Ryan asked for federal help as he championed cuts

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, a fiscal conservative and critic of federal handouts, has sought for his constituents in Wisconsin an expansion of food stamps, stimulus money, federally guaranteed business loans, grants to invest in green technology and money under President Barack Obama's health care reform law.

Such requests are at odds with Ryan's public persona as a small-government advocate and tea party favorite who has pledged to tighten Washington's belt.

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., during the vice presidential debate at Centre College Oct. 11, 2012, in Danville, Ky.

The Associated Press reviewed 8,900 pages of correspondence between Ryan's congressional office and more than 70 executive branch agencies that it obtained under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act. They showed that for 12 years as a member of Congress, Ryan has sought from the federal government money and benefits that in some cases represent the kinds of largess and specific programs he is now campaigning against.

Related: Ryan wades deep into lengthy Afghanistan argument

As Mitt Romney's running mate, Ryan calls those kinds of handouts big-government overreaching. He tells crowds he supports smaller government and rails against what he calls Obama's wasteful spending, including the president's $800 billion stimulus program.
"The stimulus was a case of political patronage, corporate welfare and cronyism at their worst," Ryan said during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention. "You, the working men and women of this country, were cut out of the deal."

And during Thursday's vice presidential debate, Ryan said the stimulus amounted to "$90 billion in green pork to campaign contributors and special-interest groups."

But Ryan's constituents benefited from stimulus spending and other government-assistance programs, according to AP's review. Ryan once told federal regulators that cutting a stimulus grant for a town in his district at the 11th hour would be "economically devastating."
Much of Ryan's correspondence is similar to other lawmakers performing constituent duties, describing problems that residents have reported. They include requests such as assisting a family missing airline baggage and helping a man who didn't receive a pancake maker he had ordered.

Related: Biden plays aggressor in debate as Ryan argues GOP case

But in other correspondence, Ryan explicitly supports programs and encourages federal agencies to take actions. He supported in his congressional letters some Wisconsin farms' share of an $11.8 million loan guarantee, but later criticized other loan guarantees, such as the $535 million loan that went to now-defunct solar panel maker Solyndra. He asked transportation officials for a grant for green technology and alternative fuels, although his proposed budget as House budget chairman called loans for electric car development "corporate welfare."

He's also supported federal money to help a Kenosha, Wis., community center cover health care costs of low-income families under Obama's health care reform law — the very program he and Romney say they will repeal if they win the White House.

NBC's Domenico Montanaro recaps the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.  Instant polls after the debate showed a split decision among voters about the winner.

Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck said AP's findings represented a member of Congress helping people in his district. "Part of being a congressman is vouching for constituents and helping them navigate the federal bureaucracy when asked," he said.

Among the ways Ryan went to bat for his constituents, as detailed in his correspondence:

—A Kenosha, Wis., community center's grant proposal under the Food Stamps Access Research program, to educate families about the nutritional benefits of food stamps. Ryan said in a 2002 letter the program would increase the enrollment of eligible individuals in the program by providing laptop computers to pre-screen applicants. Ryan's budget proposed cutting food stamps by $134 billion over 10 years, although his spokesman said he "has always made clear we need a strong safety net."

—Letters offering support or forwarding requests for projects funded by stimulus money. Ryan's May 2009 letter to a regional Environmental Protection Agency office asked for its "full consideration" in awarding grant money to an organization under the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program, which reduces diesel emissions.

Ryan also wrote to the EPA in 2009 on behalf of a small town trying to secure $550,000 in stimulus money for utility repairs. Ryan, whose staff requested meetings with the EPA about the matter, said the rescinding of the grant "would be economically devastating" to Sharon, Wis., since it already began spending the money. (The EPA said project costs were incurred before October 2008, making the project ineligible for stimulus cash.) Ryan has also voiced support for millions in EPA grant money to clean up abandoned building sites in Wisconsin towns.

Former Ohio governor Ted Strickland, D-Ohio, talks about vice president Joe Biden's debating skills.

—A 2002 Department of Agriculture loan guarantee to develop a pork-packing and processing plant for farms in the region, including some in his district. The new factory appeared to be "state of the art" and worthy of funding, he said, adding: "It is my hope that the USDA will reach a favorable decision" on the application for a 60 percent federal loan guarantee toward a $19.7 million loan.

—A Kenosha health center's request to use money under Obama's new health care law to help meet health care needs of "thousands of new patients" who lack coverage. Ryan's December 2010 letter to the Department of Health and Human Services, first reported by the Nation magazine and also obtained by the AP, appears at odds with his pledge to repeal "Obamacare."

—Support for a grant for the Historical Society in Milton, Wis., from the National Park Service for $271,000 in order to preserve a Civil War-era home. Ryan supported the plan in 2002, saying historical artifacts inside the former transfer point for slaves "have aged to a point where aggressive preservation and restoration is needed to save them." Meanwhile, he's supported recent cuts to the federal budget that would invariably affect national parks.

View Ryan's correspondence here.

