Campaigns take a break for a night of laughs

President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney let off steam, laughing at each other and the tribulations of the campaign trail at a Catholic charity dinner in New York City. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney took a break from their often rancorous campaigns to poke fun at each other and themselves at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner in New York, Thursday night.

Romney told the formal white tie and gown crowd that, "it's nice to finally relax and wear what Ann and I wear around the house."

Through much of the evening, the two candidates sat just one chair down from each other. Only host Cardinal Timothy Dolan separated them, the Associated Press reported.

Romney told the crowd, "I was actually hoping the president would bring Joe Biden along this evening, because he'll laugh at anything."

In discussing how he prepares for the debates, Romney said his strategy was to "find the biggest available straw man and mercilessly attack it; Big Bird didn't even see it coming."

Romney playfully jabbed at Obama, saying both candidates rely on crucial people. As Romney put it, "I have my beautiful wife, Ann; he's got Bill Clinton."

After his introduction, Obama asked the crowd to "please take your seats, otherwise Clint Eastwood will yell at them."

Obama talked about his performance in Tuesday night's debate, saying he "felt really well rested after the nice long nap I had in the first debate."

He added, "I particularly want to apologize to (MSNBC's) Chris Matthews. Four years ago I gave him a thrill up his leg; this time around I gave him a stroke."

Poking fun at his opponent, Obama talked about being attacked after his overseas trip in 2008 for being "a celebrity because I was so popular with our allies overseas. And I have to say I'm impressed with how Governor Romney has avoided that problem."

The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is an annual fundraiser for the charity named after the former governor of New York. The dinner has become a regular stop for presidential candidates dating back to 1960, according to the foundation's Web page.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

From tramping through cornfields to munching ice cream cones to holding babies – the time-honored traditions of the campaign trail leave President Barack Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney looking surprisingly alike.

"I will say Mitt Romney has practiced for longer than any presidential candidate in history for tonight. We expect him to be drop-on-the-floor funny," spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters aboard Air Force One, being sarcastic.

Why didn't Mitt Romney serve in Viet Nam when he demonstrated FOR the Viet Nam war? Why did he hide in Paris and play on the French Riviera attended to by his personal chef and driven around France by his personal chauffeur while the sons of working class families fought and died in his place?

Why is it that even though the Romney family is pro both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, none of his 5 sons have ever served in the military?

Why isn't America good enough for Mitt Romney's money? Why does he have it overseas, in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland and many other places?

Why doesn't he want you to see his tax forms?

Is it good enough for him to tell you that you can't see his tax forms but you can trust him to tell you the truth about what's in them? Are you really that gullible?

Why is it that he claims to get tough on China and save American jobs when at this very moment, his company is shipping a manufacturing plant to China that provided jobs to Americans? The name of the company is Sensata and the address of Sensata is 2520 Walnut St, Freeport, Illinois.

Before Bain Capital moved on it, Sensata was a healthy company that employed nearly 200 hard working tax paying Americans.

Now their jobs are gone, their pensions are gone. Bain even made them train the Chinese workers to do their jobs before Bain fired them.

Mitt Romney lied when he denied that he gets a tax break for moving Sensata overseas. Look it up.

He also grossly missled when he implied that his involvement in China and Obama's involvement in China were on par.

They aren't. Romney's investment in Sensata is 8 million dollars. Obama's investment in Sensata (through his Senatorial retirement fund that he can't even collect for 11 years) is ELEVEN DOLLARS.

Why are Republicans willing to vote for someone who lies so effortlessly and repeatedly?

Why are Republicans willing to vote for someone who has hurt America and will continue doing so?

I tried to watch both with an open mind . . . . but it seemed to me that, for the most part, Obama looked relaxed & comfortable, while Romney continued to look stiff/odd/awkward & uncomfortable. O mostly poked fun at himself . . . and Romney's also mostly poked fun at O, and his 'jokes' had (IMO) a mean/nasty edge to them that O's didn't. The closest O got was telling everyone to take their seats before Clint Eastwood could start yelling at the empty chairs.

IMO, whoever holds the office of President is deserving of respect, and I have been dismayed at the lack of it lately. I despised Bush, but I still thought he deserved respect because of the office he occupied.

R has treated O like an underling he wants to fire, or a fly he wants to swat but can't (at least while anyone's watching).

Might add another -- how can we think about voting for a man who will wear magic underpants in the Oval Office and believes that after he dies, he'll be whisked off to a planet to live happily ever after?

I still think the president scolded Romney badly during the second debate for politicizing the Benghazi attack. A bully will flinch when you stand up to him. Everything Owen says in his comment is true. Look it up. What's more, the Sensata is not being moved to China because it's losing money, it's not. It's being moved so they can pay the Chinese a mere fraction of what they're paying the Americans workers. So it's screw hundreds of American workers and their families.

Hey, it's called free enterprise. It's how Bain capital has made itself incredibly rich, while all the time putting American workers out on the street. Especially during the time Romney was running it.

My impression is that Romney thought he was their to do a Roast of Obama. If you look at older clips, the tradition of this dinner is for politicians to poke fun at themselves, mostly, not to hurl stones at their opponent.

I thought Obama did a better job at that, and was funnier. Mitt looked like he was still a little angry from the drubbing he got at the last debate - IMO, there was just a kind of petty & nasty edge to his remarks that seemed to me to be more mean than funny.

I like a guy who can poke fun at himself, and Obama was very comfortable doing that.

Obama seemed like he was enjoying a break from campaigning; Mitt was still on the stump.

No, SteelMan, he didn't lie (that's a lie!)

You see, after intelligence (look it up!) is collected, educated people think! and then, sometimes they have a different perspective and even - brace yourself - change their minds!

so, what our president did was tell the truth, which has been fact-checked multiple times - and then, later, he told MORE truth.

And finally, Ambassador Stevens' family has asked politicians to stop using this tragedy to score cheap political shots . . . In the words of your favorite - but infamous - Queen Annie, just "Stop It!"

Its all fun and games to ignore the crossroads we are at and to pretend that our problems don't exist. Let's hope tomorrow people will get serious again. We need an equable plan to divide the the United States into two separate countries. Only fools would think at this point that there is ever a chance of going back to unity in our country. Lets face it, this isn't politics any longer, we are country that has got to a point where neighbor truly genuinely hates neighbor.

We need someone in office who will take a serious look at the logistics of how this can be worked out. This probably should have been done before the civil war. We need to grow up and stop pretending the need to geographically and governmentally split this country doesn't exist.

I use to have total Respect for the true evangelical Christian, Billy Graham and his Church

for accurately listing MORMONISM as a CULT.

But it seems a quick phone call from Mitt Romney and the Billy Graham organization has taken

MORMONISM as a CULT off their website.

Like Mitt Romney, it looks like you Christian Evagelicals are just your average bottom-feeding, low-life, Hypocrites,

with no sense of morals.

If you so-called Christians weren't so full of your lack of character, moral shortcomings and character defects, you would realize that Mitt Romney is a just a "flim-flam man", a Snake-oil Hustler, and just a common "slick as oil" Amway-type Con artist.

Owen, Debrorah...

Owen said.. Why didn't Mitt Romney serve in Viet Nam when he demonstrated FOR the Viet Nam war? Why did he hide in Paris and play on the French Riviera attended to by his personal chef and driven around France by his personal chauffeur while the sons of working class families fought and died in his place?

Response... Many Americans chose to go to college during the Vietnam War. Even people who supported Democratic Presidents Kennedy and Johnson who sent our troops.

Owen Said... Why is it that even though the Romney family is pro both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, none of his 5 sons have ever served in the military?

response... Just because one supports an effort does not constitute they are fit to serve. How many years of military service did Obama have? What about Clinton? Carter? Wait.. how many years total did the last 3 Democratic Presidents have, combined???

