Vice President Biden, Mr. Chief Justice, Members of the United States Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:
Each time we gather to inaugurate a president, we bear witness to the enduring strength of our Constitution. We affirm the promise of our democracy. We recall that what binds this nation together is not the colors of our skin or the tenets of our faith or the origins of our names. What makes us exceptional - what makes us American - is our allegiance to an idea, articulated in a declaration made more than two centuries ago:
President Barack Obama delivers his second inaugural speech, discussing how as a country we will move together, and that "America's possibilities are limitless."
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."
Today we continue a never-ending journey, to bridge the meaning of those words with the realities of our time. For history tells us that while these truths may be self-evident, they have never been self-executing; that while freedom is a gift from God, it must be secured by His people here on Earth. The patriots of 1776 did not fight to replace the tyranny of a king with the privileges of a few or the rule of a mob. They gave to us a Republic, a government of, and by, and for the people, entrusting each generation to keep safe our founding creed.
For more than two hundred years, we have.
Through blood drawn by lash and blood drawn by sword, we learned that no union founded on the principles of liberty and equality could survive half-slave and half-free. We made ourselves anew, and vowed to move forward together.
Together, we determined that a modern economy requires railroads and highways to speed travel and commerce; schools and colleges to train our workers.
Together, we discovered that a free market only thrives when there are rules to ensure competition and fair play.
Together, we resolved that a great nation must care for the vulnerable, and protect its people from life's worst hazards and misfortune.
Through it all, we have never relinquished our skepticism of central authority, nor have we succumbed to the fiction that all society's ills can be cured through government alone. Our celebration of initiative and enterprise; our insistence on hard work and personal responsibility, are constants in our character.
But we have always understood that when times change, so must we; that fidelity to our founding principles requires new responses to new challenges; that preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action. For the American people can no more meet the demands of today's world by acting alone than American soldiers could have met the forces of fascism or communism with muskets and militias. This generation of Americans has been tested by crises that steeled our resolve and proved our resilience. A decade of war is now ending. An economic recovery has begun. My fellow Americans, the oath I have sworn before you today, like the one recited by others who serve in this Capitol, was an oath to God and country, not party or faction - and we must faithfully execute that pledge during the duration of our service. But the words I spoke today are not so different from the oath that is taken each time a soldier signs up for duty, or an immigrant realizes her dream. My oath is not so different from the pledge we all make to the flag that waves above and that fills our hearts with pride.
They are the words of citizens, and they represent our greatest hope.
You and I, as citizens, have the power to set this country's course.

Why does the government keep referring to people who receive SS and medicare as takers. This is earned by putting their money into it, investing into their retirement and healthcare. It comes out of their checks each payday. Yes, there are people on it that shouldnt be. Clean up the fraud and keep your political slimy fingers out of it. BUT IT IS EARNED INCOME NOT A HANDOUT. I hear you and it's a nice commentary, but things are not what they appear to be. Yes, entitlements are commitments we all have made to our fellow citizens - and investments they have made through their work - and these should be honored.
In my view, there is no choice. And I think everyone recognizes those who paid in deserve to get something back. And that those who are incapable of paying in due to age or infirmity should have a safety net. How much, to whom, for what and how long are legitimate starting places to further this discussion.
That said, entitlement programs are fundamentally flawed. Far more benefits have been paid out than were ever contributed AND much more is expected to be paid out while the funds for these programs are not there. And just like a Ponzi scheme - these programs now totally rely on growing numbers of new taxpayers/participants to fund the benefits for the existing participants. Benefits the likes of which the new taxpayers/participants are likely to have no or little chance at getting themselves.
So, while I agree that we made a deal and should stick with it, we absolutely cannot stay with the same deal for all new taxpayers/participants. It's not fair to the new participants. Nor is it fair to taxpayers to expect to continue to pay for the shortfall without fixing the underlying problem.
Rightly people are taking issue with this process. Unfortunately, there is no civil discussion. No, anyone with a different opinion is rich and conservative and thinks old people are trash. And anyone who wants to maintain benefits is liberal and stupid and doesn't understand what it takes to grow jobs.
Somewhere in the middle is a fair solution. But the folks in government have found that merely discussing the possibility of modifying these programs is a powerful lever to perpetuate their power. So the debate is not about what programs need to be funded to help to those beneficiaries most in need - it's how to we use this to maximize our political position.
That in a nutshell is why people are so mad. It's not reasonable to cut off those in need - but we certainly can draw a tighter circle around those who are getting something AND we can revise the pricing for those who wish to participate in the future AND we can be open and honest about fixing a problem we all know is there.
Instead, we have politicos continually spinning the party lines to the detriment of all of us. There is clearly a middle ground, but there is apparently more value for our elected officials in perpetuating this game for their own personal reasons than in resolving it for the benefit of the country.
In my view, the country will continue to be divided until someone steps up and takes responsibility for those things over which he has no control, but which cry out for leadership without regard for political fallout.

