In Sandy's wake, candidates back to aggressive campaigning

President Barack Obama leaned on the power of incumbency in his first campaign event after Hurricane Sandy, striking a unifying tone at a late-morning rally in Wisconsin while ridiculing GOP nominee Mitt Romney's effort to seize the mantle of "change."

"After four years as president, you know me by now," said Obama, who jogged down the stairs of Air Force One to the waiting crowd in Green Bay.

President Obama will be going to Ohio every day before the election – a state where he is currently polling ahead of Mitt Romney. GOP contender Romney will be stopping only twice in Ohio and then twice in New Hampshire where he appears to be in the lead. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

"Let me tell you, Wisconsin: we know what change looks like," the bomber jacket-clad president said at another point in the speech. "And what the governor is offering sure ain’t change."

The president and Romney each turned to their closing arguments for voters, just five days before Election Day and in the wake of a hurricane-induced campaign pause.

Speaking Thursday morning in Virginia, where he hadn't appeared in 15 days, Romney appealed to themes that have dominated his campaign for months. The former Massachusetts governor argued that the nation's economy couldn't withstand another four years of a Democrat in the White House.

A day after he toured storm-stricken New Jersey, President Obama resumed his campaign with an event in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

And Romney revived his experience in the private sector as his chief qualification versus Obama, seizing on a throwaway line from the president during a weekend interview on MSNBC about naming a "secretary of business."

"He’s got to find something to suggest it’s going to better over the next four years. And so he came up with an idea last week which his he’s going to create the department of business," Romney told a crowd of 3,000 in Roanoke. "I don’t think adding a new chair in his cabinet will help add millions of jobs on Main Street."

He added: "We don’t need a secretary of business to understand business we need a president who understands business, and I do."

GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney hits the campaign trail in Roanoke, Virginia criticizing President Obama's economic and energy policies.

The campaign resumed its aggressive tenor on Thursday after a more subdued tone in the wake of this week's hurricane. Romney and Obama's aides did battle in the press over the question of which candidate has momentum on his side entering the home stretch.

A series of NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls released early Thursday suggested the president has an advantage in Iowa, but faces tighter contests with Romney in New Hampshire and Wisconsin (a reliably blue state which Republicans have sought to put in play this cycle).

In his bid to overtake the president, Romney revived his assertion that he was the candidate of "change" -- taking direct aim at the sentiment that propelled Obama's 2008 election.

President Barack Obama waves at supporters during a campaign rally at Austin Straubel International Airport in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on November 1, 2012.

"We need real change. For real change we’re going to have to take a different course," Romney said. "And I think that’s what Americans are going to do on Nov. 6."

That assertion earned Romney a rebuke from Obama, who accused his Republican opponent of masquerading familiar Republican proposals as new and fresh.

"In the closing weeks of this campaign, Gov. Romney has been using all his talents as a salesman to dress up these very same policies that failed our country so badly, the very same policies we've been cleaning up after for the past four years," Obama said.

David Goldman / AP

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney waves as he takes the stage for a campaign event at a window and door factory, Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, in Roanoke, Va.

The president launched into an almost wistful look back at his first term in arguing his case for a second. He acknowledged that not all Americans agreed with his positions, but, "You know what I believe, you know where I stand."

Obama's event also allowed the president, in many ways, the opportunity to remind voters that is the acting commander in chief, including his more upbeat opening in Wisconsin talking about the hurricane.

"We've also been inspired these past few days -- because when disaster strikes, we see America at its best. All the petty differences that consume us in normal times, all seem to melt away," he said. "There are no Democrats or Republicans during a storm -- they're just fellow Americans."

In the final push in the 2012 presidential election, candidates Mitt Romney and Barack Obama make their last appeals to voters.

The storm continued to cast a pall over the campaign, though the sharp rhetoric returned to normal. But Ann Romney reached a moment of levity in Ohio when asking voters to donate to the Red Cross via text message, using a number that became associated with one of her husband's Republican primary foes.

"What does that remind you of? Herman Cain's 9-9-9!" she said to laughter. "You can remember that."

If they win, I shall label it:

"Triumph of the Swill".

They started their campaign with an ad that lied about welfare-to-work, and they're ending it with an ad that lies about Jeep.

elliot, that Governor Christie sure didn't complain about Obama showing up in his state, did he?

A Presidential security team in NYC is bad on a normal day, let alone with the traffic nightmare, but an hour-long tour of the Jersey coast may provide some starting points for the Corps of Engineers.

Only a sick, sad partisan hack would say bad things about Obama going to Jersey....but that's you, isn't it, elliot?

MYTH America does need a "secretary of business" or you either. America is not a business it's a democracy.

When Team Romney has to photoshop larger rally crowds, do we still call it momentum?

http://underthemountainbunker.com/2012/10/28/when-team-romney-has-to-photoshop-larger-rally-crowds-do-we-still-call-it-momentum/

How about MYTH buying canned goods from Wal-mart under the guise of his rabid supporters giving donations just for a photo-op ;despite the fact the RED CROSS asked to not donate food.

I read some where only 200 of his minions showed up. I not sure if it's correct since it was on the web.

Cruisin’ to Victory

From the article above:

"In the closing weeks of this campaign, Gov. Romney has been using all his talents as a salesman to dress up these very same policies that failed our country so badly, the very same policies we've been cleaning up after for the past four years," Obama said.

Exactly, Mr. President. And the Majority of Americans recongnize this as well.

No more FAILED Republican policies. No more FAILED House of Representatives. No more FAILED stealing from the poor and giving to the rich class warfare. No more FAILED Trickle Down Ecomomics.

More good news today that will propel the President to VICTORY;

Jobless claims fall more than expected to 363,000.

Businesses created 158,000 jobs in October.

Wall Street back on-line and showing gains today.

President Obama leading in Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Nevada, and he’s going to win Colorado and yes, Florida too.

The President will win easily with over 300 Electoral Votes.

It’s over for the Tea Party Troll nation.

Buh Bye.

President Obama will be re-elected.

November 6th, 2012. The day the Tea Party died.

Yes the USA is a republic vs. a true democracy, but most citizens don't understand either one of the terms.

from www.c4cg.org:

Republic vs. Democracy

Rule by Law vs. Rule by Majority

Just after the completion and signing of the Constitution, in reply to a woman's inquiry as to the type of government the Founders had created, Benjamin Franklin said, "A Republic, if you can keep it."

Not only have we failed to keep it, most don't even know what it is.

A Republic is representative government ruled by law (the Constitution). A democracy is direct government ruled by the majority (mob rule). A Republic recognizes the inalienable rights of individuals while democracies are only concerned with group wants or needs (the public good).

Lawmaking is a slow, deliberate process in our Constitutional Republic requiring approval from the House, Senate, Executive (President or Governor), The Supreme Court, and individual jurors (jury-nullification). Lawmaking in our unlawful democracy occurs rapidly requiring approval from the whim of the majority as determined by polls and/or voter referendums. Voter referendums allow legislators to blame bad law on the people. A good example of democracy in action is a lynch mob.

Democracies always self-destruct when the non-productive majority realizes that it can vote itself handouts from the productive minority by electing the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury. To maintain their power, these candidates must adopt an ever-increasing tax and spend policy to satisfy the ever-increasing desires of the majority. As taxes increase, incentive to produce decreases, causing many of the once productive to drop out and join the non-productive. When there are no longer enough producers to fund the legitimate functions of government and the socialist programs, the democracy will collapse, always to be followed by a Dictatorship.

