Voters back Obama despite economic concerns, exit polls show

NBC's Chuck Todd discusses how Florida may be used as a model for the rest of the country to show how changes in demographics, particular an influx of Hispanic voters in key counties, affected the outcome of the election.

Updated at 12:26 a.m. ET: President Barack Obama won re-election despite an electorate that sees a nation on the wrong track, with a weak and troubling economy, according to NBC projections and exit polls. Exit poll interviews with voters point to three big reasons for Obama’s victory:

  • First, despite a slim majority of voters thinking the country is on the wrong track, 54 percent approve of the way Obama is doing his job, and the electorate was almost exactly split on whether Obama or Romney would be better at handling the economy.
  • Among the four voters in 10 who said they think economic conditions in the country are getting better, a huge majority, nearly nine out of ten, said they voted for Obama.
  • Finally, a slight majority of voters voiced an unfavorable view of Romney personally, while a slight majority had a favorable view of Obama. On the attribute of whether the president or his GOP rival was “a candidate who cares about people like me” Obama had a massive lead over Romney.

Voters were sharply divided along lines of sex, ethnicity, age, income and religion, exit polls showed.

NBC's Tamron Hall breaks down the results of the NBC News national exit poll, which shows a gender gap that worked in President Obama's favor as well as a boost from the Latino community, from which he received more votes than four years ago.

The gender gap was distinct: Among male voters, 52 percent favored Romney, while 45 percent backed Obama. The data reflected slipping support for Obama, who won 49 percent of male voters four years ago. (Full exit polling data is available here.

Among white male voters the disparity was even sharper: Obama was winning just 36 percent of the white male vote Tuesday, compared with the 41 percent he won in 2008, the exit polls showed.

Women voters favored Obama 55 percent to 43 percent – about the same split as four years ago when 56 percent of women voters preferred Obama and 43 percent supported Republican candidate Sen. John McCain.

Within the female vote there was a sharp divide between married and unmarried women: Married women backed Romney, 53 percent to 46 percent, while unmarried women preferred Obama by a better than 2-to-1 ratio, 68 percent to 30 percent.

Virginia Senator-elect Tim Kaine weighs in on what made the difference for him and the president in his state, how Obama plans to work with the GOP and why it may be a more cooperative relationship in this second term.

Among white voters -– who accounted for nearly three quarters of the electorate -- Romney was leading Obama by 58 to 40 percent, making Romney’s performance among white voters three points better than McCain’s in 2008.

Younger voters preferred Obama, but not by as lopsided a margin as in 2008: Among voters age 18 to 29 Tuesday, three out of five said they voted for Obama, compared with about two of three in 2008.

On the other hand, Romney had a substantial advantage among voters 65 and older, who favored the Republican by a margin of 11 points.

Supporters of President Barack Obama cheer as they wait for Obama to appear on stage during the Obama Election Night watch party at McCormick Place Tuesday, Nov. 6, in Chicago, Ill.

Latinos and blacks overwhelmingly voted for Obama, according to the exit polls. Latinos, an important part of Obama’s winning coalition in 2008, were even stronger in their support of Obama than they were four years ago. Latinos, who accounted for about a tenth of the national electorate, favored Obama by about 70-30. Black voters continued to be exceptionally loyal to Obama – he was getting more than nine in 10 of their votes Tuesday night, just as he did four years ago.

Obama showed strength among lower-income voters, winning three out of five voters with family incomes below $50,000. Among middle-income voters Romney led 52 percent to 46 percent, and he did a bit better than that among voters with family incomes of $100,000 over more.

Another dividing line in the electorate, as in 2008, was religion. Three out of five voters who told exit poll interviewers they attended religious services weekly or more often preferred Romney, while 40 percent backed Obama. This represented about a five point improvement among such voters for Romney over McCain’s performance four years ago.

Among those who said they never attend religious services (a much smaller portion of the electorate) Obama won more than three of five.

A slim majority of voters Tuesday told exit poll interviewers that they felt the country was “off on the wrong track,” but the mood of the electorate was markedly more optimistic than it was four years ago when a record three out of four voters said the country was on the wrong track.

An overwhelming 76 percent of voters said the state of the economy is poor, or “not so good,” but voters did not tend to blame Obama, who came into office in the midst of a financial crisis and deep recession. Only 38 percent said Obama was “more to blame for the current economic conditions,” compared with 53 percent who laid the blame more on former President George W. Bush.

The TP/GOP loses. Like I always say, TP is good for one thing and one thing only. TO WIPE ONES ARSE.

I hear the TP lost Lugars Senate seat and they are targeting two more moderate GOP Senators in 2014 that they want to turn over to the Dems. too.

While I would have loved to see the Green Party and the Libertarian Party show up on the polls, I guess I am breathing a sigh of relief that the Republican Party's candidate will not be our President. Please, Republicans, come back when you are true to the origins of your party.

Voted for Anderson, would never vote for Romney, if forced to vote between the two parties would have voted for Obama. Human rights and a government that doesn't want to control my actions are most important. Practice what you preach.

At this moment he only has 38% of the vote in the State where he was Governor. Doubt if that will change much at this point.

I don't think people voted for Obama because they thought he did a good job I think they voted for him because they thought Romney would be worse.

