'I did it!' Obama takes oath surrounded by family at White House

President Barack Obama was officially sworn in Sunday for his second term as president of the United States, ahead of Monday's public events.

In a small and succinct ceremony at the White House, Obama recited the constitutionally mandated oath of office for the third of four expected times during his time in office.  

Embracing his children after the oath, his younger daughter Sasha was heard to whisper “good job, Daddy!” 

"I did it!" he responded, before she observed "You didn't mess up." 

Sunday's official swearing-in, administered by Chief Justice John Roberts, was the 57th inauguration of a president in American history. 

This time, President Obama and Justice Roberts got the words right. The oath took 32 seconds inside the White House. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Wearing a dark suit and blue tie, Obama repeated the directive to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." He was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama and his daughters Sasha and Malia.  

After thanking Roberts and waving to cameras, Obama and the first family left the White House's Blue Room. He will deliver his public inaugural address Monday on the west front of the United States Capitol.

During the brief swearing-in Sunday, the first lady -- who wore a dark blue dress -- held the family Bible upon which Obama laid his hand to swear the oath. According to inaugural officials, the Bible was a gift from Mrs. Obama’s father to his mother in 1958.

When Obama first took the oath of office on Jan. 20 four years ago, he and Chief Justice John Roberts tripped up over the wording, raising concerns about whether the constitutional requirements were fulfilled to the letter of the law.  Roberts went to the White House the next day and administered it again in full. 

The short Sunday ceremony was held because the constitutionally mandated inauguration date of Jan. 20 falls on a Sunday, so Obama will take the oath a fourth and final time on Monday before hundreds of thousands of observers on the National Mall. 

America may be politically divided, but most Americans report really liking Michelle Obama, who counts helping military families among her key initiatives. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

The Monday ceremonies will include the president's inaugural address, a luncheon with the president and members  of Congress and the traditional inaugural parade and balls. 

Ahead of the ceremony, the Obama family attended church at the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church in Washington , a historic place of worship that also hosted pre-inaugural services for former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Albert Gore.

Vice President Joe Biden was officially sworn in at about 8:20 a.m. ET Sunday.

The small weekend ceremonies for both men are a bit of a historical quirk, although today's swearing-in was the seventh in history to take place on a Sunday.  The last instance occurred in 1985, when President Ronald Reagan was formally sworn in for his second term in office.

Beginning with the second inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937, new presidents and vice presidents have been sworn in on Jan. 20 due to the changes laid out in the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

(Before that, inaugurations were typically held on March 4, as directed by the 12th Amendment. But controversy over the length of the lame duck period forced that ceremony to be moved up by law).

In addition, eight vice presidents have been administered the oath of office upon the death of a president. The hastily planned ceremonies have taken place in hotels, homes and -- famously, after the death of John F. Kennedy -- aboard Air Force One. 

The oath of office for the president is set out in the Constitution.

Article II, Section 1, states as follows "Before he enter on the execution of his office, he shall take the following oath or affirmation: -- "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Traditionally, two minor changes are made. First, the president taking the oath says his name after the first word ("I, Barack Hussein Obama"). And second, the phrase "so help me God" is added at the end.

Why in the world is Obama taking the second oath on Monday does he really need to waste that much of the peoples money? Sorry thinkstraight-306257, but these things are just tradition. The parade, speech, ball, ect...all tradition. You actually have to have a public government fuction during business hours. However, the oath must be administered on the exact day prescribed in the Constitution. If we are going to argue that the Second Amendment must be adhered to, by the letter, then we have to follow the Twentieth Amendment the same way.

The federal budget deficit was $292 billion for the first two months of fiscal year 2013, $57 billion more than the shortfall recorded in October and November of last year, CBO estimates in its latest Monthly Budget Review. Revenues rose by $30 billion, or 10 percent, but outlays increased by $87 billion, or 16 percent.

Without shifts in the timing of certain payments in each year, however, outlays would have risen by only $22 billion, or 4 percent, and the deficit for the two-month period would have been about $8 billion lower this year than in fiscal year 2012, CBO estimates.

While I am no fan of Obama and realize that he has very little to do with the budget, at least the House of Representitives is doing something. That's in consideration that the Senate hasn't worked on the budget in four years. There's plenty of stories about the whole "No Budget, No Pay" extraviganza, so I won't go there. This isn't a story about that. Perhaps you should charge over to those stories for some comments.

At sixty-seven, I can honestly state, I have never been so proud of a President, than I am President Obama. After reading several of the posts here, I wonder how a man can tolerate such disrespect and down right hatred. Not only hatred, of his politics and his actions but, the obvious comments of racism and overt stupidity, some have written here.

