Turnout down from 2008? Too soon to tell

Brendan Smialowski / AFP - Getty Images

Voters use touch screen voting booths to participate in electronic voting during the first day of early voting October 22, 2012 in Washinton, DC.

Leading Republican pollster Bill McInturff is cautioning analysts to not jump to the conclusion that voter turnout in Tuesday’s election was down from 2008.

As of Thursday about 119.4 million votes had been counted in the presidential election – compared to a total vote in the 2008 presidential election of 131 million.

But not all the votes cast in the 2012 election have been counted yet, McInturff said on Friday.

He pointed out that two days after the 2008 election, nearly 10 million votes hadn’t yet been counted. To put that in perspective, a total of nearly 8.4 million votes were cast in Florida that year.

Among those votes still to be tallied from Tuesday’s election are absentee ballots and provisional ballots cast, for example, by voters who went to the wrong precinct. (Some of those provisional votes may ultimately be invalidated and would not be counted, however).

“Turnout as a percent of citizens-of-voting-age population will be down this cycle, but, there’s still a chance the total vote cast will be as large or slightly larger than in 2008,” McInturff said.

The pollster also said that 42 percent of the drop in voter turnout on Tuesday is coming from three states hit hard by Hurricane Sandy last week: Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. All three are predominantly Democratic states which President Barack Obama easily carried both in 2008 and on Tuesday.

Voter turnout was up from 2008 levels in eight battleground states. For example, turnout was up by more than 8 percent in Colorado, which Obama won, and by 5.5 percent in North Carolina, which Republican candidate Mitt Romney carried.

of Mitt the Millionaire..

Mitt failed to take his home town of Belmont.

Mitt failed to take his home state of Massachusetts.

Mitt failed to take his summer home state of NH

Mitt failed to take his father's state of Michigan

Mitt failed to take his other home state of California

Funny how the more you know him the less likely you were to vote for him.

I'm very interested in this. I hope they break it down and can tell us what the turnout was by party and region.

When Romney was campaigning for the GOP nomination I speculated that the fact he is Mormon would keep Southern Evangelicals away from the polls. Now, don't get in a snit but it's a well-known fact that the Baptists and evangelical protestants do not regard the LDS church as a branch of the Christian faith and some go so far as to regard it as a 'heresy'.

So, I'm curious what the final tally will show us. I suspect overall voter apathy will be the number one reason. But it would be interesting to see if Southern Evangelicals could have played a larger role in Romney's defeat.

Maybe if the repubs hadn't tried the voter suppression thingy the turnout would have been even more remarkable in the eight battleground states were up from 2008 levels.

GT - IF you're some of the Rwing Kool-aid drinkers, they've been tasting a brew lately that has been telling them that there was LESS turnout than 2008, ergo LESS people voted for O than the last time, hence 'he didn't get a mandate from the majority of the public'. ANY excuse still, eh?

There were a few idiots on the boards earlier this morning making that so-called 'point' - even on articles that had NOTHING to do with the election or politics.

They'll be here shortly, saying the same thing. Really - instead of pestering people on these boards, they should GO BACK AND COMPLAIN TO THEIR OWN PARTY INSTEAD OF POST THEIR NON-SENSE HERE. Honestly, I'm sick of it already...

Hahaha, good-un.

I know we shouldn't spike the football, but it's hard not to when the rightwingers are so busy with lies, hypocrisy, and anger (AKA Bullsh!t Mountain) about the election now -- and "times that are a changing" going forward. Instead of admitting to a shellacking the way the president did in 2010, look at McConnell/Boehner and their rightwing supporters acting like they won the election.

The president not only won the electoral college, but also the popular vote by a comfortable margin (with more votes coming in for him). The Dems picked up seats in the Senate and the House. The Dems would have a majority in the House if not for gerrymandering in states like Pennsylvania. President Obama has far more of a mandate and capital to spend than Dubya ever had. No, Republicans don't get to dictate or control the agenda!

To the rightwing: Day 1 -- Join the rest of the world and stop talking only to one another. Get rid of Rush, FAUX Noise, and websites disconnected from the real world. This is, and will be your primary problem in adjusting to the future.

I forgot -- The Dems also made gains at the state level from governors to state legislators to propositions.

And all this despite voter suppression, gerrymandering, dark money, and general clusterf@#ks in Florida and Arizona. Not to mention thousands of votes President Obama lost due to Hurricane Sandy.

States like Indiana, North Carolina, etc. will be joined by Texas, Arizona in turning purple...

More transcript excerpts from The Rachel Maddow Show:

MADDOW: Ohio really did go to President Obama last night. And he
really did win. And he really was born in Hawaii. And he really is
legitimately president of the United States, again.