If you are going to judge, one must be fair.

Owen said... Why isn't America good enough for Mitt Romney's money? Why does he have it overseas, in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland and many other places?

Response... Please provide reference to proof of his over seas accounts, and not "assumptions" by biased individuals, trying to confuse you with non-proven, non-factual information.

Owen said... Why doesn't he want you to see his tax forms?

response... You really should pay attention better... He released his taxes, and he paid more in taxes last year, than you will ever earn in your life. That's not accounting for his charitable donations, most probably organizations your friends and family have depended on.

Owen said... Is it good enough for him to tell you that you can't see his tax forms but you can trust him to tell you the truth about what's in them? Are you really that gullible?

Response... This would be called an opinion, but why not, you would believe a fake birth certificate. Oh wait, the IRS actually was able to example and validate the authenticity.

Owen said... Why is it that he claims to get tough on China and save American jobs when at this very moment, his company is shipping a manufacturing plant to China that provided jobs to Americans? The name of the company is Sensata and the address of Sensata is 2520 Walnut St, Freeport, Illinois.

Response... You do understand that he stepped down from Day to day operations in 1999? Oh wait.. that would mean he has NOTHING to do with Sensata? Nice try, though.

Owen said... He also grossly missled when he implied that his involvement in China and Obama's involvement in China were on par.

response... Reference, please. How do they differ, exactly and factually?

Owen said... Why are Republicans willing to vote for someone who lies so effortlessly and repeatedly?

Why are Republicans willing to vote for someone who has hurt America and will continue doing so?

Response... Same reason why Democrats will do the same... Newsflash, both sides have been caught fabricating the truth and twisting words.

Sorry, but you don't get to make stuff up. What ever Bain Capital is/isn't doing, Mitt Romney is not running that company, and since he is not the acting CEO, he doesn't get a say in the matter.

The question is begging to be asked though, why is the original company owners getting a pass on selling? Especially to a company with a reputation, such as Bain Capital?

Why hasn't Obama ever served in the military? Why hasn't he ever had a genuine job? Why isn't he honest with the American citizens that he took an oath to serve and admit that he is a communist like his REAL father?

I'm glad Gov. Romney has a chance to relax before he goes into the next debate Monday night and slam dunks Obama.

Obama is already planning to move to his estate in Hawaii in Jan.2013 that he is paying 35 million dollars of the taxpayers money for. He has had four years of rerouting funds into his own bank accounts to prepare for their continued life of luxury after he has put us and our country in another depression. He should be put on trial for treason and live out the rest of his miserable life in a military prison.

Most of the time the 2 Presidential Candidates are near fisticuffs during debates, on the Campaign Trail degrading each other, then a Fundraiser brings them together as if they have been friends forever!

They both have a way about them that is engaging. Sure the Nominees had their speeches written for them, but thought it was an excellent, fun exchange of digs at each other and about themselves..

It is good to have 1 hour of light hearted laughter from them---because of this Event.

It is a relief of tension building for the last year, making all stressed out. It has been the nastier Campaign in our lifetime.

Good post Larry. But you might as well stand and talk to a tree because you'll at least be talking to something smarter that Owen. These O-sheeple will never listen to reason or facts. This whole Dem tactic for the election of slander and lie is all they have left.- Polls are showing Romney leading, the UofC report shows Romney winning by a landslide (never been wrong- picked every Pres since 1980) They are grasping and won't stop till Nov 6th (probably won't stop griping even then). But good job on the responses. Me. I wouldn't bother spending the time responding to the jerk-off.

Can anyone tell me, how Mr.Obama can afford a 40 million estate in Hawaii, that he just bought recently. As a public servant, where did that kind of money come from. Is it inheritance, did he invest well, did he earn it before public office, really I was just wondering where that huge amount of money came from. If you know please enlighten me.

Refreshing to see that politics do not require opposites to hate one another. I hope this lightens the mood and senseless hate and bashing that we've all seen too much of on both sides.

I've never supported Obama, but he is my president and I respect him and disagree without wishing any ill on him. It's not hard to do and feels a lot better than wishing to hurt someone with whom you disagree. Why wouldn't this be a better approach?

You don't have to explain yourself to me. I beleive you and you are doing the right thing. My conscience would never let me be if I voted for someone who has outsourced Amercia and gotten rich off the backs of the working poor and middle class. It is becasue of people like Mitt romney and Paul Ryan that this country is in the shape it is in. They don't care how much people suffer and that is easy to see from the rhetoric they spew out of their mouth. Do not expect anything good or kind to come from these Republicans mouth because they know nothing but hate for anyone who is not like them. They are all blind to any facts or the truth. They only see one view and that is the view of the Republican party even if it is not right for the country. At least you could see and that was a good thing.

Even in Freeport, Illinois - plus he is guaranteed an annual income of between $20 or $30 Million a year

To Larry Stauth Jr;

I would suggest that you keep your pie hole shut and not publicly make a fool of your self.

James Earle (Jimmy) Carter, Jr., who in 1976 became the fifth consecutive
President with prior Navy service, was born in Plains, Georgia on 1 October
1924, to Lillian Gordy and James Earle Carter. Carter grew up in a rural
atmosphere and attended public schools. Graduating from Plains High School in
1941, he attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. After a
year there, Carter transferred to Georgia Institute of Technology to study
mathematics for a year in order to qualify for the U.S. Naval Academy. In 1943,
Carter received an appointment to the academy and became a member of the Class
of 1947. After completing the accelerated wartime program, he graduated on 5
June 1946 with distinction and obtained his commission as ensign.

After
he graduated, Carter was stationed at Norfolk and assigned to USS Wyoming
(E-AG 17), an older battleship that had been converted into a floating
laboratory for testing new electronics and gunnery equipment. On Wyoming,
Carter served as radar officer and CIC officer. Detached when Wyoming was
decommissioned on 23 July 1947, he was assigned that day to another similarly
used battleship, USS Mississippi (E-AG 128) as Training and Education
Officer. After completing two years of surface ship duty, Carter chose to apply
for submarine duty. Accepted, he began the six-month course at the U.S. Navy
Submarine School, Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut from 14 June to 17
December 1948.

Upon completion of the course, Carter was assigned to USS
Pomfret (SS 391) based at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he reported on board
on 29 December. Pomfret left on a simulated war patrol to the western
Pacific and the Chinese coast on 4 January 1949. On board, Carter qualified in a
submarine on 4 February, and served as Communications Officer, Sonar Officer,
Electronics Officer, Gunnery Officer and Supply Officer. On 9 March, he served
as the approach officer for a simulated torpedo firing at target ships, and
scored a "hit." The submarine returned to Pearl Harbor on 25 March. Soon after
Carter's promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade on 5 June 1949, Pomfret was
sent in July to San Diego where the submarine operated along the California
coast.

Not knowing that President Carter was a Naval Officer shines a light on your ignorance and invalidates any comments you have or in the immediate future, will make.

The only thing he found funny about himself was that he didn't drink, which he reminded the crowd several times. Knee slapper. Other than that, it was really just cover for a bunch of nasty campaign-driven attacks, most of it funny only to his base.

Just my two cents.

I can't believe that this election is this close. The most it should be is 80 - 20. If you notice everything Romney says is focused through the filter of a job, money or employment and how rich people need to be coddled. I have never seen a human with such a warped, deranged, singular world view. When asked what he will do for women he replies that all women need is to work in one of his sweat shops for bare-subsistence wages,...and everything will be alright. How about providing child care stipends to assist single Moms trying to make it? How about funding Planned Parenthood? God! Has this poor creature no other means of expression but his worship of money, commerce and wealth? What does he say during love making? "Ooooooh baby, let's improve our net shareholders equity!!"

And half of America wants to elect this sociopathic kook? If it happens I am swimming for Canada at dawn the following day.

