Candidates travel to key locations on Election Day

After over a year of campaigning and debating, and $984 million invested in presidential campaign advertising, Americans went to polling places across the nation Tuesday to render their verdict on President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney visits Pennsylvania and Ohio before heading to Boston to wait for results. NBC's Jay Gray reports.

Showing the intensity of the race, which polls show as extremely close, Romney and his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin made last-minute Election Day appearances in two of the most hotly contested battlegrounds: Ohio and Pennsylvania. Ryan arrived midafternoon in Richmond, Va., for his last 2012 campaign appearance.

Romney told supporters at a call center outside Pittsburgh that they "don't need to be disparaging of the other guy. The president has run a strong campaign, I believe he is a good man and wish him well, and his family well. He is a good father and has been a good example of a good father, but it is time for a new direction. It is a time for a better tomorrow."

Governor Romney plans to hit two more states on Election Day after squeezing in five events in four battleground states on the eve of the vote. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Vice President Joe Biden also touched down in Cleveland to make an Election Day visit and to thank campaign volunteers. At one point, the Romney, Ryan and Biden planes were all simultaneously parked on the tarmac in Cleveland – a final symbolic expression of the importance of the state’s 18 electoral votes in the race to get to 270.

Aboard Romney’s chartered plane, his chief strategist Stuart Stevens reacted to Biden’s Ohio stop by musing about Democrats who claimed the GOP ticket was displaying "panic” by campaigning today.

NBC's Chuck Todd offers a guide of what to watch on election night as the polls close and reveals what possible scenarios could play out in the Electoral College.

Early Tuesday morning, the Obama campaign sent out a text message urging supporters to pick up the phone to woo another voter for the president: “Will you make one call for President Obama? Reply CALL and we'll send you the name & phone number of one voter in a key state who needs to hear from you.”

At their stop at a Wendy’s in Cleveland, Romney ordered a quarter-pounder with no cheese along with chili and a baked potato, while Ryan replied to a reporter’s question about how he felt by saying: "I'm running on fumes."

Obama took time out from the frenzied last-minute campaigning and vote forecasting to play a pickup basketball game with friends and staffers at a court in Chicago.

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) and his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) smile while greeting workers at a GOP Victory Center in Richmond Heights, Ohio, on November 6.

The president was also scheduled to do interviews with radio stations in media markets in most of the battleground states: in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Milwaukee, Wis.; Denver, Colo.; Cleveland and Cincinnati, Ohio; Las Vegas, Nev.; Miami and Tampa, Fla., and – reaching voters in the vital northern Virginia suburbs, a station in Washington, D.C. In 2008, Obama carried all seven of the states in which his radio interviews were airing on Tuesday.

Romney also turned to Election Day radio interviews to make one last appeal to voters, with appearances on stations in Ohio, Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Va.

In a morning drive-time interview with Jimmy Barrett on WRVA in Richmond, Romney said, “We’re bouncing around a bit – just going to polls and saying ‘hi’ to people and making sure we leave nothing in the locker room. We’re putting it all out there on the field.”

Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and Joe Biden vote on Election Day, along with thousands of Americans. NBC's Leanne Gregg reports.

He added, “I can’t imagine an election being won or lost by let’s say a few hundred votes, and you spent your day sitting around. I mean, you’d say to yourself, ‘Holy Cow, why didn’t I keep working?”

Whether voter turnout  -- especially Democratic turnout -- matches that of 2008, when Obama was swept into the White House with a popular vote plurality of more than 9.5 million votes, will be crucial to Tuesday’s outcome

In Ohio, Secretary of State Jon Husted reported that nearly 1.8 million absentee ballots had been cast, surpassing the 2008 presidential election figure.

And in Florida Tuesday morning, Secretary of State Ken Detzner predicted a record turnout, saying as many as 9 million people overall could vote in his state. Nearly 8.4 million people voted in Florida in 2008.

Detzner said he was not concerned that the long lines during the eight-day early vote period would dampen enthusiasm Tuesday.

In another key state, Colorado, as of Monday night, more than 1.7 million voters had cast early ballots. In 2008, 2.4 million voted in the state.

At stake Tuesday was not only the presidency but control of the Senate and the House of Representatives. If Romney wins and Republicans can score a net gain of only three seats in the Senate they would become the majority party and control the agenda. If Obama wins the Republicans would need a net gain of four seats to win the Senate. The GOP is expected to retain control of the House.

NBC News’s Carrie Dann, Garrett Haake, and James Novogrod contributed to this story.

Ummm... I don't know if you heard, but President Obama touched down at O'Hare around midnight last night and hasn't left the state since!

