Florida Congressman Allen West still not conceding defeat in House race

Joe Skipper / REUTERS

Republican U.S. Rep. Allen West, seen here on Oct. 18 during a campaign stop in South Palm Beach, Fla., isn't reacy to concede to Democrat Patrick Murphy.

Tea Party-backed Republican Congressman Allen West said he was still not ready to concede defeat on Sunday, almost two weeks after the Nov. 6 election, when the clock ran out on a partial recount in South Florida.

Results showing West trailing Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy by 1,900 votes were now expected to be turned over to the state Division of Elections for official certification.

West was granted a recount of early ballots in St. Lucie county at the weekend, but officials were unable to complete the process before time ran out at midday on Sunday.

"Today at noon, it became clear Patrick Murphy will be officially certified as the next congressman from the 18th Congressional District," said Murphy's campaign manager Anthony Kusich. "It is beyond time to put this campaign behind us."

Under Florida law, in the event of an incomplete recount the original returns are automatically submitted for certification by the state.

"This is election is far from over," said West's campaign manager, Tim Edson, in a statement calling the results "highly suspect."

"We will continue to fight on behalf of all voters in District 18 to ensure a fair and accurate count of their votes," he added, without saying how the campaign planned to challenge the result.

West, 51, a former Army lieutenant colonel, is seeking his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives, where Republicans held onto their majority in the election.

With the help of the conservative Tea Party movement, West amassed one of the largest campaign war chests among House Republicans. His supporters include Americans for Prosperity, the conservative political advocacy group funded by the billionaire Koch brothers.

Murphy, 29, a political newcomer in his first congressional race, ran a surprisingly well-backed campaign focused on branding West as a divisive right-wing extremist.

Anyone else find it at least slightly ironic to now see, 12 years later, a right-wing Republican screaming for more recounts in Florida? My, what an interesting world. LOL. Mr. West, we have a Mr. Gore on line 1, says it's time for you to go.

He got his recount and Murphy had over 270 more votes than when the recount started. He doesn't get it that he lost by more than 2000 votes.

still not conceding...well..that's called 'delayed gratification' - a republican approach to life..

or...maybe...he believes that Republicans have a secret to success in Florida in such a 'too - close-to call' situation. Or fraud, such as 2000 Bush v Gore

Stardate 5216 Adam West's estate has exhumed his coffin full of cobwebs dust and per his will so he may once again protest the count of the 2012 elections.

West was charged with violating articles 128 (assault) and 134 (general article) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. During a hearing held as part of an Article 32 investigation in November 2003. He was discharged under an article 15 as opposed to a Court Marshall.

Not enough people like or trust you as a representative, you lost, now go away.

The Robert Byrd wing of the Democrat Party must looooove seeing Allen West lose.

But why should we be surprised?

After all, Democrats are the party of:

* The Ku Klux Klan

* Segregation

* Filibustering the Civil Rights Act

* Impugning and maligning Justice Clarence Thomas at all costs

* Racists cartoons against Condoleeza Rice

And more!

The Left sure are a hateful, intolerant, racist bunch!

Tea Party types like West only damage the Republican Party's already tarnished image. That's OK by me, the sooner the Republican Party fades into oblivion the better.

The Tea Party is just one component of a political party that has caused our country great harm. It's just a matter of time before this political disease is stomped out by American voters.

Untrue, Devil's Son. They didn't "leave" the Party.

Al Gore Sr., Theodore Bilbo, William Fullbright, John Stennis, Bob Byrd, George Wallace, et. al.

ALL remained loyal Democrats, who fought against the rights of Black Americans.

So why should it surprise us that Democrats have a pointed VITRIOL toward Allen West?? Hmm, I wonder why??

And wrong, Leland, and wrong R. Scalzo.

Here is some info that can help clarify:

In conjunction with the civil rights movement, Lyndon Johnson overcame southern resistance and convinced Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed most forms of racial segregation. Johnson signed it into law on July 2, 1964. Legend has it that, as he put down his pen, Johnson told an aide, "We have lost the South for a generation," anticipating a coming backlash from Southern whites against Johnson's Democratic Party.

