Democrats face very steep climb to 25 House seats they need

Even though all eyes are focused on the battle for the White House, there are 435 House members who’ll be elected next Tuesday. The House is likely to stay in Republican hands, giving Mitt Romney a helping hand if he wins the presidency, but presenting President Barack Obama with a legislative choke-point if he wins a second term, potentially limiting or blocking his agenda for at least two years.

Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, discusses seats Democrats would need to take control of the House, and the chances of the Republican Party gaining seats on Tuesday.

In the final days of the 2012 campaign, Democrats face a steep climb in their effort to retake control of the House, probably one that’s too steep.

Needing 25 seats to regain the majority they lost in 2010, the Democrats are fighting both against the power of incumbency and, in some states, against partisan lines drawn during last year’s re-mapping of congressional districts.

One forecasting model designed by political scientists Eric McGhee, John Sides, and Ben Highton predicts that the Democrats will gain one seat in the House. Analyst David Wasserman of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report said in an assessment Thursday, “the most likely outcome is no net change to a Democratic gain of five seats.”

In an April interview on Fox News, House Speaker John Boehner said “there's a one in three chance that we could lose” the House and “we got a big challenge, and we've got work to do.” Although, that statement may have been more of a spur to motivate GOP donors then a genuinely fretful forecast of the risks to Boehner’s majority.

Karl B Deblaker / AP

House Speaker John Boehner speaks to supporters gathered at a rally in Raleigh, N.C., Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012.

But the speaker’s comment gave ammunition to Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Rep. Steve Israel who flagged it for Democratic donors in an e-mail “BREAKING: He admitted it” – in other words Boehner had conceded that his majority was in jeopardy.

Even if Boehner was exaggerating for effect back in April, there are surely opportunities for Democratic gains, some of them obvious ones – such as the Democratic-leaning upstate New York district represented by conservative first-termer Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle – and others that the DCCC has worked hard to create and exploit in the last several months.

Israel “decided that we needed to expand the playing field and play offense in more Republican-held seats or else Republican outside groups would overtake us with their money. We’ve been aggressive and put them on defense in seats they never would have expected,” said DCCC communications director Jesse Ferguson.

Among the places Democrats say they have a good chance to make gains:

  • California’s 36th Congressional District: Rep. Mary Bono Mack, first elected in 1998 after the death of her husband Rep. Sonny Bono, faces a genuine challenge. “Raul Ruiz, the Democrat, has clearly made this into a more competitive race than some initially anticipated it would be," said Andy Stone, spokesman for the House Majority PAC, an outside Democratic group that will have spent over $300,000 on ads in that race by Election Day.
  • Florida’s 2nd Congressional District: Democrat Al Lawson is making a challenge to freshman Rep. Steve Southerland, with help from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, House Majority PAC, and a get-out-the-vote group called Fair Share Action, which is funded by AFSCME, by Denver gay rights activist and Democratic mega-donor Tim Gill, and others. The district had been represented for years by Blue Dog Democrat Allen Boyd before Southerland toppled him in 2010.
  • Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District: Democrat John Ewing, the treasurer of Douglas County (Omaha), is trying to unseat Rep. Lee Terry, first elected in 1998. "We view it as a real possibility to expand the map here," said Stone. The House Majority PAC has invested $75,000 in late TV buys. The Omaha World Herald endorsed Ewing calling him “an extremely capable public servant” with “the ability to work across divides to find practical solutions.” The paper added, “After 14 years, it's time for a change.”

The New York Times' David Leonhardt talks about the jobs report and the country's fiscal future.

The DCCC “Red to Blue” list is the roster of challengers whom the party designates for financial, communications, grassroots, and strategic support. The “Red to Blue” label signals to Democratic donors that these are competitive candidates worth backing. Some on the “Red to Blue” list, like Manan Trivedi who is seeking to oust battle-hardened five-term survivor Rep. Jim Gerlach in the suburbs of Philadelphia, seem likely to fall short.

And one red-to-blue Democrat has already fallen by the wayside: Democrats had high hopes for Pete Aguilar in California’s 31st Congressional District, but he failed to win a place on the ballot, getting only 22 percent in the June open primary in which the top two finishers advance to the November ballot.

The GOP has suffered from its own unexpected events: in Tennessee, first-term Rep. Scott DesJarlais, a doctor, is under pressure after The Huffington Post reported that he had an affair 12 years ago with a patient while he was getting a divorce. The news site published a transcript of a telephone conversation in which DesJarlais allegedly counseled the woman to get an abortion.

For all the effort and money being invested in this year’s House races, in one sense, the outcome of the struggle next Tuesday was largely shaped in 2010, when conservative fervor and anger over “Obamacare” drove Republicans to the polls, resulting in catastrophic losses for the Democrats. The Republicans won 63 seats, the largest gain for either party since 1948.

Recommended: Romney's closing argument: 'I promise change'

This year’s list of competitive races makes it clear once again how big a catastrophe 2010 was for the Democrats. They lost more than two dozen incumbents who’d represented Republican-leaning districts – including some long-serving members such as former House Armed Services Committee chairman Rep. Ike Skelton of Missouri. The districts Democrats like Skelton once held, or the redrawn versions of them, are now mostly safe for Republicans.

“Our strategy in 2010 was to go to the seats that wanted to vote Republican,” said NRCC communications director Paul Lindsay. Democrats such as Skelton were in districts that had voted for Republican presidential candidates Sen. John McCain in 2008 and President George W. Bush in 2004. This year, Lindsay said, “We are competing in Republican territory; they (the Democrats) are competing in more swing territory.”

Recommended: Ad spending closes in on $1 billion

But in 2010, Democrats also lost several districts, especially in the Northeast and Midwest, which had been Democratic turf, which they’ve had to spend money this year to try to reclaim.

To be sure, some of the first-term Republicans who are in Democratic-leaning districts seem unlikely to survive next Tuesday: Buerkle, for one, may be too conservative for her Syracuse-based district.

But in the irregular cycle of each party gaining, then losing, and then regaining the House majority, it now appears that the Democrats’ turn has not yet come.

Redistricting explains some of their challenge.

Not all redistricting has worked to the Republicans’ advantage: they’ll lose some races in Illinois and California due to re-mapping. But Republicans were able to play defense. Case in point: Pennsylvania.

Pollster and political scientist Terry Madonna at Franklin & Marshall College said Pennsylvania Republicans did “a masterful job” in gerrymandering the state’s congressional districts, calling it “the most skillful gerrymander any state has done.” The Republicans protected their incumbents, especially the four freshmen elected in 2010.

The only House seat now in play in the Keystone State is a Democratic one held by Rep. Mark Critz, Madonna said.

He added that the $5.4 million investment of Republican money on TV ads in the presidential race in Pennsylvania in the final ten days of the campaign might give a lift to Critz’s GOP opponent Keith Rothfus by boosting Republican turnout.

When all the votes are counted, it seems almost certain that House Democrats will have much more work to do in 2014.

If the dems don't get the House (which is doesn't look like they will), they need to shame the republicans into rescinding their tax pledge and work with the Senate and Obama to get something done.

This tax pledge is almost treasonous. It keeps them from fulfilling their responsibility for doing what's best for the country. With this pledge, they cannot raise taxes anyway, anyhow. That means we are stuck with the rich paying a 15% tax rate and the middle class paying a 25% tax rate or more. How is this good for the country? The selfish-right calls themselves conservative, but their ideas are beyond radical.

The 15% is on capital gains which is already taxed as income before it is invested. It is called double taxation. The wealthy already pay more than the rest of the country and oh the Dems in the Senate are holding hostage the middle class tax cut because they want the rich to pay more. NO one should have to pay higher taxes. Cut spending, lessen regulation, balance the budget and watch the jobless numbers plummet and the economy grow. Pretty simple! The approach we are taking of higher spending, more regulation and more texas has gotten us stagnant GDP growth, pathetic job growth and an unemployment rate that is now the same as when Obama and the Dems took over. Yeah like we need 4 more years of that!!

You know, the Democrats don't need to actually gain a majority in the House, just get rid of the Professional Obstructionists, Tea Partyers, Boehner, Ryan,Cantor etc. Then compromise becomes possible again and all's right with the world.

Trickle up poverty’
Is on the way.
If King Obama,
Gets his way.

Take from the rich,
Give to the poor.
We know for sure,
It doesn’t work any more.

Bring the rich down,
Is not the way.
For Obama and team,
Upon this day.

Lift the poor up,
One rung at a time.
With education and training,
It works just fine.

God blessed this great land,
Many moons ago.
But Obama’s plans,
Are not the way to go.

Capital Gains is double taxation? Many of the Plutocrats have never worked a day in their lives. Their trust funds have always made their money via capital gains. And do you know what they do with their tax breaks? They put them in their pockets. You know what the government does with tax income? It spends it on goods and services within the economy. That's why the economy has been better under democratic presidents (governments) than under republican.

The rich need to be taxed more. In the 50s, the top 1% were in a 90% tax bracket. In the 60's, it was in the 70%s. They did OK then and they would do OK now if they were taxed enough to get us out of this crisis. But they are too SELFISH. They feel ENTITLED. The wealth gap between the rich and middle class is sky-rocketing. And that is not good for the overall health of the economy, the health of the middle class, the health of our infrastrcture, nor the health of the future of this country.

However, with the economy last report showing the economy stuck in parking, I will almost bet that Mitt will be the next President of the Country. Below, is what I mean. You can link to it and also read that it benefits both candidates.

The final monthly jobs report before Election Day offered a mixed bag of economic evidence that quickly became political putty for the presidential candidates, with the unemployment rate ticking up to 7.9 percent but the economy adding a better-than-expected 171,000 jobs.

At the same time, the number of unemployed grew by 170,000, roughly the same amount -- to 12.3 million.

Righwingers: do you really think that reducing taxes and increasing defense spending will lower the deficit? Why did it fail when we tried it before?

As to the potential for more gridlock - is it really that bad? Deficit was down $100b this year, $100b the year before, and $200b the year before that. Not a bad trend. Meanwhile unemployment fell from 10.2% to 7.9%; the DJIA rose from 6600 to 13200; terrorism attacks are down globally; consumer confidence is the highest in 5 years; manufacturing added 5 million jobs in two years; retailers report increasing sales.

Heck, if we stick with those trends for another 4 years, we'll start to talk about Obama the way that we now talk about Clinton.

Do we really want to see if instead in 4 years, we talk about Romney the way that we now talk about Bush?

Aside to concernedditizen: calling Rachael Maddow "Maddog" exposes your nature. Rachael Maddow is actually extremely accurate, and willing to admit errors, and a thousand times more polite and reality-based than Glen ("the president is a racist" Beck). I'll bet you never watched Rachael for one full show, and if you did, you can't find a single statement that she made to be either incorrect or unfair.

We are in for at least a couple more years of congressional cock blocking no matter who wins the presidential race.

Repubs likely to retain control of the house, and will continue their status quo if Obama wins.

Dems likely to retain control of the senate, and would definitely institute shenanigans if Romney wins.

50% of us lose on Tuesday, and 100% (well maybe just 99%) will suffer as the ineffectiveness of our tainted political system drags these sham charades out.