For those of you who might be inclined to suggest that this election changed NOTHING, clinging as you do to hate and fear, consider this: Importantly, tonight Barack Obama was elected President of the United States of America, to serve through 2016.

Of equal importance, tonight Hillary Clinton was also elected President of the United States, to serve from 2016 through 2024...and there is no force on earth, none, which can preclude her ascendency.

Whatismore, tonight the Supreme Court began its unstoppable march toward progressivism. By the time Hillary departs the Oval Office, the Court will be a youthful Center-Left province, perhaps 6-3.

Sadly, it has become clear that the modern Republican Party no longer has a future at the national level, or at least for as long as they continue to ostracize the voices of compromise and moderation within their own ranks.

For the most part, with the possible exception of Ted Cruz and perhaps one or two others, those Tea Party candidates who didn't lose outright won by the slimmest of margins. Bachmann and West will likely go down within the hour.

Tonight, a majority of voters across the American political landscape chose Barack Obama and the Democrat agenda. The President won both the popular vote AND the Electoral College. The President's Senate majority increased. The Republican Party failed to expand its majority in the House.

This win was as decisive as it was overwhelming.

This election changed EVERYTHING.

You know what they say: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." So, we're in for four more years of..... blaming it on Bush. It won't surprise me if Obama succeeds in making sure the US Dollar loses it's place as the international currency of choice. After all, he stated that it shouldn't be, and that was while he was President. Yup, the polls say the country is heading in the wrong direction, so, let's vote for more of it. Good grief.

But, It goes to show Romney was right. When people realize they can vote themselves money out of other peoples' pockets, then you have reached to point of the decline of our great nation. The only hope is that the repubs in the House grow a spine and do everything they can to stop the destruction. I don't hold out much hope of that. After all, they won a landslide in 2010 and still they caved to the dems on almost everything. A sad day for America indeed.

Get over it, and focus on what you can do to help our country and our planet. Your hatred is not helpful, contributes nothing, and it shows you are just a mean-spirited, misinformed, narrow minded person. I have never been more proud to be an American than tonight. We fought and won against incredible forces determined to defeat the American dream.

A dream born from very brave and revolutionary American colonial patriots determined to gain independence from the mightiest empire on earth. We won that battle.

A dream fiercely defended by millions of young American troupe that sacrificed their very young lives for all of us. We won that battle from the revolutionary war to WW2.

A dream defended again today by proud Americans to defeat the billions spent by special interests to buy this election, to defeat the dirty Republican tricks of voter suppression and the bold -faced lies of the Romney campaign to win this election.

Truth, justice and the American way of life triumphed once again today to proudly lead the rest of the free world. Some of us may mistakenly discount that influence. The true patriots of 1776 thru 2012 realize that American influence in the entire world greatly effects our own future. We must lead, follow or get the hell out of the way. Today, we chose leadership of true American values of the American people to continue just leadership of the free world. God bless America.

I would rather have a president that is inexperienced, over a president with an agenda to bring the middle class to their knees. The middle class has been screwed for decades with this trickle down economics and stagnant pay while CEO's have the country convinced that they are entitled to 500% pay increases (just a guess, maybe more, maybe less). If the republicons really were against wage redistribution, we wouldnt have had the wage redistribution that has been going on for the last 40 years. But i guess wage redistribution is ok if it is the rich taking from the middle class. If we had a strong middle class we wouldnt be having issues with this country going broke and our infrastructure falling apart because the us would be rolling in the tax dollars that the middle class would provide. Now that the top few percent has all the money and feels like they are entitled to keep it all, we are as a country going broke. I say go aheadand tax the hell out of the middle class, however, not until the wage inequality of middle class and the top few mega rich starts to even out a bit. Its also been proven to be wrong, the Idea that we must pay executives big big money and perks like company plane and obscene corporate benefits like in house massages and wardrobe allowances and such, so that they dont leave for a competitor that will steal them. Just because a CEO of a Telecommunications company may do great things for his company, it does not mean that he/she would excel and stand out at another business like say an insurance company. Some of the best CEO's in this country have risen from the bottom, starting out in the mail room and working his way up, climbing the corporate ladder as they say. They tend to know the company inside and out and excel at their job. Check it out for yourselves, its all true. Anyways, to get back to the subject. I guess the American people are getting wise to the ways of the greedy elite, and i think that in the long run that the republican party has seen better days and are heading toward extinction. I would be happy to pay 40% or more in taxes if i was actually earning a paycheck that i could live off, Even semi comfortably. And im sure this country would thrive after the middle class is rebuilt and we take our money back from the thieves that stole it from us in the first place. In closing i would say that the only thing that the rich folks are right about is the fact that taxing them more would save the country, it wouldnt, taxing the middle class is the way to go, however, heres the catch. pay the middle class first. even out the disparity that is far worse than most other countries. No excuses that the world has changed and that were in a global economy. The powerful people in this great country have sold us out for a profit. A profit that benefits a few %. Bring manufacturing back. Pay Talented low level workers what they deserve. Not what the company can afford after the bigwigs suck up all the companies resources so that there is nothing left to reward the true soul of the company, the worker, and make the middle class strong again or things will keep going downhill, and go downhill fast. Sorry if this post is all over the place, I just happened to be pissed, and have so many things on my mind about everything going on today.

