One day after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee conducted a sometimes fractious hearing with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over last September's attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, the panel holds its confirmation hearing Thursday morning on the man President Barack Obama has chosen to succeed her: Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts.
Wednesday’s hearing with Clinton in the witness chair was marked by some anger and recriminations over the attack in Libya that resulted in the killing of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
Clinton at times clashed with Republicans over the administration’s version of events in the immediate aftermath of the Benghazi attacks, at one point forcefully arguing with Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., over the precise origins or motives of the attackers.
She intensely asked, "Was it because of a protest or is it because of guys out for a walk one night and they decide they go kill some Americans? What difference, at this point, does it make?"
Clinton also sketched the strategic landscape that Kerry will face in his new job if he’s confirmed by the Senate, as is nearly certain.
Clinton told the committee that the United States cannot allow the North African nation of Mali, just south of Algeria, to become a base of operations for al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), warning of the risk of AQIM attacks on the United States itself.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., grills Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the administration's handling of the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi and the events that followed.
“We are in for a struggle,” she predicted. “But it is a necessary struggle. We cannot permit northern Mali to become a safe haven. People say to me all the time, well, AQIM hasn't attacked the United States. Well, before 9-11, 2001, we hadn't been attacked on our homeland since, I guess, the War of 1812 and Pearl Harbor. So you can't say, well, because they haven't done something they're not going to do it.”
She also sounded the alarm about the proliferation of weapons from caches in Libya that were “liberated” after Moammar Gadhafi was toppled, with U.S. and NATO help, in 2011.
“Libya was awash in weapons” before Gadhafi was overthrown, she said. “Obviously, there were additional weapons introduced. But the vast, vast majority came out of Gadhafi warehouses ... and then went on the black market, were seized by militias, seized by other groups, and have made their way out of Libya into other countries in the region, and have made their way to Syria, we believe.”
She said the Algerian terrorists who held foreigners hostage at a natural gas plant last week, killing 37 of them, were armed with weapons from Libya.
Syria a looming challenge
Clinton also highlighted another looming challenge for Obama and Kerry: the civil war in Syria in which 60,000 people have been killed. Obama has decided to not impose a no-fly zone against the regime of President Bashar Assad, but he now faces growing bipartisan pressure to give more aid to the Syrian opposition.
On Tuesday, a group of three Democratic and two Republican senators just back from a trip to the Middle East urged Obama to send more aid to the Syrian refugees; some urged him to impose a no-fly zone and to provide weapons to anti-Assad fighters.
“We are all in agreement that more needs to be done to assist militarily the opposition within Syria,” said one of those senators, Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. He added that the debate over what the Obama administration ought to be doing in Syria “is going to be reinvigorated” because the fall of Assad, thought to be imminent a year ago, now is in doubt.
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., challenged Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the handling of the Benghazi attacks and said that had he been president, he would've relieved her from her post.
“Clearly now, he is using his air force for nothing more than the slaughter and massacre of his own people,” Blumenthal said. “And the United States ought to be finding a way to either disarm or deflect or somehow diminish that power.”
Clinton said Wednesday in her Senate testimony that, “It is a red line for this administration with respect to Syria concerning the use of chemical weapons. Syria, as you probably know, in addition to having the fourth largest army before this revolution has a very significant supply of chemical and biological weapons.”
The Obama administration, she said, is trying “to prevent those from falling into the wrong hands, Jihadist hands, Hezbollah hands .. .”
She added, “This Pandora's box, if you will, of weapons coming out of these countries in the Middle East and North Africa is the source of one of our biggest threats.”
Kerry, a member of the Senate since 1985, is the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee but will be ceding that post to Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J.
A Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, Kerry was the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004 and won 59 million votes, but lost to President George W. Bush.
In announcing the nomination, Obama said on Dec. 21, “John’s entire life has prepared him for this role. As the son of a Foreign Service officer, he has a deep respect for the men and women of the State Department -- the role they play in advancing our interests and values, the risks that they undertake and the sacrifices that they make along with their families.”