Johnson was prophetic...Super majority of Southern Democrats now all call the Republican party home.

Arthur66,

You are either dense, deliberately ignoring history, or you are just pathetically trolling. The flight of Southern Democrats began with the Civil Rights acts, took on urgency with Nixon's "Southern Strategy," and came to full completion under Reagan. Byrd was the only one-time Southern Democrat I can think of who ended his career as a Democrat.

Only liars and fools think they can pull that old party history scam that, for some reason, you think is some kind of historical insult and is meaningful. Everyone knows the truth--the types of people who were the segregationist Southern Democrats long ago became the base of the Republican Party. And remain there, kicking and screaming about being dragged into the light of the 21st Century.

If only we in the Democratic Party could find an African-American to nominate for President then we could elect that African-American President then re-nominate that African-American and re-elect that African-American. That's OK by me, the sooner the Republican Party fades into oblivion the better.

When that happens, the country will be worse off. We need at least TWO vibrant political parties in this country. When a party has, or thinks it has, a permanent lock on re-election, it grows stale and tired.

Unfortunately, the GOP seems hellbent into fading into the sunset. It reminds me of the Catholic Church ... proclaiming its ideological purity as it sinks in irrelevance.

They were Democrats during Lincoln's day and during the 1950's. Today there are Republicans and Tea Baggers. This is not an issue of party, it is about the ideals of the Confederacy which unfortunately are still alive today. They are still a real force today, in many cases descendants of the originals and they are still most evident in the Southern States. This is not to get down on all Southerners. Many have changed over the generations and many in the South have no links to the original Confederacy.

The parties have changed and by the 1960's the Dixiecrats were a dying breed. But as they faded from view among Democrats they gained new life in the Republican Party. The Parties do morph and it is all about going after voters. What is at issue is the ideology of a particular voting block. That voting block really hasn't changed so much in 150 years. They are not the same people, but in many ways, they still think the same way. Shouldn't be surprising that all of a sudden after losing the Presidential election, many are talking succession. It isn't as much the Party, but the people in the Party.

Regarding the election process, it doesn't matter which party Mr. West belongs to. What matters is the vote count. The vote count is very clear that he did NOT win, by about 2,000 votes. His conceding or not is irrelevant. It's a matter of gracious and gentlemanly conduct, obviously missing from his repertoire. By not conceding he shows his true colors of divisiveness, backbiting, and accusatory nature. If he chooses to run again, that will be up to him; as for the election of 2012, he lost.

The election is over, and should be certified. It doesn't matter if somebody doesn't concede if all the votes have been counted and recounted; if the winner is clear, then they should be given the win.

West is trying to make people spend more money and waste more time: a hallmark of the tea party. Or else, West spent his campaign dollars on something other than the campaign, and is trying to hide something.

This one is a clear win for Murphy in Florida, but the Ohio Sec. of State is still sitting on the recount of provisional ballots for Ohio statehouse positions, and is being forced to actually count some of the ballots that were not yet counted for those positions. I'm glad that Pres. Obama had a clear victory in Ohio, because otherwise the whole country would be as fed up as Ohio is.

If he had agreed to it in the beginning, it would have already been completed and the results would be verified and there would be no argument. By blocking a full recount they have managed to cast doubt on the process and make people wonder if they have something to hide. Well done.

    Arizona Democrat-

Republicans are always a little slow on the uptake. Many (if you take some of their posts on this site at their word) don't realize all the old Southern Democrats switched parties when sane Democrats passed the Civil Rights legislation. But they're catching up - Just last week one of my rightie acquaintances informed me that Reagan is the new governor of California. He thinks he ran as a Democrat.

