Updated at 3 a.m. ET: The Year of the Woman, 1992, was declared a triumph when the number of women in the Senate increased to six.

Now that Maggie Hassan has been elected as governor of New Hampshire, her state will assume the distinction of being the only state with a woman governor and an all-female Congressional delegation (two senators and one congresswoman). Washington state passed on a version of that baton on Tuesday night, as Gov. Chris Gregoire is retiring and the two candidates running for her position are men.
This year, the so-called "War on Women" energized Democrats to break a record for the number of women-held seats in the Senate. Nineteen women are in the Senate now, one more than the record set during the last Congress.
Among them are Harvard Professor Elizabeth Warren who became the first female senator of Massachusetts when she ousted Sen. Scott Brown; Tammy Baldwin, the first openly gay senator, who edged out former Governor Tommy Thompson in Wisconsin; and incumbent Claire McCaskill of Missouri, who beat Republican Todd Akin whose comments about rape were likely his demise.
No one disputes there remains a dramatic gender gap in Congress, where women make up just 17 percent of the House and the Senate. But women have slowly gained political power since 1991, when there were just two women in the Senate.
The new U.S. Senate will have a record number of women, ranging from the first Asian-American woman elected -- to consumer advocate and Harvard professor Elizabeth Warren. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.
NBC has also confirmed that Deb Fischer, a Republican, beat former Sen. Bob Kerrey in Nebraska, that Democrat Mazie Hirono in Hawaii beat Linda Lingle, becoming the Senate's first Asian-American woman.
Among incumbents, Sens. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Dianne Feinstein of California, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Maria Cantwell of Washington state won reelection by wide margins.
Also significant: Roughly half the 33 Senate races had a viable female candidate, more than ever before, according to NPR. That’s noteworthy because women less often seek out office or have more trouble raising campaign money.

“There’s no group that will be impacted more by this election than women,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said on her website. “Look at the bills the GOP House has passed this Congress: they voted to redefine rape, they voted to defund Planned Parenthood and Title X funding.”
Gillibrand herself easily won re-election over Republican Wendy Long.
There will be fewer female governors after this election, however. There are currently six women governors out of 50, and Govs. Chris Gregoire of Washington and Bev Perdue of North Carolina, both Democrats, are retiring.

Gregoire’s retirement means Washington state will lose its distinction of having a female governor and two female senators at the same time. Now that Democrat Maggie Hassan has been elected governor, New Hampshire will assume that distinction -- and then some: the state's governor and Congressional delegation is female, EMILY's List posted Tuesday night.
"We've always had a tradition of a lot of women running for office in New Hampshire," New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, a Republican, told NBC's Brian Williams on Tuesday.
Washington Sen. Patty Murray, a Democrat who was first elected in the Year of the Woman, served as the party’s chief recruiter, seeking out qualified women and capitalizing on the "war on women" in a speech she made at the Democratic convention in early September.
(Murray was not up for re-election this cycle.)

Murray recruited Baldwin and Shelley Berkley of Nevada, who was running against Dean Heller.
"When we started this campaign, no one, and I mean no one gave us a chance," said Murray on Tuesday night, according to the Huffington Post. "But we went out and built the best Senate campaigns in the history of the country. We recruited some of the highest quality candidates, including a record number of women. Democrats never let up and now we will retain our majority in the United States Senate."
McCaskill, the incumbent, was in danger of losing her seat until Akin said in a television interview that "legitimate" rape would not result in a pregnancy, because the female body “has ways to try to shut the whole thing down.”
His comments, decried as sexist and out of touch, returned McCaskill to the game.
In the month after Akin made those remarks, EMILY's List, which supports women candidates, raised $2.3 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. After another rape comment, made by another GOP candidate, EMILY’s List raised another $631,000.
In New York, Gillibrand made women’s issues a theme in her re-election campaign. One ad opens with her pointing out that she is one of the only female senators with young children.
Her ad concludes: “I’m Kirsten Gillibrand and I approve this message, because if 51 percent of Congress were women, we wouldn’t be debating contraception, we would be debating jobs and the economy.”