I find it amazing that a few Republicans seem to think that Benghazi is the only attack they have ever heard of. Attacks by terrorists have been happening since there has been terrorists. There was been 32 attacks on US Embassies and 7 of them were during the Bush years. There has been attacks on Military compounds with numerous armed solders present. The Cole was attacked by a small group of terrorists.
There was no grueling questions regarding what happened in each of these cases and accusations flung at the other Party. Everyone feels badly about the loss of these men but compare that to 9-11. Terrorists who actually were living right here in the US all that time and taking flying lessons. A previous attack on NY and a warning something BIG would happen. And on our own soil during peace time. What did we do to prevent that attack? Nothing. Not even airport security was increased.
And immediately after 9-11, a war based on lies that killed many thousands and not one person has been taken to task for that. Just when you think Republicans could not make themselves look more dumb than they do already, here they come to prove us wrong.
Americans died and our president lied.

Sure, terrorists have been attacking us for years. But that's not what the grilling of Clinton was about. It was about the lies that were told to cover up that it was a terrorist attack only months after President Obama said "al Queada is all but decimated".
The Secretary of State's office lied to us. Clinton took responsiblity for it (ultimately, it falls on the president, but whatever) and that showed class. Nope, I'm no fan of Bush and would love to see him sitting behind bars for most of the things he did in office, but we're past that now. We had the Iraq WMD hearings. Rice was the one who got (most) of the blame for that. As far as the 9/11 NYC attack...sure, tell the government "something big is going to happen in the US"...where the hell do you start looking if you don't want to scare the populace? Hind sight is 20/20, but if I were to tell you there's a $100 bill loose in your neighborhood, where would you start looking (and I have family in Michigan, I could make that happen :p)?
The Iraqi war had been coming since shortly after the first Gulf War. Please stop with the revisionist history. Everyone...EVERYONE...thought Iraq had chemical weapons. That was why there were UN inspectors there all through the 1990s. It was how Sadam kept Iran from invading. It was how Sadam kept the Kurds in check. It's how Sadam kept his people in line. Do you not remember the testemony during his trial by the survivors of one such attack on his own people? Ultimately, the WMD lie was Sadam's. Not Bush's, not Clinton's, Sadam's.

“I arrived in Islamabad, I think, five days after Ray Davis had been taken into a jail in the Punjab and was at very real risk of being hauled out of the jail and lynched,” Coons said. “Sen. Kerry was about to show up and negotiate on behalf of the administration. And it was clear that both the diplomats and the military folks we met with viewed him as a real man of credibility and experience who was likely to contribute meaningfully to those negotiations.”
Davis pleaded self-defense. After weeks of wrangling between the US and Pakistan, he was released in exchange for “blood money” paid to the dead men’s relatives.

The acquittal came when relatives of the dead men pardoned him in court.
They confirmed to the judge overseeing the case that they had received compensation - known as "blood money".
Under Pakistani Sharia law, relatives of a murder victim can pardon the killer.
Reports say about 18 family members of the two dead men were in court on Wednesday and confirmed that they wanted Mr Davis to be freed and pardoned because they had received "blood money".
The Pakistani media has reported that the families received 200 million rupees ($2.34m, £1.1m) but US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denied the US government had paid any blood money.
Public anger intensified after unnamed US officials said that Mr Davis had been secretly working for the CIA at the time and questions are likely to remain as to what he was exactly doing at the time.

Boy, I must have been watching a different witch hunt than the rest of you because at no point did I see some big fat lie revealed, or some Congressman uncover a smoking gun to shout victory. All I saw was a very poised woman state that at first they believed one thing, then as the facts came out they said we're wrong and this is what happened. To even attempt to make the claim that she lied deliberately for whatever reason is just simply bull@!$%#.

Whatever mistakes the Obama Administration made in initially assessing this attack as a spontaneous outgrowth of a demonstration, these pronouncements did not cause the attack; they only created an air of suspicion.
It seems probable the potential threat faced by embassy staff and guards in Benghazi prior to the attacks was underestimated. And to the degree this was avoidable, we need to make changes so as to avoid such mistakes in the future. But for as long a the United States maintains a diplomatic, economic or military interest in most countries around the world, these attacks will occur, and will sometimes succeed.
It just occurred to me that your summation of this event, "Americans died and our president lied.", could almost be applied to George W. Bush and the Iraq War, except that first George W. lied, and then Americans died.

It is not so much as the attack occurred, but rather the Obama Administration knew of the coming attack and did nothing to stop them. Three (3) to four (4) weeks prior to the staged "protests", the USA State Department was aware of the plans of attack on the Consulate Compound.
The USA's Libyan Embassy is in Tripoli, not Benghazi.

The difference between previous attacks and this one is that the others were surprises while this one has a trail of evidence of other attacks and the ambassador begging for protection and military personnel close by that were not allowed to help the ambassador in a 7 hour long attack.