The AP obtained requested documents from nearly every executive branch agency, although many have been slow to provide any relevant files. Some Obama administration agencies declined AP's request to quickly turn over materials even though they involve an election that's just weeks away.

Again Mitt is wrong. The statement that our economy is just fine, is totally incorrect.

Are we on the precipice or on the brink of disaster? I think not.

Once President Barack Obama is re-elected, you can count on American Jobs due to American Energy & the new emerging markets.

It only makes sense that foreign oil does not want American Energy.

On Nov 6, 2012 you will be part responsible of History's American great economic upsurge.

The choice is yours. The pivot of our great nation will be because American's believe in American Energy, being self reliant.

God bless us all.

Who're you talking to? No one gives a rat's arse about any of these comments. And if you think continued pursuit of Obama's totally misguided community-organizer "economics" is putting this country on the right track, you are dead wrong.

Your right. Nov. 6th is a big decision that's why Americans should not waste their vote on someone who has proven to be a failure.

This "American Energy" you speak of, would this be the now bankrupt green energy programs that Pres. Obama poured billions into. In most cases "Green Energy" is know to be very cost inefficient. That's why its near impossible to make a profit from it. In some cases people who invest in solar panels in their home will die before they get a return on their investment. I know we love our environment, but we have bills to pay. Stupid investments will not help anyone.

BTW, before you guys go on your desperate "Romney/ Ryan are liars!!" rampage. Lets look at some real facts, and see who is the true compulsive liar.

If one eats all the cows, goats and chickens, one has no milk and eggs, and no more cows, goats and chickens. Then you starve with a belly full of greed.

Burn the coal, burn the oil, ruin the air and wait for alt energy to become profitable, or, be proactive and survive.

Failed as Governor and failed as a Congressman. Obama wins!

Pres. Obama has failed the entire nation with bad investments, and failed foreign policy.

What happened in Lybia? Oh that was somehow the Republicans fault? Event though after the budget cuts, they still managed to get the men in Tripoli, which they later pulled out against the advice of Lt. Colonel Andrew Woods (google him, you'll learn a lot). BTW the funding for the troops came from DOD not from the "Embassy" funding, so the cuts we're irrelevant, and they happened nearly a year before The State Department (headed by Hillary Clinton) pulled the troops out of Tripoli and Lybia. The Lt. Colonel requested that troops be sent to guard the Ambassador, but the State Department (run by Hillary Clinton) said he had a safe haven to retreat to so he didn't need the protection. This "Safe Haven" is where he ran to, and is where he ultimately perished. But the democrats pulled their usual B.S. Deny, Deny, Deny and find some way to blame the Republicans.

And don't get me stated on the economy, we all know how that turned out.

Americans deserve more than what they have had to bear for the last for years. Pres. Obama must go.

While more recent requests for federal aid are fair game, those from a decade ago have no basis as proof of Ryan being a flip flopper on the issue. As you may or may not recall, 10 years ago the national debt was a fraction of what it is now, and the economy was going full blast, concern for the national debt was virtually nonexistent. It would be like worrying about a flood while standing in a dry creek bed, the debt just wasn't a big issue back then to the vast majority of politicians.

Classic.

Of course Ryan asked for Federal dollars while saying those dollars need to be cut. That is the base of the problem. "If I get the money it is well spent. If someone I don't like gets the money it's a waste". Ron Paul earmarked all kinds of wasteful spending like bike racks and decorative street lights for his district. All the while being the "champion of smaller government". The pork and waste is easily hidden in every bill. That's the problem. Bills are written that contain spending that has nothing to do with the original bill. Stuff like a defense spending bill that also includes $5 million for a pig poop museum in Iowa.

This is really an election for the future of America. A future when everybody has a chance to become more or a future where the 1% take it all. A future when greed and stupidity are the virtues of our government. The religious right have join this un-holy alliance so they can get all of their culture war issues resolved the way they like. The voters have to choose who the believe. Last night's debate was a look at how really Romney/Ryan believe they can win. They will say anything to get people to believe them regardless if it is true or not. That is our question, who do we believe, Ryan stands up and says that he hates the stimulus money, that it is driving us over the cliff, and we will end like Greece, but he doesn't say he applied for the money every chance he got. Which makes him a total HYPOCRITE, but I guess that's okay if he's your guy, and his nick name lyin' Ryan seems appropriate. So to be clear, the Romney/Ryan ticket is perfect in a facts optional universe. I'm not so sure it will go well or work for us with them leading our country in a facts based universe.

Republicans are all about fiscal responsiblilty when trying to get elected.

When they govern, they do the opposite, blow the budget, and dig deeper into the pit of debt. Clinton fixed the Reagan/HWBush mess, but that was miniscule compared to the financial mess left by WBush.

Obama will continue to fix it even with his hands tied by the Republican House. It could be done faster with a Democratic super-majority or at least Republicans willing to work for the Country, instead of just for themselves.

    Devils son

Of course Ryan asked for Federal dollars while saying those dollars need to be cut. That is the base of the problem. "If I get the money it is well spent. If someone I don't like gets the money it's a waste".

