Biden not shying away from 2016 speculation

Vice President Joe Biden has barely hidden his possible interest in running for president in 2016, and now, the loquacious former senator has begun to lay the groundwork for a potential campaign to succeed President Barack Obama.

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden shares his thoughts on whether his father will run for the presidency in 2016.

"In a couple years, I think he's going to take a hard look at it," Beau Biden, the vice president's son and the attorney general of Delaware, said on MSNBC. "I hope he does."

A potential Biden bid for the presidency will come as little surprise to observers of the vice president over the past few years; Biden has often dropped hints of his interest in running as Democrats' nominee in 2016, and has repeatedly refused to rule out running in 2016 when asked.

Biden further stoked speculation this inaugural weekend, when he stopped by the Iowa State Society's inaugural ball, and invited top New Hampshire Democrats to his formal swearing-in ceremony on Sunday. Both Iowa and New Hampshire traditionally host the first two nominating contests of a presidential cycle.

At the Iowa ball, he mistakenly referred to himself as president, before correcting himself. “I’m proud to be president of the United States,” he said before pausing to rephrase. “I’m proud to be vice president of the United States but I am prouder to be Barack Obama, President Barack Obama’s vice president.”

And on Monday, during the inaugural parade, he glad-handed his way down Pennsylvania Avenue. Biden waved and pointed at parade-goers on the sidelines, and even ran over to shake the hand of NBC’s Al Roker, positioned behind a security barricade.

Moments after speaking with President Obama, NBC's Al Roker gets an impromptu handshake from Vice President Biden along the inaugural parade route.

When he ran into a Republican voter in Florida during the closing days of the campaign, Biden cautioned the Obama administration's health reform law would be a chit in his column during the next presidential campaign. "After it's all over when your insurance rates go down, then you'll vote for me in 2016," he said, employing a quip that quickly drew attention for its electoral implications.

Biden has twice run for president before, in 1988 and 2008. And each time, his candidacy flamed out. In the '88 campaign, Biden withdrew before the first nominating contest following allegations that he had plagiarized portions of speeches.

Biden survived through the Iowa caucus in 2008, but ended his campaign following a fifth place finish in the contest. The then-Delaware senator committed some trademark gaffes during that campaign, too. Biden joked, for instance, about how "you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent." He also memorably referred to Obama, his future boss, as "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean."

But Biden, who served in the Senate from 1973 to 2009 and established himself as an expert on matters of foreign policy, now finds himself arguably at the apex of his political strength. Forty-one percent of Americans said they have a positive impression of the vice president in the most recent NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll, versus 37 percent who have a negative impression of Biden. Those aren't blockbuster numbers, but they're among Biden's best in the history of the poll.

But a successful run in 2016 would make Biden the nation’s oldest inaugurated president.  He turns 74 in 2016, a year older than Ronald Reagan when he took the oath at his second inaugural.

Biden emerged during the 2012 Obama campaign as a key asset of the president's, stumping repeatedly in key blue collar corners of swing states like Ohio and Wisconsin. During those stops, the vice president offered some of the sharpest criticism of Republican nominee Mitt Romney's policies in a direct appeal to middle class voters.

Brian Snyder / Reuters

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, dance at the Commander-in-Chief's Ball in Washington, Jan. 21, 2013.

Biden acted as a key player during the president's first term on matters ranging from foreign policy to domestic. Biden was tasked with implementing the 2009 economic stimulus, and Obama asked him more recently to lead the task force that developed recommendations to curb instances of gun violence.

Obama has also repeatedly turned to Biden to lean on his long-standing relationships in the Senate to help forge deals with Republicans. When talks to avert the "fiscal cliff" reached an impasse late this past December, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., reached out to Biden, who won some of the credit for the last-minute deal.

Still, Biden has also become a favorite target of conservatives during the last four years, not least of which because of his not-infrequent gaffes. Conservative media outlets enjoyed stoking speculation, for instance, that Obama might bump Biden off of the ticket in favor of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton -- suggesting that Biden had become too big of a liability to the president's re-election campaign.

