Polls matter...but NOT Pew. Their sample is incredibly erratic and unreliable. And BTW, the previous Pew sample did not "slightly" oversample Democrats (as stated in this story)...it was just as massive an oversample but in the opposite direction. The "enthusiasm" and willingness to respond may fluctuate but it is up to the pollster to correct for it.

This just proves that Obama's miraculous unemployment drop wasn't fooling anybody.......... Too many people have exhausted their benefits and have not found employment. No matter what Obama does, you can't change the fact that the economy is the biggest thing on people's minds right now.

We do not want a President who will continue to "promise" and not provide any change. At worst, we could end up with another President like Obama. At best, we could finally dig ourselves out of this hole that the present administration has put us in.

Incorrect. They do give the most income taxes but I would still argue that even there they have quite the nice deal. They pay 38% of all income taxes but they own more than 42% of the wealth. When you take it into account county, city, state, and federal taxes the middle class/poor actually pay around 70% of all taxes. So the rich actually do not pay more even though they have much more than any other group to pay.

this election will not be a landslide for either candidate. I do beleive obama lost a lot of credibility with his performance at the debate and his handling of the ambassador being killed. he didn't act decisivly in the matter and actually tried to dispell it as not a terrorist attack even though they had many written and verbal warnings from several sorces weeks before that attack.

A closer look at the Pew poll that NBC is using to try to convince Republican voters to ante-up some more donations shows that it is unscientific.

For one, the previous Pew poll of a week ago sampled almost 3000 voters, and the current poll only 1200.

For two, the new poll called 60% landlines and 40% cell phones. Now here is the kicker: When they called a landline, they asked to speak to the youngest adult present.

So basically this new Pew poll is swayed by the fact that it is at least somewhat a poll of younger voters. It is also swayed because they can't call people without telephones, or even people who don't answer their phone either.

The small sampling size also runs a much greater risk of inaccuracy too.

Gallup on the other hand, shows a 49%-46% Obama advantage in its most-recent poll released today, and their poll is entirely random, rather than weighted toward the youngest adult voter home out of 60% of the total respondents.

I'm afraid the science of polling a few weeks before the election is a lot like the science of offering odds on what football team is going to win when the score is 17-16 halfway through the 2nd quarter, when all that really matters is who wins when the clock expires.

Right now according to Gallup the President is ahead by 3%, and according to the junk weighted "science" out of Pew, Romney is ahead by a small margin too. Both polls have a 3.3% rate of error possible, but when the entire electorate is over 200 million people, a sample of 1200 is hardly large-enough to draw accurate scientific conclusions from either, especially when it is a telephone poll.

Why don't we just wait for the other two debates before trying to throw the race one way or the other in the news media, which in the case of NBC, I feel is increasingly biased toward Romney.

What matters is where you finish and second place is last.

I'm glad the polls, whether this poll is accurate or not, show the race moving in favor of Mr. Romney. I don't see much in your post that truly defends Mr. Obama. He is extremely weak on foreign policy, Iran included, and his mistakes in this area are likely going to cause far more deaths than you hope he avoids by appeasing Iran. And, yes, sanctions are an appeasement of Iran. More on that if you want.

I truly hope you are right that if Mr. Romney wins that Medicare and SS, Roe too, end. Too bad it won't happen this way. Medicare will continue to be viewed as a well run program providing needed benefits when in reality it has been, along with Medicaid, a major driver in massive health care cost increases. For DECADES. SS is worse in some ways as it has at its heart a racist outcome I don't think any of those who wrote or passed it intended. Add to that the criminal ROI it provides, and the fact that SS surpluses have for decades helped to fund a government that was operating beyond its means, and I think you have a situation ripe for reform.

Most voters still want their free stuff, so please don't despair. Regardless of who wins there will be plenty of free stuff still being shoveled to voters but paid for with money stolen from those voters' heirs. It's hard to see how we could be a more immoral American generation.

It's a bad law, but it would take a constitutional amendment (which the president doesn't have a hand in but for his bully pulpit) or a favorable ruling by the USSC to reverse the holding in Roe. These laws require current photo IDs, but do NOT require proof of citizenship, and most don't even require proof of residency. I just re-registered in my state and all they asked for as a second ID was a bank card. Photo IDs are only protection for what is called "voter impersonation," which rarely if ever occurs. Photo IDs are just another inconvenience and expense imposed on voters. If folks are serious about "legitimate" or "secure" voting, voter registration cards that require proof of citizenship would make more sense.

