Key Republicans raise new questions about potential Susan Rice nomination

UPDATED 4:24 p.m. ET -- President Barack Obama’s possible choice of United Nations envoy Susan Rice to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared to be in greater jeopardy Wednesday after one key Republican senator broadened the scope of questions about her record. Another GOP senator implied she was too much of a personal and party loyalist to head the State Department and urged the president to “step back” from the idea of nominating Rice.

Rice went to Capitol Hill Wednesday for a second consecutive day of meetings with skeptical GOP senators, meeting with Susan Collins of Maine and Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is slated to become the ranking Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and would have a key role in the confirmation hearing for a secretary of state nominee.

UN ambassador Susan Rice has become a lightning rod for criticism from Republicans who blame her for more than one security failure abroad. But President Obama continues to support Rice, who is expected to become Obama's choice to replace Hillary Clinton as the next Secretary of State. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Until Wednesday, Rice had come under Republican fire primarily for her role in speaking for the Obama administration in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

But in comments to reporters after meeting with Rice, Collins expanded the criticism of Rice to include her potential role in protecting the American embassies in Kenya and Somalia that were hit by al Qaida attacks in 1998, when Rice served as assistant secretary of state for African affairs.

Collins said she was “very troubled by the fact that we seem not to have learned from the 1998 bombings of two of our embassies in Africa at the time when Ambassador Rice was the assistant secretary for African affairs. Those bombings in 1998 resulted in the loss of life of 12 Americans as well as many other foreign nationals.”

She said, “What troubles me so much is the Benghazi attack in many ways echoes the attacks on those embassies in 1998, when Susan Rice was head of the African region for our State Department. In both cases the ambassadors begged for additional security” but she said, as with the Sept. 11 attack on the consulate in Benghazi, those requests were turned down by the State Department.

Collins said that Rice told her “she would have to refresh her memory” of the 1998 events and that she was not directly involved in turning down the request for embassy security in 1998.

But Collins seemed dissatisfied with Rice’s response, saying, “Surely given her position as the assistant secretary for African affairs, she had to be aware of the general threat assessment and of the ambassadors’ repeated requests for more security.”

Sen. Susan Collins talks about her meeting with Ambassador Susan Rice and says Sen. John Kerry would be a better Secretary of State. Collins also said it's premature to reach a judgment on the confirmation.

Collins said that before she could support Rice’s nomination, “I would need to have additional information.”

Collins, the senior Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, is up for re-election in 2014. Obama carried her state in the presidential election with 56 percent of the vote.

After his meeting with Rice, Corker seemed to be sending a plea or a warning to Obama to not pick his U.N. envoy as the next secretary of state.

“I know that at some point I may play a semi-important role in who the next secretary of state may be,” Corker told reporters at the Capitol. “I would just ask the president to step back for a moment and realize that all of us here hold the secretary of state to a very different standard than most Cabinet members.”

Corker said, “We want someone of independence.”

He added that “all of us … can become close to people and have loyal soldiers,” implying that Rice was one of those personal loyalists and therefore wouldn’t be right for the job. It was an echo of his comment Tuesday that “when I hear Susan (Rice) talk, she sounds to me like she'd be a great head of the Democratic National Committee.”

At a meeting at the White House with his Cabinet members, with Rice present, in response to a question from a reporter about how senators were treating Rice, Obama said Wednesday, "Susan Rice is extraordinary. I couldn't be prouder of the job that she's done."

At Obama’s Nov. 14 press conference, after Rice came under fire from Republican senators John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, the president gave a vigorous defense of his U.N. envoy.

“When they go after the U.N. ambassador, apparently because they think she’s an easy target, then they’ve got a problem with me,” he said. “And should I choose, if I think that she would be the best person to serve America in the capacity of the State Department, then I will nominate her.”

McCain, Graham, and Ayotte have all said they’d oppose Rice if Obama nominates her, but the comments Wednesday from Collins and Corker appeared to reflect a growing skepticism in Republican ranks.

When a reporter asked Collins about Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., as a potential secretary of state, she replied, “I think John Kerry would be an excellent appointment and would be easily confirmed by his colleagues.”

This comment added to the apparent GOP support for Kerry.

On Tuesday McCain told Fox News, “John Kerry came within a whisker of being president of the United States. I think works in his favor (as a nominee to be secretary of state). But I would love to hear him make the case. But I don`t have anything in his background like this tragedy in Benghazi that would make me really want to carefully examine the whole situation.”

For a nomination that hasn’t yet happened and may not happen at all, the potential Rice nomination is generating enormous political heat and noise. That’s partly because it’s shaping up as a nose-to-nose test of Obama’s presidential clout and credibility in the aftermath of his Nov. 6 victory. But it’s also partly because the political futures of Collins, Kerry and others could be on the line.

LOL, and Mr. Chris Matthews continues the Progressive rhetoric that the CIA was at fault for providing Ambassador Rice "bad info" when in fact, the CIA talking points indicated that the attack on the Benghazi consulate WAS PLANNED and the "talking points" were modified by this administration:
Heya, Mr. Matthews.....maybe you should get a job at Disneyland.

Susan Rice's comments on Benghazi Should have nothing, no bearing whatsoever, relative to Her qualifications as "Secretary of State". She gave very ambiguous information to the American Public, as the intelligence Community wished, and furnished Her. McCain and Turkey Neck Graham very well know this. The CIA, and Military, will not allow these two old "glory hounds" to compromise some covert operation they have going in Libya. McCain and Graham both are becoming embarrassingly incompetent. The new lady from NH has stupidly hitched Her wagon to a pair of old, and very weak, self sucking goats. In the end, all of 'em will come away from this looking like the glorious fools they are, and, if the President picks Her, Susan Rice will be confirmed as the new SOS.

Let's talk about the story she read in the British tabloids about Qaddafi giving his troops viagra to help them rape women. (Source, it was on the news, but you can Google "Rice-viagra-UN"). Based on a British tabloid (they are the most notorious of all) she brought it up before the UN, with no proof, and made a laughing stock out of our Country. We don't need our Country run by quacks in the tabloids and idiots who believe them.

So, we should be able to anticipate all terrorist attacks, whether they occur on our soil or at our embassies or consulates? Then we should have anticipate 9-11, and been able to defend against it. We should have been aware of the impending attacks on the Cole or the military barracks, and prevented it, right? If so, we better go back and hang all those responsible out to dry, as we are with Ms. Rice. Otherwise, let's learn and move on.

I don't think the good ole boys (and girls) of the GOP learned anything from their loss in the Presidential election. Rather than continue to target Rice and try to make something out of it, why not consult with her and others involved in this situation and devise a plan to avoid problems in the future. I suspect the vast majority look and McCain and the rest involved, and wish they would find something constructive to - like find constructive ways to deal with the problems this country faces.

Once again, the only "lie" concerning Rice's Sunday morning talk show is the lie that Rice intentionally misled America. Those who attack Ambassador Rice are the liars, and are helping the Al Qaeda by spreading these anti-American lies. They are despicable. This is the transcript. I wish to God that conservatives would stop believing whatever Fox tells them and try looking up the facts for themselves. As in the Obama birth certificate, the majority of America thinks that the rightwing wackos are just being wacko on this issue - check out the polling after you read the below to learn the facts.

GREGORY: Well, let’s talk-- talk about-- well, you talked about this as spontaneous. Can you say definitively that the attacks on-- on our consulate in Libya that killed ambassador Stevens and others there security personnel, that was spontaneous, was it a planned attack? Was there a terrorist element to it?

MS. RICE: Well, let us-- let me tell you the-- the best information we have at present. First of all, there’s an FBI investigation which is ongoing. And we look to that investigation to give us the definitive word as to what transpired. But putting together the best information that we have available to us today our current assessment is that what happened in Benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what had just transpired hours before in Cairo, almost a copycat of-- of the demonstrations against our facility in Cairo, which were prompted, of course, by the video. What we think then transpired in Benghazi is that opportunistic extremist elements came to the consulate as this was unfolding. They came with heavy weapons which unfortunately are readily available in post revolutionary Libya. And it escalated into a much more violent episode. Obviously, that’s-- that’s our best judgment now. We’ll await the results of the investigation.

As Rachel Maddow pointed out yesterday, the Republicans would love to get John Kerry out of the Senate. Not only would it free up a very prestigious position within the Senate, the GOP thinks they could get Scott Brown back as Senator.

The whole GOP attack against Susan Rice is not about Susan Rice, its about getting another Senator for the GOP.

While the press is thinking the GOP is playing tiddly winks about Susan Rice's role in the Benghazi story, they are really playing hardball politics, tri-dimensional chess style.

For many of the GOP, the fact that Susan Rice is black is just an added bonus. Particularly because they see her as a career diplomat who has risen through the ranks, she obviously is "not very bright."

The GOP wants Kerry so they can make a play at his Senate seat. That's to bottom line. There strategies are so obvious - Party over country.

When a CNN correspondent asked Senator Ayotte if she would oppose Rice if she was nominated, the senator responded that she would have to wait and see how things developed. Interpretation - she had to wait and see what instructions she would receive from the Party. Is there anyone in the Republican Party who is cappable of making his or her own decision?

Bengazi was begging for additional security and when turned down - how many times?....then they get hit and everyone in Washington ducks for cover.....and send out the UN person...who has nothing at all to do with it. Wow what a great way to cover your tracks...in this day and age of instant communications we cannot be that inept not to see it was a planned attack and all the administration is trying to do is sweep it under the rug until the American population looses it's 15 minute memory.

