Joe Biden was sworn in to a second term as the Vice President of the United States on Sunday morning, taking his oath from Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor -- the first Hispanic in American history to administer an oath of office.
Biden personally selected Sotomayor, who is also the fourth woman to administer an oath, to conduct the brief ceremony at the vice president's residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.
By law, the president and vice president must be sworn in on Jan. 20. Because that date falls on a Sunday this year, both men take their formal oaths today, but will hold the traditional longer public ceremony tomorrow.
Biden's swearing-in was originally scheduled to be held shortly before the president's, near noon Sunday. But Sotomayor's previous commitment to a book signing in New York City prompted officials to move the event earlier in the day.
"It's an incredible honor to have Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor swear me in," Biden said in a statement. "I believed strongly that she would make a great Justice, and it was one of the greatest pleasures of my career to be involved in her selection to the Court. From the first time I met her, I was impressed by Justice Sotomayor's commitment to justice and opportunity for all Americans, and she continues to exemplify those values today. Above all, I'm happy for the chance to be sworn in by a friend - and someone I know will continue to do great things."
After the short swearing-in, Biden again thanked Sotomayor personally, explaining to the small group of guests the reason for the early timing of the event.
Biden took the oath on a family Bible bearing a Celtic cross. It has been in the Biden family since 1893.
Cabinet members attending the ceremony included Attorney General Eric Holder and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. He was joined on stage by his family, including wife Dr. Jill Biden and his three children.

A great big sign of relief from me when both are sworn in. I'm so glad our nation voted the sane people in again. However, we have work to do because Republican in North midwestern and some Eastern states are trying to rig the election through the electoral college. They've already rigged their districts to come up with Republican majorities regardless of who shows up to vote. Something I think needs to be dealt with in the courts by the citizens who are not represented in proper proportions. We have laws against that.
I consider V.P. J. Biden the perfect V.P.