I am grateful for the few hours of relative calm before the storm. The next 3 weeks are going to be hectic for both of them and full of dirty politics and unsubstantiated claims.

To give credit where its due, President Obama has had some success in polarizing the nation, significantly increasing debt, damaging our reputation world wide, stalling the economy and increasing the number of dependents relying on government assistance. These are just a few examples of his “achievements” over the last 4 years. He tried his best to “level the playing field” and by stealth deliver his brand of social change to our shores. Socialism is the best way to describe it.

It, socialism that is, has not worked in Eastern Europe, it’s killing Western Europe right now and has turned the few nations that continue to persist with it into poverty stricken enclaves. Why in the world did our President think that it would work for him/us?

Romney 2012, show us how it should be done.

Jonny,

just how smart is the average democrat? Liberals keep calling Romney and republicans stupid, but how smart do you have to be to borrow a trillion dollars from China and give it to welfare recipients? Even I, a stupid republican, can figure out how to do that, the only thing I cant figure out is how much it will cost to pay it back if you dont have the money, so you borrow another trillion and a half, to pay back the first trillion. Obama and you are really smart.

Man of Steel,

GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT.

Ambassador Stevens' mother DID NOT say anything derogatory about the President or the circumstances surrounding her son's death. Here is what she DID say:

"I don't think it's productive to lay blame on people."

She also said she "doesn't want to talk about the circumstances surrounding her son's death." And Ambassador Stevens' father has asked Mitt Romney to stop politicizing his son's death, but Mr. Romney continues to do so.

Apparently, Mr. Romney has no respect for our dead patriots or their families, and neither do you or all those other folks on the Vine who checked your post without researching the facts first. That's one thing that drives me crazy about forums like this ... people read something that sounds good to them and then hop on board before even checking it out first.

I'll be voting for some democrats, some republicans and there is still an independent I am seriously looking at. Like Obama said last night on the Daily Show on Comedy Central, the killing of four Americans in Libya last month was "not optimal." You would have to assume that by "not optimal" Obama was referring to how it has interfered with his campaign. Or maybe by "not optimal" Obama was referring to how hard it has been to come up with a consistent story. One thing for sure, describing the death of four Americans in a terrorist attack as "not optimal" is a pretty cold statement by Obama. Just who does Obama think the job of being president is all about? Obama, or the nation?

I find your post laughable, and to be nothing more than desperate political tatics to continue the forget the Obama failures, focus on making Romney to be a evil, bad man agenda. Polls indicate that the Obama campaign is steadily bleeding. That's what happens when you spend all of your time trying to make your competition look bad, instead of trying to plead your case on what you are going to do to keep your position.

There's a reason MSNBC is the least trusted news network. It's overrun by liberal thinking. It hasn't been objective in many, many years. They cover for any liberal democratic politician, and try their best to destroy the opposition. This news agency is dead, it's only value is purely entertainment.

Well, Perfect Eric, let's just take a look at history.

I remember when John F. Kennedy was assassinated if that's a clue as to how young I am.

I remember after the Nixon/Watergate and Gerald Ford fiasco, how Jimmy Carter told the American people we would have to cut back and make some sacrifices in order to pay down the deficit over a period of years. More than half the country said, "Hell NO," and stampeded to the polls to vote for Ronald Reagan the Great Communicator who communicated "trickle-down voodoo economics" and brought on the greatest debt the country had ever incurred at that time before he retired to his California ranch with his astrology-loving wife, Nancy. Afterwards, Reagan said the tremendous deficit he thrust on our nation "was the biggest disappointment of his presidency."

I remember how the masses loved it when G.H.W. Bush (George's father) told them what they wanted
to hear … "READ MY LIPS - NO NEW TAXES!"

Then two years later Bush raised taxes.

Then Bill Clinton came along and straightened out the economic mess after eight years and our country
finally had a surplus again.

Then, not caring for Al Gore and wanting a more conservative Supreme Court, I voted for George Bush -
twice. He put two wars on a credit card and flushed our economy down the toilet in the worst recession since the Great Depression. Then he and Cheney took their golden parachute rides to their luxury ranches in Texas and Wyoming.

Let's see ... and I remember how in less than four years, President Obama has tried to bring the
economic slide to a stop and get it turned around and headed in the right direction, just as he promised to do. Got us out of Iraq, too.

So, take your pompous posts about Romney, stop listening to FOX news while you eat your microwave
popcorn, and start doing a little reading in the history books.

You'll find out that your beloved GOP candidate worships a man named Joseph Smith who, because he
could not find Captain's Kidd buried gold treasure, decided to create a fantasy about finding some golden plates an angel named Moroni gave him.

And since you like fresh ideas, how about this one -- 99% of the Tea Party members are part of the 47% of freeloaders that Mitt Romney disdains.

Lets look at a bigger picture DEMs forced Bush Sr. to raise taxes and caused a recession that ended his term.

Bill just like Obama came at the tail end of the recession on the upswing but the economy and balanced budgets happened when the 1996 REP congress passed welfare reform and balanced the budget. The country was shut down twice and Clinton Vetoed twice the bill that would define his presidency for low debts. Also there was no surplus the last year the debt went up 144 billion. Still low but not a surplus.

As far as the Two wars the Debt until the recession caused by the housing meltdown was below 400 billion for 6 years straight.

As far as the great recession the DEMs helped to cause this problem. How you might ask

1. Passing the 1992 act

2. from 2002-2006 killing the regulation called upon by REP to better control the GSEs

3. Tying Federal monies to housing loan requirements forcing the banks to make poor loans

Obama hasn't even picked up the phone to talk with Boehner about the fiscal cliff coming to a January near you. Obama has issued a veto threat, which is apparently how Obama feels compromise works in Washington. The fact is Obama wants all the Bush tax cuts to expire and the across the board spending cuts since he feels he cannot be blamed. Obama will blame Republicans even though the Harry Reid led Senate has done nothing for years. Obama wants to raise taxes on everyone, it is the only way to have the revenue to cover his lavish spending habits and redistribution. But Obama doesn't want the blame, even though the Democratic Party has been orchestrating this situation with the help of the media. So happy new year if Obama is re-elected. A big tax increase thanks to Obama, even if the blame game continues everyone but liberals will know the truth.

A guy whose idea of hardship is having to eat tuna and pasta?

Gee, Randy...you must be like Romney then. Born on third base and thinks he hit a home run.

I love how some people on the left selectively trot out the value of millitary service only when it suits their agenda. It seems to be a pretty null issue in this particular election since neither candidate or vice president for that matter has any millitary experience.

Yet last election when Obama ran against a man who not only served in our millitary but was captured and tortured as a prisoner of war and as a result spent the majority of his entire life with limited use of his arms, but STILL continued to serve the people of the country he was tortured in the name of, and through hard work made his way to the top and sought the highest office of the land; the left just deemed him an old out of touch white guy.

Wow, even when talking about this dinner, most people are brainwashed party Brahmin. Romney is this, that, or something else, Obama is kind, just good. PUH-LEEEEZE!!!! How much drug therapy and Indoctrination does it take to completely remove your ability to think independently?

Let me break this to you as gently as I can. Politicians, regardless of party are thieves, con men, scoundrels and liars. It's all part of the job. They have two things thing have in common, their lust for money and power and If they're mouth is moving, they are LYING to you.

Please explain how it is, that on a tax payer provided salary of $460,000 this president posted an adjusted federal personal income ( after all the breaks, deductions, exemptions, credits, etc.) of $1.7 million in 2011. This does not include benefits or health care which is free to him, WE pay all of it along with his salary. So, in fact Obama's personal income was much higher before all the breaks he took to "adjust" his income. Think you could post number that much above your W-3 without the IRS kicking in the door? I think not.

Romney posted $20 million and paid 14% or $2.288 million in taxes on this income. Neither reveals all sources of their income. Again meaning, his real income was much higher.

