Obama's new Cabinet: Who's in, who's out, and who's in the running

With the congressional storm over debt and spending temporarily calmed after the fiscal cliff fight, the political world's attention now turns to the administration's shuffling of top agency jobs at the start of President Barack Obama's second term.

The president's cabinet includes 15 heads of federal departments, appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. As Obama’s first term comes to an end, there remains plenty of uncertainty about as to the status of much of the cabinet, including some of the top positions in the government.  Here’s what we know so far:

Secretary of State: Obama has already announced Sen. John Kerry as his pick to succeed departing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, choosing the Foreign Relations Committee head after his other reported top choice, Susan Rice, withdrew from consideration for the post. Kerry is expected to be confirmed easily by his Senate colleagues.

Secretary of Defense: An administration official has confirmed to NBC's Chuck Todd that President Obama plans to nominate former Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican and Vietnam veteran, for the Defense secretary position on Monday. Hagel would replace Leon Panetta at the helm of Defense Department.

The Nebraska lawmaker faces significant opposition from some in his own party who are wary of Hagel's past statements about Israel. Hagel was also forced to issue an apology after foes resurfaced a 1998 comment in which Hagel criticized an "aggressively gay" political appointee.

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” last week, Obama praised Hagel but said he has not made a final decision about who he wants for the top Pentagon job.

"I haven't made a decision about who to nominate," Obama said. "And my number one criteria will be who's going to do the best job in helping to secure America."

If nominated, Hagel would be boosted by two heavyweights other than the president: Vice President Joe Biden and Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed.

Other possibilities reportedly discussed for the post were Former Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy, or Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

With the fiscal cliff crisis barely in the rear view mirror, the White House's likely decision to pick former Sen. Chuck Hagel for the defense secretary position is likely to ignite a contentious confirmation battle. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Treasury Secretary: Current Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, the final remaining member of Obama's original economic team, has signaled that he will step down after the inauguration, which could leave the department without a confirmed chief during the coming showdown over the debt ceiling. White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew, a former director of the Office of Management and Budget, is considered to be Geithner's likely successor.

But as NBC's Political Unit notes, the White House may think twice about handling a confirmation process at the same time as yet another round of brinkmanship over the government's legal borrowing power.

Jason Reed / Reuters

President Barack Obama walks off stage with Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner after speaking about his meeting on infrastructure investment, in the Rose Garden of the White House in this Oct. 11, 2010 file photo.

CIA Director: While not technically a Cabinet position, also in the mix will be a new intelligence guru to replace former CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus, who resigned after admitting to an extramarital affair with his biographer.

In the running for that job are John Brennan, an influential White House adviser on counter-terrorism, as well as acting CIA Director Michael Morrell.

Other Cabinet positions:  Along with the candidates for those high-ranking positions, there will likely be other openings throughout the administration, with possible departures from other agencies including the Energy and Commerce departments.

If Interior Department head Ken Salazar chooses to leave, former Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, retiring Rep. Norm Dicks of Washington, and outgoing Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire are on the shortlist to replace him,  according to a Democratic insider.

Environmental Protection Agency head Lisa Jackson has also announced her departure at the end of January, setting up an open position at an organization frequently targeted by Republican foes of federal regulations. (The EPA chief job is not among the 15 official Cabinet positions but is awarded the status of "cabinet rank.")

When President Barack Obama returns to Washington this weekend, he will still have two big cabinet posts to fill and the current favorite for Secretary of Defense – Chuck Hagel – is taking heat on a range of issues. Obama 2012 traveling press secretary Jen Pskai and former RNC Chairman Michael Steele discuss.

Hagel seems a good choice for Defense. It's ironic how the Republicans go on and on about 'bipartisanship" until it's time to actually walk the walk. Obama's choice of a Republican for the office earns him no points at all with the Party of No.

As for Kerry being 'easily confirmed': I will believe that Republicans are capable of cooperation when I see it.