Oh it goes a lot deeper than that. This is the new Neo-conservative/Corporatist game plan for the American Dream ... I got mine now I pull the ladder up. That way I don't have to share it with anyone.

News Flash: Paul Ryan is just another politician ... just like all the other people running -- well, maybe not as smart as some that wouldn't have set themselves up like that on national television. Note that Michelle Bachmann is worse: she makes an outrageous fuss about the stimulus program, but was only too happy to request it for her district on several occasions and pose for photos when it was granted. Her family farm has received more than $250K in farm subsidies to let their land lay fallow. I don't think it matters one bit what party they are affiliated with, politicians don't get to be politicians without knowing how to work a system to their advantage.

I don't think I can knock Ryan for trying to help his constituents, but like I said, he's not very bright if he made requests that were a matter of (obvious) public record and then didn't have a rationale for his conflicting positions .... hey, maybe that's why M.T. Suit picked him in the first place.

This is typical of the Romney/ Ryan smoke and mirrors agenda, while they characterize nearly half of Americans as irresponsible government mooches, they themselves stand in line with their hands out.

By the way, Romney himself is one of the 47% he chastised for not paying federal income tax. While Romney has paid around 13% capital gains tax on millions in return on investments, he has not paid any federal income tax since he resigned as CEO of Bain Capital and put his holdings in a blind trust in 1999. That is why Romney refuses to release hard copies of his tax returns, they will reveal he has paid no federal income tax for several years, and was one of the 4000 Americans who received amnesty from the IRS to pay settlement taxes on the $3 million he had stashed in a Swiss bank account.........Electing Romney to the office of president is the same as giving Bush/Cheney a third term......god forbid

So Ryan had his hand out when the stimulus package was passed. That wouldn't be so bad if he never criticized it. I remember that some of the Republican governors refused the stimulus money to try to make Obama look bad so why didn't Ryan if he wasn't a hypocrite?

Ryan, like all other Republicans, doesn't want to pay for social services with his tax dollars so let him pay for the wars, defense spending, and Bush's borrowed money and use my tax dollars for social services. Simple...case closed.

When his true persona comes out with close buddies and the party, he says "30% of Americans are takers"

    Same thing with Romney.

Behind closed doors, he doesnt give a rat's ass about 47% of Americans, but in public, "oh yeah, I care about all 100%"....can you believe these 2 schticks?

Gee-- a Republican saying one thing then doing another!!! This is news?? It's been going on for at least 30 years. They say they want to cut spending, then turn a surplus into a deficit. They say they're for small government then expand government. They say they're for personal freedom they want to spy on people, tell them what kind of birth control to use, what to read, what to watch on TV. Republican and hypocrite are interchangeable terms.

As I watch and listen to Romney, I am reminded of the old Claymation TV character "Gumby", who could be put into any position, because he was made of clay and moldable. I'm not sure what Romney is made of, but it's not good material for anyone who wants to be President of the USA. Just for fun, look up the meaning of "panderer". If Mitt ever gets elected, he'll be Panderer in Chief, instead of "Commander in Chief".

John Doe..."Slate.com" is no more than a tabloid newspaper that puts humor and fiction into its articles. Perhaps you need to learn how to distinguish from what is a credible news source and other reference materials before making a fool of yourself. They taught this in grammar school when I was growing up. It was stressed in high school and if you are like me, you went on for a few college degrees where being able to distinguish credible resources was expected.

Why does NBC put a positive spin on everything for Democrats?

Biden looked like an angry foolish old man last night. Not bringing the heat. He laughed at everything Ryan said. Now that is real mature and not what we are looking for in a VP.

Biden didn't spank the liar enough. He should have laid it on a little thicker. He seemed to have tried to get every available pork there was for his district then turned around and cut them out of his budget. It is so Republican to use government programs to succeed, and then lock the door on others as soon as they are successful.

      REPUBLICANS ARE HYPOCRITES!!!

The reality is, Republicans are hypocrites! They complain about various forms of "corporate welfare" when the democrats spend, but have nothing whatsoever to say when Republicans dole out billions in corporate welfare to Halliburton, defense contractors, prescription drug companies, etc. It is appropriate to call Ryan, a supposed deficit/budget "hawk," on all of the perks, freebies, and welfare he has attempted to get for his own constituents. If anyone thinks the election of Romney/Ryan will reduce the "corporate welfare" out there, you are a MORON. It will simply be re-routed to THEIR favorites. Ryan, after all, supported the unfunded Medicare prescription drug program, two unpaid-for-wars, and W's stimulus packages. He isn't a hawk at all when it's Republicans wanting to waste money.

Romney too was for stimulus before he was against it.

Romney in 2008: Stimulus, not spending cuts, is the way to boost the economy
      By

I’ve been working my way through Michael Grunwald’s excellent book on Obama’s stimulus, “The New New Deal,” and here’s another choice nugget: In 2008, Mitt Romney attacked spending cuts as the wrong way to boost the economy, and made the Keynesian argument that stimulus in the form of tax cuts was the better way to do it, even if it resulted in a short term hit to the deficit.