And indeed, there were moments during the 2012 campaign where Biden veered badly off script. When he expressed his personal support for same-sex marriage during a May 6 appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press," he preempted Obama's own anticipated endorsement of gay and lesbian marriage rights. Obama was forced to hastily follow in the footsteps of his vice president.

Biden also won the enmity of the Romney campaign when he told a predominantly African-American audience that the GOP ticket's economic policies would "put y'all back in chains."

But despite Biden's propensity to fall off-message on occasion, he still enjoys a champion in one key ally: Obama.

"One decision I know was absolutely correct -- absolutely spot on -- was my choice of vice president," Obama said Sunday at an inaugural reception. "I could not have a better partner than Joe Biden."

That's a line that Biden would no doubt love to feature in a campaign ad in just a few years. He might not be the only Democrat in the race -- many in the party hope that Clinton will seek the nomination again -- though the vice president's door to running is open than ever.

Contrary to most of the recent field of GOP candidates - Joe Biden is respected and well liked on both sides of the aisle. And, like George W. Bush, you should appreciate that he can say things off the cuff on occasion that might raise an eyebrow or two.

If they have the same kind of crew in primary next election, Biden will be a shoe in.

Joe Biden as President in 2016 is a very real possibility. By then well over 50% of American households will be receiving some kind of monthly government check. Add to that an even more dumbed down population and he could be a shoe-in.

I think the GOP will go for another Bush. Mainly because the last two have worked out so well. Two wars. $13 trillion in debt with no appreciable improvement in anyones bottom line ( unless you count the richest 1% - They got enormously rich) Destroyed education. Ruined military. Politicized SCOTUS. Divided country and Congress. Insurance, gasoline and food sky high. International image ruined for the next 25 years. Ruined economy .Etc. Etc.. You can thank the Bush's for a LOT of misery and death. Yeah, we need another one! Maybe he can blame everything on Obama, just like all the other Republicants.

I think Joe would do a heck of a good job - but his gaffes could cause him problems. I'm sure that Joe doesn't want to hear this - but he could be the first vice president to serve for 16 years continuously! That would be pretty incredible, and if he is used as much in a second presidency as he has been in the first, his accomplishments might be greater than some presidents.

@Ozzie, I stand corrected there were 64 embassy deaths during Bush.

    Please don't forget:

"The Washington Post points out that under the Ryan Plan that House Republicans unanimously … funding for the State Department would have been cut by 20% HERE:

Ryan, Issa and other House Republicans voted for an amendment in 2009 to cut $1.2 billion from State operations, including funds for 300 more diplomatic security positions. Under Ryan’s budget, non-defense discretionary spending, which includes State Department funding, would be slashed nearly 20 percent in 2014, which would translate to more than $400 million in additional cuts to embassy security."

If you cut security and get less security things like this happen.

Hey Eric you forgot that more democrats voted for it than republicans.

just because you cut cost doesn't mean you cut security where it is needed why does the ambassador in France need a marine detachment ?

Ambassador Chris Stevens did not have a Marine detail in Benghazi, Libya. But
White House Senior Advisor and Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett has a full
Secret Service detail on vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, according to Democratic
    pollster Pat Caddell.

That’s the pathetic foreign policy of the Obama administration, says Caddell
today in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News. “Jarrett seems to have a 24
hour, around the clock detail, with five or six agents full time,” Caddell
explains. “The media has been completely uninterested. We don’t provide security
for our ambassador in Libya, but she needs a full Secret Service security
detail. And nobody thinks there’s anything wrong with this. And nobody in the
press will ask. What kind of slavish stoogery are they perpetrating here?

From the view in the cheap seats... it didn't really matter who won in 2012 (Rep or Dem), and it won't make any difference in 2016. Spending isn't going to drop by any appreciable amount (I'm sure it will continue to increase), the national debt isn't going anywhere but up, our schools will continue churning out more McDonald's employees every year, and the only monetary program Congress will continue to pass without delay will be their own pay raises.

Given the amount of debt piling up in the private sector from credit cards to home forclosures, and the fact our elected officials have proven themselves incapable of developing any government policy even remotely capable of delivering a free market and restoring financial solvency, I'm pretty excited. There's going to be even more opportunity for those capable of making and saving a buck, especially if you're able to take advantage of the failures of others. Sounds a bit crass I know... but when opportunity knocks...

