From drunken speeches to dead canaries, a guide to our quirky inaugural history

Drunken rants, flamethrowers, dead canaries and newfangled pants.

No, that's not a summary of deleted scenes from "The Hangover."  It's a list of some of the more interesting highlights from our nation's rich history of past presidential inaugurations.

Besides the pomp and circumstance, the inauguration -- with its associated balls and parades -- is a logistical puzzle, complete with all the potential chaos that comes with organizing a heavily attended event in wintertime, in a swamp of an East Coast city.

From mishaps to glory, here are a few pieces of inaugural trivia you can use to impress your friends and neighbors.

** As vice president, an ill Andrew Johnson became so intoxicated on the day of Lincoln's inauguration that he gave a rambling speech about himself before becoming too confused to perform his duty swearing in the new senators. "The inauguration went off very well except that the Vice President Elect was too drunk to perform his duties & disgraced himself and the Senate by making a drunken foolish speech," wrote Sen. Zachariah Chandler of Michigan at the time.

Abraham Lincoln swore the oath in front of an incomplete Capitol dome. Lyndon B. Johnson became president on Air Force One next to a dazed Jacqueline Kennedy. A collection of photographs from past presidential inaugurations.

** Good trivia: First president of the United States who was not born a British subject? Martin Van Buren, inaugurated 1837.

** Even better trivia: First president to wear long trousers instead of knee breeches? John Quincy Adams, 1825.

** At the very first inauguration in 1789, the Bible used by President George Washington was hastily opened to Genesis 49:13, which reads, "Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon."

** In 2009, President Barack Obama used the Lincoln Bible, used by Abraham Lincoln at his presidential inauguration. The book, published in 1853, has 1,280 pages.

** For John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961, a morning snow left an accumulation of about eight inches. Army flame throwers were used to clear it from Pennsylvania Avenue.

** The estimated temperature at Ronald Reagan's first inaugural was a balmy 55 degrees Fahrenheit. At his second, it was a frigid seven -- the coldest inauguration on record -- and the ceremony had to be held inside.

Andrea Mitchell's been covering presidential inaugurations for over three decades. Here's a look at some of the highlights.

** At another chilly celebration, in 1873, guests at President Ulysses S. Grant's ball had to dance in their coats because the temporary structure built for the occasion was so frigid. Champagne became Slurpee-like in consistency, and the flock of canaries brought in for guests' enjoyment ended up freezing to death.

** After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson was sworn in at his residence at the Kirkwood House on Pennsylvania Avenue. The site is now a high-rise.

** After Kennedy was assassinated, Lyndon Johnson took the oath of office on Air Force One. It was the first time the presidential or vice presidential oath of office was administered by a woman, U.S. District Judge Sarah T. Hughes.

** The first televised inaugural ceremony was Harry Truman's in 1949. The first broadcast nationally by radio was Calvin Coolidge's in 1925. The first known photographs from an inauguration were in 1857 at the ceremony for James Buchanan.

** The tradition of inaugural balls is traced to the first one thrown for James and Dolley Madison. Tickets to the 1809 gala, held at Long's Hotel, were $4 apiece.

** A grand ball for James Buchanan in 1857 included 400 gallons of oysters, 75 hams and $3,000 worth of wine. (That's more than $70,000 in today's money.)

PFFFFFFFFTT!

Reagan has nothing on me. In eight years he couldn't even add 2 trillion to the debt.

I beat that in my first two years and I'm on pace to add 11 trillion By the end of my eight year reign.

Actually no, I had a JOB 4 years ago that paid more than what I'm being offered now for the same exact duties. Yes my stocks are doing a little better but that means a whole lot of nothing until I sell them.

We are not more respected are you joking? We are LAUGHED at continuously. Who exactly "loves us" that didn't 4 years ago?

Human Life International President Father Shenan J. Boquet is calling on pro-lifers around the world to stay vigilant, to pray, and not to give up hope.