With that being said, As I pointed out in other posts Pigotry, and as you yourself have noted with the electoral college and popular vote, the Electoral College needs to go bye bye. I voted for George Bush in 2000, was happy to see him win, but at the same time could not endorse his presidency because he lost that popular vote. In my opinion, as sometimes as unpopular as it is, a leader of the people should be the one endorsed by the majority of the people. In 2000, Gore won the popular vote by over 540,000. That is in my estimation the disenfranchisement of 540,000 voters, American Citizens, who are effected by the decisions of someone they did not endorse, and whose votes literally meant nothing. It appears the same thing is happening again this election year, only the disenfranchisement will be considerably larger, well over 1 million people will essentially be told your voice means nothing.
In looking at the short comings of the electoral college, one thing is perfectly clear. All votes are not the same. The voices of those that work, pay taxes, and sacrifice for the country mean absolutely nil. That is the true travesty of the electoral college system, in which truthfully, the voice of the majority means nothing. Whether or not I support Obama, or Bush (back in 2000), does not in anyway diminish the illegitacy of thier presidencies. And for apparently 2 presidential elections to be decided on something less than the true voice of the people (the popular vote), in the last 4 elections, it is definitely a problem that needs fixing. And at this point, the only real solution is to do away with the electoral college and restore that power of the governed to the governed.
And I know, some will say "sour milk" and some will say the electoral college is good, and it has been around since the inception of the constitution, but we also need to take heed of the fact that since the constitution was conceived, our country and the technology has changed tremendously. We no longer rely on horse and mail to send information, and even though the country is more vast than what it once was, we as a people, should retain that right as the intent of our Declaration of Independence so inclined, "... to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." If there was any such time to return the power of government back to the governed, these last 4 elections, should serve as the call for action, and the disenfranchisement of Hundreds of Thousands of our fellow citizens, who's voices are silenced by an electoral system that neither serves the governed or is reflective of that desire.
The vote is still being counted, but if indeed the popular vote favors Romney, I have to agree with you.

Of equal importance, tonight Hillary Clinton was also elected President of the United States, to serve from 2016 through 2024...and there is no force on earth, none, which can preclude her ascendency.

@Ted - at the point I posted my comment, Romney had a 1.6 Million Popular Vote lead, but the Electoral College Predictions had him winning the election. Regardless, we have seen the short comings of the Electoral College System, and I would like to point those out again for those that may not fully understand the full implications of that system.
there have been 4 occasions where a President was elected, but lost the popular vote:
In 1824, John Quincy Adams was elected president despite not winning either the popular vote or the electoral vote. Andrew Jackson was the winner in both categories.
In 1876, Rutherford B. Hayes won the election (by a margin of one electoral vote), but he lost the popular vote by more than 250,000 ballots to Samuel J. Tilden.
In 1888, Benjamin Harrison received 233 electoral votes to Grover Cleveland’s 168, winning the residency. But Harrison lost the popular vote by more than 90,000 votes.
In 2000, George W. Bush was declared the winner of the general election and became the 43rd president, but he didn’t win the popular vote either. Another issue, worth pointing out, is it is possible to become President of the United States (all 50 states) by merely winning in 11 of 12 states, entirely loosing by a 100 - 0 popular vote count in every other state outside the Big 12. The big 12 states, thus have more say in the NATIONAL Election than those in 38 other states (accounting for more than 2/3s of the national population), thus it is possible for a candidate to not get a single person's vote -- not one -- in 39 states or the District of Columbia, yet be elected president by wining the popular vote in just 11 of these 12 states:
California
New York
Texas
Florida
Pennsylvania
Illinois
Ohio
Michigan
New Jersey
North Carolina
Georgia
Virginia
Issue # 3 with the current election system is the electoral college selection process. "Electors" are selected under a "pledge" system in which the elector will cast thier Electoral College vote according to the popular vote of thier state. However, A faithless elector is one who casts an electoral vote for someone other than the person pledged or does not vote for any person. Only 24 states have laws to punish faithless electors. Thus, a "legal" coup is possible to hijack an election. In the past, Since the founding of the Electoral College, there have been 156 faithless Electors. 71 of these votes were changed because the original candidate died before the day on which the Electoral College cast their votes. Three of the votes were not cast at all as three Electors chose to abstain from casting their Electoral vote for any candidate. The other 82 Electoral votes were changed on the personal initiative of the Elector.
Sometimes Electors change their votes in large groups, such as when 23 Virginia Electors acted together in 1836. Many times, however, these Electors stood alone in their decision.
Issue #4 becomes one that truly should make people aware, and ultimately rally calls for our election system overhaul. Specifically campaign contributions, special interest groups, and lobbyists buying candidates and influencing elections. Large Contributions, in many people's estimation, are equivilent to bribes and corruption. One only needs to look at thier "candidate" and look at thier "fundraising". All too often we see "OUR CANDIDATE" hosting a $25k a plate fundraiser. Now honestly, what NORMAL hardworking American could afford in many cases a full year's worth of salary to attend such an event? How many times do we see "endorsements" for a candidate coming from a Special Interest or Lobby - thus bringing the candidate "promised voter gold" in exchange for a "favorable voting record" on that lobby's interest.
5th, Most states use a winner-take-all system, in which the candidate with the most votes in that state receives all of the state's electoral votes. This arrangement is said to to provide candidates an incentive to pay the most attention to states without a clear favorite, such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida in 2004 and 2008 and 2012. The rationale for this is unclear, however, as recent elections have clearly indicated a trend by candidates to focus on swing states and those with the highest number of electoral votes. Thus, "Safe" states and states with low "electoral college votes", are often ignored or taken for granted, and thereby diminish the voice of the population there. In an Popular Vote system, there would be no such thing as a "Swing State", as the importance of each individual vote would warrant at least a "visit" and campaigning by the candidates.
6th, Except in closely fought swing states, voter turnout is largely insignificant due to entrenched political party domination in most states. The Electoral College decreases the advantage a political party or campaign might gain for encouraging voters to turn out, except in those swing states. In States like California for example, which traditionally votes Democrat or in States like Texas that typically vote Republican, voters of the opposite party are at a disadvantage, essentially being told by the PARTY CAMPAIGNING SYSTEM, via the Electoral College, thier votes mean nothing.
7th, It is a distinct disadvantage for a 3rd Party. In practice, the winner-take-all manner of allocating a state's electors generally decreases the importance of minor parties. We see this as effectively true with "Independents" having to caucus with either the Republican Party or the Democratic Party. Likewise, Independents are effectively ruled out of Cabinet Positions, Key Senate or House Committees, and are NEVER in a position to Chair such committees.
8th, the system is overly complex. It shouldn't be a question of "calling races" where votes haven't even been counted. Likewise, for an election to be called when not all the votes are counted disenfranchises voters from all walks of life, in all states. Having to select electoral college representatives, to enacting laws to force electors to cast ballots according to the will of their state, to the numbers game of "appealing to this minority", or endorsements coming from that union or this governor, and even down to the sheer economics of "running EC numbers" and such, a Popular Vote is about as straight forward as it gets.
And lastly, The Electoral College System encourages partisanship. It encourages divisiveness. It encourages gridlock. It fosters animosity. And truth be told, it doesn't serve the voice of the American Voter, when the American Voter is being lied to, mislead, or even intimidated by political parties in which the "selection" of our country's leader is often described as "the lesser of two lying, corrupt evils." Without the electoral college system, truthfully there would be no "need" for a political party system, which is truly what we were forewarned about in George Washington's Farewell Address.
Now whether or not you agree or disagree, when you have a "system" in place that does not provide the equal voice in voting (government) as we are supposed to have by constitutional right, and as a basis in our declared independence, then it is a system that has become obsolete, and that power of the American Voter needs to be restored. It would certainly remove the influence of corporations, lobbyists, and special interests that engage in the buying the election with all of that "campaign contributions" in both money, advertsing, and spreading of divisive rhetoric we see today.