The Communist regime in china are well known for their
brutality and cruelty against mankind and would not hesitate to prosecute and
torture anyone to death in secret jail who just posted negative comments about
china on the internet to achieve their political motives so no one can uncover
the abuses and violations of human rights in china to the world. For example because
internet police from china managed to trace the ip address of the NGO malaysian
bloggers who posted negative comments about china on the internet, this prompted
the communist regime in china to deploy massive amount of communist officers
and even police chief to malaysia to cooperate with the malaysia government to
enact new cyber law 114A to prosecute those NGO malaysian bloggers who posted
negative comments about china on the internet and to torture these NGO
malaysian bloggers to death in secret jail elsewhere in malaysia by the
malaysia government which is masterminded by the communist regime in china in
order to achieve their political motives to purge and assassinate anyone who
posted negative comments about china on the internet. Just because these NGO
malaysian bloggers who posted negative comments regarding abuses of human
rights in china on the internet, these NGO malaysian bloggers now faced life
threatening dangers of being prosecuted and torture to death in secret jail elsewhere
in malaysia by the malaysia government which is masterminded by the communist
regime in china. I don’t know how much benefits do the communist regime in china
have given to the malaysia government until they willing to enact such cyber
law 114A in order to prosecute and torture these NGO malaysian bloggers to
death in secret jail in malaysia which is masterminded by the communist regime
in china. Because the new cyber law 114A which is enacted by the malaysia
government still in place,so the malaysia government is secretly launching their
investigation to prosecute those NGO malaysian bloggers who posted negative
comments about china on the internet and to torture these NGO bloggers to death
in secret jail elsewhere in malaysia by the malaysia government which is
masterminded by the communist regime in china to achieve their political
motives of purging and assassinate anyone who posted negative comments about
china so no one can uncover the abuses and violations of human rights in china
to the world. Under the newly enacted cyber law 114A by the malaysia government
which is masterminded by the communist regime in china, not only freedom of
speech is a crime now in malaysia, but any NGO malaysian bloggers who caught of
posting any negative comments about china on the internet will be prosecuted
and be torture to death in secret jail by the malaysian government with the
help from communist regime in china. One thing for sure is that malaysia
government now has become the new puppet state of china where communist regime
in china deployed massive amount of communist officers and even police chief to
malaysia everyday to cooperate with the malaysia government to crack down their
NGO malaysian bloggers who just posted negative comments regarding abuses of
human rights in china on the internet. Since United States is the largerst
foreign investor to malaysia,US must use its economic clout to press the
malaysia government not to cooperate with the communist regime in china against
their NGO malaysian bloggers who just expressed their opinions on the internet because
freedom of speech is not a crime. United states also need to press the malaysia
government to abolish this newly enacted cyber law 114A which is masterminded by the communist regime
in china because it is a serious violations of human rights to prosecute and
torture these NGO malaysian bloggers who just express their opinions on
internet to death in secret jail elsewhere in malaysia by the malaysia
government which is masterminded by the communist regime in china. If united
states don’t act now, more and more countries to follow the path of the malaysia
government to enact cyber law similar to 114A to prosecute and torture any NGO
bloggers who posted negative comments about china on the internet to death in
secret jail which is masterminded by the communist regime in china to achieve
their political motives to purge and assassinate anyone who posted negative comments
about china on the internet to achieve their political motives so no one can
uncover the abuses and violations of human rights in china to the world.
Freedom of speech and human rights will become history due to the bad
influences from communist states like china on countries around the world such
as malaysia. Dictatorship and restrictions of speech will become new global
trend on countries around the world due to the bad influences from communist
    state like china.