"Under the most radical anti-life president America has ever seen, the U.S. taxpayers have funded a destructive foreign policy, which has already done great harm around the world," said Father Boquet. "But we must continue to fight for those who cannot defend themselves, and we cannot lose hope, because the Lord of Life is on our side.

"We need prayer now more than ever for our unborn brothers and sisters around the world facing death due to the policies of the Obama administration, and for those facing persecution for daring to spread the Gospel of Life," Father Boquet said. "May Our Lord Jesus Christ give us the strength to run the race and win the fight for life."

Reagan was the first to bring out the credit card and max it to the limit. Good times to be had for all. Bush 41 struggled with the bills and lost his re-election bid to Clinton. Clinton said, "It's all about the economy, stupid" He spent eight years building the strongest economy in American history.

Bush 43 insisted that Clinton's surplus be returned to the American people. He did just that by serving 90% of the pie to the top 10% while the backbone of America received just a sliver. I was there. I protested loudly that I would gladly return my sliver if the top 10% would make the pie whole again. No dice.

Bush 43 declared himself the decider and decided to ignore dire warnings from the previous administration concerning an inevitable and shortly coming attack on the United States by Al Qaeda. Who was he, the great decider, to take heed of the dire warnings from the lowly and immoral former administration? It was his turn to be President!

Here comes 9/11. Surprise, surprise. Lil' Bush is now a war time president. Wait just a minute. A war on terror is not a real war. A real war time president must have a nation to attack. Not a bunch of loonies hiding out in various nations. Iraq is the place we ought to be. Cheney has been itching for this one. All of that oil. Besides, they are the bastards that dissed my Daddy.

We can lie about weapons of mass destruction and yellow cake to build nuclear bombs. We can paint a vivid picture of the looming mushroom clouds coming from Iraq. By God, we can sell this to the great number of Republican sheeple now quivering in their shoes. We'll make it even more realistic by requiring that all Americans remove those shoes to board American aircraft.

Cheney says the liberated Iraqis will greet our forces with flowers. Cheney says that Iraqi oil will pay for this very short excursion. Dad warned me not to to trust this liar and thief, but what the hell does he know?

We know the rest of the story. Lil' Bush got Saddam's personal weapon and we got the shaft. Lil' Bush and Cheney got riches beyond their wildest imagination as we are left holding the bag for decades to come. These war criminals can never travel outside the United States as we pay for their utter incompetence.

We should be able to write this whole sorry escapade off as a tragic mistake by the American electorate and move on. Not so. Millions of former Bush supporters refuse to take personal responsibility for their colossal screw-up and insist fault lies with those unfortunates elected to clean up this mess.

They persist in holding our nation hostage until we agree to absolve them from all wrongdoing. To paraphrase another bumbling Bush, "Read my lips. It ain't gonna happen".

The site seems to be full of you folks, today; but no one comments, when truth and "Commonsense..." has something to say, (chuckle...).. You people (that's right, I said it; "you people")are something else. To those of you who can read, take your time... use your finger... and, it's okay to move your lips, as you slowly move said finger, left to right (you love that direction, don't you?) You can even "sound out" the words as you go. Then think about what Commonsense has written, here. Come on. You can do it. Give it a try, for the sake of the country. Trust me, a little truth won't hurt. And, by the way, today is Inauguration Day, folks. Four more years. Ain't it grand? ONLY IN AMERICA! I really love this country; don't you :-) Have a great day, today...

...oh, and I forgot: Happy MLK Day Martin. And this, from all of us who loved and love you still...

    BECAUSE OF HIM

    Our way seems clearer, since he shared his precious dream with us, so many years ago;

The path he left for us to tread is somehow straighter-and the journey has more purpose now.

    And, why?

    Because of him...

We can feel the first warm rays of bright and healing sun.

    This bold new day, though yet to break full-blown;

Has set our hope-filled morn ablaze, with colors that have gone before unseen.

Our dark grey world is black and white, no more.

    And this...

    Because of him...

    It seems that only yesterday our endless night gave way to bright and golden dawn;

    As Freedom sang her truth-filled song, for faithful ears to hear;

He has been our proof that honest prayers go not unheard.