As to the question of Romney's kids not serving in the military, that's easy clown boy, since 1975 our military has been all volunteer, just as it is for yours. They can join or not. They ended the draft because whining sissies thought it too great an imposition to require military service as all other countries you sight as being more civilized do. Even Switzerland requires military training and regular military exorcises for all citizens 18-50. What about King William of Clinton spending his time in Canada and England instead of serving in Vietnam, Clown? Hmmm, What about that?

The point is, they are all dirty, ALL the time. The current and hopeful are no different. If you form an acronym from the four affiliations, dems, independents, Repubs and,,,,,, tea party,,, you get D.I.R.T. Do you people honestly think the is happenstance? NOTHING to do with politicians is happenstance, the division of the country with party rhetoric is by design. If they keep the people arguing among themselves, few have the presence of mind to watch THEM. And these people bear watching closely. I know it's tough with all the indoctrination by THINK!!!! I stopped drinking form the party cooler years ago. I just wish others would too. Before we are sold to the highest bidder by your political saints in designer suits.

Nicodemus. I am no fan of Obama's but your post reeks of conspiracy.

Obama makes considerable income each year of his book sales, which you make no mention or consideration of. Amazing when you are put into one of if not the single more recognized public position in the world, and you have written several books, a few people go out and buy them.

What possible jusfication do you have to say Romney made "much more" income? He pays a smaller percentage of tax because he makes the vast majority (all as far as I know of) of his income off of returns from his investments, which are taxed differently from earned income tax (which he already would have paid on the money he used to make the investments anyway), and those returns are already taxed at a 35% corporate level before he pays the additonal capital gains taxes. Again, so I don't see anywhere in that which indicates he made a "real income" that was "much higher."

Romney directed 8 jokes towards the President.

President Obama directed 3 jokes towards Romney.

President Obama directed more jokes at himself and laughed at himself. Romney could not do the same without chitting his pants. It would infuriate Romney for people to laugh at him, why? Because Romney has no sense of humor, he only finds things that are demeaning to others to be funny. Think back to his school days and ridiculing the kid with the long hair, then taking a pair of scissors, holding him down, and cutting his hair. Romney is a mean, hateful, contemptuous person. Those types of people cannot laugh at themselves.

Romney's opening joke was funny, very funny, but he took it personally and could not enjoy it.

Everyone here is ridiculous. Both these men are way better individuals than anyone on this board. They both are great fathers and true family men that care about the future of this country. Albeit, they have a lot different views on how to help this country, but that doesn't mean one cares more than the other. I will be voting for Romeny because his view for the future is more in line with how I beleive we should be heading. Does that mean I hate and despise Obama, NO!. I will be behind him if he is elected because he will still be MY and every other American's President. I have never seen this country more divided then it is today. The people on both sides that spit hate back and forth at each other are the real problems in this country. We are all Americans people. Start acting like it and stop being belligerent, hateful, and ignorant Democrats or Republicans. Grow up and start acting like civil adults and true American citizens.

Proud, you know that you are absolutely right in what your saying and deep down alot of us know it. It's really sad that despite your words very little will change. It's hard to stay civil and respectfull which ever side you take when people will continue spew lies and making hateful statements just because they can and they are so into which ever candidate they root for and so hatefull of the one they don't. EAch side wants to say their guy won each of the debates when if fact they were so close that what it all boils down to is just on how you interprete the information. Attacking the candidates wives and childen is also pretty damned disgusting. Particularly the way Mrs. Romney and her kids are being treated. Just because they have alot of money doesn't make it right to make up a bunch of false misleading statements. DO you see anybody going after the Obama girls?? I haven't seen one horrible nasty thing said about them even though attacking the kids has been par for the course in pretty much every election that I can remember!!!! Is it just becasue they are so young? Would they be subject to all the nasty crap if they were already teens or young adults?? Probably so. Religious beliefs being attacked is pretty crappy too. I willing to bet most people attacking the Mormom faith don't know the first thing about the faith at all. Only going on what they've heard of they way the church was in the past. EVERY religion there is has been GUILTY of some pretty horrible things and well as some pretty great things.

I agree with supporting a President as an American. The problem I see is that both of these men actually represent 20% of our population whether it be far right socially engineering conservatives or far left socially engineering liberals. Do I despise them as men? No, I despise their ideals. Especially when they won't represent the other 80% of us. As far as being a proud American, I will become one when lobbyists from the far left and far right are no longer able to buy policy, both foreign and domestic.

And I hold Congress to the same measure. As I see it, it is a structural problem within the government and is hardly representative of the American people and the majorities true ideals.

      hiap;

What did you do pick out choice little tid-bits of my post to my your point? First I said ALL politicians are Lairs, con-men, scoundrels and thieves.

And if Romney reported $20 million, it is an accounting certainty he made much more than that because of the same adjustments to his income they all, including Mr. "O" use. Just as Obama adjusted his personal income down to $1.7 million for 2011. Accounting 101, take a class.

Do you not adjust your income on you federal return and as such your state return? You're going to tell me you pay full tax without deduction, exemption or credit? Really? They use all those and more. It matters not where the income originates, it all has to be declared and/or adjusted. Book sales,,, by a sitting President, seems a conflict of interest to me. Is he not supposed to be conducting OUR business while in office? Yet, he finds the time to write books,,,,,, Hmmm. What does he overlook when concentrating on personal business? All before him waited until they LEFT office to publish, if memory serves.

Read the post not just bits and pieces, I trust NO politician. Party is of no consequence. None in the last thirty years has demonstrated the forthrightness to be trusted, as far as I am concerned. You can trust these snake oil salesmen if you like. I trust those who prove they are worthy of it. And at this point that would be,,,,, NONE! All you have done is provide reasons to trust them even less.

Big Brother meets Big Data: Governments start scrutinizing credit card records

        By Bob Sullivan

The economy is so bad in Argentina that the government recently said it would start taxing overseas credit card purchases. It also demanded that banks report all credit card transactions -- foreign or domestic -- saying the data would be used to find tax cheats.

Even George Orwell couldn't have imagined this meeting of Big Brother and Big Data: a handy database of every single purchase made by citizens, ready to be categorized and analyzed by the government. Let your mind wander for a moment and you can imagine the disturbing possibilities of a government so invasive that it knows when and where you buy milk and bread.

The mother of one of four Americans killed in the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya lashed out at President Barack Obama on Friday for saying the attack was “not optimal.”

“My son is not very optimal. He is also very dead,” Patricia Smith, 72, the mother of Sean Smith, told the Daily Mail. “It was a disrespectful thing to say, and I don't think it’s right.

“How can you say somebody being killed is not very optimal? I don't think the President has the right idea of the English language,” she said.

In an interview on “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central, Obama responded to a question from host Jon Stewart about his administration's confused communication after the assault by saying, “If four Americans get killed, it’s not optimal.”

The attack at the consulate in Benghazi also killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and security men and former U.S. Navy SEALs Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods.

You want a dignified president capable of handling the job. Lefties are not that way.

I'll say it again. None of this matters in the election. The only thing that matters to most of the apathetic population of the USA is that Obama is cute, smiles big, and has become a rock star! Celebrity is all that matters.

"Gee, did you see him on the view? He's a great guest and all the hostesses loved him! He's got my vote!"

"He is so cool! You can tell he really cares about us!"

"I'm not worried about high gas prices, mortgages or anything! Barack said he would take care of it!"