Those people who promotes dictatorship, brutality and cruelty
against mankind, abuses of human rights, censorship on the media & internet,
prosecute and torture NGO bloggers to death in secret jail like the Red army
and communist regime in china are the bad guys. Those people who advocates democracy
and human rights like the taiwan people and the chinese dissidents Nobel Peace
price winner Liu Xiao bo who is still in jail are the good guys. Mr.Xi who is
the new president of the communist regime in china ever told the media that he
like to watch Hollywood movies and he often noticed that good guys always wins
in the end. Yes,he’s right, his communist regime in china is going to fall very
soon. President obama is just like the “Green lantern” in the hollywood movie
where no evil shall escape his sight. Obama sensed the urgent needs to suppress
the communist forces led by china from dominating the world, that’s why he
masterminded his new strategy “US pivot towards asia” which received warm
welcome by all the democratic asian countries in the region. The asian countries
that borders china such as Burma,Vietnam, cambodia are either military backed
government or autotharian regime. You can see how bad influences communist
state like china has exerted on its neigbours countries. Communist regime in
china even extend their bad influences to countries like malaysia where the
malaysia government cooperated with the communist regime in china to enact new
cyber law 114A to prosecute and torture those NGO malaysian bloggers who just
posted their negative comments about china on the internet to death in secret

The strong points of the Red army in china is that they
have a very strong ground troops where they have a total 1.7 milion strong
ground forces, but the Red army in china are much much weaker in Naval and air
power. That’s why the Red army in china still unable to take by Taiwan by
forces during the chinese civil war in china in the 20th century
because the taiwan straits serves as a garrison to hold back the Red army in
mainland china from launching military invasion on taiwan. President obama is
just like the “Green lantern” in the Hollywood movie where no evil shall escape
his sight. Obama sensed the weak points and the intention of the Red army in
china to retake Taiwan by military forces, that’s why he masterminded his new
strategy “Air-Sea battle concept” which serves as a deterrence to the Red army
in china from launching military invasion on taiwan and its neighbours
countries who have maritime disputes with china in the south Asia sea because
Red army in china is very strong in ground forces but relatively much much
weaker in naval and air forces. If not because of the taiwan straits which serve
as the garrison that separates the mainland china and taiwan, probably taiwan
already fallen in the hands of the communists during the chinese civil war in
        china in the 20th century.

Got to love how liberals are already concerned with 2016 when the nation has yet to survive Obama. The second term of Obama is when the American people learn they should have called ObamaCare the unaffordable care act. We are going to see massive tax increases, and no they will certainly not just impact the top earners. Gas and heating oil will continue to rise as an unstable Middle East brings uncertainty to the market. Although Obama did state that under his plan energy prices would naturally skyrocket so maybe liberals find this a good thing. Now Obama says it is time for Cap and Trade, which you know makes Al Gore happy but that will only mean every American will pay more both in taxes and the cost of almost everything. The value of the dollar is going to continue to decline as our massive debt will just lead to more printing as those willing to borrow shrink in numbers. Of course declines in our dollar can only mean inflation is right around the corner. Funny how giddy liberals are about 2016, when there are 4 long years in between that could prove disastrous. This country might really need Middle Class Joe Biden running for president in 2016, just so we all have something to laugh about. I wouldn't put it past Biden to come out say look at the mess the previous administration left for me to clean up.

How elitist. You assume that just because people vote DNC they are of a lower intellectual capacity than you? Could you then please explain the little gem that for example professors tend to be more liberal? Or say maybe people like Buffett who I am pretty sure has a greater net worth than you (or everyone commenting here combined for that matter).

Or are you simply equating those who get something from the Federal Govt in the way of financial support as being less intelligent and more likely to vote DNC? If so exactly what is the difference between that and selfish wealthy people supporting a GOP candidate who represents THEIR best interest in not wanting to get rid of certain tax breaks (e.g. ridiculously low Capital Gains tax rates)? Are the votes of poorer people somehow less meaningful because they disagree with your personal stance?

Personally I didn't vote DNC but to be brutally honest I think there are an equal number of dunces voting for both sides. And an equal number of people of dubious knowledge running for both parties. As someone commented above, maybe if we get lucky enough a viable 3rd party candidate will appear.

JK 1963 - Oh please! You can't do better than that?

Chris Christie - are you kidding? But he's reasonable and reasoning. That means there's no way he'll be the Republican nominee unless what remains of the thinking branch of the GOP regains control of their party and it sure doesn't look like that's likely to happen anytime soon, if ever.

