Obama, Romney cap election eve with rallies in states that launched them

Updated 11:27 a.m. - President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney returned Monday evening to the states that launched their respective bids for the presidency, wrapping their campaigning ahead of Election Day.

Joined by their spouses, Obama returned to Iowa -- where he won the 2008 caucuses -- and Romney stopped in New Hampshire -- where he won the primary at the beginning of this year -- to bring to an end their long, hard battle over whom Americans would select as their president for the next four years.

"I've come back to Iowa one more time to ask for your vote," a visibly emotional Obama told a crowd near his first campaign office in Des Moines. "Because this is where our movement for change began. Right here."

"It's out of my hands now," he said. "It's up to you."

Mitt Romney holds a rally at Orlando Sanford international airport in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 5, 2012.

Both Obama and Romney seemed to drink in the adulation of their supporters in the closing hours of the campaign, before voters would take to the polls in fewer than 12 hours to render their verdict on the election.

"This is a special moment for Ann and for me, because this is where our campaign began," Romney said to a crowd in New Hampshire. "Your primary vote put me on the path to win the Republican nomination, and tomorrow your votes and your work here in New Hampshire will help me become the next president of the United States."

The stops mostly concluded the campaigning of the 2012 election. Romney was set to make stops Tuesday in Cleveland and Pittsburgh, and Republican vice presidential nominee would also stop in Cleveland and Richmond. Those stops, though, were billed as less formal than the giant, raucous rallies that have dominated the candidates' schedules in the closing days of the campaign.

Obama and Romney capped what was a "barnburner" final day of campaigning, as he and Romney hop-scotched across the country to make stops in the states on which they're relying tomorrow.

Ryan launches campaign 'barnburner' in Obama-leaning Nevada

So far, more than 4.5 million Floridians have already voted, sometimes after waiting in hours-long lines. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Romney made a four-state tour through Florida, Virginia and Ohio – states that are critical to his hopes of becoming president – before concluding in New Hampshire, the cornerstone of Romney’s victory in the GOP presidential primary earlier this year, and the state neighboring Massachusetts, where Romney served as governor and his campaign is now headquartered.

Both sides agree, winning Colorado could be key. A recent NBC/WSJ/Marist poll had the race tied at 48 percent each. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

The president spent the day visiting Wisconsin, Iowa and Ohio -- the states composing his Midwestern "firewall," where he's sought to build an advantage over Romney.

Their schedules, coming on the heels of a jam-packed weekend of campaigning across the country by both the candidates and their surrogates, was nothing short of a “barnburner,” as Ryan put it at first rally of the day, in Nevada.

“We're doing a barnburner today,” Ryan said in the state, which is seen as leaning toward Obama in NBC News’ battleground map. “We are crisscrossing the country – Mitt and I are because we are asking you to work with us, to stand with us to get our country back on the right track.”

Both Obama and Romney stuck to well-worn scripts that they had used throughout the frenetic final days of the campaign. The candidates at times seemed to acknowledge that much of the campaign’s outcome might be out of their hands, pleading with supporters to sway a winnowing number of swing voters over to their cause.

How will the Hispanic vote and the white vote impact the presidential election? What about older voters and younger voters? How much of an impact will Hurricane Sandy have on voting? NBC News' Chuck Todd and Time's Mike Murphy join a conversation on the issue.

“Your voices are being heard all over the nation loud and clear, thank you,” Romney said in Virginia. “I also want to thank many of you in this crowd that have been out there working on the campaign – making calls from the victory centers, and by putting up a yard sign, in your neighbor’s yard and maybe convincing a coworker to vote for Paul Ryan and me.”

Obama kicked off his first rally of the day with rocker Bruce Springsteen, who would hitch a ride with the president to Columbus for an afternoon rally, which was also to feature rapper Jay-Z.

"I get to fly around with him on the last day I'll ever campaign, so that's not a bad way to end things," he said of Springsteen, who will accompany Obama to Columbus, Ohio, on Air Force One.

The state with 13 electoral votes could go either way in this election, and may play a critical role in determining not only the next president, but also which party will control the U.S. Senate. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

Both Obama and Romney’s schedules, though, sent a powerful signal about their fundamental strategy for Election Day.

