In costliest-ever Senate race, Warren beats Brown for Massachusetts seat

Democrat Elizabeth Warren wins the Senate seat in Massachusetts, defeating GOP incumbent Scott Brown.

In perhaps the most-watched Senate race in the 2012 election, Harvard professor Elizabeth Warren is the projected winner of the Massachusetts seat once held by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, NBC News reported.

Warren faced Republican Sen. Scott Brown, who swept to an upset victory in a January 2010 special election. Still, Brown was the underdog in the race against a Democrat known for her role in establishing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Brown — who referred to his opponent as "Professor Warren" at nearly every stop — suggested Warren had exploited her Native-American heritage to get jobs or get into schools. Warren said she heard about her Native-American roots from her mother and never use it to gain an advantage in her career.

“So much intensity in that race,” said NBC News' David Gregory, who moderated one of the debates between the candidates. “And don’t forget what Scott Brown represented. He was the vote against health care. He was the backlash that really represented and carried Republicans to the House and led the charge in the midterm election. He was also someone who tried as a mass moderate to work with the president and yet it wasn’t enough.”

The two candidates, The Associated Press reported, agreed to no outside money by super PACs and other independent groups then together spent $68 million on their campaigns, shattering all previous fundraising and spending records in Massachusetts.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell, Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams take a look at some key races at the state level across the U.S.

The Federal Election Commission reported Warren had raised $38.5 million in political donations as of mid-October, compared to Brown's $26.7 million. Brown's total doesn't include the $6 million left in his campaign account after the 2010 special election that propelled him into the Senate.

“Scott Brown would have had to win 20 percent of the Democratic vote to win against Elizabeth Warren,” said NBC News' Andrea Mitchell. “It was a very expensive, very hard fought race.”

Warren, 63, attempted to paint Brown, 53, as beholden to millionaires, billionaires and "big oil,” though the incumbent suggested he was an independent and moderate.

"I've kept my promise to be an independent voice. I put people ahead of politics and now I need your help to keep that independent tradition alive in Massachusetts," Brown said in his final ad, which features him embracing voters and driving his pickup truck. Still, he avoided any mention of Brown's party affiliation.

While Massachusetts is home to Republican challenger Mitt Romney — whose campaign Brown has endorsed  — the only image of a presidential candidate in the 60-second ad is Democrat Barack Obama, according to The Associated Press.

Scott Brown tells his supporters, "I don't want to see any sad faces out there. We ran a fantastic campaign." Watch his concession speech.

NBC News has projected the president as the winner in the state by a commanding margin over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Warren cast herself as a fighter for the middle class.

“This victory belongs to you. You did this,” Warren said at her election party on Tuesday. “For every family that has been chipped and squeezed and hammered, we’re going to fight for a level playing field and we’re going to put people back to work."

Both campaigns boasted about their efforts to get out the vote. Warren's camp hoped to knock on a million doors and make 2 million phone calls in the campaign's final days.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Elizabeth Warren's election is a great relief. She genuinely cares about people and stands up for the little guy. It's a shame that there are not many more like her in Congress.

Jennifer, looks like your guys chose to tell the truth to the wrong people: women, Latinos, Blacks -- and the large margin of victory in those groups tells what they thought of him. More troubling for you, truth or dare, is the fact that such an overwhelming percentage of the under-30 vote went to the President. You have driven out Olympia Snowe, Dick Lugar, Linc Chafee and anyone else who is a real Republican and you are left with an increasingly Strom-Thurmond-like Dixicrat core, circa 1948. It's only going to get worse. I would venture that the lies your guy tells next time better be a little different.

I'm very glad to see Warren win, but to be honest I'm disappointed that her opponent wasn't someone else. Brown's been a delightful surprise with his moderate stances, I can't think of many other Republicans who compromised and voted with the Democrats on numerous issues. Do I agree with all his stances? No, but he made good compromises.

