Democrat Jay Inslee
Democrat Jay Inslee has won the Washington state governor’s race, NBC News projected Friday night.
Republican Rob McKenna called Inslee shortly before 6 p.m. Pacific Time to concede the race and congratulate the governor-elect on winning, Randy Pepple, McKenna’s campaign manager told reporters, the Seattle Times reported.
With the Washington race conceded, Democrats won seven out of 11 governor races this year.
Inslee thanked McKenna, Washington’s attorney general, for what he described as a gracious conversation, The Associated Press reported. Inslee was a U.S. representative but resigned last March to focus on running for the governor’s seat.
The decision brings to end one of the most-watched, most-expensive gubernatorial races in the country. The two candidates and outside political groups raised and spent some $40 million in the race.
Inslee's campaign was built largely around his plans to spur job growth by investing in clean energy and other specific sectors.
Both candidates vowed to not raise taxes, but in January lawmakers will begin negotiations over how to deal with a budget shortfall and the need for more education funding.
Inslee has already started the process of forming a team that will help him transition to office, AP reported.
Inslee had steadily held a 51 percent advantage in the race as ballots were counted this week.
Republicans last won a Washington governor's race in 1980, when John Spellman was elected.

Yes, we can...
yet another repudiation of failed GOP politics...I JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH....as the lyric goes...
What happened to all that Democratic "oversampling"?
Correct, Senator Graham.
C'mon, people. When even Lindsey Graham can read the writing on the wall, the fat lady has sung.
Welcome to the 21st century, GOP!
The Dems also retook control of the Oregon House of Representative (already had the Senate) as well as the Colorado House, the New Hampshire House, and both houses of the legislatures in Maine and Minnesota.
And with the White House and a pickup of two Senate seats, not a bad haul overall.
more victories for the Democrats....the more the merrier...
Merry Christmas - that has come early.
Moved from Ohio to Washington 10 years ago, partly due to the politics. Once again proud to be a Washingtonian. :-)
Career Washington D.C. politican who is going to implement the same failed policies as Mr. Obama.
@Ido,
Still hanging around I see. Shouldn't you be trying to figure out what in the world went wrong instead of continuing the same bat guano? Oh, I see, you are still in the denial stage of the loss. That will pass and you can reassured your extreme right wing position will be ignored. Think about it.
McKenna got exactly what he had coming. His record as attorney general plainly showed he favored business over people, and while he avoided sounding like most of the national republicans, he didn't repudiate any of their platform either. The voters noticed....
And in two years we will vote more of the radical Republicans out of office. America does not need to go back to the Feudal Lordship Days of the Dark Ages.
Have you noticed that FL still has not reported the voting outcome even though CA, NY, and other areas with 3 times the population of FL (i.e. CA) had reported their results the same day of voting. Gov. Rethuglican Scott just needs a little more National attention after being stopped by the courts order with voter's suppression. So he's showing his Tea Party pigheaded temper by keeping the info from being reported as an additional win for Obama/Dems. What a pity for those in FL, who elected such a Gestapo. And boy, does he hate the teacher's guts, too!! maybe they have gotten smart and will vote the schmuck out in 2 years. They still have one of the highest unemployment rates.
I think THIS is what cost Rob McKenna the Washington election:

From the article:
This is great news! Another Democratic victory and another win for the American people.
This is also good news. Another politician, who reached back for the past, has fallen.
Alongside Obama's resounding election victory, Mitch McConnell must be in a state of despair.
The Republicans' money did not help them. Nor did their money rescue these oppressors from well-earned defeat.
The GOP should bury its earth-polluting mantra of "drill baby drill."
Hopefully, 1980 was the last Washinton governor's race that the right will win.
Obama, stay on course, continue to move this country Forward.
Really Ido? As opposed to the career Republican politicians that contributed to the current economic environment?
Breaking news from PNN (the Pigotry News Network)...

Obama just won Florida -
never a doubt in my mind. Ryan's voucher plan has helped.

....and for Pubbies the bleeding continues,.........
Progressives > Liberals > Democrats = Tax + Spend + Redistribute = NO bipartisanship.