John Kerry - as Sec of State - this is a man that came out and threw his medals away .....he did not agree with the Viet Nam policy - then WHY did he enlist in the first place......He was not drafted like many of us...he made a choice to go into the military....then to denounce our country and throw away his medals....SHAME on him ...just because he has been in the congress all these years - does not make him a true patriot....only someone who wants an easy job and coast on the taxpayers....

Susan Rice is not just a partisan hack but is also completely supportive of Obama because of Race. In 2008 she accused Hillary Clinton of not being ready to be President because Hillary voted in favor of our intervention in Iraq, and had spoken out about Iraq having WMD's.

Sue Collins is far from being partisan but knows that this Susan Rice is not a good fit for our country.

Obama and the media made a big thing about Romney's 47% remark, Obama will never make a remark like that but his actions speak much louder than words, he could care less about bipartisanship and the 47% of the voters that did not vote for him, and are representative of the citizens that do not agree with him.

Dear Americans,

Please ask yourselves "Why is Hillary Clinton stepping down as Secretary of State?"

Answer;

Mrs Clinton is a smart rat and smart rats always jump ship before they sink.

The Obama administration will be exposed as corrupt and vile. It will take time but the truth always comes to light. See the Bush administration for a recent example. No one dared speak out about George W then BING the light went off and the roaches were exposed for their disgusting selves.

Hillary Clinton is stepping down in time to save her career and a shot at 2016.

They didn't even make a connection between Bush and The Carlysle Group or Bush and Black Water yet these news media continue to talk about what does not matter to most Americans but what matters to McCain and his buddies.

Here is a Story....

AMERICA HAS TURNED INTO A POLICE STATE
attacking innocent civilians who can not fend for themselves....

Will this cause an uprising on many of the local levels????

We need a new world army composed of citizens for fairness all around the world.
It's purpose is to swoop in and prevent governments from taking advantage of innocent civilians being incarcerated, killed, or discriminated against by rogue governments or leaders who abuse their powers.

Will get back with you on the creation of this new power...

There is only 1 person with a motive to do this, and that is OBAMA! Too afraid to be honest with the American people, that it might cost him his re-election, spun this yarn purely for political purposes. Beyond despicable! In the days following the attack, all the administration would have had to say is "we're looking into what happened and will do our best to make sure it doesn't happen again". Instead they lie right to our faces, making up a fable in order to provide short term political cover. Obama is a what I thought he was from day 1, a wimp and a liar. In the beginning, there were the three stooges: McCain, Graham and Palin. Lieberman was a part of "that" team to cast a shadow on President Obama and Foreign Affairs. Now, Lieberman is just about out-the-door (and who doesn't see anything wrong in Rice's statement); Palin was swiftly kicked to the curb, and has been replaced with another "sterling" individual, Kelly Ayotte. Who, by the way, questions climate change. Really?

Is it a wonder then, that she now "questions" Rice and Benghazi?

The ONLY thing RepubliCANT's can do, is NOTHING. They aren't doing ANYTHING. They're not moving on the so-called, "Fiscal" Cliff that they cried about throughout the whole election process, their continuous efforts to equate Twin Tower's 9/11 attacks to Benghazi 9/11 attacks is absurd and pathetic and McCain's statement about liking the Patraeus scandal to that of the Iran Contra cover up, was really a sad testament to his aging, and nothing more.

The GOP, as a whole, are doomed as a Party--they only prolong the inevitable.

The only reason the GOP is against Dr Rice is that they want Sen Kerry to be selected, then they have the opportunity to get Scott Brown appointed to fill Kerry's seat and increase their seats in the Senate.

The GOP doesn't give a crap about Benghazi, only how they can use it to their advantage.

Obama is loyal to his Cabinet i.e. Susan Rice, even though he sent her out to lie about Benghazi Gate---

If she had morals, she would not have immediately gone out 5 times on the Sunday Talk Shows to outright Lie to the American Public---She is Obama's Scapegoat. The Information was immediately known by our President.

If she had Morals, and Values, she would not accept becoming the next Secretary of State---but then again Denial serves the mind well from facing the Truth. "Power Hungry". It is an aphrodisiac.

Certainly President Obama can come up with someone else who is capable. This is a REWARD for doing a good snow job on the American Public, who are too smart to believe the crazy stories surrounding the massacre; no security to protect them in Libya, and other ME/N. African Countries. All of them are exposed to outright Terrorism from Al-Qaeda, HAMAS, Hezbollah, splinter groups, staged by the Leader of Iran, including Syria. They all must be scared as H---------------------doing their jobs there in Barbaric Countries. No Protection from our Intel, or Government---Petraeus, sleeping on the job!.

eric-919186 When Condi Rice was on national TV talking about WMD and Iraq was THAT a lie?

Let me see, Sadam used WMD in the Iran-Iraq War and then later used them on his people. Considering the man would not let inspectors into the country to inspect all of his facilities, then no, she didn't lie. If she lied then did these Congress democrat leaders also lie???

To President Clinton: “[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq’s refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs.” — From a letter signed by Joe Lieberman, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara A. Milulski, Tom Daschle, & John Kerry among others on October 9, 1998

On the floor of Congress: “Iraq made commitments after the Gulf War to completely dismantle all weapons of mass destruction, and unfortunately, Iraq has not lived up to its agreement.” — Barbara Boxer, November 8, 2002

Did Britain, France, Germany also lie when their leaders & intelligence stated he had WMD?

Rice issue is not even in the same ballpark as Sadam.

Susan Rice's comments on Benghazi Should have nothing, no bearing whatsoever, relative to Her qualifications as "Secretary of State".

__________________________________________________________________

I beg to differ, it has everything to do with her qualifications ,,,,,

,,,,,, this woman, Rice, threw away her credibility when she pandered to the ignorant handling of lack security at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

She was naive enough to believe the masses would swallow her shallow story that the WELL PLANNED ATTACK ON THE U.S. Embassy in Benghazi "was a spontaneous result of the YouTube anti muslim videos. . . . ( Stupid of her, and she pushed this lie over & over.)

How could any intelligent person trust her with the post of Secretary Of State knowing what a shallow political mind set she operates from ?????

She is either a liar, very naive, or misinformed and none of those is acceptable. It makes NO difference she is a woman nor black. It is a matter of confidence and qualification.

Now she is rightfully finding she has no credibility, and will not be awarded the nomination.

It is her own damn fault and SHE DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE !

She shouldn't have said anything, especially where CIA and Delta Force are concerned. This is something I'm sure she's dealing with and answering to those "in the know."

This is more proof that Republicans are incompetent. All they care about is dodging their taxes.

If the president is responsible for the acts of terrorists, does that mean that the Republicans are responsible for the original 9/11 attack? Condoleza Rice, who went to the media to decry Iraq and spread lies about who attacked us at that time, certainally knew that nineteen of the twenty hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. Yet, she let Iraq take the blame to further the political ambitions of the Republican administration. Was that not more of a lie than this?

I thought that diplomacy was about keeping secrets, not going to the media and giving our enemies important intelligence information! This is more proof that no one in the Republican party cares what the role of diplomacy is.

This is more proof that Republicans can not govern.

I think President Obama has been a terrible president in every possible way, but he shouldn't be impeached. Voters knew the kind of person, the kind of politician, the kind of leader, he was and is, and not only did they elect him they elected him again. We deserve the government we vote for, and we richly deserve our present tribulations.

I also can't say that Ms. Rice lied. She may have, but I need more information to know that for sure. What she definately did was front lies for this administration. So either she's a dupe, or she lied for some kind of political profit. Either way she lacks the character one should have to be SOS. Most liberals posting above clearly do not understand the most common meaning of the word "lie". Simply put, it is telling something you know to be untrue at the time you tell it. There are other things that could be lies, but this is the definition that applies in this case.

What Ms. Rice said was clearly a lie. At the time she went on those five shows the White House knew the intel community had already declared it a terrorist act, had already completely discounted the "spontaneous mob" theory, and had already linked the attack to AQ affiliated groups. Further, all the cables sent to DC identifying the threat in Benghazi, along the requests for more security and the warning the Consulate could not withstand an organized attack, had already been re-read. And anyone with an IQ above room temperature had to know 9/11 was a day to be particularly aware and cautious in areas where Islamists could do damage.

So the questions about what Ms. Rice did are simple. Did she know that the classified briefs were at complete variance to the talking points she was given? She did, after all, have the ability to demand to see the underlying intelligence assessments. Who altered the intel communities' talking points which identified the attacks as terrorism? Why were those talking points altered? Why was Ms. Rice, of all people in any event, selected to go on those five shows compared to, say, Clapper, Petraeus, Clinton, or anyone else with some connection to the events? Remember, even Mr. Obama claims that Ms. Rice had absolutely nothing to do with any actions, before, during, or after, with Benghazi. So why pick her to explain to America what took place?

There are far more important questions too about what took place before, during, and after the attacks, in the context of what Mr. Obama, Ms. Clinton, Mr. Clapper, and others in the administration knew and did. At a minimum it seems clear that pleas for more security were rejected, that help during the attacks was rejected, and that an explanation of what took place that night in Benghazi was purposely distorted so that Americans would make false conclusions.

Personally, I am second most offended--after the apparent abandonment of those people in Benghazi, that the Obama administration believed it could spin such a pathetic story so well that most people would buy it. Trouble is, most voters, apparently, did.

Please ask yourselves "Why is Hillary Clinton stepping down as Secretary of State?"

Answer;

Mrs Clinton is a smart rat and smart rats always jump ship before they sink.