Needless to say, this is at odds with the argument he is making today, which is that the best way to speed the recovery is to cut spending. And it again raises a question: Is Mitt Romney a closet Keynesian?

In 2008, Romney was running for president, and during a debate in January of that year, John McCain was asked what short term government fix he’d support, given that the economy looked like it was headed for a downturn. McCain said: “the first thing we need to do is stop the out-of- control spending.”

Romney, seeking to distinguish himself from McCain, rolled out his own $250 billion stimulus plan in an interview with John Harwood later that month, a plan that mostly consisted of tax cuts, some of which were targeted at low and moderate incomes. He explicitly criticized McCain’s claim that cutting spending would help the economy, claiming: “That’s not stimulative.”

When Harwood followed up by asking him whether his own stimulus plan would boost the deficit, Romney replied: “If we go into recession, the cost to our balanced budget is going to be far more severe than the cost of this program.” So it’s okay to allow the deficit to increase in the short term to help the economy?

To be sure, Romney defended his stimulus plan at the time by noting it contained no additional federal spending. But his criticism of McCain’s spending cuts, his own stimulus plan, and his justification for it were pure Keynesianism, said Jared Bernstein, a former White House adviser.

“That’s an absolutely cogent, Keynesian idea, about the impact of spending cuts on jobs in a down economy,” Bernstein told me. “And it would be great if Governor Romney would remember his former view on that.”

The broader context here is that before Obama was president, none of this stuff was really controversial. Bush passed a stimulus in 2008; Romney’s proposed stimulus was far bigger than that of the former president. Indeed, as Jonathan Cohn has written, even Paul Ryan used to agree that Keynesian fiscal policy during bad economies is not only a good idea, but should err in the direction of making it bigger.

Not long ago, Romney accidentally revealed his closet Keynesianism when he said that sharply cutting the budget during his first year would harm the economy. This was widely treated as a momentary lapse on his part, but we now see he’s said something very similar before. And it’s directly at odds with the central case about spending and deficits the GOP has made against Obama for years now.

Romney is playing the odds. The more positions he espouses on the various issues, the higher likelihood that someone will agree with one of them. It's really quite simple. If I have 5 different positions on taxes, and my opponent has just one, I have a better chance of appealing to a larger number of voters.

Here we go again on this thread. You must be desperate trying so hard to bend some minds your way Mr. Doe, but we are getting tired of seeing this same smear campaign. It will not work. Try something else so we will not be having to correct you again on your wrongheaded notion of what IS a big deal and what is snobbish trivia.

John Doe, nice try regarding that link, but it just shows how desperate you are to resort to the younger Biden in 1988. Fair enough - we can always go back to Tricky Dicky's silly two finger salutes and Viet Nam. We all know who is who and study their speeches, are impressed by them and learn from their experiences. Many of our philosophical ideas are shared and we have read the same authors. We study history and many people who have similar beliefs, ideas and solutions. Failing to quote someone a few times in the heat of a speech or debate is nothing compared to selling a nation of gullible uninformed and fearful Americans misinformation that takes them into a war feud which costs thousands of lives, destroying an economic surplus and making mistakes that have a lasting and horrible financial impact on millions of citizens and their families.

Vice President Biden IS the big boy in charge and has been to THE front lines, at THE committees, at THE meetings, on THE schedule and conferencing with THE other world leaders THAT RYAN IS TRYING TO TELL HIM ABOUT!!! What a hoot! Why would he not be laughing? It was embarrassing to watch a little pretender try to lecture the man in charge about his business in this case! Of course, Vice President Biden was gracious about having to correct Ryan on so many outside guesses while asserting his real expertise on the topics and providing facts, facts that revealed how Ryan's attempted expert lectures were wrong, facts that showed that Ryan did not have any real answers, facts that revealed Ryan's own hypocrisy on the stimulus moneys, facts that reversed Ryan's attempts to point fingers of blame at the Obama administration for the lack of funding for sufficient security troops at many embassies worldwide due to, OOOPS!!!, REPUBLICAN majority decisions in Congress, and so much more. Oh, and come to think of it, none of that - NONE of it!!! was lifted by the Vice President IN 2012 from anyone else. However, we are now left wondering where on earth young Ryan has been getting his wrong-headed ideas from and we are horrified, now that we can see where implementation of those ideas would lead our military, were he to actually be elected to be the vice president of any country!!! Are you are too biased to see that young Ryan just revealed to all of us tonight how unprepared he is to hold such a post? Anything Biden has done pales in comparison to the damage Ryan could do, now that we know from his own words...where he is at. Biden won this debate, handed young Ryan some real facts and a hanky, and sent him back home to his Mommy, who by the way from the news we hear recently, is currently enjoying the benefits of Medicare in her senior years. Anyone would be chuckling and saying "I dont know what you are talking about", at all of this fictitious jibberish coming from a young, less experienced and less informed candidate.