The dems will not get the house back and if the worst happens and obama wins again, the last four years are going to look like child's play. We, the conservatives, are never going to sit back while those we elected sell us out to the liberal - let’s give it all away - crowd. If the dems want to see compromise, they should probably begin practicing voting yes to a balanced budget, deficit reduction, tax cuts, less regulation and smaller government because that is the only compromise that will be in their futures.

blg95 - Please enlighten me on how the sale of stocks is double taxed. When you buy stock and sell for a profit after a certain time, it is taxed at capital gains rate - 15%. There is no double taxation. If you buy an investment property and sell it for a 100,000 gain, there is no double taxation. Get your facts straight and quit misleading people. If you receive dividends from a corporation, they have been taxed at a rate of zero to 35 percent. Average being about 22%. So the average plus 15% would be 37% taxes on millions of dollars of income. Just slightly more than the top rate for people that have to actually work for a living. Plus if you lose money in the stock market, you can deduct it from your profits, which makes the gamble a little more sure.

blg95,

Capital gains does not tax money that was taxed before. Capital gains is the difference between the price you paid for something and the price you sold it at. If more, it is gains, if less it is a capital loss, which can be deducted. The original investment does not figure into the tax owed in any way. to tax capital gains at a rate less than wages is immoral. It is saying that the government should tax income earned by the sweat of one's brow at a higher rate than income earned by having enough money to sit on your backside and live off the profits of buying and selling stock.

When children throw tantrums because they don't agree with what their parents decide, the parents have two choices: they can change their minds to placate their child in the short term, or they can insist on their decision and indicate that tantrums don't win the day.

When the House decided to throw a tantrum because they didn't like what the American people decided in the '08 election, they were directly challenging the authority of the public to make the decision we made. They essentially told the public that we were wrong, and they weren't going to stand for it.

This is why re-electing Obama is not a 'status-quo' action. It is, in fact, the first time in four years that the public has a chance to tell the extremists in the House, who have shut down our government, blocked our policy wishes and even tried to hurt us economically, that their tantrums have not changed our minds, that we meant it when we said we were not going back to the policies that destroyed the economy and hurt so many people, and that they need to straighten up and live with our decision.

We know who created problems in Washington, and it is time to put an end to it. As any responsible parent knows, appeasing our children when they throw a tantrum only encourages that kind of behavior in the future. It is time to let them know we will not be swayed by their red-faced threats. It is time to show resolve, and re-elect President Obama.

Thank you ir12.

And to blg95. You DO comprehend that Mitt Romney's entire income appears as capital gains. He didn't earn or invest his own money. He syphoned off profits from investments using OTHER PEOPLE's MONEY....made a killing and then hid the fortunes in all manner of financial instruments, then draws money from those investments as capital gains, thereby paying an obscenely lower tax rate. To those of us who actually work for a living, having our pensions gutted and our companies sold out from under us....then be forced to train our replacements in China is the ultimate slap in the face...

Some VERY shrewd finance guys (like Romney) figured out they can make money off other people's money, privatize the profits, push the risk back on the govenment and walk away with their gains, then pay little to NO taxes on their "earnings" and that is all good with YOU, right?

Nothing has really changed since the 2010 mid-terms. The dems are still whining about the republicans blocking jobs and at the same time talking about how good Obama is doing with bringing jobs back. Kind of strange when you think about it. What changed? The republicans took back some control and jobs are coming back slowly yet the dems complain about the repubs blocking jobs bills? So I strongly believe that the shellacking of the 2010 elections is going to continue on Tuesday. The republicans take back the Senate, gain more in the House and Romney/Ryan head to the White House. What a great country we wil be again. Yes it will take time but you will see results much quicker than what we have seen in the last 4 years. This administration has been a failure. Our President is a failed leader.

Watched Fox for a few hours today and rather than giving any attention to the jobs report, they decided to keep on pushing the Libya conspiracy. Then, they implied that our current government is the source of the East Coast's pain. I was waiting for them to blame Obama for somehow causing the hurricane.

All they are doing now is drumming up anger, rather than recognizing the extreme good-will and concern that communities are showing for each other. New Jersey has been devastated and people are still in trouble, but the response so far is unbelievable.

Its sick watching Fox politicize this and its sick knowing how many people are so entrenched in their views that they condone and defend this behavior.

Yet, Fox's detestable negativity/blame game cannot match the resilience that we are seeing across the coast. Should be considered an inspiration to the rest of the nation. God Bless the East Coast!

Concerned,

Classic example of Fox spin. Yes the "unemployed" grew. Do you know why?

Because half a million more people now started looking for jobs. That means the "workforce"grew by half a million people. These are people who previously had given up finding a job and weren't part of the calculation. The very fact that these people put themselves in the workforce again is because the job market has gotten a lot better. In many depressed parts of the country, people quit looking for jobs for the simple reason that they didn't exist in the region. But now those jobs are becoming available so people formerly blocked out of the economy are actively trying to get back in.

But you need to understand how the numbers get calculated. Fox capitalizes on the fact that most people don't have a clue how this works. Believe it or not, unemployment rising by a tenth on a point under these circumstances is actually a very positive sign. Unemployment didn't rise because more people lost jobs, it's because the workforce got bigger. Every sector gained jobs with the small exception of government that cut several thousand jobs. The job gains numbers from the previous two months were also updated to be further positive.

Romney also spins it today to saying that unemployment is higher today than when Obama came into office. In January 2009 it was a rate of 7.8%, but because the numbers are based on the full month the reality is that it was really more like 8.1- 8.2 % if you adjust for the calendar. In February 2009, the numbers came in at 8.3%. Inauguration was January 20th. In the purest sense, 2/3 of the month wasn't even on his watch. In reality we were operating under 100% Bush policies until about the end of April of 2009. At that point unemployment was 8.9%, with 13.7 million unemployed and still loosing ground. if you were going to draw a line in the sand, it would be more appropriate then.

We aren't out of the woods by any means but all the job trends are positive and are beating predictions.

JH, Yes jobs are slowly coming back but just think how much better this country would be today if the Republicans had not blocked every effort to help create jobs. The Republicans even blocked a bill that would have help veterans returning home to get jobs. They want our young men to go fight a war for them but don't want to support them when they get home. Go figure.

Updated as of 5:00pm EST on Friday, November 2 (Thank God It's Friday!):

Real Clear Politics (RCP) consistently has been the "go-to" source for accurate averaged daily polling data for both FOXNEWS and NBCNEWS. With only 78 hours left to go in the 2012 presidential campaign, RCP continues to report Obama leading in eight of their 11 toss-up states with Romney leading in three.

In descending order of 'percentage of lead' in favor of Obama, followed in ascending order of 'percentage of lead' in favor of Romney, here are the published averaged numbers from RCP as of 5:00pm EST together with the most recent FiveThirtyEight election night probabilities of victory for either candidate:

In WISCONSIN, with 10 electoral votes, Obama's lead has jumped to 5.0%, up from 3.7% Thursday afternoon. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 91.2% chance of victory here, up by a significant 5.5% from Tuesday.

In PENNSYLVANIA, with 20 electoral votes, Obama's lead is holding at 4.6%. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 96.2% chance of victory here, up by 2.0% from Tuesday.

In MICHIGAN, with 16 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 3.5%, up from 3.0% Thursday. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 98.6% chance of victory here, up by a slight 0.5% from Tuesday.

In NEVADA, with 6 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 2.7%, up from 2.4% early Thursday. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama an 87.7% chance of victory here, up by an astonishing 8.0% from Tuesday.

In OHIO, with 18 electoral votes, Obama's lead has settled today at 2.4%, up from Thursday's 2.3%. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama an 80.5% chance of victory here, up by a substantial 7.2% from Tuesday.

In IOWA, with 6 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 2.0%, up from 1.3% Thursday. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 78.8% chance of victory here, up by a significant 4.9% from Tuesday.

In NEW HAMPSHIRE, with 4 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 2.0%, up from 1.3% Thursday. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 77.8% chance of victory here, up by a substantial 7.5% from Tuesday.

In COLORADO, with 9 electoral votes, Obama's lead has risen to 1.0%, up from 0.9% Thursday. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Obama a 64.6% chance of victory here, up by an astonishing 9.2% from Tuesday.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

In VIRGINIA, with 13 electoral votes, Romney's lead is holding at 0.5%. Interestingly, FiveThirtyEight increased Obama's chance of victory here, and NOT Romney's, to 66.4%, up by an astonishing 8.2% from Tuesday.

In FLORIDA, with 29 electoral votes, Romney's lead is holding at 1.2%. However, FiveThirtyEight currently gives Romney a 55.1% chance of victory here, surprisingly down by an astonishing 9.6% from Tuesday. It should be noted that RCP's average in this state has been inflated by a recent outlier finding in favor of Romney from Gravis Marketing, a polling firm funded in large part by BAIN Capital.

In NORTH CAROLINA, with 15 electoral votes, Romney's lead is holding at 3.8%. FiveThirtyEight currently gives Romney an 79.9% chance of victory here, down by a slight 0.3% from Wednesday.

So...

In order for Obama to win re-election the least complex route would be through maintaining his current lead in the five toss-up states where his existing margins are widest (Wisconsin at 5.0%, Pennsylvania at 4.6%, Michigan at 3.5%, Nevada at 2.7%, and Ohio at 2.4%). Doing so would bring his electoral vote total on Election Day to 271. In this scenario, Obama could still surpass 270 while failing to hold Iowa, New Hampshire, and Colorado.

However, should Obama fail to hold Ohio, the loss could effectively be neutralized by any of the following combination of wins from states where FiveThirtyEight is currently forecasting Obama victories:

Path #1: Obama loses Ohio but wins the remaining three states where he currently leads, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Colorado resulting in 272 electoral votes.

Path #2: Obama loses Ohio but steals Virginia while also taking New Hampshire, Iowa, OR Colorado resulting in 270, 272, or 275 electoral votes, respectively.

Interestingly, with Romney's lead having diminished significantly in Florida over the past two weeks and with Hurricane Sandy forcefully highlighting the stark contrast between the candidates regarding the value and necessity if not the mere existence of FEMA in a state which has perhaps the greatest dependence on federal storm relief efforts in the nation, a 3rd path has now emerged which could provide for some interesting election night television:

Path #3: Obama comes from behind to win Florida. This scenario would require only that Obama win the three states in which his present leads are widest (Wisconsin at 5.0%, Pennsylvania at 4.6%, and Michigan at 3.5%), resulting in 276 electoral votes.

For Romney to unseat Obama, he not only would have to hold the three states in which he presently leads, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia bringing his electoral vote total to 248, but also steal victories in both Colorado where Obama's lead rose yesterday to 0.9% and in either Ohio (where Obama's lead has settled today at 2.4%, up from Thursday's 2.3%) or in Pennsylvania (where Romney's campaign suggested earlier this week that Obama's significant lead of 4.6% may be vulnerable). By so doing, Romney's electoral vote total would reach 275 or 277, respectively.

Romney's Pennsylvania strategy, however, may be a highly-marketed feint designed to counter Obama's anticipated re-allocation of campaign resources to a quantifiably softening political landscape in Florida.

In any event, should Romney fail to steal either Ohio or Pennsylvania he could overcome this shortfall by capturing the four other states in which Obama's current leads are smallest (Colorado at 1.0%, New Hampshire at 2.0%, Iowa at 2.0%, and Nevada at 2.7%) resulting in an electoral vote total of 273.