Patience...grasshopper. One will only have to wait a short time until the locust's eat all the grasses and expose the snakes in the field.

Then we can easily identify those that are poisonous. Time is our friend as time will expose the truth.

I don't actually think Joe Biden will run in 2016, but I would be supportive of him if he chose to do so and picked a good running mate. Who knows, it could be Chris Christie. He may be jumping from the GOP ship soon.

But seriously I cannot think of another Republican I would consider. Hillary yes, but I am waiting to see the outcome of the Inquisition on Benghazi. The same people that gave us the greatest clown show ever( called the 2012 Republican Primaries) dare call any Democrat a buffoon? Is it any wonder they deny evolution? They're still hanging out in banana trees using one hand to scratch their butts and the other to play with their toes.

Well, as I recall, the highlight of the VP debate was when Joe Biden reminded Paul Ryan that he twice requested and thanked Biden for giving Ryan's state of Wisconsin some of the stimulus money, even though Ryan continually called it the "failed" stimulus package.

                American,

Think again...in fact, the Demcrats have lost alot of the support that they enjoyed in 2008. That "fan" base has now defected to being independents. The Democrats should be very worried in 2016. I say let Biden run...it would be a gift to the Republicans (or God willing...) would finally open the door to an independent candidate running for office...

Although I like and respect Mr. Biden, I think his age (much as I hate to use that as a criteria) and somewhat overly-folksy style might be a double whammy.

I cite both in regard to President Reagan, which he was able to use the latter to overcome the former. I don't know if Mr. Biden could do so, despite his being more qualified than President Reagan was for the office, vis-a-vis Mr. Biden's public service knowledge and experience both being greater than was President Reagan's were at the time he became president.

But more to the point, riding the coattails of a popular incumbent isn't enough to make you the best choice the party has to offer as presidential material.

I again cite the Reagan presidency and what followed: President George H.W. Bush. Had he not run against Mr. Dukakis, while riding on the Reagan popularity, his election may arguably not have been possible.

But there's one thing about Joe Biden, there's 100% chance he will say something to piss off a whole bunch of people all at the same time.

Probably won't matter. If the American public sees Biden as a continuation of the Obama "Federal government as Santa Claus" policies, he is electable. That's the ONLY thing he has going for him, but it may be all he needs.

I did not "imply" that anyone who doesn't agree with the vile-liberal platform is foaming at the mouth.

My words were "My guess is that the ones here that are foaming at the mouth the most, are the ones that have never done one decent thing for their country, their state, or even their own small community, in their entire mediocre lives."

Doesn't include everyone. Just those that are foaming at the mouth the most. And I imagine I am right.

There is a whole generation of people like my father and mother (now in their 80's, who both served in the Air Force, that are Democrats and also own guns. They hope for stricter gun laws too and have voiced their opinions in favor of it for years now. My mother and sister both marched in the Million Mom March in 2000 in Washington, D.C.

It might behoove those who see blood everytime someone mentioned gun control that the vile liberal party you dislike so much also has decent men and women who own guns and want reasonable gun laws too.

It is probably a sure bet that the Bidens will not be accepting any dinner invitations from the Clinton's between now and then unless Dr. Biden is allowed to take a chemistry set to test the food.

I personally think it will be nearly impossible for old uncle Joe to actually get elected. 1) he is old 2) he is white and 3) he is a he with a she spouse and unless Barney Frank jumps out of old uncle Joe's closet he will still be seen as the enemy.

I suppose the biggest insult the Democratic Party could offer the Clintons would be for Old Uncle Joe or John Kerry to run for President in 2012. It seems that Barack is setting the stage for a battle royal between the three. He is still dividing the American People it just seems that now it is much closer to home.

Just remember W was elected twice. That means the Democrats couldn't come up with anyone to run successfully against W of all people. No reason to believe the Dems can't repeat that performance, just like the Republicans did the last two rounds.

I would say Hillary is the person to beat at this point. For the Rep. to have a shot they need to find a candidate who can BS with the best of them. Give money out hand over fist. Talk about taxing the hell out of the rich. Talk about going after those evil corps.. Be pro abortion, pro gay marriage, pro gays in the military, pro open borders & maybe even a pro basketball player. Their other choice is to tell the truth about what needs to be done to get our ass out of this bind we're in. On second thought I think they would get laughed at if they tried that. It has been proved that being honest about our situation does not work. Go the BS way or loose again.