There, that is the Progressive way of governing.
Mr. Obama is going to continue with his "Man on Five" Chicago politics......can't get his agenda through Congress, he will use Executive Order Fiat and regulation changes via his Progressive Cabinet members.....been there ALREADY done that.
So, Mr. Obama is talking about "working across the aisle" ? Yeah, right. His political henchman Mr. "Pocket Veto" Reid is standing by to make sure that does not happen.
Ido, If you don't think republicans have been "redistributing"the wealthy upwardly over the last 30 years you have been living in a bubble. it is NOT the that the wealthy have discover how to produce more money and that is why the gap between the wealthy and the rest of us as exponentially grown. The rich have been take away from the working class and INCREASING their wealth.
30 years ago a janitor could earn a modest livng wage, enough to keep a modest home and food on the table. But while that janitors wages have stagnated over the past 30 years, they CEO has increased his wealth 300%. That is redistribution of wealth.
Ido, I would rather have Tax and Spend (a misnomer as Democrats spend less than republicans when in office) Democrat in power than the NO TAXES AND SPEND republicans in power. Just look at every time republicans have been in power. They have ALWAYS lowered taxes and INCREASED SPENDING. The spending is usually all military and in support of their friends in big business like big oil.
The truth is that Democrats are far more FRUGAL with our money than republicans have ever been. Just research the FACTS and not the right wing spin(lies) and you will be amazed how bad republicans manage our money.
ldo: time to move to China for your Republican heaven: no regulation, rigged elections, no unions, no health care, low wages and troops to shoot those pesky democratic leaning folks.
This is good! McKenna joined the lawsuit against "ObamaCare", in spite of the governor and the people of Washington telling him not to. He followed his party rather than the people that paid his salary. May obscurity follow him for the rest of his life.
Robert In Oregon - I love that YouTube - Why McKenna lost. It was one nasty campaign. A couple good commercials pointed out he could be another Scott Walker. One liked him to the Tea Party, which told most of us that he wasn't moderate and the other Womens issues.
I put the utube on my facebook. Thanks.
Actually, the republicans killed in gubernatorial races this year, probably riding the coattails of the fiscal conservative movement (TP). If they will only follow through and actually cut spending, I'd not be upset, as long as they cut the right things coupled with eliminating big corporation tax breaks. Leave the schools alone. The support for Romney shows that education is still our top priority.
Pigotry #1.3, More Victories for the Dem's - "Thanks to the TeaBagHaters" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having actually done business with Jay; he did the adoption work for our oldest son in the early eighties. I can say he is a very nice sensitive gentleman. Back in those "early years" he was a practicing attorney in Selah WA. Selah and all of Central Washington is agriculturally based and therefor very red. He successfully ran for several terms for the US House from the area. It should say something to the nay sayers that Jay was able to successfully work with the Republicans in his district and not only get elected but reelected. Good for Jay good for Washington State.
Patty Murray For President 2016
edit it was only 1 term in the US house from Central Washington, I was going on dead reckoning, which is fairly hung over this am!
ldo,
Fascists > Conservatives > Republicans = Tax Breaks for the rich + Tax hikes for the middle class and the poor + Deficit Spending for wars + Schemes that Redistribute the money to the 1% = Oligarchy + NO Democracy.
IDO, He's governor of Washington STATE, he's not in D.C.!
Are you really that stupid that you don't know one from the other?
IDO - as a former republican (who still has severe issues voting democrat ;P), GIVE IT A REST!
The republican party has NOBODY to blame for themselves. Fiscally, yes, I agree with what they SAY (which is a far cry from what they do), but socially.......we aren't even on the same planet.
The GOP needs to embrace moderates and focus squarely on fiscal issues. You start crying about rape, injecting God, talking about "leeches and parasites", and trying to shape people in your party who don't look like you or act like you (gays anyone?) AND YOU WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE.
You can bitch and moan all you want, but the only thing consistent will be your losing record.
...coatail effect...
.
FORWARD...
"losing a demographic game" is all you hear from the Pubbies as to why they lost so handily.
How bout this reason: Your policies/ideology suck.
Obama. Forward.