The states Romney is visiting, for instance, are virtually essential for his hopes come Tuesday. Failing to win Florida, for instance, would force Romney to have to win every single other remaining battleground state.

Obama’s stops, meanwhile, suggested attentiveness to his so-called “firewall,” which Republicans have argued is cracking amid surging Republican enthusiasm in battleground states.

Campaigning with Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, voting and election results.

Vice President Joe Biden, during a stop at a cafe in Sterling, Va., predicted the bloc would hold.

“I think we’ll win Ohio, I think we’ll win Wisconsin, I think we’ll win Iowa. I think we’ll win Nevada, I think we’ll win new Hampshire,” he told reporters. He added that Florida would be “close,” but said he thought “have a real shot of winning” the Sunshine State.

As they made their final arguments to sprawling crowds throughout the day, both Romney and Obama got an assist from additional superstars who entertained audiences before rallies had begun.

Supporters hold a sign as President Barack Obama speaks at a campaign event at Fifth Third Arena at the University of Cincinnati, Nov. 4, 2012.

Obama was traveling with Springsteen and Jay-Z on Monday, but Katy Perry and John Mellencamp had played before other Obama audiences over the weekend. Romney’s rally on Monday in Ohio was also slated to feature the Marshall Tucker Band.

Both Springsteen and Jay Z each did special songs for the Obama campaign, in Jay Z's case, changing an epithet in one of his songs to reference Romney instead.

"If you're having world problems, I feel bad for you son," he said, "I got 99 problems, but Mitt ain't one."

In the past six presidential elections, Wisconsin has been reliably blue – but this year, thanks to Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, the race is much tighter. NBC's Ron Mott reports.

Obama Has One Chance Tomorrow----

and that is if he trashed Mitt Romney's reputation enough in Ohio so that it will not follow the rest of the country and shift 5-10 pts rightwing like every where else. Can 100 million in ads in one state make it have one reality, while the rest stays the same?

That's the question. Up and down the list of states, Obama is doing 5-10 pts worse than in 2008, in Indiana he went from + 1 to -9, in Oregon he went from +16 to +6, in Connecticut he's gone from +22 to +10...the question is if he insulated Ohio from this

(if he wins Ohio, the President still has to hang on to several other states, but that's the core, above)

What does the military think of Commander-in-Chief Obama? According to a poll released by the Army Times Romney is preferred by a 62 to 32% of polled military members.

Also according to the Washington Times this little tidbit: http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/inside-politics/2012/nov/4/retired-top-military-brass-push-romney/

USA Today/Gallup poll (not to be confused with the Gallup daily tracking poll) has found that just as the nation wide polls show a 47 to 47 tie between Obama and Romney, the 12 swing states (the basic nine with Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania added) now appears to be also tied up, 48 to 48 Obama vs. Romney. This race couldn't be any tighter it seems.

No one can change the mind of someone who refuses to see. However, there are some who realize that the Obama Administration is a failed experiment. Everyone knows people who are unemployed or under employed. We have seen Obama openly lie to the American people and yet they refuse to believe their own hearts about his lack of ethics. Many folks will change their mind tomorrow and vote for Romney because their heart tells them if they want a decent job this is what must be done. Look for a tidal wave of support for Romney as the thinking people realize that Obama is just wrong for America.

This election has been an insult to the American way, presidential candidates and their affiliates buying votes (Obama), the liberal media showing bias in the way people cover media issues. I remember a day when journalism, and media was unbiased, and wanted the truth. I will tell you all the truth as I see it. Of course I already know your responses. I am a dumb repooplican, lol. I dont care what you call me. Obama had 2 years when elected in 2008 with complete control of both the house and the senate. What did he do woth that advantage that is rare. He chose to ignore the promises he had made his supporters, and worked on a bill that will cost seniors their medicare advantage plans, and destroy Medicare. It will cost the middle class for all of the additional medicaid recipients that will be added to the already over burdened policy. Where will all of the money come from to pay for this. The middle class. Are you all under a spell, or are you all Muslim that have crossed the open borders? The terrorism that has certainly not been put on its heels, and terrorist organizations are not on the run. Chances are if Obama wins we will all be seeing them uo close and personal when the overrun this country. Obama wants you all to go forward into total destruction. You are all puppets, and will see the truth, but it will be too late. What if any responsibility does Obama have in regards to Benghazi? Oh, I forgot the Al-Queda is on the run, lol what a crock of bull. I am sure that you all believe that Obama your personal savior is personally responsible for the relief efforts in the wake of Sany on the north east coast. Well too bad it took a week to help Statton Island, and much of New Jersey. Go vote in your cronie that will cause mass destruction to our economical security. We had a chance, but dividing the country was all part of the democratic plan. The world id a place of corrupt ideological crap. You all will need to stock up on toilet paper while you revel in your own loss of rights, You have made the greatest mistake of your lives. Remember you heard it here first, because I will tell you I told you so. Idiots.....

