Subscribe to RSSPresident Barack Obama said he sat down for an unusual joint interview with his outgoing secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, "to have a chance to publicly say thank you."
"It has been a great collaboration over the last four years. I'm going to miss her — wish she was sticking around," Obama said in an interview with "60 Minutes" to air on CBS this Sunday.
"I want the country to appreciate what an extraordinary role she's played in the course of my administration," he added.
The president's high praise will no doubt stoke speculation about Clinton's own chances to succeed Obama in 2016. Many Democrats hope that Clinton, a former rival of Obama's during the 2008 primary, will seek the nomination; the outgoing secretary of state leaves office at the height of her popularity.
Clinton herself acknowledged that the joint sit-down interview would have seemed rare after her '08 battle against Obama.
"A few years ago it would have been seen as improbable because we had that very long, hard primary campaign," he said.
But she praised the president for his work, and said she wanted to serve out of love of country. Neither Clinton nor Obama addressed the former first lady's possible future political plans in the clip released by CBS.

Every day for weeks prior to the election, all I heard was the "Benghazi Cover-up". Before that, the "Fast and Furious" cover-up. Nothing to see in either case. There was no cover up at the "high levels" of government..........just monumental screw-ups from those in charge at the local level. I wish the republicans and their followers would put the same effort in fixing what is currently wrong. Honestly, the republicans have become a tabloid rather than a party. The only sensible republican president in the last 30 years was G. H. W. Bush. He Tried to balance the budget and get the country back on the right track after Regan, and the republican party didn't have the balls to support him.
Palin spent just over three years at the News Corp. cable network; she signed a contract with FNC in mid-January of 2010. A source close to Palin told political news site Real Clear Politics that she was recently offered a contract that she declined; others have said that she was not, in fact, offered a new contract.
Things were not always cordial between the network and the outspoken pundit. "I’m sorry Fox cancelled all my scheduled interviews tonight because I sure wanted to take the opportunity on the air to highlight Senator John McCain’s positive contributions to America, to honor him, and to reflect on what a biased media unfairly put him through four years ago tonight," Palin wrote in a Facebook post in August, when the network nixed Palin's appearances in its Republican National Convention coverage.
There were other signs of discontent, too: Palin told syndicated talk show host Mark Levin, not one of her on-air colleagues, that she would not be running for president in 2012; she also posted a vitriolic response to the Gabrielle Giffords shooting in March of 2011 against FNC chairman Roger Ailes' expressed wishes, according to New York Magazine's Gabriel Sherman (who has reported extensively on the network).
Fox has undergone what Ailes called a "course correction" in recent months, with some of its talent vocally supporting gay marriage, among other concessions to centrist politics. Palin, beloved of Tea Party Republicans, may simply not have fit in with the network's change in direction.