FiveThirtyEight this morning estimates the chance of Election Day victory for each candidate as follows: Obama 80.9% (up from Wednesday's 79.0%) and Romney 19.1% (down from Wednesday's 21.0%).

FiveThirtyEight now also projects that on Election Day the final electoral tally will be as follows: Obama 303 (up by 4 from Wednesday's 299) and Romney 235 (down by 4 from Wednesday's 239).

Lastly, although it makes no difference in terms of the final result which can only be determined by the Electoral College, FiveThirtyEight currently predicts a national popular vote distribution on Election Day as follows: Obama 50.5% (up from Wednesday's 50.4%) and Romney 48.4% (down from yesterday's 48.6%).

With only 78 hours of campaigning left, and with this morning's published October jobs report playing to predictably mixed reviews (economy adding more jobs than expected; unemployment rate ticking up one tenth of one percent to 7.9%), holdout voters may now be left to nothing more than the proverbial 'feel in their gut' as Tuesday approaches.

TGIF, America. Go have a drink.

4 more days till Odumbo, POS POTUS, gets his walking papers. All the crybaby libs point at the republicans for not working with this $hit head, I believe it works both ways, the POS POTUS needs to work with congress, like your hero Bill Blowjob Clinton did. But instead, POS POTUSObama appointed himself dictator of the US, it was his way or the highway, thus 2 years of gridlock, which was actually an improvement over the prior 2 years of democrat control, that set the stage for this anemic recovery. Harry Reid, you better roll up your selves and be ready to go back to work in January, there's going to be a new sheriff in town.

With regard to capital gains taxed at 15%. The original investment was taxed as income when it was earned at whatever bracket the taxpayer fell into at that time. So yes, it more or less is double taxed. Why anyone wants to see this capital gains rate increased is beyond me, it will hurt everyone, and the middle class disproportionately more, and will do next to nothing to reduce the deficit.

So I suppose if we reduce defense spending and raise taxes the deficit is going to go away? What will keep the democrats from giving this money away for more government jobs and increase in the number on welfare? Do you think for one minute the democrats will ever stop entitlement spending? Up that percentage of people dependent on the government to over 50% and Obama can get elected to a 3rd term. He could be our President of lfe.

Very good post, you scholar!

While watching Fox, I had to change the channel and stopped on MSNBC. Thanks for the suggestion, btw. Unlike Fox they weren't pushing the Libya conspiracy theory, they presented a fuller view of the jobs report, and decided against blaming Obama for the Hurricane.

In the debt ceiling stand-off, Obama started out offering the Republicans 80% of what they wanted. They spat in his face.

He ended up giving them 98% of what they wanted - John Boehner himself quoted that number. The Tea Party part of the Republicans in Congress STILL spat in his face.

When one party willingly offers up 98% of what the other party wants, in an effort to be bipartisan, and bipartisanship still fails, then no, it is NOT a two-way street, as hardtostarboard so dishonestly claims. There is only one party at fault for that kind of deadlock, and that is the party that spits in the other side's face rather than compromise.

President Obama goes into his second term with no political gamble. All of the House Republicans go in with their jobs on the line. The President knows this, the Congressional Republicans know it, you and I know it. There will be no more political head games in racing to 2016 like we saw leading to 2012. The people's work will be done or Republican heads will roll in the midterms and 2016.

The Republican leadership will be forced to throw off the shackles of the evangelicals, the Tea Party and Grover Norquist. That is the best possible outcome for the Republican Party, our two party system and especially for the nation.

One big reason to vote for Obama is that I don't want to pair this Republican Congress with these Republican candidates. In case some have missed the "thrust" of the Republican campaign - they want to eliminate women's right to keep their personal/medical decision to abort a pregnancy (even from rape). This is virtually all the Republicans have been working on since they took Congress (they give lip service to 'trying' to do a couple other things). That, and holding firm on the Norquist Pledge on taxation. I think the Republicans will hold on to their Congressional majority and continue to be difficult to work with - but they'll need to look for some way to pass needed legislation too.

The unemployment number increased, why is this news? Why do they need to break the numbers down to put some sort of spin to save Obama's face? The real news is why the american people were lied to for two weeks. Remember the media asking, what did the president know and when did he know it? how does that not apply to this situation?

    Spider,

You do realize 2010 was a midterm don't you? Voter turn out was extremely low. A lot of people don't bother to vote in mid-terms unless it's also a gubernatorial election too. I might add that in more than a few places where some Tea Party idiot replaced a blue dog Democrat, you are going to see those elections reversed. All over America people are sick of the Tea Baggers. It is only in super red districts where they have nothing to worry about. Same thing will happen in some Senate seats too. Tea Party favorite Mr Richard Mourdoch, (Rape is God's gift to women), ousted long time beloved Republican Senator Lugar in the primaries. He's going to cost the Republicans a Senate seat. Even in a red state he is down by about 12% to his Democratic challenger.

I'm sure you probably live is some super red region and think it's like that all over the country. It's not. Democrats will pick up seats. Maybe not in your district, but elsewhere for sure. I'll agree that regaining the House has a pretty slim chance of coming to pass, but even just picking up a few seats will help. When Obama gets re-elected, don't be surprised to see some House Republicans siding with Democrats in an effort to kill the Tea Party.

It is going to be about saving a future for the Republican Party. If they continue on the obstructionist path they will destroy their future and they know it. Demographics are changing rapidly in America, soon "whites" in America, will be a minority group. There is no room for the Tea Party in the soon to be America and traditional Republicans know it because they see beyond the little district they represent. I saw a great post earlier today and it speaks to this. Soon Republicans will be replacing the elephant symbol of the party with a T-Rex because they're going the way of the dinosaur.

Democrats did not "own" Congress for two years, they only had a filibuster proof majority for less than 60 days. And if you remember they needed a couple Republican votes to move forward on "Obamacare". And also, if you paid attention, they did try to roll back Bush tax cuts on the wealthy multiple times but were blocked.

The 12,000,000 jobs he proposes will be in crating up and sending the last of our manufacturing equipment overseas along with a some Americans to train the dimwits in places like China who will receive equipment from our once great manufacturing centers which have been undermined by the modern day carpetbaggers like Romney.

No, it's not, blg95. That's a lie being told to you by those getting away with murder in our tax system to keep you from knowing how they're screwing you.

    Look up "carried interest".

Mitt took his income from Bain Capital as "carried interest", which is taxed at the capital gains tax rate, not personal income tax rates. AFTER all of his personal deductions, writeoffs and exemptions.

That would be like you or me getting our paycheck direct deposited to our bank account, using it to pay all our bills and then paying 15% to the government on whatever was left over.

Mitt also transferred $100 million of that "carried interest" to his sons' trust funds. TAX FREE.

Obama, Pelosi and Reid had a super majority in Congress for 2 years. Before that, Pelosi and Reid had a super majority under Bush for 2 years.

During those years of democrat domination, they failed to pass a budget for over 865 days, yet they blame it on Bush and the GOP.

    Another observation

During the first two years of the Obama Administration, when the Democrats had a majority in Congress, they were not always a unified block and they lacked the 60 votes in the Senate to pass legislation opposed by Republicans - unless they also got some Republican support. They were also trying to deal with a very serious economic situation, where there was substantial disagreement as to the best way to proceed. As a result, much legislation was was hard fought, requiring a long time to reach any version that could be passed.

Just saw a full page ad in our local paper paid for by the Billy Graham Evangelical Association endorsing Romney (of course, they could not say Romney's name because of their tax-exempt status, but it was the same thing as endorsing Romney)

This sickens me to see a beloved man like Billy Graham used as a pawn by his own son, Franklin. Poor Billy is 94 years old and in ill health. I have followed his career for over half a century now and he would NEVER support someone he believed was a member of a cult like Mormonism. It goes against everything he ever believed and preached during his lifetime. He denounced these cults from the pulpit in his many crusades through the years and spoke out against their beliefs with no reservations.

Some may say that Billy Graham would be against gay marriage, too. Yes, he certainly is, but if he were able-bodied and in his right mind now, he would do the same thing he did to Nancy Reagan when she consulted astrologers while her husband was in office. Billy Graham called her personally and told her it was wrong. He would do the same thing to President Obama -- he would call him and tell him that he disagreed with him.

But Billy Graham would NEVER remove the language from his website that said Mormonism is a cult. It is a shame and disgrace that his son Franklin has sunk to such self-serving depths.

Billy Graham learned from his mistake of endorsing any President after his mistake with Nixon. He became the friend of ALL Presidents, not just the ones that his greedy, money-loving ("oh, I didn't know that $500,000 was put into my retirement plan as a bonus"), attention-seeking, wannabe son, Franklin endorses.

In VIRGINIA, with 13 electoral votes, Romney's lead is holding at 0.5%. Interestingly, FiveThirtyEight increased Obama's chance of victory here, and NOT Romney's, to 66.4%, up by an astonishing 8.2% from Tuesday.

Well maybe by Monday, Obama's chance of winning Virginia will be more like 80%, since it will be up by an astonishing 15%, WITH ROMNEY IN THE LEAD HOLDING AT 0.5%.

So what's the message here, Romney voters? Even when your guy is in the lead, Obama has a greater chance of winning, so just stay home on election day.

Romney by 4 points on Tuesday. People don't like Obama anymore than they did in 2010.

The 15% is on capital gains which is already taxed as income before it is invested. It is called double taxation....... Dems in the Senate are holding hostage the middle class tax cut because they want the rich to pay more.

    =======================================================

Malarky! Typical GOP/TP bullc.r.a.p. People, the capital gains didn't exist before the investment, so how could it be taxed? These mouth breathers sure can twist things. If someone invests $1,000 in stocks, there is no tax on it. If that person laters sells those stocks after 1 year for $1,500, there is a capital gains tax on the 500 difference, never on the original $1,000 investment. It's no different than putting the $1,000 in a bank CD and after 1 year getting $1,500 back (a little bit unrealistinc these days, I know), only the $500 interest is taxed. God there is so much stupidity being blurted out all over these sites.

Actually, the DEMs wanted to keep the cuts for the MIddle Class and let the cuts expire for the Upper Class, but the GOP{/TP wouldn't agree unless the Upper Class also got the keep Bush's cuts, so in fact, it was your super elite GOP/TP who held the MIddle Class hostage, but go ahead, keep on spinning.

silverton -- I must agree with your sentiments on Billy Graham. He was a good friend of my family (grandparents on my father's side). Over the years I have been proud of how he was such a popular minister and yet didn't succumb to the lust for worldly possesions or the whoring around that, one by one, it seemed every other pastor fell to. I never knew Franklin, but I think you may be right in that it was not Billy's decision to endorse Mormonism.

If the dems want to see compromise, they should probably begin practicing voting yes to a balanced budget, deficit reduction, tax cuts, less regulation and smaller government because that is the only compromise that will be in their futures.

    =============================================

That's compromise???? You have a warped sense of reality, that's the whole ball of GOP/TP wax right there. It's like two people meeting for lunch, and one says, "Let's compromise, I'll select the food from the menu and YOU pay". How about spending cuts (including defense) along with some tax increases to reduce the deficit, now that's compromise....do you sell used cars?

