transpiring in Washington instead of continually spewing you toxic misinformed rhetoric.
American Girl...so what is it that you particularly like about the Presidents proposal? How do you think it will fit in with his budget? Forget that last part. His budget is due today and he has already said it is just not going to get there. As the CEO of this nation he is a fail.
Sequestration comes as a result of the Budget Control Act of 2011, which was passed be Congress and signed by President Obama on August. 2, 2011. Now about 17 months later, the White House thinks that delaying this a few months will prevent the problem? MSNBC would call this "kicking the can down the road if there was a Republican President.
Many bloggers on this site, like American Girl-724855 like to blame this on Republicans. This was to be prevented by a bipartisan committee, but how can we expect that to occur when the Senate refuses to even consider House legislation? The process for ALL budgetary legislation is that a bill, introduced in the House, is debated and changed if it is deemed necessary by the Senate. A committee made up of members of the House and Senate then negotiate the final bill, which is voted on by both groups. That has not happened since Sen Reid took over the Senate. Get the process to work and the Government will work better.
You know you have to deal with the deficit and debt. I guarantee you 3 years from now, Obama will say something like "Its best that I let our next President deal with these issues because he'll have more time to address them"....same thing each term of Congress does.
These people are not 'leaders'...they are a joke. Leaders would make us take the hard medicine of cuts and spending reductions and realize that we as a country have to live within our means.
Borrowing money is not a solution to economic recovery...it's the same thing as stimulus. Once it stops, everything does.
Lastly, people need to realize that our whole country and it's growth has been based on 16+ trillion of borrowing the last 15+ years.

American girl, how droll. Perhaps you need to remind us all again just where the left was during this time? How about giving us the .gov link that says that the right had the votes to totally reject any reforms or to put down the lefts desire to shout out a warning
Seems rather foolish to take such a partisan view, I wonder what you will say when obama has doubled our national debt by the end of FY 2016. "it was the rights fault for not speaking out, for being as complacent as the left was in the late nineties and after the turn of the century."
-----------------------------------
Spencer-399802...
To think that the POTUS has mastered this premise so well. Who can forget the late night deals of 2009 to get the stimulas, obamacare anjd financial reform shoved through the totally controlled of congress by the democrats? I found it rather interesting that POTUS obama didn't invite the congressional minority leaders to the WH for policy discussions untill mid 2010.
I also was amused at how obama came out and publicly lashed out at the right on their budget proposal after the shellacking that the left got in the 2010 midterms. How diplomatic of him to just trash it out of hand, rather than saying that some common ground existed. Then we all know how obama didn't have the balls to tell the senate to do their share in creating a budget proposal. CR's are such a sure way to bring expenditures in line with revenue, are they not? To bad obama didn't recognize that losing control of the house and losing seats in the senate didn't add up to a mandate by the public to change his ways.
To American Girl, you sated

"The small budget package would "allow Congress more time to reach a solution that permanently avoids the sequester and significantly reduces the deficit in a balanced way,'' the official said."
Mr. President just when is enough in the overspending department? Another $6 trillion? Just when are you going to abandon the tax and unrestricted spending goals you have practiced publicly? Just when are you going to realize spending has to match revenue? Did you sleep through economics or just step out for another joint? It is past time for serious discussion on the subject. Just cause you have yours and continue to line your pockets at the expense of the public does not make it right.
Just when is the Senate going to get serious about matching revenue to spending? Just when is the House going to get serious about matching revenue to spending?
So disgusting and such a tragedy for our future generations. Just what does the leadership of the country think they are teaching the next generation?
Another day of kick the can.
Next
American Girl...first of all, you're an idiot. Secondly, you obviously don't know American history. The Republican-held House HAS PASSED A BUDGET the last 2 yrs. The previous 2 yrs when the Dems held the House, no budget. And the Dem-controlled Senate hasn't passed a budget in 4 yrs. So, if you're going to point the finger, point it at the Dems. Also, Obama's proposed budgets that he did submit were voted DOWN without a single yes vote - even from his own party!!!!
And lastly...
You're exactly right! We see that going on right now....the GOP gave Obama increased tax revenues last month; in turn, the Dems promised spending cuts. And now Obama is coming back asking for more tax increases!!!! He cannot be negotiated with because he WILL NOT HONOR his commitments!!!!

Wrong.
So far all of the policies that took us "over the cliff" belong to Republicans, and Republicans have certainly showed us that they're all too happy to stall our eocnomic recovery for political reasons.
Why should I trust Republicans when they are the ones who caused all the damage in the first place and aren't to anything at all to help the American People recover?