I think it would have done Congress as a whole a lot better if Warren had annihilated another Republican far more worthy of losing their job job.

Absolutley Layton !!! President Obama, four more for 44 !!! And a GREAT win for the Democrats, with Liz Warren, too! Ted Kennedy's seat is once again occupied, by one of our own, whom, I'm sure will be able to accomplish a great deal! Congratulations Senator-elect Warren !!!!!

Now that this election is almost over, it is time for everyone to take an hour or two break, then get to www.faircampaignreform.us and join the Popular Amendment Movement to change how our elections are run and financed. You have time to get these constitutional amendments passed before the 2014/16 elections.

Petition for US Constitutional Amendment For Election Reform

We, the undersigned US citizens, duly registered voters in our respective states/territories, do hereby petition for our state to approve the following amendment to the United States Constitution by the method noted below.

      Election Reform:
      1. Abolish the Electoral College (Repeal Amendment 12)
      2. ONE NATIONAL primary date to be held on the Tuesday eight (8) weeks prior to the General Election day for Congressional offices and for the President. Candidate petitions must be filed with the local/state elections boards 60 days prior to the Primary Election date. Federal election petitions shall be uniform in every state and shall include a “contract with the voters” that spells out clearly what that candidate stands for on all issues that they may have to address in elected office. They shall be held accountable in court for breach of that contract if elected and any/all terms are not met.
      3. NO campaigning allowed for any elective federal office more than 60 days prior to the National Primary Date.
      4. NO campaign contribution shall be donated to any candidate of more than $200 from an individual or $500 maximum from a family (spouses/children living in the same household.) No donations shall be made to a candidate more than sixty days prior to the primary date. No candidate shall contribute from their own funds more than 60% of the total donations from other private individuals.
      5. NO campaign contribution from any PAC, corporation, union, non-profit organization, special interest group, etc. shall be allowed for any elected federal office.
      6. NO third party campaigning (separate PAC ads, corporate ads, etc.) for/against any candidate shall be allowed at any time during or before the election season.
      7. NO party conventions shall be held to select the presidential candidates. The selection must be done at the ballot box in the primary election.
      8. The One Man/One Vote Supreme Court ruling shall be enforced by this Amendment, namely that NO federal candidate selection shall be by any means other than the ballot box on Primary/General Election Dates.
      9. National Party Organizations shall NOT raise money for or donate to specific candidates of their party prior to the dates outlined above.
      10. PAC’s shall NOT be granted tax-exempt status by the IRS, and any non-profit organization who uses their funding for political purposes shall lose their tax-exempt status.
      11. All lobbyists shall be outlawed from influencing Congress at all times.

This amendment shall be approved ONLY by State Constitutional Conventions to be called within 90 days of this petition being submmitted to a state’s Secretary of State. A minimum of 25% of the registered voters in each state shall be required to further this petition to the respective Secretary of State.

I would add something to this. Amend the 14th Amendment. This is the one which states if you are born in this country, you are an automatic citizen. This Amendment was adopted to ensure the children of slaves would be considered US citizens. However, it has promoted people coming here to have children. There's a whole industry where they bring pregnant Chinese women here to have there children so they can have dual citizenship. The child's citizenship should be based on the country the mother comes from if not a US citizen.

        #4.1 - Wed Nov 7, 2012 11:58 AM EST

That should be a separate amendment as a person's right to citizenship is not directly related to how our elections and campaigning financing are conducted. The ECFR amendment is a direct result of Citizens United and was developed to change the way we elect our federal office holders (President and Congress) and how those campaigns are financed. Just as Congress is always adding non-germain issues to their legislation, this suggestion would be adding a non-germain issue.

          #4.2 - Wed Nov 7, 2012 6:12 PM EST

          Good luck with that nonsense.

The world is now involved with financing our elections. Get used to it.