The reason Romney can't get elected is because of the "scorched earth" policies of the Republican led House of Representatives. As a former Republican, I'll wait until the party shows it can reach across the isle before ever supporting them again. Imagine, supporting a political party that votes out of spite rather than doing what is best for the country..

    ==========================================

Amen to that.............I also am ex-GOP, having voted for Reagan (twice), Bush I, Dole and Bush II (but only in 2000). When I think of today's GOP having been infected, terrified and controlled by the schizoid TP, it reminds me of the former humans now turned to zombies on The Walking Dead.

If the dems don't get the House (which is doesn't look like they will), they need to shame the republicans into rescinding their tax pledge and work with the Senate and Obama to get something done.

They are and have been doing something. They have been working hard to prevent middle class Americans from paying more than $6/gallon for gasoline. They have been working hard to prevent Democrats from creating less safe working environments, to prevent the Democrats from endangering the environment, to prevent the Democrats from allowing people into positions of oversight even when there are conflicts of interest involved, and they are working to prevent higher deficit spending.

Many of the pieces of legislation they have been working to block do all the above and more under the guise of creating jobs. They are economy-damaging pieces of legislation that the Democrats are trying to force down Americans' throats. People should thank the Republicans in the House for saving their bacon these last few years.

If you don't believe it, you really, really need to read all this legislation and make sure you see and understand how it affects legislation already in effect. You need to look at the actual voting records and see what it is that they are doing and why. Several of the nay votes blocks were given because Democrats tried to invoke cloture to end debate and put the legislation to the floor for a vote.

There is much that has been debatable in the legislation the Dems have been trying to run through Congress. Much of it adds a lot of increased spending, raises the trigger affecting the debt ceiling, and actually threatens to harm the economy. How many in the middle class can afford to pay more than $6/gallon for gasoline? I think it would suck to work another job just to pay for your gasoline so you can work your other job, but that is just me, I suppose. :-)

Even the very wealthy and big corporations are beginning to face up to the fact, that President Obama is leading us in the right direction and the very wealthy needs to pay more taxes, to help build up our nation. All we need now, is for the gop to do their job of working for all of the people, in the best interest of all the people, and that includes the very wealthy, including Mitt Romney, to pay taxes on all of their earnings and stop evading paying taxes by offshore tax havens, and loopholes.

The House of Representatives will be essentially the same as now after the election, with Republicans in control with about 240 seats.

This means that a vote for Obama is a vote for several more years of 'GRIDLOCK', since Obama has demonstrated that he is either unwilling or unable to compromise with the Republicans.

Unlike Reagan and Clinton, who worked closely with an opposing Congress to get lots of good things done, Obama has made only one attempt to meet with the Republicans (on the Debt crisis), and even then he reneged on the 'deal' he made with Boehner.

With Romney as President, we will at least have some cooperation between the White House and Congress, and avoid more GRIDLOCK.

PS - My prediction is for the Democrats to retain the Senate by 53 (51 + 2 Ind) to 47.

    1new day

in 2004, The Republicans peaked with a turnout at 40% of the vote and the democrats at 35.

In 2006, The democrats had 37% and the Republicans dropped to 36%.

In 2008 The democrats peaked at 39% and the Republicans had dropped to 32%

In 2010 The democrats dropped to 36% and the Republicans had risen to 37%

All poll internals continually have shown the Republicans to be more motivated than the Democrats.

The reason the polling companies are using 2008 as the model or a trend, "there are more democrats registered than republicans".

With the performance seen in the early voting and in the absentee ballot requests, there is no way the democrats are going to turn out in a +7 to +12 rate over republicans. The will do well to be between +2 & +4.

Democrats were depending upon the early voting to bury the republicans like they did in 2008. The late numbers show that the Republicans have covered the deficits to which they lost by except in Nevada and Iowa.

So, Barrack Hussein has added over $5.6 trillion dollars to our National Debt in 4 years.

Now, what did he say when Bush only added 4 trillion in 8 years? Wasn't it something like "irresponsible and unpatriotic"?

So what does that make Barrack Hussein?

    Incompetent.

He promised you Libbies the Health Care Redistribution of Wealth Hoax would "only" cost an additional $940 billion, to make it appear like he was keeping his promise of not adding $1 trillion to the cost, but the CBO has reported it will actually cost over $1.76 trillion, so far.

Barrack Hussein lied to you, and you don't care.

We wasted $863 billion on a useless $timulu$ program.

Oh wait, it "created" 5 million jobs. So it only costs the government over $200,000 to create each job.

Let's see, is that "irresponsible and unpatriotic" too?

But wait! If we look at the quality of jobs created, Barrack Husseins record gets even worse.

Although six in 10 jobs lost during the Great Recession paid mid-level wages, the majority of new jobs created in the recovery -- positions such as store clerks, laborers and home healthcare aides -- pay much less, according to a new study by the National Employment Law Project.

The study covered jobs created from the first quarter of 2010 through the first quarter of 2012.

Lower-paying jobs, with median hourly wages from $7.69 to $13.83, accounted for just 21% of the job losses during the recession. But they've made up about 58% of the job growth from the end of the recession in late 2009 through early 2012.

Those jobs have been concentrated in three industries: food services, retail and employment services, such as office clerks and customer service representatives, the study found.

In contrast, mid-wage occupations with median hourly wages from $13.84 to $21.13 -- jobs such as construction workers, real estate brokers, and data entry clerks -- have accounted for just 22% of the new jobs in the recovery after making up 60% of the job losses in the recession.

So, we're paying $200,000 to create jobs making $25,000 a year. I'm not an economist but it would seem like our return on investment isn't very good.

THESE ARE THE "GREEN SHOOTS", THE "RECOVERY SUMMER" AND WHAT "FOCUSED LIKE A LASER" GIVES US.

No matter how you Libbies try to cover for your boy-toy, Barrack Hussein is a failure. If you think he has a solution to any of this mess he created I challenge you to tell me what it is.

His tax hike on your favorite bogeyman, the rich, is nothing but pandering to your ignorance. The alleged $850 billion his increased tax will create means it will generate $85 billion in revenue a year. This will pay for 8.5 days of spending, as we spend $10 billion every day.

So tell me, what is Barrack Husseins plan for the other 356.5 days?

    More debt?

Remember, we have already burned through $2 trillion of the $2.4 trillion we just raised last August during the debt ceiling debacle.

More jobs that cost $200,000 to create that pay $25,000?

More health care reform that will never work. Even if you think the exchanges will make up the money, businesses have shown you how easy it is to avoid that by just changing their employees to part-time.

So, as you Libbies worship at the altar of Big-Government and keep sniffing the chairs Barrack Hussein just sat on, this is the Hopey Changey you asked for.

    You deserve it.

Really, ya don't need to tax the rich. Taking away the incentives and most deductions they now enjoy is simply not taxing them. It's forcing them to pay their fair share. The want to actually use their incentives to create jobs here in the U.S. then great, give them the incentives. They move businesses out, tax the hell out of them and make sure it costs them more instead of being profitable. If they do not show they have added to their wokforce, then take the incentives away as well.

As far as their influence on politicians go, that right to profit off insider trading the congress and senate now enjoy needs to be taking away from them and mandatory ten years sentences at the very least if caught as well as huge fines that break their banks. The rich use these incentives to bribe and buy the politicians and make break the consumers their number one money maker. Without this incentive in itself, the majority of all the epa laws wouldn't exist. At least the ones that actually hurt small businesses to take out the competition for the larger companies that can afford to upgrade to nw epa standards they paid off law makers and up to get passed in order to squeeze out the small business owners.

We can thank our lucky stars there was a Republican majority in congress the last 2 plus years. If there wasn't the national debt would already be approching $20 TRILLION. Every time the white house or Democrats introduced a job bill or spending bill it was un-funded or at best only partially funded. The Republicans took their jobs seriously to hold down the deficit spending. Democrats on the other hand just want o spend money we don't have and let the next president suffer from it like they did when Clinton left office. Clintons policies ( NAFTA, GAFT and the mortgage restructuring ) caused the meltdown that began later in Bushes term. 9-11 was also caused by the lack of leadership ( like Obama) whenBin Laden was in custody. I keep hearing the Obama add where he asked " do we want to go back to the same failed policies of the paast ?" I say heck no but I am looking at the real cause of the problems we face not who had to bear the burden. Just so you all understand. When Obamacare begins to full impliment and the true effects are felt from the increase in the cost of medical care, increase in insurance rates and increase in job loss,. It will only start to happen late in the next term of whoever is elected and hit hard in the term after that. Yes go ahead and clim on the Obama train wreck if you like . I will remind you of it in a few years. Not that you will accept it then any more than you accept Clinton and the Democrats are responsible for the great recession either.

Awwww. Too Bad. Soooo Sad. Even if the Barak, the lib Messiah, can steal the election, Obama won't be able to implement his anti-American, socialist takeover agenda because we will have a responsible Congress that just won't fund his destruction of America.

If Romney wins, Reid has already vowed to use that bastion of liberal no compromise, the Senate, to block his agenda. As if, that would be a change from anything he has done over the last four years.

And as we speak Romneys vulture business Bain Capitol which he is still a huge shareholder is dismantling and shipping American jobs from a profitable U.S. company(Sensata) to China. Romney is the most ruthless and despicable type of business man in our country and the right wants him to be our president. I hope all you conservatives are willing to move to China if you still want your job.

On the day before an election that's supposed to hinge on jobs, taxes and the middle class, Bain Capital, the company Mitt Romney founded, will close the doors of a factory in Freeport, Illinois, and ship 170 good, high-tech jobs to China.

The employees of Sensata Technologies were forced to train their Chinese replacements, and the American flag that long flew over the factory was reportedly removed while the Chinese engineers were visiting the site. A group of workers have set up camp across from the factory -- calling it “Bainport” -- and some supporters have tried to block the trucks hauling equipment out of the plant. According to Dave Johnson, there have been several arrests.

Sensata workers have asked to meet with Mitt Romney and hoped to enlist his help keeping their jobs in the United States, but he has refused, instead remaining on the campaign trail where he speaks often about “getting tough” with China.

The most important part of the story is that Sensata Technologies is profitable operating in Illinois. Net income last year was $355 million, up 16 percent from 2010. The company reported total revenues of $1.8 billion in 2011, up almost 19 percent from the year before. According to a company financial statement, “both 2011 net revenue and adjusted net income represent record levels for the company.”

So this has nothing to do with “making hard choices” in the process of turning around a failing business, which is how the Romney campaign describes Bain's corporate raiding. Bain's partners are looking for a modest boost in profits by locating the plant closer to the booming Asian automotive market (Sensata makes high-tech automotive parts). They'll get a small tax break for relocating the plant – the one Mitt Romney insisted did not exist during the first debate – and possibly defer taxes on some of the income the company generates.

We need to vote more millionaires into Congress, because they promised a fair tax rate for the middle class and promised more jobs for their statespeople. I've never understood how individually intelligent people can become a group or mob and turn into the dumbest bunch of A$$HOLES who can't do anything even remotely close to what I would construe as actual "Working for America". How did we get hypnotized into sending the rich to decide what is best for a normal "Money Maker" in America? The sad reality is here in my East Tennessee section of the state, a Democrat has a chance in hell of getting elected. They say zombies do not exist and I believed it, until I started asking people about issues and how it impacts us locally, and I'm sorry but there is a massive army of the voting undead. Don't know sh!t about what the issues are about, just going to pull that lever because their preachers and parents would want them to vote that way.