@James-Helluva lot of no's#1.8: Why a French revolution? This is the US. That's a very unamerican thing to say.
Why should I trust Republicans when they are the ones who caused all the damage in the first place and aren't to anything at all to help the American People recover?
Yep, because republicans have been in control for decades and there were no democrats around.
Some of us can accept that this is the fault of both parties, it's ignorant people like you that feed the politicians and enable them to keep screwing the middle class over.
Again the &^%$#@! with a stolen credit card will never cut any entitlement spending.
Were going to see progress. It will be stupid, ugly, and theatrical. A lot like the posts we are reading. But FINALLY, we will see progress.
Won't amount to much but there WILL BE agreements.
Republican leadership is in the tank. I've known and seen these days coming (hoped they would come and happy as a lark). Feels so good to be a winner and continueing to read posts from the right like they STILL do not have a clue.
I LOVE IT!
American Girl,
You need to educate yourself and get out of your little bubble.
The Democrats, under Roosevelt, initiated the welfare incentives that we all call entitlements today. The problem was that Truman and every President since, with the help of a primarily Democratically controlled Congress over a fifty year period, decided to borrow entitlement funds and spend it on additional welfare entitlement projects. Barney Frank finished the gross miss-handling of entitlement funds with Fanny-Ma and Freddi-Mac. Don't blame this massive failure on the Republicans. Get educated on the miss-management of government finances. You might even change parties when you see how the Democrats have raided entitlements funds to gain voter acceptance. It's borderline criminal and you should be outraged instead of sheepishly trying to blame generational financial ruin on the opposition party.
Mr. President I'll give you the short answer: No.
And don't blame the "sequester" for the damage to the economy that is all your doing. Punishing businesses. Pushing through a health care bill that nobody read that will cost $1 Trillion a year when it is all done. Pushing through new regulations that negatively affect businesses.
No, the damage to the economy is all yours. if the Sequester does NOT happen it will have far reaching negative affects.
We must stop spending money we don't have. We must stop adding incredible taxes on both the businesses and consumers.
This economy sucks because of you and stop blaming "greedy" oil companies, insurance companies, wall street executives, speculators, and whatever other nonsense. Quit blaming tsunamis, global warming, same-sex marriage policies, and other nonsense. Quit blaming Republicans, Tea Party, and other nonsense. The only ones left to blame are Sasquatch and the Loch Ness Monster but I expect you will blame them too before your second term is up.
You are the leader of the free world. Now lead. Be a leader. Don't be a whiner. Quit campaigning - you have already been elected. Be a leader. Act like a leader. Act responsibly. Spending is up over a trillion a year since you took office. YOU added the extra spending. YOU are responsible for this massive debt. YOU need to be a responsible leader and return spending to the level it was at before our economy tanked. Go back to 2007 levels. THAT is the solution.
So I ask you once again: Act like a leader and lead.
Here's an idea! Tell him to park Air Force 1 long enough for him to get off and go to his office long enough to put together a reasonable and realistic budget plan and then present it to congress for consideration. After harry brings it up for a vote, then congress should consider kicking the can down the road.
But for now the American public should kick obama's can down the road for shirking his LEGAL duties to present a budget to the American public. Believe it or not, it is not Bush's problem that he hasn't presented a budget for the past four years. He has nobody to blame except himself. And we as Americans should demand more of our leadership.
Nice try. 100% of intelligent people will tell you the housing market, no regulation of the mortgage industry were the cause of the economic collapse.
The Republicans destroyed the US economy? How about you be honest with yourself and everyone else and admit both parties were to blame.
And you can start all the way back to Clinton who loosened the laws on Low Income Housing which made it easy for anyone to buy a home, and at the same time not requiring anyone to watch over the mortgage lenders.
After that, everyone is to blame. The Democrats are just as much - if not more to blame thanks to Clinton - than anyone.
Wrong again American Girl. It's Obama's anti-business policies that are holding businesses from hiring. It's his outlandish spending habits that have added more than $6-trillion in new debt during his first 4 years in office (think about that AG, that's more than 37% of the total 230+years of US debt in only 4 years!). If Obama has his way, we would get more revenue without any cuts in spending. Thank God for the republicans for holding this free-spending moron in check. Could you imagine what our debt would be if not for the republican resistance?
Translation;
Even after 4 full years as President Mr. Obama remains unwilling to bite the bullet and put in place meaningful spending cuts (instead of slight cuts in the rate of increase in spending) for fear of pissing off the handout crowd. Best to punt again, right Mr. Obama? Poor Mr. Obama, he can't bring it upon himself to cut spending.
