Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist becomes a Democrat

Charlie Crist, seen with his wife Carole, announces on Twitter that he has joined the Democratic Party.

Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist announced on Twitter Friday that he has joined the Democratic Party.

Crist was first elected to the governorship as a Republican in 2006. He ran for the U.S. Senate as an independent in 2010, losing a three-way race to Republican Marco Rubio.

Crist’s tweet read:"Proud and honored to join the Democratic Party in the home of President @Barack Obama!"

His message included a photo of him holding up a Florida voter registration application with his wife, Carole, next to him.

Crist signed the papers changing his affiliation from independent to Democrat at a Christmas reception at The White House, according to the Tampa Bay Times

Crist spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte that nominated Obama for a second term, and had campaigned for Obama's reelection in Florida.

A message left for Crist by The Associated Press wasn't immediately returned Friday night.

Crist, 56, is viewed as a potential Democratic challenger to Florida's Republican Gov. Rick Scott in 2014.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I dunno, Obama is in the midst of proving himself as an accomplished politician. You've got to admit, he's got Boehner running around and around not knowing what to do next. Generally, that's known as check-and-mate.

Good for him. He was always too reasonable to be a Republican. As the Republican Party gets crazier and farther out there, anybody with any sense at all will abandon their sinking ship.

Crist was a moderate Republican trapped in a Republican Party that was becoming increasingly batch-it crazy. He was a member of a party in which moderates are being hunted, hated, demonized, derided and demonized as being "Republicans In Name Only" (RINOs).

He didn't ultimately leave the Republican Party. The party left him. It all but threw him out bodily.

That's what tends to happen when you start two open-ended wars in two different countries while refusing to raise the taxes to pay for them, as George Dumb-Oh Bush did -- you go trillions of dollars into debt.

News flash, wars are not "self-funding", they do not "break even" and they never, ever "make a profit".

Also, wars are not fought by the "pweshus and speshul pwivate sector", they are fought by things called "governments". And governments are funded by things called "taxes".

Bush bragged that he "never raised taxes", so instead of sensibly raising taxes to pay for his wars, he went around the world borrowing trillions of dollars from foreign governments by selling U.S. debt instruments, conveniently forgetting that the money he borrowed would eventually have to be paid back with interest.

That's 16 Trillion in debt and the reason it is so high is because of President Bush and his 2 unpaid wars he dumped on President Obama while also giving everyone a Tax break on credit card paid for by China. Also GOP Republicans have blocked every positive thing President Obama has tried to do for the economy and people out of work. Even so, every year Bush was in office there was a loss of jobs and every year President Obama has been in office, there has been an increase in jobs. So the only failed President I see is Bush. By the way, President Clinton inherited a mess from Bush Senior and handed Bush Jr a ballanced budget and a good economy. Bush Jr. handed President Obama a failed economy, 2 wars unpaid for, bursting bubble, and everyone that is on welfare. President Obama is turning all that around so that the next Republican President can screw it up again.

You do realize that the President can be in one place and do something that effects things clear accross the world right? They invented cell phones and conference calling you know! If your so worried about the fiscal cliff and all, maybe you should tell Boehner that he lost and President Obama won so the people voted that they want it done President Obama's way, not Boehners. So Boehner needs to deal with that and not hold the people hostage by not passing the the Bush tax cuts for the middle class and poor. He needs to start doing what he was elected to do by the people and not by the rich. Basically BOEHNER is the one who needs to start getting SERIOUS.

Reps used to love him, now they hate him....so fickle

THe Right Wing Extremist in the Republican have wrecked their party...even the leadership knows this, thats why they are taking them off important committees, why Jim DeMint cut and ran, why they lost the election and seats in both the house and senate (Legitimate rape...Are you Fing kidding me?), why they drove the more moderate wing out to the detriment of the party.

Why they drove me out.

It is simple...

stop the bigotry against blacks women gay people

stop protecting the very rich (FYI I am in the top 1% easily)

Stop pandering to the so called christian right (Who are not christians at all)

Stop trying to limit voting with draconian measures

Stop creating demons...for instance it is not Muslims, it is Extremist that are the problem.

Realize that everyone needs a chance, the best opportunity they can get.

Then maybe you will be relevant again.