Mr. Noah - Not sure Romney's jokes and delivery were all that good. He looks sooooo uncomfortable in situations like this. When you use self-deprecracating humor, it should be delivered dead-pan and then you should laugh at yourself. Sorry, Mitt's just a strange guy. Regarding Romney and Trusts:
As a freshman senator, Barack Obama—whose wealth comes almost entirely from his book royalties—set up a blind trust but later that same year sold all of his stocks and closed the trust because he decided that even such an arrangement could not protect him from the appearance of a conflict. Most of his wealth is now invested in U.S. Treasury bonds and diversified funds—about the most transparent option available. What’s good for the country is good for Obama, and vice versa, to coin a phrase.

Romney declared at one point: “The blind trust is an age-old ruse.” He takes a slightly different tack to run today, but even his own spokeswoman, Andrea Saul, has acknowledged that if he’s elected, he’ll move his wealth into a new, stricter blind trust. It begs the questions, “So Romney, you can be trusted for a stricter trust? Define stricter in your manipulated Dictionary of I Can Do Anything I Want Because I’m a Haves and You’re a HaveNot.

Owen: Great job, thanks for posting. We need to be reminded over and over. The Romney campaign has doubled their force. “Attention all Mormons and die-hard repub/tparty. You know how we dinged CA Prop 8, that was small time, we’re going all out for the presidency. We’ll spend what needs to be spent to steal this election. Hey, we have now at least $1Billion ‘invested’ in this boy child and expect a great return. Keep cramming those lies in there. Said often enough, Americans will believe anything. Worked to put bush/cheney in and we can do it again.”

Sleuth23 #1.16: There is no “relax you guys” with a viper. Never turn your back on a snake, Sensala did and bought Bain’s their spiel line and sinker. Tune in MSNBC Ed Schutz tonite and catch “relax” on their ‘trust me.”

Honest Dave: Romney pledged to his church first, Romney Family Trust, et al, second, Norquist third, Chinese fourth. Americans are vying for a place in his sketch.

Larry Stauth Jr: You and we know your responses are moot. Keep defending Romney. For people like you, it’s much easier than facing the reality that you’re wrong in supporting Romney/Ryan. When you stop banging your head against the wall, your headache will disappear.

Rangewolf: You’re so behind. Prez Obama’s Hawaii was debunked almost immediately. Money? Some investments Prez Obama made, putting his money into US Treasury notes, and a whopping $11 in some mutual fund that invested in China. You’re no fun. And take your deskmate, joe t, with you. It appears Romney will go all out to even up with Prez Obama personally, not politically as one might think. That kicker was Romney's reference to Prez Obama's family - trying to put balm on the nasty cutthroat digs he gave out. His presentation was to put our President in his place. Romney is frustrated and impatient, a dangerous combination, needing constant pats, but watch out if you cross him. Romney carries vengeance before him at all times.

Prez Obama, in case it escaped notice, has a dignity about him at all times, that's who and what he is. He rises above pettiness, and that can only be done through a deep spirituality and belief, really deep. A security that he's doing and saying the right thing. And the Pres has the wisdom of a much older person. This President Obama has respect for ALL, I think, my opinion after doing much research, that supercedes what we carry with us, that negative baggage tweaking at all times. If only...

A lot of you you knock Romney for "shipping" jobs overseas for cheaper labor benefits missed what the President said during the last debate...or you ignore it.

"Those jobs leaving the country are low skill jobs and they aren't coming back"

At least Romney is campaigning to stop it. But what he is doing wasn't illegal. Never was. Most of you would make a buck any way you could. It's why cheaper goods not made in this country THRIVE. It's why WalMart is the one of the biggest places in the world.

But to act like Obama is saving those jobs or will when he hasn't YET IN FOUR YEARS is just sad and silly.

low skill jobs are needed for the millions of border jumping illegals

Otherwise non citizens will be taking your jobs away oh wait that has already started and Obama gave them a free ticket to do so.

brian-1924638. If you really watched the debate you would have also heard Mitt say, "it is not the governments job to create jobs." The president is correct about some jobs are not coming back because their are several jobs that are becoming obsolete. For example, if you notice banks are pushing for online banking, with online banking you can do anything such as deposit funds, transfer, and etc. They are slowly getting rid of Tellers which in terms will cause this position to become obsolete. With the advancements of science and technology this is making this possible, that is why President Obama is pushing for more Science and Math employees because this is where the world is heading to.

                  @Brian

Please explain how a seated president, without completely upending the Constitution, can tell privately held companies that they cannot send jobs to countries where the wages are $.50 per hour instead of $25.00 per hour and where the safety of the workers is non-existant. The ONLY way a president can try to stop the migration of jobs is to pen legislation to remove the tax credits those companies take for their out-of-country activities (you know, the ones Romney said he didn't know anything about). President Obama did ...

Bring Jobs Home Act S.3364) - GOP voted no
Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act (S.2237) - GOP voted no

Bill to create jobs by providing payroll tax relief for middle class families and businesses (S.1917) - GOP voted no
Rebuild America Jobs Act (S.1769) - GOP voted no

Guess WHO would not pass these bills, not because they were bad for the American middle class and small businesses - they were GOOD for the American middle class and small businesses - but because the GOP was playing politics in an effort to insure that President Obama was not able to make things better for America.

Your boy, Romney, talks out of both sides of his mouth regarding job creation. He says that the government cannot create jobs, but that is not true. By awarding contracts to private companies by using tax revenues for the purpose of rebuilding our infrastructure (roads, bridges, schools, water treatment plants, etc.) the government DOES, in effect, create private sector jobs.

Romney says it is not the job of the government or the president to create jobs ... then, 10 minutes later, he says that, when he is president, he will create jobs. Huh?!?

We do not need Romney, a delusional, multi-personality-disorder, self-centered elitist, in the White House. We need a president who cares about 100% of the American people, not the top 1 or 2 percent.

Welfare spending has grown substantially over the past four years, reaching $746 billion in 2011 — or more than Social Security, basic defense spending or any other single chunk of the federal government — according to a new memo by the Congressional Research Service.

The steady rise in welfare spending, which covers more than 80 programs primarily designed to help low-income Americans, got a big boost from the 2009 stimulus and has grown, albeit somewhat more slowly, in 2010 and 2011. One reason is that more people are qualifying in the weak economy, but the federal government also has broadened eligibility so that more people qualify for programs.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, who requested the Congressional Research Service report, said it underscores a fundamental shift in welfare, moving away from a Band-Aid and toward a more permanent crutch.

“No longer should we measure compassion by how much money the government spends but by how many people we help to rise out of poverty,” the Alabama conservative said. “Welfare assistance should be seen as temporary whenever possible and the goal must be to help more of our fellow citizens attain gainful employment and financial independence.”

Overall, welfare spending as measured by obligations has grown from $563 billion in fiscal 2008 to $746 billion in fiscal 2011, or a jump of 32 percent.

The report from CRS -- a nonpartisan service that provides policy and legal analysis to members of Congress and staffers, regardless of party affiliation -- tells a complex story of American taxpayers’ generosity in supporting a varied social safety net, ranging from food stamps to support for low-income AIDS patients to child-care payments to direct cash going from taxpayers to the poor.

Romney was hilarious and the crowd laughed very hard through his set and Obama had some good lines and the crowd seemed to enjoy his set also. In that case, I still have to go with Jerry Seinfeld for Pres. What are your options? George and Kramer? I think not.

You must not have listened to the actual statements from the President.

You know, David, I am an old guy. I am one of the few people you will ever meet that actually saw Saul and heard him speak. Here is the bad news, David. Karl Rove has passed out copies of Saul's stuff...but I have never (in fifty years of going to political stuff for Democrats) heard one single person mention him. Not one, not ever. He is not a handbook. The only people I know studying him are the Tea Party friends I go to dinner with...and they are convinced everyone in Obama's administration is running off Saul's instructions. It is the weirdest single fantasy your side has...no basis in fact. None. Zip.

And by the way, Saul would have laughed his ass off at anyone thinking a President would gain office or run a country on his ideas. He was totally against any kind of party.