              beachbum,

It should come as no surprise that most who rely on the military for their living would vote for the opportunity to grab a share of the additional 2 trillion Romney has promised to the DoD.

Wonder how many of these retirees have stock in, or own companies that hold contracts with the DoD?

Why has President Obama lied to every American for the last four years? If you work for a small business or have in the past, or you are or was a small business person, DO NOT VOTE PRESIDENT OBAMA. In July 2009, I was told my credit score for my business was about 830. I went to get a loan for my small business to help move my business along. I was turned down at several banks because I did not bank with that bank. I was trying to get an SBA Business Loan of $5000.00. Thanks to President Obama, I lost everything and ended up losing my home. How do you tell your children that you may have to go live in a cardboard box or live in a truck? How do you tell you children that you did everything right and played by the rules and still lost everything? I didn't borrow from Peter to pay Paul. But you know who did? President Obama. That is right. This man borrowed assets from every department in the United States Government. He borrowed money that didn't belong to the Government. When you borrow from Social Security, that is dirty and it is rotten. Here back in August, the United States Government didn't even have the money to pay payroll taxes for all the Federal workers. That is Obama's fault. DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS MAN AGAIN. If you are undecided vote for an Independent. There are plenty of those running. I think when there is a debate all candidates should be able to voice their ideas, not just two big parties.

IT IS TIME WE HAD A CHANGE IN THE WAY THIS COUNTRY IS LED. PEOPLE YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE THE MEDIAS WORD FOR IT. THE BIGGEST KILLER IN JOB RECONSTRUCTION IS THAT HEALTH CARE ACT. OBAMA ISN'T GOING TO CHANGE IT, ROMNEY WILL. WHY DOES FREE ENTERPRIZE HAVE TO PAY TAXES IF THEY DO NOT GIVE PEOPLE INSURANCE. YOU WILL NOT FIND THE MAJORITY OF SMALL BUSINESSES ON THE STOCK MARKET AND THESE ARE THE VERY COMPANIES THAT WE ALL NEED TO GROWTH. ALSO ROMNEY SAID THAT HE WOULD SIGN THE TRANSAMERICAN PIPELINE FROM CANDA TO TEXAS. IT WILL NOT DESTROY ANY WETLANDS ARE ANY OTHER ENVIROMENTAL STRUCTURE. IT WILL BRING JOBS AND WITH THESE JOBS NEW JOBS WILL BE CREATED. WITH JOBS CREATED THEN PEOPLE WILL START PAYING THEIR OWN TAXES AGAIN AND EVERYONE WILL WIN.

TOMORROW, VOTE FOR ROMNEY/RYAN. THANK YA YALL!

The election won't be close. It will be a landslide, so a couple of states with problems won't sway the election.

Many Americans are desperate since Obama took office. Even the Occupiers have camped out because they are homeless and blame Capitalism when the fault lies at the feet of Obama who has failed to show any decent progress in repairing the economy. We cannot continue to bump along the bottom economically. This jobless recovery they speak of is not acceptable. Look at all the people who are committing suicide because they have lost everything. Americans for the most part want to work and just need that opportunity again. Obama has created too many divisions to ever be effective. Vote for America by voting for Mitt Romney.

Obama is the worst President in my lifetime and i'm 53 years old. You'd need to be brain dead to want to give him another 4 years.

For any who haven't heard the news, and for others who doubt the veracity of the story revealing Citizen Romney's "charitable soul" vis-a-vis his use of a CRUT to skim money from his own "charitable donation" to his church, here's the citation to the business organization that broke the story.