Once you graduate High School and start working, you'll realize what a boss and workers are. The President has people who know how to do their job better than Obama does. They report to him, give him suggestions when he needs it, and otherwise run the country for him. Worst boss in the world is one trying to micromanage. No, brenda. The reason why we are $16 trillion in debt is because both Republicans and Democrats are pointing their fingers and blaming it all on the other party while both sides continue to appove trillions in spending and debt creation. Middle-ground politicians tend to gravitate towards the ascendant party. I seem to recall a couple of defections from the Democratic party a few years ago. Now, we are seeing a Republican jumping ship.

Are there others thinking of switching sides?

But, the pendulum always swings both ways. Today the Republicans are looking [and no doubt feeling] like the political equivalent of the Dodo Bird. But are nation hasn't seen the absolute demise of a political party in generations, and I don't see it happening to the Republicans.

We got rid of Charlie once....and we will do it again!!

Gov. Crist handpicked Jim Greer to head the Florida Republican Party. Despite multiple calls for Mr. Greer’s resignation by fellow Republicans, due to extravagant spending at the party’s expense, Gov. Crist defended Mr. Greer. Mr. Greer is now facing six counts of grand theft, fraud and money laundering. He is accused of secretly setting up a shell company, Victory Strategies, and signing a deal that would give Victory Strategies 10% of GOP donations – a deal that Gov. Crist allegedly approved.

Prior to serving as governor, Gov. Crist was the state’s attorney general. As attorney general, Gov. Crist was criticized for failing to investigate those with whom he had political or financial ties. First, he failed to investigate state contractor GDX for leaking the personal information of 100,000 state employees. GDX had been subcontracted by computer company Convergys to index electronic personnel records but when GDX outsourced the job overseas, the personal information of up to 100,000 state employees may have been exposed. Convergys had close ties to then-Attorney General Crist. The company had hired his advisor as a lobbyist and was a donor to the Republican Party. Attorney General Crist dropped the investigation.

As attorney general, Gov. Crist also failed to fully investigate boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman. Mr. Pearlman, who ran a $300 million investment scam, was eventually indicted by federal authorities and pled guilty of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering charges. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. A lawsuit brought by investors claimed Gov. Crist and Florida regulators knew about the scheme but turned a blind eye for four years. The suit alleges Mr. Pearlman got a pass from the then-attorney general because he had donated at least $12,000 to Gov. Crist’s campaign.

NY Times takes down Charlie Crist over Everglades-U.S. Sugar deal

http://cltampa.com/dailyloaf/archives/2010/03/08/ny-times-takes-down-charlie-crist-over-everglades-us-sugar-deal#.UMMrueTAfqM

Those plans have been revised since then, with the state reducing its purchase of U.S. Sugar's land to 72,800 acres for $536 million. But according to a blockbuster story written today in the New York Timesby investigative reporters Don Van Natta Jr. and Damien Cave, the state and Governor Charlie Crist were suckered into an awful deal that is "rescuing the fortunes of U.S. Sugar", but setting back the plan of fully restoring the Everglades.

The story, coming in at over 4.200 words, is critical of Crist, and the state's Department of Environmental Protection, for paying way more than they should have for the land.

But internal district documents revealed that the land had been overvalued by the two firms that performed the independent appraisals. Both relied on figures from 2004 to 2008, when a speculative real estate market had prices soaring.

Crist announces scaled-back deal to buy U.S. Sugar land

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/breakingnews/sfl-0401-everglades,0,3807183.story

This is the second time that economic reality has forced Crist to scale back his ambitious plan to buy out U.S. Sugar, originally envisioned last summer as a $1.75-billion, 187,000-acre transaction.

Taxpayers in the water district's 17 counties -- including Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade -- will pay for the deal.

Miccosukee Tribe attorney Dexter Lehtinen, who has long championed Everglades causes, said the cost of the new deal still threatens to set back Everglades restoration 15 years.

Lehtinen called the scaled-down version a "bait and switch" from Crist's first proposal in June to buy all of U.S. Sugar's assets and move sugar cane farming out of the way of Everglades restoration.

"I'm flabbergasted that just to get (his) name on a press release the governor will torpedo Everglades restoration," said Lehtinen, who was part of a legal challenge to the previous deal. "This thing stinks from one side to the other."