Romney's emotional story remembered very differently by friend of fallen SEAL

On the stump in Iowa Tuesday, Mitt Romney got emotional when he revealed that he met former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty at a holiday party some years ago. Doherty is one of the four Americans who were killed during the September 11th attack on the American consulate in Benghazi. But Glen Doherty's good friend Elf Ellefsen said that Doherty recalled Romney as "robotic," and the meeting went much differently from what Romney retold in Iowa.

On the stump in Iowa, Mitt Romney revealed that he met former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty at a holiday party some years ago. Doherty's friend, Elf Ellefsen, says Doherty wouldn't want Mitt using him for the campaign.

      By Libby Denkmann

On the stump in Iowa Tuesday, Mitt Romney revealed that he met former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty at a holiday party some years ago. Doherty is one of four Americans killed during the September 11th attack on the American consulate in Benghazi.

Romney's story started out lighthearted, as he recounted how he and Ann mistook a holiday gathering across the street for their neighborhood party, and he ended up talking to Doherty. "He skied in some of the places I had. We had a lot of things in common," Romney said of Doherty. Both men are from Massachusetts.

"He told me that he keeps going back to the Middle East. He cares very deeply about the people there. He served in the military there, went back from time to time to offer security services and so forth to people there. You can imagine how I felt when I found out that he was one of the two former Navy SEALS killed in Benghazi on September 11th."

Romney was visibly emotional during the story, and the video of the speech was repeated throughout the day on network and cable news.

But one of Glen Doherty's best friends remembered Doherty's impression of this meeting much differently.

Elf Ellefsen met Glen Doherty skiing in Utah when he was 19, and the two men remained friends for more than 20 years.

"A guy living life wise beyond his years. Always trying to be progressive as well as do the right thing. Always challenging himself to his greatest ability," Ellefsen remembered.

He last saw Doherty a week before the final mission to Libya. "I stayed in his house (in California), we paddled out in the ocean together, spent some good quality time."

Ellefsen said Doherty recalled meeting Mitt Romney years ago, but the account was much different from what the Presidential candidate retold in Iowa.

According to Ellefsen, Romney introduced himself to Doherty four separate times during the gathering.

"He said it was very comical," Ellefsen said, "Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image. He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line. Glen believed it to be very insincere and stale."

Ellefsen said Doherty remembered Romney as robotic.

"He said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen's face."

Ellefsen described Glen Doherty as a humble, non-political guy, and said it was ironic for him to be used during a presidential campaign.

"Whether it be Republican, Democrat, Green Party, Libertarian, it doesn't make a difference. Because this guy is using our great friend, our humble, and honorable great friend...who is truly larger than life...He has become part of the soapbox routine for politics in a presidential race."

Ellefsen said he understands why people would want to link themselves with Doherty. "Of all people to tie yourself to for advancement in life, it's not surprising that Romney or anybody else would want to tie themselves to Glen Doherty. Because he was incredible. And I can honestly say beyond a shadow of a doubt, he was the greatest person I have ever met in my life."

I asked Ellefsen what he thought of his friend's story being used on the political stump:

      "

Honestly it does make me sick. Glen would definitely not approve of it. He probably wouldn't do much about it. He probably wouldn't say a whole lot about it. I think Glen would feel, more than anything, almost embarrassed for Romney. I think he would feel pity for him."

      Editor's note:
While it's unclear just what political, if any, motivations Ellefsen has, it is clear on his Facebook page that he's upset about the U.S. government's role in security overseas.

Ellefsen isn't the only one perturbed by Romney's speech. According to WHDH-TV in Boston, Doherty's mother Barbara says Romney is using her son's death for his political agenda.

BOSTON (WHDH) -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has agreed to stop sharing a story about his encounter with Winchester Navy SEAL Glen Doherty who was killed in the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya after Doherty's mother said she was upset Romney was using the story for his political agenda.

Glen Doherty was one of four Americans killed in the September 11 attack on the U.S. consulate.
"I met some remarkable people, one of whom was a former navy seal. I just learned a few days ago that he was one of the two former navy seals killed in Benghazi. It broke my heart," Romney said to a crowd on the campaign trail.

Romney met Doherty at a Christmas party.

During a radio show interview, Doherty's friend recounted a different version of Romney's meeting with Doherty.

"He actually approached him, using this private gathering as basically a political venture to further his image. And Glen just believed it to be very insincere and stale," said Elf Ellefsen, Doherty's friend.

"I don't trust Romney. He shouldn't make my son's death part of his political agenda. It's wrong to use these brave young men, who wanted freedom for all, to degrade Obama," said Barbara Doherty, Glen's mother.

Glen Doherty, Mitt Romney comments: Mother of former SEAL asks Romney to stop talking about her son
      Posted: 10/11/2012

      By: STEVE PEOPLES, Associated Press
SIDNEY, Ohio (AP) — The mother of a former Navy SEAL killed in Libya has called on Mitt Romney to stop talking about her son during his political campaign.

A spokesman for the Republican presidential candidate says Romney will respect her wishes.

Romney has been telling voters of sharing a Christmas dinner with the former SEAL, Glen Doherty, two or three years ago. Doherty was among four Americans killed in the attacks in Benghazi.