Really? She's leaving because "Benghazi-gate" is going to show that the "Obama administration will be exposed as corrupt and vile"? Because she "is a smart rat and smart rats always jump ship before they sink"? If so, then explain this:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505267_162-57367257/hillary-clinton-puts-a-foot-out-the-door/

This article was dated last January! She was preparing to leave ten months ago!

Saying she's leaving because of this just proves -- once again -- that right wingers will politicize anything to try and get their way. It also shows that while the right wing thinks Americans are dumb, the only dumb ones are their fellow right wingers...since they are the only ones buying this sort of tripe!

Will Obama order for the slain Woods a dishonorable discharge and revocation of his pension to his family for having directly disobeyed the president's order to stand down at Benghazi?

Know much about the military Scott? What the "former" SEALs did, they did as civilians, not members of the military. No one can revoke their honorable discharge after they have retired. The President doesn't have the authority to change their discharges.

Where did you come up with this weird idea?

The Obama Administration has admitted they "left" them hanging in the wind and relieved General Ham for trying to send help to Ambassador Stevens before his MURDER!

Afterwards Billary had Ambassador Rice try to Cover Up for them both by claiming the Benghazi attack was"spontaneous" in the National Media and NOT related to Al Qaeda who Obama has secretly been supporting in both Libya & Syria!

What, exactly, do you people think happens when funding is cut for a specific government program? How can these congress people simultaneously cut funding for embassy security and then whine when embassy security is insufficient to repel an attack? When funding is cut, then the necessary funding is not available when it is needed.

Don't even bother JMagnum, they are bound and determined to make Benghazi another Republican False Outrage like the "Fast and Furious" embarrassment. All it does in the end is destroy what little credibility they have left. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Yep sounds like an embarrassment to the Obama Administration to me...Well actually it sounds like another Criminal Conspiracy! But Fast & Furious-Gate just doesn't have the right ring to it like Benghazi-Gate does and there was only one American killed (Thousands of Mexicans but EVER Democrat knows....They Don't Count after the Election)!

It might even get to Eric Holder....http://www.examiner.com/article/attorney-general-holder-expected-to-resign-say-law-enforcement-officials

Trying to argue with the Fox News lemmings and right wing trolls polluting this vine is a waste of time. Instead why don’t we just state what’s true, Susan Rice did NOTHING wrong. ALL THIS FAKE OUTRAGE IS NOTHING MORE THAN A BIG PILE OF RANCID REPUBLICAN POLITICS.

It never ends with the Republicans. The only thing they care about is politics, politics and more politics. They NEVER look at what’s good for the country instead it’s whatever is good for THEM; in their sick little minds that’s ALL that matters.

Republicans were put on notice during the recent election but their still in denial and playing the same old games. There is a big difference this time around: now the American people are paying attention. If they don’t start doing what they were sent to Washington to do, in 2014 the Republican Party will be put on the road to extinction.

"The Truth, and Nothing But the Truth"! The President took an Oath in Office to tell the Truth. Great comments.

Your comments re: Fast and Furious/Brian Terry, the Mexican Border Security Person, killed (Mexico), Benghazi Gate, have all been swept under the Oval Office Carpet---(the parents are still waiting for some explanation, as the parents Chris Stevens the Consulate in Libya). How do they feel?

It is stained now, because everything that is important to Americans is not being revealed; everyone in the Admin is running away from the truth---so in turn, the followers blame the GOP for asking questions.

Asking questions where there has been a catastrophe is normal. We, the People deserve the truth.

The President and All Presidentsl are "Employees" of United States Citizens. Votes. Are we safe in the US?---No one knows anymore, because these subjects mentioned are just blamed on others, or no direct answers--Spinning around the truth.

What is the Truth---Americans are waiting. We knew the truth re: Watergate. Everything will be forgotten; even when the Terrorists strike again. Will it be an "Act of Terror" like any other crime, or will it be actual Terrorism, hopefully not on American Soil. Leadership is all that matters.

I tell the Truth, how about anyone else here? Lying is like chasing your tail; it comes back to bite.

I see plenty of vicious attacks. From both sides, just to be fair. I see liberals flailing away at this story by claiming it is no different than anything before. Which is odd, since the things they cite from "before" just happen to be things they also claim were atrocious acts by our government. This really leads me to question the ability of liberals to comprehend their own arguments.

What I don't see is anyone who defends Mr. Obama or Ms. Rice try to explain why Ms. Rice told the nation on Mr. Obama's behalf a story which was, at the time she said it, known to be untrue. The closest so far has been a feeble attempt to imply that the government, or people in it, know things we don't and so we should not question their actions. Talk about the scariest of all possible voter trends.

If an innocent explanation, simple or not, exists then we should hear it. Failure to explain what happened and why isn't evidence that nothing happened. There is significant evidence today that this administration knowingly lied about an event which, had they not lied, would appear to contradict the campaign narrative of the president.

That last sentence should look familiar to people who've read history. It is very similar to what happened in 1972.

Hi Confussed,

I think you make my first point nicely. Let me see if I can explain to you how what you wrote is so completely wrong. First, it could never be kept a secret that our consulate was being attacked, or had been attacked. Any suggestion we should keep things like that secret is a serious mistake in my opinion. It would never have the effect of encouraging more terrorist attacks, but it also violates the most basic premise of self-governance. People need information with which to make choices. Without this crucial step, our votes become, for lack of a better phrase, popularity contests.

Doing nothing, either during the attack itself or after the fact, likely leads to greater interest on the part of our enemies to attack more. It's a basic law of economics that if you want more of something you should reward it (if it's a good thing, or not punish it if it's a bad thing), and if you want less you should punish it. By doing nothing in the face of a bad thing we encourage more of the same.

We do not have a new game plan which is to deny terrorists acknowledgement. Why do I make this claim? Well, first, terrorists don't base their actions on being acknowledged, they base their actions on getting what they want. In other words, they won't do what doesn't work in favor of what does work. So if we leave Benghazi, which is what we did do in the aftermath of the attack, and this is what the terrorists wanted--and it was--then whether we notify them publicly that we know they did this thing or not changes nothing. They see us leave. They got their rewards. Second, and more simply, terrorists generate their own publicity regardless of what we do to identify them. Third, it strains credulity to think that the terrorists themselves don't think that we have no interest in identifying who they are in any event, and so pretending we don't care (which is what Bush did relative to OBL, and you leftists crucified him for it, remember?) only causes them to ratchet up their efforts.

Lastly, it isn't about secrecy in Benghazi. It's about intentionally lying to the voters in order to perpetuate a false narrative that is the issue. Had Ms. Rice simply reported on those five shows that we believe the attacks were caused by terrorists but that, for national security reasons, we are unable as of yet to identify the attackers, I doubt this story would have taken the "cover up" turn it did.

ps--calling people sheep for questioning what is just a pathetically conceived lie while at the same time you refuse to do anything but accept being lied to is a bit off, don't you think?

What the GOP senators that interviewed Rice about Benghazi don't want you to know about, or to remember:

JASON CHAFFETZ ADMITS HOUSE GOP CUT FUNDING FOR EMBASSY SECURITY

    Excerpts:

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) acknowledged on Wednesday that House Republicans had consciously voted to reduce the funds allocated to the State Department for embassy security since winning the majority in 2010.

For the past two years, House Republicans have continued to deprioritize the security forces protecting State Department personnel around the world. In fiscal year 2011, lawmakers shaved $128 million off of the administration's request for embassy security funding. House Republicans drained off even more funds in fiscal year 2012 -- cutting back on the department's request by $331 million.

Consulate personnel stationed in Benghazi had allegedly expressed concerns over their safety in the months leading up to the Sept. 11 attacks that killed four Americans, including [the late] Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The only reason the GOP is against Dr Rice is that they want Sen Kerry to be selected, then they have the opportunity to get Scott Brown appointed to fill Kerry's seat and increase their seats in the Senate.

Simple solution nominate Kerry and appoint Caroline Kennedy to Kerry's seat. Then let happless Brown try and knock off the daughter of a slain president.

      Elliot said:

Who came up with this "spontaneous protest" excuse and who put Rice out there to spread this coverup lie?

In her statement she made it clear that she was going on the 'best information available' to her 'at the time'.

News articles and reports from reporters who talked to eyewitnesses specified they saw the militants responsible gathering people to protest the film. One of the the attackers beat up a member of the Libyan security team claiming the Libyan military guy was an 'infidel protecting infidels who insulted our prophet'.

Yes, they were later proved to be members of an al-Quaeda splinter group, but there was eyewitness evidence that could lead one to make a reasonable assumption that a protest about the film was involved. And if a military operation against the splinter group was in the works, then informing that splinter group that we knew it was them could alert them to the fact that we cold retaliate and they would have evaded us. By sticking to the story that it was about the film, we would look clueless to the extremists responsible and while they were watching the TV and laughing at us, we would be sneaking up their back door.

But then the people of Benghazi took matters into their own hands and conducted their own assault on the militants, while crying for justice for 'Libya's Friend' Chris Stevens.

So no, I believe it wasn't for 'political reasons', it was to protect the integrity of a military investigation/operation. But when the people of Benghazi threw out the militants of their own accord, there was no need to hide it further and shortly after the militants had been driven out of Benghazi on Sept 22, the administration officially called it terrorist act.

I've posted the following article before, but will post it again for clarification purposes.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — It began around nightfall on Sept. 11 with around 150 bearded gunmen, some wearing the Afghan-style tunics favored by Islamic militants, sealing off the streets leading to the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. They set up roadblocks with pick-up trucks mounted with heavy machine guns, according to witnesses.