The following is what Obama said in his previous speeches before Congress. Obviously he didn't mean a word of it, otherwise he would not be submitting budgets to Congress that call for continued massive deficit spending and the creation of a $26 Trillion debt, while punting again and again on meaningful spending cuts and moving towards a balanced budget.
Damyou,
A stick in the eye for what purpose? Are you just that angry and selfish that you pray for total financial destruction? The economy is salvageable along with the debt. Fiscal responsibility and time will bring things back together but there will need to be sacrifices at every level. The middle class will bear the biggest financial sacrifices. It's always that way. Your hate or complaining or finger-pointing will not change the reality of who will bear the most cost.
Stop drinking the kool-aid. You are waisting your time defending another "kick of the can".
ProBusiness
To blame the President for slow growth is absurd. The housing bubble saw home building plunge from 2 million homes per year to less than 500,000 per year when it burst. Fueled by huge profit taking in the mortgage industry (some of it fraudulent), this bursted bubble plunged our economy into recession.
Stimulus spending was tried, but more was needed and thanks to the Tea Party that did not happen. Economic growth in the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2008 reduced our economy by almost 4% in size. The Obama stimulus ended the recession in six months. Growth accelerated to over 3% in 2010, but business was too busy cutting costs to pick up the ball and expand aggressively. Thus, we needed more stimulus in 2011, but the Tea Party cost cutters blocked that.
Business leaders deserve much of the blame for our economic malaise. They reduce their risks while trying to increase their profits. Pay workers more and consumers will have more to spend and growth will accelerate.
Shaak: You are wrong.
The president is DIRECTLY responsible for the slow growth. Consumers and businesses do NOT make decisions on the "past" but rather the future and the expectations. Yes our economy took a punch to the gut in 2008, no doubt about that, but the economy is then a function of future expectations. And when Obama took office the expectations were not good. Obama spent over a year pushing a health care bill rather than putting in place policies of "pro-growth".
If Obama would have said January 2009 "I understand we are in some tough times but I want to give consumers and businesses 'certainty' of the future so here is what I am proposing and promising: No additional EPA regulations, no additional business regulations, current tax rates will be locked in for the next 5 years, and no changes to health care will be pursued and discussed until this economy recovers" you would have seen the fastest and strongest economic recovery in years. And we would not have needed a stimulus (which didn't even work by the way). We would be growing at 4% to 6% GDP and unemployment would be below 5%.
But Obama didn't do that. What he did was EXACTLY what every economics textbook tells you NOT to do. He created uncertainty. He increased taxes. He increased costs of doing business (ObamaCare, regulations, Dodd-Frank, etc.). He did EVERYTHING wrong. And we are paying the price for it today. We have a stagnant economy that never recovered AND appears (and as expected) that the economy is going back into another recession.
This president's policies are EXACTLY the reason we have a failed economic recovery.
Pro Business
In Obama's first four years, no taxes were raised, but were actually cut (2% on first $108,000 for everyone. Your uncertainty is BS. Oil companies continue to expand. Their revenues have increased.
For almost all businesses, the biggest uncertainty is worrying about your future sales. Will they go up or continue going down (for most businesses from 2008 through mid 2009)?
Uncertainty can be not having health insurance and hoping you don't get sick. Uncertainty can be losing your job and not knowing how to pay your mortgage. Uncertainty for a business can be wondering if your customer will pay on his Net 30 terms or go bankrupt on you.
These are far more important uncertainties than the ones you cite. Big business has prospered. The stock market has soared. Obama has taken care of the big things and health care. It's time businessmen who are prospering to pay their workers a fairer share of their profit and expand their hiring. Optimism will produce results if enough do it at the same time.
Shaak: You have no idea what you are talking about.
1) Dodd-Frank bill: Added significant cost to businesses
2) Regulations: Added significant cost to businesses
3) Minimum Wage: Increased January 2009
4) ObamaCare: Threats to increased costs if this cluster$#%$ passed (which it ultimately did)
Uncertainty is the worst thing for a business and Obama added so much uncertainty it actually halted our economy.
And since you believe government spending is the answer here is a link to a UCLA study in 2004 that showed that the policies of FDR actually prolonged the Great Depression by as many as 7 years.
http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla/FDR-s-Policies-Prolonged-Depression-5409.aspx
And Obama's policies were actually modeled after FDR's policies. Is it any wonder that Obama is prolonging the "Great Recession" by 7 years as well?
Pro Business
Maximizing profits is taught in all microeconomic textbooks. However, the aggregate affect of all these individual decisions by businesses to maximize their profit in a time of recession by cutting costs only makes the recession worse.
In a time of high unemployment, failing to hire young workers and training them to meet future growth when you can afford to do so, in the quest to maximize short term profits, in aggregate, will doom our economy to slow growth.
