UPDATED 3:22 a.m. ET - Twitter records fell. The New York Times released a sneak peek at its Wednesday front page. Ohio remained a battleground. Captain America saluted. And somehow, the Obama girls grew up.

Here's a look at the social media reaction to President Barack Obama's re-election victory and former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney's defeat.

Willard won't concede until all the law suits are filed and decided, that's the Republican way. Next, he will blame hurricane Sandy and Chris Cristie for his loss, its the Republican way to have an unfounded excuse ready. Republicans will whine and proclaim that the Congress will not work with Dems or Obama, its politics as usual. In 2016, Hillary Clinton will be elected President but the Congress will swing Democrat in 2014... watch the heck out you neo-cons and Republican traitors!

As of right now it's been some 45 or so minutes since Obama was declared the winner, and Romney still refuses to concede defeat. Even if all the remaining states that aren't as yet "characterized" go to him, he can't possibly win.

C'mon Mitt, be a man. You lost. Admit it and get it over with.

Dianefromlaconia

I honestly doubt you'd recognize true freedom if it snuck up behind you and bit you on the butt.

The President didn't create this division. It was created on his second day in office when Mitch McConnell stood in front of a dozen microphones and stated, "Our number one goal is to make Obama a one-term President."

It's time you stopped blaming Obama for the shortcomings and failures of the Republican party, and started finding ways we can come together as one country again. The ball is in your court - don't drop it this time.

Perhaps we can do better going forward. Perhaps the republicans will decide it is better to work with the President for the betterment of the country and not repeat the last four years of obstructing for no reason other then to hurt the President. Is it reasonable to think the Republicans will do this? No, sadly, it isn't. I think we can expect the next four years to continue to show moderate growth and improvement in our country in spite of the Republicans efforts to stop it. Republicans who support this agenda cannot call themselves true Americans.

Right now the hurdle will be to get Mitt to concede. Having gotten to know him during this campaign I believe he will continue to fight tooth and nail rather then accept that he has lost. He cares nothing for the good of the country, he will not let go of his desire to be crowned king. Don't wait up for his concession speech tonight.

We have voted to end hatred and division. We have voted for continuing commitment. We have voted for compassion and the middle class. We have voted for women's rights, and for the diverse country we are.

Now let's come together and work for the benefit of our entire nation and all its people. We welcome Republicans and need them to help us all unite and heal. Let's move forward!

Stands for.all you know is what the scare tactics from the left party's or other's agenda want you to know, and lets face it,the Dem/socialist party views are held by most of the media, and the Right/conservative views the airwaves on A few AM stations so there irs allot of people not being heard and this president does not care about anyone who doesnt agree with him,and I cannot support a man who associates with our enemy's and spends our money like water,he has no clue,.... he is a Party planner,...as well as many feel they are not represented or heard, and we pay the most for all those who sit on there ass or go to school for free because they were not born here, when I have to work my butt off to send my kids to community collage, and bring home less every year or have no job at all,Im moving to a place where people belive in America and the same values, that life is what you do and make of it,not what you can make a richer man give to you,I can do it myself, thank you,and if my friend or neighbor needs a helping hand,I will give that hand.

Hey Brent. Do you NOT know what "mid-term" election means? That would mean the election in the middle of Obamas term. That means 2014.

Thanks for the 2016 endorsement tho. It will be Clinton/Castro in 2016. Julian Castro, the Mayor of San Antonio Texas will be up to the job by then, and Hillary will be well rested after her term ends as Secretary of State. She is taking 2 years off to get ready for the 2016 season. (I hope)

How can that be a 'Victory Photo?'

Are people today this clueless? It was 1125pm EASTERN time and 1025PM in Chicago when the networks called it.

Folks, it was DARK OUTSIDE. This photo shows daytime and clouds.

Do you really think this is a photo of them embracing after the victory or was it some photo taken when ever- years ago maybe.

We are so ignorant of things like daylight that we can believe that this a photo taken after the victory was declared? Geeze you folks are just so ignorant.

Davsie. The Exit polls showed that 68% of the people said this mess we are in was caused by Bush. They did not blame Obama for it. The President was left with this mess and Romney said he should have fixed the mess by now. took 8 years of Rep control to make this mess but The President was to fix it in 4, with a do nothing congress. For all the Rep money, the President still won. That shows you for the first time that money can't buy this election and can't buy this Country.