This tax pledge is almost treasonous. It keeps them from fulfilling their responsibility for doing what's best for the country.

What's best for the country? That would be forcing Congress to act with fiscal responsibility--cutting unnecessary spending, eliminating loopholes and lowering tax rates to stimulate growth and encourage individual saving/investing, while making sure that EVERYONE pays something (that's called "paying one's fair share"). Raising taxes simply robs the individual taxpayer of their money to feed Congress' insatiable appetite for unnecessary spending chasing after votes--when they've already repeatedly proven that they can't be trusted to act responsibly with the money you've already given them, what could possibly make you think that they'd be responsible if given even MORE of your money? Completely illogical.

With this pledge, they cannot raise taxes anyway, anyhow. That means we are stuck with the rich paying a 15% tax rate and the middle class paying a 25% tax rate or more. How is this good for the country?

The 15% rate that you're citing is for capital gains, and that applies to ALL taxpayers reporting income from investments--including the IRA, 401k, etc. investment gains income upon which many senior citizens depend. Furthermore, that 15% is on top of the money already having been taxed once (at least in the case of dividends, which corporations are taxed on before the money is given to shareholders)! As for the "25%" claim, you're talking about the MARGINAL tax rate on EARNED (salary) income, not the EFFECTIVE rate (and yes, there IS a big difference between the two). Most "middle class" don't pay anything close to a 25% EFFECTIVE tax rate, due to various deductions, etc. Try more like 10-15% as an effective rate for the typical middle class taxpayer. If you use TurboTax when you file your taxes, it does identify the two rates for you if you read the printouts. If you use a CPA or accountant to do your taxes, then they should certainly be able to do so too (since they essentially use the equivalent of TurboTax software anyway). Your comments suggest that you do not understand the difference between EARNED and INVESTMENT income, nor between the MARGINAL and EFFECTIVE tax rates on earned income, nor do you recognize the need for a low tax rate on investments. If you're trying to save for your future and build up a retirement nest egg, then you definitely don't want the capital gains tax rate to go up. Please do everyone a favor and go educate yourself on taxation and finances before spouting off.

You think the idea that you should be able to keep what you earn instead of handing it over to the government to waste is selfish and radical? I hate to burst your bubble, but the Founding Fathers didn't share your viewpoint on that. But then, I suppose they were considered "radical" too at the time. If holding the views of the Founding Fathers is once again considered "radical," then what does that say about those people who do not?

I'd love nothing better than for the dems to take back the house, but it just isn't going to happen. They will likely reduce the republican majority a bit, but to call it a "steep climb" to reach majority status is putting it a bit too optimistically. The math in the HoR just doesn't work for the dems this time around, and they might even have a hard time just hanging on to the senate...but that's really only because so many dem Senators are up for re-election. Next time, it will be the other way around, with more GOP seats at risk. I predict Obama wins, an evenly-split senate or nearly so, with the potential tiebreaker going to the dems, and a house that will look a lot more balanced but will still be under GOP control. I guess I'm not really going out on a limb with those predictions, but that's still how I see it going down.

The "founding fathers" didn't expect us to be idiots. I'm sure the brightest of them would have expected us to change with the times. The economy, and the pressures it is under, are very different than anything they could have imagined. The founders didn't expect us to worry about what they might think of us, but they would likely expect us to act in our own best interest.

Byt the situation is volatile,..out of anybody's control - just like 1983 Beirut Lebanon Marine barracks terrorist attack that killed 240 US marines - no fault of Reagan who was overwhelmingly re-elected in 1984 -

I can see Liberals defending him if he had a decent record of the last 4 years but his records suck! I think Obama will win the electoral vote and Romney will win the popular vote.. I also think Republicans will keep the house and take majority of the senate and I can live with that.

Not sure the logic of you blaming that on Romney who has not been in government for the last four years. Obama is encouraging those jobs to move overseas.

There are whole lot of people who don't answer the phone when the pollsters call and who quietly sit back and digest what is going on and most of them understand this presdent is just full of it and himself and does not represent what this country needs. The only poll that matters is next Tuesday and then mercifully this seemingly endless negative and expensive election will be over.

        Truth Conveyor

Romney may not be president now & I hope he never is, but he started this back in 1984. Buying companies & eventually either bankrupting them or sending jobs to China all for the price of getting more money in his pocket & those of the investors. While getting rid of american jobs & in some cases getting rid of the american workers pensions. Below is a article from PRWatch.org. regarding Romney, Bain Capital & Sensata in Freeport, IL & Bainport. There is a reason that Romney is known as the Outsource King.

As CMD's Mary Bottari has previously reported: "In 1984, Romney co-founded Bain Capital, a spin-off from Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm. A new accounting details Bain Capital's history in shipping some 15,865 manufacturing jobs overseas. Using a conservative multiplier, which takes into account other jobs in the supply chain or community dependent on those manufacturing jobs, Bain is responsible for some 31,730 lost jobs."

Bain Capital bought Sensata in 2006, acquiring the plant in Freeport, Illinois, which has employed some 170 workers. The plant is high-tech, highly profitable, and efficient. It makes sophisticated sensors needed for vehicles, such as US-made General Motors and Ford cars. In 2011, the company had a net revenue of $1.8 billion and adjusted net income of $355 million. This represents "record levels for the company," Sensata said in a financial report. But, despite this profitability, Bain Capital decided to move the plant to China. Piece by piece, Sensata's equipment is being dismantled, crated, and shipped to Jiangsu Province, where the Chinese government has built a new plant.

Sensata workers who are living in tents in Bainport are very aware of how their predicament is linked to the presidential election. All around the campgrounds are signs that say things like "Sensata is the Romney Economy" and "Welcome to Bainport: A Taste of the Romney Economy."

Bonnie Borman, a Sensata worker who is losing her job on November 5, told CMD: "We tried to reach out to Mitt Romney, because of his ties with Bain Capital, and because he created the model that they still use today. Being a presidential candidate, he's got the power to do so much. I think this would have been a big help to him if he would have stepped in and said, 'hey, I don't want these jobs shipped to China', but he didn't. He didn't even say he was sorry that we were losing our jobs."

        M54,

But this is happening on Obama's watch. Why can't he create an environment here in the US to keep those jobs here. He has had four years to do it and company's are still leaving the US in droves. Why cant't he figure it out.

Don't blame Romney. He is not the POTUS. This is Obama's economy. Elections have consequences (to quote Obama) and one of the consequences is illustrated here. Businesses have had enough of his act. You may wish to think it different, but clearly company's are voting with their feet.....as in outta here!

They are done with his antics. If Obama wins you can count on four more years of this garbage and the middle class will be crushed even worse than it already has been these last four years. And to be clear: THIS IS ON OBAMA's WATCH. I find it interesting that the article references Romney, being a presidential candidate has so much power he could do something about it. I guess that poor person forgot that Obama is the ACTUAL POTUS now. Maybe she should be contacting and blaming him. After all, he gave a bunch of taxpayer money to tow screwed up companies in the form of GM and Chrysler that that

Referencing Bain back to 1984? Really? That is weak sauce and you need to grow up.

M54... I have a way more interesting story for you .

HOW MORMONISM WILL AFFECT A ROMNEY PRESIDENCY and YOU.

This is a LENGTHY read but if you know a REPUBLICAN or ANYONE who is contemplating voting for Mitt Romney ... this is something they MUST BE AWARE OF. Because if you don't think that his religion is going to have a HUGE impact on his decision making.... you're fooling yourselves. This man is NOT a "Christian"... MORMONS , no matter how loud

ly they profess it... ARE NOT CHRISTIANS. This is a very HUGE HUGE HUGE propaganda campaign they have been planning for the last 20 yrs in order for this day....hoping that ROMNEY will win the Presidency and fulfill the WHITE HORSE PROPHESY...retribution for the murder of Joseph Smith. They HAD to secure the mainstream Christian vote... and YOU'VE ALL FALLEN For IT. Oh... and I AM AN EX-MORMON so I know what I'm talking about.

          http://www.december212012.com/articles/religion/2012-%20White-Horse%20-Prophecy.htm

THIS is what MORMONS REALLY BELIEVE.

In all the extensive media coverage of Mitt Romney, much of it discussing his religion, not a word have I seen about the secrets of Mormonism, the secrets of Romney's life-long beliefs and practices. The reason, of course, is obvious: nobody can talk about a secret unless they are in on the secret. And few journalists or Christian ministers or anti-Mitt politicians are in on the secret. Only Mormons know the secrets, and they're not going to tell. And former Mormons, like myself, who were initiated into those same secrets, and afterwards left Mormonism - we know the secrets. Should we tell?

Journalist Frank Rich, in his January 29 article "Who in God's Name Is Mitt Romney?" in New York Magazine, subtitled it: "His greatest passion is something he's determined to keep secret." And that secret is the details of his beliefs and practices as a faithful, life-long Mormon, the same secrets that all good Mormons have vowed to keep secret, even though their life depended on it.

And why does Romney (and his church) want to keep people from knowing those secrets? Most Mormons will claim that they are not "secret," but merely so "sacred" that they cannot be discussed. That is a quibble, since Mormons hold any number of other aspects of their religion to be "sacred," and yet they don't hesitate to discuss them (for example: baptism, conferring the gift of the Holy Ghost, ordination to the priesthood, etc.). In my day, when Mitt and I were initiated into the secrets, we were specifically instructed that we were under "the greatest obligations of secrecy." Nowadays, the Mormons simply take a solemn oath that they will "never reveal" anything about the rituals. That sounds like a secret to any ordinary person, doesn't it?

All right. I am going reveal those secrets, since nobody else seems willing and able to do so.

The biggest secrets involve the special lengthy rituals (the Mormons call them "ordinances") that take place outside of public view in the Mormon temples. The most important of these rituals is called the "endowment" - lasting several hours and taking the Mormon through symbolic washings and anointings (in my day they were actual washings and anointings on the entire naked body), then clothing the Mormon in special clothing and robes (including the notorious "magic underwear," which Mormons call "the garment"). The Mormon then watches and participates in long dramatizations of key events in the coming of the gospel, beginning with the creation of the world, showing Adam's fall, the coming of the Christian gospel (but not the crucifixion and resurrection), and ultimately the Mormon's being admitted into heaven, represented by "passing through the veil (of the temple)." When Romney and I first went through this ceremony, it was a ritualized dramatization with live temple personnel. Nowadays it's a movie.

Yes, the most sacred worship service in Mormonism involves watching a movie.

Why is that so secret? you may ask. What aren't the Mormons supposed to reveal? What do they hold so sacred that it's secret? Quite a lot.

Part of the endowment ritual instructs the Mormons in the four "signs" and "tokens" of the Mormon priesthood. Each also has a "name" (or password). The Mormon must make an oath that he (or she) will never reveal these, outside the temple. The purpose of the signs and tokens, according to Mormon Prophet Brigham Young, is that they will be needed to pass the angels guarding the gates of heaven. The tokens are various handshakes, copied largely from the Masonic initiation rites of the 1830s, when church founder Joseph Smith was initiated into Freemasonry. The signs are various positions of the arms and hands (right arm to the square, for example, is the "first sign of the Aaronic priesthood").

