Emotional Obama sheds tears as he thanks campaign workers

In a video released by the Obama campaign, a tearful president thanks his campaign workers. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

President Barack Obama was among those who got teary eyed Wednesday during a surprise visit to his Chicago-based 2012 campaign headquarters, according to a campaign team video posted to YouTube.

"What you guys have done means that the work that I'm doing is important, and I'm really proud of that. I'm really proud of you," he said before choking up, turning his head and wiping away a tear.

The president spoke for about five minutes into a microphone while hundreds of volunteers, many of whom climbed desks to get a better vantage point, listened intently.

When the president's emotions became visible, the room erupted into applause in a unified show of support.

The commander in chief told the campaign workers he had no doubt they would go on to do "just amazing things."

"You guys are so much better than I was in so many ways," he said after recalling his move to Chicago at age 25 with a goal of public service but with little direction. "You're smarter and you're better organized and you're more effective."

Obama said that even before election returns started rolling in on Tuesday evening, the pride he felt for his team made him feel as though the work he had done in running for office had come full circle.

"Your journey is just beginning. You're just starting and whatever good we do in the next four years will pale in comparison to what you guys end up accomplishing for years and years to come," he told them.

Think Romney might? That seems about the only thing Romney can do, run and fail. Maybe the Koch suckers will give another billion or so only to see the money wasted. LOL

I sincerely hope Mr. President that you will start your second term off seeking a bipartisan approach with all members of congress. Assuming the leadership role with your first opportunity at hand by focusing on thepending tax situation loomimg before this country on January 1st. Be a leader by rising above instead of sinking below to the continued political blame and "gotcha" game that was played during much of your last administration. Real leaders strive to rise above that crap. Will you hopefully try to do the same now that you were given a secong chance?

Presidents Clinton and Reagan walked accross the isle to negotiate with great House Speakers of the opposing parties like Tip O'Neal and Newt Gingrich...will you? They achieved great things by working together. Will you?

The tax code should be totally rewritten rather than just simply patched up as has been done over the last several years. To accomplish that would take more than just a few weeks.

Working together forl all should be your mandate you were narrowly given in popular vote this past Tuesday...

You are the leader of the WHOLE United States not just simply those that elected you this past Tuesday.

When looking to add and improve jobs you should consider ALL Americans in your desicion not just the less than 15% of the work force that are in unions when saying during your last term that you wanted to add more teachers, policemen and firemen - typically union positions.

You now preside over a very divided country created by this very heated and negative campaign won by a very dangerous "the end justifies the means" attitude. You have a lot of work ahead of you to start mending these fences should you so desire. I sincerely hope that you do. Take the high road and rise above it otherwise your final legacy could be no more than sub par at best.

I wish you the best of luck...

He got a mandate. President Obama do not bend.
If congress won't work with you let the tax cuts expire.
If they think Grover is running this country it is time for them to answer to it.
Recall them, everyone who signed his pledge need to be flooded with phone calls and email. Tell Congress to work with him.

That was beautiful. President Obama could have gone back to Washington, but instead chose to have an informal moment of giving a truly heartfelt Thanks to all the volunteers that worked on his campaign by acknowledging their greatness & dedication to this country by helping him. He also pointed out how different they are than he was at that age (and this generation is remarkable & much more advanced than we were at their age). They remind him of what he wanted to achieve at that age that pushed him towards helping and caring about others, but they have taken it to a another level.

If I worked on the campaign, that right there, seeing his genuine thanks that it moved him to such emotion ranks right up there with him winning the election.

    Great job Mr. President!

Our President is a remarkable human being. Too bad the 'haters' on this board will never see it. I am so proud that Obama is our President... he is a REAL compassionate, not the fake one we got from Romney.

TO ALL YOU 'HATERS'... go away, we don't want or need you. Democrats/Progressives/Liberals love this country, you do not.

How about shed some tears for the Hurricane Sandy Victims and those lost in the Libya Disaster ,those that are part of 8 % unemployment , those still in the Wars he said we would end , etc ..No wonder he is the first President to get Reelected with Less support than His First Election .

        Reply#58 - Fri Nov 9, 2012 7:41 AM EST

Shedding those tears showed a lot of heart and even more class. People will remember this side of him more than any"pressed shirt Reagan wanna be" such as Romney. Had Romney won he would have thanked his campaign staff but not in person but rather sent out some chain letter with a signed photograph of himself that they could all put on their wall. No, Romney's not the type to show any emotion and would be more likely to leave through the service entrance never thanking each of them in person as he slipped out of the building and into a limo blaming his quick exit on the decision of the Secret Service. Once in the car he'd never look back at any of them thanking only his Mormon God for him never having to shake the hands of such a low class of peasants compared to him and Ann. Or what people of their wealth refer to as "the help"..

He is tearing up because he is laughing so hard inside he can't contain himself and he is laughing at how stupid the American people are because apparently we will believe anything. I guess you can't beat Santa Claus and he wants to make BIG BROTHER an even greater reality. I can't believe that as citizens of AMERICA we think it is alright to rob people because they are successful and give their money to people who sit on their rearends for generations and to nothing. We are becoming more and more socialist all the time. Where is our America?

Only in America can a president who inherits a deep recession and whose policies have actually made the effects of that recession worse get re-elected. Only in America can a president who wants the bureaucrats who can’t run the Post Office to micromanage the administration of every American’s health care get re-elected. Only in America can a president who kills Americans overseas who have never been charged or convicted of a crime get re-elected. And only in America can a president who borrowed and spent more than $5 trillion in fewer than four years, plans to repay none of it and promises to borrow another $5 trillion in his second term get re-elected.