Awesome, We didn't want no Teabagger running Our State.
Thank God! I am happy to know the people rejecting the Tea Party with their radical agenda.
Republicans of 40 years ago would have congratulated the winner and recognized the authority conferred by his win an exercise in democracy. Unfortunately, as with Obama's stunning triumph on the national leve , the radical dogmatic cretins that control today's Republican Party seem incapable of acknowledging that winners are entitled to govern. They prefer that Americans continue to suffer the lack of governance that obstructionism produces, as they have preferred for 3 1/2 years. They appear to insist on employment of minority rule in the Senate with their insidious invocation of filibusters that cripples our nation's financial recovery. Although I respect the right of people to dissent as much as the next person this Nazi-like goose stepping in defense of their rejected ideas is getting so tiresome. In fact, their apparent insistence on continued obstructionism is a pathetic display not only of childishness but of contempt for democracy itself and of the majority of the American people. Obama won by about 3 million votes and by 126 electoral votes. By contrast, George W. Bush lost the popular vote in 2000 but won a slim majority of electoral votes, and he deemed his victory to be a mandate that entitled him to start a an unnecessary war that took 5000 American lives.
The majority of Americans don't want to hear any more of your hateful rhetoric or your trickle up fraud that you've been playing to destroy America's middle class. Your contempt for anything but your own propaganda demeans you all. As others gruffer than I have stated, it's time for you guys to STFU and get out of progress' way.
Hey Mich, the Trickle up is not coming down, is that how it works ?????????????????
As an Independent voter in WA I'm not sure if Mr. Inslee was the right choice. This was one of the more difficult races for me. I tend to lean a bit left of center - just a bit - but I felt like Jay Inslee was running on the platform of "Hey guys, I'm a Democrat! Vote for me!" while McKenna actually had substance. If you watch the debates it shows through pretty clearly.
The fact that Republican Kim Wyman, the Secretary of State for Washington, won re-election by only around 40,000 votes is a bit scary seeing as she was endorsed by - well just about everybody.
I prefer not to vote for a party but for individuals and in this case I think McKenna was the better individual.
yaay... thanks alot again King County.... let's add more to our already high debt.. now you can smoke a joint and marry the dude (if you're also a dude) you like the most in our 'great' state.. again, "thanks" king county.
You're Welcome. It truely has been MY PLEASURE!
Feel free to move to Idaho.
JuanPerez, you can move you know if you don't like it. The majority of the people wanted this, and they voted and got it. Wake up slick, you side lost, again. That should tell you the failed policies of the GOP are no longer demanded, in fact, they have gotten buried in the last two elections.
Juan: just move to Texas for one of those no skill, no pay jobs
As a Washingtonian, I am glad that McKenna conceded so quickly. I was not looking forward to a Thanksgiving full of political bickering & recounts like we had 4 and 8 years ago with Dino Rossi and John Carlson. I voted for Inslee and I am glad we won.
As RAF alluded to above... Even though he didnt mention two more Washington Liberal Firsts.. R74 & I502... it really was a good week for a progressive/liberal (and the nation)
It turns out American's don't like GOP obstruction after all.
Don't celebrate too much. Now their plan is to obstruct everything AGAIN so they can say he still hasn't fixed anything in the 2014 elections. There was one fundraiser held Wednesday, after the election. It was for Sen McConnell's 14 reelection fund. More of the same.
even the Koch brothers can not afford another 4 years of destroying the american economy to try and make Obama a two term president ... they will let their servants, the Republican party, know it is time for a new script
So surprised by the overall Governor races. Up until now it seems that the media have focused on how many Republican governors there are in this Country and yet with this announcement of how many Democratic gubernatorial candidates won office it really blunts U.S. House Speaker's argument about Obama not having a mandate to raise taxes because of the retention of the Republican Party (though redistricting). Look at the more open and true message at the state level races.
Not much respect for Jay Inslee, he quit in the middle of his term as U.S. House Rep. Jay quit on his consituents, leaving us un-represented in D.C. Just another quitter, scumbag, self centered, typical run of the mill politician, who cannot be trusted!! Cost the State millions to run another election for his seat!!
edwin jackson, yes he did quit. He didn't do like lying Ryan did, run for VP and his old office. He did win his old office back because of stupid low informed people, but they will receive what they wanted. A complete dirt bag.