KNOCK off the false equivalences, it's Team Willard who are running around with their hair on fire!

NO worries, the President's fire-wall will hold...

I seriously don't get all of the "hitting the campaign trail" of the R's on the day of the election. I don't recall it being done in the past. I really do prefer when candidates go back to their cities, as have the President and VP and surround themselves with their supporters and family while awaiting the results.

The flying around stuff ... just smells a wee bit of desperation.

That's what I heard. It is my understanding that President Clinton will or already has done one last event in PA. I believe that is what I heard. Some of the political people were talking last night and they say they've never seen a candidate for pres and vp out on election day. Some thought that a last ditch effort to assuage their own fears. I would agree with that!

WCA-

Romney is a class act. That is why I voted for him.

I agree that Romney is probably a nice guy, but I wouldn't go so far as to call him a 'class act'.

Romney repeatedly allowed blatantly misleading ads to run with his approval - the worst being the auto bailout ads and the welfare ads.

Romney lied his way through at least two of the debates, and had no qualms about changing his position then lying about it.

Romney also associated with people like Donald Trump and John Sununu, who took the very low road in their criticisms of our president.

I don't think a 'class act' would be so deceptive and dishonest, or allow those kind of people to speak for him.

Totally agree with you, TNSEVOL, but then again, the moral compass of some here are really pretty low. Would a class act buy a company only to run it to the gills in debt and then strip it of all its assets, strip pensions, fire thousands of people, and then toss the company aside as if it were yesterday's trash, and then all the while sit there counting up how much money he made and where next he would stash it, out of the country that allowed him to behave in such a manner? No. That is not a class act. That is not even human.

Why do CONS care about what BO promised anyway?

Sorry that "NoNeck" McCain didn't fulfill his promise to the CONS.

Do CONS think we are going to believe more BS promises from the GOP?

When was the last time they did what they ran on?

What has the GOP done for America in the last 40 years?

Do CONs have a GOP list like mine above? Good luck with that. IT DOESN'T EXIST.

EVERYONE knows the GOP has ZERO accomplishments.

Only brainwashed morons with dollar signs in their eyes ($) ($) vote for the GOP.

The GOP always runs on LIES and MONEY.

They BUY and STEAL votes.

The GOP cannot EARN votes.

They can't because they do not have a record to earn them.

The GOP is made up of CON artists

The GOP is in bed with the super rich like the Koch brothers.

Finally! Election day! The stock market is booming today! My Cayman accounts are just over flowing with gains. Ah the smell of victory is so sweet. I know that the voter suppression goals will be achieved and finally we’ll get our country back.
To Romney/Ryan,
I can’t tell you how excited I am that the two of you will be running this country soon. We’ve been knocked down and we have not performed to our potential. There is so much more we can do in this country and I know with your leadership we’ll become once again the greatest nation in the world. I want to be the first to congratulate you on your victory. I’d like to suggest a few things that I’d like to see within the 1st 100 days you’re in office.
1. I want to see my capital gains tax rate reduced if not eliminated.
2. I want to see the corporate tax rate reduced to 20 – 21%. I figure if we get rid of welfare programs and Agencies like FEMA we can meet that rate. I need you to come through on that so that I can start expanding my new factories in Taiwan. The workers there are already complaining that the cots are not plush enough and they want feather pillow cases so I got to pay for that to keep their productivity up. I don’t need a riot on my hands like what we saw from the Apple factory.
3. Please preserve and protect the existing business relocation deductions for companies that move business overseas.
4. REPEAL Obamacare! I have my 2013 revenue corporate earning projections based on the savings I’ll be making by dropping crazy benefits like healthcare to my US workers. These folks can hit the ER if their sick.
5. I want you to please make sure that we do voucherize Medicare and restore the old prices of prescription medicine to seniors so that we can get rid of some them. I mean we know what a drag they are to the economy..Always walking around at the local malls then falling asleep on the bench in front of JC Penny’s. It’s embarrassing.
6. When seniors receive their allotted amount of money for their health care they should receive a complimentary copy of P-90X with their life alert necklace.
7. Please install a Supreme Court Justice that will overturn Roe V Wade. I want to make sure men can control what women do and don’t do as a result of passions from the bedroom. This will restore core biblical principles of male authority in the house hold.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Blue horse shoe loves Romney/Ryan. Make these 7 things happen so we can restore our core conservative beliefs and save this country from the sins of the past 4 years. If these 7 requests can be made then these are going to be great times for the “haves”. I’m already very privileged and prosperous and with your help we can protect my wealth and ensure that none of those leaching 47 percenters get their grubby hands of what is mine. I can say congrats now instead of tomorrow cuss we know how this thing is going to end…I just think it’s funny that people really think their vote will count – wink wink future President.
Go Mitt Romney/Ryan 2012