As a former Republican, I voted for George W. Bush the first time and against him second term. The sad fact of the matter is that, no matter what Republicans said, when they had the WH and both houses of Congress, they spent like nobody ever has in the history of the US. They were also hypocrites, having done everything they accused Democrats of doing during this campaign:
buying votes with government largesse - what do you think was behind George W. Bush's emphasis on low/no downpayment mortgages? Republicans hoped to convert millions of illegal immigrants and welfare recipients into loyal Republican voters. Unfortunately, they trashed the economy (along with the rest of the world's economies) with this idiocy.
government corruption and croney capitalism - Enron, Halliburton, Constellation Energy Group... the list is endless. Many have labeled Bush's administration as a "culture of corruption".
communist, socialist, blah, blah, blah - China is a communist country. The man that Republicans nominated as their candidate for president made much of fortune by exporting American jobs to China. The croney capitalists who benefited so much under Bush's administration and contributed vast sums of money to the Republican cause hoping to do so again under Romney have done more to strengthen communism and weaken the US than any foe of the US has in the last couple of centuries.
It is time for the Republican party to reflect, regroup and start working for this great nation, not against it.

Unless the Republican Party ditches its policy of first and foremost attempting to suppress the rights of their fellow Americans -- those who don't happen to be male and affluent or male and white -- they will become irrelevant. Which would be a very, very bad thing. We need a balance of ideas, a choice. A political party largely made up of dinosaurs, an anachronism harking back to the 1950s, presents no choice. Thus it loses elections, and the country loses a logical, rational opposing view.
Wake up, Republicans! Move into the 21st century. Drop the paternalism, the colonial mentality, stop trying to force conservative "morals" on the rest of the country. Join the mainstream. Stop catering to the fringe element, join the discussion. Logic, not dogma. Most Americans sit (ideologically) pretty close to the middle.

What helped female candidates was female candidates. If you are smarter, care more, do more, and fight harder then it does not matter what your gender might be. Elizabeth Warren got elected to the Senate. Wahooo. Of the whole election she was my favorite candidate, and I am from Pennsylvania. It looks like an awful lot of us are starting to really look past gender and just pick the right person these days. I'm in!