BTW - Being a Dem in Arizona must be similar to being one here in south Georgia. Some of the moronic sound bytes you hear simply make you more and more sure of your affiliation. Hang in there. though. The literacy rate is inching up toward double figures.

    justicenonsense-

What would Mr. Murphy have to be worried about? Apparently, the recount appears to be solidifying his lead. In the world of reality, as unfamiliar as it is to 'wingers', wasting time is well.... a waste of time, and that's the point with this particular waste of time. The country has a deadline with the Fiscal Cliff, and you morons are farting around with probably the worst representative in congress. Just what is it you think you're accomplishing?

WHY cannot the Justice Department charge the Koch Bros. with a Federal Crime involving transactions with Iran and, possibly North Korea, under light of these Countries are under an imposed Embargo by the United States?

Ever wonder WHY the Supreme Court recognized that Corporations were People? Could they have been BOUGHT OFF by one or more Corporations such as the Koch Bros. as did a majority of Republican Candidates as each held meeting with them at one time or another whether Tea Party or not?

The Robert Byrd wing of the Democrat Party must looooove seeing Allen West lose.

But why should we be surprised?

After all, Democrats are the party of:

    * The Ku Klux Klan

    * Segregation

    * Filibustering the Civil Rights Act

    * Impugning and maligning Justice Clarence Thomas at all costs

    * Racists cartoons against Condoleeza Rice

    And more!

The Left sure are a hateful, intolerant, racist bunch!

Practicing for the 2016 election I see. It's good to see that the Republicans won't be changing their tactics.

Arthur66,.... nice try. Do you know why the Democrats dislike Allen, Condi and Judge Thomas? Because they suck at their positions. The problem, the Republicans and their wing nuts, think that these 3 have ZELCH for brains hence wing nuts like yourself perceived them as equal entities (same basket), because they are BLACK Americans...

LOL... only you would be ignorant enough to have made such suggestion thinking that the Democrats dislike these three...

Allen West is an idiot. All you have to do is to look at his voting record and his solutions.

Condi Rice is a smart lady with little backbone as Secretary of State. Please inform us a couple of important accomplishment she has done behalf of American foreign policy. She pale in comparison to Hilary Clinton. It might be unfair, because Hilary may turn out to be one of the best, but Ms Rice may have had the best intention, but she rarely/actually never went against her boss, who clearly did not bat above 500. Judge Thomas,... hmmmm, given your argument on his behalf, then should be conclude that you are for Citizen United decision and allowing your spouse to accept contributions from companies that are involved with concurrent cases...

one big hypocrite... just because you judge by skin color, it does not mean others do. No, Democrats generally don't like them becasue of their positions. If you don't know, ask!

BTW, if people were voting via skin color, then one would have ventured that West would have got 50% of the vote??? no??? hmmm, obviously you did not ask yourself why....

West was charged with violating articles 128 (assault) and 134 (general article) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. During a hearing held as part of an Article 32 investigation in November 2003. He was discharged under an article 15 as opposed to a Court Marshall.

Antistupidity? What an ironic name considering the above is a lie. West retired as a Lt. Col. with full military benefits in 2004 after he was fined only $5,000. Most of the above was dismissed and 95 members of Congress wrote to the Secretary of the Army in support of him.

You make it sound like he was stripped of rank and given a dishonorable discharge. Tell the whole fukking truth.

Romney/Ryan were supported by the billionaire club, as well West and they both lost; I think that tells us that money can't buy an election afterall. I saw that in OK back several years ago also, except the Rep. candidate was usng his own money left over from when he was US Congressman. Perhaps the Koch Bros., Karl Rove, and others that poured money into supporting their Republican millionaire friends would be nice and put some of that money into helping NJ, and NY recover from the Sandy Superstorm.

carpenter7: The Democrats brought in UN observers to watch over our elections. Hoping they would find proof of right-wing suppression. Remember, it was all over the news UNTIl they made their report.

Their report stated they saw no signs of voter fraud, however, since most jurisdictions did not require a photo id to vote, they concluded you would never be able to tell if there was fraud. Uninanamous conclusion from representatives from 63 countries. Look it up and read the report. That's right, the people brought in to find VOTER SUPPRESSION, actually said we should require PHOTO ID!!!