Romney has been trying to show a more personal side in recent days. He's also been criticizing President Barack Obama's over the attack in Libya.

On Wednesday, Doherty's mother, Barbara Doherty, told Boston television station WHDH that she doesn't trust Romney and called on Romney to stop making her son's death, in her words, "part of his political agenda."

Two-Faced Mitt & Lyin Ryan team continue to show their true worth or lack of! Advocating cuts while reaching in deep for the same funds shamelessly shows how sick these people are. While I do not condone abortion, no one has the right to impose it on others and again Ryan takes pride in posing with a dead deer and says is FOR LIFE! To continue significant tax cuts for the rich and simply bleed the poor while not admitting that the 'loopholes' they are going to eliminate are home mortgage tax deductions - the last shelter any middle class family has left is a cruel joke.

Simply put the Republican party caters only to rich, corps, cartels, banks and such and it is clearly evident from the significant polarization of funds flow during this cycle.

That is so typical of GOP members of both houses of Congress. Del Latta and his son (5th District OH) were/are notorious for doing this. They vote against every funding bill that came/comes to the floor of the House, then file for every dollar they can get for their district and brag about how they got all of that money. Then they have the audacity to use their FREE postage benefit as a member of the House to mail out their "newsletter" campaign material just weeks before their next election. NO member of Congress should be able to use that FREE postage right within any campaign period (minimum six months prior to the primary). Besides they are part of the USPS financial problems. If they want the USPS to be profitable, they should be forced to give up that FREE postage right.

Of course, if you want real electoral/campaign finance reform, you need to get involved in the Popular Amendment Movement before the 2014/16 elections and help get the two proposed constitutional amendments posted at www.faircampaignreform.us passed. End the idiocy of our campaigns/elections and help pass these amendments.

Petition for US Constitutional Amendment For Election Reform

We, the undersigned US citizens, duly registered voters in our respective states/territories, do hereby petition for our state to approve the following amendment to the United States Constitution by the method noted below.

      Election Reform:
      1. Abolish the Electoral College (Repeal Amendment 12)
      2. ONE NATIONAL primary date to be held on the Tuesday eight (8) weeks prior to the General Election day for Congressional offices and for the President. Candidate petitions must be filed with the local/state elections boards 60 days prior to the Primary Election date. Federal election petitions shall be uniform in every state and shall include a “contract with the voters” that spells out clearly what that candidate stands for on all issues that they may have to address in elected office. They shall be held accountable in court for breach of that contract if elected and any/all terms are not met.
      3. NO campaigning allowed for any elective federal office more than 60 days prior to the National Primary Date.
      4. NO campaign contribution shall be donated to any candidate of more than $200 from an individual or $500 maximum from a family (spouses/children living in the same household.) No donations shall be made to a candidate more than sixty days prior to the primary date. No candidate shall contribute from their own funds more than 60% of the total donations from other private individuals.
      5. NO campaign contribution from any PAC, corporation, union, non-profit organization, special interest group, etc. shall be allowed for any elected federal office.
      6. NO third party campaigning (separate PAC ads, corporate ads, etc.) for/against any candidate shall be allowed at any time during or before the election season.
      7. NO party conventions shall be held to select the presidential candidates. The selection must be done at the ballot box in the primary election.
      8. The One Man/One Vote Supreme Court ruling shall be enforced by this Amendment, namely that NO federal candidate selection shall be by any means other than the ballot box on Primary/General Election Dates.
      9. National Party Organizations shall NOT raise money for or donate to specific candidates of their party prior to the dates outlined above.
      10. PAC’s shall NOT be granted tax-exempt status by the IRS, and any non-profit organization who uses their funding for political purposes shall lose their tax-exempt status.
      11. All lobbyists shall be outlawed from influencing Congress at all times.

This amendment shall be approved ONLY by State Constitutional Conventions to be called within 90 days of this petition being submmitted to a state’s Secretary of State. A minimum of 25% of the registered voters in each state shall be required to further this petition to the respective Secretary of State.

Some things in your plan are good, others, not so much.

The electoral college has more value today than ever. We can not allow a few high population, city oriented areas of our country to be pandered too, gaining the votes needed to control the rest.

As long as businesses & yes corporations are going to be taxed & regulated by government, they should be able to state their opinions. If consumers don't like the message they can always stop buying. Now a union we are "required" to have, with no options to switch too, is some thing else all together.

As Mr. Ryan said last night, "when you can't run on your record, you have to run on fear against your opponent" and that's actually the one case where Ryans and Romney's actions do match their words.

jdbird, your statement regarding the "right" of corporations to have "free speech" is flawed in it's premise. If you (or anyone) has taken the time to read the writings of the Founders including the Federalist Papers, the Declaration of Independence, personal letters, etc. it is quite clear that they believed that the "people" had "natural rights" that issued from their very being. Corporations are not "natural beings" and therefore inherently lacking the natural rights of real people.