White Collar Auto:

we in the Northeast really feel the love from "Class Act Romney". It was so wonderful of him to arrange that Red Cross Food Drive for Sandy victims in Ohio, a state known for its close maritime border with the Atlantic Ocean. And the fact that the Red Cross isn't accepting food donations? Not a problem. As Romney said, the donations are being shipped to "I think New Jersey", so we can trust they'll get there. And I can't believe the vicious rumors that this was all just a photo opp, and he didn't give a rat's you-know-what about the victims. So what if his team spent $5,000 on food; they just did that to make sure that the unwashed masses would be able to take credit for handing him the food; that photo opp was actually for them! Real class act, that Romney.

Ticked off it was 25% by 8:30 AM and 70- 75% by 3:00 PM. The Board of elections had to send a second shipment of ballots to a number of locations in the Republican areas of Hamilton county. Linetime is 90 minutes.

6 other republican dominated counties have also reported record voting and several have also had to ship more ballots to precincts. Among those are Warren (NE Ohio), several counties adjacent to Hamilton (including Butler - BIG).

In Virginia, reports in the coal mining region and military regions are very heavy, and most of Virginia are UP.

In New Hampshire, record voting is being experienced, but no word on what areas are dominating.

Florida I-4 corridor is also heavy, but this was trending to Romney. I think they said Miami-Dade (Obama) and Naples (Romney)

Also to note is the money that was invested by Bain WASNT MINE OR THE OTHER TAX PAYERS MONEY, BUT YOURS WAS. In addition the money lost by Bain wasnt in the HALF BILLIONS that OBAMA COST US. Defend that if you can with facts. Also dont forget that all the failure of companies were and are STILL major contributers to Odumbos campaign.

Early exit polls for VA has Romney carrying 59% of independents and 38% Obama. It has turned around 180 from 2008.

      JC,

@ sarah Bain was investing in companies to make a living, your slow-friend invested in companies for a photo-op.

That doesn't change the fact that technically, Obama had a better track record. Also, I didn't know you were a close personal friend of his, that you could speak to his inner motivations.

You again lose because you fail at understanding that private business makes the jobs in this country not a mandate by a failure of a president.

Also, if private businesses create jobs and not government, why all the bitching about how Obama hasn't created any? In fact, he hasn't raised corporate taxes, or changed anything that was in place under Bush. The only change in that area is the ACA. However, the record of stagnate wages/job creation, with simultaneous record corporate profits and increases in the personal wealth of the 1% has been a 30 year trend.

Why aren't your job creators creating jobs? It's not like you can blame a 30 year trend on brand new legislation. And you said it yourself, it's the responsibility of private businesses.

Also to note is the money that was invested by Bain WASNT MINE OR THE OTHER TAX PAYERS MONEY, BUT YOURS WAS

Yeah, and my tax money has gone to fighting two decade long wars. You don't hear me whining about paying taxes though.

Shocker, W. Virginia and S. Carolina went Red. No, N. Carolina hasn't gone either way yet. And only 2% of Virginia is in. That means 60% of the 2% counted.

Is this your first election??? And you do realize that even if Obama doesn't win, me and Feisty don't have to leave the country, right?

Sure, JC, runaway. You do realize that merely saying something doesn't make it the truth, right? And you didn't counter a single point.

See that little 1% under the candidates numbers, in each state. That's the percent of the vote they've actually counted.

That means only 1% of the vote in OH has even been counted.

Do you seriously not understand that?

I am thankful the female vote is showing up and breaking for Obama, and he got a boost from a PuertoRican contingent in Florida that may help turn it blue (woohoo!). Gohmert may hold, maybe even Bachmann and Allen West, but overall it's looking to be a pretty good night for Democrats.

                A column worth reading today...

On Election Day, Pause To Marvel At Democracy

Let's all stop for moment, catch our breath and take in the magnitude of what is happening. Before we jump from campaign frenzy to post-election celebration -- or disappointment -- we should not let Election Day pass without pausing to really absorb what an extraordinary thing democracy is.

The idea that the people have a right to decide who will govern them, that the men and women who want to become president have to undergo a grueling, months-long job application process, engaging with citizens, trying to persuade everyone, rich and poor, young, old, men, women -- everyone -- that they deserve the position, is a truly remarkable reality.

No matter how much we are manipulated, misled, sold, bought, buffeted, lifted up or let down We the People must not forget we are ultimately responsible for those who lead us. Voting today was deeply satisfying - regardless of who wins.