You need to look at macroeconomic effects of business' individual decisions. They do determine what happens to the economy as a whole.
American Girl (Fiesty in disguise) both Demidogs trolls. I believe they are the same person, ever notice how when one is on the other one isn't??? Also there just can't be two such vehement, vile spewing women in this world. I wonder just how much they/she is being paid to come on this site to stir hate and try and start controversy? MSN needs to get a clue that most of us now know them/her for what she/they are....paid propagandist...no more...no less.
You seriously think despite the near total destruction of our economy in the meltdown the ones most at fault shouldn't be held accountable or prevented from the same actions again?
You believe companies paying minimum wage with no benefits are facing too much of a burden? Few would agree. Obamacare is fully funded unlike anything Bush did.
Bush's great recession. Hard to sell that the very policies that created this recession were the cure. Romney's proposals were identical to Bush's. Slash taxes on the rich and spend, spend, spend. Also Romney was a strong supporter of stimulus during a recession chiding republicans in congress for not enacting a stimulus bill immediately rather than waiting for Obama to take office. Your arguments only make sense if republicans had a plan better than Obamas. Spending 100's of billions in new military spending and a space program to create jobs isn't a better solution then spending it on bridges and roads. Had Bush not driven up our debt from 5.7 trillion to 12.1 trillion by never paying for anything including his wars it wouldn't be an issue.
wicked wanda
Delusional thinking is unbecoming of you. You accuse them of spewing hatred and you use the term Demidogs to describe them. You do what you condemn. That is hypocritical.
shaak...understand this too....that 2% was simply 2% less being taken out of your Social Security payments. It was not a Federal Tax break/cut. This year when it was re-assereted it came back as a 2.2 % increase. So all that happened there was less monies going into our hard earned old aged safety net. Pro-Business has handed you your floppy lips back to you on a platter. Might aught zip em up before you futher embarress yourself.
"…There is, as Obama emphasizes, general agreement in ruling circles that such cuts will be made. The only question—about which there is heated debate—is what mechanism to use and how to disguise, as much as possible, the real significance of the measures now being discussed behind closed doors in the US capital…"
White House zeros in on Medicare
4 February 2013
by Patrick Martin
Both President Obama and a top economic adviser have confirmed that Medicare, the federal program that underwrites the cost of health care for more than 50 million elderly and disabled people in the United States, is a prime target in the budget-cutting negotiations now going on behind the scenes in Washington.
While talks continue on social program cuts that will affect tens of millions and ultimately the majority of the American people, public attention is being diverted to a series of secondary issues, such as prospective gun legislation. There was, for example, enormous media attention given to a photograph of Obama shooting skeet with a shotgun at Camp David, including a protracted debate over when the photograph was taken and whether the president could be said to be a hunter.
The real business of the Democrats and Republicans, however, is laid out in the Saturday radio addresses by Obama and a spokeswoman for the congressional Republicans, both of them calling for substantial cuts in domestic social spending…
…In a passage from the brief address that was not quoted in media accounts, Obama continued, “Already, Republicans and Democrats have worked together to reduce our deficits by $2.5 trillion. That’s a good start. But to get the rest of the way, we need a balanced set of reforms. For example, we need to lower the cost of health care in programs like Medicare that are the biggest drivers of our deficit, without just passing the burden off to seniors.”
The last phrase is typical of Obama speechmaking, and of all the declarations by big business politicians in Washington. First, you signal to your corporate masters what you plan to do, i.e., make drastic cuts in Medicare. Then you reassure the victims of this policy that they aren’t really the target.
In truth, that is exactly what the White House and congressional Democrats and Republicans are planning. They will impose the burden of the fiscal deficit on the backs of the most vulnerable sections of the working class: the elderly, the disabled, young people and the poor…
…Neither Sperling nor any other White House spokesman has spelled out exactly what cuts in Medicare are envisioned. But the failed budget agreement of 2011, reached by Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner, gave a glimpse. It called for raising the age of eligibility for Medicare from 65 to 67, which would force millions of retiring workers to pay for private health insurance for those additional years. It also called for increased means testing, a step towards turning Medicare into a welfare program reserved for the poor, like Medicaid, and undermining its universality.
The Washington consensus that entitlement program cuts are unavoidable is justified on the grounds that, as countless big business politicians declare, “There is no money.”
This is the mantra in the richest country on the planet from representatives of a ruling elite that is gorging itself on speculation, profit-gouging and outright swindling. The American financial aristocracy is raking in trillions while begrudging every penny spent on retirement income or health care for working people who have labored all their lives…
http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2013/02/04/pers-f04.html
Seriously??? Quit putting off the inevitable and let the cuts happen. If it isn't painful we won't learn our lesson and be right back here in a few years.