While the electoral college still has some validity as an establishment of our guaranteed Republican form of government (as stated in the Constitution) and a bastion against "mob rule" (the Founders disliked "true" Democracy for this reason), it is somewhat anachronistic in that the time in which it was enacted was a time of very slow dissemination of information - so it was entirely possible that many citizens might not be as well informed in some areas further from the seat of government. This is not the case today, however, as information travels at the speed of light and is readily available for any who choose to seek it. In practice, it serves little purpose today, as the Senate still provides necessary protections for the minority against the majority that some will argue.

      To #7, 8 and 9,

Firstly, America is in debt to the tune of $16 Trillion. We have spent ourselves into oblivion. Our leaders are talking about cutting spending because they have no choice; it's certainly not a popular thing to do. Make no mistake, we all (i.e. every last one of us) will pay for that debt or our children will have to pay for it, one way or another. It won't matter how much you make or how much you have or where you live, things are going to get tough.

Secondly, Congressman Ryan wants to reduce spending but had requested federal money for the people of Wisconsin. Some people say that is hypocritical. Really? If the Obama Administration is spending the American citizens' money, shouldn't every American benefit from it... even if they happen to live in Wisconsin's 1st District?

      Mark,

There would be absolutely no ambiguity or hypocrisy if Mitt and Paul would just release their actual plan and show us some math. Every speech they give they say how they're going to do keep giving us everything we like while reducing the deficit...well 2+2 does not = 0. I can tell you that I'm going to give everyone in the country a billion dollars and at the same time its free...but that just doesn't make sense. Besides talking points, they really have no plan that the American people can hold onto.

      Steveo,

Thanks for your reply. I agree they've not given many specifics.

Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan have said on more than one occasion that they have a framework, a starting point, but no specifics yet because they want to sit down with Republicans and Democrats to work out the specifics. They don't want to exclude the Democrats and try to shove something down our throats.

In my opinion, they don't want to give specifics because they will not win the election if they do. They will need to make some huge tough cuts to keep all that they want, while cutting taxes and increasing military spending. To do all of these things and still cut into the deficit, they would have to axe a lot of programs that help a lot of people, and that would never get them elected!

Maybe you recall the last time they sat down for the super summit and now we are facing a fiscal cliff simply because the Republicans wanted it "my way or the highway"? Or how about the day after the election when the entire Republican party said their goal would be to make Obama a one term president? Or when the entire Republican party has signed a pledge to Grover Norquist that the will never raise taxes for ANY reason? Ya know, maybe you're right, since they have been so sincere for the last 3 years, maybe they could have a beer together and iron out their differences! REALLY?

If and when you get money from the State, then maybe it's just YOUR money.

If and when you get money from the Federal Government, meaning when Paul Ryan asked Vice President Joe Biden for money, he was asking to draw from ALL OF OUR MONEY and NOT just from Wisconsin State money. That means, California money, Oregon money, Florida money, etc.

So Ryan wants to draw from all of our money when he should be drawing ONLY from Wisconsin State money, that is, if you ask anybody from any of the other 49 States that Paul Ryan is trying to take money from.

As much as Joe Biden may offend the more "delicate" sensibilities of those among the human race, one fact is undeniable: Joe spoke from his heart, Ryan spoke from an Ayan Rand novella edited and scripted by the Republican Party. Ryan's stance on Roe v Wade is a true insight into this man's agenda, his breath taking ignorance of the actual military operation in Afghanistan and the Syrian conflict made me and mine very afraid of Romney's ability to draw the United States back into another Middle Eastern War. Romney/Ryan very bad for Women's Health and the security of the United States. Ryan is simply a supreme hypocrite.

Who is worse, someone who killed 3000+ in a forewarned attack, or one who spent the lives of my brothers and sisters in an unnecesary war over a lie? This doesn't count the 10's of thousands of innocent Iraquis that died in the crossfire.

Also, this war was unfunded, not on budget durin the previous CIC's administration.

Look up "Double Santa" and see how the GOP is very very good ad debt blame shifting.

Myth Robme & Lyin' Ryan: Hypocrites and liars who will say and do anything/use anyone & anything to get elected - despicable! they don't care about us - 47% or 99%!

If you vote for R & R, which ones will you get? "severely conservative" or "moderate for the moment"- you just don't have any way to know. chances are, they will do nothing but Robin-Hood-in-reverse - take even more from the lower income folks to feed the insatiable greed of the 1% for more more more. They will drag us into more unwinnable ME wars.

            Just. Say. No.

The AP article is balogna. I can be opposed to a policy or government program, but still utilize its resources until the policy or program is changed. Expecially since my tax dollars are still "taken" to fund the program. I watch PBS. I do not want my tax dollars funding it. In protest, I send them no money. But, I watch their commercials (Chuck E. Cheese, Ford Motors, etc.) and appreciate they receive private funding. And, please, just go to PBSKIDS.org and see how many of those programs are marketing items in every major retail outlet. They certainly don't need my money. But, I watch them anyway. So, Congressman Ryan should continue to try and get his constituent's piece of the pie so long as their tax dollars are used to make the pie.

