Also to be there himself on scene if need be gives the people hope, and assurance they will be helped in a time of need.

The first question I would have is, "Why was Ambassador Stevens there in the first place with an insufficient security detail". His protection was in Tripoli and he choose not to take it with him. There are a lot of little details to this that do not pass the smell test. Depending on what was going on, we may never know the truth behind the whole affair. Why did Congressman Issa have to cancel his hearings after it was pointed out that he was displaying classified information on C-Span. Why has Mitt suddenly gone silent on the subject. Why is Fox News the only news organization continuing this story without any facts. The only fact we have is that Mitt Romney stated in his 47% speech that he would take advantage of a hostage like situation if one came up. He jumped the gun with criticism of this and seems to have learned his lesson. In times of tragedy, we need to stick together rather than attacking the President for political gains.

Heck, even the President of Libya had to come out and tell Obama and his minions that they are loony and there were no protests, no video, just a planned attack.

I will grant that this is consistent of what we've seen from Obama. He jumped to the conclusion that a white cop was "clearly wrong," only to be proved otherwise. Regardless of one's political affiliation, it doesn't take any brains to reach the conclusion that an attack in a Muslim country on our embassy on the anniversary of 9/11 is not a spontaneous demonstration as a result of a two-bit video.

I don't know what Panetta thought we should know before doing anything. The compound was loaded with cameras. They were advised what was going on. If you can't defend an Ambassador under such circumstances or act because you don't know exactly what is going on then what good is having a military. You never know exactly what is going on. The list goes on.

I suppose all that is irrelevant because it was the video, after all.

Doing that actually makes sense. The states already are responsible for the first 48 hours. FEMA is really intended to bring in further support at that point. Mostly FEMA masses the supplies in the next state or in the state in the first place. The states are responsible for DECLARING a state of emergency and REQUESTING federal aid from FEMA. 48hours thing in nonsense! Typically a natural disaster occurs suddenly without warning (tornadoes, earthquake, etc.)and therefore the Governor of said state is responsible for coordinating the initial response and, if necessary, activating the national guard. Relying on state's abilities to work together is simplistic and naive. Foisting the responsibilities of FEMA onto states would bankrupt disaster prone states quicker than the Bush tax cuts and cause jurisdictional problems.
Find something better to defend Romney on... this battle is lost. How about Romney's BS ads about the auto industry? Romney's incomplete tax releases? His mathematics-defying tax plan? How about his ever changing stance on abortion and contraception?

1. The Middle East is a significant chunk of geography. Without having a significant military presence in most of the countries, it's physically impossible to respond with the appropriate force within 7 hours. Certainly we could have bombed the Consulate but I don't think that would have accomplished the goal. Unless your goal is to just kill Muslims.

Add to that the fact that additional security was requested and denied.

I think that has been previously addressed by the Republicans in Congress by voting down the funds to reinforce security.

Add to that the fact that the marines in Egypt were not allowed to have live ammo.

Regardless of one's political affiliation, it doesn't take any brains to reach the conclusion that an attack in a Muslim country on our embassy on the anniversary of 9/11 is not a spontaneous demonstration as a result of a two-bit video.

There are 1.2 billion Muslims in the world. Muslims are the majority in 49 countries. Please explain in detail how you would safeguard all consulates and embassies from a terrorist attack worldwide.

I don't know what Panetta thought we should know before doing anything. The compound was loaded with cameras. They were advised what was going on. If you can't defend an Ambassador under such circumstances or act because you don't know exactly what is going on then what good is having a military. You never know exactly what is going on. The list goes on.

It wasn't an Embassy...it was a Consulate. There are no Marines at a Consulate because there are no secret documents. You see, the Marines are there to safeguard documents not people. If they can't safeguard the documents they destroy them. To safeguard our embassies world wide...how many troops would you like to permanently station; a Company, a Battalion, a Brigade...how about a Division? Who's going to pay for that?
