Voters back Obama despite economic concerns, exit polls show

NBC's Chuck Todd discusses how Florida may be used as a model for the rest of the country to show how changes in demographics, particular an influx of Hispanic voters in key counties, affected the outcome of the election.

Updated at 12:26 a.m. ET: President Barack Obama won re-election despite an electorate that sees a nation on the wrong track, with a weak and troubling economy, according to NBC projections and exit polls. Exit poll interviews with voters point to three big reasons for Obama’s victory:

  • First, despite a slim majority of voters thinking the country is on the wrong track, 54 percent approve of the way Obama is doing his job, and the electorate was almost exactly split on whether Obama or Romney would be better at handling the economy.
  • Among the four voters in 10 who said they think economic conditions in the country are getting better, a huge majority, nearly nine out of ten, said they voted for Obama.
  • Finally, a slight majority of voters voiced an unfavorable view of Romney personally, while a slight majority had a favorable view of Obama. On the attribute of whether the president or his GOP rival was “a candidate who cares about people like me” Obama had a massive lead over Romney.

Voters were sharply divided along lines of sex, ethnicity, age, income and religion, exit polls showed.

NBC's Tamron Hall breaks down the results of the NBC News national exit poll, which shows a gender gap that worked in President Obama's favor as well as a boost from the Latino community, from which he received more votes than four years ago.

The gender gap was distinct: Among male voters, 52 percent favored Romney, while 45 percent backed Obama. The data reflected slipping support for Obama, who won 49 percent of male voters four years ago. (Full exit polling data is available here.

Among white male voters the disparity was even sharper: Obama was winning just 36 percent of the white male vote Tuesday, compared with the 41 percent he won in 2008, the exit polls showed.

Women voters favored Obama 55 percent to 43 percent – about the same split as four years ago when 56 percent of women voters preferred Obama and 43 percent supported Republican candidate Sen. John McCain.

Within the female vote there was a sharp divide between married and unmarried women: Married women backed Romney, 53 percent to 46 percent, while unmarried women preferred Obama by a better than 2-to-1 ratio, 68 percent to 30 percent.

Virginia Senator-elect Tim Kaine weighs in on what made the difference for him and the president in his state, how Obama plans to work with the GOP and why it may be a more cooperative relationship in this second term.

Among white voters -– who accounted for nearly three quarters of the electorate -- Romney was leading Obama by 58 to 40 percent, making Romney’s performance among white voters three points better than McCain’s in 2008.

Younger voters preferred Obama, but not by as lopsided a margin as in 2008: Among voters age 18 to 29 Tuesday, three out of five said they voted for Obama, compared with about two of three in 2008.

On the other hand, Romney had a substantial advantage among voters 65 and older, who favored the Republican by a margin of 11 points.

Supporters of President Barack Obama cheer as they wait for Obama to appear on stage during the Obama Election Night watch party at McCormick Place Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Chicago, Ill.

Latinos and blacks overwhelmingly voted for Obama, according to the exit polls. Latinos, an important part of Obama’s winning coalition in 2008, were even stronger in their support of Obama than they were four years ago. Latinos, who accounted for about a tenth of the national electorate, favored Obama by about 70-30. Black voters continued to be exceptionally loyal to Obama – he was getting more than nine in 10 of their votes Tuesday night, just as he did four years ago.

Obama showed strength among lower-income voters, winning three out of five voters with family incomes below $50,000. Among middle-income voters Romney led 52 percent to 46 percent, and he did a bit better than that among voters with family incomes of $100,000 over more.

Another dividing line in the electorate, as in 2008, was religion. Three out of five voters who told exit poll interviewers they attended religious services weekly or more often preferred Romney, while 40 percent backed Obama. This represented about a five point improvement among such voters for Romney over McCain’s performance four years ago.

Among those who said they never attend religious services (a much smaller portion of the electorate) Obama won more than three of five.

A slim majority of voters Tuesday told exit poll interviewers that they felt the country was “off on the wrong track,” but the mood of the electorate was markedly more optimistic than it was four years ago when a record three out of four voters said the country was on the wrong track.