How fortunate we are that President Obama was re-elected and it is his inauguration we will be watching/attending and not someone else's. The pain of him and his family leaving the White House on Monday would have been too hard to bear if he had lost.
And as we watch the public ceremonies on a day in which we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., on a day when Medgar Ever's widow will deliver the invocation, we will once again take a moment and reflect on the wonder of our history and those who came before us who fought without hesitation for a country we could and should be. The United States of America.
In reading over the years about past presidents leaving the White House for the last time, some images leave a lasting impression.
Two Presidents - ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL
A woman said of President James Monroe, upon meeting him on New Years Day 1825 at the White House:
"He is tall and well formed. His dress plain and in the old style ... His manner was quiet and dignified. From the frank, honest expression of his eye ... I think he well deserves the encomium passed upon him by the great Jefferson, who said, 'Monroe was so honest that if you turned his soul inside out there would not be a spot on it.'
Yet William Seale wrote: In his appearance, James Monroe seemed less the leader of a new age than a ghost from the old. The last President to have participated in the Revolution, he still powdered his hair and wore smallclothes, when long trousers had been the fashion for some years. His shirts were ruffled, his shoes buckled in silver, and he wore hose which, like his suits, were black. Monroe's resemblance to George Washington grew more intriguing as the American Revolution grew more remote and the principles of 1776 took on new meaning.
Our 5th president (1817-1825), Monroe fought in the Battle of Trenton where he was wounded. The doctors were unable to remove the bullet and he carried the bullet in his shoulder for the rest of his life. He encamped with the Continental Army at Valley Forge. In the famous painting depicting George Washington crossing the Delaware, it is thought to be Lt. James Monroe in the painting holding up the American flag.
And so in 1825 President James Monroe, a patriot with a long and distinguished career dedicated to the founding of a nation, walked away quietly, attired in the clothing of another era, closing forever the door on the Founding Fathers' generation in the White House. A generation that fought for a government residing in citizenry rather than a sanctioned monarchy.
All men are created equal.
John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson were bitter enemies - so much so that John Q like his father before him did not attend his successor's inauguration after losing his bid for re-election. On the day before Jackson's inauguration, coaches and wagons pulled up in front of the White House and the Adams possessions were taken away. While President Adams stayed behind, his wife and family got into their coaches and left the White House for their new home in Washington DC.
John's father, John Adams, is the only Founding Father not to have owned a single slave - on principle alone. He wrote the Massachusetts Constitution, which abolished slavery in MA, he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, he was our 2nd president and the first president to reside in the White House. John Q was brought up to serve in public office; he was a scholar, a patriot, a jurist, author of the Monroe Doctrine and held diplomatic positions in Europe and Russia. He knew personally all the important men and women of the Founding Fathers' generation. Neither father nor son had a successful presidency.
Yet as we watch our current president once again take the oath of office, following in the footsteps of all those presidents before him who tried to pave the way for a more progressive, just America - sometimes succeeding, sometimes not - John Quincy Adams should be remembered. A man who held strong opinions on slavery, he believed slavery went against America's core principles of equality and freedom. He was a man with an independent mind, having for a role model his father who made an unpopular but morally correct decision - representing British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre.
One year after leaving the presidency, John Quincy Adams was elected to the House of Representatives and served 8 terms. He became known for his outspoken speeches against slavery ("Old Man Eloquent"). He was a defender of Free Speech at a time when fellow Congressmen attempted to silence him on his anti-slavery speeches. It was while in the House that he suffered a stroke and died two days later at the age of 80. He suffered his stroke shortly after making an impassioned speech against a plan to extend slavery to the western territories won in the Mexican-American War.
Congress during this time also dealt with petitions from slaves. John Q. Adams argued that the right to petition Congress was a universal right granted so that those in the weakest positions might always have a recourse to those in the most powerful. The House resolved, almost unanimously, that the right to petition one's government applied to only free white persons. Resolved, that the slaves do not possess the right of petition secured to the people of the United States by the Constitution.
Twelve years after leaving the White House Adams represented the African men on the ship Amistad in front of the United States Supreme Court. He presented his argument on two separate days, 4 hrs straight each day. The first day was 2/22- Geo. Washington's birthday. This was a case pitting property rights/maritime laws against what Adams saw as justice for all - black, white, male, female, free or slave. Inalienable rights of man. He believed strongly that slavery was a terrible evil.
When the Declaration of Independence was drafted, passages pertaining to slavery had been removed, not by Thomas Jefferson, but by Congress. The passages deleted are quite interesting, putting it seems all the blame for slavery on the King of England. Yet Thomas Jefferson while president, abolished slave trading but not slavery. The Amistad case heard before the Supreme Court was the opportunity for Adams to put the evils of slavery and property rights front and center. It was the abolitionists who met with Adams and asked that he defend these men.
Adams won the case and thus put abolitionists in a stronger position to continue their fight against slavery. Adams' belief that every person had the right to live in freedom, that they were not property to anyone was a tremendous moral victory. He was a man unfortunately before his time.
John Q had throughout his life developed an interest in horticulture and during his time in the White House he turned the White House gardens, which had been unkept, into gardens of plants and trees on both the north and south grounds. On his daily predawn walks he was able to enjoy the beautiful gardens he had created - plants, fruit trees, shrubs, hedges, vegetables, herbs, etc.
And so on this his last day in the White House, John Quincy Adams, our 6th president (1825-1829) stayed behind as his family left in late afternoon - wagons full of trunks, furniture and presidential papers. Adams then walked the White House grounds one last time to look over his gardens and when darkness began to set in, he walked away from the White House to join his family in his new home. A president leaving with so few friends, and a great many enemies, even within his own party. Who as an 8 year old child, witnessed his nation fighting in the Revolutionary War on Bunker Hill for a cause he believed in - all men are created equal. For John Quincy Adams, those words defined the United States of America and those words to him meant unequivocally that every man and woman, regardless of color of skin or religious affiliation - were equal in the eyes of the law. 100% equal.
Long after leaving the White House a lonely figure, he would put those words to the test and challenge a nation's acceptance to slavery. He would win his argument, thus helping to begin the long journey of the United States of America changing course.
. . . as the American Revolution grew more remote and the principles of 1776 took on new meaning.
All men are created equal.
Everyone in America, including the Founding Fathers, recognized the contradictions in these words. But it was John Quincy Adams who shined the brightest spotlight on them.

There is nothing left of John Quincy Adams' garden on the White House grounds. An elm tree he planted survived until the first Bush years when it had to be cut down. First Lady Barbara Bush however did plant a root cutting from the tree.

Jan 20 is the traditional date for swearing in of the winner of the November election; required by law to be held at noon local time. The public ceremony will be on Monday. Past presidents (Monroe, Taylor, Hayes, Wilson, Eisenhower, and Reagan) have had the oath administered privately with public ceremonies later.

The Constitution means what the Supreme Court says it means. Just like they found a basic right to abortions, they also found an individual right to own firearms. Again, if you don't like it, you can try to amend it. Your anger and insults probably won't accomplish that, but keep at it if you want.

Actually if some of these fools who accuse Joe Biden of being in their ranks were old enough to remember the Watergate hearings (broadcast daily on tv), they might know that ol Joe (then a junior senator of Delaware) was instrumental in bringing Tricky Dicky (another fine crooked republican president) down. The role of the Vice President has certainly changed in the recent years, and the responsibilities of this position have gained importance. It is critical Mr. Vice President that the "Political Positions" of the President be protected. The Vice President also needs to defend the "Economic Policies" of the President.