The trucks bore the logo of Ansar al-Shariah, a powerful local group of Islamist militants who worked with the municipal government to manage security in Benghazi, the main city in eastern Libya and birthplace of the uprising last year that ousted Moammar Gadhafi after a 42-year dictatorship.

There was no sign of a spontaneous protest against an American-made movie denigrating Islam's Prophet Muhammad. But a lawyer passing by the scene said he saw the militants gathering around 20 youths from nearby to chant against the film. Within an hour or so, the assault began, guns blazing as the militants blasted into the compound.

One of the consulate's private Libyan guards said masked militants grabbed him and beat him, one of them calling him "an infidel protecting infidels who insulted the prophet."

The witness accounts gathered by The Associated Press give a from-the-ground perspective for the sharply partisan debate in the U.S. over the attack that left U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead. They corroborate the conclusion largely reached by American officials that it was a planned militant assault. But they also suggest the militants may have used the film controversy as a cover for the attack.

        1) this comment was made by Susan Rice in April of 2011--MORE THAN A YEAR AND A HALF AGO.

        2) she specified what she had heard was from 'unofficial reports'.

        3) she was right--she was quoting a spokesperson for the International Criminal Court.

The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor says that there is evidence Qaddafi ordered the rape of hundreds of women to spread fear of his regime and curb dissent. And ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo also said there is evidence that Qaddafi may have distributed Viagra-type drugs to his troops "to enhance the possibility to rape."

Although Qaddafi has brutally suppressed dissent among Libyans for decades, the use of rape as a weapon appears to be a new tactic, Moreno-Ocampo told BBC News. "It was never the pattern he used to control the population. The rape is a new aspect of the repression. And that's why we had doubts at the beginning, but now we are more convinced," he said.

Let me ask you question--why fuss about it now, more than a year and a half after she made the comment? if there was any indiscretion committed, it would have been handled at the time and should be a non-issue now. Qaddafi is dead, his regime over.

Ethan Chorin's NY Times article: Ethan was in Benghazi to Meet Ambassador Stevens, you conspiracy/cover up theorists need to read.

          Thank you.

For those who can';t be bothered to go find it, here it is:

ON Wednesday morning, my colleagues and I were to meet in Benghazi with J. Christopher Stevens, the American ambassador to Libya, to discuss a plan for a new division of emergency medicine at Benghazi Medical Center, the largest and most modern hospital in eastern Libya. The meeting never took place. The night before, militants laid siege to the American Consulate in Benghazi, killing the ambassador and three other Americans. The ambassador was taken, without a pulse, to the hospital we hoped to upgrade.

The draft agreement we were working on was the kind of visionary effort to improve life in Libya that Ambassador Stevens liked — in this case, a collaboration between doctors in Boston and Benghazi, brokered by a nongovernmental organization that a Libyan-American and I had organized after the recent revolution. Our goal was a center that could also serve as a training facility for all of eastern Libya. It was the kind of public-private and Libyan-American partnership that Ambassador Stevens believed could help Libya move beyond decades of stagnation and despotism.

On Tuesday night, even as the men who would kill him were closing in, Ambassador Stevens told us by phone how happy he was that the project was nearing fruition. He told us it was important to show our government’s support for such initiatives, and we made plans to meet with the medical center’s director general, Dr. Fathi al-Jehani, at the hospital the next morning. Dr. Jehani himself had been a target of violence for his forward-thinking views.

About half an hour later, I called the ambassador’s security detail to discuss the visit, only to hear the words “we’ve got a problem here” — with an alarming expletive inserted. The line went dead. And we were left to listen helplessly as the sounds of distant violence carried across the city to our hotel room — a long rocket-propelled grenade volley, and machine-gun fire that continued for the better part of an hour.

Ambassador Stevens arrived after midnight at Benghazi Medical Center, where we were to have met. Its emergency room staff, which included Libyan expatriates who had returned from well-paid jobs abroad, worked for 45 minutes to try to resuscitate him. It was no use.

The tragedies of this situation simply compound one another. For a forthcoming book about the Libyan revolution, I have interviewed scores of current and former Western officials, many of whom were either pessimistic about or indifferent to Libya’s growing pains. In their eyes, Libya continues to be a sideshow of the broader Arab Spring.

Ambassador Stevens did not agree. I discussed Libya’s future with him last spring in a Washington cafe, as he awaited confirmation as ambassador. He had already been the deputy chief of mission in Libya, and he had been the United States envoy to Benghazi during the dangerous early days of the revolution. So he knew Libya, and he believed that it could become one of the first full success stories of the Arab Spring — that Islamic radicalism there could be nipped in the bud if Western governments acted decisively to put the country on a path to stability and social progress.

Now, his death may derail the very processes he championed.

Mr. Stevens understood that Libyans had suffered under Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, and that conflict and post-revolutionary instability were to be expected. He also understood that some, if not all, of the hatred that had pushed some of Libya’s youths to join radical factions in Afghanistan and Iraq had sprung from years of neglect and oppression. Now, he felt, new opportunities needed to be created to wean these people away from ideologies rooted in hate.

No doubt that was one reason he made a point, as ambassador, of continuing to visit Benghazi, the East’s largest city, despite the clear risks; there had been attacks on other high-level diplomats there in the previous months. It is a mystery at this point why the consulate compound was so lightly fortified, but I would not be surprised if Mr. Stevens had decided to stay overnight in Benghazi simply because his list of planned meetings with Libyans there was too long to be accomplished in one afternoon.

The morning after the attack on the consulate, my colleagues and I returned to the medical center, where we witnessed an outpouring of sadness and, as one physician put it, shame. The emergency room staff members who worked to save Mr. Stevens broke down in tears, as did the physician in charge. Some knew or had met Mr. Stevens; some had not. But all were aware that he had been a champion of Libya, and of Benghazi in particular, and that his death may have rolled back Benghazi’s stupendous revolutionary accomplishments by months — even if it does not set off a period of heightened instability in eastern Libya. Many Libyans outside the hospital also offered condolences and expressed profound regret for America’s loss.

In the West, we can now expect a strong temptation among governments and private enterprise to declare the Libyan experiment a failure, and to respond by disengaging, retreating or focusing only on the extirpation of radical elements. That would be a terrible mistake. The attack has already entered into the American presidential debate in a base fashion, with Mitt Romney’s first instinct being to criticize President Obama over the timing of his denunciation of the attack. But Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton got it right when she spoke of the Libyan people as allies in the fight against extremism.

The gravest mistake would be for the United States to write off Libya as an irredeemable terrorist haven, or for politicians in Washington to regret having intervened in support of Libya’s rebels. Libya is still far better off today than it was under Qaddafi. The grip of fear has been broken. Election posters festoon the country. Election schedules have been met. And there is a rich expression of individual opinions.

Nevertheless, the Libyan people need support to consolidate gains, and to continue a fight against largely foreign-financed radicals who wish to hijack the revolution in the name of intolerance. And the United States must help the Libyans do that. The loss of Ambassador Stevens will, I hope, goad the Libyan government into matching its discipline about election schedules with far bolder steps to crack down on extremists and disarm the country’s militias. And Libya should press the American government for even more support in that effort, even as it encourages American organizations to find common cause with their Libyan counterparts to improve the lives of Libya’s citizens.

This week the United States lost one of its most admirable public servants, and I can report that at least some Libyans are profoundly aware that the loss is theirs as well. As we arrived at the airport under armed escort, a member of the airport ground crew said: “Today I will go home, I will take off these clothes, and I will put on only black. As a Libyan, I am so sorry this has happened.”

At a minimum it seems clear that pleas for more security were rejected, that help during the attacks was rejected,

            Incorrect. See below:

About 9:40 pm (local time) large numbers of armed men shouting "Allah akbar" descended on the compound from multiple directions. The attackers lobbed grenades over the wall and entered the compound under a barrage of automatic weapons fire and RPGs, backed by truck-mounted artillery and anti-aircraft machine guns. A Diplomatic Security agent viewed on the consulate's security cameras "a large number of men, armed men, flowing into the compound." He hit the alarm and started shouting, “Attack! Attack!” over the loudspeaker.

Phone calls were made to the embassy in Tripoli, the Diplomatic Security Command Center in Washington, the Libyan February 17 Brigade, and a U.S. quick reaction force located at a second compound (the annex) a little more than a mile away. Ambassador Stevens telephoned Deputy Chief of Mission Gregory Hicks in Tripoli to tell him the consulate was under attack. Mr. Hicks did not recognize the phone number so he didn't answer it, twice. On the third attempt Mr. Hicks answered the call from Ambassador Stevens.

Diplomatic Security special agent Scott Strickland secured Ambassador Stevens and Sean Smith, an information management officer, in the main building's safe haven. Other agents retrieved their weaponry and tactical gear from another building. They tried to return to the main building but encountered armed attackers and retreated.

The attackers entered the main building and rattled the locked metal grille of the safe haven. They carried jerrycans of diesel fuel, spread the fuel over the floor and furniture, and set fires. As thick smoke filled the building, Stevens, Smith, and Strickland moved to the bathroom and lay on the floor, but they decided to leave the safe haven after being overcome by smoke. Strickland exited through the window, but Stevens and Smith did not follow him. Strickland returned back several times but couldn't find them in the smoke; he went up to the roof and radioed other agents.

Three agents returned to the main building in an armored vehicle; they searched the building and found Smith's body, but not Stevens.