An overwhelming 76 percent of voters said the state of the economy is poor, or “not so good,” but voters did not tend to blame Obama, who came into office in the midst of a financial crisis and deep recession. Only 38 percent said Obama was “more to blame for the current economic conditions,” compared with 53 percent who laid the blame more on former President George W. Bush.

The House is our next big change to make. We need to vote every GOP incumbent out of office if they continue to obstruct the country moving out of this mess!

House Republicans MUST be the defending force of people who still have some senses about what this country is about to become and resist ALL Obama attempts to redistribute wealth. Those who want free medical insurance think again: the quality of average medical treatment will go down for the whole nation. This is not a small country in Europe. It's a large country with lots of immigrants and pretty much open border.

@sue, You said,

"Those people who want free medical insurance think again." I disagree and here's why... Our healthcare system has been out of control and broken for 20 years. Obama has tried to fix it, help it, improve it and reduce costs. The GOP has done NOTHING to do anything to help. The healthcare system was charging me 1200 dollars a month for coverage. I make 1800 dollars a month. Do you see anything wrong with this picture? You are so out of touch with the real world....

I couldn't agree more Max. Obamacare is far from perfect...a one-payer system would have been much better but it was blocked by the right wing nuts so Obama compromised....you know...that thing that shall not be considered by the right wing nuts.

    Max, you beg the question.

You're assuming that the House Republicans are obstructing beneficial legislation.

It is just as reasonable to believe that they are preventing the Democrats from passing more legislation that would further harm the American economy.

    Max:

You took half of what Sue said out of context, and then answered a question she didn't ask. You sound like Obama himself.

Sue said: "Those who want free medical insurance think again: the quality of average medical treatment will go down for the whole nation. This is not a small country in Europe."

You responded with: "Our healthcare system has been out of control and broken for 20 years. Obama has tried to fix it, help it, improve it and reduce costs." Please explain how your asinine response addresses Sue's argument that free medical insurance for the people of America, will cause the quality of treatment to decline, because the population of the United States is greater then the European countries that have adapted socialized medicine. Why will it decline? Because there aren’t enough doctors and medical facilities to accommodate the large the population of the United States.

BTW: The American healthcare system has not “been out of control and broken for 20 years.” That’s Liberal/Democrat election propaganda that you were duped into believing. How does it feel to be a dupe?

During the election of 2008, there was no public outcry to revamp the American medical care system. There was; however, a call to restructure the way that Medicare paid for the prescriptions for the disabled and the elderly. Obama took this concept and went haywire with it. He did something that the public never asked for, because he was determined to impose socialized medicine on the American people. So now, with this in mind; please explain to the readers how socialized medicine will be cheaper and improved over-all?

THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH. Somebody has to pay for it. Doctors and hospitals aren’t going to work for free. Pharmaceutical companies aren’t going to distribute drugs for free. WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM TO PAY FOR OBAMACARE?

I live in Longport, NJ which is on a barrier island between Sea Isle (where Sandy made landfall) and Atlantic City. My basement flooded with 7 feet of water. I lost electricity, heater, hot water, freezer and washer/dryer. I have a backup generator which supplied power to the refrigerator, sump pump, a couple of lights and a radio. My only connection to the outside world was the radio and my cell phone which only worked about 10% of the time. The first responders, government agencies and non-government organization were fantastic. Every one of my elected officials the Republican Mayor and Councilmen, the Democrat county Freeholders and Sheriff, the Republican Governor and the Democrat President all did a great job and worked together seamlessly. Their party didn't matter; their only concern was the people. In the past week my community has gone from complete devastation to business as usual. Yes, there is still a lot of work to be done but the worst of it is over. The government helped the people not with a hand out but a hand up. It really made me proud to be an American.

On the radio last week I heard that Rush Limbaugh and Fox News criticized Governor Christie for complimenting President Obama on the job he had done. How dare they. They were so intent on destroying Obama that they would jeopardize the life and well-being of my family, friends and neighbors just to see Obama fail. After this past week, it is so clear how much this country can achieve when we work together. Now that "we the people" have chosen Obama as the President can we please turn off the Rush Limbaughs and Fox News that always put party before country. Can we silence the divisive Tea Party whose motto seems to be "my way or the highway". This great country can accomplish anything if we work together. This past week is proof of it.