Right. How many families that have to cut their budget LIKE IT!? Its all part of being and acting like an adult.
A line from Wimpy fits Obama to a tee. I will gladly cut spending on Tuesday, for a tax increase today. More spending and higher taxes is all that Obama and Democrats have in mind, the endless talk of a balanced approach never seems to happen. What a surprise.
Uncertainty around the sequester is already having a negative impact on our economic growth-------
Are you that freakin stupid you don't realize every time you kick the can down the road a couple months it continues to negatively impact our economy? Either pass a serious package of cuts or let it happen. We've had enough of the political stalling that is ruining this country.
-----------------------------------
The small budget package would "allow Congress more time to reach a solution
Congress needs more time? What a joke. That is all we keep hearing. You dumb SOBs have had more than enough time. Either get done NOW or let the cuts take effect.

NoCommi's
Obama is the worst President ever ... Obama has eclipsed the utter misery caused by Jimmy Carter. Personnally when Obama first got in office I thought he was going to be OK ... Nobody warned us how far Obama leaned to the Marxist Nazi Progressive Commi's
@no commi's-
Well you seem to have missed the administration of george bush but that's ok. My question to you is this: did you ever finish grade school? First, when you resort to name calling you do it because you have nothing factual to post. Second, if you had you'd realize how stupid the last part of your comment is. The Nazis and the Communists are on diametrically opposed parts of the political spectrum. One is right, one is left. therefore, you can not be both. If Obama is a commi then bush II, Nixon, and Ray-Guns were fascists
LOL on wimpy, when tax reform was signed off on in 1986, congress was also to include spending cuts as well. Never happened.
Let's get our spending under control now before we start talking about revenue again.
I wonder if the armchair supporters of obama have any realization on what will happen to our economy once the FED starts raising interest rates again. Won't they act surprised as the government has to pay out more in servicing or debt and far less going towards everyones favorite discretionary federal program. Guess obama doesn't want to clue in those who think that someone else will pay the bill.
LMAO on those that believe the old saw... "I am from the government, and I am here to help you".

Actually, this IS the pain from your last Republican Administration.
TO: american-2051576 who wrote:
If Republicans know so much about economics, then why'd they destroy our economy in the first place?
Sorry, but Republicans have absolutely NO credibility they may have once had, especially when it comes to the economy.
If Republicans are serious about our Economic Recovery, they need to PUBLICLY get the advice of some serious Nobel Prize Winning Economists and make every word public so that we all know what's best for this country and not just listening to a bunch of politicians who vying for government money to put their own kids through college.
"Republicans calling for "pain", why doesn't that shock me."
Because even you know that life isn't easy, and you understand that Democrats live in a naive fantasy land.
American Girl, you mean Nobel prize winners like Milton Friedman? He advocated tax cuts during a recession...and if you're getting your economic education from this administration, I'd sue for educational malpractice! The only contributing factor the GOP had to this recession is the fact that during the Bush admin, the GOP acted like Dems and not Republicans. It certainly wasn't due to conservative policies!!!
If Obama were to stop stealing money from rich people in order to buy votes, the terrorists would win.
A,merican girl...
Why not just answer post 1.55? Simply put, where were the democrats? Heck, where was the jr senator from illinois (obama) on getting the economy under control? Why the jr senator was saying no to raising the debt limit and just gathering support for winning the 2008 democratic presidential nomination.
You may not like it, but there does come a time to act like an adult and so far obama still choses to point his finger elsewhere.
Agian, american girl, where was the left? Where was their hew and cry against what you say the right was doing. Come on sweety, why didn't they complain?
TO: pjam09 who wrote:

Is that why Republicans are trying to steal our retirement money, crashed our economy, let us get hit by terrorists, and continue to inflict pain on the American People, because Republicans have a few wackos out there trained to take Republicans' paid"!
That sounds pathetic as well as insane.

American girl, since when can just raising taxes (and eliminating deductions) on the top 2% fix our current $trillion dollar/year deficits, let alone our debt?
BTW - Why not tell us the name of your nobel prize winning economist? Better yet, how about if you tell us why no economist or politician has ever steered us clear of recessions? Perhaps in your partisan zeal you can't accept the fact that recessions are cyclicale in nature and that many on Wall st were democrat candidate supporters?

I admit to have given you a low IQ number earlier. Your last post 2.11 A G
just proved like the scarecrow in OZ, you need a brain. ( if you only had a brain )
American girl...