A quick reaction force from the CIA annex arrived and attempted to secure the perimeter and locate the ambassador but were unable to find Stevens in the smoke-filled building. The team then decided to return to the annex with the survivors and Smith's body. While en route back to the annex, the group's armored vehicle was hit by rifle fire and hand grenades. The vehicle was able to make it to its destination with two flat tires, however.

Will Obama order for the slain Woods a dishonorable discharge and revocation of his pension to his family for having directly disobeyed the president's order to stand down at Benghazi?

Doherty and Woods were EX-Navy SEALS. They had gotten a discharge and were privately contracted with the CIA as security. They were at the CIA annex a mile away from the consulate helping military reinforcements from the embassy in Tripoli evacuate 30+ Americans when the CIA annex was attacked three hours after the consulate attack:

After the consulate attack and before the annex attack, Libyan government forces met up a group of Americans (believed to be eight reinforcements from Tripoli) that had arrived at the Benghazi airport and went with them to the CIA annex at about 4 am to assist in transporting approximately 32 Americans at the annex back to the airport for evacuation. As they were at the annex arranging for the transportation back to the airport a single shot rang out, quickly followed by RPGs and then a mortar that hit the annex roof killing Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods while operating their machine gun while Ubben suffered shrapnel injuries and several broken bones. According to Ubben's father, "The first [mortar] dropped 50 yards short and the next two were right on target."

I'm going to set a few facts straight here:

                  1) Ambassador Stevens asked for an extension on his SST from the State Department, and he asked it for the Embassy in Tripoli. Not the consulate.

                  2) The official US Embassy is in Tripoli. The consulate, where Ambassador Stevens died, is in Benghazi, about 400 miles away. It is a set of office buildings surrounded by a wall. It is not a regularly-staffed office, no people actually work out of it, it is a satellite location for the diplomatic team to conduct meetings with parties on the east half of the country.

                  3) Stevens and Smith were the only two that died at the consulate; Doherty and Woods, both former Navy SEALS privately contracted by the CIA, were killed in the attack on the CIA annex some distance away three hours later. They were killed while helping 30+ Americans at the CIA building evacuate. Doherty and Woods were never at the consulate that day and NEITHER DOHERTY OR WOODS WERE ACTIVE-DUTY, CURRENTLY SERVING MILITARY.

                  4) Stevens was NOT raped, tortured sodomized or anything of the sort.

                  5) Part of the responsibility for the incident must lie with Ambassador Stevens himself. He traveled to the consulate that day from the (fortified and guarded) Embassy in Tripoli for some local meetings that took longer than he expected; he decided not to travel back to the embassy, but to stay overnight at the consulate and resume meetings the next day. There were only about seven people in the consulate that night when Stevens saw his last visitor (a Turkish diplomat) out of the building at about 8:30 local time. Knowing the area was full of unrest, and protests had been going on about the anti-Muslim video throughout the day (a Libyan witness interviewed about the incident said he saw a few members of the militia responsible gathering ordinary people outside the consulate to protest the video) in hindsight the decision to overnight in a building with inadequate protection was inappropriate.

                  6) There were roughly about 125-150 attackers.

                  7) The Libyans were extremely sorry and there was an outpouring of support. There were demonstrations in Benghazi and Tripoli on September 12, condemning the violence and holding signs such as "Chris Stevens was a friend to all Libyans," "Benghazi is against terrorism," and other signs apologizing to Americans for the actions in their name and in the name of Muslims. The NY Times noted that young Libyans had also flooded Twitter with pro-American messages after the attacks. It was noted that Libyans are typically more positively inclined towards the United States than their neighbors. A 2012 Gallup poll noted that "A majority of Libyans (54%) surveyed in March and April 2012 approve of the leadership of the U.S. -- among the highest approval Gallup has ever recorded in the... region, outside of Israel." Another poll in Eastern Libya, taken in 2011, reported that the population was at the same time both deeply religious conservative Muslims and very pro-American, with 90% of respondents reporting favorable views of the United States.

                  8) A week after the attack on the consulate the ordinary people of Benghazi rose up against the militants responsible, storming their compound and driving them out while shouting slogans like 'Justice for Chris' and 'Libya Lost a Friend' as they did so. Two days later the Libyan government declared these unauthorized militias illegal and decreed they disband. The decree also made public carrying of weapons illegal; and the next day hundreds of Libyans handed over their weapons. The government also started raiding bases and compounds held by these rogue militia, to the general approbation of the people.

                  9) On September 12, during press conference in the Rose Garden called in response to the attack, President Obama said:

"...no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done."

Whether he meant that to mean he did view the incident as a terrorist act or not is up to personal interpretation.

                  10) Eyewitnesses interviewed after the attack told reporters that they had seen a few of the militants out on the street trying to start a protest about the video about an hour prior to the attack. Also, one of the Libyan guards for the consulate that night reported that he was beaten by the militants who accused him of being an 'infidel protecting infidels who insulted our prophet'.

                  11) Susan Rice's comments to the UN about Qadaffi's passing out Viagra to his troops to encourage them to rape Libyan civilian women were not taken from a tabloid. A certain poster commented on Susan Rice's comments to the UN about Qadaffi having passed out Viagra to the tropps, claiming she got it from a tabloid and embarassed the nation. This is untrue--International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said they had evidence that Qadaffi may have done so. AND THIS COMMENT WAS MADE IN APRIL OF 2011, more than a year and a half ago. It is a non-issue.

The dynamic switcheroo. We always come up with more rationale for our decisions 'after the fact'. Especially when the original premise becomes uncomfortable after a brief perusal of history. I'm sure Colin Powell knows what I'm talking about if the three neanderthals had 'forgotten about that'. 'Well. 'they' got to complain, now it's our turn'. Not ezzackly concerned about the best interests of the country.

Susan Rice IS unqualified for this job. She was fully aware of what she did on the Benghazi debacle and the fact that it was politically motivated to keep Al Qaeda out of the killing of 4 Americans.

We don't need ANOTHER lying and distrustful person in one of the highest offices in the land.

And BTW, has anyone other than me noticed that every time Susan Rice is around, Obama always embraces her or what seems to be a somewhat suspicious "pat on the back."

This, I think, is why he prefers Rice over Kerry and the qualifications of Rice is no match for the experienced John Kerry.

It never ends with the Republicans. The only thing they care about is politics, politics and more politics

I suspect two things here. 1. The Republicans want to smear Susan Rice so she won't get the Secretary of State job so Obama has to give it to John Kerry, and the Republicans can run Scott Brown for his seat. 2. The Republicans want to draw attention away from the fact that they are the ones who denied more funding for extra security for our embassies. These are obvious.

This is nothing but republican bull@!$%#, trying to make Benghazi into something that it is not. They aren't even interested in the real issue, which is how to make sure it doesn't happen again. Republicans are compromising national security by beating this dead horse. The intelligence community is who put those talking points out there, and there was likely CIA activity going on. Also republicans are the ones who voted to cut security funding for our foreign embassies and consulates. The REAL reason republicans are doing this is because they want John Kerry, not Rice, as Sec of State so Scott Brown can get Kerry's senate seat. That is it and I hope it doesn't work for them. Nothing but a manufactured fake 'scandal' complete with false outrage.

Former republican senator Brown lost his seat in the last election, republicans don't want President Obama to give Hiliary Clinton's job to Rice, they want him to give it to John Kerry. If President Obama give the job to Kerry then republicans and Brown can make a move to replace Kerry, thus returning Brown to a seat in congress. Susan Rice has no seat that a republican can take if she is promoted, so they don't want her promoted, they want Kerry and his seat.

Brown is one of the republican party's young hotshots they don't want to lose even tho the voters in his state voted him out, they're trying very hard to get him back in.

It's just as I thought, republicans saying Susan Rice is incompetent, is just another republican trick.

I forgot to mention, John Kerry is a Democrat, so they're going after a democrats seat.

                                    4) Stevens was NOT raped, tortured sodomized or anything of the sort.

So I would love to hear your explanation of http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2012/09/islamists-drag-dead-body-of-us-ambassador-in-the-streets/

Might I also add say that Claim is "Undetermined" yet you claim it is UNTRUE.....http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/stevens.asp

A group of locals found Stevens in a small locked room, pulled him out of the window, found he was still alive and rushed him through the streets to the nearest hospital, where doctors worked for 45 minutes to save the ambassador, then, failing that, placed his body on an airlift and sent him on to Tripoli, to the US Embassy there. The streets were clogged and blocked, there was fire everywhere, and the people of Benghazi did what they could to save his life.

                                    http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/17/us-ambassador-video-idUSBRE88G19Y20120917

Think about it, if there were signs of violence on the body, the doctors at the hospital would have noticed. The officials who accepted the body for transport back to the US would have noticed. The receiving officials who accepted his body here in the US from the transport would have noticed. The morticican who prepared his body for the funeral would have noticed. Great Goddess, if this were true his FAMILY would be the ones screaming it from the housetops, and Mitt Romney's campaign would have used it as fuel for his campaign. As we have heard NOTHING from any of those sources, particularly his family, then I must conclude the rumors are untrue.

                                    11) Susan Rice's comments to the UN about Qadaffi's passing out Viagra to his troops to encourage them to rape Libyan civilian women were not taken from a tabloid.....AND THIS COMMENT WAS MADE IN APRIL OF 2011, more than a year and a half ago. It is a non-issue.

And because this Disgusting "Lack Of Judgement" and Rumor Mongering was made a year and a half ago and lead to an Over throw Qaddaffi by Al Qaeda in Libya....Well gee that's OK it's a non issue today

How is it 'lack of judgement' and 'rumor mongering' to repeat something that an ICCC prosecutor has cited as their reason for wanting Qaddaffi? In case you've forgotten, Qaddaffi was also allegedly behind the Lockerbie, Scotland plane crash/bomb back in the 80's and many human rights violations in the time since.