Even though nearly every politician, teacher, journalist and citizen believes that our Founders created a democracy, it is absolutely not true. The Founders knew full well the differences between a Republic and a Democracy. They repeatedly and emphatically said that they had founded a Republic.

Article IV Section 4, of the Constitution "guarantees to every state in this union a Republican form of government".... Conversely, the word Democracy is not mentioned even once in the Constitution. Madison warned us of the dangers of democracies with these words,

"Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths...",

"We may define a republic to be ... a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of the people, and is administered by persons holding their offices during pleasure for a limited period, or during good behavior. It is essential to such a government that it be derived from the great body of the society, not from an inconsiderable proportion or a favored class of it; otherwise a handful of tyrannical nobles, exercising their oppressions by a delegation of their powers, might aspire to the rank of republicans and claim for their government the honorable title of republic." James Madison, Federalist No. 10, (1787)

"A wise man will not leave the right to the mercy of chance, nor wish it to prevail through the power of the majority. There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men." Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

Note that critical line in Madison's comments:...otherwise a handful of tyrannical nobles, exercising their oppressions by a delegation of their powers,...

Yesterday was not a day for partisanship in the state of New Jersey. Yesterday, Governor Christie and Obama merely did their jobs, and nothing more. I seriously doubt that Christie has joined, or now supports the Obama-Shama-Lama-Ding-Dong team.

The only thing I would criticize Obama for is that, if this was truly just a President doing his job, then their should be no photography or press coverage. Otherwise, it could be construed as a publicity stunt. Which, quite frankly, knowing Obama as we do, it probably was.

We mustn't lose focus on the four (4) lives that were lost in Benghazi as a result of the Obama administration's refusal to provide additional security for our consulate. Nor, should we forget the LIES that Obama and his people told for nearly a month after the incident occurred.

Bev, actually its a Republic.

The Soviet Union was a republic, China is a republic. Most governments are republics but how many are democratic republics? The United States of America is and always has be a democratic republic. Imperial Rome was a republic too but hardly democratic. Business, by it's very nature is generally not a republic nor democratic. Not much business would be done if they had to vote on every decision made by management or the managers sent representatives to vote on their behalf.

A Plutocrisy may or may not be a republic and probably wouldn't be very democratic. Feudal European kingdoms weren't either democracies or republics and Fascism tends to be neither democratic nor a republican form of government either. Frankly I like the idea of a democratic republic as a form of government.

I'm not sure how you don't already understand this, but let me explain something to you. The United States isn't a business. And Romney's business experience is just that. His company bought lots of businesses, borrowed heavily from them so that he and his partners could get their hefty payouts, then when those businesses could not survive with the heavy debt burden, they filed for bankruptcy. Even aside from the fact that, while legal, this is completely immoral in my book - they profited at the expense of all Americans who pay for bankruptcies, but how does this give him any experience whatsoever to handle a financial crisis of a country? He can't just take his payout and jump ship on our country (well...knowing his ethics, I'm not ruling that out). His business experience gives him no understanding or knowledge to be president. He was pretty much a failure as governor of Mass. His own state sure doesn't want him to be president. That should be very telling.

So it is obvious that someone like Obama that doesn't understand business, and in fact has disdain for private sector business, is not going to support policies that businesses need. So you end up with an economy like we currently have. Obama policies have failed.

Romney understands business and since the economy cannot exist WITHOUT the private sector business it only makes sense that Romney would be the president that can FIX this economy. If you don't understand that then there is nothing more I can do to help you.

“A majority of Americans believe that Democratic President Barack Obama will win re-election Tuesday next week over Republican challenger Mitt Romney, by 54% to 34%,” the survey said, adding that 11 percent of the polled had no opinion on the issue.

This poll was taken before Sandy made landfall.

...it is obvious that someone like Obama that doesn't understand business, and in fact has disdain for private sector business, is not going to support policies that businesses need

That is just patently stupid on the face of it. Obama has been a pro-corporate President, just like every other President has ever been. It's not even an argument. "Disdain." Ridiculous.

      Elliot-

I check out your crappy Goose-Stepping Fascist websites, and as usual YOU LIE.

      Courtesy of The Foundry:

So it should be no surprise that President Obama claimed in a Morning Joe interview that he would appoint a Secretary of Business in a second term.

      Courtesy of ABC News:

“I don’t think adding a new chair in his cabinet will help add millions of jobs on Main Street,” said Romney, later adding, “We don’t need a Secretary of Business to understand business we need a president who understands business and I do!”

Courtesy of The Wall Street Journal:

President Barack Obama signaled if he wins a second term he would appoint a Secretary of Business to oversee newly-consolidated government agencies, including the Small Business Administration, and predicted “a war” will break out within the Republican Party after the Nov. 6 election.

“We should have one Secretary of Business, instead of nine different departments that are dealing with things like giving loans to SBA or helping companies with exports,” Mr. Obama said in an interview that aired Monday on MSNBC. “There should be a one-stop shop.”

      Sorry Elliot.

Once again, a Liberal proved YOU are all liars.

THERE IS NO DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS!

      IT’S SECRETARY OF BUSINESS!

      YOU LIE!

This is just one of their many propaganda talking points. They are so desperately trying to get us to vote for a guy that their own party didn't even want, but sadly he bought more ad time than the others and won the primary, over a president who has done a fine job of getting our country back on track. Really no point arguing with someone like this. They are stuck in "vote republican even if it distroys the country" mode.

SmBusOwner/Sally: All you have to do is look at the economic data, talk with business owners, and see that businesses are not investing. We have over a trillion dollars that businesses are holding and not investing. Why? Because they don't like the anti-business policies.

You see your comments are naive. If you want to tell me that Obama is pro-business and business owners are happy with the direction and policies of this company then you have to show me 4% to 6% GDP growth, a 5% or less unemployment, and massive business expansion. But you can't. All you can show me is an anemic 2% GDP, unemployment STILL near 8%, 40% increase in Food Stamp participants, and businesses worried they cannot survive in this anti-business climate and policies.

All you have to do is talk to business owners which I do on a daily basis. All you have to do is read the Department of Commerce reports. All you have to do is read business magazines like the Wall Street Journal and Investor's Guide. You see it is simple to see and all you have to do is open your eyes.

Tom: Do you have to be so naive? When you have a Secretary of Commerce that person MUST oversea a department - called the Department of Commerce. You CANNOT have a Secretary of Business and not have a Department to which this person is the Secretary of!! Just because Obama didn't SAY Department of Business doesn't mean there is not going to be one.

Obama said he would "consolidate" thus, supposedly, some departments would "close" and consolidate to a NEW department called the Department of Business. But we all KNOW government doesn't know how to consolidate. So a NEW Department of Business will be created and a Secretary of Business appointed. THEN we will find out the OTHER departments are still needed.

      Right, NoBusiness, economic data.....

Reagan-Bush quadrupled the national debt in three terms. Bush II went from a projected -$0- debt by 2010 to -$10T by 2008 instead.

.....and I rest my case on Republicans vs. Democrats.

I am a business owner, so I don't think it's me that is naive.

The economy is still tenuous, so business is waiting for some kind of signal to spend the money. My opinion is that if Republicans nutted up and helped instead of hindering America, business would spend that hoarded money and the economy would be fine in 6 months. I don't know what they're holding out for (either business or the Republicans).

PS, speaking of business intrusions, such as healthcare, I would love to have Medicare for all. Business would be SO much better off not having to deal with THAT...and we'd be so much more competitive in the world where other countries' businesses don't have that cost.