                              http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-10-29/romney-avoids-taxes-via-loophole-cutting-mormon-donations.html

How can anyone, let alone a nation, trust Citizen Romney when he steals from his own church via a trust, under the guise of being a "compassionate conservative"?

No one is buying your cheap late attempt to scuttle Mitt Romney. We have all gotten to know this very dear and noble man. Mitt Romney is like a father figure we can all trust. This is why he is surging to the front. We all know who openly deceived the American people many time and his name is Obama.

Many on Wall Street are increasingly convinced that Barack Obama will win the election.

On the eve of the election, many financial professionals on Wall Street believe that Mitt Romney has lost the election. In phone conversations, email and instant messaging exchanges, and text messages with over 20 people in different jobs on Wall Street today the message I picked up was almost universal: The president will be re-elected tomorrow.

Many of those with whom I spoke—all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity—had a sense of resignation about this forecast. They were Romney guys. They ate at expensive rubber-chicken fundraisers in midtown hotels, they coaxed friends and coworkers into donating to Romney and Republican campaign funds, and just a few weeks ago they were enthusiastically predicting a victory for Romney.

Not any longer. The word that comes to mind is: capitulation. The sudden and simultaneous collapse of hope that we sometimes see in markets just as they reach their lowest points.

There is a different 1% that most don't realize that also directly affects Mitt in all his policy proposals.

                                            1. Lower the tax rate across the board to 20%. The Mormon faith has a lot more well off people than the rest of the population. You even need to be wealthy for "God" to call on you to head one of their churches.

                                            2. Cut Education budget. Most Mormons take care of their own whether home schooled or public funded.

                                            3. Reverse Rode v Wade. Mormon faith does not allow abortions. If there is a pregnant single mother, They insist the mother give up the baby for adoption to another Mormon family.

                                            4. Eliminate FEMA. Most Mormons take care of their own. And there is hardly a disaster in NV or UT.

                                            5. Increase Military Spending. Given the Mormon faith is less than 2% of the population, Most young Mormon men would never see the battlefield. Even Mitt never served not his five sons.

                                            6. Allow more Business credits and less regulations. The Mormon church is not just a faith but has many business interests as well. You would be surprised in all their business holdings.

Now here's something else to ponder: Mitt raised or introduced more "Fees" as Govenor than any modern day elected person. He may say he wants to reduce taxes but he believes Fees are separate.

                                            1. Fees on Smoking and Drinking items.

                                            2. Fees on anything that has caffeine. ie. your Coffee!

                                            3. Fees on abortions and Planned Parenthood.

                                            4. Fees on anything else that the Mormon faith does not condone and would not affect their own faith.

These are just a few examples what might occur if Mitt was elected. We couldn't stop him but everyone should be aware of the either "No negative impact" or "Silent benefit" for the Mormon faith.

I know this will enflame some but just something to consider if you compromise your religious beliefs voting for Mitt.

How so narrow minded of you. As Americans did we rebuke John Kennedy as president because he was a Roman Catholic? Did we rebuke Barrack Obama as president because he formerly was a Muslim? A presidents religion is a private mater and how he worships is strictly his business. Mitt Romney is a very talented man who understands economics and has what this country needs. He is very capable of keeping his religion separate from state which is something you cannot seem to do despite being Liberal. Shame are you for being an Obamabot and not doing what is right for the good of this country.

The Kennedy's were just regular Catholics attenders. They held no high office in their faith. Mitt was and could still be considered a Bishop for the Mormon church. He not only condone all of their doctrine but enforced it. A man with power and wealth in that religion. He would have a hard time representing the 100% if his policies affected his faith a negative way.

Do the research yourself, everything is true. don't compromise your own faith just to vote your party ticket and not the person! I am an Independent and when faced with "Lesser of two Evils" vote for neither!

Once again you fail to realize that a president cannot pass policies that favor his religion unless the House and the Senate all are Mormons. Your lack of ethics are as deplorable as Obamas. Perhaps that is why you follow him so closely. Seriously this election is all about the economy and nothing else. When will you Obamabots finally grasp that? Mitt Romney is the most qualified in the choice between these two men. Should we be afraid that Obama is going to turn this country over to the Islamics? Of course not because he does not have that power and neither will Mitt Romney. However, Mitt Romney knows how to fix the economy as he has a track record of fixing broken economics whether its the Olympics or private businesses.