So to call Inslee names is wrong, if he lost, he was out of office competely, off the govt tit, so to speak. Your lying ryan, not so much.
Why are you dingbats in denial so violently opposed to those who win a majority of votes in a fair exercise of democracy. Your dogmatism is so tiresome.
Hey Sally Ann, understand Ryan's congressional district has a democrat majority -- are they the "stupid low informed people" you're referring to?
@CME mgmt, hey, who said the R's had all the low informed? I never did, there are stupid people from all sides. Don' believe me, just read some of the posts here. But like I said, lying Ryan is still feeding on the govt tit, right? Inslee would have been out of elected office for at least two yrs if he would have lost.
Plus, WA didn't need another GOP governor like Wisconsin and Ohio has. Most people living here do have sense of what is right and what isn't.
what's it going to take to make everyone happy?
what it's going to take is the realization that everyone isn't going to be happy
sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
play the cards your delt and go on, the world hasn't ended and you're not dying of disapointment.
shut the F*** up and go on.
We are the United States = A team of 300+ million If someone is hurting do we ask what party they belong to?.......... NO, we run to help because we care for our fellow man. when tragity happens to our friends or neighbors we instintivly help and know it's the right thing to do. But just because you might know the person or not doesn't make them any more or less deserving or you'r fellow man.
Fight for yourself and your own but dont p**s on the other guys shoes just because they have different opinions than you
*Kinda sounds like the stuff you learned in grade school* eh?
7 of 11 governors races to Dems. Dems pick up seats in House and Senate. Where are all the know-it-all right-wingers who predicted the "liberals will get a wake up call" from this election? Did you wake up yet?
Thank Goodness Michele Bachmann squeaked out a win because we need a constant reminder of how far off the deep end Today s Republicans have gone and the late night comics need a Fountainhead of Material that Michele Bachman so willing provides.
@ted, Sorry I disagree. Ms. Bachman needs to be sent home. She is not someone I want to govern anything.
Her constituents want her "off the deep end crazy"! They need another two years to get educated on how crazy she is.
in the grand scheme of things, who cares? When it takes $20 million (assume the campaign funding was evenly split) just to get into office, what you find yourself with is someone who really doesn't have your interests at heart - either Republican or Democrat. Don't think for one second that these candidates are not now encumbered to the special interests that helped them get elected. Democracy? Really? I laugh. Washington state proud of its pot and gay marriage initiatives (but as of now charter schools haven't been approved)? This state is clearly ass backwards.
And I am thankful the charter schools measure hasnt passed either... and I will be even happier when the state Supreme Court rules Timmy Eyma's last and latest measure to be unconstitutional.
EMDF9A, sorry, I hope Eyma's last measure is constitutional. It will keep some people from wasting the taxpayers money on a bunch of feel good items. And I also hope the charter school meausre goes down in flames, just like the light rail from OR to SW WA went down on the maintance and operation costs some. but not all the taxpayers got to vote on. It's the third time for light rail to go down, and hopefully the 4th time for charter schools to go down.
Jsheld,
Why are you so against the results of a democratic election? Can't you just accept that your way of thinking was rejected by the voters of Washington? You guys in denial are intellectual frauds. Take your losing ideas and shove it.
It's good to see that this populace can see through the fog the GOP has thrown up in front of everyone. It is all a conservative "entertainment" complex. More money to the wealthy and make the middle class pay for the debt. When you peal back the false hoods and look, you see what the GOP has become. They want the wealthy to rule the world and everyone else to be their servants.
We can balance the budget and get the taxes in balance. The GOP won't let it happen because of a silly pledge to Norquist. A disgustingly horrible position to back.
Congratulations Governor elect Inslee! So glad to see that he won and not McKenna! Enough of the right wing teabaggers already! The republicans have come to represent hate and obstruction and that's not what this country needs! Yea Democrats!