With the loony Republicans going so far to the right Jeb Bush will be next to become a Democrat. There is no way Jeb will get the Republican nomination for president with the TEA nuts like DeMint and Norquist leading the way. Even Chris Christie has little chance now with his hug of Obama. To refresh everyone's memory that was the knock on Charlie Crist by TEA nuts here in Florida. He had the audacity to shake Obama's hand and hug him for the stimulus money to save jobs of police, firemen, and teachers at the low point of the recession.

1- when the GOP is so far right, there is no way moderate republicans can make it...

2- our government needs to get back to work..... 31 days since election..... 23 days until cliff.... and nothing has been done... and that's on both parties

3- every time the GOP gets embarrassed, some azzhat tea partier gets on here and blames the ENTIRE debt, deficit, and lack of congressional work, and economy entirely on Obama.... you guys can't be that stupid, can you?

4- Gov Scott has screwed up the state of Fla so bad that there is no way he can get re elected... none.... a chimp can beat him:

-he removed insurance regulation and homeowners insurance has doubled.... they can raise 15% every year without review

-he killed PIP law and now people who get hurt cant afford medical care after a car accident....

-he waged a crazy over compensating war against medical practices where he removed all HIPPAA protection and 4th amendment protections... any law enforcement officer can now, without warrant, enter any medical facility at will and examine the records of that facility and whatever they choose to seize they can do so... think about that

-he's trying to circumvent medicaid....

-hes blown a bunch of the unbalanced budget on numerous lawsuits between the state, citizens and the federal government...

Charlie Crist will almost certainly be back as governor...

anything is better than what we got when the AVERAGE household family of 4 insurance bill for health / car / homeowners / flood is $2400 a MONTH... no food, rent, car payment, clothes.... thats just government mandated insurance in Fla.... $30k a year that we are REQUIRED to buy... it's the Matrix in real life....

it was less than half of that when Scott took office and bent over for his corporate buddies... it's like Russian government politics... somebody gets elected to state office... all his buddies get to fleece the peasants

fxck Rick Scott

MilkTit, tax evasion is illegal. I believe what you are attempting to reference is that the 2% pay a reduced percentage of income versus the middle class. In actuality, those paying the reduced percentage make up less than 1% of the 2%. In order to eliminate this misconception about the 2%, we need to raise the capital gains and dividend rates to personal income rates. Better yet, we should implement a flat tax for everyone. I would have a lot more confidence in our economy/society if those not paying any taxes made some sort of contribution. That would make too much sense though.

aharryreid. Man you sure know how to open yourself up for a hay maker. First of all, Not all pour people are stupid. Unless your in the Tea party. More times then not, people with a collage Degree can't walk and chew gum at the same time. They are given the better Jobs just because they have a peace of paper that said they passed a test. It is truly stupid to give a high paying job to some just because of that. And the funny thing is most of the time the Degree isn't even in line with the job. Then these same guys have to go to the people that don't have a degree that has learned by coming up trough the ranks and can do every job in the place and ask him how to do the job.

And less talk about stupid people. The Reps have gotten people to vote for tax breaks for the rich, that let the rich pollute there drinking water, air, land. Talk about stupid. These Tea party people are un educated people that the Koch Brothers can lead around by the noise. A guy with money can get these people to do anything for them and give them nothing in return. That shows how smart the Rep/tea party people are. As long has they can have there guns they are happy. They go to church and are told what to do there also. Rep's are lemmings and nothing more. As we just seen, they will follow there leaders right over the cliff.

I for one welcome Charlie Crist to the Dem party. I welcome any other forward thinking Rep that shouldn't be a Rep to the Dem's. For these are the people that know what is good for America. They know it was the Rep's that put us in this mess in the first place. They know the people that lost there jobs and had to go on Welfare are hard working Americans that lost there Jobs because of the So called Americans that would rather invest in Communist country's to make a quick buck rather then invest in America. As long as they can get slave wages they will go there every time. So we Real Americans need to stop buying things from over seas and buy American and put our country first.

You are obviously bitter you never obtained a degree, or more than likely, you determined early on that you are not smart enough to obtain a degree. Two year degrees or technical schools do not count. I applaud you for making that determination. As for the content, I'll address one point. I think the rest of your response stands on its own to substantiate my joke. IF the republicans influenced everyone, including democrats, to vote for tax cuts for the rich, you are easily influenced and incapable of thinking on your own. Obviously the dumb people turned out to vote. Obama is in office after all.

