SeekingSanity, I have supported neither political party since Ronald Reagan, which was the first election I could vote in. I feel that both the parties are pandering to idealogies that are not supported by the majority of U.S. citizens. As a U.S. trained military veteran, I took an oath to defend the Constitution of the USA. That is an oath that I took as seriously as I take the Pledge of Allegiance. In the past 40 years, I have undergone multiple deep background checks and passed with no issues. Why should I be limited to what I own because some idiot decides to use a particular weapon in a killing? I would dare say that there are multitutes of people in the USA that shouldn't own a car but I won't raise a cry to ban them from owning one. Just remember the first objective of an Occupational force is to limit the population's access to items needed to make weapons and munitions. Most of those items are available in any store or home. You want to ban weapontry...remember that the next time you go to the grocery store. Your next purchase could be material for making a weapon.

Any other time there is a controversy of this magnitude, the first thing you liberals want to do is have the government do a study, and get the 'facts'.

So why the rush to condemn firearms? Why not have the government do a study to find out just exactly how many lives are saved vs. how many are taken with firearms? Find out the circumstances surrounding those incidences? Maybe we need to find out just exactly who is doing the shooting and why.

I think some of you people supporting this ban on guns should do some research into the writing of the authors of the constitution. If anyone thinks they made guns legal for self defense or for hunting you might be surprised by Jefferson, Adams and Washington's writings concerning the right to bear arms. For this reason and this one alone any government action by the president to take away this right or to infringe on it should be met with impeachment.

The fact is Guns are not the problem. Not any particular gun. The second amendment was security against Tyranny and not to protect hunting. I do think thorough background checks should be made, but the ban on a certain kind of gun is pointless.

The president's main priority RIGHT NOW, should be the Debt Ceiling, and not raising it. But cutting spending. The Gov. does so much that it doesn't need to.

Last of all. Smile you are not the only intelligent person on the planet. Democrats don't have the corner on that market though many would think so. The republicans don't have the corner on business and economics. Maybe you need to do a little research of your own. Your beloved SCOTUS, you know the ones who said the ACA was Constitutional, also said that the 2nd amendment is an individual right (Keller v DC 2008 and again in 2010 expanded it with Chicago Lawsuit)

If you were ever, God forbid, attacked by a violent criminal, the odds of getting hurt or killed if you don't have a gun for self-defense are much higher, regardless of the weapon the criminal uses against you, even if he has no weapon at all. I just don't want people like you to take away reasonable people's rights.

Most of the time, when I hear a story from a pro-gun advocate about the value of having a gun for self-defense, I am subjected to a barrage of claims that guns prevent, deter, and defend against criminals. In actual fact, a person who has a gun or guns in their home is twenty two times more likely to die from being shot. His wife may shoot him on purpose, or his child by accident, or an intruder who takes his gun away from him and uses it to kill him. But for gun owners, the odds are not in their favor. So I take the self-defense argument with a grain of salt. I acknowledge that there have been instances where a homeowner has used a gun in self-defense successfully. The lady with the twins is a case in point. I am glad she had a gun. It probably saved her and her children. But how many other people died because their own guns were used to kill them? How many children died or killed a sibling or a parent because they found an unsecured weapon?

I'm not going to bother with the argument about defending yourself from an oppressive government because I think that is just flat-out paranoid nonsense.

I believe that a lot of gun owners are sane, responsible and careful people who secure their weapons properly, do not use them to hurt other people, and have a legitimate use for those weapons, be it target shooting or hunting. One of my dear friends was a gun collector and I trusted him completely.

Unfortunately, I also believe that for every responsible gun owner there is a gun owner out there who is a complete idiot. He leaves his guns lying around where anyone can pick them up. He gets drunk and goes out in the backyard and starts shooting at the moon. He waves his gun around to threaten people who piss him off. He is a tragedy waiting to happen. I once had a drunk neighbor point a gun at me because he thought I was a burglar. I was actually coming home after working a night shift. It wasn't a happy moment. I couldn't even yell at him for being an idiot because he was a drunk holding a loaded weapon.

If I had been a burglar, I might well have taken that gun away from him and shot him. I sure felt like shooting him!

So please don't tell me how responsible all gun owners are. It's not true. Some gun owners are responsible. Others definitely are not. I'd like to weed out some of the irresponsible ones. If any of these jackasses live near you, you should want to deprive them of their right to bear arms as quickly as possible. Your family will be safer.

"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

... equates to...

"The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, as a well regulated militia is necessary to the security of a free state."

Either way, it means the same thing.