Really, Oeterk? Just because your candidate won the election does not give you the right to tell other Americans that they do not have the right of citizenship. That is a pretty extreme statement. What about fiscal conservative Independents such as myself? Are we mandated to pack up and leave as well?

Can you estimate what the country's debt will be in 2016? If it is difficult for you, you can just indicate a simple >$16T or <$16T (ie - will Obama cut the debt or add to it by 2016). What is the plan when we have finally maxed out the country's credit card with China?

BO's last campaign promise was to lower the deficit by 5 trillion dollars in 3 years, uh no you didn't.....Was the deficit raised by 6 trillion dollars in three years? Yes you did. Sit with your thumb up your ass for seven hours while our Benghazi Embassy was attacked and our brave people butchered? Yes you did. Vote this idiot back into office? Yes you did. When you signed your name on the ballot, you also signed this country's death certificate, yes you did. I hope you have a life jacket cause this ship is sinking fast. Don't knock on my door when you are broke, hungry, jobless, and homeless because I won't be home. BO ran on a campaign promise of hope and change, too bad he neglected to say the "change" would be from bad to worse. I know of no other high level important job where you can blame four years of failures on the guy who had the job before you. Can you get away with this on your job?

The only good thing I can say about this election is that BO can't blame his future failures on the last president any more, because it was him!

I can only surmise by your name that you walk because you can't afford gas. Thank your pres for that! And just so you know, I do not consider myself a Republican or a Democrat, I consider myself an American. An American who is sick to death of what politics has done to my country!

lol again, Seven. I suppose you're going to try to convince folks that those people receiving food stamps are SOLELY due to Obama policies. Do you know how many were on food stamps prior to that? Do you know why? How about that unemployment? It topped out 6 months into Obama's FIRST term, and has been going down ever since. If the GOTea had taken their thumbs out of their...mouths just once and worked to get something resembling a jobs bill done, imagine how much better things might be at this point. Benghazi? Fox Noise. 12 US embassies attacked and people killed from 2000 to 2008 and not a peep out of them. Suddenly, they need some serious distraction, so you've all got your panties in a wad over this one, pretending that you care about those lost. Meanwhile, even Condi Rice says Obama admin acted appropriately and that there was no cover-up. Death certificate for the country? Oh, the DRAMA when you kooks lose one. And finally, since you tried to turn it into something negative (like you doubtless do with most things), I walk because a) I can - I'm about 30 minutes door to door with my full-time, well-paying, private-sector job; b) It's very good for me - exercise and stress relief and a beautiful view all in one; and c) all that money I save on gas just paid for my 2 week vacation to the Italian riviera. :) You just keep hoisting your fanny into that truck and burning up that fossil fuel though, and huffing and puffing about why I might be walking, m'kay? ;)

Just curious. How come there aren't any Democrats asking themselves why Hillary is quitting? Maybe because she does not want to be part of the history which is causing the ship to sink? Or is it because she wants to distance herself from the stench in the White House? She is no dummy and neither is her husband, so you might want to ask yourself why? Wait until the POTUS taps Keith Ellison to take Hillary's place. Just wait.

If she did though, it would probably be due to exhaustion - she's lasted quite a bit longer than most SOS do. Once again, and perhaps someone can read it real slow for you - there is NO sinking ship (unless you're counting Romney's presidential ambitions or Ryan's credibility as a "numbers wonk"). Latino groups to Obama: You owe Latinos the election, now pass immigration reform

"Leaders of immigrant rights and Latino groups told reporters in a conference call on Wednesday that Obama owes his second term to Latino voters, and should repay them by passing comprehensive immigration reform. Obama promised to pass a law legalizing many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country while he campaigned four years ago, and he's been chastised by Latino leaders for breaking his promise."

The republicans threw Americans and our economy under the bus for their party aspirations for the White House.........lets see if they do it for another 4 years.......if they do it will be the end of the republican party...........heavy price to pay to get rid of such vile, hateful, greedy, lying, unpatriotic group of horrid people...even still if they filibuster another 300 plus times and do everything in their power to stagnate out economy so the democrats look bad, in their hopes of owing the White House again, there are those brainwashed republicans voters who would lose everything and even though they were shown proof that the republicans were the cause of their misery..would vote republican anyway...

fortunately the number of republican voters who still remain totally brainwashed is diminishing.............hopefully someday all Americans will be in the 21st century.

Will be interesting to see if the republicans continue to vote their own measures and bills down if the President shows interest and praise for them.

Will be interesting to see if the republicans start voting some jobs bills through finally......it is has been 2 years since people voted republicans to rule in the congress and 2 years since Mitch McConnell told everyone that their sole goal was to use all their resources to make President Obama a one term President and that if folks wanted jobs assistance they would have to help the republicans retake the Presidency..............how is that working out for you Mitch?