We put a man in the oval office that had neither the qualifications, the legislative record, or executive experience to be there. In fact the nation was foolish enough to seat him twice. So why should it come as any surprise that he would nominate someone for a role as important as Secretary of State who is equally unqualified?

                                      9) On September 12, during press conference in the Rose Garden called in response to the attack, President Obama said:

"...no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done."

Whether he meant that to mean he did view the incident as a terrorist act or not is up to personal interpretation.

Amanda, it is very obvious Obama was not referring to the Benghazi attack as an act of terror, but was making a blanket statement about terrorist acts that may occur in the future as to make himself appear presidential. Need proof, simply look at his statements that followed for the better part of 2 weeks, the T word was never used in conjunction with Benghazi. Countless references to the "Video" are made though, even though we know Obama knew exactly what the nature of the attack was, if not withing hours, certainly within a day or two. The intel community knew it, how could the president not know it, especially on a matter of this magnitude. Furthermore if Obama truly didn't know, if no one in his cabinet thought it important enough to give Obama the straight story, then the incompetence of this whole admin is off the charts inept to an alarming degree. Take your pick, a terrible liar, or a hopelessly incompetent leader and administration. What a choice!

When someone dies under this administration it is ok. Because someone has died in the past under someone else's administration, that could have been covered up, it is ok to let them die today and please do not dare question what we could have done, because Bush was in office ever, all actions by the other party are excused by God himself. You are not allowed to question this administration, or else, you are al'quida himself. Period. End of Story.

APPERENTLY BECAUSE BUSH SERVED AS OUR PRESIDENT, ALL ACTIONS ARE EXCUSED IN THE NAME OF BUSH DID IT. this will forever be used by evildoers to make sure no one looks at them when they murder.

The only motive the right has is to find out why Obama lied to us, to find out why or how the system failed and make sure it doesn't happen again, and to expose this pathetic POS in the white house for who he really is.

And we see the problem inherent in the current system. Even if you think you are voting for a moderate Republican when the rubber hits the road and the word comes down from on high, they have to toe the line or leave. Several moderates just packed up and left. Collins obviously has decided to toe the party line and stay.

This is why I WILL NOT vote for Republican, no matter how moderate or how qualified they may be. It's not them, it's the party and I cannot take that risk.

Shame on you Republicans. Susan Rice is a career diplomat and highly qualified for her position. Shame on you for wrongfully dragging her through the mud over a non-issue. Don't we have more important issues to be dealing with?

McCain's trying to keep his name out there, and since he isn't in line to lead any committees, he's trying to create one on Benghazi for himself. Graham's up for re-election, and is trying to impress his constituency. That's their only interest in this.

                                                    elliot,

Same question for you; Is Romney the most qualified person the GOP could find for THAT job???

Rice is likely going to be the new Secretary of State. You Teabaggers need to get used to letting QUALIFIED people pull our country out of the mess created by YOUR lame party's selfish acts....

The opposition to Rice is nothing more than a thinly disguised attempt to get Senator John Kerry nominated as Secretary of State, thus vacating his Senate seat. They hope to fill that Senate seat with Republican, Scott Brown, who was defeated in this years election by a Democrat, Elizabeth Warren....

Keep up the good work, McCain and company! Keep up the obstruction, John Boehner! Keep ignoring the truth about why your out-dated politics LOST in a LANDSLIDE. Keep ignoring the fact that Democrats got more votes for the House of Representative seats this election. It will be a pleasure to see the rest of your greedy majority gone in 2 years, THEN we can see some progress....

Very simple solution..... vote them out of office. McCain, Graham, Collins, Ayote, McConnell. Congress has a bigger issue to deal with than this Benghazi attacks like the fiscal cliff mess they made. No intent to disrespect the deaths of Americans and Egyptians on Benghazi.

Maybe this is their way of stalling discussions of the fiscal cliff, which is very bad tactics.

Susan Rice is a certified liar. Saying Al Queda was "decimated" in numerous interviews, that is a LIE. They are stronger than ever in several middle eastern countries. Benghazi was just another lie, she knew damn well that "video" was not the reason, and by saying so she is culpable, period. Maybe her intelligence was wrong that was given to her, but she damn sure knew it wasn't that "video". We can do a lot better than Ms. Rice.

I think we need to keep in mind - an international poll regarding the respect held towards nations found the USA at near the bottom by the end of the Bush administration (see pew research polling - the USA's favorable rating fell from around 80% to around 40% among our allies).

Susan Rice has been the face of America at the UN for the last 4 years, as America's favorability rating has been restored to pre-Bush levels. The rest of the world loves Susan Rice. That is the most important factor, since the Secretary of State is more a facilitator than a guider.

The people who oppose Rice do so only for political gain, not out of any honest concern for America's position in the world. And that is despicable. Especially since the number one arguement against her, that she "lied", is itself untrue.

Condoleeza Rice testified before the senate and said that "Al Queda is 75% destroyed." Senator Feinstein asked "75% of what? Of 100? Of 10,000?" Rice said she didn't know. She was just repeating what she had been told. No problem for Republicans at the time.

They're never going to learn. We are recovering in SPITE of the Greed Only Party, not because of them. If they had their way, they'd create a Plutocracy, with only the wealthiest citizens having any benefits.

All these people who think they're supporting the RepubliCONs because of their "conservative" policies, like "family values", "ethics", "fiscal responsibility" are completely clueless, fooled by the wealthy oligarchs who desperately want to rule this country and to HELL with anyone who opposes them.

This is obstructionism, plain and simple, and all being done for one reason, and one reason only. Randy nailed it right on the head: They want to get Senator John Kerry nominated as Secretary of State, thus vacating his Senate seat. They hope to fill that Senate seat with Republican.

                                                    They're maneuvering. They're manipulating. They're conniving.

And these are the people some of you want in charge?

For those of you who are drinking the Fox kool-aid, you don't know a damn thing about "socialism". You're just regurgitating a label that you were brainwashed into thinking was bad. Thomas Jefferson, James Adams, James Madison and Samuel Adams were ALL socialists by today's standards.

Your name-calling of the President of the United States is treason, and you should have your citizenship revoked and be deported.

If Natalie Mains could be threatened with having her citizenship revoked for saying she was embarrassed that Dubya was from the same state as she, then you can get the same treatment for your childish and anti-American diatribes.

How any of you can claim to love America, when you clearly hate the average American is a mystery. If you don't like this country, then GET OUT.

The news that Abu Yahya al-Libi, the No.2 leader of al Qaeda, is now confirmed to have been killed in a CIA drone strike in Pakistan's tribal region along the border with Afghanistan further underlines that the terrorist group that launched the 9/11 attacks is now more or less out of business.

Under President Barack Obama, CIA drone strikes have killed 15 of the most important players in al Qaeda, according to a count maintained by the New America Foundation (a nonpartisan think tank where I am a director).

As a result, according to senior U.S. counterterrorism officials, there now remains only one leader of any consequence in al Qaeda and that is Ayman al-Zawahiri, the tetchy Egyptian surgeon who became the head of the group following the death of its founder, Osama bin Laden, in a U.S. Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan in May 2011.

Let us not forget that the Republican controlled House decimated the budgets for the diplomatic outposts that they are complaining were not guarded adequately.

So, this outraged outcry from the right is purely political. It is a strategy that will not work. Obama will not appoint a sitting Democratic Senator, and risk losing the seat.

Once Harry Reid has modified the filibuster rule, the Republicans will have to put up or shut up.

This is not for JCB-lotsanumbers. This is for those who may actually believe she knows what she is talking about.

Yesterday, noncoms was good enough to put up the transcript of Ambassador Rice's statement. What Ambassador Rice presented is fact and that was confirmed by the intelligence agencies who provided her with that information. JCB would have you believe otherwise. You see, JCB knows that the intelligence agencies are also lying, right along with Ambassador Rice.

JCB also foolishly writes that Ambassador Rice lied about al Qaeda being decimated. Folks, a pack of terrorists operating without a leader, operating without direction is decimated. Want more? The number one guy is dead. The number two guy is dead. Number three? Well, as fast as they step into the number three position they get dead.

When JCB tells us she knows what Susan Rice knew, it should give you pause, because clearly she had to be out of her mind to be in Ambassador Rice's.

I know you folks like facts, sure you do. Here's a CNN fact check on Al Qaeda's so called decimation, being spilled by Ms. Rice recently, read it and weep fools.

"Al Qaeda's core leadership has been seriously weakened, but the affiliates remain active, particularly in Yemen and North Africa, where the threat to Western interests and plotting against the homeland remain strong. Romney's claim that al Qaeda is in 10 to 12 countries is in the ballpark, and the administration would seem to agree that poses an enormous threat"

How is the death of a US Ambassidor and three other loyal Americans and the subsequent cover-up a "Non-issue"? Particularly when one is being considered for such an important position as SOS? You are obviously so brain washed with the current Progressive Liberals, like so many others, that the deaths mean absolutely nothing to you. How truly sad our country has become.

Wow, the Republicans in Congress seem somehow to have missed the message sent to them by the American people in the November election. The majority has reconfirmed their support of President Obama for another four years.

The Constitutional process is that the President nominates, and the Senate provides advice and consent; not placing a nomination "on hold" for the purpose of preventing an up or down vote on the nominee in the US Senate!