I see a pattern here.....I see that people have wised up...more people to follow.....that the Republican Party is a party of the few dooping the many...the Have and the Have More's...(according to "DUBYA"!) feeling that using religion as a tool of control while instilling anger. Yup...go ahead Chuckie Norris....swing away Teddy "I messed my Pants" Nuggent....go ahead and swirl your base to revolution. In the end...you'll lose that one too.
Where's Elliot? Where's Ticked Off In Ohio? Where all these Republicans who were guaranteeing us a Republican sweep last Tuesday
Charlie 1915998, they have gone back under their bridges to ambush the next unwary travellers to pass by with their troll attacks (apols to the REAL troll in the story of the 3 Billy Goats Gruff who was actually just a middle class guy trying to eke out a living after having his job eliminated by Bain Capital, NOT right wing tools trying to clog up the internet with their droppings!!)
I will have to say that Obama ran a better campaign and I really hope that things will change for the better. I personally don't think it will be but I hope I am wrong. With all the fighting back and forth on here I wonder if after 4 more years that everyone wanted we end up with an additional 4 trillion dollars in debt to the already 16 trillion and we look more like Europe and have less freedom than what we have now what will everyone be saying then about the choice they made including the ones for the state levels.
I do hope I will be wrong but time will tell.
I keep hearing about this loss of freedom Gordon, but exactly what loss of freedoms have we lost? Yes the Patriot Act, (from Bush, Obama extended it) curtailed some rights, but didn't remove them. In fact, not one freedom has been removed, some may have been curtailed, and some new laws made that goes after terrorists, foreign and domestic. I don't see that as any losses.
Sally,
When a liberty is curtailed, it has been taken away, but thankfully Romney/Ryan did not win and take away our right to privacy within the confines of our bedrooms, or a women's liberty to make her own health care decisions.
On the other hand, the'Patriot act' in itself is the most invasive law ever upon a persons right to privacy, no matter what the intentions were..........either issue warrents upon probable cause, or throw it out
Sally Ann,
You write: Yes the Patriot Act, (from Bush, Obama extended it) curtailed some rights, but didn't remove them. In fact, not one freedom has been removed, some may have been curtailed, and some new laws made that goes after terrorists, foreign and domestic. I don't see that as any losses. Sal, although I, like you probably, voted for Obama, but you couldn't be more wrong. In 1215, the Magna Carta was signed. This seminal declaration of human rights announced that those arrested are entitled to come before a court and argue that their confinement is not based on a valid basis. In more modern times, it's called the right of habeas corpus. It's enshrined in the Constitution for everyone, whether citizen or non-citizen. The NDAA, the newer version, permits the President to order that American citizens be kidnapped at any time and held incommunicado in confinement here or anywhere else in the world without access to a lawyer or the courts. That's not just a curtailment, that's a radical departure from over 900 years of Anglo-Saxon legal tradition, from which our system derives. It's all justified on the ground that, in wartime, constitutional rights may be suspended. Because the war on terror is never-ending, it affords Obama and future Presidents free reign to kidnap and confine dissidents forever and not merely for the duration of real wars. The Patriot Act and its child, the NDAA, It's a substantial departure from the rule of law and civil rights enjoyed for centuries.
Your "it's-only-a-curtailment-of-rights-and-not-a-substantial loss" statement is poorly informed.

It's a good thing people don't believe like Patrick Henry! (Give me liberty or give me death)
Else, the government would go broke disposing of all the suicides.
The only place where the Repukes continue to win is in the deep south. In Tennessee, for example, the State House and Senate have a filibuster proof majority now. Further, they reelected a scumbag Federal GOP Teabaggin Senator (DOCTOR Scott Desjarlis) who was having extramarital affairs, and who was RECORDED (he actually did it himself) telling one of the women to have an abortion. Nevertheless, he was reelected in a landslide. Why do you think that is?
I say, don't wait for these deep southern redneck-bigot States to leave the union. Kick em the hell out. Let them have at it on their own. Let them see how quick they join the 3rd world with their ridiculously poor educations, and inability to come to rational compromise and conclusions. They will be BEGGING for Obamacare within 5 years.