Well hjack, I know the IQ of those close to Romney was hurting, especially after reading all of the stories about the liberal media polls being way off.

guess what? They weren't.

I wonder how many votes Romney got simply as votes against Obama? Had he not gotten those, the landslide would have been heard around the world.

Another point, those with good IQ's would not have voted for Romney, as he never provided much in the way of details. He was also a huge flip flopper. I too would love to see the average IQ of voters from both parties. the way the GOP candidates kept putting their foot in their mouths, it is obvious that something is lacking in that party.

Patriotic. I am starting to feel like these people are starting to do what is good for this country and not just what is good for the people at the top. Americans are sick of the Rich trying to buy the elections. This election show that clearly. Now if we can just get all the money out of politics. We would all be better off is all elections were public funded. Then we would have a Representative Government again. We could get Congress to do what WE THE PEOPLE want done Not what WE THE RICH want done. Sure the rich have the money to spend, But we have our votes and I for one will never sell my country out so Charles and David Koch can make $4 billion more in profits this year. We can stop them like we did this year. Now we have to stop them state by state. Koch's Own WI and they think they are going to Own Michigan. But not this time.

I will tell you one thing A Harry. My parents didn't have the money to send me to collage. Out of seven of us kids only 2 of us finished High School. I worked for GM for 10 years and always had the highest paying jobs where I worked. One Thing I got tired of is being called to Engineering to Solve Problems the " Smart people with the Degree couldn't" And I mean this guy was so smart that his hair hurt. But there is one thing you can't learn in Collage. Common sense. People that never ever worked with there hands and made a living with there hands can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Sure they can take a test and look very good with books. But they can't solve a problem for @!$%#. If these guys are so smart, then why did they come to me to solve problems they went to collage for? Some of us build things and some of us steal things Like your man Mitten. What did he learn from collage? How to steal from working people. But the smart people didn't fall for his lies and it is driving people like you crazy.

School and transferred to a 4 year college and earned a BS Degree ( N0 student loans, but working at a bank paid for it! while a student), Went back and got my MS Degree after 6 years and now have gotten stuck at +28 credits toward my Doctorate. Because of age I've decided that is far enough at my age. Nobody gave me anything even though good old Mitt told today's youth to just have Mommy and Daddy pay for it! Right ! ( Like most middle class families could just run to the bank a write a check like he could!) So out of touch with reality is the right and most of your posts are likewise!

I am not aware of a single colleague that is a member of a union. Furthermore, I never stated only the better educated have the highest I.Q. However, there is a correlation between level of education and I.Q. Thanks for playing.

              #1.80 - Sat Dec 8, 2012 3:46 PM EST

ASSharry: The joke is on you again. I never once called the union in 10 years to fight my battles. Not once. I earned my way. I was paid just under $50 K for my idles to save money and make the line run better. I have the Respect of my foremen and all the Managers in the plant. The Unions never did a thing for me. Something you don't know is I started my own business in 1986 and ran it until 2007. During that time I was a Rep, for a while. I voted for Reagan and HW Bush. But then I remembered the Golden rule. Something your were never Learned. For all the money I made, I wan't happy. Having all the money and no friends, well that wan't the way I was raised. And I don't mean just by my parents. Where I lived everyone was your parents. We all watched out for one another. If I ever did something wrong, My parents knew about it before I got home. One think I learned is you can't be an honest business man in this country. I learned to play hardball and dirty. I found myself acting Like Mitt Romney and didn't care who I ran over to get what I wanted. Thankfully God Stepped in and I was Rear ended while waiting to make a left hand turn. The lady was doing 55 when she hit me at a stand still. I was laid up for 3 years. Lost everything and had to start all over with nothing. However I never let myself get like I was again. So you set back and joke all you want. What have you done with your degree? Who so you work for? I would like to know if you have ever done a honest days work in your life. Have you ever put your life on the line while doing a job? I say this to you. If you have never worked one day in a factory, you have no right saying a bad word about those of that have. Because Big business does not care a bit about the working men and women that work for them. They could care less weather these people are safe or not. All they care about is keeping that line moving, at any cost. That is why there is a need for unions. Not everyone can stand up for themselves. After about 9 1/2 years I had enough of doing the Engineers Job for half the money. I got tired of people that didn't know how to do what I do, telling me how to do my job. I remember one day, we had just had to change foremen. So this new guy came to me on his first day and started telling me how to do my job. I handed him the tools and told him to show me how it was done. The Stupid Redneck couldn't do. But he had a degree, in stupidity. I guess you can be to smart for your own good.