If , If you had ever owned any business you would know that every thing takes a permit or is taxed, and taxed then taxed at the end of the year if you don't sell it.

I should know we had to close our restaurant down to 3 days a week, and we had to lay off half our staff. Why because we can't afford to keep paying other people aka the government for things they have not helped make or worked for.

And to hear Romney carry on about how he'll "work across the aisle" to get things done, unlike Obama, would be laughable if it weren't such a blatant, disgusting lie. Right Mitt, you'll work across the aisle like the righties in Congress are doing now, like refusing to even consider bills in the House, and filibustering more bills than any Senate in the history of the world. Mitt, you and your righty cohorts don't know the meaning of the word bipartisanship. Your one and only objective has been to keep Obama from winning a 2nd term, even if it impedes the creation of jobs, and prevents any efforts to improve the lives of Americans.

BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLAAAAAAAAAA...

90% of America had their mind made up who they were going to vote for a year ago, and more than likely have not changed their mind. Lifelong Republicans vote Republican or stay home. Lifelong Democrats vote Democrat or stay home. A very small sliver of the population actually vote on the issues, and of those, most only vote on issues that affect their area. Screw how the candidate affects everyone else.

A coal miner in West Virginia out of work? They would vote for a Neo-Nazi KKK imperial wizard if he promised to deregulate the coal industry. Never mind if he rallies to repeal the civil rights laws.

A resident of Arizona who hates people that can't pass the "brown paper bag" test? (Referring to the shade of their skin.) They would vote for a sock puppet if it promised ultra-strict immigration reform.

A tree hugging hippy who feels that all cars and industry should be shut down immediately because it is disturbing the Zen energies of mother earth? They would vote for an LSD burnout that can't even spell his own name if he promises to clean up the earth.

Romney is about to be charged in court for violating the Federal Ethics in Government law.

In 2009, Ann Romney partnered with her husband's key donor, billionaire Paul Singer, who secretly bought a controlling interest in Delphi Auto, the former GM auto parts division. Singer's hedge fund, Elliott Management, threatened to cut off GM's supply of steering columns unless GM and the government's TARP auto bail-out fund provided Delphi with huge payments. While the US treasury complained this was "extortion," the hedge funds received, ultimately, $12.9 billion in taxpayer subsidies.

As a result, the shares Singer and Romney bought for just 67 cents are today worth over $30, a 4,000% gain. Singer's hedge fund made a profit of $1.27 billion and the Romney's tens of millions. G.Palast

It truly speaks to what a cluster@!$%# we have going down, that when Christie and Obama reach across the aisle in a time of need, they get crucified

What would you have them do? Say, "To hell with it, let those @!$%#s die"??? It isn't about Christie, and it isn't about Obama. It's about the constituents that need them. If some of you have lost the ability to see that, you need to read this...

“I can’t control what people think this was. I can only tell you my intentions. This was not a rally to ridicule people of faith or people of activism or to look down our noses at the heartland or passionate argument or to suggest that times are not difficult and that we have nothing to fear. They are and we do. But we live now in hard times, not end times. And we can have animus and not be enemies.

But unfortunately one of our main tools in delineating the two broke. The country’s 24 hour political pundit perpetual panic conflictinator did not cause our problems but its existence makes solving them that much harder. The press can hold its magnifying up to our problems bringing them into focus, illuminating issues heretofore unseen or they can use that magnifying glass to light ants on fire and then perhaps host a week of shows on the sudden, unexpected dangerous flaming ant epidemic.

If we amplify everything we hear nothing. There are terrorists and racists and Stalinists and theocrats but those are titles that must be earned. You must have the resume. Not being able to distinguish between real racists and Tea Partiers or real bigots and Juan Williams and Rick Sanchez is an insult, not only to those people but to the racists themselves who have put in the exhausting effort it takes to hate--just as the inability to distinguish terrorists from Muslims makes us less safe not more. The press is our immune system. If we overreact to everything we actually get sicker--and perhaps eczema.

And yet, with that being said, I feel good—strangely, calmly good. Because the image of Americans that is reflected back to us by our political and media process is false. It is us through a fun house mirror, and not the good kind that makes you look slim in the waist and maybe taller, but the kind where you have a giant forehead and an ass shaped like a month old pumpkin and one eyeball.

So, why would we work together? Why would you reach across the aisle to a pumpkin assed forehead eyeball monster? If the picture of us were true, of course, our inability to solve problems would actually be quite sane and reasonable. Why would you work with Marxists actively subverting our Constitution or racists and homophobes who see no one’s humanity but their own? We hear every damn day about how fragile our country is—on the brink of catastrophe—torn by polarizing hate and how it’s a shame that we can’t work together to get things done, but the truth is we do. We work together to get things done every damn day!

The only place we don’t is here or on cable TV. But Americans don’t live here or on cable TV. Where we live our values and principles form the foundations that sustains us while we get things done, not the barriers that prevent us from getting things done. Most Americans don’t live their lives solely as Democrats, Republicans, liberals or conservatives. Americans live their lives more as people that are just a little bit late for something they have to do—often something that they do not want to do—but they do it--impossible things every day that are only made possible by the little reasonable compromises that we all make.

Look on the screen. This is where we are. This is who we are. (points to the Jumbotron screen which show traffic merging into a tunnel). These cars—that’s a schoolteacher who probably thinks his taxes are too high. He’s going to work. There’s another car-a woman with two small kids who can’t really think about anything else right now. There’s another car, (referring to the Jumbotron blowing in the wind) swinging, I don’t even know if you can see it—the lady’s in the NRA and she loves Oprah. There’s another car—an investment banker, gay, also likes Oprah. Another car’s a Latino carpenter. Another car a fundamentalist vacuum salesman. Atheist obstetrician. Mormon Jay-Z fan. But this is us. Every one of the cars that you see is filled with individuals of strong belief and principles they hold dear—often principles and beliefs in direct opposition to their fellow travelers.

And yet these millions of cars must somehow find a way to squeeze one by one into a mile long 30 foot wide tunnel carved underneath a mighty river. Carved, by the way, by people who I’m sure had their differences. And they do it. Concession by conscession. You go. Then I’ll go. You go. Then I’ll go. You go then I’ll go. Oh my God, is that an NRA sticker on your car? Is that an Obama sticker on your car? Well, that’s okay—you go and then I’ll go.

And sure, at some point there will be a selfish jerk who zips up the shoulder and cuts in at the last minute, but that individual is rare and he is scorned and not hired as an analyst.

Because we know instinctively as a people that if we are to get through the darkness and back into the light we have to work together. And the truth is, there will always be darkness. And sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t the promised land. Sometimes it’s just New Jersey. But we do it anyway, together.

If you want to know why I’m here and want I want from you, I can only assure you this: you have already given it to me. Your presence was what I wanted.

Sanity will always be and has always been in the eye of the beholder. To see you here today and the kind of people that you are has restored mine. Thank you."

Elliot, people like you ARE HURTING MY COUNTRY.

Despite the attempts by the Obama administration to stonewall the questions regarding what really happened in Benghazi, every day new and more disturbing information is revealed that shows beyond a doubt that this is a cover-up of mind-boggling proportions. Unfortunately, in an attempt to circle the wagons around Obama's unbelievable narrative on these events, Democratic politicians are marching in lock-step with Obama's cover-up, leaving it up to the Republicans to ask the necessary questions, so that they can accuse the Republicans of "politicizing" the scandal.

I would like to encourage Democratic politicians to think through what will be the ultimate results of being accomplices to the President's cover-up. Don't they realize that the truth will emerge fully at some point? What do you think that will do to the credibility of the Democratic party when the American public realizes how the entire Democratic party attempted to mislead the American public?