Well, the Tea Party took a lickin' tonight. Republicans gave up the Senate because of it. Time will tell, but don't be suprised if the House gets reined in. Not right away, but it won't take long. The Tea Party will try to block a deal on the fiscal cliff and Boehner will be forced to crack down. They will eat their own if necessary to survive.

If Republicans don't change, they will go extinct and never see the inside of the White House for many years to come. The nations demographics are becoming more favorable to Democrats. Traditional conservatives know this. Lets see how long it takes to get the Tea Party in line.

The real problem that our President faces is the likes of Mitch McConnell. Perhaps the Reps. need to select another senate leader -- perhaps Lindsey Graham. McConnell is a dinosaur that does not put country first. Second the Rep. party has to stop bowing to the likes of Grover Norquist. Grover has led them down a perilous path.

Its been going this way for at least that long. Every President or candidate for, at least, the last 20 years has run on bringing us together so please name one GOP candidate or President that did it? Good luck with that.

With that said we all need to stop this "my side is right your side is wrong," "My side is smart and your side is drinking the kool aid" mentality. Both sides have some good idea and some bad, neither has a lock on intelligence or has all the answers.

This is not about anything other then the Koch brothers can't stand the fact that a 1/2 black man is the President and not a white man. That is the single biggest problem. Nothing else matters. Diane, JOHN, gordon: Look at your written words. What do they say? Are they uniting words, or dividing words? It's obvious to anyone they are not words of love for your country; anyone that loves this country wants it to succeed, not be torn apart or divided. Is the concept of "The United States of America" for some reason lost on you?

I never ever thought I would say this, having encountered it in its original form decades ago from people probably much like yourselves, people that saw change, and were scared to death of anything that might move our beloved country forward in peace, growth, and civilization. The words I heard those many years ago were: "America--Love it or leave it". I offer them now to you.

            "Dianefromlaconia

Obama was sooo good at dividing this country and we not be brought back together!"

And you're a perfect example of why not? Did GB bring us together? Obviously not so why should anyone believe MR would have? We were divided before Obama and will be after because people like you can't let go and realize that the "other side" is just as good and just as smart and learn to work together for EVERYONE instead of your elitism.

Remember "DIVIDED WE FALL!!" and no president can change that it has to come from US the people and we have to tell our representatives to do the same!

America has degenerated to a land of idiots.

We can only hope now for four more years of suffering.

            Investors will hole up again.

Small businesses will have to close up shop.

And the ones of you who voted for the idiot can live off of the government for at long as it lasts.

And at the rate we are going, that will not be long.

hope the obama phones paid off

Still the same old lies! Are Republicans incapable of the truth?

... “Obama Phones” are actually a creation of their beloved Ronald Reagan, who began the program in 1984.

Actually called the “Lifeline program,” the legislation permits some households to receive a free landline under Congress’s rationale that "telephone service provides a vital link to emergency services, government services and surrounding communities."

So now everyone is crying about "another government program run amok". But why? What caused the huge increase in Lifeline phones?

After Hurricane Katrina, the FCC handed out free cell phones and 300 minutes with money from the Universal Service Fund to people who'd been displaced by the storm.

I think these are more properly called "Bush phones"!

Well, first of all, your 100k is not likely to bother the total market one little bit.

Secondly, what do you think your IRA will do with the money? You don't think any of that will end up invested in the stock market? Or are you going to manage it all yourself? If you do, where do you think the best returns are? Yeah, cut your own throat and keep all that money out of the stock market!

            Hahahahaha!

I am SO sick of hearing that everyone is, or wants to, live off the government if we don't follow your way of thinking, its total BS. I voted for Obama and have NEVER taken a dime from the Government and never intend to. The sad part is your people don't even realize many of those programs you complain about were actually put in place by the GOP and the reason more are on them today are a direct results of the GOP's policies under GB. Instead you now use them to attack the other side and you'd just as soon throw the less fortunate to the streets now while pretending it all happened because of Obama. Its ridiculous.

It so sad you people actually think it all started on Obama's watch, you must have a really short memory or simply believe all the propaganda the GOP feeds you.