ROTFLMAO!
Must mean that obama should have lost last november, right?
Seems that POTUS obama is really the epitomy of the politician promising everyone and every group "A chicken in every pot" or at least a government sponsered utopia, rather than the reality that that "there are no free lunches"
Thanks for all your "strawman" arguments, it has been very entertaining, if not head shaking that you lack the ability to do any type of critical thinking, just blame someone else...
At least I can recognize that politicians on both sides of the aisle can't get it together and that POTUS obama lacks the ability to be a unifier.
sidebar... yesterday jaime dimon compared the european and American economies. First he acknowledged that the european politicians had the will to keep europe together but not the knowledge of how to fix the economy. Americans know how but lack will
Wow... I'm a republican Amer. Girl? You deduced that because I think we need to just deal with the pain now instead of putting off until God knows when?
I'd hate to be your car, house or kid. Something wrong with them but you'd just ignore them until it bit you in the ass.
gday
Macroeconomic principles matter to how we run our economy. Your household budget solutions don't work for the economy as a whole. In debt, stop spending, and you have a recession.
We have more young people entering the work force every day. They were born into this world and now that they are adults, they should be able to get jobs in this world too. I hear all this talk about saddling them with future debt, but getting a good job now will be better for them than paying higher taxes on a higher income years from now.
Besides, growth increases tax revenues and reduces government costs for the unemployed. Government cuts can work in a time of lower unemployment, but now is not the time.
Cutting revenue 400 billion a year, starting 2 wars off the books and a 100 billion a year drug plan again off the books is the republican idea of austerity? Bush drove our debt from 5.7 trillion to 12.1 trillion by never paying for anything. Bush was president for almost 8 years when the recession hit and every major spending program during those 8 years were his. Do you morons really think it was democratic policies that caused the recession? Getting enough democrats to support Bush's spending doesn't make them their programs. They were the Bush tax cuts not the democratic congress. Selling the wars to congress doesn't make them theirs. No one in congress was calling for an Iraqi invasion, Bush sold it.
Here Barry goes trying to take credit for something Congress already passed. This guy is a true legend in his own mind.
Congress did something, when did that happen?
In Bizarro world.
Where are the usual suspects of libtards on this article???
@RedRover: they passed the TAX increases that Bo-Dumbo demanded, so now where are the spending cut he said would happen??
lolololol, The President can only sign legislation into law, he does not write the bills that go through Congress.
Not this POTUS...if He doesn't like the laws, they are dismissed. He tells his cronies to "look the other way". He hires a bunch of Czars who mindlessly see to it that His proclamations and executive orders are followed to the Nth degree. Obama is no leader...
redrover, redrover, sure he can, all he needs to do is find a congressman to sponser the bill. Rememder his American jobs act proposal in 2011? It didn't go anywhere untill he found someone in congress willing to sponser it. Needless to say, it still failed, or did senate leader reid just table it? lol!
I think you will find it sitting on Boehner's desk.
President Barack Obama on Tuesday will propose that Congress pass a small package of spending cuts and tax reforms to put off the "harmful consequences'' of huge automatic spending cuts known as the "sequester'' for a few months, a White House official said.
TAX reform sounds like more taxes! Typcal democrats pass the tax increases and we'll cut spending later (LOL), small package of cuts and reforms. Equal small cuts and larger tax increases.
Exactly Freaky...Tax reform is no different than Health care reform. Reform is a Liberal euphemism for TAX INCREASE.
the tax reforms are to close the outlandish loopholes provided that only the wealthiest have enough money to use... and since 30 major U.S. corporations PAID NO TAXES AND MANY GOT REFUNDS from 2008-2010, I'd LOVE to see those loopholes end.
Here in my state our governor gave the "state of the state" address last night. Plan to cut taxes here... but only for the top 1%... GO FIGURE.
And if the sequester does happen, we will be dumped right into a full blown depression. While the DOD has more funding than it needs, by allowing the sequester to happen, will result in thousands upon thousands of people losing their jobs in this country. I know. My daughter is in the military Air National Guard Reserves and her civilian job in ON the base. She is one of the thousands upon thousands that will lose their jobs.
So yea, let's go for it. Like the economic collapse in 2008 wasn't bad enough.
Genie...
Funny thing about our tax codes, they were created by both the left and right.
So 30 major corporations paid no income tax. What tax laws did they violate?
Please tell us how many corporations exist in the U.S. today. How about if I simplify it for you, how about just counting up the number of corporations that make up the S&P 500, Nasdex and the Dow industrials? Then we can have everyone else apply common sence to realize that 30 companies are a drop in the bucket to the total number of corporations in the U.S.