Before 1990, when Romney and I first went through this ceremony, we were taught that each of the first three signs and tokens also had a "penalty" associated with each one, and we had to mime various ways of taking life to represent the penalty to us if we were to reveal the secret signs and tokens: slitting one's own throat, ripping open one's chest, disemboweling oneself. Yes, folks, this was part of the most sacred ritual in Mormonism: pantomiming your own bloody death.

So Mitt Romney, and all other righteous Mormons, can be confident that they know the secret passwords and secret handshakes to get into heaven. Do you see why Romney and his church are reluctant for "unworthy" people (the rest of us, including Mrs. Romney's parents) to know about this? As Deborah Laake put it in her autobiographical book Secret Ceremonies , (New York 1993):

The actions that were going to guarantee my entrance at the gates [of heaven] would have nothing to do with love or charity or the other teachings of Christ that I'd been raised to believe God valued. In fact, I hadn't heard a single one of those words spoken today, the most primary day of religious instruction in my entire life. No, I was going to burst into heaven on the basis of mumbo-jumbo. ... The mysteries of life were fraternity rituals. ... Did all the white-suited glorifiers in the room unquestioningly accept a ritual of nutty gestures from the pseudo-occult as a sacrament? Those were the first moments when I viewed Mormonism with suspicion.

Or as summarized by a young Mormon missionary:"If we told investigators [prospective converts] about that, they wouldn't join, because it's too weird!"

But wait! you are saying. You haven't revealed anything. You've just told us that there is stuff to reveal. So reveal it!

Right. The four secret passwords that will get you into heaven:

The first one is the "new name" that you get with your garment. Mine is "Enoch" and you can borrow it when the time comes. The angel won't know. If you're female, you can use my ex-wife's new name: "Mary." (She would kill me if she knew I gave her sacred new name away!)

The second password is easy: your own given first name.

The third password: "The Son," meaning "the Son of God."

The fourth one is so sacred that you don't get it until the very last moment in the ceremony, at the veil, from God Himself (or an old guy standing behind the curtain who is pretending to be God). And it's very long, but you have to memorize it or you don't get in:

Health in the navel, marrow in the bones, strength in the loins and in the sinews. Power in the priesthood be upon me and upon my posterity through all generations of time and throughout all eternity.

(If you watched "Big Love" faithfully, one episode showed this part of the ceremony.)

And what about the secret (oops! that should be "sacred") handshakes? Rather than describe them, I will suggest you simply do an Internet search for "mormon handshake" images. They'll be right at the top.

Anything else? Yes, there are more secrets.

During the endowment, Mormons are required to take secret oaths that they will obey various "laws." The "law of obedience" requires them to obey "the law of God and keep his commandments." They don't specify what the "law of God" is, but Mormons understand that the Mormon church is the only true source of God's law and commandments. So they are taking an oath to obey their church.

The "law of sacrifice" requires them to "covenant to sacrifice all that we possess, even our own lives if necessary, in sustaining and defending the Kingdom of God." Mormons understand "the kingdom of God" to be the Mormon church.

The "law of the gospel" is accompanied by a charge to avoid "evil speaking of the Lord's anointed [church leaders]" as well as avoiding "light-mindedness, loud laughter, taking the Lord's name in vain" and every "unholy and impure practice" (not specified).

The "law of chastity" is to abstain from sexual relations except with one's lawful spouse. That one does make sense. That's one of the Ten Commandments, after all.

The last law is the "law of consecration." It requires the Mormons to

...consecrate yourselves, your time, talents, and everything with which the Lord has blessed you, or with which he may bless you, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for the building up of the Kingdom of God on the earth and for the establishment of Zion.

A couple of terms need explanation. The "Kingdom of God on the earth" and "Zion" mean, to Mormons, not just their church, but ultimately the theocracy that will replace the non-religious civil government. They believe, of course, that Christ will come to run this government, using faithful Mormons as administrators.

The pressing question for Mitt Romney, and for the Mormons who are supporting his candidacy, is: Would Romney consider the Presidency to be something that God had "blessed" him with, and which, pursuant to his secret oath, he should "consecrate" to his church for establishing a theocracy? If he is elected, will he kneel down and thank his God for blessing him with the presidency? And what is he supposed to do, according to his secret oath, with "everything" God has blessed him with? That's right: he is to use it for the benefit of the Mormon church.

Now wait a minute, you may be thinking. It doesn't really mean that! The Mormon church doesn't expect that from its members, does it? Oh, yes, it does! Remember California's Proposition 8? The Mormon church pulled out all the stops to pass that proposition, which would forbid same-sex marriage, and it called upon all Mormons to cough up and donate, even those who were not California voters. Those who were hesitant to do so (often the amounts demanded were thousands of dollars per family) were simply and subtly reminded of their "temple covenants." And they all understood that the church was calling in the chits on the oaths to obey, to sacrifice, and to consecrate whatever the church demanded of them.

How would a President who was also a good Mormon obey those secret oaths?

It wouldn't even take a phone call from church headquarters to the White House. Mitt, being a well-trained Mormon, knows "in his heart" what God would want (which is the same thing that the church wants, of course) and doesn't need to be told. That's the way it works already in the only American theocracy in existence today (Utah). The Mormon politicians who run that state - the judiciary, the legislature, the executive branch - don't have to ask church leaders for direction. They know what they should do, without asking specifically (usually).

The question for American voters is: knowing that Romney has taken this secret oath, that he is a faithful Mormon, do you want him to answer the question "Would you feel bound by your sacred oath to obey the law of consecration that you made in the endowment ceremony and use the power of the presidency to benefit the Mormon church?"

Should it make a difference to you, the voter?

. . . . so the JOBS BILL will get passed! so the bill for help for VETERANS will get passed! for a more cooperative Congress . . .

Those two bills are bad for America. Want proof? Read them. Read what they would have done to America had they passed. That Veteran's bill creates another government office at a cost of a lot of money to decide which five states get the aid. That jobs bill in addition to the so-called veteran's bill increases the cost of gasoline and creates less safe working environments, as well as removal of environmental safeties and also allows people with conflicts of interest to hold oversight positions. All of this is bad for the economy and is bad for American workers and the environment.

When will Americans actually read what the Republicans have saved this country from time and again? Give Congress back to the Democrats and these pieces of legislation that can harm America will pass without removing the garbage that makes what could have been good legislation into bad legislation. They will invoke cloture and run it through without the Republicans being able to stop them. Is that what you really want? Maybe the leaders among the Democrats are right in their belief that the public are too stupid to govern themselves. Perish the thought!

@ Jersy Girl 1- Holder has already been exonerated about Fast and Furious. Don't you keep up with the news? As far as Benghazi- the evidence already shows the CIA, who had agreed to provide security assistance to the compound in Benghazi (it's not an embassy) was on scene within 25 to 30 minutes of the start. The were no orders to "not engage", the Americans had ammo for their weapons and they weren't abandoned no matter how much Faux News puts out false information.

What is really disturbing is Romney and the Republicans saying that if we don't elect him as president, the Republicans in the House will tank the economy. They are using blackmail to try to get Romney in office. I don't like being threatened and that is the surest way to have me working against those who make threats. I hope many Americans feel that way and vote for the Democrats on their ballots.

Nope. The Constitution of the United States has no religious litmus test for the office of the President of the United States. It never should. Anyone who thinks so needs to move to a country where there is a religious litmus test for public office. Perhaps, say, Iran?

and I AM AN EX-MORMON so I know what I'm talking about.

And, you are utterly clueless about a great many things Mormon. For instance, if you knew what you claimed you knew, you would know that the official stance of the Mormon Church on the so-called "White Horse Prophecy" is that it is garbage and not authentic.

If you knew what you claimed you knew, you would know that the Mormons do not believe that you have to go to one of their temples to enter into their celestial kingdom. You do have to be baptized into their Church to get there but you don't have to go to a temple to get there. And, in their beliefs heaven is of more than one kingdom and that many of the world's inhabitants would enter into a kingdom of heaven, being Mormon or not.

If you knew what you claimed you knew, you would know that the official position of the Mormon Church is that they have no control over any office of the United States and the official stance is complete political neutrality, except in cases of morality that could affect them in future.

If you knew what you claimed you knew, you also would have known that Mormon involvement in Prop 8 is nowhere near what you claim. In fact, the majority of people involved in that were Catholic. Check the stats. I doubt you will, though.

If you knew what you claimed you knew, you also would know that Utah is anything but a theocracy. I've seen better, more theocratic "theocracies" in the Middle East.

Romney will no more run the country to benefit Mormons and the Mormon Church than did John F. Kennedy for the Roman Catholic Church or even the Pope of Rome. And Mormons believe that Joseph Smith (after failing to find the buried treasure of Capt. Kidd), suddenly was given some golden plates by an angel named Moroni who told him to start this new religion.

And they believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers.

And they believe that you can have an eternal marriage ceremony done here on earth and be married to that same person forever in heaven, which of course, is in direction opposition to the holy scriptures where Jesus said people are not married in heaven.

Many more differences too numerous to mention.

That is why Billy Graham always said Mormonism is a cult.

Here is one quote from Billy Graham about what he thinks about cults like Mormonism:

"One of the ways some people seek to fill the empty place in their souls is with false religion—and when a cult leader persuades them that he has all the answers, they will sacrifice almost anything to follow him."

            How true, Mr. Graham.

“President Obama is refusing to comply with the law that requires him to publish forthcoming regulations because he doesn’t want the American public to know the terrible cost of the regulatory barrage he plans to unleash in a second term.”

“So instead of being honest with the American people about what’s in store if he wins, he’s been trying to hide the fact that he intends to move forward with a slew of rules that will destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs and dramatically raise the cost of energy on American families.”

This is the person the left wants to re-elect.... a man that IGNORES the FEDERAL LAW..... at best, he's afraid of the facts...... at worst, he knows the contents & understands the devastation the new rules would have on our country.....

              silverton,

Your religious bigotry aside, there is no religious litmus test for the Office of the President of the United States in the Constitution. So, what you wrote is pretty much irrelevant to that question. There are many Evangelicals who have pledged to support Romney, and even Mike Huckabee and Billy Graham have openly endorsed Romney in spite of what they think about Mormons and their religion.

              But, now to your comments.

And Mormons believe that Joseph Smith (after failing to find the buried treasure of Capt. Kidd), suddenly was given some golden plates by an angel named Moroni who told him to start this new religion.

They don't believe that he was suddenly given the plates of the Book of Mormon. Their own text states that it was a period of several years before he could get them after being told about them. Joseph Smith had already seen his first vision in 1820. The treasure business came afterward because of his reputation of being able to find lost things. He also demonstrated that he could read a book with his back to it and his head buried in a hat. So, he got supporters who hired him to look for treasure. He needed the money so he worked for a fellow. He tried to tell the guy he was wasting his time looking for the treasure.

Some years later, he got the plates and showed them to 11 people using two methodologies. Three were shown them in vision; eight others saw the plates and handled them. And, according to Mormon beliefs it was not Moroni who told him to start a new religion. Their texts state that it was Jesus Christ himself who instructed him to do so.

And they believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers.