Election day prediction contest. Let's see who predicts the winner, the winner percentage of the vote, the winner's electoral votes and the time the networks call the election. I'll say:

Obama wins 51-48, 332 electoral votes (yes, I'm predicting VA and FL go to Obama, go big or go home) and the election will be called when the polls close on the west coast, 11 PM EST.

What has to be a worry for Obama is the large voter turnout. Quite often it can be seen as a protest vote and the governing party is often the loser. I hope this isn't true.

See what a fun loving and spirited bunch we are! I never see "the other side" having the fun and fun loving back and forth that most of us have with each other.

Perhaps that is because we live in reality and don't have to rely on cyber friends and a virtual world to entertain us and "have fun with" and support us and our views. We have real people that we know and can touch for that and lives "beyond the keyboard and monitor".

3 patron' margaritas straight up (no salt) with lunch...

Bottle of Pinot Noir and a bottle of Dalmore "1263 King Alexander III" at the ready.

Glad you aren't getting to "enjoy" that opiated haze today and are instead free to imbibe, opine and amuse here...

Low turnout on the UWS of Manhattan, it only took us 15 minutes from entry to exit.

In 2008, we waited outside on line for over half an hour.

I don't know which side I fall on but I sure don't want to be a pompous ass...HINT!

Talk - clearly you can't understand that some of us have made real friends over the last few months. Friends we see and share fun with. We all have our other friends too as well as family. We're blessed to have all of them in our lives.

I don't have any "cyber" friends. That is too much like Facebook for me - ugh!

Whoever wins, it sounds like you'll need one- and a large bottle of tomato juice to wash them down. . .

On the other hand, if they're cyber drinks, your head will be fine in the morning. If not- my love to your liver. . .

Got the beverages, order the pizza, and have my favorite slippers on.

Voting was so easy today, no need of a id, just sign my name, fill out the paper ballot, watch it go into the optical scanning machine, get my I voted sticker. Wave to the five pollworkers who are all my neighbors and walk backed home.

the voter id amendment on our ballot will not be passed. all the seniors are against it. they do not want to have to find a birth certificate some where when they have been voting a certain way all their lives and have all been registered for decades.

The ensuing hangover will be spent muttering thank god for 4 more for 44.

Enjoy the evening all - tomorrow promises to be a new day.

Northstar, are you from California? Your experience mirrors mine this morning.

Being SoCal, the poll workers were of Hispanic, Armenian, European, and Korean origins. The voters reflected a similar diversity.

                  We are all Americans.

Also being SoCal, it is beautiful and warm out - ribs going on the grill in a couple hours!

Hi fellow libs! I live in a very Republican county in Colorado and hubby and I are getting together with our liberal friends who were transplanted here from NY - for an Election Day party to celebrate the re-election of Our President! Got green chili burritos, chips and salsa, and a case of Corona beer all lined up for the party.

Wish I could get together with all you guys for the celebration - the bigger the party the better, but I'll be there in spirit!

Well, well, well, Willard and his dishonest rich boys club are going to lose--and they know it. I is a shame, the republican party could not come up with some one better than Wiillard Mitt Romney. When will they learn about integrity, character, and compassion? When will they learn what leadership is about? Instead the republicans try to rig the polls, supress the vote, and intimidate others. Where is their honor? The truth is the rich boys club think they push us all around with there outside groups, and billions of dollars.

Well, not today--not today. Stay in line for Obama and Obama will win the day and another four years for us all. Stay the Line!! Vote OBAMA!

My best laugh came from a friend of mine who was a Blue Dog Democrat in North Carolina.

In 1994, he was running for reelection, a steep, uphill climb he eventually lost. At a family gathering, he was asking all his relatives for their votes, when his grandfather spoke up.

"son," he said, "I recall I did vote for a democrat once. I was on a jury, and we voted to convict the sonofa@%#*%".

My buddy knew, then, that all was lost. . .

Just to refresh your memory, Romney/Bain took almost every company they took over into Bankruptcy and stole the pension funds. The few that survived either had major pay cuts for employees or their jobs sent over seas. As to the Olympics, having congress earmark over 70 Million to Bail him out. If Romney wins (and I know he wont) who is he going to get a Bailout from when he takes the US into Bankruptcy. His math does not work!!!!

Oh except Jon Huntsman. He's a class act and actually COULD have done better. He's home with his family after voting for Obama!

Michele and Marcus are probably at their home in Stillwater MN which is now in the 4th district. She is running in the 6th district which has new boundaries which have excluded her town.

So she cannot even vote for herself today!!!!