BTW - you do realize that the IRS takes a dim view on anyone not paying taxes, don't you? They also take a dim view on any "for profit" business that consistantly shows losses for so many years out of 5.
Janine
What did you call it when Romney talked about tax reform? A euphemism for tax increase?
When republicans use some sort of write-off it is called an outlandish loophole but when a democrat uses the same write-off it is called an allowable deduction.
That is like saying a Republican prostitute is a whore but a democrat prostitute is a lady of the evening. They both screw you and take your money and the only rememberance you have is a dose of the clap. Congress is just a haven for such actions. We all know who the current madame is.
Let it happen.
Exactly. Spanking works cuz people remember pain. Just get it over with already.
The beatings will continue.
Dear Obama,
I'd like to ignore the huge increase in my social security taxes and keep on spending as if I was still making as much money as I used to get paid. Please give me money so that I too can enjoy the blissfulness of ignoring reality.
Thanks.
It's a baby step forward.
Denial.
The obama "kick the can " proposal. This guy is so pathetic. Too bad so many fools worship him. We are already in a 1.06 trillion dollar deficit for this fiscal year.
And the kick is up....... and down the road the can goes.
Cut the freaking spending!!!!
That would require democrats to cut their precious social programs that make up over 60% of government spending today. It would mean admitting that the butterflies and rainbows they have been trying to sell you are all bull@!$%#! It would mean admitting that government cannot take care of everyone! It would also mean that Republicans would have to compromise on taxes too! The esteemed idiots in Washington are not ready to do either yet and you and I will be stuck with the tab!
archangel, don't you mean our kids and grandkids?
While the sequester cuts will be bad for the economy, kicking the can further down the road will be worse! The President and congress need to set everything else aside and get this handled. Democrats have to become realistic and see that entitlements are what is driving the budget further and further out of control and Republicans have to realize that cuts alone will not clean up the mess. It is time to stop acting like children and get down to work.
obama,Please just go away.
You first!
The man really is irrational, isn't he?
Any republican voting for it, will be removed.
We elected all of you on the basis of stopping the borrowing and spending, do so or be gone.
Which election(s) are you talking about? Not everybody who voted did so to promote immediate actions toward severe austerity policies. Some people believe that getting unemployment down is the best way to reduce the debt.
Thats why you voted for a guy who has been horrible on unemployment right?
CO Yet they still voted for OBLAMER. that has done NOTHING to help this ECONOMY. Would of been better if NO ONE would of been elected. Then we would NOT here all the LIES this POS spreads.
Time to rid Washington of ALL CARREER POLITITIONS. Time to send the lifers packing. Time to get this country back on the right track.
Obama is not serious about any REAL spending cuts but wants more in taxes. Republicans are equally not serious as any "cuts" will simply be a minor cut to the growth of government rather than a real cut. Bottom line is that all politicans of both parties are scum and whores just out to enrich themselves and make themselves out to be American royalty! If the Democrats end up taking 80% of successful people's income, you know that the rallying cry the following morning will be that the "rich" must pay their "fair share".
They would NOT realize that the states took the rest. So then the rich will have to borrow money to pay there taxes.
And the spending train keeps on chugging along.
Choo - Choo. Boo - Hoo.
How much more spending do we need, time to stop and reassess the government as what we currently have obviously is not working!
Make the spending cuts O Bop So afraid of loosing a entitlement vote Its hard to beleive that this is an educated man, must of failed economics. Come on 2016
@ james :
When we start cutting entitlements should we start with the VA seeing how there taking way more money that any one else? Or do you want to take SS because heaven forbid they worked there whole life to get it. Or maybe we can cut unemployment because hey there all losers living off the Government. Or better yet we can stop paying the military hell we don't need them over seas killing people. So you and the others on here that want to blame the President for this that and the other well you pick the ones you want to shut down and lets get-er done.
OK, cut a lot from SS. People get over 200k more back than they put in when factoring in inflation, so no you have not worked for it. Unemployment should only be for so long. Get off your lazy ass and work. And we had proposals to change medicare. Libs just wouldnt have any of it.
What about the WELFARE, I say we cut that some. If you do NOT want to help yourself then I do NOT want to help you either. As long as you are willing to get off your lazy a$$ and help yourself then I do NOT have a problem with you getting help from us taxpayers. I fell I am talking for a bigger group than just me.
"Uncertainty around the sequester is already having a negative impact on our economic growth, and if it was to take effect it would cost hundreds of thousands of American jobs and have devastating impacts on our economy,'' the official said
Everything seems to have an effect on our economy except Obama.
OK I will bite how will it effect those JOBS?
When will the LIBERALS come clean on there thinking.