Why did the Obama administration persist with the insane Youtube video pretext for weeks? Information is coming out now that those Americans who perished in Benghazi had desperately requested support that could have saved their lives and instead they were ordered to "stand down". Obama now claims that he issued the order to support those individuals, yet this obviously was not done. Either there's a serious incompetence that prevented this presidential "order" from being carried out, or (much more likely) Obama is now lying about having issued such an order. For the sake of their own credibility, Democratic politicians need to join their Republican colleagues in asking genuine questions about how the Obama administration mishandled what happened in Benghazi.

One of the more informed government officials on the Benghazi affair is Rep. Jason Chaffetz. One of the more thorough reporters working on this is Catherine Herridge. Yes, Chaffetz is Republican and Herridge is with FOX. I agree that it would be ideal if Democratic politicians and mainstream media reporters would be looking into this for the American public. That's precisely the point of what I'm saying above.

If the world's media outlets DON'T produce some evidence or corroborate anything the right wing media outlets are saying, you can only logically draw two conclusions...

                      1. There's a conspiracy so vast going on, that all of the globe's reporters and citizens, with the exception of America's relatively small right wing, is in on it.

                      or

                      2. Maybe what happened was tragic, and maybe LIKE ANY ADMINISTRATION, Obama's could have handled it better, but perhaps it's one of those things that just happen and there was no evil or malicious intent on the part of Obama.

Should there be full disclosure on what happened, ABSOLUTELY. Should the Obama administration be held accountable and made to fix (to the extent which they can) any problems this brings to light, ABSOLUTELY.

Should we take the time to fully discover what happened, look at non-partisan evidence, hold the situation up to the magnifying glass of cultural and historical context (both of the region and of past administrations), take into account the inner workings of presidential administrations and refrain from slandering our President when we have no non-partisan evidence, ABSOLUTELY.

                        Sarah,

I'm sorry that I replied to you, because obviously you have an ax to grind. The questions are the questions regardless of who's asking them or who's not. Frankly, it doesn't matter to me what is the consensus of the "international news media" or even if there IS a consensus on this matter. What matters is what information the American public is entitled to from their own president and the events leading up to what happened that were not acknowledged or explained by the Obama administration.

The point I made in my first post is that not just Republican public officials and FOX News should be asking these questions. If you criticize that, then your logic is very twisted and I'm not interested in your twisted logic.

So much for that civility. I didn't think asking for non-partisan evidence and consensus was considered grinding an ax. Why such a defensive response? Maybe because I didn't just blindly buy into everything you said???

The questions are the questions, and more then Fox is asking them...

I think the hurricane has officially sunk the Romney campaign. Polling in swing states (I live in one) wasn't looking good going into this, and now 3 - 4 days of Obama working with -- and bring praised by Romney's top surrogate, Chris Christie, is definitely nudging this further away from Republicans winning.

When something bad happens and the incumbent doesn't make it worse, it tends to (temporarily) elevate his standing in public opinion.

That's just the way it is.

Jules: The correction there is that you -- and those firmly on the Republican side of things, believe Obama's policies have failed. You're missing the larger point that there is an entire cross section of the voting public who aren't as firm in their beliefs (if they have them much at all), and this bodes very well for Obama within that group of people.

Well, Jack Colton - his policies have failed. You libs can deny it all you want; doesn't make it so. My problem with Obama is not his failed policies so much (I lived through Carter and that was horrible). My problem is that 1) he is a whine-butt. He does not take any responsibility for ANYTHING except killing Osama. Even at that, he gave the nod - wow what President wouldn't. Instead, he blames everyone else for the problems in America. The buck doesn't stop at HIS desk. Then, of course, the cover-up and the allowing of four Americans to die. At least Carter was a good man (even though inept), Obama is not a good man.

Which, like it or not, it does. You can spin that ten ways from Tuesday, but I don't think any reasonable person would argue against this at least somewhat helping Obama in the election.

Jules - please let us know which of Obama's policies have failed. Because I see a steadily recovering economy, a doubling of the stock market, many terrorists dead on his orders, unemployment steadily improving and so many more very successful policies. If this was a republican president you'd all be calling him a hero. I know, it just sucks when the guy you've sworn to hate is actually pretty good. He was able to take an economy in free fall, stabilize it, and turn it around. He didn't create this mess, but he has tried his hardest to fix it no matter how hard that is for you to accept. Why should he take the blame for something that happened when he wasn't in office? And he managed to do these things with a house that pledged on his first day that they would do everything they could to obstruct his leadership. Hypocritical and pathetic and you people stand blindly by and keep electing these people who would sooner see you homeless than let a democratic president succeed.

He will reverse Roe vs. Wade and they make sure even women who become pregnant as a result of Rape/Incest will not be able to obtain an abortion legally. They will get rid of FEMA, which as demonstrated this week is needed. I wonder what will be next on the Robmey agenda if elected....maybe women and minorities will lose the vote? Guess what people this country was built on women and minority groups doing all the hard work that the 1% didn't want to get dirty doing!

Actually, I've reached the conclusion that not only is Obama a failure, but he is a traitor and a murderer. He's directly responsible for the murder of a US Ambassador and 3 others in Libya. The entire administration and the "mainstream media" are complicit in the greatest coverup of murder the nation has ever seen. NBC is part of that conspiracy, as there has been absolutely no reporting on what happened, other than joining in the lie about a dumb video that no one saw being responsible. Just look at the facts: In June there was an attack on the Libyan consulate that blew a big hole in the wall. Request for additional security? Denied. In July a British convoy was attacked and the Seals responded. The Brits and the Red Cross pull out of Libya as being too dangerous. Aug. 16, 2012, a cable went to Sec. of State requesting more security and advising of AL-Qaeda bases around the consulate and that there are not enough security forces there and the Libyan police can't be trusted. Further warns that coordinated attack is being planned by Al-Queda. Request denied. Sept. 10, 2012, additional request for security and advising that they are "sitting ducks" there. Request denied. Sept. 11, 2012. Apparently Obama, Panetta, and other bigwigs were in the "situation room" at the WH watching live video feeds of attack and 3 requests over 7 hours for help? Denied! Navy Seals a mile away sought approval to provide assistance. Requests denied! STAND DOWN! Apparently, though, approval was given as Navy Seal Tyronne Woods was approved to "paint" the target where shells were coming from. He did so and the missiles never came. For those who don't know, Tyronne used a laser to do what they call "painting" the target so that a missile can be targeted there. In order to paint a target it is necessary that the one doing the painting aim a laser at the target and for the the origination point of the missile to be on the receive the information. Thus, a target cannot be painted without approval. As part of the painting, Tyronne necessarily exposed his location. The missile he expected never came and he was killed as a result. Biden was right, we won't see the wisdom of the things Obama does, and neither do these dead brave men.

Obama, Panetta and Clinton should be in jail, not in office for 4 more years.