A US Senator who would place a "hold" on a Presidential nominee -- rather than following the Constitutional process of offering his/her advice and then voting yea or nay -- does not deserve to sit in the US Senate! Rather, that US Senator belongs in a 'time-out facing the corner", ...under parental supervision.

It's as simple as that, members of Congress. By all means fight the good fight, and make your positions known. That is why you were sent to Congress. But then you need to vote. If you instead decide to fight dirty and just stop, block the entire process, and damage the interests of the country just to get your own way ( or to avoid losing face by backing down from your ill-advised earlier statements and behaviors ) rather than recognizing "you are just 1 vote of 100 votes" ... then you are no different from the a petulant child on the playground who rather than play the game as one member of a team ...would rather just take the ball and go home!

You folks are making complete fools of yourselves; even the registered Republicans among my family members and friends say so. But more important than your personal image in the eyes of Americans ... you are embarrassing our country. You need to stop doing that, and GROW UP!

There is important work to do -- work which you are supposed to do in exchange for your salaries and benefits. Get to it. It's not "all about you." You are elected to be "tools of Democracy"; ... but don't confuse that with acting "acting like tools!"

Well it's funny that you should say that because I found that article on cnn.com. You can easily search the title which I included in my last post which is more than you've done. Is that just BS or what? I'm sure Al Qaeda is still active and all of it's living actors but when leaders of groups like this go down they become desperate to hold onto their title and their purpose but it's disorganized as long as we keep killing their leaders. They will always find a new leader (duh) but an organization needs a leader to be affective.

I can't believe some of the comments I have seen here. It's politics, folks! Rice stuck to the party line of no such thing as al-Queda. She is not independant enough for the position. Obviously it got to Hillary Clinton, so she's out of there. Has nobody noticed how closed mouth and uncomfortable Clinton has been? I think everyone was told what to say, and they didn't like it.

Benghazi was a complete breakdown in common sense, from leaving our consulate hanging in the wind to censoring the information to America, and we might never know who pulled the al-Queda references from the intel. Same goes for Fast and Furious.

It makes me sick that everytime ANYONE asks questions they are accused of being racist or anti-female. There is always something run up the flag pole to distract the public from the mistakes and worse. Quit clouding the issues and ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

Seems it was a case of tell something quick to get something out there till they could ensure that release of other Intel would not cause immediate copycat attacks in other portions of the world. She was not in a position to decide what to release but was to release what she was told to release, and many of those making the decision on what to release were GOPers......

Sorry but Ms. Rice has no credibility. As a 28 year old aid in Bill Clinton’s National Security Council she couldn’t bring herself to acknowledge the term “genocide” to describe events occurring in Rwanda, lest it make Clinton look bad before upcoming midterm elections. Fast forward to September 16, 2012, FIVE days after our ambassador was murdered. She just couldn’t bring herself to acknowledge to us or the world that it was a terrorist attack when everyone with an IQ over 50 new it was. I’m sure the impending presidential election was just a coincidence.

Nothing written by you has any logic or meaning---but what is written, is mean spirited---

Try again; I'd like to really understand what is written, to be conveyed to all commenters in a sensible manner.

                                                        (R) Senetor Collins campaigned for Scott Brown the last week before the election.

                                                        Go figure.

Also McCain & Gram are on video in 2001 & 2002 talking about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

While praising Condellesa Rice for promoting the lie of WMD's and arguing why she should be Secretary of State. Amazingly Hypocritical human beings.

Attacking her is the most dumbest thing anyone could do and you can't claim you are serious about the incident because she is not the one who sets the policy or in charge of the CIA's information.

Remember back when Bush was president and the Marines barracks was attacked, I forgot how many soldiers were killed but it was a lot more than 4, not one democrat pointed a finger at republicans and accused them of treason for letting our brave soldiers get killed, democrats worked with republicans to bring the people responsible to justice.

Nobody accused the UN ambassordor of lying even through the first report was not completely accurate. The same thing happened with Susan Rice, the only difference is, Bush was president so the lives of a few hundred marines is not as important as the 4 people that were killed on President Obama's watch.

This republican witch-hunt is not about the lives lost, it is only about if the republicans can get President Obama to name Kerry as Secretary of State so they can grab his seat.

Everything else republicans are doing is just window dressing.

Obama nominating Rice just gives the GOP more rope to hang themselves with. They have no credible reason for disapproving of her, and Obama knows it. He'll nominate her, the GOP will make fools out of themselves trying to block her appointment, and she'll be the next SOS anyway.

Rice meets with these 3 quacks for an hour without any requirement that they do so, and these clods leave, saying the meeting left them with more questions or more disturbed than they were before. This is a tempest in a teapot if ever there was one. Maddow's probably right--mendacious Republicans seeking to force Obama to appoint Kerry as secretary of state so Scott Brown can run for the Senate seat vacated by Kerry.

And Boehner's returning to what he's been for almost 4 years--chief of the relentless warriors for the wealthy--after suggesting he might be more flexible.

Republicans all standing in the way of progress because they care less about America's welfare than their own defeated propaganda.

And what did they do? Filibuster numerous jobs bills, veterans bills, healthcare for 9/11 responders, etc etc etc.

But they did put up some stupid abortion bills that have absolutely nothing to do with anyone's jobs but their own....

All those years of republican rule, the rich were given everything they asked for, instead of creating millions of jobs, they gave us the worst recession this country has ever seen, you and people like you know what they did yet you argue like hell to give them another chance to do it again.

All of the money and food stamps given to the poor is just a drop in the bucket compared to the billions given by republicans to the already rich.

Republicans think Susan Rice is not independent enough of the White House. What a joke. Condi Rice LIED to the Americans in many ways: about what she knew (and didn't) before the Sept. 2001 strikes on New York and Washington, and then again about so-called WMD in Iraq, claiming there would be a mushroom cloud if we did not act. And she was a compelete lap dog as NSC adviser and Secretary of State for George W. Bush.

Yet no Republican has ever said she should be held accountable for the two wars and thousands of death of American soldiers. Hypocritical is the nicest adjective I would apply to those Republicans now attacking Ms Rice. Let's face it, the Republicans have yet to recognize they have been rejected by the American people of on the domestic and foreign affairs front, and the likes of McCain and Graham have seen better days.

But you republicans don't want to blame the CIA because your hero David Petreaus was the director when the attack in Benghazi happened. You want to blame Susan Rice because you think she is an easy target.

Allowing the same people who got away with murder to charge others with it would be.

And nice of you to admit the Republicans were completely guilty of genocidal mass killing. It's about time someone did.

The question is, where was the republican outrage then? The intelligence was was cherry-picked to go to war. Their pretend outrage at this but not that shows that for them, this is all about scoring political points and embarrasing the administration.

The "outrage" then was placed solely on the shoulders of those that flew OUR planes into buildings and fields, killing innocent Americans. Do not even try to show contempt now for those actions by pretending you didn't want the same justice passed. No one cared about WMD at the time. Americans wanted justice. BOTH republicans AND democrats. Otherwise, WE as a country would not have gone into a war voted on by BOTH parties in Washington. That is not a question to be answered solely by republicans, so don't sit there and type like all democrats were against the advance of war in 2001.

                                                              1. Why are you so hung up on Rice, oh maybe because of she extremely intelligent, she probably has more intelligence than all 3 of you put together.

                                                              2. Is it maybe because McCain will not have another committee to be on that is news worthy?

                                                              4. Graham & Ayotte are you just another puppet for the Teaparty agenda?

                                                              5. McCain, Graham & Ayotte instead of going after Rice why don't you focus your time on tax cuts for the middle class, and the deficit, sounds like to me this is a whole lot more important, you need to get your priorities straight.

I don't understand what citing other horrible events has to do with this horrible event. Repeating mistakes is the ultimate mistake. I don't think Fox news is any more biased than MSNBC. They are both 100% biased. Claiming that someone else made mistakes does not in any way make what happened ok. Strange way to rationalize your sheepish trust in the current powers that be. "I support this criminal bcs others before him were criminal", is an absurd argument

I don't think so but it's not a plus. Judge her on her work. Has she done outstanding work in protecting US interests? I don't know because no one is talking about real accomplishments. The fact that she is a young black woman should not give her a free pass.

And then they LIED about what was going on to the American people for nearly 2 weeks about the truth of the situation. Yep they all knew damn good and well what the truth of the matter was, cause they watched it via live feed from more than one drone above the target area....yet for some reason...(POLITICAL) they proceeded to LIE about what they witnessed! LBJ started the current trend of deficit spending and the Great Lord Ronny made it popular. John, the answer is, it was an issue then too, but not as much due to the health of the economy and the ratio of GDP to debt. 4years later the dept is nearly 50% higher and GDP is lower, thats what makes it a bonified crisis. Reagan increased tax revenue, this is fact. Democrats opened the checkbook and spent it at a faster rate than the increasing revenue coming in, this is a fact. With regard to Obama, no one was expecting him to erase 50 years of deficit spending in his 1st term, but he's doubled down on more of it, oblivious to the danger.