How about these comments: "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean." Biden joked, for instance, about how "you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent." I wonder what he meant by those comments. Does he think black people are dirty and does he think only Indians own 7-11's? He must think Collin Powell is stupid. I think he should make a career change and become a stand up comedian. Maybe go on SNL. Too bad In Living Color isnt on anymore, he'd be awesome on that show. Then he can say all the stupid stuff his heart desires.

And furthermore, all those Leftist, old hatters are so stuck in their vacuum of Elitist, Ideology they are so out of touch with the average American!

Can We The Girls ever get a fair shake of anything?

I would've voted for Mrs. Clinton back in 2008, now not so much, her health worries me.

But Biden??? hahahaha oh hell no! I pray for President Obama's safety and well being every day for the sole fact that the thought of Biden taking over scares the beejebus outta me.

I think it's an ulterior motive for people to choose running mates like these, they know no one will assassinate them for fear of the VP's taking over would be worse.

The Republicans can't stand it. Let me put it simply so that you can understand: YOUR DAY IS OVER FOREVER. You let the radical, extremist, so-called "Tea Party" kill ANY chance that your party will EVER have at winning, as long as the party DOES NOT follow Republican conservatism. I would advise you all to write, tweet, e-mail, phone, and in general, contact your party and tell them to get back to Republican Idealism rather than taking, and following, radical extremist ideals. As long as the Republicans follow this line of thinking, their numbers will continue to decrease until there is NO Republican party at all. I would venture to say, by the comments I have seen here and on other blogs, that most that profess to be Republicans today, have NO idea what a Republican actually even is. That all being said, it won't matter WHO the Democratic party puts up to run in the next election. Whether it is Joe, Hillarary, or Bozo The Clown, the nation has seen what 8 years of arrogance does to a nation by what was displayed by the Bush/Cheney ticket and it will NOT happen again in any near future in this universe. In my estimation, the Republican party WANTS to lose, otherwise they would get back to basics and run on the actual values with which the Republican party was built on. I know, I WAS a republican and KNOW what those values were.... As of right now, I would vote for Biden no matter who his running mate is because I simply do not EVER want to see this Great Nation RAPED like it was under Bush EVER again.

Ozzie, I don't believe that's it. Sarah Palin wasn't running for the "Octagenarian Playboy Skank of the Year" award... she was being touted as a potential president of the USA. Big difference. It's not what was on the outside of her head we shunned and feared, it's what was lacking on the inside.

Biden probably will not run, but he will start an exploratory committee and start raising funds. Just so he can hire family members, close friends, and anyone else he owes and pay them huge sums between now and when he decides not to run. Joe will figure out a way to benefit from any money that remains.

Also if what you say is true then they would have a problem with Michelle Obama and Dr. Biden. It has nothing to do with the looks and more to do with the personality and/or brains behind the mask, as it were.

Catman? Do you mean like the "Welfare to Work" program, already in place all over the country? http://www.mdrc.org/welfare-work-program-benefits-and-costs

Here's the problem as I see it. These programs operate silently, quietly, behind the sceenes. They need to trumpet every succes! Every person who goes through their program and is either re-trained or seeks further education... to become a contributing member of society again...that is a success! It is $$$ well invested and US Citizens need to know it's not just some huge sinkhole we throw money into. So why don't they advertise and report out on their successes?

Instead....what we see is the Welfare "myth" being perpetuated that Welfare if a lifetime free ride.

Are there people abusing the system? Yes, there are....but do we punish EVERYONE because some a__hole took advantage of us? No.

The problem with your Welfare Program is, regardless of the stats that are manipulated to promote it, no matter how beneficial and effective it may appear to be, in the end, it promotes the concept that people and their earning are the property of others or the state. No one should be more deserving of the fruits of another's labors than their own family.

When any person's earnings are forcibly taken for the benefit of another without any say in the matter, then they are but a slave to that system. I would venture human charity is much greater than you believe it to be... and much greater than the state will ever concede.