I realize that you probably don't read the news, so you wouldn't be aware of what happened in Libya, but do you really think that if this had happened under a repubs administration that you and NBC and the rest of the mainstream media would have kept quiet this long and gone along with the "it's the video" explanation? jack colton: There's a major difference between the two. In 2001 they had a lot of information, but none of it was specific enough to know what, if anything would happen or exactly when it would happen. There were several reasons for that. One was the structure that was in place that prevented proper communications between various agencies. Heck, even though the laws were changed, it's still possible that there isn't as much communication as their should be as various "law enforcement" agencies are known to be very territorial and less than forthcoming with other agencies. Then, there was a whole country to protect. Bush didn't have the specifics and couldn't have stopped it any more than Clinton could have. Here, there wasn't that much that needed to be protected. If a Consulate says they're sitting ducks and need additional protection, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that you either provide the additional protection, or, do what the others did and get them the hell out of there. There is nothing that happened there that is excusable. Nor do I think that it would have happened under a repub administration. Heck, not even sure it would have happened under most dem administrations either. I just think Obama is totally inept and is such a narcissist that he really believes that his outreach and sweet talk really works against these thugs. He hasn't a clue what he is dealing with.

Witch: I think you are letting your politics cloud your better judgment. You can't make the argument that Bush couldn't have done anything, while ignoring that he didn't do anything about the briefings. That is a bit like the people who shout at the top of their lungs for Obama to provide passport applications (even though no other President has), but don't hold Romney anywhere close to the same requirements.

Again, reason and judgment being clouded by your politics.

I see a steadily recovering economy,

2% last year and 1.3% this year is a decline and is not enought to meet the needs of a growing population.

a doubling of the stock market,

QE 1, QE2, QE3 went to wall street. Everytime this has been anounced the stock market value went up so investors could get their share in whom the government favored.

BTW: Isn't that the ones Obama was supposed to beat up?

jack colton: OK, I admit I'm not as smart as you. We all know that Clinton didn't get Bin Ladan when he had the chance. We know that Bush didn't prevent 9/11. We know that the CIA didn't talk to the FBI. We know that the Clinton briefings were similar to the Bush briefings. Now, and as I say, you are smarter than me, what should Bush have done to prevent 9/11? Of course, you have to keep in mind that you are assuming that Bush did nothing and don't know that for a fact. After all, the only way to conclude that Bush did nothing was the fact that 9/11 happened the way it did. So, with no specific information that 9/11 was going to happen the way it did, what should Bush.... change that... what would you have done to prevent 9/11 from happening? Just asking because we all know that it is so easy to accuse someone of not doing something, kinda like asking a criminal defendant to prove they didn't commit the crime. Or, and I don't know who you voted for the last election, but please prove that you voted for who you claim you voted for. Your standard here is that if 9/11 happened then it's obvious that Bush did nothing to prevent it even though he had no information to indicate that 9/11 was going to happen. Of course, that is completely different than what happened in Libya because, all evidence pointed to something was going to happen and it was within a limited area.

Witch: While I do enjoy your snarky direct -- which truthfully implies you may not be as aware as you think you are, there is indisputable evidence about what Bush didn't do. His CIA Director at the time, Richard Clarke, has been extremely vocal about what went wrong, as well as the absolute failings of the administration to take action on clear evidence of an impending attack. He even wrote a book about it, detailing his personal attempts to get the Bush White House to do something prior to 9/11.

He was even given an intelligence briefing labeled "Bin Laden determined to strike in U.S. ! It doesn't get much clearer then that. Hypocrites.

Human - I don't know if Bush had any OVERT warnings about 9/11 - there were definitely dots that didn't get connected. Hindsight is always 20/20. How could anyone fathom these cretins taking our airplanes and using them as bombs? That is MUCH different than KNOWING that Benghzai was a hot bed for terrorist activity. The Ambassador emailed many times before 9/11 asking for more security - not granted. 9/11 was the anniversary of the attack on US soil by these animals; ambassador asked for more security for that day; major failure on Obama's part. Then, when the cries came for help during the 7 hour attack (with help being an hour away), this administration told them no. After the murder of these men, and Obama knew the attack was happening, he went to bed. Had to go campaign in Las Vegas. Then, the cover-up.......he's a loser with blood on his hands.

By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor (with Top US Intel Specialists)

A trained team of up to 120 special forces personnel with radio jammers and heavy weapons killed the US ambassador. There were only two America CIA employees in Libya. The news stories are all fabrications.

The killing of Ambassador Stephens in Benghazi has become a ghoulish election ploy played by Fox News, Huffington Post and others. All are printing and broadcasting conjecture, total falsehood and the usual biased and unreliable garbage they are famous for.

RF Jammer Trucks, Gaddafi Had Dozens in Libya

Neither publication/network has qualified intelligence and/or military advisors. To be former military and work for Fox is considered prostitution.

The ambush at Benghazi required careful coordination. There was no Al Qaeda involvement and there has never been any history of Al Qaeda on the ground in Libya. Moreover, intelligence insiders use the term “Al Qaeda” when looking for money from “congressional critters” too stupid to know that the CIA has always run “Al Qaeda” as a way of avoiding explaining why dozens of small organizations and even friendly intelligence groups will, for obscure reasons, attack American targets.

Fox reported that a large convoy of Libyan milita relieved the compound at 3AM but that there had been no aid until 4 AM:

They were killed by a mortar shell at 4 a.m. Libyan time, nearly seven hours after the attack on the consulate began — a window that represented more than enough time for the U.S. military to send back-up from nearby bases in Europe, according to sources familiar with Special Operations. Four mortars were fired at the annex. The first one struck outside the annex. Three more hit the annex.

A motorcade of dozens of Libyan vehicles, some mounted with 50 caliber machine guns, belonging to the February 17th Brigades, a Libyan militia which is friendly to the U.S., finally showed up at the CIA annex at approximately 3 a.m.

Generously one can call this kind of reporting inconsitencies. Either they are there or they aren’t, either it is 3am or 4am but not both.

Nothing is simple enough for congress and the American people, this is the belief. When in doubt…lie.

The attack in Benghazi was coordinated with the broadcast of the Terry Jones/CATO Institute/Tea Party telethon worldwide. Rioting broke out in Tripoli but not Benghazi.

Ambassador Stephens had a 6 man detail, former SEALS, all private contractors from L3 Communications, a British company contracted to supply diplomatic security.

The team used was one of the best in the world, equal to any normal task, and by normal, we mean “high risk.” This is standard State Department policy and those used were not only top quality operators but went through months of specialized training at Blackwater’s facilities here in the US.

The second problem was tied to the Ambassador being, not in the Capitol, Tripoli, but in Benghazi to open a museum. I am deeply suspicious of this and as the CATO Institute and State Department are “co-mingled,” it would have been easy for information on the movements of the ambassador and his team to have been telegraphed to the enemy forces who had been positioned in Benghazi.

The forces themselves were spotted at the Tripoli airport several days in advance. Some may have entered from Egypt and some from Tunisia but 50 had come in from the UAE and were identified as Special Forces, UAE Special Forces, who had completed an extensive training program by retired US Special Forces and through the specialized American school for “irregular warfare,” located 45 miles outside Budapest, Hungary.

The attack itself involved pre-positioning two levels of blockade, one tying up any possible relief in Benghazi a kilometer away and another setting up a perimeter about 200 yards around the compound. Streets were blocked and heavy weapons, RPGs, truck mounted anti-aircraft guns and large mortars were used.

Mortar fire was so accurate that the compound had to have been pretargeted in advance. The first round hit the roof of the main building in the compound of 7 homes, all with minimal security.

The primary reason for no additional forces to have been available was the controversy during the civil war. Anti-war activists and “anti-imperialists in the pay of the Gaddafi family along with David Welch of Bechtel Corporation and Israeli mercenaries and advisors, along with troops from across Africa, specialists from Serbia and Belarus and other nations, created something more than a “fog of war” but rather a “fog of truth.”

Paid “shills” working for Gaddafi continually warned of Americans coming into the country armed as an occupation force. Thus, when the war ended, no armed Americans were brought in, only one small team and two CIA agents.