            What’s going on here?

What is going on is the present-day proof of the truism observed by Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, who rarely agreed on anything in public: When the voters recognize that the public treasury has become a public trough, they will send to Washington not persons who will promote self-reliance and foster an atmosphere of prosperity, but rather those who will give away the most cash and thereby create dependency. This is an attitude that, though present in some localities in the colonial era, was created at the federal level by Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, magnified by FDR, enhanced by LBJ, and eventually joined in by all modern-day Democrats and most contemporary Republicans.

Mitt Romney is one of those Republicans. He is no opponent of federal entitlements, and he basically promised to keep them where they are. Where they are is a cost to taxpayers of about $1.7 trillion a year. Under President Obama, however, the costs have actually increased, and so have the numbers of those who now receive them. Half of the country knows this, and so it has gleefully sent Obama back to office so he can send them more federal cash taken from the other half.

It is fair to say that Obama is the least skilled and least effective American president since Jimmy Carter, but he is far more menacing. His every instinct is toward the central planning of the economy and the federal regulation of private behavior. He has no interest in protecting American government employees in harm’s way in Libya, and he never admits he has been wrong about anything. Though he took an oath to uphold the Constitution, he treats it as a mere guideline, whose grand principles intended to guarantee personal liberty and a diffusion of power can be twisted and compromised to suit his purposes. He rejects the most fundamental of American values -- that our rights come from our Creator, and not from the government. His rejection of that leads him to an expansive view of the federal government, which permits it, and thus him, to right any wrong, to regulate any behavior and to tax any event, whether authorized by the Constitution or not, and to subordinate the individual to the state at every turn.

As a practical matter, we are in for very difficult times during Obama’s second term. ObamaCare is now here to stay; so, no matter who you are or how you pay your medical bills, federal bureaucrats will direct your physicians in their treatment of you, and they will see your medical records. As well, Obama is committed to raising the debt of the federal government to $20 trillion. So, if the Republican-controlled House of Representatives goes along with this, as it did during Obama’s first term, the cost will be close to $1 trillion in interest payments every year. As well, everyone’s taxes will go up on. New Year’s Day, as the Bush-era tax cuts will expire then. The progressive vision of a populace dependent on a central government and a European-style welfare state is now at hand.

Though I argued during the campaign that this election was a Hobson’s choice between big government and bigger government, and that regrettably it addressed how much private wealth the feds should seize and redistribute and how much private behavior they should regulate, rather than whether the Constitution permits them to do so, and though I have argued that we have really one political party whose two branches mirror each other’s wishes for war and power, it is unsettling to find Obama back in the White House for another four years. That sinking feeling comes from the knowledge that he is free from the need to keep an eye on the electorate, and from the terrible thought that he may be the authoritarian we have all known and feared would visit us one day and crush our personal freedoms.

Very well written; too bad it's a CROCK of $HIT! If you want to look at our national debt, social programs and how and who created the most debt then look at it. Look at it on a chart on a graph and you will see that is grew very linearly (gradually - relitively flat) under both Republican and Democratic Administrations.

UNTILL Ronald Reagan was elected! Before Ronald Reagan not only did we have manageable debt growth we had secure jobs and a comparatively steady economy. Before Ronald Reagan we enforced the Sherman Anti-Trust Laws, enforced reasonable tarrifs to protect AmeriCAN jobs, we taxed income over $3 million dollars at over 70%, you couldn't take large sums of money out of the economy and wharehouse in a tax free account, we didn't have treaties that encouraged outsourcing jobs and unions were much stonger; those are just the high lights. Before Ronald Reagan we practice much more (this will make you cons hyperventelate) socialistic Keynsian economics and wealth was much more evenly distributed. Government was working well for everyone.

Ronald Reagan changed ALL of that with Neo-Conservative Milton Friedman econmics. The debt chart went exponential (the debt line is near 70 degrees - near vertical), jobs and priviate retierment programs were much more secure we had regular but mild recessions but nothing like these last two and we had a strong middle class the was the backbone of this Nation.

During Bill Clinton's administration he fought back and the debt graph flatened out a bit still terribel but a little better. Then we elected Bush Jr. and the Debt line went nearly vertical culminating in an economic free-fall.

Barack Obama was elected, and I know you hate to hear this but, with a steady hand kept us from bottoming out into a full blown DEPRESSION. Now not all of that is to his credit because what the Federal Reserve (which needs to be abolished, btw) learned or thought they learned from the GREAT DEPRESSION was that if they had injected more (borrowed) money into the economy it might not have spiraled downward the way it did and wouldn't have lasted so long.

So the debt you are blaming The President for is really Federal Reserve Debt. Because EVERY dollar the Fed "CREATES" is created as debt (Most people don't know that just as they don't know that the Fed is as "FEDERAL" as FedEx.). Had the President and Congress not gone along with the Fed we would probably be in the throws of a second Great Depression now.

There is no Doubt that we are coming to a fiscal cliff ... AGAIN. And with a gun to their head, a gun that's been created from over 30 years of irresponisble NeoConOmics, they will have to raise the debt ceiling ... AGAIN.

So what is needed isn't more unbrideled NeoConism, which is what you Republicans think you want and DEFINATELY what Myth RomMany would have given us. We need to reverse Reagan trickle down, unregulated, job destroying, middle class deminishing, Milton Friedman VooDoo economics before the economy does fall into a Depression that will make the first one look like a picnic.
