Uncertain finale looms amid weekend campaign blitz

Updated at 5:50pmET: A rapidly-approaching conclusion loomed over the 2012 election on Saturday, as President Barack Obama, Republican nominee Mitt Romney, their running mates and surrogates swarmed a series of battleground states to make their closing messages.

Obama and Romney each employed a mixture of uplifting, forward-looking rhetoric with attacks on the other during a whirlwind tour of battleground states set to decide the election on Tuesday.

 Slideshow: On the campaign trail

Looking for a catalyzing moment to push past Obama in those swing states, Romney opted to play up the president's comments Friday at a rally, at which he urged supporters to vote as a means of seeking "revenge" against Republicans.

"Yesterday the president said something you may have heard by now that I think surprised a lot of people. Speaking to an audience, he said you know voting is the best 'revenge,'" Romney said. "He told his supporters, voting for revenge. Vote for revenge? Let me tell you what I’d like to tell you: Vote for love of country."

At a campaign stop in Newington, N.H., GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney stressed his support of entrepreneurs if he is elected president.

The Obama campaign, in response Saturday afternoon, called the line of attack "very small."

"I think it's interesting that that's the closing argument that the Romney campaign is making," said Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt.

The remarks were consistent with Romney's effort to project momentum heading into the campaign's final weekend, riding high after drawing the largest crowd of its campaign at a Friday night rally in Ohio. The Republican ticket has essentially tried to co-opt the themes of "change" from Obama's 2008 campaign as its closing argument now against the president.

Speaking in Mentor, Ohio, President Barack Obama speaks about his Administration's accomplishments of the last four years.

But the Romney campaign's outward optimism clashed with new polls giving Obama an ever-so-slight edge in pivotal swing states. New NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls showed Romney trailing Obama by six points among likely voters in Ohio, and by two points in Florida.

Related: Polls: Obama stays ahead in Ohio, deadlocked with Romney in Fla.

Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's trip Saturday afternoon to Pennsylvania, a state which the GOP has only contended in the final days of the campaign, was emblematic of the campaigns' dueling perspectives toward the campaign. The Romney campaign argued it was a sign of surging momentum while the Obama campaign cast the trip as an act of desperation — a Hail Mary effort driven by foreclosed opportunities in other battleground states. (Romney will stop in Pennsylvania on Sunday.)

While the outcome on Election Day is far from assured, a certain wistfulness set in as Obama looked back at his four years in office. He argued his experience as president showed he was someone whom voters could trust, meaning to imply as well that Romney wasn't.

"When you elect a president, you don’t know what kinds of emergencies may happen. You don’t know what problems he or she may deal with," he said. "But you want to be able to trust your president."

In this composite photo: President Barack Obama points while speaking at a campaign event at Mentor High School in Ohio, and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney speaks at a campaign rally in Dubuque, Iowa November 3, 2012.

And amid the late-breaking attack by Romney meant to cast Obama as embittered, the president told a crowd in Mentor, Ohio: "I don't feel cynical. I feel hopeful."

There were signs that awareness of the campaign's approaching horizon had set in among the Romney campaign as well.

"It was very emotional when I gave my last address by myself, because I hear the voices and the passion of the people out there that are really hurting, and they are etched in my mind and my heart, as they are with Mitt," Ann Romney told the press corps traveling with her husband. "It's been an extraordinary experience."

The full range of reflection would have to wait, though, until Wednesday. Obama and Romney — along with their running mates, Vice President Joe Biden and Ryan — each have a long list of stops ahead of them during the remainder of Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Their efforts are met by hoards of Democratic and Republican surrogates, who fanned out across the country as part of a frenzied effort in hopes of  adding a few more swing states to their candidate's column on Tuesday.

you have been deceived for decades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny, Ryan's people are already releasing/talking about what he may do, possibly teach or lobby, over the next few years before possible 2016 run for President.

Judging from the increase in Ryan for Congress ads here in Southern Wisconsin, I'd say he's pretty much hedging his bets. Even he knows that his old congressional seat is the only way he'll be back in Washington. Get out and Vote on Tuesday, people!

. 'Last push' is only a mirage. Literate and politically conscious American voters who had already decided after the first debate will never change their minds. This is quite transparent from the huge crowds that cheered in Romney's meetings. Although polls (real and manipulated) give conflicting numbers, the general trend according to impartial surveys is that Romney is leading in all states. Even White Democrats have switched sides in Ohio after Powell deserted the Republican Party. Judging from the crowds that throng Romney's meetings, it can be said with certainty Romney may sweep the polls and win popular as well as electoral votes..

THIS IS FROM THE WASHINGTON TIMES 11-1-12. Two-thirds of those who have found employment under President Obama are immigrants, both legal and illegal, according to an analysis that suggests immigration has soaked up a large portion of what little job growth there has been over the past three years.

The Center for Immigration Studies is releasing the study Thursday morning, a day ahead of the final Labor Department unemployment report of the campaign season, which is expected to show a sluggish job market more than three years into the economic recovery.

That slow market, combined with the immigration numbers, could explain why Mr. Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney have struggled to find a winning jobs message in some of the country’s hardest-hit postindustrial regions.

“It’s extraordinary that most of the employment growth in the last four years has gone to the foreign-born, but what’s even more extraordinary is the issue has not even come up during a presidential election that is so focused on jobs,” said Steven A. Camarota, the center’s research director, who wrote the report along with demographer Karen Zeigler.