I don't know why this administration bungled the aftermath of the Benghazi attack. But, as mentioned in other posts, attacks on american embassies and consulates have happened before and will happen gain. (hope not) The purpose of this hearing should have been to find ways to prevent such attacks. But of course it turns into a political point scoring exercise.
Silver lining: All these neo-con-artists will be this miserable for the next four years. They will continue to whine, continue to spout doom and gloom, continue to hate America first. They have instituted their own punishment. Being "them" is a punishment.

Carol - of those attacks you sight, how many ambassadors were killed.In those attacks how many embassy's fell and without security support deployed to them. How many Presidents and Administration personnel lied that it was only a demonstration (which it is fact never happened).
That is what is at issue here. The credibility of the White House and the Administration as a whole. If liberals would open their eyes to the larger credibility issue they would not be posting such defensive "head in the sand" comments.

Even Clinton's time line given before Congress contradicts her actions when she gave a speech about this horrible video that the United States had nothing to do with, 5 days after the attack. Or Obama at the UN two weeks later claiming the video caused the attack. This lie was for purely political expediency. They knew they failed the Ambassador, ignored warnings, and then watched as they died rather then try to send help. So the Obama administration came up with a story of an attack so spontaneous that no one could have foreseen it coming, and as such there was simply nothing they could have done. What happened to the most honest and transparent administration ever to occupy the White House? Oh yeah, that was just another broken campaign promise, because talk is cheap.

Clinton was referring to the immediate "controversy" over the administration saying it was an attack, like the ones springing up all over the world that week, in response to an anti-Muslim movie trailer released on the Internet, rather than a terrorist attack, which it turned out to be. She then went on to say, is what is important is learning from what happened, and correcting security failures.
So Clinton is worried about AQIM attacking the US eh? And she wants to strip American citizens of their 2nd Amendments rights and disarm us? That makes perfect sense; another typical chain-of-thought from a liberal.
It's not about Republicans or Democrats. It is about OUR LEADERS lying to the American people when they KNEW FOR A FACT that our embassy was under attack by terrorists.

The latest Pew Research shows that liberals are less tolerant of opposing points of view. The study finds liberals are far more sensitive about criticism. Liberal columnist Kirsten Powers noted that “Liberals, because they are used to controlling all the media, pretty much, academia, that for them, when they hear things that don’t jibe with what they want to hear, it’s very disconcerting and unsettling to them.” Powers explained that after getting out of her own “Democratic bubble,” she noticed that conservatives tend to be more open to hearing opposing viewpoints than liberals."
Seems the results of that polling is pretty much right on when you read threads on this blog. Endless name calling and insults are standard liberal responses.

The issues with Benghazi, specifically, are that there were numerous requests by consulate personel for additional security, prior to the attack, which were apparently ignored.
Also, Obama knew the attacks were taking place. He went downstairs into the White House situation room and watched them on a closed circuit feed from a drone plane He did not order additional military support from a US military base that was about an hour away, for what reason nobody seems to know. He then went upstairs to the family quarters, went ton bed, and got up early the next morning in order to fly to a fundraiser in Las Vegas. There is some question as to how long Ambassador Stevens and the others clung to their lives, and whether additional military support would have saved them.
Lastly, there's the whole thing about the stories the White House told after the attack. Stories, about anti-islamic videos, and the attacking being a spontaneous protest rather than a planned terrorist event. Obama claims to have called the incident "AN act of terrorism" the day after it happened in a Rose Garden speech that he gave. But, if you actually read a transcript of that speech, you would see that he said "ACTS of terror, such as this....." He did not specifically call this "AN act of terrorism." There's a huge difference. Especially since he also talked about tolerance of other people's opinion & religions, and freedom of expression earlier in the same speech. Not to mention the speech he gave at the UN in which lectured the General Assembly on tolerance of other people's viewpoints, and did so specifically in reference to the Benghaziattack. Then, two weeks later, they came out and said it was an Al Qaeda sponsored attack. That says a lot since this was just before the election, and the administration wanted to claim that it had effectively wiped out the Al Qaeda threat. So, Obama and his people effectively LIED about the attack initially, and their motivation was to hide the fact that this was a terrorist attack, because the election was only about 8 weeks away.
My problem with grilling Hillary is that she can't order military action. Only the President can do that. It seems that everytime he screws up, someone else comes in and falls on their sword for him. The media runs interference, and he gets off scott free. The dude is teflon coated to the max. I haven't seen anything like this since the government was trying to make a case against John Gotti back in the early nineties.
Bush was a buffoon, and that's what got him in trouble. But, this guy is smart and cunning. The garbage he pulled at the second debate, in which Candy Crowley incorrectly backed him up about referring to Benghazi as "an act of terrorism" was as slick a maneuver as we've ever seen in politics. And he did it "on the fly," standing on his feet. It's one thing to lie. It's altogether another thing to be able to do it so so quickly, so naturally, and so eloquently.
That's why lawmakers in DC are so hopped up over this situation. When you add everything up, it doesn't come out to an even number. There are gaps, and gaffes which need to be filled in, and unfortunately, Hillary got the brunt of it yesterday.