              Nobel Laureates Back Obama

Nearly 70 Nobel Prize-winning scientists lend their support to the President’s re-election.

              http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/32921/title/Nobel-Laureates-Back-Obama/

And as for the neurological and physiological differences between Conservatives and Liberals:

Differences in Conservative and Liberal Brains
16 peer-reviewed studies show liberals and conservatives physiologically different

              Excerpts:

Reliance on quick, efficient, and "low effort" thought processes yields conservative ideologies, while effortful and deliberate reasoning yields liberal ideologies.

Liberals have more tolerance to uncertainty (bigger anterior cingulate cortex), and conservatives have more sensitivity to fear (bigger right amygdala).

When faced with a conflict, liberals are more likely than conservatives to alter their habitual response when cues indicate it is necessary.

Bright minds and dark attitudes: lower cognitive ability predicts greater prejudice through right-wing ideology and low intergroup contact.

Hell the Attorneys have a very strong lobby. Both of these fight for you, trying to stop caps on law suites and Dr. for Caps. Its just a matter of what is best for you. I Will be the first to say unions screwed up. Like the Reps they learned and are changing. You just have to look at The NRA. That is a Union. Make no mistake, It just happens to be a union for the GUN makers, They all belong to it and support it. Look what they have done for us. I do not agree with everything the Dem's are for. I like some of what the Rep's use to stand for. But not that the Tea part has taken over the Rep. party. Witch is to say the Koch Brothers have taken it over, well I have nothing in common anymore. And Harry, If you are Dr. or an attorney. What have you done to help your fellow man? My Dr. Gives me one med. That pushes my sugar # up, and then gives me another to bring them down. Big help. I know several Attorneys personally. They can spell really good but if they couldn't practice Law they couldn't get a job in a Self serve gas station. I had a Customer tell me that once and I have sense learned that he was right. I truly hope if your a Dr. That you are a good one. I hope if your a Attorney. That your a good one. I know I was a very good Builder.

Reading some of the mean spirited right wing posts on this vine today is a reminder of why Charlie Crist joined the Democratic Party.

I say Good for Governor Crist, he has shown us that he cares about the citizens of Florida and all American citizens. The Republican Party he leaves behind is not the Republican Party we all grew up knowing. The new GOP is controlled by self serving extremists and big money special interests and no longer represents the wants or needs of the American people.

I hope this is just the beginning of Republican defections. There must be many Republicans out there that can't stomach the extreamism of the new Republican Party. I hope they jump ship and join us Democrats in restoring the things the greedy Republicans stole from us, Americas strength, honor and vitality.

May the "Greedy Old Party" die a slow and painful death.

I think we will see many more defections as more and more people what to stand up and do what is right for there country and not just what is good for Koch Industry, Walmart and others like them. Walmart has always been sucking on Government's tit. They pioneered the hire part time only, Let there workers live on welfare for there Insurance. Let the government help them pay there rent. Keep them in poverty and never let them make it the middle class, While we at the top keep all of the money. I have stopped shopping at walmart because of that. In Michigan we have a Michigan based company that thinks its good business to take care of there workers, Because there workers take care of them. Who would have ever thought of that.

I hope we see more Rep's jump ship and get off the gravy train of the Koch brothers and start do represent there people again. I just saw how much money Koch's spent trying to get there man elected in Michigan. Didn't work. I say we 53% as it turns out should boycott Koch Products and hit them where they hurt, in the wallet. But this post will never be published because I said that.

Just goes to show that Politicians are dumber than the people who elect them.

I say we abandon political parties completely, ban them all. This group think nonsense is not good for the country, and it's not good for the electorate.

He took Obama's stimulus money and used it to shore up his state's budget when he was Florida's republican governor. Looking back he hurt Obama just like many other has been republican governors. I won't vote for him again, ever. He claims he never raised Florida's taxes. He raised all kinds of FEES and added many we never had on the books. He is a stuffed shirt.