I see a lot of suffering everyday by working class people who don't have any money for basics. It is insane to repeat the same mistakes of the last four years. Don't forget, it was Clinton's banking policies that created the mortgage crisis and you didn't hear Bush blaming Clinton; he had more class than that. Obama tells more lies and has a dismal record. Can't wait to see him leave office. He doen't even know what is in his portfolio, how can he manage the countries.

This said Romney tonight, with his intelligence and class, was truly OFF THE CHARTS, and the main Liberal press had no other recourse but to stand idly by - surely in frustration (are you still grinding your teeth in anger Candy Crowley in that you couldn't butt in? - while he short-circuited their naked biased campaign at the shallow caricature depiction of him they have been trying to impose on the American people.

Buffaloes Roam: I'm getting old too, and I've got plenty of liberal friends. I'd never heard of Saul Alinsky until a few months ago, when some conservative on this blog brought him up as some kind of liberal's guide to politics. I hadn't thought too hard about it, but now that you mention it, I've gotta admit I've never heard anybody other than conservatives so much as mention his name. That was probably your first clue that David was referring to democrats in his strange, off-topic remark.

Yet they all seem to think he's our leader or something. I guess when you live in an echo chamber, anything can become true to you.

Personally, I never ran to 'Atlas Shrugged' or any other Rand writing to get my beliefs.

As far as I can see, the difference between the two, (Alinsky and Rand) is that while Rand was an author, screenwriter, and Broadway producer, who saw America's FREEDOM as much closer to her ideal, Alinsky was a political activist who hated the American system of government. Period.

So again, why would ANYONE want to wear that on their sleeve?

Nobody brings up or references Alinsky and especially not at the end all and be all of political thought. Paul Ryan himself specifically references Ayn Rand as guiding his political and economic philosophy. He had to dial it down a bit when Rand's views on religion didn't square with his.

Smart people read a lot and pursue differing opinions, philosophies, insights and information in order to make up their own minds. They consider what is said and the time and circumstances in which it was said. Just because they read, study or talk to a particular person doesn't mean they believe them, follow them slavishly or pursue their beliefs unquestionably. If you meet anyone like that, run! It means they don't think for themselves, and surround themselves with "yes men."

Basically you have the same thing. I've seen it over and over again. Candidates running against each other. Most of the time it is behind the scenes that you see them shaking hands and patting each other on the back. Wake up, America!! The only difference is some of their policies. And, BTW, Obama is not poor by any means. I read somewhere a long time ago that he collects over $700,000 a month for something -- I wish I had copied it at the time. Romney has made his money, and being president for either of them is a power play, not a way to make a living.

For those with the comments about draft dodging. This is unimportant -- because Bill Clinton did the same thing. He left the country to avoid going to war. Poor veterans, the Vietnam war was not a popular thing. But I respect every veteran. They fought for their country.

snake... where have you been for the last 4 years?? Have you noticed any of the Chicago MOBpolitical, now Radical- Bunch of wackos now controlling DC?? . .Saul Alinsky -Rule for Radicals--, Bill Ayers--Terrorist & murderer-- , Valerie Jarrett, Frank Davis....All of them are Crooks, Scoundrels, liars & Cheats.. obama has them as his confidants and guides. These associations alone would sink any person, not being shielded by a corrupt Media using carefully scripted Propaganda to mislead public opinion. -It is the Chicago organizer way, after all!!

The fact that Barack Hussen obama has not distanced himself from these people speaks volumes, to those who can think for themselves! Hillary even lets their twisted reason guide her politically.

It would be a great joke, if it was not so very Scarey and UN-American!!

Romney told the formal white tie and gown crowd that, "it's nice to finally relax and wear what Anne and I wear around the house."

I'm not so sure Mutt was joking, given how out of touch he is with the working man's plight. In any case, I doubt many people are laughing, particularly those in unemployment lines, homeless shelters and gutters all across America.

You have the President to thank for the high rate of unemployment Al Kyda. Give credit where credit is due. We don't need another 4 years of this misery. Vote them all out in November. The President failed to get the economy back on its feet like he promised 4 years ago so its time to send him home.

You apparently haven't considered the mess Obama is leaving for Gov.Romney. While he continues to live in luxury while the rest of us have to struggle to survive. I bet your wife would love to have a few days of having maids and chefs cook and clean for her. I bet she would love to be able to go on a nice vacation and not have to worry about the cost.

Obama and MooMoo will be laying around on the beach or enjoying the elite estate they are buying in Hawaii with the taxpayers money that he has rerouted public funds into his own bank account and is laughing because he is getting away with robbing the American taxpayers.

Just look at the situation he is leaving our country in. Why are you supporting him?

The joke about the white tie formal dress was the best of his speech. That and the Big Bird joke were good. Other than that he got a little mean but those jokes were the only ones that I remember that were totally at his own expense and that is what makes these things funny. The rest was kind of funny but mostly directed at someone or something else like Obama and the media. That just makes someone sound think skinned.

The repubs have been running billboards, in SPANISH, saying you need your ID to vote in PA...which you don't.

They've been running billboards in poor black areas threatening jail and fines if you commit voter fraud (30 or so in iowa and 20+ in Wisconsin).

Voter registration ballots had the WRONG date for the election on them in Arizona...but only the ones printed in SPANISH.

Illegal redistricting in Texas and WI have been caught, but it's too late to change them before the election.

Lies, manipulation, threats, election fraud and voter suppression...that's the only way Repubs will win. What is scary is that, although illegal, it may be enough to get their way. When finally settled in the courts, it'll be too late.

Republican Representatives are disgusting, manipulative liars who willingly pass ILLEGAL and Unconstitutional laws for their benefits.

My 1 question to R's is..."What would Romney have to do to LOSE your vote?" 99.99% of you cannot think of a single thing. You vote for him because he's NOT Obama -or- he's an R. That's why this race is so close. When you realize this it is time to do some serious rethinking of your values and rational thinking processes.

Why should anyone be allowed to vote without an ID? Why in the hell would this be excepted by a certain party?

Unless...That party is looking for unregistered and illegal votes.

Already, 3 have been indicted for voter fraud in Ohio. Another 64 more are being investigated since mailings returned back to the voter registration by the U.S. Postal Service apparently did not have valid addresses !

                                    Imagine that !

gdale - I don't understand why everyone on the ballot isn't included in the debates. They used to be. At the very least it could force the "main" candidates (and us) to consider other views on important issues.

So, the Libertarian and Green parties arent 'a third and fourth choice?

The two party system is, in reality. just one party. Both driven by monied interests who have security clearances higher than the CIC. What's that say about whom is running the show?

As for this little suaree' in New York...

There was alot of money in that room and the seperation of church and state with the cardinal seated between the president and his challenger. Injecting the will of the Rome?

I don't know why I feel compelled to comment on these articles because I'm not stumping for any candidate. I find the whole process of politics nothing but a scummy scam.

Reading the, grammar and eroneous spelling mistakes in the comments posted by my peers makes me afraid that the country I have served is on the fast track to an idiocracy or worse a theocracy.

Mr. Villareal: Not sure I agree that Gov. Romney, and most other republicans, want to make our country a better place. At least not in the way WE'RE thinking. It's apparent that they would like it to be better for themselves and other wealthy folks. There truly doesn't seem to be much concern for the rest of us. The republicans, including Mitt, have fought like crazy to keep the minimum wage where it is or eliminate it. Tell me, WHO CAN LIVE ON THAT? WHO??? Pay for the upper level management in all companies has increased at incredible increments over the past 15 years (and more). How much has the average wage-earners' pay gone up? They are trying to eliminate unions, which are a big part of the reason we even have a middle class and benefits that only the rich used to have - like paid vacations, pensions and sick days. Their claim that if we can just make the rich richer, it'll solve everything, create jobs, increase pay, blah, blah, is such crap. The rich have been getting richer for decades, while the poor get poorer and the middle class is disappearing. How is that making our country a better place?