They had made plans to invade the California Coast after attacking Hawaii, but it was changed do to the fact that they calculated that so many Americans were armed and would be fighting house to house, that it would not be a worthwhile venture to ontake such armed citizens. Why do you think we dropped the atomic bomb on Japan? Because we knew the casualties would be so great fighting the Japanese on their homeland. Think before you speak out of your southern mouth!

Secondly, it was the Japanese goal to establish a 2 ring defense in the Pacific. Not to invade the mainland, and after the defeat at Midway the Japanese even gave that up.

Chris, just because you wore a uniform for 13 years, an accurate historian it does not make you. Why don't you go to Tokyo and visit the war museum there. While you are there you can look at the exact plans drafted for the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the landing of forces on San Clemente Island. Midway occurred about 6 months later and there were also troop transports heading north to distract the allied forces from midway, with midway being the main objective. Unfortunately for the Japanese forces, their code had already been broken and the US knew it was a decoy heading away from Midway and kept the forces in the Midway Theater.
As for the supply route, Japan had already taken over most of the wester european cities in asia, ie. Hong Kong, Singapore and the Phillipines. These areas expanded their resources do to their port facilities and the only area that held them back was Burma, still controlled by the British.
So again I say, before you go running your mouth, do a little "boots on the ground" factual checking and just don't sit on your butt and type words into Google. I have learned in my many years, that if you want to really know the truth about something, go to the source. Also, I am sure you Google, WMD and it says nothing about them in Iraq. Again, go to Kuwait and look at the pictures on the wall of their museum that showed the Iraqi invasion into Kuwait City. You can clearly see pictures of mobile missile launchers in the background and BTW, those launchers are now in Syria where they were moved after the Americans invaded Iraq. You know how I know they are there, I will let you guess, it has something to do with a SF86 and if you were truly in the military, you know what I am talking about.

On this matter people were asked questions as the incident unfloded and answered with what they had at the time. Well Carol, in the other attacks on US Embassies, they were either well staffed and defended and no Diplomat, not to mention Ambassador was killed. The point the GOP is trying to make is that for months Chris Stevens was begging for help and a blind eye was given to his request. The RSO had also stated numerous times that he felt the compramise of the Embassy was eminent, but again, nothing was done.
For those of you not familiar with the US Embassies abroad, thank your stars that you don't have to deal with them. They used to really care about the US citizens abroad and did what they could to help you, now they are just a multi billion dollar a year revenue collector. I have been travelling abroad for the past 12 years and seen the complete decline of the Embassies caring for US citizens. Their also main security forces are local nationals who could care a less about the Embassy.
Let me explain how it works. Millions of people a day submit request for visas to come to the US at the Embassies abroad. They pay anywhere from $200 to $300 just for a basic visitors visa and pay more for business visas. Immediately 70% are declined and told they can reapply, but have to pay again. The Department of State complains about not having the monies to pay for security, but their annual "income" from visa requests are in the TRILLIONS! Last year alone, Department of State made a combined, 2,6 TRILLION dollars from all Embassies just in visa requests, not to mention poor smoes like me that have to pay $50 dollars for each paper notorized at the Embassy.
Back to Security measures. Too many times I have went to an Embassy abroad and asked to get some paperwork done or even register with that Embassy, but been told, by a local national, meaning a person who is not an American, that I can not enter my own Embassy except on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2-4 pm. THAT IS INSANE!!!!! And if any attacks happen, those local nationals are the first to run away and leave their post ungaurded. Now you say, why would the Embassy have so many "locals" working their security when they have thousands of US military unemployed and more then capable of protecting the Embassies? Good question, here is the answer. Because they would rather save money by hiring a local at miniumum wage, then hire an experienced American! It all boils down to money, so don't fool yourself into thinking the US actually cares for it's citizens, those days are long gone.