Give me a break. Work together???....YOUR socialist pres Obama is by far the worst at "reaching across the aisle" in history. He is a pompous, self-righteous turd who thinks he is the smartest guy in the room (news flash, he's NOT). He is without a doubt the king of my way or the highway. I will support anyone who opposes Obama on anything from this point forward. Our nations future is now at stake.

Tex - that is exactly why our economy hasn't grown as strongly as it needs to. The real Republicans have to shut the the Tea partiers down. Most Americans whether conservative or liberal want bipartisanship. There is common ground that we can find to move this country forward. But this petty bickering must end first.

        Michael:

I'm sorry to hear that you suffered so badly from the storm, however, I'm glade to hear that things are coming together for you.

        Two questions:

First: Why are you listening to Rush Limbaugh and Fox News personalities if you feel that they are so politically inflammatory?

Second: Are you aware that it is the business of these two venues to be politically inflammatory? It's their schtick; it's how they entice people to tune in.

        Are you really this naive?

BTW: I suggest you Google "Tea Party" and stop letting other people define it for you, and define it for yourself. You seem to be clueless about what their political ideology is. The Wikipedia entry is pretty comprehensive.

        Nothing beats firsthand knowledge.

          #27.4 - Wed Nov 7, 2012 7:31 AM EST

Thank you Arkius. To answer your questions:

          1. I watch Fox and listen to Rush from time to time to get all opinions, but I had heard about them bashing Christie from a radio news program.

          2. My original post was about the crisis we had at the shore and how both sides worked together without the usual vitriole to bring my community back from the edge of destruction.

BTW: I don't have to google Tea Party, I saw the Tea Party Congressmen take this country to the brink of bankruptcy and lowered our credit rating for the first time ever because they refused to set the tax of the 1% to what it was when Clinton was President. Actions speak louder than words.

If the two parties had worked together to solve the economic crisis the way they worked to solve Sandy crisis our country would be in a far better position economically than it s now.

          Michael:

You beg the question. You are assuming that the Tea Party members of congress are to blame for the bickering and lack of bipartisanship. How do you know that it isn’t the Democrats that are at fault here?

Michael, these Tea Party legislators have constituents that elected them to congress to represent their POV. Now what do you suggest that these elected officials do? Should they ignore their constituents, or should they represent them? Should the Republicans, the Democrats and the president respect the democratic election process, and listen to all the members of Congress, or do the Democrats have a right to mischaracterize and chastise a duly and properly elected group of representatives of the people as out-casts and wing-nuts?

You wrote: “The real Republicans have to shut the the Tea partiers down (sic).” What you’re suggesting here is that a duly and properly elected group of representatives of the people be silenced, censored and/or suppressed by another wing of their own party.

Michael that is not the American way. 500,000 service men and women gave their lives in Europe during WWII to ensure that the American way of life continue undisturbed. Part of America’s legacy is that every American’s voice is heard in congress via elected representation, and now you want to deny that American birthright to the people who elected Tea Party legislators to congress, because you don’t agree with their politics.

Most Americans do want bipartisan co-operation between the president and all the parties and ideologies in congress, but as everyone can plainly see, it has been the policy of the president and the Democrats in congress to play games with the idea of right and wrong.

It is politically incorrect to use the words rape, legal and pregnancy in the same sentence, but it perfectly acceptable to shove abortion down the throats of people who find it murderous and morally reprehensible. It is politically correct to discuss reproductive rights, but it’s not PC to demand that women be responsible for their own contraception and abortions. Tell the readers Michael; tell us about the common ground about which you fantasize.

Do unicorns graze there on the open range? Are the discussions void of passion? Do people talk in creamy tones? Is the bickering petty, or do the bickerers believe in their POV with such ardent fervor that they are willing to die for their cause, or kill for it?