The statement was that he is "Agressively Gay", that means a potential pedophile if you pro gays are willing to include pedophiles in the club then that ruins your credibility also.

what is also important is Homeland Security. that job is, and has been, as open as the border and it needs to be repaired fast. Napolitano is just not getting the job done. and then there is Holder who is still in contempt and Obama* has to exersize executive privelidge again to defend the information from becoming public and there is the death which was caused by their conspiracy to allow straw purchases of assault weapons by foreign insurgents.

putting gay soldiers in the areas where they train the afghanistan police who will shoot them, for being gay, is a farce.

Not accurate. Gay people are no more likely to be pedophiles than straight people are. In fact, it's probably true that most pedophiles are heterosexual.

You don't know what Chuck Hagel meant by that comment, but he surely didn't mean to insinuate the guy was a pedophile.

Obamas track record on executive decisions is not too good. He chose his first cabinet and with them he was unable to accomplish squat so many of them are running or have already gone. hillary has had enough of his lack of leadeship skills. So whats next. he is in a second term and any effects of Bush are gone and it will now rest on him alone. So far since election he hasn't managed to get congress to get a budget done. failed to get emergency aid pushed through for the Sandy victims he was so very very worried about just before the election....lol ( not so worried now is he?) Wasn't able to get the tax hikes he talks so much about and he hasn't offered up any of the other side of "balanced approach" like spending cuts.

This new cabinet will most likely prove to be as in-effective as his first because he is in-effective as a leader.

Obama has shown bipartisanship by picking a Republican Secretary of Defense.

So, here’s a part of Barrack Husseins accomplishments over the past 4 years.

4 years in a row of trillion dollar plus deficits.

A National Debt of over $16.4 trillion.

A Federal Reserve that has added $2.9 trillion to its balance sheet and now it worries whether it helped.

We have just spent the $2.1 trillion dollars we raised the debt ceiling to just 16 months ago, over $131 billion a month spent.

Unfunded Liabilities over $125 trillion. There's not enough wealth in America to pay this off.

States are burdened with over $4 trillion in unfunded pensions.

Student loans exceed $1 trillion (most in danger of default).

Social Security and Medicare's Trust Funds will run out in 20 and 12 years respectively.

The Institute of Medicine reports that our health care system loses $750 billion EVERY YEAR!

The federal government made at least $125 billion in improper payments in 2011.

Washington spends $92 billion on corporate welfare (excluding TARP) versus $71 billion on homeland security.

The Congressional Budget Office published a “Budget Options” series identifying more than $140 billion in potential spending cuts.

Examples from multiple Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports of wasteful duplication include 342 economic development programs; 130 programs serving the disabled; 130 programs serving at-risk youth; 90 early childhood development programs; 75 programs funding international education, cultural, and training exchange activities; and 72 safe water programs. This report identifies more than $100 billion to $200 billion in annual government spending on 1,500 different programs that are wasteful, duplicative, or inefficient.

Now let me show you a finding by our own government auditors that should outrage even the most rabid Big Government advocate.

Government auditors spent the past five years examining all federal programs and found that 22 percent of them–costing taxpayers a total of $123 billion annually–fail to show any positive impact on the populations they serve. (emphasis mine)

Almost 25% of our coveted social programs do NOTHING for the intended population!

AT A COST OF ALMOST $125 BILLION EVERY YEAR!!!!!!!

This is $1.25 TRILLION over 10 years.

It may also interest you that this study by our governments own auditors was started under Bush in 2003. When the results were revealed the study mysteriously ended in 2009.

Coincidence?

I think not.

So, despite all this, the argument is over $430 million to Hollywood versus $70 million to NASCAR in the most recent “fiscal cliff” hoax!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe, just maybe, you should be more concerned about the hundreds of trillions of dollars our government has lost to waste, fraud, abuse and corruption over the past century.

Good luck America, you’ll need it with Barrack Hussein trying to ruin our great Republic!