I would agree that both men truly feel like they will do what they have to do and try to their best. Do you truly believe freelancer that Romney is "in it for himself and the rich" the rich don't need this kind of hassle, they can all go be rich by themselves and have a great time with worrying about running the largest economic country in the world. Besides the job don't pay so well. Not the kind of salary that they are use to.

Romney has many motives. I honestly believe that both men take the position of President with total responsibility. But Romney sees life differently than most Americans. I was raised Mormon in his era. I went through 4 years of seminary while going to high school we walked across the street for a class. Almost everyone in the school did. But.... I could not go out as a missionary because I was a female. Women are put in a position of responsibility of taking care of the family. That is why he talks about women as he does. As a woman in the church you are taught to obey your husband. This may seem minor but there are other influences of the church. If you listen to the "47%" video - really listen, he does not care about "all Americans" He and Anne truly believe they are better and the position of being President is one of POWER. I paid 23% FIT and SS tax..... He paid only 14% because of capital gains. He proposes to remove all tax on interest, dividends, capital gains and estates. This only benefits those that have capital wealth... all they do is accumulate more wealth... that is not who invests in business and take the risks and make jobs. If he is elected, I feel sorry for the future unless you happen to have capital wealth.

To answer your question yes I truly believe Romney is for himself and the rich. Its simply called greed. Look at all the record breaking profits during the recession. Yet the poor and middle class suffer. With a position of power he can try to get more tax breaks for the rich. Reason I say more is if you look at Bush's Tax Cuts it gave cuts to the rich. I didn't see any improvement from it, did you.

                                          www.taxpolicycenter.org/briefing-book/background/bush-tax-cuts/ignore.cfm

Have you taken a look in a little depth at Mitt Romney's past.

                                          themoderatevoice.com/131343/mitt-romney-got-filthy-rich-firing-workers-not-creating-jobs/

I think one of the problems is that min. wage is not sufficient for alot of people. What happens when min wage is raised though is the prices of everything else goes up. Do you truly think these company with record breaking profits need to raise price to compensate for a slightly higher min wage? Or Would you say greed?

Now on another note look at the numerous times Mitt has flip flopped. I am not going to say Obama is a saint and that I believe evreything he has said or done is the right thing. However looking at the two I have to say I much rather have Obama in office then someone who may ultimately destroy any chance of recovery and make things a whole lot worse.

Spot on padikit! I would not trust Robme when it come to dealing with foreign powers either, he comes from a position of arrogance, like others should genuflect when he walks into a room or something. All he knows, has ever known is the so-called "upper-class" so his 47% speech was no slip of the tongue. He really believes that! besides, the number, the 47% was too specific. If he was just running his mouth without thinking (which he has done on occasion, just not this one) the number would most likely have been a nice, round number like 50% or something. The when he was outed, he tries the old flip-flop on again saying that he cares about 100% of the people. Sure Mittwit, and I'm Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile! If a man, or woman, does not stand by their own word(s), how can they be trusted at all? I do not trust Robme!

Actually to vote for either one of these candidates you have plug your nose and close your eyes and take a stab and see which one your stab was closest to then vote for him. I think i would rather see Obama in there than Romney. At least Obama appears to be working for the middle class finally. You have to take Mitts word that he will fight for the middle class. Mitt has lost all creditablity and has backed tracked in his campaign promises when he was Gov. of Mass. So what make you think that this time will be any different if he elected?

MA was glad to be rid of Romney. That's a fact. His record is one for the books. He took the governorship only as a stepping stone, that's how his handlers planned it. Pretty much the same way with bush, no difference in the strategy.

Best quote of the night, helping script-writers aside:

After his introduction, Obama asked the crowd to "please take your seats, otherwise Clint Eastwood will yell at them."

But the truth, maybe out of place tonight, always hurts:

"I have my beautiful wife, Ann; he's got Bill Clinton."

happytimes - Last I looked in Willard's time in the mid-sixties France was about 80% Catholic - I doubt he knocked on many Chateau doors to convert Catholics to Mormonism

He hid out - waiting out the Viet Nam War

By the way - Ann was also busy she was dating someone else at that time and when she found out the guy she was dating wanted to be a Professor at a College - she promptly called her lap dog back

What does a Professor make versus a meal ticket she can groom?

Barbara: Always look forward to your posts. Is it true that on the View Ann told them that Romney was so upset when she told him she was dating another person that he took ill and was hospitalized? Get off my back. He was in the hospital because of the car accident where a person was killed. What's wrong with those people that they can't just tell a truth, anywhere?

FYI: For some of us lucky people there's a rerun of the Daily Show sometime today where Prez Obama appears.

MSNBC Ed Schultz 8p. EDT on the Freeport IL company moving, thanks to Bain, to China, losing 200 jobs.

Barbara and earthgirl-You don't know a damned thing about the Romneys' personal lives so stop trying to pretend that you do. You make me sick trying to state you know Ann dumped some guy because he didn't make enough money, blah, blah, blah, lie, lie, twist and contort the truth, some more blah, blah, blah. That's what the two you add up to. Grow up and talk about some real issues. OR is it that your lies and BS are all you got because you can't defend Obamas' DISMAL record???

Sorry skrewdworld - So we know nothing anout the Romney's personal life - Well all you have to do is go to the sources

It is true that Ann was dating someone else while Willard was in France because her ex-beau was interviewed and said so

And Willard's car accident in France and a death of a passenger is also well documented

Now in your scewry world how can the right wingers know so much about the Obama's personal life?

They don't, they make it up like looking to buy a $40 Million House in Hawaii which has been totally been debunked yet they go on and on - and oh yes the President was born in Kenya which is a lie ,yet they cling to these lies

So don't tell me I don't know what I post - I do extensive research from many sources - I contrary to your delusional friends don't lie I ABHOR LIARS!

Of course Obama enjoyed himself, he knows his days in office are almost over and he won't have to worry about being impeached anymore. Romney is facing a disaster to clean up after being sworn in, he should be tense.

Real facts are what matters not invented over interpreted one liners. I am glad that the two candidates can get along and have some fun.

There were definitely worse presidents than Obama and most of them never got impeached. I would worry for the country if we just impeached presidents because certain people didn't like them. We would get nowhere! Being president is a hard job for any one person to do by themselves.

Romney and Obama... they are both sponsored by big banks, corporations, and the wealthy elite (including music artists). The real question is, which of them can actually do a better job as POTUS. Can either one of them get the Congress and the House to actually do their elected jobs and pass bills? Obama has been an inept leader at best, while Romney is untested in that position. Four more years! Or give someone else a chance? Tough call.

Wonder what could have been accomplished had the republican "leaders" not announced 5 minutes after Obama was elected that their only mission would be to keep BO from getting re-elected, NOT "let's save this country and get things moving for THE PEOPLE." Obama hadn't even been sworn it yet!

Whatever happened to guys like Tip O'Neil (dem) who worked hard to get Congress and Reagan to work together, to compromise for the good of THE PEOPLE and THE COUNTRY? That's the main reason Reagan was able to get the country out of the TEN PERCENT UNEMPLOYMENT while he was president. And he didn't even have to deal with the worst financial disaster this country has ever had that affected housing, employment, pensions and everything else.

Things are moving ahead slowly. Why would we want to stop that now and go back to the failed republican policies of the past? Only Romney's policies would be Bush's policies on steroids. Frightening.

The only thing more frightening is the level of hate and distortions that come from the party of tolerance.