Enough with republican lies and stall tactics and disingenuous talk and using tax payer dollars to the work of their party and no work for the people.....

start producing worthy actions republicans or see yourselves fired......you have enjoyed wonderful pay and outstanding benefits while not doing your job as Americans who pay your mortgage lose everything.............

we the people hold the republican party in contempt..........you are accused of dereliction of duty.............you are guilty of fraudulent use of tax payer dollars....you were not elected and paid to go to Washington to work for the success of your political party........you were elected to champion the American people.............to help the American people........

no more filibustering, no more bills reaffirming "in God we trust" on our money........no more bills sent to the floor (what is it 33 times now) to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act---you are doing nothing but wasting time and money while Americans need jobs........no more holding Americans and the government hostage to get astronomical tax breaks for the 1% riches American and adding it to the deficit....no more ideas of privatizing social security or medicare..........no more attacks on Roe vs Wade and women's rights......no more talk of war with Iran and Syria............no more public servant bashing---you are ones yourselves, you know---..stop thinking that money has more value than human life.......just stop.....grow up..........you republicans shame yourselves and embarrass the rest of us...everyone is wise to your non productive, unpatriotic and economically destructive tactics and we have no use for any of you if this is the way you are going to continue to act...........either the republican party evolves into the 21st century and starts behaving in a bipartisan productive manor or we the people will see you voted out of office and we will keep you out of office.

I have serious doubts that the republicans can overcome their hatred of democrats and people of color and actually start acting like civilized intelligent bi partisan legislators...........their hatred and rage has gotten so out of hand it is as if they are consumed by it..........and the base emulates them.....shame on the republican party for the example they set.

republicans have demonstrated over and over how awful they are........it would be so great to be rid of them.

If the republican base hasn't figured out that fox news hasn't been giving them accurate news, polling data or even any legitimate information, they are too stupid to save from themselves. The PPP poll won as the most accurate of the information.

Nate Silver-political pundit winner, New York times statistician who built a stats formula for baseball, sold that and then he went to politics. He predicted 2008 and 2012, not based on feelings, not based on gut instinct and certainly not based on the lies that fox tells. Its all about the numbers.

Obama won because he ran a targeted campaign to get women and Latino voters and while Republicans continue to insult and berate the electorate, Obama was embracing it. They are still insulting and berating them rather than figuring out that they are running on 1980's technology and electorate, while Obama was running on a very technocrat and ground effort and they outspent Obama by 3 to 1.

I have been following Nate Silver for months and I wasn't worried about the election. Republicans tried to make him sound like some kind of psychic. Its all about math and numbers, based on all polls not just the ones they liked.

                    Guess again stack.

Winning the popular vote by a few million ballots is no mandate from the people; it is a Pyrrhic victory.

Basically, an underwhelming win means that Obama's policies have been rejected; he won because he carried hard-core Liberal/Democrats, minorities and single woman, i.e., single issue voters and team players. Remove these voters from his column, and he loses by 3:1.

Obama will have no more success in his second term than he did in his first term, which means that the economy will either continue to stagnate, or because of the negative effects of Obamacare, will degenerate.

Good luck keeping your job; if you have one.

Work together to get things done? Dream on. I guess it depends on what you want to get done. If you want prosperity and opportunity, then you aren't going to get it for the next four years. The fact is that Obama and the dems haven't proposed one piece of legislation designed to improve the economy. And, they haven't passed one piece of legislation that has worked. The only "success" Obama has had is to weaken the United States. That is his agenda and he has been very successful at that. So, forward we go.

congress didn't work w/ him for 4 years? Democrats held the majority for the first two years.

I don't envy BHO, he has this sequestration mess (that he signed into law) to deal with.

As a military vet. I think there is room to cut spending in DOD. But sequestration is using a battle axe instead of a scalpel.

I think you'll see alot of Officers, SNCO's and NCO's retire or seperate in the next few years. (Basically the core of the military experience)

The primary Republican goal of assuring that President Obama becomes a one term President has failed miserably. Their next secret meeting on the night of Jan. 20, 2013 is most likely as big of a mystery to them as it is for the rest of us. Will they decide to get along well with others or stubbornly refuse to accept the will of the American electorate once again?

That single decision will determine the legacy and future of the Republican party. Will they refuse to seriously compromise to finally become totally irrelevant and obsolete? Will they awaken to the fact that their jobs require them to do the people's work instead of fulfilling traitorous pledges to the disastrous Tea Party and Grover Norquist?

As an American patriot and Democrat, I appreciate the need for a responsible and sensible Republican party of years gone by. I much prefer their rebirth rather than their demise. It's all in the hands of Republican supporters and their leadership.

You don’t have the intelligence to infer anything about anyone, and you have the nerve to talk about “juvenile attempts at insulting” people.

Here is an example of an argument: “Winning the popular vote by a few million ballots is no mandate from the people; it is a Pyrrhic victory.” Premise-Winning the popular vote by a few million ballots is no mandate from the people. Conclusion-it is a Pyrrhic victory.

Argument #2: “Basically, an underwhelming win means that Obama's policies have been rejected; he won because he carried hard-core Liberal/Democrats, minorities and single woman, i.e., single issue voters and team players. Remove these voters from his column, and he loses by 3:1.” Premise#1-an underwhelming win means that Obama's policies have been rejected. Premise#2-he won because he carried hard-core Liberal/Democrats, minorities and single woman, i.e., single issue voters and team players. Conclusion-Remove these voters from his column, and he loses by 3:1. The last paragraph is also an argument, but I’ll leave you to use your newfound cognitive skills to work that one out for yourself.

Now, if you weren’t such a complete doosh nozzle, and if you had more than four active brain cells you would be able to recognize simple arguments on your own. However, since you are the product of a sibling marriage, I don’t expect you to understand the nuance of something as complicated as a two or three sentence argument.