Maybe he decided to make sure there was only a two-way race in 2014, rather than running as an Independent again??? As far as I'm concerned, I agree with Baldman. I've been a GDI since 1969. Of course one way to fix the problems with our federal elections, and you could try to get a similar amendment to your various state constitutions, is for every citizen to get active in the Popular Amendment Movement and help petition for a Constitutional Convention to pass the two constitutional amendments posted at www.faircampaignreform.us. I've been promoting this since I helped some other Newsvine posters and other concerned citizens develop these two amendments back in July/August 2010 and I am the sole funder of the website as my contribution to the cause. PAM is a total grassroots organization, with NO national organization, NO fund-raising, NO wealthy backers. Get involved today and maybe we can change our federal elections system before the 2014 /2016 elections. It sure would be nice to have only a four month-long campaign season.

Petition for US Constitutional Amendment For Election Reform

We, the undersigned US citizens, duly registered voters in our respective states/territories, do hereby petition for our state to approve the following amendment to the United States Constitution by the method noted below.

                  Election Reform:
                  1. Abolish the Electoral College (Repeal Amendment 12)
                  2. ONE NATIONAL primary date to be held on the Tuesday eight (8) weeks prior to the General Election day for Congressional offices and for the President. Candidate petitions must be filed with the local/state elections boards 60 days prior to the Primary Election date. Federal election petitions shall be uniform in every state and shall include a “contract with the voters” that spells out clearly what that candidate stands for on all issues that they may have to address in elected office. They shall be held accountable in court for breach of that contract if elected and any/all terms are not met.
                  3. NO campaigning allowed for any elective federal office more than 60 days prior to the National Primary Date.
                  4. NO campaign contribution shall be donated to any candidate of more than $200 from an individual or $500 maximum from a family (spouses/children living in the same household.) No donations shall be made to a candidate more than sixty days prior to the primary date. No candidate shall contribute from their own funds more than 60% of the total donations from other private individuals.
                  5. NO campaign contribution from any PAC, corporation, union, non-profit organization, special interest group, etc. shall be allowed for any elected federal office.
                  6. NO third party campaigning (separate PAC ads, corporate ads, etc.) for/against any candidate shall be allowed at any time during or before the election season.
                  7. NO party conventions shall be held to select the presidential candidates. The selection must be done at the ballot box in the primary election.
                  8. The One Man/One Vote Supreme Court ruling shall be enforced by this Amendment, namely that NO federal candidate selection shall be by any means other than the ballot box on Primary/General Election Dates.
                  9. National Party Organizations shall NOT raise money for or donate to specific candidates of their party prior to the dates outlined above.
                  10. PAC’s shall NOT be granted tax-exempt status by the IRS, and any non-profit organization who uses their funding for political purposes shall lose their tax-exempt status.
                  11. All lobbyists shall be outlawed from influencing Congress at all times.

This amendment shall be approved ONLY by State Constitutional Conventions to be called within 90 days of this petition being submmitted to a state’s Secretary of State. A minimum of 25% of the registered voters in each state shall be required to further this petition to the respective Secretary of State.

A real mix of common sense and insanity here. Many of the points make sense, but #3 needs work -- there's no definition of what "campaigning" is. We'd probably agree that buying television commercials is campaigning, but what giving speeches in person? A congressman sending letters to constituents? A lot of what an elected official does day to day might be considered campaigning -- how does a challenger compete?

                  # 11 is also kind of crazy. Lobbyists have a bad name -- but every time you write a letter to your congressman, you're lobbying.

One national primary would be a very bad idea. It would be impossible to campaign nationwide for all but the richest of candidates.

I would support a 5 date plan, where each state is placed in one of 5 groups, and those groups rotate for each election. Each Group would be randomly chosen from geographic areas so that each date was balanced.

If you had one date many of those ultimately elected would not have been. Many came from behind when other candidates were found unfit by their own parties. Having them over a period allows for local campaigning, vetting and better examination. But compacting them into 5 groups of 10 states over a 10 week period would work nicely IMO.

The limit on how long you can campaign its both unworkable and a violation of free speech.

Money contributions limited only by those over 18 not by family.

I do not ever contribute to a campaign that I am not eligible to vote in. IE I will not contribute to a Senate campaign in another state.