Let's see now - The 'rich' (top 10%) make about 43% of the income, and pay 71% of the income taxes.

The Middle Class makes about 54% of the income and pays 27% of the income taxes.

The 'Poor' make about 13% of the income and pays only about 2% of the income taxes, while getting the vast majority of the 'benefits' of government spending.

JimSpence

Here is some interesting info;

Over the last year, virtually NONE of our new Debt (over $1 Trillion) is being bought by any REAL investors - It is being bought by the Federal Reserve to finance Obama's spending spree.

I fact, China (previously our top creditor) has REDUCED the amount that they have invested in American government Debt by about $200 Billion - Why? Because they know that Inflation is coming soon from all of that new money being 'created' by the Federal Reserve. That $200 Billion repayment to China also had to be financed by the Federal Reserve.

Any student of Economics 101 knows that will lead to massive Inflation in the future, and when the Fed tries to stop Inflation by reducing the money supply, it will cause a REAL 'Great Recession'.

Be forewarned.

ROY WILSON-336103

And YOUR version of 'fair' is what?

Roy, Liberals/Progressives have NO version of "fair".

This is just their irrational rage against those that are successful and become wealthy. This is their anger at themselves that they have never created anything that they can be proud of. They exist only for themselves and their sheltered little lives. They adhere to Barrack Husseins class-warfare/envy meme and hope they can just continue to live off the government dole.

I have asked dozens of times for any of them to define "fair", a "fair share", a "level playing field" and of course their favorite fairy-tale ideology, the "living wage". To date NOT ONE of them can answer it logically. They all come up with some bizarre concept of fairness and each of them are different.

When you confront them with, who will be the ultimate unbiased arbiter to decide what is fair, they are even more disjointed. One of their favorite solutions is that "society" will decide, but when you challenge it with a different opinion they proclaim that is "unfair".

The "living wage" is even more comical to watch them try to describe.

The bottom line is they have no solutions to these ideologies; they're all based solely on emotions. Most Liberal/Progressive decisions are based on emotions rather than policy. This is where their world unwinds into chaos as none of them can agree which emotion should dominate.

The usual, "It's the right thing to do", always ends up with significant unintended consequences that none of them anticipate because they never think ahead. Everything is a knee-jerk reaction to one crisis after another. They never realize the biggest creator of all the crises we encounter is from our own government.

As far as the tax "fairness" is concerned, it will never be resolved. The principle driving factor with Liberals/Progressives regarding taxes is that the rich end up having more money AFTER they pay their taxes.

In the delusional Liberal mind, everyone should have the same amount left after they pay their taxes, regardless of how hard you work or contribute to society. The biggest problem with this level of idiocy is that Liberals/Progressives never achieve much so they contribute so much less, but they expect you to create a business, create commerce, create wealth and prosperity and then just give it to our criminal government in the form of more taxes so it can cause more waste, fraud, abuse and corruption.

In short, Liberals/Progressives know they can't be competitive in the real world so they hide behind the nanny state government and live out their pathetic existence according to the "Life of Julia" Barrack Hussein so worships.

This is their conundrum and shame.

I used to work shortened 6 and 7 day weeks in D.C. for a bunch of years. Had to wait about 3 hours each day for the first commuter bus back to VA since I would get off early. That was fine, got to see all of D.C. many times over. Had gallery passes to the Senate and House floor. Many days when I was tired or it was really cold out, I would climb up into the gallery to watch different Senators or Congressmen speak or whatever was going on. You are not allowed to sleep or anything up there or they will wake you up or toss you out immediately. Anyhow, one day (this was way back long ago) Kerry got up to the podium to get his statement on the record in front of no one (the chambers are usually empty, they just stand there to get their words into the official record in case you have never visited). After about 3 minutes I couldn't help but fall into a deep sleep. I suppose the security people had seen me up there so many times they let me slide and sleep. But I woke up and missed the first two busses home.... can never forgive Kerry for being so boring.... :-) :-) I feel sorry for him though, all his life living with his Kennedy wannabe infatuation... and never really making the grade. Sad.

