Subscribe to RSSAmerican military forces in Kabul, Afghanistan, are celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday with a football game wearing jersey's donated by the New York Jets. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.
Obama, as has been his practice during previous holidays, reached out to service members from the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy.
"The president thanked each of them for their service and sacrifice and wished them and their families a happy Thanksgiving," the White House said.
The president was joining first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters, Sasha and Malia, later Thursday for dinner, where they were to be joined by White House staff members and guests.
In his weekly radio and Internet address, released in connection with the holiday, Obama urged Americans to put aside partisan differences and come together as a nation.
He said the country has "just emerged from a campaign season that was passionate, noisy and vital to our democracy."
While the election required voters to make choices, Obama said that Thanksgiving offered "a chance to put it all in perspective — to remember that, despite our differences, we are and always will be Americans first and foremost."
In the Republican Party address, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington state said the GOP is ready to work with Obama to avert impending tax increases, big spending cuts and other problems at year's end.

No Randy 9/11 was a terrorist attack on the United States, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were started using 9/11 as an excuse to get at the oil supplies and to funnel money to gigantic defense contractors (Kellog/Brown & Root etc). Why else would they station US Soldiers to protect oil pipelines and facilities and leave over 200 tons of C4 plastic explosives ungaurded? They know the explosives were there yet somehow it was all "stolen".

Nor can I find a single thing saying US troops are guarding any pipelines. I can find plenty saying AFGHAN soldiers have taken over guarding some after relieving police who were.

And one other thing-I know the Republicans are talking about what they call ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS. Instead of changing the age or benefit amounts how about these ideas to fix Social Security and Medicare. Lift the $ 108.000 cap to every dollar you earn you pay Social Security. How about a National lottery. How about $ 2.00 for every sports ticket purchased. $ 1.00 goes into each fund to help fix these two funds?? What do you people think??

@Michael, What a great idea! Add luxury tax to sport events and movies. I don't watch sports but I do go to the movies and I don't mind paying a dollar more to keep SS and Medicare solvent. Make sure the government don't get to "borrow" from SS fund whenever they run into budget shortfalls.
Why is Obqama calling the troops now? Isn't the election over?
In addition to sports events and movies and the like, tobacco and alcohol should be taxed 100% -- that would either raise substantial revenue for Social Security and Medicare, or it would make America much healthier due to people quitting the use of tobacco and alcohol due to the price.

I heard the other day that there are still a few million more votes to count (mostly Democratic states). But as the count is going now,Romney's percentage keeps going down. They think at the end it won't be over 47%. It seems no matter what he does he'll never escape that magic 47% number,lol.

But everyone I would rather pay a little more like people said to go to the movies, sports tickets etc to go into the Social Security and Medicare fund then to have the age changed to 65 for early retirement at lets say 70 for full retirement. All we are doing is hurting our kids and grandchildren by changing the age again. And the suggestion again is that they would have no right to touch the funds for anything except what they were meant for. We must send the word out now if you would rather go this way instead of the Republican way.

Since you are clearly unaware of this, let me fill you in. As of Oct 23, 2012, there are approx 200 military personnel in Iraq. They are under the command of the US ambassador.
So those re-deployed troops you insinuate are heading back to combat are mostly from units sent to replace units rotating out. Just thought I would clarify that. Next time do your research and don't rely on someone else's rhetoric.

It has been proven, al-Qaeda did not enter Iraq until AFTER the illegal invasion by Bush, and they entered in Iraq in RESPONSE to that invasion, but hey, facts don't matter to those people, not one bit.
In 2003, the most extensive violators of Security Council resolutions were Israel, Turkey and Morocco. Not Iraq, but, we invaded Iraq on blatant lies of WMD, causing al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), to be founded in 2003 as a reaction to the US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Actually, I am most thankful that yesterday I became a grandfather. My daughter had a healthy eight and a half pound boy. Both are doing fine. I'm a grandfather!

Bushs wars, 100 billion a year drug plan that's almost as expensive as Obamacare for far fewer people and a 400 billion dollar giveaway to the rich. Bushs last budget which ran Oct. 2008 through Oct. 2009 was projected to be in deficit by 1.2 trillion. Had Obama ran on Bushs last budget for his 4 years with no new programs the debt would still be 15.7 trillion.

I think Obama is doing all he can do, while not on vacation. He is indeed a fine leader?? Look at the drought the country is in and knowing that the corn is in short supply he has help the economy by not enforcing the mandate of 10% ethanol in our fuel, so we can get cheaper food. Well at least we enjoy cheaper gas but that will probably go up with the shortage corn to produce ethanol. yep one heck of a leader for the few and not the middle and lower class as he claims.