There's a disturbing trend going on in this country and I certainly do not expect it to change, at least for the next 4 years. During this last election, I made an interesting discovery. When the story broke about the Benghazi cover up, I called my sister in Iowa. We do not share political beliefs, but agree to disagree. While I had just watched live coverage of the initial Benghazi hearings that were taking place in DC, my sister had absolutely no idea what I was talking about! (she is BTW, an intelligent, college educated woman) Out of curiosity, I asked her to do some channel searching to see if the story was on her news anywhere. It was not. Over the next few days, I did a lot of channel surfing myself and discovered that the stories I was watching on Fox News, were not even on the radar on any other news station. Nor were they on my MSN home page! (Go figure!) OK, so you tell me - what's wrong with this picture. The bleeding heart leftist liberals continually WHINE WHINE WHINE about Fox News, however, they never seem to quite make it to Fox to check out if they are possibly missing important details. I, on the other hand, regularly watch other news stations for a more BALANCED assessment of what's going on in the world. For those who paint "Fox News" as their stat unreliable source for news, I've come to one conclusion - liberalism is a form of mental illness! Clearly, if you have any brain capable of logical thinking, you would understand by now, news reporting has become complete, editorialized BS used for the purpose of promoting an agenda. (Think Hitler and his takeover of the media) Been on this planet a few years and can't remember a time when I felt such overwhelming disgust regarding what is happening in this country. Lying and corruption has become so commonplace that it's considered the norm. The viciousness of the far left is palpable in every form of media as they continue to "sell" their agenda. Accountability isn't even in their dictionary! If this continues, this nation is doomed, but many of us already know that.

Where was the Audio coming from....some spook with a listening device across the street? I highly doubt that any credible audio was obtained if any from the actual attacks....other that the phone calls and secure comms that were being sent from the embassy begging for some help and a QRF to respond. However, those drones flying "IN REAL TIME" over the target area... as the attack was taking place, Now those things are equiped with these things called High Def Cameras...that could count the hairs on your a$$ from an undisclosed altitude. Oh and yes, they are equipped with a live feed from those cameras. And it was piped out to more high level viewers than you or I will ever know about! So keep believing that crap you talk.... the rest of us, including myself that have witnessed "live feeds" from drones in real time, we know what the scoop is! They watched it.... they did nothing.... and they LIED! If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck.... just do us a favor and call it a duck!

Does anybody think this situation was handled correctly by Rice or Obama? and, Claiming that someone else made mistakes does not in any way make what happened ok. Strange way to rationalize your sheepish trust in the current powers that be. "I support this criminal bcs others before him were criminal", is an absurd argument

Well said. Unfortunately your logic is falling on many a Liberal deaf (and dumb) ear. They are only interested in deflecting, dodging and worshipping the messiah.

It might behoove you to pry yourself away from Faux News spews long enough to register for night classes at your local junior college. Since President Obama will be in office for another 4 yrs and a month, you can probably qualify for low-interest student loans. Meanwhile would you like a box of tissues and/or some cheese with that whine?

                                                              BS!!!!!

The campaign "talking points" were that Al Qaeda was on the way down. By allowing the story to come out that an Al Qaeda affiliate was responsible for planning and carrying out this attack, would refute the talking points, thereby deflating his "credentials and success" in foreign policy.

Therefore, coverup and stall until after the election. Pretty simple really.

As to Rice becoming S o S, Obama screwed up. He used Rice to further his lie, was caught, so now Rice has to pay. She took one for the team going on the tv shows to lie. Now its time to pay.

That was not a lie. The intel community sent her those talking points that were unclassified. She didn't lie at all. Stop WATCHING FOX NEWS and get back to reality. There's bigger issues than pointing the finger at Susan Rice. Why not point it at Clinton, for there was no security available. Why not point the finger at the intel community? Rice shouldn't take the fall.

What about Condi Rice who lied about weapons of mass destruction in Irak? Are u concerned about the death of Americans?? How many US service men and women have died in Irak and Afghanistan? Do u have any clue??

It is probably because of some people's inability to distinguish between the various forms that al Queda is taking that they avoiding mentioning them. Al Queda central (Bin Laden, et. al.) are degraded to the point of being pretty much irrelevant. Then, there are satellite Al Queda groups like Al Queda in Iraq (gone) and al Queda in the Arabian Peninsula (still a pest but not taking direction from Al Queda central).

And finally, there are al Queda wannabees and imitators like we find in Libya. These are really just isolated extremist terror elements not affiliated with al Queda except in name only. The fact that low information types like Fox news can't tell the difference led the intelligence community to release the information originally as "there may have been extremists elements involved."

Susan Rice told no lies. She clearly stated she was speaking of early information that was subject to investigation. The spontaneous protest remark was made in the context of the event may have been sparked in reaction to the protest in Egypt, which were in reaction to that horrible film. And her remarks were made after the event was over, so no one can say that anyone died as a result of her remarks

Good thing they aren't smart enough to notice the majority of us aren't falling for their hypocrisy any longer. As for the rest of the hysteria. Obviously tinfoil hats allowed the wearers to have secret spy satellite feeds directly conducted to their brains where they then privileged recipients of perfect knowledge not avail to anyone else and were able to instantly see through the large number of protests around the Middle East as orchestrated cover for an attack to be carried out in a country with no working internal security. Then again, there are a lot of countries around the world with no real working internal security, so we dearly hope the tinfoil brigade will foresee any future attack and provide instant and effective warning.

It's about John Kerry's senate seat. The shallow rethugs are still reeling from the election and they want another shot at trying to reclaim some semblance of power in the senate. Without that, how can they hope to repeal or modify Obamacare? They should be concerned about the house. Because with the low approval ratings of their majority held obstructionist Congress... it's just a matter of time before the 2014 elections take care of that and leave them with very little say so.

As Vadar might say, "I find your lack of faith disturbing". I mean, really, you think the Rebuplicans would be able to take over that seat that easily? Personally, I don't care which one, Rice or Kerry, gets the SOS position; whoever it is will follow orders and that's that. One may question those orders a bit more than the other, but they'll still be carried out.

There is no comparison between security at an Embassy - as Senator Collins was discussing - and security at a consulate like the one in Benghazi. And Senator Collins has to reach back to 1998? I am surprised that Senator Collins is taking this stance.

Makes no sense regardless of party. If your son was killed during a home invasion robbery and he called 9-1-1 7 hours ago without help, what would family members say about the police force? This was criminal folks and it's not going to go away despite what some hope.

Politics never cease to amaze me.

If he wants to nominate Kerry let him do it as well. Don't let one little "incident" on the Sunday talk shows be a reason to disqualify her. Let her go through the confirmation hearings in the Senate and then they'll determine whether or not to confirm her. And the GOP is going at the wrong person for the Benghazi incident. They should be asking Clinton why there wasn't enough security for the consulate. They should ask the intel community why the initial statements changed over time. This shouldn't be about Susan Rice. This shouldn't be a reason for her disqualification as SOS if the POTUS nominates her. They are point their fingers at the wrong person.

The lie was intentional to minimize the affect to Obama's reelection, can anyone who thinks otherwise provide a plausible reason for "modified" talking points?

Even then, for two weeks the administration all went out and defended the video gambit. Lots of deflection game playing to cover up the simple fact that they all watched for seven hours in real time and did nothing, then put together the deflection mask an hour later so the Pres could go off to his celeb fundraiser in Vegas and deal with it through his control of the media later. Which is why now the smear is that it was all not important at all and we need to forget about it. Because it is their last out being caught in their own self made pile of crap.

Rice was speaking based on the CIA intelligence available at the time. We have many more pressing issues to deal with while McCain and other Republicans try to make this a much bigger issue that it really is. I used to like McCain when he was the "Maverick Republican". Now he just comes across as a bitter loser and a very grumpy old man. He should retire.

The Republicans want the President to nominate Senator Kerry for Secretary of State, opening the door for Scott Brown to run for the vacated Massachusetts Senate Seat. The three card monty is not working on the President, and Scott Brown will not get the opportunity to attack another woman for a while. At the end of the day, the Senate will confirm Secretary Rice and the world will continue to spin, out of control, for the Republicans on Capitol Hill. The bigger issue on Capitol Hill is the fact the "Old White Men" are in charge of every committee in the US House of Representatives. I am guessing that the GOP failed to read the memo that outlined what women and minority voters did to them three weeks ago.

Colin Powell misleading information about WMD in Iraq, which he presented to the UN. Right after his presentation to the UN, we engaged in a war that should not have taken place. As for Susan Rice, she was given information by our intelligence dept., which she presented and now she's a big target for the Republican Party. If the story got out that an Al Qaeda affiliate planned this attack, that would discredit Obama and his foreign policy. Hence the coverup and stall.

You honestly believe that the CIA redacted the Al Qaeda reference because of source confidentiality and not pressure from the white House? There were videos of the attack. There was no demonstration that got out of hand. Large weapons were at the scene of the attack from the beginning. How could this ever have NOT been a pre-planned attack?

Terrorist did not took advantage of the situation and staged an attack.

During the attack there was only audio feed for the first 6 hours. Only during the last hour, after they all left the first compound and went to the second building, was the drone overhead. All thats in the testimony so far. During the audio feed it was being monitored at the State Dept, not at the WH. Again, in the testimony.

Congress saw no need to cancel their Turkey break, will probably posture for a week or so and then head off for their Santa break. Obama IS Santa and doesn't look interested in doing anything but buying votes with our kids' money. And then the dems will complain that the republicans are preventing them from getting things fixed. Which puts more dems in power for more of the same.... I suppose it will take hitting bottom for anyone to get us back on track. So be it.

Congress has so many breaks that it is impossible to know when they are working and when they are not. I believe the NOT WORKING wins the prize. Obama does not try to be Santa. If you are really paying attention to what is going on, you would know this. The GOP's besmirching the reputation of Susan Rice is nothing more than a game to try to keep President Obama from nominating her to be Secretary of State. She has years of experience working with State Department issues. She is a Rhodes Scholar (scholarship to attend the world renown Oxford). The Dems are trying to get on with the business of this country while these foolish GOP Senators continue to try to spin something out of nothing.