And the Bureau of Labor Statistics did not make up a fake unemployment
rate last month. And the Congressional Research Service really can find no
evidence that cutting taxes on rich people grows the economy. And the
polls were not skewed to oversample Democrats. And Nate Silver was not
making up fake projections about the election to make conservatives feel
bad. Nate Silver was doing math.

And climate change is real. And rape really does cause pregnancy
sometimes. And evolution is a thing.

And Benghazi was an attack on us, it was not a scandal by us. And
nobody is taking away anyone`s guns. And taxes have not gone up. And the
deficit is dropping, actually.

And Saddam Hussein did not have weapons of mass destruction. And the
moon landing was real. And FEMA is not building concentration camps. And
U.N. election observers are not taking over Texas. And moderate reforms of
the regulations on the insurance industry and the financial services
industry in this country are not the same thing as communism.

Paraphrasing a bumper sticker, the Democrats may not be perfect, but the Republicans are nuts.

Sure the turnout is down but you must take into account that people in southern states that were no contest for Obama so voters on both sides probably felt that their vote would not help or was not need since Romney was winning their state by a wide margin. The same can be said about states like NY and NJ that was hit by the storm where voters either felt they had more important thing to attend to since polls showed the state was so one sided for Obama that they chose to stay home and take care of business.

There was also the vote suppression by the Republicans that had people standing in line for up to 8 hours to vote. You can't tell me that some people got tired and left without voting.

Tuesday night's Democratic victories are a canary in a Republican coal mine.

They are a harbinger of election trends to come as an increasingly diverse electorate expressed its will. Populism won the day over the creeping fascism that had been steadily advancing since Reagan's time. People are tired of their wages and benefits being subordinated by avaricious CEO's. People tired of watching from the sidelines as income redistribution enriched the already wealthy and cannibalized their prosperity, their child's college funds, and our collective futures.

A self-made, fatherless, black community organizer from Chicago was picked in favor of a privileged, silver spooned, coddled, child of inherited wealth, power and entitlement whose only talent was devouring the pensions, jobs, livelihoods and aspirations of the less well-born.

Republicans, now on suicide watch are dissecting their electoral rejection and attributing it to any number of causes but the obvious: America doesn't like you.

This increasingly irrelevant party watched in astonishment as its voter suppression tactics and anti-populism focus proved a flaccid response to human tidal wave of Democratic voters swarming the polls. They are extracting the wrong lesson from the drubbing as they seek to carry themselves further right to staunch the voter loss.

Take pride America. Forward.

Now that more reliable information is coming in, it looks like white voters did not turn-out -- Neither for Romney or President Obama. So, this would indicate to me that some moderates unhappy with the economy did not vote this time for the president, but Romney was not an acceptable alternative.

The economy would have been in better shape had Teapublicans not obstructed, so I don't see this as reflecting on the president poorly. However, that these white voters did not support Romney says a lot.

Let's just make sure progressives get out the vote in this next mid-term, as we can't afford more Teapublican gerrymandering of districts such as occurred in Pennsylvania. Otherwise the Dems would have a majority in the House too right now, and The People would have gotten the movement they want from Congress.

Transcript excerpts from The Rachel Maddow:

“We are not going to have a Supreme Court that will overturn Roe versus Wade. There will be no more Antonin Scalias and Samuel Alitos added to this court.

We`re not going to repeal health reform.

Nobody is going to kill Medicare and make old people in this generation or any other generation fight it out on the open market to try to get themselves health insurance.

[BECAUSE]

We are not going to give a 20 percent tax cut to millionaires and
billionaires and expect programs like food stamps and kid`s insurance to
cover the cost of that tax cut.

We`re not going to make you clear it with your boss if you want to get birth
control under the insurance plan that you`re on.

We are not going to redefine rape.

We are not going to amend the United States Constitution to stop gay
people from getting married.

We are not going to double Guantanamo.

We are not eliminating the Department of Energy or the Department of
Education or housing at the federal level.

We are not going to spend $2 trillion on the military that the
military does not want. We are not scaling back on student loans, because
the country`s new plan is that you should borrow money from your parents.

We are not vetoing the DREAM Act. We are not self-deporting. We are
not letting Detroit go bankrupt.

We are not starting a trade war with China on Inauguration Day in
January. We are not going to have, as a president, a man who once led a
mob of friends to run down a scared, gay kid, to hold him down and forcibly
cut his hair off with a pair of scissors while that kid cried and screamed
for help and there was no apology, not ever.

We are not going to have a Secretary of State John Bolton. We are not
bringing Dick Cheney back. We are not going to have a foreign policy shop
stocked with architects of the Iraq war. We are not going to do it.

We had the chance to do that if we wanted to do that, as a country.
And we said no, last night, loudly.”

On one hand we had a spineless wimp of a guy who cares more about himself than anyone (Obama) and on the other hand we have some rich jackass who's idea of relating to the people is talking bout his wife's Mercedes (Romney). We're damned regardless of the jerk who wins so I can see that as a reason why people didn't vote.