Maybe Hilliary Clinton, Susan Rice (Black and Female) or if they decide to change party affiliation, eithe Colin Powell or Condeleeza Rice. I, too, am a career military officer and can tell you that BHO is not widely supported because of his lack of leadership. Benghazi did not have an embassy. Benghazi was barely a consulate. The Ambassador was told by the Benghazi mayor to go back to Tripoli, that Benghazi was too dangerous. The Libyan military told him the same thing, as well as the biggest local militia chief. He ignored them all, placing himself, his team, the mayor, the local military commander and the militia chief in danger. Tripoli lacked any assault capability and is about 300 land miles from Benghazi. The closest strike team was apparently in Italy, some 600 miles away. By the time that team could be called out (and flown for ninety minutes), all contact with the Ambassador and his team, maybe because they were already dead. All sending more troops into a volatile situation would have produced is more dead Americans. Do you remember Black Hawk down in Somolia? Two helicopters and eight men dead, because they were sent in blind. No offense to the Ambassador's family or memory, but he was as responsible as anyone.

I don't think Obama is a bad person - he has a lovely family to which he seems devoted - it is his policies that I have problems with - but that being said, today is Thanksgiving - and the purpose of this article we are all commenting on was President Obama's call to service men and women serving overseas. Let's remember: we all are in our homes today - surrounded by family - and we are safe, thanks to all of the service men and women who give of themselves, their time, and at the expense of being away from their families - children away from their mother's and fathers - wives and husbands, parents - all being away from their loved ones. Today, let us all collectively THANK THESE WONDERFUL SERVICE MEN and WOMEN who out of love for our country, are serving in dangerous areas of the world in order to make OUR world better. But you know what?...i'll let the cat out of the bag...i'm Canadian , living in my home country. Guess what? We hate our prime minister too. But our economy is solid right now , but it's tentative. Canada and the U.S. are friends , we trade more with each other than any other country. Our economy largely depends on the U.S. economy. Canadians realize that Obama is not perfect but 85% of Canadians preferred Obama over Romney. Romney is a multi-millionaire and part of the " old boy's club " , in other words catering to his cronies. If you don't believe that then you have rose colored glasses on. They don't change and never will. Obama is trying to avoid the fiscal cliff , and taxing the rich more to help avoid it is the right thing to do instead of the ordinary joe taking the brunt as it has been since as far back as i can remember. He's trying to do something different instead of the status quo. We here in Canada watch what's going on in the U.S. It's frightening to see what's happening to our neighbors , especially in the last 20 years. Americans were at one time united and proud. That's gone now. Nobody trusts nobody , conspiracies around every corner , and greed and corruption are at a all time high. We're not naive enough to believe that Obama can cure all the ills, but with Romney you would most likely be involved in another war...that you can't afford. As for the RIF, we did that here too...about 25,000 service people less , but many of them were hired by contracting companies working for our Dept. of National Defence , and making more money than they did as military personnel.
As i said , the American people have spoke , it's time to let it go and hopefully the world's economic problems will improve , and raising your standard of living as well.

Can you write a check to the local foodbank? Buy personal items for a homeless person? Toys for tots? Anything other than sniping at each other on Thanksgiving Day? Looks like the right wing crazies are still upset about having a human president. I feel your pain! You tried your best to get Romney the Robot elected and John "wrong on everything" McCain 4 years before. What else can you do. But look at the bright side. You had 8 years of the most incompetent president in our history. 8 years of war, torture and economic disaster. And you still have a majority in the House to block or screw up anything that might help the country. They should be able to keep the economy in the toilet, unemployment high and maybe even start another war. Another war might be a tough one but you can hope.

I can't speak for JimS, but I try to keep my heart and wallet open to others. This despite the fact that my health could be alot better, and that I have been out of work for 33 of the last 39 months. My unemployment ended at 24 months, not 99 as some will have believe. I pay for half of my son's (and his disabled wife) gasoline and groceries. I support my church, and I routinely contribute to its charitable outreach. And all that while burning through my retirement savings. And since I turn 62 in 10 days, I would be virtually unemployable even if my health was good.

I sure hope that the Tea-Partiers don't hold back our nation's recovery. I hope that the Republican party can "grow a pair" and not be pushed around by the Tea Party. But you're right: "Any obstructionist for now on will be marked and alienated by the American voters in the next election" ( I took out the all caps). I sure hope it doesn't have to come to where our nation's recovery is sabotaged for another two years, but if they do it again it will be the same as this last election: We will vote out all those who caused the trouble. Hundreds of millions of super-pac money won't be enough to change our minds. It will be a sweep. We will "clean house", so to speak.
As always, our President is a class act. Love him and proud to be an American again!