                            Intellectually, you’re not a machine; you’re a manual eggbeater.

Not surprising that the few teabaggers posting are such pathetically poor losers - they are just as nasty when they win something. Fortunately, those whose mothers raised them wrong are the minority of the minority.

Would someone give "arkius" back his/her binky and shut that fit up?

The Republican party will now, finally, be forced to remove the parasite teabaggers or run the risk of having the life sucked out of them. Eventually the baggers will find another host, since they aren't smart or clever enough to form their own party, and let's just hope they find one that is more appropriate to their true values...like the taliban.

I was infuriated by the actions of Republicans in the last congress but will always have faith that our fore-fathers created a brilliant system of government that is, ultimately, self correcting. That was proven, once again, last night.

Am. vets - And Mexico loyalists are already demanding that the floodgates be opened:

Latino groups to Obama: You owe Latinos the election, now pass immigration reform

"Leaders of immigrant rights and Latino groups told reporters in a conference call on Wednesday that Obama owes his second term to Latino voters, and should repay them by passing comprehensive immigration reform. Obama promised to pass a law legalizing many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country while he campaigned four years ago, and he's been chastised by Latino leaders for breaking his promise."

                                    http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/latino-groups-obama-owe-latinos-election-now-pass-194113601--election.html

Imagine that, race-based groups telling the President he owes them... the respect for his "leadership" is clearly immense. (sarcasm)

Congratulations Mexico, enjoy the remains of what used to be a place worth running TO.

"Yes, you did" - Satisfied Democrats?

There is no one that can be truly called a leader in the White House, so why should we follow him? This is our country too, so we have a stake in it's governance.

You seem to be willing to kid yourself into thinking that this country will be moving forward. Sorry, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Short sighted ideologues like you and stackdat, have ensured that America will either economically stagnate or decline over the next four years.

Thank you for putting ideology over the good of the nation. Thank you for being so ignorant that you were unable to distinguish between Obama's deceit and political manipulation, and Romney's economic and organizational skills. If you have a job, hold on to it very lovingly, because you won't have it for long.

The man you supported will betray you, and I will laugh when you have lost everything.

Well u are right about one thing. It is our nation. Our means all of us not repubs not demos but all of us. Leadership has been established and as the other poster said, if u wish not to follow them move out of the way and be left behind.

I'm sure u were saying the repubs would be taking the white house so i'll take that last comment with a grain of salt.

BTW, what are your plans once you're unemployed based on your cynicism ?

A leader must have the quality of uniting people, Obama has shown a willingness to divide people; he is not a leader; he does not have the admiration and respect of the people he hopes to lead. He is the president of a deeply divided country, a division that he worked hard to create.

If you want to talk yourself into believing that he can be the president of half the country, and still be called our national leader, then you go ahead and do that. I hope you will pardon me if I laugh at your smug self-deception.

If I choose not to embrace your fairytale of Obama's national leadership, it does not mean that I must get out of the way or be left behind. It means that I can stand aside and watch Obama make a fool of you.

You wrote: "BTW, what are your plans once you're unemployed based on your cynicism?" You beg the question. You're assuming that my arguments are invalid.

Since you haven't offered any reasonable counter arguments, just irrelevant fluff, there is no reason to discuss a POV that doesn't exist.

BTW: Your sentence structure is horrible. You would be a lot easier to understand if you wrote clearly. For example: BTW: Based on your cynicism, what are your plans once you've become unemployed? Much clearer, yes?

                                        @arkius

let's start at the bottom. The first juvenile action taken by any debater is to throw barbs. A good angle so many like to use is grammar as if theirs are any better. If the structure is so bad which by the way u understood well enough to reply, the best way for correction is to point out what it is and since u failed to do that, i'll take your ability to educate anyone with a grain of salt. Last time i checked, i wasn't being tested for a grade so syntax, grammar, punctuation and whatever english skills u may frown on doesn't apply here.

No matter how great a teacher, a teacher can only teach if the student wants to learn. Just as a leader cannot unite anyone who wishes not to follow. He can provide a hand but if u are not willing to accept it,..well u get the point. At least i hope u do.

You wrote: "I'm sure u were saying the repubs would be taking the white house so i'll take that last comment with a grain of salt." I'll try and clarify it for simple minds like yourself. U said, "I will laugh when you have lost everything." Well had the repub party won, u would have laughed anyways... Taking something with a grain of salt is an expression for something to be taken lightly. So basically the comment u made has no real meaning or weight to it. Hopefully u understood that.

You wrote: "BTW, what are your plans once you're unemployed based on your cynicism?" You beg the question. You're assuming that my arguments are invalid.

That's the smartest thing u've said yet.

Arkius --- the current Republican brand is dead. The dominance of white males in American politics is over. Republicans LOST every demographic except old, white, high school educated, men and in Ohio -- they even LOST among that demographic. Romney lost among college educated, among women, among Hispanics, among people under 40, and among Asians. While Republicans won in Texas, Arizona, and Georgia, their margins are shrinking. If the Republican party continues on their current path, they may go the way of the old Whig party of the 19th century.

Romney lost to African Americans, Latinos, and single woman. Among losses in the other demographics you mentioned, the differences are marginal on a state-by-state basis.