My thoughts:

- We're too stupid to vote and it shows since people are willing to vote only democratic or republican. There's no way that either of these two horrible entities are enough to represent the needs of the people.

- Our government had a great run but it's time for a new government structure. We've successfully destroyed our current structure with evils like lobbying and political parties.

Unfortunately, while this country talks a good game, most people wouldn't know compromise if it fondled their junk and stuck its tongue in their ear.

Alex, it's called "projection" and you are right on the money. Republicans kept talking about "voter fraud", yet every case of voter fraud that we are aware of was conducted by Republicans. Also, Faux News is always talking about "media bias" and they are the most blatantly biased "news" source in the US.

Towards the end of the campaign, the Republicans started accusing Obama of using hateful attack ads during the campaign. Never mind four years of birther talk and accusing Obama of being a Moslem Marxist who was trying to overthrow the US.

I must say the best part was Karl Rove insisting on Faux News that Ohio was still in play, even when it was obviously lost. It reminded me of the Wicked Witch at the end of "Wizard of Oz" -- "I'm melting, melting, what a world! What a world!!"

"I must say the best part was Karl Rove insisting on Faux News that Ohio was still in play, even when it was obviously lost"

The right wing noise machine (entertainment industry) lied to they supporters. The polls were not stacked and Fox, Limbaugh and the rest of them knew it. Ohio was not in play nor was Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Iowa -- most of the so called "swing states' were all but impossible for Romney to win. Yet people like Karl Rove, Dick Morris, Sean Hannity and who knows how many others had their sheep convinced Romney would win in a landslide.

I see a bumper sticker every so often reading 'I don't believe the liberal media." We can debate how "liberal" the media is but what that sticker says to me is --- I DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE REALITY.

"I really wasn't aware that the republicans lived in such a delusional world"

Well -- something like 38% of registered Republicans believe that the earth is about 6,000 years old. Almost half of them believe that President Obama was born in Kenya even though Kenya didn't exist in 1961, the year he was born. A huge majority of the believe their federal income taxes have gone up in the last 4 years when in fact -- they've gone down. Something like 35% still believe we found WMD in Iraq. The list of falsehoods goes on and on.

Many Republicans get all their information from Fox and right wing talk radio. Some reasonable Republicans are beginning to call that the "right wing entertainment industry." But the bottom line is Fox, Limbaugh and the rest of them are LYING to their people and their people fall for the lies. They're telling their listeners what they WANT to hear, not what is actually happening.

Turn out had to be up. MSNBC said it was so it has to be true. Every major population center had increases in numbers of blacks reportedly voting, so every project, homeless shelter and drunk tank was emptied out and delivered to the polls. Our cities are storage centers for the lab rats the democrats need for the elections. They are fed and housed and when the bell rings they salivate and run to the polling places before heading home to their cages until next time they have a purpose in life.

Mr Obama may get his second term, but it is much more about firing someone hired under affirmative action rather than doing a good job and getting a contract extension.

Think about this sandiego1969 --- had republicans spent less time talking about birth certificates and more talking about real tax reform, do you think the election may have turned out differently? Had Republicans spent less time talking about rape and more time talking about education, do you think the election would have turned out differently? Really? In the business world there are a lot of incompetent people with jobs. If CEOs do a crappy job they get paid millions to go away.

Anyone who thinks the private sector is a model of efficiency and good judgement hasn't spent much time in the corporate world. Shows like 'The Office' and comic strips like 'Dilbert' may be satirical but they are based on real-life experiences.

The private sector gas stations could not pump gas after Sandy because they did not have gererators. They had gas but it could not be pumped. The convience store orginization rep said it would cost $10k for a generator, but they only get a penny a gallon profit. In Florida if you have a station you are required by law to have a generator. Well, if you want gas you want requlations.

This idea that the private sector is some kind of bubbling pot of effectiveness and efficiency is a myth. I'm a recently retired marketing products director form one of the huge food companies. Believe me -- BILLIONS are wasted every year. The private sector has the good old boy syndrome, the political opportunist, the back stabbers and the empire builders probably more os than the government. I saw this in the company I was with and I saw in in our competition. This lack of effectiveness and efficiency runs from the largest of the largest all the way down to your local grocery store.

So the Republicans will be licking their wounds for a very long time I suspect. However, it is frightening how they are blaming the loss on external factors (Hurricane Sandy), the actions of Governor Christie in New Jersey, and Obama himself for suppressing the Republican vote (Karl Rove). Really? This is a Party that has gone off the deep end, or as Brian Williams so eloquently stated about Donald Trump: "Donald Trump, who has driven well past the last exit to relevance and veered into something closer to irresponsible, here, is tweeting tonight.”