Good story - Kerry can change his present persona with a new, or no, hairpiece. Starting to look like he goes to Trump's stylist. Bald! Live with it John.

It's mind boggling. Are there any normal Republicans left in this country in 2013?

Hagel, who doesn't recognize Israel as being in his chain-of-command, would balance citizen of Israel and potential U.S. Sec of Treasury Jack Lew whose first loyalty is presumably to Israel. Lew's been gatekeeping at the White House since February so Israel will lose its real-time access to some of the sensitive scenes there if he's confirmed for Treasury.

Long before even the captain yells abandon ship, the original cabinet has fled. The last few are jumping into icy water to get away. Obama has made history in so many ways... Some are good for our country and equally others point out how he is no different than any other president for the last 30 years. Which in itself is equally damning to his legacy.

Republicans will not oppose Sen. John Kerry for Sec. of State--- so they can have a shot at the open senate seat. Expect them them to oppose Chuck Hagel, a Republican, who often spoke out against his own party when they were wrong. They'll raise hell any chance they get. They dont get it! I urge them to raise hell since it will be more nails in their coffin! The sooner we are rid of this dangerous version of the GOP, the better! This country doesnt need a party willing to do anything, including treason, endangering the country etc, just to achieve the political goals.

Times: ah, but you dont document it. For example: when a political party deliberately endangers the national security, financial stability and economic future of the US by creating a debt crisis thru huge tax cuts and massive overspending, as the republicans did beginning with raygun--- THAT is treason!! The same can be said about selling arms to a known enemy of the United States(Iran). Outing a covert CIA operative ( in the words of GHWB) is also treason!!(Please, no BS about whether Plame was covert-- she certainly was at the time of her outing according to a court filing by the CIA)

Some Jews don't like Hagel because he does not want America to start a war with Iran. I hate all theocracies and wish Iran were wiped off the face of the Earth. I once met an Iranian Revolutionary Guard member and felt a hatred so intense I could have put a gun to his head, killed him just to watch him die (as the Johnny Cash song goes). All the same I think Hagel is a good choice for Secretary of Defense. Why? He voluteered for Vietnam, served honorably and learned that wars should be started only when there is absolutely no other choice.

Problem: Russia and China don't want to cooperate on the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

John Kerry, Hagel, Humpty Dumpty, the Tooth Fairy. It makes no difference. The devastation and soul crushing has taken place. America reelected the socialist farce and will never recover from his policies, never. So, whomever dances Obama's jig for the next four years does not make a lick of difference.

Businesses will make tactical changes. Individuals will make tactical changes. And for those of you that think the changes will benefit mankind or the economy, wake up. Your President and his court jester Vice President are hopelessly fanatical fools, unattached to reality.

Please pay attention to the decline in America over the next four years, revel in it and be proud of what you have allowed this narcissistic vacation goer to accomplish in such a short time. Oh yeah, and when you need your next socialist handout, don't come looking to me. My assets will have been converted to that which your grimy little mitts will never see. Now do you understand how this works?

Better question would be why anyone would want to work under Obama?

Given that we are broke and need to make cuts this would be a great time to freeze all federal hiring until we have a budget that includes debt reduction. Since Obama has so much free time to vacation and play golf he can pick up the slack until then.

Not quite. Ask the WalMart workers who are earning minimum wage while the Walton heirs who never worked a day in their lives enjoy the profits that the workers provide them. The only place those workers can afford to shop is at WalMart and many of them are on the government dole.

And the majority of Walmart workers earning minimum wage are paid too much...they're dumb!

Since the congress is so good at making new laws why don't they just make a law that puts a Military person the head of DOD...????

God forbid. What do you want a military coup! Of course based on the situation today that might not be so bad.