There were 3 additional armed local militia members providing security for the CIA who could have reached Stephens except for the blocked communications, the blocked roads and being outnumbered 30 to one.

The US does maintain 2 C130 gunships in the region. These are slow moving transport aircraft stationed at times in Northern Sardinia but more often further away at Aviano in Italy, North of Venice.

These are Air Force planes, not Navy.

The gunships are extremely effective weapons and would have been of help had they been available, had they been called though all radio and telephone traffic was jammed as with the 1967 attack on the USS Liberty and had the personnel in need of support been stationary and secure with strobe markers to secure them from the 20mm, 40mm and 105mm weapons on the AC130.

Instead, we have been informed, a two pronged and highly coordinated attack drove the US group to a safe house, into vehicles and corralled them in a pre-positioned ambush where their vehicle was attacked by a “quad 50″ anti-aircraft gun mounted on the back of a truck.

Such a weapon could destroy a Bradley Armoured Personnel Carrier or shoot down an Apache attack helicopter.

What is clear is that help was not available, that America moved into Libya with a minimal presence so as to seem unaggressive, to please critics of President Obama’s foreign policy among Republicans in Congress.

                                                              Blame them.

You trash Obama but Bush was a crack head. Didn't get himself together til 40 years old. He tore thru Texas and it didn't stop people from voting for him. He seemed like a person they could have a beer with.

Is it just me or do the ditto-heads seem a bit subdued and sad today? I think they are finally realizing they have lost the election and a floundering around trying to find something relevant to say in light of their defeat.

The GOP and their failed policies are going to be rejected by the American people once more. Do you think they'll get the message? NAAAAAAH.

If you are referring to the federal government's response to Katrina, vs, that of its response to Sandy, then there are MAJOR differences that should be pointed out.

First off, Katrina was a category 5 storm. Sandy was downgraded from a category 1 hurricane to a "post tropical depression" by the time it made landfall.

Whereas Katrina caused more than 1800 deaths, Sandy caused less than 60 including all of the states it went through.

Katrina packed a wallop that included sustained winds of 175 MPH, while Sandy's winds topped off at 72 MPH as she swept thru the Tri-State area.

The local townships, and state Governors in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut were prepared and at the ready right from the first inclination that Sandy would hit here in the northeast. People here LISTENED to the warnings, and either prepared themselves, or evacuated like they were told. When Katrina was two days away from New Orleans, most of the people responsible for driving the evacuation vehicles left town, as did a good number of emergency responders (cops, firemen, and ambulance attendants), and a good number of the ones that stayed behind actually participated in looting and rioting right-along with the local residents.

There were VAST differences in the scope and nature of the two storms. Obama has the privilege of hindsight, whereas Bush had NOTHING to compare against the devastation caused by Katrina.

And yesterday's "photo-op" (........and please don't kid yourself into thinking it was anything other than that) did absolutely NOTHING to reduce the suffering, or restore the damage that was caused by this storm. The real work will be done by the Army Corp of Engineers, The Coast Guard, State &N Local Police, local power & electric crews, municipal sanitation workers, contractors, and volunteers. Most of whom, have NOTHING TO DO with Barrack Obama nor his administration.

Interestingly enough, while there was very little coverage of Romney's collecting of food, water and supplies for the victims of Sandy (other than a lot of "smarmy" comments by bottom feeders who hate his wealth & success), Obama's visit to Governor Christie in NJ drew the attention of the national media.

So much for his "not-campaigning" yesterday. It was as much of a photo-op, campaign stop as it was anything else.

I sure wish he would have cared as much about the lives of the four (4) diplomats in Benghazi. But then again, providing them with additional security wouldn't draw much media attention, would it?

The reason Bloomberg did not want Obama to come to NYC was exactly the logistics problem that would ensue with such a security visit. When all transportation systems were still shut down and are just now beginning to return today, why would the president make a visit there even if asked by the mayor? CN governor could also have asked for a visit, but did not because they did not have the mass destruction that NJ had. Yes, there was a major fire in Queens, and millions without power throughout NYC, but the first three days was not the time for a presidential security requirement to get in the way of search and rescue or restoration needs. Bloomberg was in contact with the WH also, and that is why the president issued the Disaster Declaration for both the state of NJ and NYC at the same time. They were both hard hit, with the entire coastline of NJ wiped out.

Let's not hear about 2016 for while - OK?

A single term 7 or 8 year presidency would be nice.

You know, I almost....ALMOST...want to see Obama win the electoral and lose the popular vote.

Know why? Because then both parties would have been screwed out of the Presidency by that arcane, outdated system, and maybe, just maybe, they'd vote to change the Constitution to a popular vote, as it should be.

There has got to be a better way of electing a leader than having both parties pander to a narrow group of interests in less than twenty percent of the states.

                                                                8. The One Man/One Vote Supreme Court ruling shall be enforced by this Amendment, namely that NO federal candidate selection shall be by any means other than the ballot box on Primary/General Election Dates.
                                                                9. National Party Organizations shall NOT raise money for or donate to specific candidates of their party prior to the dates outlined above.

We, the undersigned US citizens, duly registered voters in our respective states/territories, do hereby petition for our state to approve the following amendment to the United States Constitution by the method noted below.

                                                                Term Limits for Congress:
                                                                1. Representatives to Congress shall serve no more than two two-year terms in the House.
                                                                2. Senators shall be elected to no more than two six year terms in the Senate.
                                                                3. No elected official shall serve more than six terms in office in any combined elected offices (House/Senate/Presidency.)

This amendment shall be approved ONLY by State Constitutional Conventions to be called within 90 days of this petition being submmitted to a state’s Secretary of State. #12.2 - Thu Nov 1, 2012 2:39 PM EDT

I don't think the answer is popular vote. All the power would flow to population centers as candidates bribe geographical constituencies with their own money, even more than they do now. I can hear it now. "Free lollipops for all New Yorkers." Thank you no.

                                                                  • 3 votes

Oops, sorry CT, not CN. Got distracted by a phone call while typing that comment.

John, read the other sections carefully. NO candidate can spend more than 60% out of his/her own pocket of what he/she has donated from individuals. Do you really think the EC protects us from the same type of selection? That is the problem with that arcane method. Everything is based on a 10 year census figure, so it takes 20 years before population shifts get corrected in the EC make-up (presidential elections 4 year cycle takes four cycles to combine an election year and census year.)

                                                                    #12.4 - Thu Nov 1, 2012 2:55 PM EDT

                                                                      #12.5 - Thu Nov 1, 2012 3:01 PM EDT

                                                                      Anti-trust proposal,

While I agree on some of what you propose some of it won't work. Good try! We do need some sort of election reform. Constitutional Amendment? Not necessary but probably won't happen without one.

Petition for US Constitutional Amendment For Election Reform

We, the undersigned US citizens, duly registered voters in our respective states/territories, do hereby petition for our state to approve the following amendment to the United States Constitution by the method noted below.

                                                                      Election Reform:

                                                                      1. Abolish the Electoral College (Repeal Amendment 12)

A great idea if you live in California, New York or Texas but a very bad idea if you live in Wyoming, Alaska or Rhode Island. The current system was put in place because the small states were afraid that their power would disappear as the big states would dominate.

                                                                      2. ONE NATIONAL primary date to be held on the Tuesday eight (8) weeks prior to the General Election day for Congressional offices and for the President. Candidate petitions must be filed with the local/state elections boards 60 days prior to the Primary Election date. Federal election petitions shall be uniform in every state and shall include a “contract with the voters” that spells out clearly what that candidate stands for on all issues that they may have to address in elected office. They shall be held accountable in court for breach of that contract if elected and any/all terms are not met.