Glad a republican did not win, but Jay Inslee, come on, it does not get any further left wing extreme.
Insllee was elected to the US House representing a district in eastern Washington state in the early 1980s, but was voted out of office after just one term. So he moved back to Seattle where he grew up, and ran for a US House seat again, where he won.....and became a career politician
I bumped heads with Inslee over property rights in the early 1990s. Inslee was opposed to the state having to pay property owners just compensation for the taking, or devaluation of their property for projects deemed necessary by the state. In a Town hall meeting Inslee argued it would cost taxpayers 9 billion dollars if the state had to pay for all the land it had taken from property owners, as if property owners were someone other than taxpayers...Firstly, property owners are the largest group of taxpayers in the state of Washington, anyone who owns a home is a property owner. Secondly, state and federal real estate law mandates government must pay a land owner fair market compensation when land is taken or devalued by government actions.
Sadly, the law which allows the state government to enact laws which renders private property useless is still in place today in Washington state ...........If there ever was one I would label a true communist, it is Jay Inslee...........I myself am a moderate independent who voted for another moderate, Obama.
Horrible news for us small businessmen in Washington. Inslee is a business nightmare and will continue the trend of shoving business and jobs out of the state. He is another political hack who has never had a real job.
Even his predecessor - Gregoire, perhaps the most corrupt politician I've encountered - was closer to the middle than Inslee.
Sounds like there's gonna be some serious pipe puffing in Washington.
Now at least we don't have to worry about , more tax cuts for the Rich and Big Business
Or Women Rights, or Health Care
Rob Mckenna showed his colors when he went against Health Care here in Washington , when the people did not want to drop AHC Act , Did not want to sign on to the other States going against the AHC ACT
He's a Republican with the Republicans platform plain and simple
Let me know when Washington sales tax hits 10%.
onermailliw, when that happens, I'll sure be moving away from this beautiful state. But I don't think that will happen, as more elections occur, the R's will even out with the D's in the House or Senate. The D's need to wake up that spending has to be cut. Raising taxes is not the answer, people can't afford more taxes.
Why the D's can't understand that, I don't know.
Yes, Washington has a 9. something (depending on the juristiction) sales tax, but remember we have NO state income tax, not even on the extremely wealthy (Who BTW in 2010 supported just such a thing)
@EMDF9A, Yes, the extremely wealthy did support such a thing, but the average taxpayer, both the R's, the D's and the I's. plus others saw through that little ploy. The D's were behind that, and got their butts handed to them. They hate the fact the Tim Eyeman keeps the legislative branch honest with the 2/3 majority to pass new taxes.
Our beautiful state does have problems, but not as many as other states have. Further north is all D's, here in SW WA, Clark County is mainly R's, with scattered strongholds of D's. Now if we could only get them all on the same page, something things could get done.
Overmailo, WA doesn't have an income tax. What state you in? Oregon has no sales tax but a 9% income tax and higher property taxes so the hot setup is to live in WA and Shop in Oregon. Most states have both income and sales taxes so they pay way more than WA people.
File this under shocking elections of the century. Washington, a state full of brain dead Obamatrons, goes for another dem to lead that state further into decline.
Boo Hoo Obama Lies. You need to get over the fact you and your party LOST. Quit complaining, name calling, etc and start working with everyone to get our state back on track. Do you have the balls to do that, or are you just going to continue to be a sore loser?
Oh, by the way just what state has a stronger economy, and leads in technology, than any other. You ever heard of Boeing and Microsoft? California likes that business model to, oh yeah, thats right its a Blue State as well. You lost you failed get over it and join us Americans as we battle the world and lead the way in our economic revovery.
The truly amazing part is that you don't realize that rantings like yours are a big reason the President won re-election. People are so tired of smarm like yours that it puts you behind in elections before the campaigning even starts. The more you fight the rope, the tighter it gets around your neck- and you just can't stop, can you?.
In a 2011 House hearing, Inslee said Republicans have "an allergy to science and scientists," -wikipedia
Yesss, I will vote for this guy every time. The only "trons" are the Fauxtrons that are in shock over losing to "that" guy. They bought into what they were selling until they all believed it was true!