Michael, we live in contentious times, filled with contentious issues discussed by passionate people that just aren’t going to change their minds. You may get bipartisan co-operation on some issues, but bipartisan co-operation means compromise, and Barrack Obama has not been willing to compromise, he has, more often than not, been willing to ostracize and demonize. If he wants to accomplish anything in his second term, he is going to have to reach across the isle with an open hand, and speak with an open mind, but I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for it to happen; I just don’t think he is able to compromise; he is too much of an ideologue.

            #27.6 - Wed Nov 7, 2012 8:42 AM EST

Just suppose a husband and wife decide to have a house built. There is only a set amount of money to create their "dream house". The wife thinks that the most important element is an ultra-modern kitchen filled withe the latest gadgets and appliances. The husband feels like the most imortant is the living room with large screen plasma tv, surround sound and a wet bar. If neither side gives a little the house doesn't get built. Compromise isn't a dirty word, it's what makes democracy work.

I'd love to continue this converstion, but I gotta get ready for work.

              Michael:

You need to Google “Tea Party” and read the Wikipedia entry. You still do not have a comprehensive understanding of what they advocate. It’s information; you’re acting as if it’s going to damage your brain if you get a better understanding of this political organization. Read the words, the words explain the actions. Using old, tired clichés to avoid gaining knowledge is absurd. Are you afraid of learning something?

I don’t know what you were watching, but it wasn’t the actions of the Tea Party Congressmen that lead to the lowering of the United States credit rating. It was a group effort of Republicans, Democrats and the president, which could have been avoided if any one of the three parties were willing to compromise. As I recall, the Republicans offered two compromise solutions; the president accepted one, which was rejected by the Democrats in congress, and the Democrats in congress accepted the last one, which Obama rejected. After a certain point, the Tea Party Congressmen played a minor, almost non-existent roll in the negotiations.

You did not adequately answer my second question. Please re-read.

Its really a shame blue4you.....Did you know that if Romney would have campaigned on saving the money that he raised for his campaign to be used on job creation after he had been elected that Americans would have voted for him.

You would think that a party so concerned about job creation would think of such an easy political platform to campaign on.

But in typical manner Romney makes the promise bankrupts his backers and makes off with billions in campaign finances.

                          Lol.

I wonder how much Romney DID NOT SPEND on his campaign and has safely hidden in his Swiss Bank accounts.

What Romney said before in that video was the absolute truth. Half of nation won't vote for him no matter what because they want the free handout. That's the truth. He was wrong in saying who those people are. Not the ones who don't pay federal tax but pay other state taxes, it's true majority of those who vote for Obama either has received bail out money from the government or are counting on the government handout to survive. These are the Obama supporters and there's no way to overcome their selfishness. I hope the House Republicians will be like steel to resist any attempt from Obama to raise taxes on anyone. Do not compromise in anyway on this. Absolutely. Let those who want handout add to the national debt and let's just pass it on to the younger generation since they want Obama and they can have it. Don't ask us to pay for their bills.

Oh let me guess, all you your friends are hard working rich people, because you don't hang with anyone making less than 100K

I certainly believe what I said. Those who vote for Obama mostly either because they've got some of his big 'redistribution' of wealth' during the last 4 years, or they're counting on Obamacare to solve their insurance problems, or their auto company received handouts. Of course, a portion of them are social liberals who just want to have free contraceptives, getting married with same sex person or something like that.

yeah, those crazy "social liberals" who want equal rights for all including gays.

attempts to "blame" obama supporters on wanting free handouts are doomed to failure. yes, that is "some" of the people, but there are also the people who fear the fascination with the military that the GOP has too, for example.

There is no way Romney stood a chance because of the race vote.

                                99% of blacks voted Obama.

The reason is because they are not stupid.

African Americans and the rest of the minorities know the score more than anyone in the U.S. to has used them as slaves and then only gave them the right to vote to ensure that said vote would the GOP's way.

                                  They ain't dumb.

I'd have to check the numbers, but it is likely that the hispanic vote doomed romney more than the black vote.

True...Obama did get about 80% of the Black vote...but he also won the women vote...all flavors. You see...his campaign advisers knew what the Republicans just don't get or refuse to accept....the minority vote is fast becoming the majority vote.

Obama only got 80% of the black vote. The other 20% either voted for Romney, were to drunk to write their name, were to busy having sex with another Black man's wife, or were in jail and didn't vote at all.