                                                  #522.3 - Mon Nov 5, 2012 8:44 PM EST

Everything Mitt will do will be based on his faith. His faith is priority one. Just look at those tv ads, The missing child in NY where he shutdown Bain Capital to look for this child. All the executives were Mormon and the family was Mormon as well. Then there was the dying child where he was there at the child's bedside, the family was Mormon. I doubt if this would have happened if these families were of any other faith! There is even a pending lawsuit against Bain Capital where five executive were discharged because they were not Mormon. His involvement with the 2002 Games was only based on the Mormon church and protect their investments first and help his divine journey for a better place in heaven. It was not because he loved the "Games" or was patriotic. Mitt really has no experience with any other faith, he was born a Mormon so he really doesn't understand the rest of us have a different faith that is much different than his. Mitt has never served in the military, he chose to use his Mormon faith as an exception to dodge the draft. None of his five sons have ever served either. When Mitt wants to increase the military spending and does his saber rattling, he knows that this would not really affect anyone that is Mormon, he would be only sending our main stream religion young boys to war.
His love for this country is only due to that the Mormon faith was created in America and Mormons believe that when Jesus returns it will be to America first and save ONLY the Mormons beccause they believe they are the only "true" faith. Connect the dots before you vote...there is a Mormon agenda!
How would you feel that the very website you use to track your family history based in Provo, Utah is associated with the Mormon church? Would you feel betrayed and violated that your privacy was shared by the Mormon church for their own belief to baptize the dead to the Mormon faith? The very information you add to your family tree online is being used for other purposes. How would you feel that Mitt Romney who was a Bishop in the Mormon church will have access to all your personal family history? All privacy will be lost!

The Tea Party's record is 1-0. Beat the Democrats like a rented mule in 2010, and took 63 seats away, permanently ending Nancy Pelosi's career as Speaker...she'll never be back.

The Tea Party's record is not on the line this time.......the GOP establishment decided that we were going to run a moderate again, and see if it works, even though it hasn't since 1972. About a 50/50 shot.

Whatever happens though, the Tea Party's record is still perfect. Any time a political party wants to run on cutting government, they'll win huge. Works every time it's tried.

Obama will win this election. Why? One word: judgment. This nation continues to push God out, replacing morality with whatever feels good and whatever the Liberal Media helps to push. There has never been a President more anti-God, anti-American, anti-family, anti-life - even anti-Israel. Four more years will equal "No More America" - at least as we know it. We will be bankrupt from Obama's increasing debt, taken-over by our enemies from a weakened military and spiritually dead from within. This nation will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah. Obama supports abortion even during labor and after birth allowing babies to be abandoned to die. Obama supports homosexual marriage from coast to coast. He supports socialized, eventually Communist government until our nation becomes a dictatorship under his rule. II Chronicles 7:14. Turn back to God, America. You want Obama - sometimes you will have to pay what you ask for.

Women are 54% of the workforce now. They don't need you're bs protection. They want jobs and family financial security.

Obama has lost a substantial amount of the African-American demographic that he had very near 100 percent of in 2008. African-Americans have suffered much higher unemployment under the Obama Administration. Young teenage African-Americans have been consistently over 34% unemployed under Obama. African-Americans are one of the most Christian demographics in this country and find themselves torn between their Christian beliefs and principles and Obama's endless promotion of homosexuality. While many African-Americans identify with Conservatives more closely than the Liberals they have voted for Obama mainly because of his ethnicity. However, that is not helping them find decent jobs or improve their economic standing. I see many of them just not voting as they know in their heart that Obama is just wrong for this country. If Obama is allowed to continue it will be many years before another African-American has a chance at being elected because of the damage this inept president has caused.

You have correctly identified the Romney electorate composite. Black voters that cannot sustain the mockery of voting for the white guy, even if the white guy is their best option to succeed. Instead, they will stay home in droves by a margin of 8-12% tomorrow, making the polls non-factual, and destroying the relationship algos that make the race appear to be a toss-up. In reality, it will be a landslide, both in EC votes and in the popular vote.

Today, there seems to be fewer right wing nut jobs on this site predicting a Romney landslide, or in fact, any kind of Romney victory. That makes me cautiously optimistic.