Congress passed something? Wow,that is news!
You liberals have a hard time getting the news when you only listen to MSNDC. The liberal news agency of the DEMORATS.
Keep spending who cars
I'm set Lmao
OBLAME Bulletman has plenty take some of his. He has NO problem giving some back. He likes your spending so start spending his money.
I can't believe the King is making such a proposal. What happen to playing hardball with Congress to do their job? Sounds like a ball of Play-Doh instead. Clank Clank Clank down the road endlessly.
So people lose their jobs, nobody was delaying anything when my job got axed 2 years ago. The country has to take its medicine. GETTER DONE!!!
Wow, you hate has begun to seep into your soul. So sad.
So pray for him and get over it...
Sorry Cat if you think preserveing the USA, is about HATE that would show why this country is so bad off. You liberals think its about you and your free stuff. When are you going to understand they are only in it for the MONEY. Neither side cares about the public, they only care about there portfolio & bank account.
Till we start addressing entitlement programs that are dragging this country down, nothing will improve.
I seriously doubt you even know what "entitlement programs" you're talking about are, and if you think that social programs are what is dragging this country down, then you have successfully been duped by the "look over there" diversion created by the Wall Street/Banking/1% that buy our representatives and dictate the financially driven domestic policies of this country to benefit themselves and nobody else. Now, go back to grazing little lamb baaaaaa!
The first line item should be a 10% pay cut for all members of Congress. These guys are already rich beyond our wildest dreams. Rep Issa has a net worth of about $400 million (google it).
Class envy on display. Kerry was the richest person in Congress but you mention Issa. Go figure... Who cares how much someone is worth? All federal employees should take at least a 50% pay cut. And give up their sweet heart benefits and retirement. Let them live with obamacare and social security like the rest of us...
Serving your country as a Congressman is supposed to be an honor and a privilege...not a way to get rich without really doing anything. Professional politicians are the bane of our country's existence..
You want to cut my pay by 50% 314159? Go ahead. My 1300 square foot home will go into foreclosure as will others, lowering the value of your home. I won't be able to afford a car anymore and doing anything to stimulate the economy (like dining out or shopping) will be out of the question. I hope you weren't depending on my income to keep you in YOUR job, and if you have a spouse or teenage children who work now, they won't be if you really want to halve the pay of thousands of federal employees.
agreed, 10% pay cut and healthcare to congress members, maybe like that they can feel the real pain out there and do something to keep what they have now.
WOW Julie I can NOT believe you work for the federal government. You post that those cuts to thousands of federal employees. Get an education. Look it up there are 2.65 million+ federal employees. Yet you think its in the thousands. Maybe now you will understand that the size of government is to BIG.
I do think 50% is to high of a cut. I had to take a 20% cut because of the failed policies that those in the federal government passed. I say they should enjoy the same painI had to. So they take a 20% cut in pay & deal witht he same healthcare they want to push onto the rest of AMERICA.
Things are tough all over Julie... Quit whining.
...and on and on it goes. This is like being stuck in a movie directed by Fellini and written by Serling. Yesterday, Obama said something to the effect that "there is still *some* waste" in government that can be trimmed. If a POTUS with any backbone and the stomach to be a "one-termer" really wanted to cut government waste and inefficiency...he/she could probably make that alone into a full time job.
So what do we get?...more "putting off until later so someone else can deal with it" nonsense. It's not like the economy is some minor side issue that we need to shove aside so we can get "real work" done, this is the "real work" for heaven's sake. These guys (this is NOT a Democrat vs Republican thing...and if you've fallen for that baloney, you deserve what you get) do not want to make the tough decisions because people are going to get ticked. Look at every bill that comes before legislators and you'll find 'riders", attachments, clauses whatever that were stuck in there to send money or votes or both to someone's district or State as a bribe to get them to vote "for". It's no wonder that people's esteem for our elected officials falls somewhere below that of loan sharks and dope dealers.
The last president to do that was jimmy carter and as a result he was unable to do anything within 6 mos.
To Quote all our Liberal friends on here-Obama caving, getting his ass whopped,a beat down by Congress.Let me know if I missed any.
Obama is trying to buy time until the 2014 mid-term elections when he hopes he'll have decisive Democrat majorities in both the House and Senate.
And he will. The GOP has become the party of stupid to quote Bobby Jindal.
It's your dream ,make as big as you want. never happen!
Obama's favorite game growing up was kick the can
Mr. Obamas game he admits to was selling drugs to support HIS addiction
to coke and weed. Yes Obama pushed drugs / poison on others so HE can keep
HIS habit fueled.
You have the POWER Luke.