Oh, and BTW, if you selectively fire Democrats from your work force you A. prove what a miserable, greedy scum sucking lowlife you are, B. it happens to be illegal. That is called worker discrimination and under a Republican administration nothing would be done to you, as the Right cares nothing for the common working man. A Democratic administration however will see to it that you are prosecuted for worker discrimination.

What a miserable excuse for humanity you are. It is fitting that you are a Republican. No Democrat could possibly be half as hateful as you.

The idea that increased taxes/costs would force you to down size your business, effectively reducing your income by your own choice, shows that you are not a successful business person anyhow. Voluntarily downsizing your business to reduce costs, and hopefully not reducing your sales and income, is something you should have done already, if you were a good business person. Your business should already be operating at maximum efficiency, maximizing profits, and any further reduction of staffing will lead to a reduction in production, and a reduction of income, otherwise you haven't been operating efficiently anyhow.

Warren, 63, attempted to paint Brown, 53, as beholden to millionaires, billionaires and "big oil," though the incumbent suggested he was an independent and moderate.

Yes . . . and she painted him damn good too!! . . . and of course he will say he was an independent and moderate. But he and his party are so accustomed to obstruction, cheating and lying, it seems they can't distinguish between the two anymore. There is no republican party anymore . . . I don't know what it's become actually.

But they are now reaping what they've sown. Perhaps now they'll realize what complete out-of-touch idiots they've been. First they let themselves get hi-jacked by a bunch of fanatical lunatics and second, they courted them . . . they "danced" and now they have to pay the fiddler. And it's not sitting well with the poor souls at all. You just have to know John Boehner (is that pronounced "boner"?) is most probably sitting at home crying to anyone who will listen.

And what about the Queen of the Lunatics, Michelle Bachman? . . . presently it's 50/50 -- which it's never, ever been -- it's a good sign for us really. Most of us in Minnesota would love to see her ousted. It's a foregone conclusion that she's got more than a few mental "issues" that need more attention than her political career.

Congratulations President Obama!! . . . your re-election was assured from the start . . . Robme's on TV at this moment looking a bit pale and gaunt, but I've got the volume off.

I'm still scratching my head as to how Scott Brown got elected.

Obama helped. The election was during the healthcare debate and Scotty's opponent left the state to pal around at a fund raiser with the insurance industry lobbyists that were writing the ACA. Many people stayed home rather than voting for her.

Now she can help Obama continue his anti-business agenda and push America further towards socialism.

I bet romney and Republican donors are fuming at the money they threw down the crapper. With both Brown in Ohio and Warren in mass. winning the two most outspent individuals this election cycle won their races. Money can buy you a lot of things but it cannot buy you an election because it cannot buy or rewrite the truth and what people actually believe. That is the referendum of this election. Time for Citizen's United to be overturned; the experiment is over, we have seen the damage that it has done to our election process and it is time to get rid of it.

Something that Republicans should learn is that when you spend 4 years bashing the President of the United States and then try to cozy up to Democrats and Independents by claiming you're his "friend" you are destined to lose. We saw Brown and McMahon try that tactic and both lost their elections. If you don't have enough principles to not be a weasel, or at least stick to you're guns when you are, then you risk putting off all voter groups including your own base. It just doesn't work and these two are the proof. That and the fact that they were terrible candidates to begin with.

As a dedicated leftie, I'm overjoyed at the President's and Elizabeth Warren's victories. I know it's the morning after, but I'm still a bit perturbed by the tone of some comments here, though. Can we drop the campaign rhetoric now and get real? Brown ran as he had to, the only way a Republican today can hope to win a Senate seat in the Bay State. He had no hope running as a South Carolina-style Dixiecrat -- he had to act like Leahy did in Vermont -- remember him? -- only on the other side. No he clearly did NOT have Warren's eloquence or brains, so even if she didn't have good liberal credentials (and she did), she seemed superior. But this vilification -- aw, come on -- it was a political campaign. Get over it.