Thanks, Layton! I am in an awesome mood today, I voted to reelect our president first thing this morning at 7:15am AST. My hand actually shook a little as I started to color in the circle. I made sure not one speck of ink was outside the circle. I wanted to make sure that my vote was very clear! I walked out with a spring in my step and a smile on my face! I have never felt this good about voting for president as I did today.

Bachmann was still polling a bit ahead but is in trouble. Keep in mind Patricia, that new district leans further right than her old one.

Graves has made inroads, however. This is one that we will have to wait and see. I wouldn't make a guess on it.

I'm tired of MN being embarrassed by the woman. Hope she loses.

that was wonderful of you to support Graves.

Bill Clinton was in campaigning for Graves with a speech last night in the distrcit.

The hope is the the indepnedents will continue to break for Graves, but right now Bachmann is ahead by about 3 or points.

Rick Santorum robo-called me to urge me to vote Republican today. The fact that I haven't been a Republican for over 4 years seems to have escaped them. If this is their GOTV operation, no wonder they are going to lose here in Pa.

Romney gave NO interviews for the last 28 days save last night on MNF and that was no interview. He and Ryan even turned down Bill-O and FOX.

A member of the New Black Panther Party who was charged with voter intimidation in the 2008 election for standing outside a Philadelphia polling site was back Tuesday morning – in an official capacity.

Jerry Jackson, who was charged in the 2008 case along with Minister King Samir Shabazz, but later saw charges dropped by the Department of Justice, was seen early Tuesday outside a North Philadelphia voting site wearing the group’s trademark black beret, combat-style uniform and heavy boots. Fox News confirmed he is a designated poll watcher.

Get out and read the great book by Robert Draper. "Do Not Ask What Good We Do." This book goes into great details about the Tea Begger "Conspiracy" of Janruary 20, 2009. The whole GOP/RNC Congress needs to be voted out tonight. GOP/RNC "Conspirators" like "Bonehead Boehner," and "Crazy Cantor" will not 'compromise' at all. The Tea Beggers made thier "Blood Oath" to suppress the vote, disrupt the economy, kill all Jobs Bills, and kill all of the President's Budgets. Get out and vote America!

The reason you saw Biden in Cleveland today is that the Columbus Dispatch showed Romney up by +2% today. The turn out in the Democratic stronghold of Cleveland is good but not to the record pace of 2008. Also, that huge Republican turn out which Democrats said would not be as high as predicted in southern Ohio is turning out to be much higher than even Republicans predicted. Souces out of Cincinnati are saying the Republican turn out was huge.

                          Oil Claims by Obama
---Oil Imports have been declining since 2005 (Contradicts Obama):
“U.S. dependence on imported oil has declined since peaking in 2005. This trend is the result of a variety of factors including a decline in consumption and shifts in supply patterns.1 The economic downturn after the financial crisis of 2008, improvements in efficiency, changes in consumer behavior and patterns of economic growth, all contributed to the decline in petroleum consumption. At the same time, increased use of domestic biofuels (ethanol and biodiesel), and strong gains in domestic production of crude oil and natural gas plant liquids expanded domestic supplies and reduced the need for imports.”

                          Feisty Redhead Roselle, IL

It has been a long, winding journey and we have at last reached our final destination!

After all the lies, cheating, trickery & fraud from Team Willard, in a little over 12 hours, President Obama will be elected to a well-deserved 2nd term!

I only have one question, when did it become acceptable as Americans to make it more difficult to exercise our basic freedom of the right to VOTE?

Watching Americans stand in lines hours long to make their voices heard gives me HOPE!

Remember if you are already in line before the doors close, they cannot turn you away!

Keep this number handy; 1-866- OUR VOTE!

Whatever you do, do NOT leave the line... YOUR VOTE counts!

                          Let's get it done!

                          4 MORE FOR 44!!!! "No"

                          "I Told You So"

I lol@U, fister, the journey is just beginning, sorry no more 4ward 44 ,!,

"The heavy lifting for America starts on January 20th 2013.

Enjoy the holidays, sleep it off till inauguration day. At that point, President Willard Mitt Romney "Will" Graciously accept the privilege of serving the American people as the leader of these United States Of America and the free world. then it is time for America 's Renaissance, leaving behind the dark age of the last unsuccessful liberal experiment.

This 'mad' scientist Barack Hussein Obama will be lucky, if he stays out of prison, but effectively he has already imprisoned himself in his own arrogance... Please leave quietly barry, "you are fired".... .....

For once can't we, the people, do the foot work for a presidential candidate that makes the exploratory committee and party machinery obsolete? 'no matter who wins, voters lose'