                                          JT-456250

I work around those on welfare, so I see the repercussions first hand.

They don't 'report success' because most employers who hire welfare moms do so for the tax benefit and they quickly lay them off after tax season.

Your post is so not true. Either they get a job, any job, it doesn't matter if they get a living wage or not. If (and that's a big IF) they get to keep most of their benefits. Yes, food stamps, section 8 housing, babysitters are paid for by welfare, gas to and from work, everything. If not, they get to sign up AGAIN for the program, over and over, until they (the parent) runs the time clock out. If they run the time clock out, their money is gone, but not their kids and they still keep the benefits for them until they are 18.

As far as 'retraining', unless the Mom needs to obtain a GED, they DO NOT encourage going to school or obtaining 'retraining', at all. In fact, if you sign up and try to go to school, they will threaten to cut off your benefits.

Welfare to Work is a waste of time joke...

I am sorry to read that you personally think it is a "waste of time joke" to help people when they need it most. I fundamentally disagree. We have a friend who is a Social Worker in our State's Welfare of Work program. She and her co-workers take it VERY seriously, and have had much greater success than you might want to give them credit for. Given a "hand up" most people prefer independance and will work like crazy to achieve it. They just need a little help.

Isn't our form of taxation akin to belonging to a "club"? Tennis club, Country Club? Flying Club? You pay in some dues, and enjoy the benefits, right? And, you have a vote, don't you? ...our form of government provides SO MANY benefits to US Citizens. Roads, bridges, clean water, clean-ish air (depending on where you live) Police and fire protection, Coast Guard, a military that is second to none and all manner of infrastructure and controls put in place which allow us to be successful. Do I agree with every choice our Congress makes in spending? No. But I would say, our form of govenment, even with it's myriad flaws, is still one of the best systems in the world.

I am in violent agreement with your final sentence...."I would venture human charity is much greater than you believe it to be... and much greater than the state will ever concede." No other nation on earth has more folks with generous hearts than the USA. You are so right here....

Maybe Catman should help some of the unemployed find jobs. I do not know how old Catman is, but things have changed drastically over the last 12 years or so. Almost everything is being outsourced. NAFTA was not so wonderful after all. DO NOT BLAME NAFTA ON GEORGE W. BUSH. The signing of that wonderful document took place before he was in office. I had one of my friends say the unemployed people should take whatever jobs are offered them, even if they only pays $5.00 per hour. Why? They would then be spending all of their money on gas to get to and from work if they lived over 10 or 15 miles away from the job. Also, there would be taxes coming out of that $5.00 per hour. I just happened to be at the "Y" that evening when this friend said that. I figured just play dumb and ignore her. Sometimes it's best to stay away from politics and religion when you're with friends.

Catman is 57years of age!! My take is that there are many jobs available that have not even been considered. We could line the southern Border with people to keep the "Invasion" from Mexico from happening. What about using them to help keep our cities free from litter etc. Security for our schools? Give these folks a real job not just a monthly check! A person gains alot of self esteem when they can work! As far as unemplyed, I spent 2 years out of work after the economy went flat. I truly know what its like to go from riches to rags overnight. I percevered and finally found a great company to work for! I am not special just motivated! Anyone can get a better job if they assert themselves! It starts by finding things for unemployed people to do for that monthly grant. Earning your way equates to paying taxes and contributing to our Country! NO FREE RIDES!!

JT-456250: "When any person's earnings are forcibly taken for the benefit of another without any say in the matter, then they are but a slave to that system" Isn't our form of taxation akin to belonging to a "club"? Not always. Many pay into Medicare but are unable to use it because they are single. People draw from Social Security and Medicare without ever having to pay into it. We pay billions to provide for people in this country illegally while our own citizens do without. Then there are the corporate bailouts which benefit few beyond the private firms and their investors and employees, all of which resulted from poor management and business plans that still continue to lose millions and should have signaled their end, not a need for our tax dollars.