Since the publicity stunt backfired, the mainstream media decided not to report the published report. Wonder why?

            #5.4 - Sun Nov 18, 2012 10:10 PM EST

The UN had been sending observers to our elections since 2002. This was nothing new this year, except Texas made a big deal out of it.

I don't mind requiring photo ID; however, you have to give such a thing to the populace FOR FREE. Not everyone drives, not everyone has a passport. To require someone to spend money to purchase a state license or a passport so that they could do their civic duty is wrong. That would be like requiring people to pay a cover charge to serve on mandatory jury duty. However, I doubt the GOP would support paying for photo IDs.

You might not need an id to vote, but you do need to be on the rolls, and we aren't seeing people complaining that someone else voted for them. Anyone that votes without an id must still show up on the rolls. To be on the rolls they must register. It would seem that id's at voting places aren't the problem. Maybe you should complain about the process of registering, or have they proved that that is actually quite accurate and works well, so you have to go after the id at the polls issue. It would seem that if they have id's at the polls, and they had that id when they registered, the problem started at registration, not while voting. Even id fraud lets them register, then use the same id at voting time.

Why do people rally against the UN for just about everything, but then the UN says something that supports one little issue they have, and all of a sudden the UN is the best organization in the world.

Arthur66 - Like you don't know. Just to refresh your memory, West was the one who said on a national radio show that "....if ballots won't do it, bullets will." He's also the one who called the entire congressional black caucus COMMUNISTS. He is, to be succinct, BAT SNOT CRAZY. But I guess his lack of contact with reality matches yours so you gotta support him. Bet the two of you have the same style of tin foil hats.

Artur is implying that its because West is black. I was surprised the first time I saw West that he was black. But I already despised him for the quotes I had read.

tag: My experience was the same as yours. I read quotes from West and thought, "Geez, this guy is out of his mind!" Only after did I see he's black--and then my thought was, "Man, he's swallowed the Uncle Tom thing hook, line, and sinker." Clearly, he'd rather be rich than morally true.

As for those who wonder about his having been a lieutenant colonel, what neither he nor the GOP mentioned when he ran in 2010--he was kicked out of the military, barely saved from a court martial, having been charged with assault among other military violations.

Good riddance, indeed. I'm with those here who understand we need cooperation and compromise from Congress, not more obstruction against our national interests just for the sake of making our president look bad!

Vote for a fully democratic Congress in 2014 so our president can complete his mission to save America's middle class.

seriously? I mean really? Are you ACTUALLY implying that a democrat has problems with Allen West because of the colour of his skin? Maybe it's because he is a man?

This is one of my favorite Republican tactics. Shouting out something that is clearly so antithetical as to be nonsense and their rank and file believing it.

Arthur, my friend adjust your tin foil hat, back away from the talk radio and get a life. If you want a clear picture of how Democrats vs Republicans feel about this issue, rerun the conventions. You'll see exactly who is biased and how they are biased.

Now thats a good joke! Romney having tea with West?!? HA! Romney will go back..has gone back..to his millionaire buddies at the country club and the executive tea room. West can go home and collect his military pension. But talking about tea, how does the T party justify supporting this egotistical, womanizing, blowhard? I thought the T party was all about high moral, evangelical stuff, where does West come in? He doesn't even have enough class to admit he lost.

You hit it right on the head. The Republicans were assured that between massive amounts of money coming in from deep pockets, dirty tricks played by Super PACs (not affiliated with the campaign), and voter suppression through voter ID laws and limiting poll access, that this election was in the bag both for the top ticket, but also for Senate and House seats.

Unfortunately for them, Democrats and independent voters didn't get that memo and voted for their best interests instead of falling for the GOP games. It's scary because the GOP games probably would have worked pretty well not too many years back when money could control 95% of the messages going out to the general population. Between cable and the internet and a more informed electorate it's close to impossible to control all information now.