    Because of him, the land of promise can be seen;

It is at last that we are free to live the dream.

    Pop's 2002

Ps: Those of us who love you, miss you Martin, and we always will...

Not true. First, our country is not governed based on the tenets of a single religion. That is a good thing and should not be changed. Second, you make ethical judgements on behalf of many people who do not agree that those points are non-negotiable, or that they are necessarily even evil - something neither you nor anyone else is entitled to do.

As a Christian I am embarrassed by people like you who profess to be Christians, yet clearly do not understand the nature of their own faith. Go get your bible and start reading it right now, because you are doing it wrong.

Reagan may not have added $2T to the debt, but in context, he TRIPLED the debt from that which existed the day he took office. Obama would have to add $20T to equal THAT RECORD!!!

Before Reagan took office, every President since WWII DECREASED the national debt relative to GDP, Reagan REVERSED that course. Debt, which had been over 120%/GDP after WWII, had been reduced to just over 30%.GDP by the end of Carter's admin. Reagan drove it back over 50%. Bush I took it over 63%. Clinton took it back down to the mid-50% range and Bush II, turned around the annual surplus he was given and took debt to over 80%.

And handed Obama the WORST ECONOMY since the 1930's along with a $1T annual deficit.

        Context matters!

The reason George W. Bush will not attend the inauguration is that his handlers can't allow him out in public drunk as a street wino.

We all know where our problem came from, but its time to roll up our sleeves and get together and fix it. Yeh, the rich guys too. GOP should not act like peckerwood taskmaster for the rich. GOP must find its own identity. It seems that Democrats have found theirs, GOP needs to read the same books. The law is suppose to be one way, but Government is two ways. I hope we all get back on tracks and make American citizens comfortable. Lets not cut lean and fatten up where its drippy. Yeh!! we got poor Republicans too, GOP you better talk for us as well as you do for the fat cats. HH POTUS, is a nice caring guy, despite his middle name and ashy color, he is a true kind hearted American and he needs our help to make us better. So, stop bickering and hail CHIEF POTUS OBAMA. Next time a reasonable white GOP guy, but not rubio, and the other eight clowns we had before.

"saddled" Obama with this debt? So ... what .... he couldn't fix it? He has tried to push through changes to the Second Amendment in LESS THAN 2 MONTHS! But he cannot (read will not) do that with: 1) immigration reform, 2) fixing the economy, 3) lower the debt, 4) bringing home ALL soldiers. Nope not one bit of this is HIS fault. Except responsibility and move on to the job at hand! THAT he will not do. It is always someone else fault. The sign on President Truman's desk - The Buck Stops here.

A lab rat, who probably has more sense, could have just waited 4-5 years for things to SLOWLY come back on their own. Odumbo and the Clown spent their first two years cramming the pc of sht health plan down the throats of their bosses. He has executive ordered his way through more crp than the public even knows. Liberal media needs to pull their collective heads out of his ass and wipe the jizz off their chin. He's not the messiah...he's not even a mediocre president.

Actually today is "Blue Monday" another useless piece of trivia I learned watching the news.

                  from wiki:

Blue Monday is a name given to a date in mid-to-late January stated, as part of a publicity campaign by Sky Travel, to be the most depressing day of the year. However, the whole concept is consideredpseudoscience.[1], with its formula derided by scientists as nonsense.

I do actually find this humorous as it's coinciding with President Obama's inaguration.

Thanks for the input 1SGFitzs... Hit the nail on the head. It is most certainly the most depressing day of the year when this clown is sworn in again.

Hey MikeO, Like I give a crap about what Odumbo athletic supporters think about what I had to say about Odumbo and the Clown. Truth hurts doesn't it... Maybe Odumbo can sign an executive order to make people like him and be blind to his extreme BS. And how dare you quote the great John Wayne while defending Odumbo. He just rolled over in his grave because you mentioned his name in the same sentence with such an unpatriotic waste of a president.