This seems like a good idea. It seems like election season is at least a year. Most people really don't pay much attention until just before election anyway. I can see where it would save money, time and hassle.

                                                                      3. NO campaigning allowed for any elective federal office more than 60 days prior to the National Primary Date.

                                                                      Absolutely.

                                                                      4. NO campaign contribution shall be donated to any candidate of more than $200 from an individual or $500 maximum from a family (spouses/children living in the same household.) No donations shall be made to a candidate more than sixty days prior to the primary date. No candidate shall contribute from their own funds more than 60% of the total donations from other private individuals.

I fully agree. Too much money is being spent in order to try and buy influence. The current presidential campaign alone has reached nearly a BILLION dollars. That is money that could create jobs and feed the poor.

                                                                      5. NO campaign contribution from any PAC, corporation, union, non-profit organization, special interest group, etc. shall be allowed for any elected federal office.

                                                                      No argument here.

                                                                      6. NO third party campaigning (separate PAC ads, corporate ads, etc.) for/against any candidate shall be allowed at any time during or before the election season.

                                                                      Absolutely agree

                                                                      7. NO party conventions shall be held to select the presidential candidates. The selection must be done at the ballot box in the primary election.

Whether to have a nominating convention should be up to the parties, not just Democrat and Republican but all parties.

                                                                      8. The One Man/One Vote Supreme Court ruling shall be enforced by this Amendment, namely that NO federal candidate selection shall be by any means other than the ballot box on Primary/General Election Dates.

Self evident. Doesn't the Constitution already cover that?

                                                                      9. National Party Organizations shall NOT raise money for or donate to specific candidates of their party prior to the dates outlined above.

                                                                      Agreed.

                                                                      10. PAC’s shall NOT be granted tax-exempt status by the IRS, and any non-profit organization who uses their funding for political purposes shall lose their tax-exempt status.

I totally agree with you on this point. However with the rest of the "amendment" Pacs and Super Pacs woould be useless after all their job is to raise tons of money. If campaigns are limited in what they can accept from donors there would be no need for PACS. If they are somehow allowed than they need to be made transparent as to who is donating to them.

                                                                      11. All lobbyists shall be outlawed from influencing Congress at all times.

I doubt this will be allowed by either Congress or those who the lobbyists represent. Perhaps limiting access and what a lobbyist can offer a politician for a "favor" should be spelled out.

This amendment shall be approved ONLY by State Constitutional Conventions to be called within 90 days of this petition being submmitted to a state’s Secretary of State. A minimum of 25% of the registered voters in each state shall be required to further this petition to the respective Secretary of State.

Is a Contitutiona Amendment warrented? Maybe a Congress who will actually do something and pass laws that would be as you suggest would work better. The trouble is people don't take their reps to task. Most folks don't pay much attention to what is happening in government until just before an election, and even then most are pretty much clueless. Only political juniies like us are really into this stuff.

                                                                      Name Signature State Address

Petition for US Constitutional Amendment For Congressional Term Limits

We, the undersigned US citizens, duly registered voters in our respective states/territories, do hereby petition for our state to approve the following amendment to the United States Constitution by the method noted below.

                                                                      Term Limits for Congress:
                                                                      1. Representatives to Congress shall serve no more than two two-year terms in the House.
                                                                      2. Senators shall be elected to no more than two six year terms in the Senate.
                                                                      3. No elected official shall serve more than six terms in office in any combined elected offices (House/Senate/Presidency.)

Actually we have term limiting things called elections. If you don't like the person in a given office vote for someone else. If enough people vote for that someone else the incumbant is out of office. Not so hard.

Great suggestions but I doubt much change will happen these days unless we have a revolution of ordinary people. That revolution isn't likely to happen as long as peoples' mundane lives are virtually uninterupted and the beat goes on. I applaud your effort and you can see that we agree on most things.

                                                                        #12.6 - Thu Nov 1, 2012 3:39 PM EDT

Experience in politics matters , just being the smartest guy in the room doesn't get it done. Smart becomes dumb when you don't get anything done.

I think the rich like him, I think the Mormons like him but everything I read about him has his friends saying Romney does not let anyone get close. Most say he is a cold business man and good salesmen. You could sit down and have a glass of chocolate milk with him I guess (his favorite drink). He is a control freak, does not like to be questioned, expects people to do what they are told. His circle is Mormons in friends and business. He will have to work with the Tea Bags and they do not like to be told what to do, locked into their ideology pretty tight. His body language lets you know to keep your distance, I can not see him reaching too far across the aisle with this attitude. We in Oregon sure will miss someone promoting our micrbrew and wine industry at the White House. No fun anymore! I wouldn't invite him to a party, I do not vote for anyone I wouldn't invite to a party.

I was fooled the last time because I was blinded by the light from reality. I didn't listen because I "liked" the guy. Granted they all say what they need to say to get elected but Obama has a record now and is running away from it and attacking his opponent. Exactly what he railed against when he ran in 2008. A window into his character that some people seem blind to.

Real thinkers are rarely found in the Democratic party. I guess they are still getting over the fact that they lost the Civil War and all their slaves. It's a party that requires a scary type of enslavement and ideology and anyone who disagrees is not just wrong but evil.

WASHINGTON — The Congressional Research Service has withdrawn an economic report that found no correlation between top tax rates and economic growth after Senate Republicans — including the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell — raised a litany of concerns with the paper’s findings and wording.

Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, center, and other Republicans raised concerns with an economic report that questions a central tenet of conservative economic theory.

The decision, made in late September against the advice of the agency’s economic team leadership, drew almost no notice at the time. Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, cited the study a week and a half after it was withdrawn in a speech on tax policy at the National Press Club.

But it could actually draw new attention to the report, which questions a central tenet of conservative economic theory: that lowering the top marginal tax rate spurs economic growth and job creation.

“This has hues of a banana republic,” Mr. Schumer said. “They didn’t like a report, and instead of rebutting it, they had them take it down.”

Republicans did not say whether they had asked the research service, a nonpartisan arm of the Library of Congress, to take the report out of circulation, but they were clear that they protested its tone and findings.

Don Stewart, a spokesman for Mr. McConnell, said the Kentucky Republican and other senators “raised concerns about the methodology and other flaws.” Mr. Stewart added that people outside of Congress had also criticized the study and that officials at the research service “decided, on their own, to pull the study pending further review.”

Senate Republican aides said they protested both the tone of the report and its findings. Aides to Mr. McConnell presented a bill of particulars to the research service that included objections to the use of the term “Bush tax cuts” and the report’s reference to “tax cuts for the rich,” which Republicans contended was politically freighted.

They also protested on economic grounds, saying that the author, Thomas L. Hungerford, was looking for a macroeconomic response to tax cuts within the first year of the policy change without taking into sufficient account the time lag of economic policies. Further, they complained that his analysis did not take into account other policies affecting growth, such as the Federal Reserve’s decisions on interest rates.

“There were a lot of problems with the report from a real, legitimate economic analysis perspective,” said Antonia Ferrier, a spokeswoman for the Senate Finance Committee’s Republicans. “We relayed them to C.R.S. It was a good discussion. We have a good, constructive relationship with them. Then it was pulled.”

The pressure applied to the research service comes amid a broader Republican effort to raise questions about research and statistics that were once trusted as nonpartisan and apolitical.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday will release unemployment figures for October, a month after some conservatives denounced its last report as politically tinged to abet President Obama’s re-election. When the bureau suggested its October report might be delayed by Hurricane Sandy, some conservatives immediately suggested politics were at play.