The question is when will America expect to see the money it gave to the Super Pacs to get Romney elected back with interest?

According to the Rules of War....the spoils goto the victors. And since Obama won the spoils need to find its way back into the coffer.

But then again typical Romney mentality.....Run a hard campaign, making promises to give America this or that so Americans will give him their hard earned money....then he flops in the election, says "Sorry, my campaign was taken out of context." and makes off with hundreds of millions in campaign dollars right along with his Super Pac buddies.

                                      Typical Romney ploy.

Bankrupt them sell them out and make off with billions in profit.

since congress passes spending bills, you'd best contact them to deal with the deficit. I tend to agree that nothing will change since both parties run up debt and refuse to work with each other.

The last time I checked Medicare and Medicaid STILL comes out of everyones paycheck in the form of taxes.

The last time I checked Obamacare still costs money.

Why should there be a battle?!? . . . Obviously, since you were a Robme supporter -- you know he got creamed, right? -- we (the sane people of this country) thought perhaps we'd let you and all his wealthy cronies split the costs . . . seems fair enough, right? . . . I mean, you're the guys that committed political suicide not us, so it only seems fair and right that you guys take care of any bills. It will be the political "beat-down" you nasty little buggers have been itching for for quite some time. And the time is now at hand.

Good chance at least two vacancies will come about in the next four years....but I do realize that someone of your political views would be ignorant of that.

Did you notice the lack of diversity at all of the Romney campaign stops?

I have customers who are not wealthy, not Mormon and not white. They are Romney supporters with his campaign signs in their front yards.Romney supporters are diverse but they have jobs so they don't have time to go to his campaign stops. They have jobs because most of them are self employed.

I heard some young people at the mall earlier talking about how they didn't vote.

One said that he didn't vote because he didn't like either candidate.

A vote was still cast however because he made the choice to not vote based upon his freedom to do so. Good guy really as he didn't throw away his vote. Good head on his shoulders.

The other one a female said that she didn't vote because she didn't have an ID and could not even vote Provitionally.

In her case there needs to be a National Voting Card that is handed out to each American when they turn the age of 18 and sign up for their first drivers license or the Selective Service.

Such an ID would be able to be used to prove their voting status and proof of residency but could not be used for anything else such as Identification or the purchasing of tobacco or alcoholic beverages.

A "No Vote" for any candidate is still a vote and is counted and protected under the Constitution of the United States of America.

yes, the victory belongs to those who really built this country - the middle class. The gopers failed to recognize anything american, such as compromise and tolerance. they have turned their back on the USA and voted for their zealot driven ideology, which will always live in the dark ages, i.e. the taliban and all other religious hypocrites.

God, the creator, is universal and for all men and women and children, not for just a few who profess to have had conversations with God and have the right way. they are the perpetrators of lies and deceit and, BTW, male dominance.

Thank god this vulture capitalist and his whiny little VP nominee got their clocks cleaned. to bad that paulie boy will continue in the HOR as an advocate of no change unless its on his terms - one way, one dimensional intellectual incompetent as he obviously demonstrates.

The less than fortunate have also had a hand in building this country as well.

It might seem disheartening in contrast but I have seen many Americans both in the country and the city pushing around shopping carts full of metal and old trucks full of scrap taking it to the salvage yard in order to make a living.

The only ones who do not push such a cart are those like Romney.

Interesting where the red states are located, isn't it? Romney didn't carry either Massachusetts or Michigan (his home states) and Ryan didn't carry Wisconsin (his home state). Ryan didn't even carry the COUNTY from which he came. Hmmmmmmmmmm.....

America jumped the shark in July 1969. There have been many attempts to turn the decline around, but the rise of the religious right in the 70's and 80's has increased the downward spiral.

I'm optimistic, however, that the American people, in re-electing Obama have come to their collective senses. It will be the Republican party that is left on the dung-heap of history.

Did you know that if Romney would have campaigned on saving the money that he raised for his campaign to be used on job creation after he had been elected that Americans would have voted for him.

Worth investigating and returning to America isn't it?