As for roads, bridges, clean water and the like... of course, but not when we've invested to the point we can no longer maintain what we have, build simply as a means of garnering votes in specific districts, or wind up with a situation where our ever decreasing farm land is destroyed while inner cities crumble. And certainly not when the vast majority of the polluters of our environment do so with the state's blessing after paying a nominal fee, and without any regard for land owners downstream.

For the most part, people within their communities know what is best for them and what is needed, not some politician or bean counter on the other side of the country fenced into a different reality by the belt-way. Being part of that community does indeed include contributing to the communal cause, but it does not necessarily dictate a need to provide roads, bridges, or even soup kitchens in another region of the country... at least not without a voice in the matter.

Unfortunately, the state (our elected officials), many of whom have exempted themselves from the laws they pass to regulate us, have also taken our voice. Often giving it instead to the special interests that feed them.

Republicans best focus rebuilding their image rather than thinking Joe Biden will be an easy opponent. You may think Joe is stupid but come election time he's been kicking Republicans in the ass for more than 40 years. As the old saying goes --- be careful what you wish for because you just may get it.

Sure he does....as does anyone with passion and purpose. He's a very decent person. Joe can be REALLY funny sometimes...mixed metaphors and all, but he's basically a caring, decent and genuine person.

Too bad they don't give people tests to see how bright they are before they hire them. I've been an executive secretary, legal secretary, medical transcriptionist, administrative assistant and real estate broker. I've had to pass a test prior to getting hired for any of the positions I've had. My ex-husband was in service, so whenever he was transferred, I followed. I always managed to get a job after passing the test for the position. Sometimes the test took two to three hours, sometimes 10 minutes, but I always got the position. Now, it is who you know not what you know. So, we get buffoons in government just like in other jobs.

jarhead..get serious. Rubio..Christie, neither one of those fools can pull the splintered base of the GOP together. There are more Democrats who would back Christie, then his own party would. And Rubio.. folks may like him, but he isn't likely to get the Hispanic vote, until he moderates a bit on his social issues. And that only turns off the hard core right. He can't win either way. Damned if he does, damed if he don't. It isn't him..its the fractured party. far right teabaggers against moderate conservatives. No unity! those two won't get the nod. They'll be right where they are now in 2016. NJ Gov and Fla senator. Trapped by thier own party.

Maybe a Hillary and Biden ticket would be good. Biden can be a permanent VP for that matter. He's actually a good guy, and unlike others (I will refrain from mentioning, but of the other party), he has more ethical behavior, he's smart, and he actually knows geography and physiology. I don't think he has the stamina for the presidency, but Hillary could give it a good shot.

Biden has so far served very well as vice president. He would have a good chance in 2016 but then, so will Hillary. I wonder if the REpubs/Baggers will be able to come up with a viable candidate by then? So far everyone has been poor, sick jokes. They do have one very good prospect amongst their ranks, but they will never run him - he's not to the liking of the ultra-cons. I speak of Jon Huntsman.

It all depends on how much government free stuff Biden can promise.

Actually you are so wrong about me on so many points

I am far from being a "typical liberal" - I vote the candidate and the issues. I have voted for both democrats and for republicans. Who I voted for had nothing to do with liberal or conservative - it was and is issue driven.

And I take issue with incomprehensible idiots.

Fixed it for you. For example, the opportunity to make huge spending cuts and small revenue increases were rejected (like 4:1 cuts to spending) and the downgraded the US credit rating (with pride), which causes the deficit to increase.

So the logical conclusion is to continue to add to the national debt and yearly deficit...great logic there...get back to us when you learn how to balance spending with income.

His stupid sneers gave the impression that he thought he was better and smarter than anybody. I never have liked people that went around with sneers on their faces. Too old or not, he was a big turnoff for VP as far as I'm concerned.

Ha, let's hope so. If the second Obama term doesn't remind Americans of why they distrust Democrats, a Biden administration definitely will.

@ Porter-Oh yes, the GOP does love it's draft dodging sons of privilege...Bush, Cheney, Romney. YUCK. Biden's son was in the military and Biden was the only current congressmen who even HAD someone serving our country for a while. Most of all, Biden is very intelligent. I would vote for him! He will never be insanely stupid like George Bush was. Or end up as a God on another planet with 1000 wives, like Romney plans.....
