Senate passes $50.5 billion in Sandy funds

The Senate Monday night passed a $50.5 billion emergency spending bill to aid people in New York and New Jersey who are trying to rebuild their homes and businesses after last October’s devastation from super-storm Sandy.

The vote was 62 to 36, with 60 votes needed for passage.

Before approving the spending bill, the Senate defeated, 62 to 35, an amendment by Sen. Mike Lee, R- Utah, that would have offset the new Sandy outlays by reducing discretionary spending (including defense) by 0.5 percent over the next nine years.

The House had passed the Sandy spending bill two weeks ago. But the House action had come only after New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and House members from the Northeast harshly criticized Speaker John Boehner for not allowing a vote on a Sandy relief bill on New Years’ Eve.

Congress has already passed $9.7 billion in additional borrowing authority for the National Flood Insurance Program to help pay Sandy claims from homeowners in New York and New Jersey.

I bet if congress removed all the ear marks, pork and special deals to avoid tax to the corporation and rich individuals. We could remove at least a billion from this bill.

So Republican NJ Governor Christie very publicly scolds Republican Speaker Boehner for not bringing up the Hurricane Sandy bill for billions of dollars ( which we have to borrow) because the House was busy debating the fiscal cliff (not exacting sitting around eating bon-bons). So the House passes the bill on Jan 15 and sends it to the Senate. Does the Senate take it up quickly? Of course no; it took two weeks before Democrat Majority Leader, Harry Reid, allowed the bill to be brought to the Senate floor for a vote. Where was the outrage from Gov. Christie for these last two weeks that the Democrat held up the funds for the Sandy victims? Methinks there is something wrong with this picture,Republican Gov. Christie!!!

You get hit twice for this storm. Gov't coughs up 50 billion of our tax payer money, probably not even keeping track where it goes, then everyone who has homeowners insurance will see it raise this year. Where does it all end.

You know what is funny? Out of all of that money, none of the citizens will actually ever see it. It will all go to Corporations and Insurance companies. The same companies who are supposed to be prepared for this. But, since they will want to gain favor for the next elections, as well as from the lobbyists, its easy to send billions of dollars their way.

So thanks again Uncle Sam. I will not only be paying for higher insurance premiums, but now i'll have to pay more taxes as well. Good Job @!$%#s!

I realize the repubs would like the folks to use prayer. But the Lord wants us to set up a secular government to deal with these issues. I really can't find where Jesus was too worried about abortion- life begins with the first breath. He wasn't a big fan of the wealthy, or letting guys like bin laden go free at Tora Bora. The wing nuts are a perversion that must be swept into the dustbin of hell. Just sayin...

Paliban is too self-centered to understand true "Faith" and understand or consider the true study of philosophy and spirituality. People, States, progressives in general and people like Gov. Christy should start taking responsibility for their own problems. We cannot afford to rebuild everyones home or replace lost possessions. They basically want their fellow citizens to pay for it. Not my problem and we cannot afford it. My insurance, which I pay for, would take care of it. Plus, I would not rebuild in a dangerous area.

Considering what New York and New jersey pay the federal government every years the 60 billion does not even come close. and you talk a lot of crap the minute your insurance pays you for a disaster they send the bill to fema and make it all back. NY NJ pay so much in tax the road to your home was probably payed for by them that and anything else the fed covers.

That's why we spend $1.3 trillion more than we take in. I guess NJ and NY do not pay enough. NM is poor because of the illegals, drug addicts and Indians. We do however, think up all the great high tech military stuff and make A-bombs. By the way, my road is dirt.

          #61.2 - Mon Jan 28, 2013 10:11 PM EST

Yeah i figured your road would be dirt NY and NJ pay more then enough if we stopped paying you would still be in the stone age. I bet if we Really looked NM gets more from the fed then they put in with NY and NJ its the other way around we put more in then we get.

Have you ever driven on an interstate highway? Your folks, did they ever use Social security, medicare or even Medicaid? Ryan did, and they had money.

Actually, I paid for 45 years to get that and another retirement. I think the welfare should go away. Medicaid; Food Stamps; housing subsidies etc. The Feds do us a disfavor by taking money from States then redistributing it with strings. Same with education. I do not think you do.

Something else that is bothersome about this article is the bill to offset this 50B bailout which would have cut spending by one half of 1% over the next 9 years did NOT pass. What am I missing here. It sounds like the Republicans vs. the Dems again and gosh I am so sick to DEATH of that!!!! We Cannot continue to Bail out bail out bail out No matter how proper and necessary without compensating some other way. So I would like to know what was in it or what it was attached to that was so heinous that is needed to be soundly defeated

Spending offsets are some of what we precisely need to do to get out of this Multi-Trillion dollar hole we have dug ourselves. Isn't that the first rule of getting yourself in a hole-STOP DIGGING??!!

I hope all you know it all never get hit with a disaster that takes everything away from you. Most of you talk out of your ass about what you would do if it happened to you. Same Congress men and senators that talk the same crap all have had disasters and all held their hand out for more and more and they got it.

only thing anyone can do is try and make sure people who need it get the money.

I totally believe in charity, but I have a question. Don't most if not all homeowners have homeowners insurance and why is that not covering the damages?? Curious, not being sarcastic.

This money is not so much for homeowners as it is to help pay for the repairs to the infrastructure. We had a un-heard-of 14" storm surge. It flooded the subway system, damaged streets, tunnels and bridges. The Path stations and trains are just coming back. We lost train cars and train tracks.

The wonderful thing about homeowners insurance is that it does NOT pay for rising water, even if the rising water comes with a hurricane or a storm. I had water in my basement (36") after Irene, but was not covered as it was rising water. When we argued that it was rain from a hurricane, we & our neighbors were told no, and that was it. In some cases we had to argue for wind damage as well. We barely receive anything.

This to seems simple to me, you buy insurance to cover your property, if you have insurance you get to rebuild, if you don't then don't expect the taxpayer to bail you out. We have a responsiblity to rebuild infrastructure in a responsible way, not rebuild private individuals homes.

I own a house that was built 70 years ago. It has never flooded. It some how is in a FEMA designated "Flood Plain". My insurance was $900 a year just for flood insurance. I was paying for others to rebuild their houses because mine will never flood. What a government scam.

Sing praises to our savior, Obama. What a guy. He single handedly saved the whole east coast, all the illegal aliens, all the hard working welfare recipients. The list goes on. How could we have lived without him for all these years, 67 in my case. I'll never know how I got by without the messiah. But even though I did, he wants more of my hard earned savings to give to the welfare recipents and illegal aliens. Bless his heart.

I have decided if you can't beat em then join em. I have decided to go on the take like all of the Sandy and Katrina victims. President Obama has convinced me to stay unemployed and let all of you suckers pay for my unemployment. I will only work cash jobs and claim nothing on my taxes and let you rich chumps pay for my food stamps. The earned income credit has better odds than LOTTO and all I have to do is fill a few tax forms to get a really nice check. The rich do need to pay their fair share but I think anybody that makes over $39,900 should have to pay their fair share cause I am worried their gonna cut my unemployment and food stamps in 2014. Ain't America great!