Upon further review, I changed my mind. These proposals are "democracy" not "republican form of government". And we all know "democracy" is just a short step from total chaos. We've already let Progressives gut the Constitution by changing the way Senators are elected, and in doing so completely silenced every statehouse in the country with respect to national policy. The other proposals regarding elections are thinly veiled attacks at free speech. Like it or not, we can't go half way. If something crazy like this were to come up, we might as well scrap the Constitution and start over.

Frankly True: I have suggested the single national primary to my personal acquaintances, but I feel there needs to be a "tweak". The staged primaries we already have for President in each party do have the advantage of revealing more about each candidate over time, but with serious injustices to voters in both early voting and late voting states. A voter in an early voting state may prefer a candidate who later drops out, thus losing their vote. A voter in a late voting state has fewer candidates to vote for, and often the winner is already determined (by delegates won earlier). The solution, in my opinion, is for each party to keep the primaries they already have, as "beauty contests" only, for the press to follow. Then, on a single date two weeks before the earlier party convention, all states would have the binding primary for each party. All candidates who were on any earlier ballot would be in the binding primary in the same states, even if they have ceased campaigning (although this situation would make "dropping out" less likely). Of course, official delegate selection would be based upon the final primary result, although pundits would still be free to track "presumed" delegate counts.

The advantage to the early "beauty contest" voter is that their favorite candidate may come back on the ballot in the final primary, or if that candidate is no longer their favorite, they can vote for another one. The advantage to the late voter is that, even if their favorite has dropped out (or been disgraced by a scandal), they can still vote for that candidate or any other. Also, if a dropped out candidate has been "redeemed" by subsequent events, that candidate still has a chance.

It would be even better if all these primaries, and the general election, included an instant runoff (ranked choice) voting provision, so that more initial votes for dark horse candidates would be visible to the press, even if those candidates did not win. And the Electoral College is another matter: the simplest reform that would balance state suffrage with national popular suffrage would be to add another 100 "national" electoral votes, which would be allocated proportionately to the national popular vote (having 100 makes the math easier). Any comments or analysis of this idea would be of interest also.

Charlie Crist was a great governor for Florida. I have nothing bad to say about him.

I don't live in Florida and I wish that 'parties' were extinguished. I just think people should stand by their own beliefs.

But I was totally amused by the picture of him holding up papers lol.

America needs a stronger presence from the left. Currently if your a labeled a leftist in America it only means you disagree with the right, this is not the case in most industrialized nations. The American worker is a puppet on a string manipulated by both sides. The Republicans attack the working class and the Democrats increasingly ignore it. Time for a change.

What, having Obama as the comrade in chief isn't enough of a leftist presence? Save the poor, pitiful me worker/puppet drivel. You are responsible for your lot and success (or lack thereof) in life; no one else.

True Jimbo Joker. The republicons are Batchit crazy and the Democrats are now where the republicans used to be. There is no left wing in American politics.

What do American workers want? Clean air, water that does not catch on fire, affordable health care for all, safe working conditions, being able to retire and not be forced to eat dog food, and a living wage. Walmart does not supply a living wage, but Costco does.

Charlie Crist was never a right-winger, and he made the right move. It's simply too hard to win a major office as an independent. Maybe he'll even bring some sense to the democratic party, which right now is very confused. The republican party is beyond hope.

You know Joe Biden "killed" him.....Spector was facing a tough Republican primary opponent and was unlikely to win re-election.....In steps Joe Biden...They needed one more vote to pass ObamaCare....he convinced poor Arlen to switch parties with the promise that the All-Powerful Obama would make sure he won the election as a Damocrat....they got their vote from him and were done with him.....Under the bus you go....Poor, poor Arlen Spector....he lost the Democrat Primary election, 0bama refused to campaign for him knowing Spector would lose and he died of a broken heart, P.0bama didn't love him no more.....

Arlen Specter was smart enough to know the truth early on. He said that he wouldn't let his political future be determined by a tiny swath of the electorate. The TeaParty was- IS- a small, extremist minority of the electorate with waaaay outsized influence over the Republican primary process. THAT is what is destroying the Republican Party. This small, extremist group of people is preventing intelligent, reasonable, sane republicans from running in the general elections by making sure that only goofballs survive primaries. Either that, or people like Mitt Romney have to pretend to be right wing extremists, and that haunts them in the general election.

Crist is to the left of the RINOS. Even the commie Palm Beach Post admitted in an OpEd years ago he was delivering more for the Democrats as governor than the Democrat he beat would have.