Where you see doom and gloom I see hope and glimpses of a country that is moving forward and in the right direction. Americans have soundly rejected Romney and everything he stands for and for good reason. He represents the past. Obama represents the future, and the future is looking a lot brighter. As for your comments on Maryland leading the country to hell, I'm assuming you're referring to the state being the first to vote for same-sex marriage. I live in Maryland and I couldn't be prouder.

Congratulations. Welcome to more of the same.

We'll be spinning our wheels for at least the next 2 years as Emperor O continues to try and force his mandate-less agenda down the throats of 50% of the country.

There can be no compromise with such a polarizing and arrogant President, and the seeds of distrust he has sown during the past 4 years are no longer able to be removed.

YOUR REVENGE WILL COME BACK TO HAUNT US ALL!

Actually he only needs to force it down 48% of America, since he won by 52%. That's the way our nation is supposed to work, not by one third of our legislative body stopping the other two thirds from fulfilling the wishes of the voting majority. You could call that the national filibuster, one third of elected officials are preventing the majority from doing their jobs.

We can move past the politics, sure--once the Repubs meet the President halfway. The President's always had an olive branch out, and you Repubs always rejected it. Will you do so again? Personally, I favor going right over that fiscal cliff if the Repubs refuse, then blame them for it.

Were going over the cliff because O can't stop spending and no matter what his plan sucks and will kill us,but of course you have the convenient slip of hand to blame the right already. . . Knowing the leader you picked is so incompetent that unless the Republicans do whatever he says we're screwed and its the republicans fault if it doesnt work and if it did then we would get no credit, that's why they are there,to make sure he doesn't kill America and if they don't vote with him it's probley a bad Idea like most of his ideas are.He just has nothing to add that will work,I wish we could all devide you guys take a section of America and we will the rest, and then we will cash you out when you lose everything because you tax the hand that feeds, and then we can just start over.

A very sad day - it's apparent the tide has truly turned. Our decline as a nation is speeding up. I guess it was worth Obama sacrificing the people in Libya for this result - I can't imagine how those families feel.

We are a nation that would rather watch the Kardashians than programs of substance. We'd rather eat McDonalds than get nutrition, and we'd rather have a celebrity at the head table than a successful individual who has a proven record of accomplishment. And the Obama supporters really believe they are independent thinkers . . . . very sad.

I hear you, but unfortunately most of the people here do not! If they do not know this about ob then I am quiet sure they do not truly know what is going on in this country. When you have a President that will not face the American Flag or say the Pledge of Allegiance, then we have a problem! One of the most gifted and genius minds was quoted as saying, "ob is not out for the people or freedom, but complete control of the government. " Now if you do not know socialism when it hits you in the face, I'm guessing you really are not that educated on matters of the government, or who is voting on what throughout the year/years! That is scary! You should be worried as hell not out partying! I'm upset when their are people in certain states out with school busses in neighborhoods with bullhorns telling them to come on get in and vote or loss and kiss white ass! Yes this was on a major news network, in a black and Hispanic neighborhood. You want to spout divided! I'm wondering who is calling the kettle black here. I'm worried, I'm scared, because this man is just plain evil. He will stop at nothing in the coming years to get what he wants, not what we need. And you people can only sit at your keyboards bashing republicans, instead of addressing real issues! We have had several signs of a wake up call and most of you have seemed to missed it. And your the ones who vote. Now that's scary! If their is a United States of America that our forefathers built, I know mine did, it will be gone. What land do you guys live in or what world? You haters can hit me all you want, it won't change a darned thing. This country is already going to ruin, and I feel so sorry for my grandchildren it's unreal. Soon we will have to burn our bibles. They will be offensive to most. Because it condemns promiscuity and gayness or whatever it's called. We have lost the morals of this country. And it all started with Ray vs Roe, I believe. My head is not thinking very good right now. I'm just in too much shock at the absolute crap I have been reading. So, I quit and am leaving.

stormyskies4, you are so correct. Our country is on the road to complete socialism and the downfall of America. The morals of our nation have gone to pot and no one cares about our God of our founding fathers. I, too, fear for my granchildrens' future. Won't be long when American will have chaos and rioting in our streets as well, just like Greese and other nations. I have been blessed living in the 50's when we lived according to the Ten Commandents and did not fear our neighbors or others. Oh, how horrible our people and nation have become. You cannot trust anyone anymore; leaders, government, teachers, doctors, ministers, etc. Come, Lord Jesus!!!!!