You make a lot of good points, but in addition to speaking to the hard facts about the input revenue and output payments, we also need to consider the less tangible impacts these programs have had to make sure we don't jump from the frying pan into the fire. For example, for decades ss and medicare removed enormous paralysis caused by fear of iving out old age in poverty which allowed the last few generations to generously contribute to programs that wouldn't benefit them directly - educational institutions, medical and aerospace research, long-term infrastructure projects. This represents the contract between the generations - younger citizens (pre-school, students and young parents) all take and benefit from the education, medical care and advances, police, fire and military protection that older citizens "give" (pay for). In turn in future years they will have the opportunity to "give back" by contributing to the social security and medical care that those older citizens will eventually need for a secure retirement. As a result our nation has thrived. If this "contract between the generations" is now broken by narrow minded interests, it will be much more impactful than most have given thought to.
Even now, because of diminution of ss benefits, raising retirement age and fears about losing medicare benefits, older citizens are working longer and therefore holding onto jobs that younger people can't get. In the future younger citizens may want to eliminate social security but then they should expect to have to pay more for their own and their children's education and medical care andas they struggle to establish themselves. Social programs like food stamps, unemployment payments, and worker retraining funds also have given hope to many and contributed to reducing the type of criminal acts that desperate people have committed in previous hard times.
Thus even "givers" have benefited from these programs in ways that need to be recognized. So please include these less tangible effects of eliminating these programs in your considerations.
Fired up - your points are solid. The "contract between generations" that you recognize is particularly important.
We need those relying on programs to have a decent standard of living, yet we need to ensure that newer retirees continue to contribute - while transitioning to them to strategies in line with returns that are attainable with the money they pay in.
But these key programs are now so actuarially imbalanced, particularly with rising health care costs, that simply cost shifting will not work. So while they need to remain intact, they need to be re-structured.
This problem is many decades in the making. Many people rely on them, many years of contributions are required. Therefore, changes to these programs by their very nature cannot be swift.
I think workers working longer is just the price of higher costs. They impact everyone and aren't going away anytime soon. To boot older workers out of their jobs isn't fair considering we are asking them to cover more of their expenses in retirement.
Even with a concerted effort, the entitlement situation is not likely to be remedied for at least a generation - twenty years. And that's probably a good thing because we don't have the stockpile of cash to count on having just come out of a recession with the middle class bearing the brunt - not just of these programs - but all governmental spending. And we need to transition people from outmoded plans in need of reform to something else.
Determining what exactly that "something else" is needs to be a priority. Unfortunately as noted, I think the ability to manipulate this issue strikes to the heart of the big problem as the farthest ends of the political spectrum - on both sides - continue to hamstring the futures of a majority of Americans. And that dynamic has to change. And it has change in a hurry.

People give hundreds of billions to churches and charity organizations every year. I think they manage the funds better then can the federal government. Example: look at the 'War on Poverty' launched in the 1960's when poverty was 15% of the American population (1965). Trillions (yes with a 'T') of tax dollars have gone into programs to 'fight' poverty, but where are we today? Answer: 15% And how much of those taxpayer dollars were wasted on failed programs that were kept going by politicians who were basically just buying votes by keeping those projects funded?
No matter what the government does, there will always be a portion of any population that will be, for lack of a better term; lazy. I much rather have me decide where to donate money then have a politician who is seeking reelection decide where it goes.

I just have never gotten the claims that churches and private charity are more efficient at dispensing aid. I don't see how this could be and certainly have seen no evidence. I know of quite a few charities that spend off the top 25-75% of their "contributions" to fund raise and pay overhead costs. Often little goes to those who need it. With all of your complaints about the "undeserving' getting government aid - how strict do you think churches and many other organizations are with background checks to make sure those they are aiding are legitimate? For some substantial contributions go to funding lawyers to fight prosecution fraud and criminal behavior. Many of the most important causes are not "glitzy" enough so money goes to those that are. Certainly I have little or no say in how the $$ I contribute are spent. There is little or no auditing and when fraud is occurring there are few or no consequences.
I know what you're going to say all of this can be said to some extent about the government programs but at least I have some say (voting rights) and there is some required oversight.

He just keeps on forgetting that we are in a recession , have been for five years , have almost 8 % unemployment and are already 16 and one half trillion in the hole . The average interest rate is 5 % for America and we are nowhere near that mark . It is being held down by the Federal reserve and eventually go up . That 16 1/2 trillion will be 20 trillion very quickly with a normal imnterest rate . The Federl reserve is doing nothing more thanprinting money to keep the interest rate down [ Stimulus ] .

When will it get through his head that his biggest task is to cut government , balance the budget and pair down the deficit . Picking winners and losers is what government has done for centuries, but even visionaries don't see perfectly and you'll never get anywhere without taking some risks, so yes there have been some mistakes. When has the government picked winners that led our nation to thrive and become a world leader over the last century? Try public education, public libraries, conservation of natural resources, medical and technology research (children's vaccine and health programs, countless disease treatments, computer technology and the internet, satellite technology, military technology), the space program, clean air fighting facism and communism.