You are taking this belief out of context. They believe that Jesus, Lucifer, and the spirits of all mankind are children of God who are brothers and sisters. The Bible does, after all, speak of the Father as the "Father of spirits" or "Father of our spirits" and that "we are the offspring of God." The Mormons take that literally.

And they believe that you can have an eternal marriage ceremony done here on earth and be married to that same person forever in heaven, which of course, is in direction opposition to the holy scriptures where Jesus said people are not married in heaven.

Yes they do believe that families can be together forever. And, it is only interpretation of the passages in the Bible that is the opposite direction of Mormon beliefs on this subject. A careful reading reveals another interpretation that does not conflict with their beliefs on that subject. Read the Matthew version of the passage very carefully. Mark's is in close agreement with Matthew. Luke's version is third-hand at best and contains several theological quandaries of its own.

A literal reading of that Matthew passage from the Greek shows that Jesus was addressing a specific group of people (the seven brothers and the wife who were with the askants of the question) and that there will be no wedding ceremonies and festivities in the resurrection. The Mormons don't see that as a problem because they believe all their eternal marriage ceremonies have to be done before the resurrection. If you don't do it before the resurrection, according to their beliefs, you are out of luck.

But, the moral of the story is: Maybe you should learn a little more about their beliefs and what they based them upon before pontificating about them.

And, you also should consider that religion has nothing to do with whether or not Romney will be a good president. That is the American way. Billy Graham supports Romney and has taken Mormons off the cult list. Try to keep up.

Harry Reid has stonewalled on every single bill that came to him from the House. He is just as guilty causing the gridlock as the Republicans. But it takes leadership to get both sides to work together and Obama has no ability in that department.

I have a feeling that if the republicans in Congress do not work for the good of the country, they will be cutting their own throat. Two years isn't that long to the next election. If the country doesn't see the republicans and the Democrats working together to help fix what the republicans did to this country, I hope they get bulldozed into the ground so deep that they can't get out of it for 20-30 years. It'd be nice to keep the republicans out of power for that long. We Democrats would have the country back to where it's supposed to be without republican interference. Maybe then they would appreciate this country and it's people more. I'm talking ALL the people not just the privileged few. So if the republicans do retain control of Congress, they are forewarned. Do your job or face the anger of the people. The people can only be fooled for so long and then they will revolt. I'm looking forward to 2014.

The Republicans got the House in the first place because the Democrats botched our finances so badly, and since then they've gone from bad to worse. Deficits that boggle the mind, no budget in how long now?, and no plan to bring spending in line with revenues. I wouldn't send another Democrat to the House if you paid me.

Your emotional feeling is wrong. Use your brain and read the legislation the Democrats have been trying to push through Congress that the Republicans have worked to stop. Read it carefully and see the harm it will do to the economy. See what it would do to the debt ceiling and the allowances for more spending that this legislation makes. See how the environment would be hurt as well as worsening of worker safety. See how it will raise the cost of gasoline to higher than $6/gallon. Many Republicans love money. Hurting the economy as well as the middle class is not in their best financial interests, either. Think about it.

What the dem supporters aren't smart enough to understand is political gamesmanship. the dems put forth this great sounding bill, put in all the emotional pulls and never, ever let on about the stinkbomb buried in the bill, said stinkbomb making it unpassable. Then, when the republicans refuse to pass the bill because of the stinkbomb, the dems wring their hands and point fingers and name call, all the while realizing that the bill was unpassable, and, had a republican put forth such a bill the dems would have killed it from the get go.

it's an old game, the democrats play well. Kind of like lobbing a hot potato at someone and when they drop it, they're called clumsy, stupid and anti-potato.

Exactly right! They do it with an underlying agenda. If they get Americans pissed off enough at Republicans, it makes it so that Democrats get more control of government. Each time they get control they send America down the tubes in a tailspin. They lay legislation all over the place to make for bigger government, and to bring down the economy at times opportune enough to move closer to the goal of their leadership. And, the people have fallen for it each and every time.

The sad thing is that they never left behind their ideal society of aristocrats and enslaved. It is illegal to enslave a single race but they have stumbled on a way to enslave half the country. Each time they get power it moves them closer to that idea. In order to accomplish it fully, however, they must bankrupt the country. That part of their agenda will be accomplished if Americans allow them to take control of all three branches of government. Most Americans don't even realize it is happening under their noses because it just sounds too outlandish and conspiracist.

But, look at each and every piece of legislation they have ever enacted up to now, and careful readers will see the pattern. It took their leaders several presidencies from Carter to Obama to accomplish this much of their agenda but they are very patient. Continued deficit spending of the kind Obama and clan engages in will bring America to its knees, and the foreign powers to whom we owe considerable debt will give the order: "They cannot pay us. Come! Let us divide up the lands of the United States and exact payment in kind." Only, then, we will be too weak to defend ourselves.

Sounds like a conspiracy novel? We'll see. Time will tell.

Well said, KimV! The small manufacturing company for which I work is busier than ever; we just went to 6 / 10s. During the last year of W and the aftermath of his failed administration (for almost a year) we struggled, but we tightened our belts and rode out the storm. I think the attitude of the business owner and employees have a hell of a lot to do with whether a business fails or suceeds.

Those businesses b*tching and complaining about how bad things are send that message to their customers and their business suffers accordingly. President Obama's policies have helped us ... such as Obama's policy that the government (including the military) "buy American" whenever possible. Orders for the equipment we manufacture that had, under previous administrations, been purchased from Canada, Mexico, China, etc. by our government came knocking on our door.

For more than 10 years the owners have been trying to find reasonably priced health care insurance for the employees without much success. With "Obamacare" we are currently negotiating for plans that offer good coverage for a reasonable price. We all feel the same way - we pay for the healthcare for the "elected representatives" with our tax dollars, why shouldn't our tax dollars help pay for our own health care?

I think too many of these nay-sayers spend WAY too much time allowing themselves to be brainwashed by FAUX Entertainment.

It's all about turnout-go out and vote-the only way to get change is for EVERYONE who is eligible to vote. Every vote does count. The politicians will take us much more seriously if they know all of us are voting. They take the lack of full turnout as permission to do as they please, especially the GOP, because they have no fear of an indifferent electorate.

Vote the GOP out to a man-that will stop the voter suppression. The dirty tricks need to stop. Our right to vote is so important that any party trying to interfere with that right needs to be taught a major lesson.

--Federal Court: Obama Appointees Interfered With Prosecution in New Black Panther Voter Intimidation Case

A federal court in Washington, D.C., ruled that a number of President Obama’s political appointees within the U.S. Department of Justice did in fact interfere with the prosecution of two New Black Panther party members who were videotaped holding a night stick and intimidating voters outside a Philadelphia voting station back in 2008.

Following a brief investigation into the 2008 New Black Panthers Case, the Department of Justice filed charges. However, the Panthers didn’t respond and a federal court in Philadelphia entered a “default” against all the defendants.

                Enter Obama.

Shortly after he became president, the DOJ quickly backpedaled and the charges against three of the New Black Panther party members were dropped and a fourth was let off with a restraining order.

Interesting how the dems on this site ignore the busloads of Somolians being trucked in by the dems and told how to vote, or how a democrat had to step down because he was caught telling people how to vote fraudulently.

Then there are the voting machines in Ohio that vote for Obama even though Romney was selected. The Obama Media isn't going to cover THOSE stories real seriously, can't have attention pointed in that direction, don'cha know.

Wow, that's a dark place you live in. I hope you don't drink heavily. Or if you do, that you don't have assault weapons in the closet.

I know it's useless, but just a feeble attempt to inject some sense of reality into the world you live in: even if "the media" were engaged in some overt conspiracy to elect Obama, there is no way that a verified (i.e. true) occurrence of 'voting machines in Ohio that vote for Obama even though Romney was selected' would not be shouted from the rooftops by every Republican in Washington.

Are they doing that? Let's tune in: nope, they're busy being offended that Obama used the word 'revenge'. Are the republicans involved in the conspiracy too?

Your hero Ronald Reagan said 'trust and verify'. You got the first part down, need a little work on the second.

                  #5.10 - Sat Nov 3, 2012 8:26 PM EDT

And your hero said "Transparency". Well, that just ain't so. He also said he would cut the deficit in half. Again; not so.

Maybe you need to keep up with the crap your own "Hero" spews instead of being concerned with other people. And.......... did you even check out the link? http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2012/11/03/Electronic-Voting-Machines-In-Battleground-States-Switching-Romney-Votes-For-Obama

Ahhh, but I did click the link. That was what my post was all about. WND is one of those dark conspiracy sites, where Glenn Beck and Donald Trump are prophets, Obama has a secret plan to destroy the US for his Muslim overlords, and nothing is as it seems. I am always amazed that people buy that stuff, but then, the National Enquirer is still publishing, so what can I say? Barnum said you can fool some people all of the time. Guess I have to agree.

Just for giggles I also clicked your link, which interestingly enough explained why mygirl's dark conspiracy theory is not a republican talking point. Everyone with an iPhone touchscreen is familiar with the frustration of trying to type a letter and getting a different one, and even Breitbart isn't dishonest enough to suggest that such errors favor one candidate over another.

BTW, I've never been a fan of touchscreens, especially when doing something important like voting, because they are sloppy and prone to error. But this is what we're getting these days, so be careful.

I also remember The democrat women in congress on this rant until it was shown THEY where some of the worst offenders on equal pay. So I guess both side are guilty of using women on this issue

I see the new conservatives selling FEAR! They wield FEAR as a weapon, and scare the BEEGEEBERS out-ah folks who should know better.

And no, I don't believe the new conservative, ultra-right, tea bagger loonies are Republican either. I don't know WHAT Michelle Bachman is, but in my Republican Party, she would have been laughed out of the House and censured for blind stupidity.

How about....if we EVER send our military to fight another war....that we ALL pitch in to support the effort and EVERYONE has to sacrifice a bit for the common good. How about clean bills through congress with NO riders and NO "pork". Sentaor McCain was calling for that back when he was true a maveric. How about passing a Constitutional ammendment "Congress shall pass NO LAW for which they are exempt" Why not have elections built on a vision and a clear plan for success? Otherwise, yes, a vote should be a vote for a single and specific topic. Too often we attack the other side for voting down a bill, when they were actually voting against some stupid rider to the bill. Want to vote on a womens health issue? Yes, bigdog, if I think they can do a better job. But also keep in mind, many people feel that Obama has lied too. I know, shocking, right?

No taxes on poor people? Well, smoking disproportionately impacts low income people. Obama raised federal taxes on cigarettes within a month of becoming president.

And my favorite, will he enforce DOMA? He said he would. And, how does he define marriage? That sure has changed in the past four years.

They all lie. They're human. Are you proposing that Obama never lies? That would be rediculous. Also, keep in mind that one persons lie is anothers perspective. You may think they are all lies, but full context, which we usually don't get, may just open your eyes to the reality.

In short, if all you have is "Mitt Lies" then you might as well not vote at all, because so does Obama.

Because they are conservatives in name only. They know that the governors will take every dime from the feds they can and cut services along with giving big business tax cuts. Makes them look good until they step on the peoples throats with bills like the Emergency Manager Act or cutting public service unions throats. Vote no on 1, 5 and 6. Yes on 2,3 and 4.

on the middle, Mitt doesn't lie. He just etch-a-sketches. He will tell you one thing, then tell the next group he is talking to the complete opposite. Obama's lies are consistent. That would then look like perspective.