              Reply#17 - Fri Oct 12, 2012 1:38 PM EDT

Any smart person would do the same. If the Federal money wasn't available, then Ryan would need to find another solution for his constituents. It would actually be a bad thing if Ryan didn't try to get as much money as he could, once it was decided it was happening anyway.

This article is foolish intended for foolish people.

You don't seem to understand the point proud_hispanic. Ryan is the supreme hypocrite for asking for the money he himself voted against. It also says something about his sense of Randian 'individualism.' He has none. Yet another one of his many contradicting beliefs. He asks for and accepts money he doesn't think anyone should get, not to mention getting federal aid through out his life. Sounds like a true individualist to me, doesn't it?

To be honest, you seem to be quite a fool yourself. It's called critical thinking, try it out sometime.

Using your "crital thinking" then all democrats should not use the tax codes just because they are law. They should all pay in taxes what they think is fair - and I am speaking of Democrats in the 1%.

I did not call you a fool secondbrother - you did that yourself.

Sounds like Congressman Ryan was for it...before he was against it! He was exposed again last night by VP Biden for the flip flopper that he and Gov Romney are. And Congressman Ryan; please explain the math of your policy? There are those out there that are actually proficient enough to see and understand your assault on and disdain for the middle class!

But Ryan's constituents benefited from stimulus spending and other government-assistance programs, according to AP's review. Ryan once told federal regulators that cutting a stimulus grant for a town in his district at the 11th hour would be "economically devastating."

But I am proficient at math! So lets see the Romney/Ryan plan line by line? Those were Ryans exact words; the math would take too long to explain. Fact is they are flat out liars & will irreparably damage and put a final nail into the middle class coffin.

I can read some pretty heavy math equations and understand them. Perhaps it only takes too long to explain to someone who has no ability to add or subtract. A simple balance sheet showing the "+" and"-" coulumns is all we want to see. Shouldn't take to long to do that on a spreadsheet.

Can you explain how the math for Obamacare is working? How is it that the $716B they are taking from Medicare is going to be spent twice?

The $716 billion that Obamacare cuts from Medicare gets spent on expanding Medicaid and subsidizing exchanges. It is gone. Not a dollar of it is left to spend at any point in the future on Medicare.

It's called being a hypocrite, plain and simple. Truth be told many Republicans in congress asked for stimulus money and ran home to ribbon cutting ceremonies as a result of projects from that same stimulus. They then ran back to congress (like disingenuous snakes) and spoke out against that same stimulus bill. Say what you want about republicans..they truly are an amazing group of folk.

The stimulus, once passed was free game and the congressman did what was best for his constituents.

Many years ago in Economy 101 I learned that the difference between the Right and Left was that one offered you government help to get you from day to day while the other offered you an environment where if you worked hard and were diligent you could better yourself. It is human nature to want to take the help and scary to do the latter.

Republicans would rather not send money to DC in the first place. Failing to prevent that, the next best thing is to bring as much of it back with as few strings as possible.

So, as a darling of the Tea Party and who talks about the things that independents want (real fiscal responsibility), it is disheartening to find out that Mr. Ryan is nothing more than a "me first" politician. He "wants" for his people but rails against others getting what they want form the government. I was not really surprised to find this out about Mr. Ryan but the extent of his hypocrisy is too much for me.

So you're trying to say Ryan is a hypocrite? What your trying to say is that Ryan thinks it's okay for him, just like all of his Republican cronies, to take from American taxpayers to give to whomever they want, to get whatever they want, but not good for other American taxpayers (read that the Middle Class) for the right reasons?

I think VP Biden caught Mr. Ryan with his pants down when he tried to sneak that comment in and spanked him pretty good.

It's just like when Mr. Ryan tried to say his "Congress" was passing legislature when the President couldn't and VP Biden started laughing and said something about them having a 7% or 8% approval rating.

Lie after lie, cheat after cheat, it didn't matter what Ryan did, VP Biden called him on it and he had no answer other than to try to change the subject. We had 8 years with Republicans in the White House that put us in the mess in the first place, and now 2 years of Republicans trying their darnedest to keep us in this mess now so they can get back into power.

Why in the world would anyone in their right mind allow our ENTIRE Country to be held hostage by people who want to give huge tax breaks to less than 1% of ALL Americans? That's INSANE. They're acting in a bi-partisan manner? How is representing 1% of the country over 99% of the country bi-partisan by hold us totally hostage like this and NEVER even ATTEMPTING to work with Democrats. Just look at the facts. No spin, just facts.

Not only does the President need to be reelected, every Republican needs to be thrown out of Congress so we can get out of this log jam. They're obviously blocking all attempts to help the middle class and if we don't elect Democrats to Congress as well, it's more of the same. Screw them all to the wall.

Obama flew into Columbus Ohio to congratulate the "new" police hires who would be trained under the stimulus.

Problem is, the amount of money the police cadets got was $200k, it costs a minimum of $750 per hour for Air Force One. Nothing but running for the next election on our money. The city could have hired 8 times the number if Obama had just phoned it in.