Republicans have also tried to discredit the private Tax Policy Center ever since the research organization declared that Mitt Romney’s proposal to cut tax rates by 20 percent while protecting the middle class and not increasing the deficit was mathematically impossible. For years, conservatives have pressed the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office to factor in robust economic growth when it is asked to calculate that cost of tax cuts to the federal budget.

Congressional aides and outside economists said they were not aware of prior efforts to discredit a study from the research service.

“When their math doesn’t add up, Republicans claim that their vague version of economic growth will somehow magically make up the difference. And when that is refuted, they’re left with nothing more to lean on than charges of bias against nonpartisan experts,” fumed Representative Sander Levin of Michigan, the ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee.

Jared Bernstein, a former economist for Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., conceded that “tax cuts for the rich” was “not exactly academic prose,” but he said the analysis did examine policy time lags and controlled for several outside factors, including monetary policy.

“This sounds to me like a complete political hit job and another example of people who don’t like the results and try to use backdoor ways to suppress them,” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like this, and frankly, it makes me worried.”

Janine D’Addario, a spokeswoman for the Congressional Research Service, would not comment on internal deliberations over the decision. She confirmed that the report was no longer in official circulation.

A source familiar with the deliberations, who requested anonymity because the discussions were not public, said the Sept. 28 decision to pull back the report was made over the advice of the research service’s economics division, and that Mr. Hungerford stood by its findings.

The report received wide notice from media outlets and liberals and conservative policy analysts when it was released on Sept. 14. It examined the historical fluctuations of the top income tax rates and the rates on capital gains since World War II, and concluded those fluctuations did not appear to affect the nation’s economic growth.

“The reduction in the top tax rates appears to be uncorrelated with saving, investment, and productivity growth. The top tax rates appear to have little or no relation to the size of the economic pie,” the report said. “However, the top tax rate reductions appear to be associated with the increasing concentration of income at the top of the income distribution.”

The Congressional Research Service does such reports at the request of lawmakers, and the research is considered private. Although the reports are posted on the service’s Web site, they are available only to members and staff. Their public release is subject to lawmakers’ discretion.

But the Hungerford study was bound to be widely circulated. It emerged in the final months of a presidential campaign in which tax policy has been a central focus. Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee, strongly maintains that any increase in the top tax rates on income and capital gains would slow economic growth and crush the job market’s tentative recovery.

President Obama has promised to allow cuts on the top two income tax rates to expire in January, lifting the rates from 33 percent and 35 percent, their level during most of George W. Bush’s presidency, to 36 percent and 39.6 percent, where they were during most of the Clinton administration. Mr. Obama maintains the increases would not hurt the economy and are the fairest way to reduce the deficit.

Mr. Hungerford, a specialist in public finance who earned his economic doctorate from the University of Michigan, has contributed at least $5,000 this election cycle to a combination of Mr. Obama’s campaign, the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

                                                                                  Blame them.

                                                                                  Hey ItsBenghazi,

It seems to me that conservatives in this country have a short term and flawed memory. As I recall on March 23, 2011 President Obama's leadership skills put together a NATO Alliance to take over the no-fly zone over Libya in the time frame that the President talked about in the previous week.

Question: What role did Mr. Obama's Cairo speech have in the spread of the democratic aspirations of the Arab and Northern African peoples now known as the Arab Spring?

It appears that the President is not merely adequate, but prophetical and superior to many past presidents.

President Obama and Madame Secretary Clinton developed an outstanding diplomatic effort that formed a coalition and consensus in the U.N. and NATO that stopped a slaughter of thousands of innocent civilian Libyans and that brough the tyrant, murder of Americans (see Pan Am flight 103) and a long time supporter of terrorist, Gaddafi, to his knees.

That sir is true Leadership. The actions of a few dead enders in Benghazi pales in comparison and God rest their souls when President Obama finds out who and where they are.

                                                                                  • 4 votes

President Barack Hussein Obama only needs a mirror to find the "dead ender" responsible for Benghazi. There is responsibility that goes with being Commander in Chief and it goes way beyond just "cherry picking" events that poll well.

There is an ambassador and 3 other Americans that were killed on US soil on his watch. The responsibility goes with the job. Yet the coward hid behind a woman's skirt who has a hell of a lot more honor and integrity than President Barack Hussein Obama will ever have!

They're kicking, and screaming because they know their bs won't win this election. As their D-Day gets closer, they will be louder, which will drive more voters to the right. A glorious win... and our country will be saved, but it was a close call.

She's an unhappy skank of a woman. If she had a brain, she wouldn't know how to use it. Hopefully, there are no ambassadors in her family for Obama to let die. Even for a slug like her, that would be sad. Not that it would bother her. She'd find a way to say it was right, because Obama did it.

He had FULL CONTROL of both Houses in Jan '09, there was NOTHING that could stop him from passing any piece of legislation he desired..... so why did he wait?

Feb '09 - pass immigration reform

Mar '09 - pass tax reform

Apr '09 - pass marriage reform

May '09 - pass ObamaCare (without excluding the unions, Congress & all the other bribes)

                                                                                  Jun '09 - anything else?

So why did he wait? What kept him from doing what he said he would do? And why does he deserve four more years to do what he did not take care of in the first place?

This also might shed some light on how the Republican Party works.

Have you actually read the crap the Dems are trying to push through? Worse, they keep trying to invoke cloture to stop debate and pass it all without discussion. Spending increases, debt ceiling changes, repealing of laws against oversight operations that are conflicts of interest, elimination of environmental and worker safety legislation...all of this and more is hidden in this crap that they are trying to pass off as legislation. Filibusters and nays have saved American's butts more than once this last four years of trying to slip in crap disguised as jobs legislation. You should thank them rather than castigate them for blocking this crap.

As it is, we are about to hit the debt ceiling before the end of the year. Prepare for another downgrade, folks, because at the rate we are going it is coming. Voting for Obama is voting for more spending and an economy like that of Greece in the future. Surely it cannot be true what the leaders among the Democrats really believe about the American people (that the public is too stupid to govern themselves: the same position as that held by their Tory forebears). Or, is it?

                                                                                    @ dcpyle,

And your choice is better for America? I suggest you come back in 4 years when you have a better choice. Moving for one extreme to the other extreme is not a good or wise choice. Right now the economy is growing and just as the auto industry is moving forward it's not the time to move backwards! Live with it for another 4 years and when things are better we will see what you have to offer. Right now all you're offering is lies and my 4 year old even asks me why Romney is lying. Even she pays attention.

                                                                                      #25.6 - Fri Nov 2, 2012 1:15 AM EDT

He is not my candidate of choice but Obama and clan spell the ruination of America. The auto industry is not moving as far forward as anyone had hoped. And, as payback for the help that Chrysler got, its foreign parent company (Fiat, Italy) decided to manufacture Jeeps in China. That is a fact. While it is true that it isn't necessarily planning to move factories overseas from the US at present, they are going to open more in China rather than create new jobs in America.

But, hey, thanks to Obama and clan Chrysler and Jeep are foreign-owned instead of American owned like they used to be before Obama got done. I suppose that since they now are owned by a foreign company they have a right to create jobs in places other than America. By the way, since when did selling American companies to a foreign company/owner become "moving forward" in America? I think you have your priorities mixed up just a tad more than you know.

And, four-year-olds have a tendency to repeat what their parents say around them. That isn't saying much.