Memo to NBC: Cancel The Apprentice and anything else Trump is involved with at your organization. He IS as irresponsible and irrelevant as the Republican Party is becoming. BTW ... memo to Rupert Murdock: Time to clean house over at Fox News. Hannity, O'Reilly and scores of others need to go! The alternate reality they live in and espouse is inconsistent with the reality perceived by mainstream America. You KNOW they only appeal to low-information and uneducated viewers, who are easily indoctrinated into the conservative fold.

Sara Palin made fun of community organizers in the 08 electon. Implied they didn't know much and their role was inconsequential. Obama, the political organizer and his team certainly knew how to pinpoint and get out their communities of voters all across the country.

Romney, the business man and supposed numbers guy, couldn't tally the votes going Obama's way in Ohio no more than he could make the numbers work for his propose budget plan that would have cut taxes while increasing spending.

A little common sense goes a long way. Talking about numbers, glad to see that Rove and his Crossroads GPS PAC spent so much money with so little ROIu. Another good example of Republic businessman handling of the numbers.

Taking more tax money from the highest tax earners will only make the majority of them, (employers) cut back on expenses (employees) thus causing higher unemployment, lower payroll taxes because of fewer jobs, and a tax increase across the board because that plan mathematically won't payoff...Speaking as an employer I DO know what i am talking about...

Middle class consumers are the real job creators, not the rich. The "Wealthy people create jobs" concept is one myth that needs to die. If you are an employer (rich person) who is going to cut expenses (employees) because you have to pay higher taxes, and that results in your business growing and becoming more profitable, then you are a bad manager who had too many employees. Otherwise you are just throwing a suicidal tantrum. If the rich created jobs in proportion to their accumulated wealth we would be swimming in jobs right now.

I watched Fox News the other night after the election since I knew it wouldn't upset me so much. They live in a parallel universe. They were talking about the negative campaign Obama used against Romney and acted like they didn't know that someone had deemed Romneys campaign 99% negative. Plus they had to see him in the primary and listen to all the comments about him by many of their own. And what Romney did to every candidate he was up against. I think they just need to play Fox News' own comments about Romney during the primary and apply that to the general election and together they can say oh! Now I know what happened! Either they are pretending or they really don't know what Romney was like and what happened!

I think it's time the Republican party took a lesson from the Democrat's campaign and started fighting back just as dirty. It is about time Barack Obama is called exactly what he is. As the Commander in Chief he is a MURDERER, plain and simple for allowing the Ambassador and Navy Seals to be slaughtered while he turned his back on them. That makes him a true murderer. Not the pretend one they tried to pin on Mitt Romney regarding some guys wife getting cancer 7 years after he left the company. Barack Obama is a LIAR, who came out and lied to the American people for almost 2 weeks after the attack that it was all caused by some video, when he knew the truth all along. Barack Obama is a SNEAK. He is still hiding under his desk and not coming clean about the events in Benghazi. And finally, he is a COWARD. The "buck stops here" is a joke with him, because he has been trying to throw everybody else under the bus instead of standing up and being a man. Newsweek showed him as Napoleon. A perfect description. Napoleon was a LITTLE MAN too, not only in stature but in moral integrity.

Well one way is when things turn out completely different from what you were expecting. For instance, you and your kind were SO SURE that Romney was going to win in a landslide. Faux News was telling you not to believe all the mainstream news media and their polls which showed a close race, but Obama in the lead.

Well now you know that Faux News misled you. Well maybe that reality has not yet sunk in, but you should give it some thought. And if they misled you on that, maybe they've misled you on other things.

We were wondering how he would remember what he said he stood for for3-4 weeks. And the republicans would have to notice. Answer I guess that happened because they are asking where he went. That Mitt was only there for that night. I think he was the worst candidate we have had since I have been paying attention to the election. And that has been decades. And Ryan was even worse than Palin if that is possible. Romney started losing bigtime after that apptmnt and nevr really recovered.

The next big challenge will be the Republican congress trying to stonewall Obama like they did in his first four years. We all need to pressure our representatives to work towards a resolution of our budget mess.

Both sides must be willing to compromise--the whole concept of the United States is that we can work out our differences and forge a stronger union in the process. The hyper-partisan politics that we have seen the last few years is threatening our national survival. WE must pressure our representatives to make it stop.

True, but neither side should expect "compromise" to be manifested in 'surrender.' I'd suspect House GOPers to stick to the same guns that has characterized them for the past two years. They will view their retaining majority numbers as some sort of mandate, even though they lost some seats in the process. With Boehner failing to take leadership out of fear for his own political fortunes, hardliners like Ryan, Cantor, King, et al will continue to drive the train and stalemate will remain the order of the day. Since the players haven't changed, don't expect the game to change much even though the ante is now considerably higher.