Though I remain critical for the Obama administration, I'm disappointed at our declining embassies and weakened footprint as you outlined.
Ambassador Stevens was not the only one to be killed by terrorists. Is it a tragedy, of course it is. The question of a cover-up has much more to do with the timing of the attack (pre-election). I was actually at the briefing of SOCOM personell when Saddam was brought to SOCOM HQ in Doha Qatar. In that time it was reported that he had numerous launch missiles, but would not report their whereabouts. Later, they were located in 2010 to be in Syria and are still there today. Just another government cover-up as to not expose the truth and keep Americans in the dark as to their true intentions to spread mass fear and divide the country even more.
The Benghazi Consulate did ask for help, did ask for the funding to provide the help. Their request was not honored as Congress did not appropriate the funding to them. As a matter of fact, Congress was reducing funding at the time. They are so worried about our budget. And we all know who controls the checkbook in Congress, it is the House.
So stop blaming everyone else. Congress needs to stop worrying about their careers, since most will soon end anyway, and focus and concentrate on actually accomplishing something. Granting the funding that was being asked for would have been a really good first step.

Look at every link there was during the time of him running for President and all make factual statements that he never received those awards from any military orginization. And as far as serving in Vietnam, I was born in 1970 and for the past 12 years of my life have been in 30 diffrent "post conflict" countries protecting diplomats and am still currently overseas doing such now.
I can say with whole heartedness that no Diplomat or VIP in my care has ever so much had a hangnail. And for your information, I was in Libya in August of 2012 on a PSD deployment and was ashamed of what the US was considering a "protected assest" there. So before you spout your liberal filled propaganda, make sure you have the "FACTS" of what you talk about, but I know that is hard, because most liberals talk out the southern end of their mouths!!!

For one, you don't put in for "medals" you have to be suggested by a ranking officer and then confirmed by others that witnessed the actions taken. Kerry's actions were never confirmed and the officer that suggested him to receive the medals was a close friend. Secondly, most people do not see getting a medal a big deal because they were just doing their job. Those are the true "hero's", not the ones that run around throwing their medals in your face.

As you previously explaned JJ, your commanding officer and a military tribunal has to "submit you for medals" and they approve said request, based on the merits of your actions during your service. Not only did Senator Kerry receive three purple hearts for his service in Vietnam, he is also the recipient of a Bronze Star... not that easy to acquire.

Have you researched Kerry's background? I have and so did lots of others when he ran for President. As far as the purple heart, if you get a cut finger in combat, you get a purple heart for that and as far as the Bronze Star, it was never confirmed by any others, other then his flunky who requested it on his behalf.
Money can buy you about anything you want. Just today on Ebay you can buy any medal from purple heart, to bronze stars, to medals of valor on the internet. Not to mention how many people have even attended White House functions in full uniform with all their ribbons and medals and later found that person was never even in the military. Look at George Seniors Inagrual Ball. A guy dressed as a retired admiral attended the ceremony with his medals and the big one, the Medal of Honor worn proudly around and come to find out, he was discharged after 3 years in the Navy...Kerry bought his Bronze Star and wears it proudly around as well...:)

I'm not a big fan of anyone in government. But the democrats are the worse bunch in our history. From backing slavery, putting the native Americans off their land, taking land from Mexico to turning us away from a free market base. They do have their favorites like big industry meaning they have their friends running companies they believe are to big to fail. They are very willing to let the poor people of this country starve to death and take everything they do have to give to the rich. They want to stop the tax breaks and that will cost the average person another 2 or $300 dollars a year when they can't pay the bills now. But the super rich well they have government bonds and you can't tax them until they come out and they will have it covered by then. In thirty years of match shooting I have learned the ins and outs of purchasing ammo from every major supplier on the planet. Right now, and it's getting worse, ammo is on backorder for more than two years! Your first thought, if you are a liberal, is that bible-thumping, rogue private militia type that are paranoid of Obama's changes are buying up billions of dollars of ammo inventory and holding two years+ standing orders, right? Not so, our government is buying up the ammo and all future ammo being purchased! Why would they do that? Simple. If they buy up the ammo, they really don't need to worry about legislation, do they?!! And...what they call assault rifle (which really aren't) manufacturers won't sell anything that the public can't obtain ammo for.