For the sake of argument, lets say that your demographics are broadly inclusive. What does it tell you about the national cultural make up, future American traditions, and how will these changes influence the tax base, and national security?

                                                          rbk:

Romney didn't lose the popular vote by a landslide. According to Slate's chief political correspondent, John Dickerson, "The president won because he ran a permanent campaign, keeping his offices open in the battleground states from his 2008 campaign" (Dickerson: Slate, 2012).

Obama's victory was purely tactical; "He has no grand mandate that comes out of Tuesday's numbers" (ibid). He won because he never stopped campaigning; he had a better campaign team, and he did a better job of defining his opponent (ibid). This time around the voters didn't buy into his rhetoric.

Almost half the voters rejected his policies, he won because he had the support of African Americans, single woman and Latinos (ibid). These groups are primarily single issue oriented (ibid). Apparently, none of the issues that were important to these groups involved the economy. The minorities in America were the hardest hit by the economic down-turn, but for some reason, they did not see it as a major concern.

To say that the Republicans have to do a better job of courting minorities is absurd. It is asking them to do the same kind of disingenuous campaigning that Obama did, i.e., pander to their single issue concerns, and ignore the big picture, more important issue that has a greater impact on their future, the economy.

A telling factor is the poor showing Romney made in the State he once Governed - 38% in Massachusetts.

On the other hand Mitt scored a large percent of the vote in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. The large numbers of Mormons spread out in this nation accounted for a large percentage of his vote.

While many try to make the same argument concerning the Black vote and Obama the fact is the people of Massachusetts know Mitt Romney and did not want him. Plus Mitt tried to run the "I am a Latino" angle and the Hispanic vote also went to Obama. The Republicans have worked very hard to eliminate the Hispanic voters and are succeeding. The Asians also voted for Obama.

Basically Mitt got the Mormons and the Religious/Birther/Muslim nuts and Obama got the rest.

And as hummbird posts below, They "Love" this man. This scares the hell out of me. A true leader should not be loved, respected, but not Loved. Hitler was loved. And all one needs to do is substitute "the Rich", "the 1%ers" for "the Jews" and one can easily see what this can lead to.(not necessarily death camps, but nationalization of certain industries or other Anti-American policies) Be ware of class warfare. and here I thought he was going to unite all of us.

But what scares me more is that Obama is Soros' boy. And George Soros is the destroyer of currency. Something you Obama supporters might consider: $16.209 Trillion in debt. (that's roughly $53,000 for every man, woman and child, and Obama is "responsible" for about $15,000 (28%)of that) And How much currency has Obama Printed? One must understand that the laws of supply and demand apply to currency as well, and when you have a large supply of currency, it becomes worth less, worthless. (Do you think gold is worth more, or that the Dollar is worth less?)

I predict, and I hope I am wrong, but I see a repeat of the Weimar Republic circa 1923.

(Bunch of Small Town Hicks?, Rednecks? Back water bumkins? City Slickers? White Supremacist? Black Supremacist? Juden?) It is in part of the human condition, only those ignorant of human behavior (Mostly Democrats), deny this. WE all believe that there is something inherently better about the place we come from and the people that surround us, than other places.

The difference is how one deals with it so as not to become a bigot.

I posted the Quote from Blazing Saddles as a joke, (it was the quote, "I am depressed", that leaped to mind when I heard Obama had won) and something of a commentary, but not for the bigoted nature for what it seems. (If any of these idiot liberals understood the true nature of Blazing Saddles, instead of the superficial words used, I might actually be able to carry on an intelligent conversation. But as Miklkit demonstrated, it is all a knee jerk emotional reaction. So how does one rationally discuss things with one who is irrational?)

And as I mentioned before, the reaction to Obama's own words...nothing.

The man has admitted to being a communist, a racist, a bigot, a chauvinist yet all I hear are screams of delight that he won. And according to the likes of Miklkit, I am the Pig...yup makes perfect sense to me...Change the subject, ignore the facts, name call and marginalize.

Oh and BTW, get ready for WWIII (China, Iran, [i.e the Muslim Caliphate] and possibly Russia), I predict it will start in 2017 or more likely 2018(if the world doesn't end on Dec. 21 ;-) ) A Republican President will get the blame, just like 9-11, it will be this President that sets the ball in motion.

The polls here in Alaska have not even closed yet and the race has been called all ready. I would like to see each state get one vote. This would give the less populated areas of the country an equal vote for our president.

As it is now, the more populace states get a larger voice, i.e more EC.

Sam, don't be an ass anine.... and you should be a little more respectful, because I am guessing the a lot of your food is derived from that cornfield in Kansas.

As it is we have Senators who represent more sheep than people setting national policy for states as large as many countries. This is insane!

U do realize bush #2 would not have been elected pres. his first term if we had the popular vote then. But i do agree with the popular vote should be the determining factor.

HE HAD TWO FULL YEARS, TO BALANCE A BUDGET, AND PAY DEBT. HALF OF HIS PRESIDENCY.

Go cry on Pat Robertson's evil shoulder and pray for the genocide of all non-evangelicals. Leave the governing to the free thinkers that love our Constitution and respect our fore-fathers.

Perhaps you would not be a "dumbfarmboy" if you opened up a dictionary. Try, on your quest for self-improvement, looking up the word "filibuster" before you come back to the table.