Just thinking about how Romney and Ann will be crying wishing it was them at this ceremony. Karl Rove still claiming his numbers is right. If you go back and look at Eisenhower and Truman's policies and presidencies, you'll find they were both very close to President Obama's -- closer to the current Democratic platform than the far right-wing Republican policies in play today. Do some research, learn some history. My dad is 81 and an Eisenhower Republican. He remembers and voted Obama -- twice.

                            Now that
President Obama has been inaugurated, There are many Republicans who deserve to be credited for this eventful day. There include:

                            Donald Trump
(special credit) – for his infinite wisdom on the forensics of birth
certificates. Trump almost created history himself by becoming the first
candidate to moderate a debate in which he was also a candidate. George Will
pointed this out in a column. George Will
                            was always a party pooper.

                            John Sununu –
I am sure that the Obama administration is currently thinking of appointing
Sununu as Secretary for Race Relations. That Colin Powell...he can’t be serious!

                            Mitch Mc
Connell – for his dedication in 2008 to the length of time Obama would have in
                            office.

                            Rush
Limbaugh – Rush was not afraid to call a spade a spade or a woman who desires
to use contraception a slut. Rush earns a
distinction for being robust with his language, but short on deliberate thinking.

                            Grover
Norquist – Norquist’s insightful actions of getting those Republicans to sign
on the dotted line is a masterpiece in modern contract formation. Norquist came to the logical conclusion that getting a signature is the only sure way to hold these slippery politicians’ feet to
the fire. It is now fair to say that the politicians have slipped away again
                            and raised taxes.

                            Todd Akin
and Richard Murdoch: It should never be forgotten that in this cruel world,
some in our midst have a direct line to God and are not afraid to let the
public know that they possess the special skills. Thanks guys.

                            Billy Graham
Website– It is fair to say that this website provided us with a prime example
that we are all children of God even those people who are cult worshipers –
well not all people – but most people, excluding that Obama.

                            Tea Party:
this ensemble was responsible for further shaping the disposition of Republicans in the House & Senate. Their philosophy is: a reduced credit rating is a small price to pay for enhanced ideology and to get back at that Obama.

                            Republicans
in the House & Senate: There is nothing wrong with failing to speak up if
it suits your agenda; hence it was not the responsibility of 99.999% of
Republicans to say anything to the birthers. Birthers are people too and have
earned the right to say whatever they please - and the Republicans have the right to tacitly agree with them by saying nothing.

                            Right Wing Talk
Show Hosts: The fact that Obama was referred to night after night as a
communist, a socialist, a Marxist, a thief and even compared to Hitler was
nothing more than jokes shared between consenting adults.

Obama did not build it by himself:

That's true, he was assisted tremendously by the following clowns & buffoons with their mean-spirited, assinine, despicable and at times bigoted comments and/or actions. They include Donald
Trump; John Sununu, Mitch McConnell, Rush Limbaugh; Grover Norquist; Todd Akin,
Richard Mourdock; The Tea Party; Conservative talk show hosts and 99.999% of Republicans serving in the Senate and the House who were only too happy by their silence to feed the birther propaganda nonsense embracedby Trump. Thank you all for the contributions you have made to your country.

However, based on the information that I have read before taking a look at your trivia, I believe that the first president to wear long trousers was James Madison in 1809. I have a few links for you. Please let me know if I am correct.

The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, 'merely a fool'. It is far less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their President.

Sooner or later you will get over the fact that your party lost. That's the way our system works. Too bad for you and your illogical hated of Barrack Obama. You had nothing to offer but the same old policies that got us into the economic mess and increased intrusion into peoples lives and bedrooms.

The party of small government my a**!

                                    Dear Carrie,

In your quiz, you mentioned that the first president to wear trousers was John Quincy Adams in 1825. However, based on the information that I have read before taking a look at your trivia, James Madison was the first president to wear trousers in 1809. Please let me know if I am correct.

                                    Best regards,

                                    Greg 7th grader

                                      Obviously not!