This United States elected President Obama by a majority. He is like by over 70% of his follow citizens. President Obama is the only president to have his citizenship questioned. He has had to tolerate hateful comments, even while giving his address to the United States. And yet, President Obama has continued to care enough about this country to take the abusive language and insults, from people who could never be his intellectual equal. Some of the posters here have so much misinformation and are willing to follow, in lockstep behind the likes, of the Republican Party and Rush Limbaugh.

It is so evident that our country is lacking in educated people because so many of these post are, written by people who are failures, in their owe life. Posters like to write such vitriol words because they can remain anonymous. They can hide behind the white hoods they were over their heads or the fact, they do not have their real names and faces posted here.

So to all of you cowards, who are clutching your Bibles, your guns, your copy of the Constitution, your hate for anyone with a different look. To all of you, here me. President Obama won the election by a majority. He will leave this office, with our country in better shape, than when he took office four years ago. He will do all of us proud, even though mean-spirited, people like you, are hoping he will fail. For in your zeal, "to cut off your nose, in spite of your face," the United States will continue, to have people, who know how, to show respect, to have admiration and act decently toward, one of the best leaders, the United States of America, has ever elected, into office. I cannot wait until 2016. I will happily say, I TOLD YOU SO!

I am with you. I was born during the Eisenhower Administration and I have never been prouder of a President in all these years.

Just reading these hate-filled, bigoted, bitter, sore losers' posts makes me even prouder of our President, Vice President, their families, and his Administration. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to try and lead this country with so many ignorant and angry people constantly opposing everything you do.

I pray for the President every day that he will continue to have the strength to lead this nation forward. Reading the news from around the world, it is wonderful to see how many people from other nations respect President Obama and consider America fortunate to have him as our leader.

I am not sure we will ever be able to change the thinking of the uneducated part of our society. There will always be a segment of the population that causes strife and discord instead of trying to find compromise and goodwill. But, hopefully, next year during the midterm elections, we can vote out most of the GOP and Tea Party Congress (unless some brave Republicans have shown to be players instead of naysayers) and we can start moving in the right direction more quickly.

Congratulations today, Mr. President. The majority of Americans are celebrating with you today!

I got a free cell phone when I signed up with the provider of my service. Most plans offer that. No one has forced health care on me, nor anyone else. Show me where that's true. And what gun control is it that you find unreasonable? Please explain how the small measures the President has offered is going to change your life. And also remember, Congress has to vote those measures in. So even though FOX tells you, the President is not a King. The one etc, you fall under is the failing education system. Unfortunately, Obama's legacy will be the collapse of the U.S. economy under the weight of $20 trillion national debt our country will no longer be able to service in 2016. Nobody will ever remember who was Speaker of the House, but everyone will remember who was President when inflation and unempl0yment both hit 20%.

      learn the truth those "obama phones" are provided under a program started by Wilson to put phones into the homes of the elderly and poor. In 2008 (Bush was still in office) they started including cell phones since that was the technology of the day. You do not have to pay to provide those phones or home phones for the elderly and poor, paying that fee is strictly voluntary. The telecomunication companies lobbied for it, they provide them at no cost to the subscriber and are allowed to charge a fee on a paying subscribers bill. Wow imagine a telecomunication company wanting a bill where they can make more money. If you do not want to pay for it, shut your home phone, cell phone and internet off. If you continue to pay for those then you have no right to complain because you voluntarily choose to!

                          The problem with that idea is that Bush was a moron. Personally, I thought Periot would have been a better choice of business man for the job, but we are where we are. There's a big difference between being a true business man, who works his way to the top building a business and someone who is handed an already established business. When I saw my business fail a few years ago, it was the hardest thing I've had to suffer through professionally. Will you see the oil industry suffer the same problems that private electrical contractors have gone through in the last few years? Probably not in our lifetime. There's a difference between the needs of everyone all the time and the needs of the private sector some of the time. George Bush runs a business that people need all of the time. All he ever had to do was collect the profits. There's a difference when you have to actually hustle to make a clientel, manage your resources, make sure your costs are in line with the quality of service, and make sure that billing is done correctly and on time so everyone gets paid (generally as owner, you make the least until you land the big client and I never complained about it, because as long as my bills were paid I was performming a service to not only my community but the economy by having emploiyees). Try interviewing George Bush and see if you get the same answer from him.

                          In reality, business men (with the proper experience) make the best leaders. Provided that you have actually led your people and grown your business through said leadership. Let's define leadership the same way we did in the military when I was in. If you watch the movie (or even better, read the book) We Were Soldiers (and young), it is spelled out so clearly: "The officer is the first one out of the Helicopter. To inspire your men..." There's the key, be the first one there to inspire by your example! I just never saw that inspiration out of Bush. Just a bunch of BS. He was a politician, not a businessman.