Please explain your definition of Fascist to me so that a I may know what you are talking about. It is very difficult to have a reasonable discussion with someone who is using Politically Corrected words

Here is my Definition: Fascism is centrism...hard centrism. And that's why populism and centrism are so dangerous...all fascist regimes are born in populist movements. Fascism is a cross between Capitalism and Communism or Socialism. That is, the Private Ownership in all but a few strategic industries with heavy governmental control and regulation. This is absolutely contrary to Right wing conservatism. There obviously needs to be some Government regulation, but all controls should be market based.

And how many times did the Republicans filibuster? And how many times did the Dems offer a compromise? And how many times did the Reps offer a compromise only to be rejected by the Dems?

And NO I WAS NOT REFERRING TO MY FELLOW AMERICANS, I WAS REFERRING TO THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY as a Bohemian Cluster F**K!!!!, they are no longer my fellow Americans, since they seem intent on this Un- American activity. (not that you'll understand that comment either, you have no idea the meaning of this country, the idea of self determination, self reliance, and self satisfaction. You have no idea what it means to be an American. To be the best in the world.

Congratulate yourselves all you want, but as Margaret Thatcher, said, "the problem with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money". So tax the Rich all you want, soon they'll be Rich no more.

But this isn't Socialism and Obama isn't a Communist... yeah, right. But you will never understand this, and I am the quack, the nut job, the missing link...

                                                                                    #9.6 - Wed Nov 7, 2012 8:46 PM EST

The President is sworn into office on Jan. 21st. So, Democrats held the Majority in both house as of Jan. 03, 2009 until Jan. 03 2011 (following the 2010 elections in which the Reps, gained a majority in the House of Representative) {God I wish you people would learn how our Government Works}

SO, Obama had control of the WH, The Senate, and the House from Jan 2009 to Jan 2011. TWO YEARS. He should have been able to do as he wished. All one needs to do is look at how the DNC Convention was operated this year to understand what happened, and it wasn't the REps fault.

My guess is that the Reps, offered to go along with the ACA, until they saw all the crap the Dems were piling onto it. And decided it violated several sections of the Constitution, which it still does, even though the SCOTUS says otherwise, but you wouldn't understand that either, somehow in your world a year equals a month.

The fact most of us have known since we were young adults is that physical perfection is not where true beauty resides. It resides in the heart and the mind. Michelle Obama possesses beauty you likely will never (be able to) appreciate. That's your disability.

I understand trying to keep intrest rates low to boost economic growth, but the banks aren't lending. The longer we keep rates low, the weaker the dollar becomes. 3 yrs ago milk cost 2.65, now it costs 3.50. This doesn't seem like much but it's a 25% increase. Has your income increased by 25%?

                                                                                                            Enjoy your milk.

Maybe thats because we don't listen to the cr*p put out by Fox Noise, Karl , Rush, Glen and all the other right wing nut jobs. We need to work together to get this country moving faster toward recovery. The future of the Republican party is at stake here (not that I really care).

They are so angry right now that they are hoping that gridlock continues in Washington. I personally was disappointed when Bush was reelected, but accepted it, and him as my President. It is not in the best interest of this country to have a repeat of the last 4 years and could push this country into another recession. Why can't everyone just work together. So tired of this.

If the GOP continues to gridlock like they have the last four years the repeat of tonight will happen in 2016 with another Democratic president chosen by America.

Slowly the GOP will create so much gridlock that they will be voted out of office.

The last four years have shown the GOP's trend of gridlocking just for the sake of gridlocking.

There is an old saying in the video game development community. It goes.

"If the devil is able to make a 1000 moves every second taking away a square with every jump and the angel is only one to make one jump who will win in the end? The angel will of course. Why? Because the devil has made one too many jumps and gridlocked itself onto its own square."

The angel on the other hand can jump to any square that the devil has not jumped onto."

The same is true with the GOP. They have gridlocked so much the last four years not allowing President Obama to make many moves but they have made alot of blocking moves that they have blocked theirself into their own trap with no squares left for them to jump onto.

                                                                                                                          • 5 votes

Here are the facts about that so call "super majority:

Apparently everyone forgot the President needed 60 votes in the Senate to pass legislation. Newsflash!! The healthcare bill was passed using "reconciliation", because there were not 60 Democrats in the Senate.

Immigration, Gay Rights could not be passed with the same process because it is reserved for budgetary matters. The Stimulus was hijacked by the Republicans and job-creating measures were traded for tax cuts because...there were not 60 Democratic votes to pass it.

Apparently no one remembers that Scott Brown was sworn into office in February of 2010. At that time, the President had only been in office for ONE year. Most folks remember that the election of Scott Brown reduced the number of Democratic senators to 59. So the President could not have possibly had Congressional control for two years.

                                                                                                                            Here's the timeline:

When the election dust settled, Democrats had won 59 seats; the Republicans 41.

January 20, 2009 - After suffering a seizure during Barack Obama's inaugural luncheon, Senator Kennedy’s health forced him to retreat to Massachusetts. Also Senator Al Franken of Minnesota had not been seated because the previous Senator, Norm Coleman challenged the election results.

So at the beginning of his Presidency, Democrats had 57 elected senators…55 Democrats and 2 Independents.

Why do you think he had to compromise with Republicans on the Stimulus bill? He didn’t have enough Democrats to pass the bill! Why don't you people who moan such disappointment know this?