Which leads to the one part the grabbers cannot wrap their tiny little minds around... "Well Regulated Militia". So what must be done to gain understanding? You must use the reference materials USED BY THE COURT AND CONGRESS. This would include Dictionaries used at the time of the actual drafting, and Law dictionaries.

"Well Regulated" is defined as: well equipped, well ordered and well trained...

"Militia" is defined as: A body of CITIZENS ARMED and trained, esp. by a state*, for military service APART FROM the regular armed forces. -- reserve militia. ALL persons who are not exempt from military service and not actively serving in the armed forces OR national guard. -- Black's Law Dictionary 8th Edition

So we can put this into lay terms and end up with the proper interpretation as being:

When someone is killed by a drunk driver do we go after the car company that sold them their vehicle? No. We hold the person accountable that caused the mess. Simple logic works. I am still want to know why citizens have access to hollowpoint/expanding ammo when our military does not. Please explain to me why citizens are allowed better more efficient ammo that kills quicker? What is your game plan to defend yourself if someone attacks you, scream like a little girl? Just bend over and take it like a...? Hire a person guard with a gun? If were guilty...they are guilty!

So many insults, so little progress. As some have stated, weapons we keep as a citizen primarily are meant to protect us. From who? Our dysfunctional government, terrorists, drug cartels, robbers or just plain whackos. We buy insurance for our house, car, life - do we actually PLAN on getting in a car wreck? No, but we still keep insurance. Extra food, money, weapons that we stock don't mean we're paranoid - just that we feel safer with "insurance". Look around you at all the countries that have people fighting the government. Stop saying, "oh, it'll never happen to me". Here's the BIG problem - our government wants to REGISTER ALL GUNS - that means, they'll have lists, maps (oh, no!) of everyone who has a registered gun. If they deem it necessary, they'll have an easy time rounding up all the guns in any particular area. I think this is why most people who are now law - abiding folks will become criminals to keep that information out of hands like the idiots who published maps of gun owners, as well as our government.

Obama seems to be pushing everything he can to get into the history books, and he doesn't care a bit about our future as a country. He has promoted homosexuality in our military, helped spread condoms in school, abortions without parent consent or knowledge, attacked religious institutions, not yet completed ONE budget, got our credit rating lowered, installed ANOTHER government - run health care program (now we have Medicare, Medicaid, and "Obamacare" - each with thousands of government employees running them) put millions out of work, out of homes and now wants to "regulate" our guns.

We as Americans, have good reason to be suspicious of our government. We have a "budget committee" that has not been doing their job for four years now, and still are getting paid! Would we do that in a real - life situation? No, we'd FIRE THEM! We have the most dysfunctional government since I was old enough to think about government. We have a "leader", who is supposed to LEAD our government, and actually accomplish paying our bills, not spending more than we earn, and get our economy back on an even keel.

Our Constitution states that any person, who enters the US illegally, is to be deported immediately, unless they committed a crime, which in case should serve their time, then be deported. Our "leader" is pushing to let all those who committed a crime against the United States to be pardoned, given welfare, hospital care, schooling - even possible Social Security (without putting anything into it). He swore an oath when he became President to, "protect, honor and defend the Constitution of the United States". How can he keep doing these things, and have so many Americans idolize him?

Silverton. Didn't you wonder that same thing about Little Bush, Dick Cheney, Rummy, and everyone else in Bush's Admin, Except Colon Powell. I own Guns, so I am not anti gun nut. But for the life of me can't understand why anyone wants or feels the need to own a bushmaster, except those that live on the Mexican boarder, as that is a war zone. I couldn't ever think that i couldn't leave my home with out a Gun on my side. We have 350 pound Bears roaming around where I live. I always have Weapons near by that are loaded in the Mag. that can be ready for action with, racking one into the chamber. And If I lived in the city I would do the same thing i guess. I was a builder for 30 years and I have taken my hunting to job sites where we have had Bear problems. So I can't say I haven't taken Guns to work because I have. Its just these semi Auto Bushmasters that can hold 30 to 50 rounds. These Guns are for nothing else but to kill people. If anyone think they just have to have one of these Guns let them join the army.

Evidently you are not a gun efficiendo. The AR platform is a wonderful hunting rifle system. I have one AR lower and 4 AR uppers. One is .243 SSM for prairie dog(heavy barrel bench gun), 6.8mm for deer, .50 Beowolf for wild hogs and .223 for coyotes and just plinking. One firearm, 4 useful guns. It was cheaper to go this route until the liberals got their panties in a bunch.