                                Obama/Biden/Duckworth (to take out Walsh)

Walsh will lose and Tammy will beat Tommy in Wisconsin.

Maquette poll, which is right leaning, has Obama leading 51% to 43% by likely voters. The Marquette poll was very accurate during the Walker recall.

From Personal Knowledge: Mitt Romney while at BAIN, put two of my uncles out of work, they had worked for 35 years and 42 years on their job, and ROMNEY, took their RETIREMENT, one uncle lost his home because not being able to find a job that paid what he was making, he worked two jobs after MITT gone through with him. He moved in with his sister, but he never got over losing his job. He was a great person. He was the very best relatives you could ask for, and if ROMNEY would that to my family, in my opinion, he does not deserve to be PRESIDENT, because, he would out source AMERICA, the man is not fit to be an AMERICAN, much less PRESIDENT. I know the devastation he cause in so many lives of relatives and friends. NO REPUBLICAN will get my vote this year. If you don't believe me, fine, I know, so that is all that matters. But I can tell you this, if there is any way to put the AMERICAN US Treasury in his pocket ROMENY will find a way.

Lady, Do you have any clue how many jobs Clinton's policies sent out of our country? And don't give me this "he had a surplus" garbage. A surplus in the governments budget meant tax payers were charged to much. That's not a good thing.

Romney was a business man, responsible for making the best decisions given his role. I have absolute faith that as the president he will make the same quality of decisions for the entire country. The question is this, when he is successful and Americans are back to work, will you be "man enough" to admit you were wrong?

LadyJag ... Yup, and this is the man who would be king ... er ... CEO ... er ... lord and master ... whatever, of the United States! You know; SAINT ROMNEY! He Likes to fire people who work for him. He doesn't care for half of the citizens he claims to want to represent, we are just not willing to take responsibility for ourselves and we think we are victims. See, that's how he consoled himself when he did all those rotten things to American workers ... he told himself that it was the WORKERS fault, that if they had been saints, like him, and taken responsibility for their lives, those bad things wouldn't have happened to them.

Americans, for the most part are pretty smart people and they see through Romney's corporate veil. He is a snarky, lying frat boy who cares ONLY for himself and those in his same socio-economic circle.

The unfortunate thing is that these Republicans will still hate, lie, misrepresent and obstruct. Some of the posters seem so proud of the 2010 elections. And lets face it, they have a deep bullpen. They have so much talent to draw on. Bachman, Perry, Santorium, Cain, Akin, McDonough, O'Donnell, Engel, Gingrich, Trump, the list goes on. Skilled and intelligent Politicians one and all.

So we have our work cut out for us. So come 2014 we need to come up with more Warrens and Duckworths. Kick these tea bagging, american taliban fools out of the House and Senate, Take back our Country and move foward.

Mitt Romney said: On day one, I will outsource the call center for food stamps (bridge card) to China. We will save 99% in wages right there and so many won't be able to understand Mandarin, they won't be able to keep the card. My day one is going to be so full I had to move building 300 ships to day two. Please don't tell anyone those ships are either on the drawing board or being built right now...

in the middle, are you for, or are you not for paying down the national debt? If there was a surplus, it doesn't mean we are paying too much. It means Clinton's AND the republicans policies were working. That surplus was going to pay down the debt as well as pay for some much needed infrastructure business need to do business efficiently, like road repairs, bridges, water systems and power grids. Only after the debt was paid down should tax cuts have happened. Paying the debt isn't/wasn't as simple as just going to the note holder and hand them money for the note back, they had to expire first.

Americans voting for their Representative could mean that the 7% approval rating for Congress is too high.

Allowing Americans to vote seems more and more like giving up the practice of having running children carry open scissors, but instead have them play a new game of wrist slashing with straight razors.

This should reduce the Congress's approval even further but maybe the 7% approval rating for Congress was really wasn't meant to describe Congress at all. It is possible that the 7% rating was for American Voter themselves a clear sign of a low status condition. This makes more sense than expecting Congress to actually be the best and brightest choice to Represent all the Voters. The voter is in effect disapproving of their self and is just so honest about their shortcomings that they are willing to vote for the first class loser that most closely represents their self. This explains the lack of any constructive being done in Congress because the fearful voter would not want the responsibility to actually do anything either. (Do nothing Congress genuinely represent the Do Nothing Voter.)

Since the voters have so little respect for themselves we cannot expect them to make straight forward rational choice at the poll, but is playing different game entirely.

This is just 'fear of responsibility' by the voter, who in fearing a responsibility that could cause the voter harm if he actually made an informed choice, to throw the 7% Congress out; fearing that additional decisions might be need to guide a new congress person being one result. (Don't blame me Blame the other guy, combined with don't ask me either.)

The Voter in this election is probably selecting the worst possible candidate, knowing full well that the Voter will need someone else to blame when things don't work out. Americans indeed make a life out of avoiding responsibility.

This is a self-condemning exercise, if the voter from a district were forced into a line for say the executioner, then their choice to be at the head of the line would be their chosen representative. The voter would want to move back further back in the line, to avoid blame.

Now that we have been told this we can and will vote for the least qualified candidate in the least qualified party.

NOW THAT WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS WE CAN AND WILL VOTE FOR THE LEAST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE IN THE LEAST QUALIFIED PARTY.

Americans are just not very good a facing problem down before it occurs, always preferring to wait until they really get clobbered. The fear strategy used to retain power in Congress always works; fear is one item that preserves the status quo.

Returning this Congress to Again to power will be living proof that Americans just don't know what they are doing.

unless this 2-party system is replaced, nothing will change.

Obama's hope and change have been replaced by status quo he promised to destroy 4 years ago. what an irony! it's too bad that some still believe him, and rather to give him 4 more years and expect a different result from him. how ignorant people can be really?

Cellisis, the problem is not that Obama didn't change enough, but that Romney won't even try.

Yes Robme is running on his record.

He will not release his taxes because they will show that he took that amnesty for tax cheaters.

He had 707 of his vetoes overturned when he was governor. So much for bipartisanship.

He was known as the pioneer of outsourcing while running Bain Capital, which is shipping a factory to China right now.

                                      That is Romney's record.

What will happen is President Obama will ask Reid to go ahead and let the bills come up for a vote. If any passes with the poison pills in them, he will veto them. The republicans won't have the 2/3rds needed to over-ride them. He will also write signing veto statements describing why he vetoed them.

Oh, and the other possibility could be President Obama agreeing with the republican house on everything. They will then do a 180 and pass exactly what the president wants.

There's not even a 1% chance of the Democrats taking the House.

This Election is Only About How Much the Democrats Are Going to Lose. The Presidency? 1 senate seat? 2? 3? Majority control of the Senate?

Obama stays in the White House.

Dems pick up 2 Senate seats.

Dems pick up 10 to 12 House seats.

                                          A) Possible

                                          B) Very Unlikely

                                          C) Almost Impossible.

But, the idea of "taking the House" is not even worth discussing.

                                          C) there was not discussion about picking up the House, but they will gain some seats there. unfortunately we will be stuck with John "Crybaby" Boner as House Majority Leader for at least 2 more years.

Yikes! And people with these thoughts vote! The meaning of this statement is that Obama did not capitulate to the Tea Party.

Obama not only didn't capitulate to the Tea Party, he didn't capitulate to John Boehner, He didn't capitulate to his own Simpson-Bowles commission, he didn't capitulate to any serious cuts in his massive federal government expenditure or any serious reductions in his huge deficits.

And the Tea Party did not capitulate to the democrats, including President Obama. But the Tea Party did influence the 2010 election and they will have their say again on Tuesday.

Bottom line is that Republicans want a smaller, leaner government. Democrats believe government should take care of most our needs.

We can't keep spending and think we can pay for it by more taxes on the rich. Everybody will eventually have to pay with higher taxes or reduced services. Pick your poison.

But the republicons want to eliminate FEMA!

Funny thing is, just a few short years ago many Democrats wanted to get rid of it because it was a waste of government resources. How soon people forget.

Try to keep up. Mitt Romney does not want to eliminate FEMA. That is a Democrat propaganda piece. What he wants to do is to put more responsibility for disaster relief on the States for faster response times and more accountability.

Here is the latest from Romney:

“I believe that FEMA plays a key role in working with states and localities to prepare for and respond to natural disasters,” Romney said in a statement. “As president, I will ensure FEMA has the funding it needs to fulfill its mission, while directing maximum resources to the first responders who work tirelessly to help those in need, because states and localities are in the best position to get aid to the individuals and communities affected by natural disasters.”

So much for his desire to get rid of FEMA entirely...

The past 4 years, GOP has spent more time and money to repeal the Obama healthcare reform than passing the bills for creating more jobs to help the unemployed and to stimulate the economy.

GOP's reluctant care about the people is so obvious that evidently showing on the record of the passed bills in which they are reluctant to pass bill than any Congress in any decade; the GOP-controlled Congress has delayed either to pass bill or to discuss the bill.

Please vote for Democrats and re-elect President Obama/Biden 2012.

DesertKing...sorry, but after the Republicans did nothing the past four years to help President Obama or even cooperate a little with him for the good of the USA - and the country is still slowly regaining what it lost solely because of President Obama's efforts - I'm voting for him, and anyone else who was with the president.

You haven't read the legislation the Dems are upset about being blocked, have you? If anyone is trying to sabotage the American economy, it is the Dems for running the economy into the ground with high deficit spending. You should take a good, close and hard look at each piece of legislation that the Dems have been trying to push through. Are you ready to pay more than $6/gallon for gasoline? If the recent legislation had been allowed to pass, that is what you and all Americans would end up paying. Have you any idea what that will do to the economy in its fragile state? The prices of everything would go up in addition, further burying Middle Class America.

Were you aware that the Dems were trying to push through legislation that would make it possible for people to hold oversight positions even in cases of conflicts of interest? That they were trying to push through legislation that would make gasoline more expensive? That they were trying to use jobs legislation to repeal laws that deal with worker and environmental safety? That they were trying to use jobs legislation to raise the debt ceiling, increase spending even further and change the trigger amounts in association from $1,500,000,000,000 to $1,950,000,000,000? That they were trying to create new government bureaucracy just to decide which five states out of fifty would be eligible for aid in veteran's affairs and jobs? That the Dems were trying to stop debate and pass bills that are harmful to the economy by invoking cloture, and that that is what really have been blocked were the cloture motions?

They don't want debate on the legislation they try to pass. They don't want Americans to understand what it is that they are trying to do to America. The Republicans in office do understand what is going on and they are trying to prevent passage of any bill that will increase spending or hurt America's economy further.

Read all the legislation and voting records and see for yourself! Make sure you understand it all. Once you do, you will turn around and thank the Republicans for what they are doing. The Dems are trying to sabotage the economy by raising the cost of living for the middle and lower classes, and they are doing it disguised as jobs and veterans legislation. Reid needs to be deposed from office. He has already stated in public fora that he will refuse to work with anybody to accomplish anything for the next two or more years if Obama does not get elected to a second term. He has stated that he will obstruct the workings in Congress. And, it will not be to protect anyone. It is his plan for petty revenge that he could not get his agenda passed and legislated, and nothing more.