Drew - Oh my god I'm an elitist - my grandmother and grandfather came from Lithuania - had ten children lost one at 6 weeks with pneumonia

Gave two sons to WW11 - one on the Bataan Death March - the other on a PT Boat - yet my mother managed to own and run a beauty shop and put me through Catholic Schools - even though she didn't finish high school - because girls in her generation stepped aside to allow the brothers to graduate

Yet my Mom and her three sisters all have children who graduated college and the uncles who where left all have children who graduated college - my cousin is a VP with Dupont living Austria

And my three children all have graduated college as my two sisters' children - and my son's daughters are college graduates - and my daughters' - two daughters are in college

So Drew I guess we are the so called "elite" or come from many generations who appreciate the value of an educated society - unlike your Republicans who think education is dangerous

                                                        ELITE? HOW ABOUT INFORMED?

Mitt was funny but I think he started to edge too much towards blatant Obama attacks. It got painful to watch after a while. Obama on the other hand killed it. Part of being a likable person is being able to legitimately make fun of yourself; Romney just does not have those skills, Obama does.

That said they were both good. My two favorites from Obama were the apology to Chris and his OBL line.

For Mitt my two favorite where his opening line and the Sesame Street bought to you buy bit.

Overall though Mitt did worse than Obama but a modest amount (maybe 3%) but in the point I made above Mitt got a D and Obama got an A.

7 jokes about the Pres/Biden from Romney

3 jokes about Romney/Ryan from Obama

Romney made possibly 2 jokes about himself

                                                        Obama made at least 6.

You guys need to lighten up and stop getting so bent out of shape every time Romney or Obama open their mouths. You're going to end up with ulcers. Believe it or not there is a life outside of politics. You think politicians spend every waking moment thinking about politics? Romney and Obama know how to relax and have a good time. Maybe you should learn how. Take a look at your post's. They're the saddest jokes of all.

And president Obama has never paraded around with signs saying he supports any war. Personally, I'd much rather support a president who works for peace than one who wants to start two more wars (which, of course, will benefit his wealthy military industry buddies), even tho the two we already have aren't paid for (and are partially the cause of Bush's recession). And then we'd have to point out that none of his grandkids are serving in those wars.

Mitt gave all of his father's inheritance to charity and I am wondering how Obama helped the less fortunate in Chicago. They seem to still be the less fortunate in Chicago, except for the thug politicians that got wealthy off of their votes. I can't say they got wealthy off of their tax dollars bc most of them pay none, including the politicians from Chicago.

All Obama did as a community organizer was gather his base for votes to destroy our country. ACORN come to mind? Under Obama Chicago will always be less fortunate and many more around the country bc he looks at all of us as just that, the unfortunate.

Are you calling people being fortunate to be out of work, drawing unemployment for years, depending on food stamps, harboring a poor education, and living a life of crime fortunate? If so I guess you are right about Obama, but most of us want more for ourselves, which Romney is offering. Romney was hilarious, but the only sad thing was the fact that all but what he said about himself was true.

Romney is nothing short of a coward who had to run away to avoid the draft. Why is it ok that I did a tour in Viet Nam while he was hiding in France? Why is it ok that my grandson died in Iraq while his sons are to good to join the military? Romney's problem is he has a medical condition,"no guts".

Willard is a fake and a fraud!! His son Taggert should be brought up on charges for threats against the President!!!!!

OHIO HAS ALREADY GONE TO PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!!!!

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said there is a collapse of the “US empire” on the way because of a combination of massive debt and its loss of legitimacy within the international community, according to Iran’s official news agency, IRNA.

“How long can a government with a $16 trillion foreign debt remain a world power?” Ahmadinejad asked at a press conference with Kuwaiti media personnel. “The Americans have injected their paper wealth into the world economy and today the aftermaths and negative effects of their pseudo-wealth have plagued them.”

He went on, “An empire, or a government, remains in power so long as the people under its power support it, but today the Americans have acted in a way that the world nations do not like them at all, and therefore, their international legitimacy is annihilated.”

It's flat out bizarre. And their ward leaders are often untrained and inept. And yes, sadly a number of family members got sucked into that nonsense.

There was or is no discrimination against women or blacks or any other group of people. Happytimes, your list of scare tactics are also false and meant to mislead. If you really believe these things, then I'm sorry you are so wrong on so many things. And even if they were true, then so what?? Are any of those things hurting you somehow?? Or anyone else for that matter? You probably both believe you are tolerant. Instead your comments are judgmental and arrogant, and funny enough, totally untrue.

The sociopathic Mr. Romney, lacking heart, and being not fully human, cannot comprehend the kind of social occasion that is the Alfred E. Smith dinner. Mr. Romney continued his attack on Mr. Obama with pathetic attempts at humor.

It is not surprising that Mr. Romney, seemingly bereft of emotional intelligence, managed to offend the people of Massachusetts, whom he governed for only one term, so much that they favor Mr. Obama by a wide margin. It is not surprising that Mr. Romney so readily offends allied leadership. Mr. Romney never learned to play well in the sandbox. He is incapable of playing well in the sandbox.

Instead he allowed his terrorist brothers to go in and rape and torture these American citizens and then tried to blame it on a video. He was in a rush to get to Las Vegas so he could appear as a guest on The View and didn't want to be bothered having to play president. This is a situation we should ALL remember and NOT sweep under the rug.

Actually, the security asked for was for the Tripoli embassy, Benghazi is a "consulate" hundreds of miles away, so far evidence points to a militant radical muslim group who spontaneously organized 2 hours after the reports of the Egypt attack, based off of the video. They drove up, fired their RPG's and SMG's and took off. I'm no security expert, but those kinds of attacks are tough to stop or even discover before they happen.

But keep on trying to make this a deep political issue, despite the wishes of the family not to politicize death. Romney has no positive foreign policy experience, Obama has a wealth of successful and diplomatic experiences. This is honestly one point of experience you have to give to Obama.

Although I am not religious, I don't have any qualms about supporting the freedom to practice whatever religion (or none) you want, as long as it's not rammed down anyone's throat and it doesn't violate the tenets of separation of church and state. HOWEVER, the Mormon cult is not a "mainstream" religion -- it's a secret society, racist, sexist and strange, and they're making a concerted effort to take control of local governments. Gov. Romney certainly has every right to practice it, and I have every right to worry about someone who believes such nonsense.

Religious cults can pose dangers to others. For example, an American President with control of tremendous military power, a weak mind, poor impulse control, and bizarre religious ideation like personally being destined to lead America in nuclear Armageddon against Russia, is a potentially very dangerous religious cultist.

Instead, all I ever been asked to show is tolerance and forgiveness. I am encouraged to refrain from vitriolic attacks and defenses. Your opinion matters but my first-hand experience is directly opposite what you describe.

My experience with family sucked into mormonism was NOT tolerance, rather separation - a wedge driven, and disastrous results.

In another situation, not in my family, my counsel to an intelligent young mormon girl - accepted to Brigham Young - was to lie about her intimate involvement with a second boyfriend (not supposed to fool around at all), so her ward leader didn't have to report her - and be potentially barred from BYU. She went, very happy, boyfriend is history, and now she just hangs with the other mormon kids - it's her comfort zone. It's all good - thankfully she never got knocked up, but ridiculous to have to be a hypocrite.

Its not unusual for people in corporations to get promoted to positions they fail at. That's what happen to Obama; the American people promoted him to a position he couldn't possibly succeed at and he failed. Now its time to recognize that fact and move on.

Maybe that is why if Obama is reelected it will condemn our country to suicide by Obama. As a human being like any other human being that can fail, its not hard to see and understand why Obama is in over his head and turned out to be the worse president this country has ever had.

As a human being, Obama bit off more than he could chew and now our country is gagging as a result.

We need someone who is SERIOUS about tackling our budget (actually even someone who could ACTUALLY GET A BUDGET PASSED would be a good candidate. Someone who can WORK WITH THE OTHER SIDE - not like Obama who has such a devisive nature THAT HE IS THE ONE PERPETRATING GRIDLOCK IN CONGRESS.