I saw all these great Inaugural images on television - the President, the White House, legions waving American flags on the Mall - and thought to myself, it's a great thing for America when a President is sworn in. It signals both the renewal of the country and the principles we hold dear and the advent of optimism that we all working together can make things better.
The good feelings lasted as long as it took me to read the actual words of his Inaugural address. In clearly the worst Presidential inauguration speech of my lifetime, I heard not a call to nation and country, but to political sycophants and ideology. It was not uplifting and energizing, but dogmatic and cynical. It was pandering run amok.
For a President who claims to want to work together with his political opponents, this pseudo-olive branch was nothing more than a call to arms. A prescription for a continued logjam in government fueled by a distorted world view. A fundamental mischaracterization of a modest election victory based on popularity for a social movement founded on his core liberal political philosophy.
The fact that President Obama chose to advocate his world view - without accounting for the 50% of the people who don't buy it - was at once galling and frightening. Because this act portends continued misjudgments about the America that actually exists and ensures that whatever he does will continue to be in furtherance of this distorted perspective.
If he had even made a modest step toward addressing an alternate viewpoint, it probably would have made a difference. Instead we got a superior tone and air. Alienating those who expected some modest deference isn't exactly the best way to get off on the right foot if your goal is to take your rightful place in history by leading a united America into the future. But it certainly is something we've come to expect from a twice elected President who cares more about his constituency than his country.

JB- you don't really want him to do what he claims. He's had to fight an obstructionist Congress on everything. The dangerous mob is in the House where every crack-pot congressman acts like he has to be the most intractable voice in the room or he'll lose his base. Obama's "mob" turned out more voters, so he gets to try to sail this ship. The current polarized climate has turned compromise into a weakness. What we need is real leadership. Reagan & Tip O'Neal managed to compromise. But for that to happen both had to put aside their partisan fears, have the courage to take a hard position, and they had to actually talk to eachother to make it happpen. Boehner won't even meet face-to-face with Obama.

I have a friend that owns a manufacturing firm and employs about 155 workers . About 100 workers were covered under a system where 50% paid by company and 50% not . The other 50 or so decided they didn't want coverage . In the new systejm then he has to cover them or pay a huge fine . That cost will be about 500K [ 500,000.00 dollars ] . We will become a welfare state where a lot of the seed money to expand nw business and create technology will be taken by the government , redistributed and you will have very little growth in our economy . It will get worse when China decides to ask for its payment on our debt .

I was impressed to see that he recognized that we are a REPUBIC not a DEMOCRACY - but he treats is like an ordinary democracy. The founding fathers restricted voting for a reason. By now it should be self-evident why they did. I wouldn't make the same restrictions they did, but if you are living on public funds you should not be able to vote yourself continued income or a raise. One of the founding fathers pointed this out as a caveat.
Obvious that there are many here whose post suggest they feel they are Americans, yet they are the ones who divide our Nation. You are traitors as far as I am concerned...I would vote to promote equality and you vote to condemn all who disagree with you. Your eyes are closed, your minds are closed, your hatred prevails and I am left astounded by your lack of compassion for fellow citizens, proof that the divisive nature will be a fact of life in the future. No one man could ever bring together groups who behave as oil and water...a truly noble aspiration but one I fear is beyond possibility; judgement day we shall all discover the truth.

Do we really expect anything new from President Obama? As usual he's all bark with no bite. Hell, when he was a senator look at his voting record. It was a majority of "did not vote". Democrats and republicans, same @!$%#s just different bumper stickers. They don't look out for our interests just theirs. Hell they voted on only having a two party system period between the two of them. Is Harry Reid really going to to anything about gun control? My guess is no because a majority of his campaign funds come from the NRA. You never bite the hand that feeds you.
As for gay marriage, that should not be left for the federal government to decide and mandate. It should be left for the individual states to decide. Same with healthcare. Can any one name other than the U.S. military what agency under federal government rule that is prospering? I can't they are all on the brink of financial failure.
Until we can break the Democrat and Republican party rule and lobbying, nothing will change.
Voiceinmyhead; at what cost determines equality? Tax the rich? They only increase the price of the products they produce to make up their loss, who suffers? Provide health care for all citizens across the U.S., more patients = longer wait times for appointments, shortages of doctors and other health professionals, the hospitals hire new staff, who pays? You and I my friend. The little story about how we're not going to tax the middle class and the poor, of course not, but let them pay more in groceries, doctor visits, internet services, cable tv, utilities, cost for repairs, tires, etc... as the rates rise. But hey, they were true to their word, they didn't raise your taxes.
I encourage others to believe in this pipe dream if it fits their fancy. The country I was born into required loyalty, courage, hard work and determination to get ahead in life. We didn't believe in killing unborn children, and still don't. We didn't believe in government handouts until it was the absolute last resort. Then it was only temporary until we got back to work. Becoming a U.S. citizen required applying for a proper legal Visa. Our devout religious upbringing taught us that we were created for procreation. He created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. So you take your little equality speech and twist any ethical and immoral ideology you so desire into our Constitution to meet your acceptable behavior of today's society, just don't expect all of us to sit at your campfire and sing his praises. I'll be at the firing range honing my skills on my semi automatic.