                          A true business man knows the difference between what part of public service you are doing and what part of your interests you are serving. If you are not doing more for the community (be it local, state, federal, global), then your interests are purely greed. If you are doing more to enrich your community, then your business will thrive along with your comunity. Look at what has and is happening in Corperate America and you will see what I mean.

                          JD - nothing in our history supports your post. We have NOT had a businessman who has made a good President and there is a reason for that. Business leaders are used to their word being it - although the best ones work closely with others they are still used to having the final say.

                          The President doesn't get that luxury and has to work with Congress in order to get things done - and as we have seen, when Congress pledges to block any and everything - that isn't possible.

Many of the people want a easy way out and complain about there is no easy success. The government is also punishing the successful by extracting more tax from them and give the money to those who want a handout but without contributing anything. The successful should be praised and rewarded by maintaining or lowering their tax so that they will seek more success by creating more opportunities to many. Is it now the culture of entitlement?                                       Click the link and read the chart. It comes from a good source and is accurate. It also shows that over the years the amount paid by payroll taxes has steadily increased while that of business taxes has steadily declined. Income taxes stayed about the same.

                                      Then consider that those paying income taxes have been making waaaay more all the time and it looks like they are paying less and less. Meanwile the rest of us have seen our income stay the same or go down while our taxes are going up.

                                            So far this resident of the whitehouse has succeeded in: Extending the rule of the nanny-state. Brought the economy to near total collapse started by clinton. Imposed a national health tax. Continued the program of indoctrination and social engineering of the last two generations in public school system. Increased the policy of societal mediocrity and failure that results from "Progressive" agenda. Historically the next step in the Party Agenda is impose runaway inflation so the bills racked up today can be paid with worthless currency tomorrow, the effect for the poor and fixed income as well as any remaining citizens who still have savings is irrelevant. When the government has to borrow from historically hostile foreign nations to pay just the interest on money borrowed yesterday it is very clear what is on the horizon.

                                            This could very well be the last generation to live in a United Republic before the inevitable total economic collapse and fragmentation of the nation. As he stated his intentions the first time around "My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me, as we try to change it." Well thats what happened alright.

                                                          I spent a lot of my time this last year working for the Obama campaign and getting people registered to vote and then driving people to the polls. What did you do to help the political process? What have you got of your own to offer beyond your mewling criticism of me?

                                                          I want to see uphold the Constitution. No overstepping of our rights and laws. Yeah I know the other presidents did also dosn't make it legai. moral, or right. Our righyd are there for a reason. Leave them alone. You work for us whether we voted for you or not. This isn't the country I grew up in. I feel sorry for my kids and grand kids.

                                                            If you really want to see the Constitution upheld, you're going to have to see all of it upheld... not just the second amendment.

                                                            Will you give up three strikes just because the Constitution forbids double jeopardy? That would mean a lot of minorities getting out of prison.. "Law and Order Conservatives" generally like a big powerful police system..

                                                            Are you ready to require the feds need warrants for wire taps and have to press charges when they arrest someone?

                                                            Are you ready to have a free press? What if it meant Julian Assange had a right to publish government leaks? (Those leaks endangered no one, btw..that was all Obama propaganda)

                                                            The Constitution is messy. The rule of law means freedom. Wouldn't you rather that things stay as they are...as long as you have your guns, I mean?

                                                            Can you even imagine not having to testify against yourself even if a judge said you had to? Even if you were granted immunity? Even if it was the IRS?

                                                            What if Congress had to declare war? What if they wouldn't get us into wars like Afghanistan?

                                                            Sensible US citizens dislike the whole idea of freedom. What if the federal government did not have the authority to make pot illegal?

                                                            Are you actually willing to let folks smoke pot just to keep the rule of law and the tenth amendment? Of course not.

                                                            The 2nd amendment was never meant to be permanent or unchangeable. No amendments were. This is why the Founders included provisions for adding, changing and removing amendments. The sad thing is that people are actually talking about revolutions because of the 2nd. What's most likely is these fearful conservatives would not wait until their rights were infringed but rather take pre-emptive action based on what "might" happen. Remember conservative polls declaring Romney as winning by a landslide? These are scary people.

                                                            Congratulations Mr. President. I wonder if, after end of the next 4 years, when the economy and jobs are further improved and the Constitution has remained intact, any of these "haters" will have the character to apologize for the lies they've spread about you and the gratuitous division they've created? Doubt it.

                                                            Has education been dumbed down so much that citizens as simple minded as Leftward actually believe the popular vote has anything to do with electing the position of the executive branch????? The Constitution was specifically designed to prevent that from happening. Four times in the history of the Republic it succeeded:
                                                            Four candidates won the popular vote but lost the presidency: Andrew Jackson won the popular vote but lost the election to John Quincy Adams (1824); Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote but lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes (1876); Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the election to Benjamin Harrison (1888); Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election to George W. Bush (2000).