His numbers are stark: Since the first quarter of 2009, the number of immigrants of working age (16 to 65) who are employed has risen 2 million, from 21.2 million to 23.2 million. During the same time, native-born employment has risen just 1 million, to reach 119.9 million.

It’s a trend years in the making: Immigrants are working more, and native-born Americans are working less.

In 2000, 76 percent of natives aged 18 to 65 were employed, but that dropped steadily to 69 percent this September. By contrast, immigrants started the last decade at 71 percent employment and rose to a peak of 74 percent at the height of the George W. Bush-era economic boom. They since have slid down to 69 percent amid the sluggish economy.

The Center for Immigration Studies, which wants the government to impose stricter limits on immigration, based its numbers on the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey.

Alex Nowrasteh, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute, which favors letting the markets rather than the government control the flow of immigration, said Mr. Camarota’s numbers are “making a mountain out of a molehill.”

He said delving into specific numbers explains why immigrants have done better over the past four years: They generally gravitate toward parts of the economy that have picked up faster in the nascent recovery.

“Most of the areas of the U.S. economy that are hiring right now, like agriculture and high-tech industries, are those where immigrants have always been overly represented,” Mr. Nowrasteh said.

He also said immigrants are quicker to jump into the rebounding job market while native-born Americans, who under federal law have more welfare options and access to unemployment benefits, are slower to find work.

Mr. Nowrasteh and Mr. Camarota said another factor could be immigrants’ mobility.

Natives have roots wherever they live, and it may take higher wages to get them to move for jobs, even if their homes are in depressed areas. Immigrants already have uprooted themselves and can more easily pick places where jobs are available.

7 REASONS GOD IS AGAINST OBAMA:

              1..Abortion.

              2. Homosexuality

              3. Less liberty and less freedom. (OBAMACARE--they will force you to pay penalty fee if you don't have a health insurance. We as people has the right to choose for my health outlook not to be mandated by force). God has provided this Land to progress and be free land. We're turning like Socialist countries.

4..OBAMA is against Catholics and Christians. Muslim faith is not the same as Christians. Christians believe in Christ

              5. POOR CHOICES in ECONOMY....getting in debt more than 6 trillion debt in 4 years, pretty much you're NOT thinking about the future's people. HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT AND GAS PRICES JUST FOR NOT INCREASING DRILLING PERMIT SO IT CAN RELIEF people's budget with low prices.

              6. LIE AND CHEAT, giving free pizza to student in ohio to vote for him is NOT RIGHT....cheating Latinos young kids with immigration status is CHEATING. Obama uses promises to coax and give false promises....A lot of obama's promises NEVER fulfilled since 2008.

7..ISRAEL....Obama is not supporting and pretending to be in business with them. Anyone against Israel will be destroyed based on bible promises. Israel is the heart of our believe: christ....anyone against them, better be off and careers be destroyed. I think 4 more years MORE BAD things will happen as SANDY..in leaders relied all the responsibility. Remember Moses and King of Egypt before the king let Moses go. The punishment is and the King and his people.....BETTER THINK DEEPLY FOR A TRUE CAUSE IN ORDER TO VOTE: YOU CHOOSE

GOD will let people to choose whatever we decided(God believes in freedom to choose, speech, etc). But if We choose wrongly, WE WILL PAY THE PRICE SO BADLY. SANDY IS ONE SMALL THING...

                @edede

If you think that the GOP would ever do away with abortion you're living in a dream world. If that issue were to disappear it would mean the end of the GOP as they would no longer have that issue to lead you around by the nose with. That issue is THE MOST valuable tool they have to lead you to the voting booth.

Never mind the social chaos that would ensue if abortion were outlawed. Once middle class white girls started dying from illegal abortions there would be a coast to coast revolt and the GOP would be wearing that mess around their necks like an ALBATROSS.

They would NEVER throw that carrot on a stick away. Keeping the abortion debate alive and using it to turn you into a puppet is the smartest trick they've ever come up with.

A pathetically biased poll by a socialist group where their failure is now glaring to the American people who fear for their care and their increasing taxes.

The Energy Department's loan guarantee program was created as part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, passed by a Republican-controlled Congress and signed by Bush.

In his signing speech, Bush lauded the bill's support for clean technology, though he didn't specifically mention the loan guarantees.

The loan guarantees were designed to "support innovative clean energy technologies that are typically unable to obtain conventional private financing due to high technology risks."

Republicans, including Bush, emphasized the program's benefits for nuclear energy and biofuels. The president touted the new energy law in his 2007 State of the Union address. His energy secretary, Samuel Bodman, regularly mentioned the loan guarantees in speeches on renewable energy. The Energy Department issued its final rules for the program in 2007, along with a list of 16 companies that made the cut for to apply for its first round of awards, and Solyndra was among them.

And now it is an expensive FAILURE. But obama has made it his hallmark of progress along with other costly failures-he has to go or a global economic meltdown is coming soon. The IMF is BEGGING us to change our ways and Obama and this pathetic bubble-world congress are ignoring the impending collapse.

Oh and a world war will happen as well. I see Syria just rolled into Israel's border. NO ONE respects us or Obama.

It really is sad that most American bearly take the time to find the real facts about something, and to be fair it works both ways, DEm's and Rep's. It really is our responsibility to be informed as a voter, and not some mass media fed zombies with paper thin levels of curiosities