Antonio Villaraigosa is a very effective Mayor of Los Angeles, who could possibly make a successful run for Governor of California someday. As far as Governor Brown is concerned, I cannot imagine how you arrive at the derogatory nomenclature "Governor Moonbeam." Brown is a very solid, very down-to-earth politician. He has been around Californian politics for decades, in many capacities.

West and the Right lost this time. Stop acting like petulant little babies who didn't get the toy they wanted. I think Aurthur you need to either change the tin foil in your beanie or go back downstairs in your mothers house if you are hearing coded dog wistles.

Do know what Allen West even stands for? Bottom line Arty, the people of his Florida district 22 realized West is NOT what they want to represent them. Allen was so bad even the Army gave him an Article 15 discharge. Defending Allen proves you and your radical right wing party are not fit to govern.

Mark: Obama is a black-center-right president? That belief is what is pulling all the right-wing out of the woodwork to a frenzy. The thought that it could get even worse is why people are fighting so hard against Obama.

Wealth redistibution is unconstitutional. Whether done by R's to the corps or people, or the D's to corps and people. Change the Constitution and there won't be any more to argue about. In other words, do it LEGALLY, and no one can argue. Get it?

Stunned by the Age: Raising taxes for the general welfare is listed in the Constitution as one of the most critical of Congressional duties. We had a GOP president who started two wars without ever putting a dime of either one in the federal budget--then he gave out tax cuts to his wealthy cronies.

How you can call this wealth redistribution when we are trying to raise the lowest taxes in our history to pay for two wars--one the longest in our history, still ongoing--after irrational, deep cuts not enacted for the nation's sake?

We would not be suffering this deficit but for those cuts and those wars--one of which was wholly unnecessary.

Your claim that raising taxes is illegal is utterly without merit.

Actually, I think Arthur is mocking you/us. He's playing devils advocate by implying racism. I think perhaps he's trying to say that the reason Republicans voted against Obama was because he was an incompetent hate monger with an ego the side of Nevada(as if after Bush they could attack anyone on an outside ego. Remember the aircraft carrier incident?)

Again, what colour is the sky on your planet, Arthur?

I am a 40-something White woman, I am married to a 50-something Hispanic man, one of my Best friends is a Black woman, I was one of her bridesmaids, as a matter of fact, we have known each other for over 35 years. Another of my Best friends is a man who happens to be Gay, we have also known each other for 30+ years. I am also a Democrat, who was once a Republican, I was friends with these two wonderful people, while still considering myself a Republican. Also I happen to live in one of the Reddest states in the West, and my friendship with these two, and others, was looked askance at, to put it MILDLY. However, this did not affect the way I thought of, or felt about all of my friends. The reason that I am saying this is, that there are people out there that may say that they're not racists, and then put REALLY STUPID posts up on this vine, which to the rest of us, only proves exactly the opposite ! Now to the topic at hand.... Allen West is a man who is a racist himself, he is the worst kind, a man who hates his OWN race ! It is abundantly clear every time he opens his mouth, about the Black Caucus in the House of Representatives. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is another one, a Black man who hates his own race. He also (Allen West), sounds like one of those Bat-Crap Crazy, conspiricy theorists that follow that idiot Glenn Beck so avidly ! Just admit defeat already, and go join all your other Bat-Crap Crazy pals.

                          To Arthur66:

Drunk fat and stupid is no way to go through life.

Bringing up 50 year old information regarding dixiecrats isn't really relevent to the conversation, but then again, when you have zero current examples to go to, you try and explain away your halfwit tea ball-licking party stupidity, with hyperbole.

He can call it quits sometime in mid 2013. Of course everyone will have forgotten him by then anyway.

He can always set up a table and chair outside of the state house ansd decale himself Lord of the Sidewalk.

                          R. Scalzo,

Do not believe that for a second. Fox will hand him a robe and welcome West into the fold; you watch. Though I share your sentiment. Nothing better could happen for the country than for West to fade into obscurity along with everyone that supports his divisionist attitude.