April 28, 2009 news outlets issued the following report:

Republican Sen. Arlen Specter has switched parties, which would give Democrats a filibuster-proof 60 seats. You do remember the filibuster? The Republicans employed it more than in any time in history for the express purpose of stalling legislation.

Despite the fact that the media hailed the party switch of Arlen Specter and claimed it gave Democrats a filibuster-proof Senate, the Minnesota seat still remained vacant. The Senate had 56 sitting Democratic members and 2 Independents. Technically, the Senate was two members short, but I'm counting Senator Kennedy even though he was at home ill because he did cast a vote in June. 59

May 15, 2009 Senator Robert Byrd was admitted to the hospital reducing the number of sitting Senators to 55 Democratic members and 2 Independents. 57

July 7, 2009 Al Franken (D) was sworn in after the election dispute over the Minnesota seat was decided in his favor. Senator Kennedy continued to recuperate at his home in Massachusetts and was unable to cast any more votes; Senator Byrd was still in the hospital. The Senate had 56 sitting Democratic members and 2 Independents. 58

July 21, 2009 Senator Byrd returned to the Senate making the count 59 seats. No Senator Kennedy.

Senator Kennedy died August 25, 2009.

The Kennedy seat was vacant from August 25 - September 24 when Paul G. Kirk was appointed to occupy his seat until the completion of a special election. The swearing-in of Kirk gave the Democrats a 60-seat majority.

                                                                                                                            Democrats had a 60 seat majority from September 24, 2009 thru February 4, 2010. 4 months; not 2 years!!

This does not account for the number of days Congress was not even in session during that time. If one subtracts the number of days Congress was out, the time that President Obama had a Democratic majority in Congress is further reduced by more than 30 days, or another full month.

Of a possible 94 legislative days during that period, the Senate was only in session for 67 days, while the House only labored for 54.

So even when the Dems had the Majority Republicans pretty much filabustered anything and everything they could

A simple majority is needed to pass legislation; therefore, your entire rant is irrelevant.

How does it feel to be irrelevant?

A 60 vote majority is NOT needed to pass legislation in the United States Senate.

A 60 vote majority is needed to break a filibuster; once the filibuster is broken, it cannot be be re-instituted for that particular piece of legislation. The legislation can then be brought to the floor for a straight up or down vote, where a simple majority will get it passed.

Clearly, you are an intellectual fraud. You are so mentally bankrupt that you are unable to grasp even the most simplest of concepts.

You've already exposed yourself as a fool and hypocrite, there's no arguing with either. You are the lesser man.

Until ALL the votes are counted, there is no winner. With an average of 48% of all states still counting things could shift the other way or lock things in. Either way don't pop open the bubbly yet.

They are the ones who will wake up in their mature years to find America to be a third world country. I see it as a judgement on this country. It's in the process of decline and it's inevitable now. It's going to become a third world country and it's the whites themselves to blame. Ultimately Hispanics will be the majority of this country anyway. It's going to decline. Other countries are more just and they are destined to rise up and over US. That's the way it's supposed to be.

The unwashed uneducated masses of this country will wake up one day and see what they have ultimately done to themselves. Sooner of later, the goose that lays the golden egg will die from starvation and the free bennies are going to stop. Your children and grandchildren ought to be proud of the stupid, stupid decisions you make and take so lightly thinking this is all a joke. My only hope is that Obama can't do too much more damage to this country in the next four years than he already has.

The word -JUST- means: Fair, impartial, honorable, righteous, moral.

Sue said: "Other countries are more just and they are destined to rise up and over US." She is saying that ultimately, America is in decline because we have elected an immoral man to lead us. He is not fair or impartial; he is neither honorable nor righteous. He is a deceitful liar, and a political manipulator. He will do and say anything to get elected; he did, and you bought into it. How does it feel to be a dupe?

He won by a slim margin; he does not have a popular mandate, and because of that, the people feel cheated.

America will become a third world nation, because third world peoples will soon become the voting majority in this country. What is it about this concept that is so difficult for Liberal/Democrat morons like you to wrap your pea sized brains around? All the ideals and traditions that we now value will eventually fall by the wayside, as these people take over as the majority.

They will continue to vote themselves more and more benefits that the middle and upper classes will be forced to pay for, until these two class structures no longer exist. How many years do you think will pass before this scenario becomes reality? Ten years? Twenty years? Thirty years?

Here's a tip: Learn to speak Spanish.

How much co-operation do you think that kind of asinine, childish behavior will inspire?

You, obviously have no background as a motivational speaker, but I bet you know how to pick your nose in front of friends and relatives; you just seem like that kinda guy.

We all voted for Obama and are so very happy- to us this was about the Supreme Court- and hopefully one of those justices who claimed that corporations are people will retire. The Koch brothers must be reeling- I hope they lost billions!!!!!

Soon, you may not have a house to live in. Your husbands and your sons-in-law may not have jobs to go to. You will find that Obamacare is becoming a drain on the economy, and is costing jobs by the tens of thousands, and by the time the Liberal/Democrats get around to fixing it, your lives will be ruined.

Just remember: Obama lied to you about who created the economic disaster. He lied to you about how he is going to fix it. He can't fix it, because he doesn't know how.

How does it feel to be duped, ladies?