This is the problem with Romney supporters as well. They fell for his theatrics in the last debate.

All fine. But why all of a sudden? The courts in many of these states are right, you can have these "new" voter ID laws, but not in this election. You have not given the electorate enough time to comply and the state cannot handle the extra load issuing all of them in time. In the state of Ohio, and I wouldn't doubt other states, the information the state had put up for registering and the "law" was not changed and was telling people the opposite of what the courts ruled. I live in Michigan. We have voter ID law too, but nothing new. You should..SHOULD show a picture ID but if you don't have one or haven't changed your address in a recent move yet or name in the case of a newly married woman you can still vote. Just show proof of residency..a utility bill, a rent receipt. Not a big deal. The big deal is what is it all of a sudden with nearly non-existent voter fraud must you change these laws so close to an election?

The one poll that should matter and is completely accurate is the 2008 election. 53.4% of voters said they were not happy with the Republican message. Over 50% of voters asked for hope and change. I'm going to say a few things. First, I think that both candidates care about their country, but the way they go about trying to help is different. Let's see where they mean the same. Whatever the outcome of the election, we have to bring both sides together when the smoke clears. Anger hasn't helped us; it has only hurt us.

Now, as to what we see in this poll, there is no denying that President Obama looked very weak last week. I was listening on the radio and he sounded like a man who didn't know what the heck he was doing. Mr. Romney, in contrast, sounded very sure of himself. And the analysis of both candidates indicates they both stretched the truth.

They had a perfect example as a good portion of the weapons used during our war for independence were privately owned weapons. The only "poll" that matters is November 6th. I would guess Romney was wanting to be within 3% to 5% prior to the first debate and did that. Then hoped to have a good first debate which he did that. However, Obama is now clearly on the defensive which is where we want him to be. I couldn't have hoped for a better scenario prior to the VP debate and the next two presidential debate. We are the only ones that print money. Any time we print money the rich people cry bloody murder since that devalues the money you already have. But what forced the government to run out of money in the first place? Why was the amount of money that the government printed the first year it printed money not enough? Could it be that people paid themselves to much of a percentage versus their workers, and managed to save some money pulling it OUT of the system maybe? Then to put it back into the system you morons expect interest from it instead of just using it as a buffer. How is the government NOT FORCED to eventually print out money AND WHY IS THERE NOT A F***ING PROBLEM WITH THAT? Where does that EXTRA money come from since there is only ONE source? According to math unless you want to print more money until the end of time then savings and investments need to LOSE in value over time just like food does. Therefore, if you make more that forces someone else to make less, simple relativity.

How can you make 200k a year without others in a system all by yourself? Where did that 200k come from? Did it just magically appear out of thin air since God knew that you were working hard? Could we even have printed money without a government? What would you trade or barter then, and what effect would that have on the speed of transactions? Could you do internet sales or would there even be an internet? How would you get more resources to produce whatever product or services you are offering? Who is going to buy those products and services? Who ensures that when you trade something with others that they honor the agreement? Would you be able to have a stock market without governments? Who is going to protect you from theft, people stealing from you company, or just killing you for all your stuff? The government provides so much crap that lets you make money that many many people take for granted. Those same people take their workers for granted too, just look at the pay ratio difference. They take this planet and its resources for granted too. The only thing they understand though is work work work money money money (while work is important how about some moderation instead of mindless addiction). WHEN ARE THE ONES THAT CREATED THE F***ING MONEY IN THE FIRST PLACE. How can we be victims/slaves to the system we created and maintain?

When I say that if people make 1000 to 1 ratios that only 0.1% of the population can make that for any length of time or average that is RELATIVITY. When people make 100 to 1 ratios then only 1% can make that amount and if the ratio was 10 to 1 then 10% of the population can make that amount on average. How can your system or ideology only provide 0.1% of the population a chance to win, then try to talk to me about opportunity and how capitalism is better then socialism...?

To maybe put it into words you can understand... You know how you all cry about libtards and how we cannot understand the debt and how it is going up. Why is it that you agree with me on math and how a system works in that case, but not when it comes to capitalism in general? The debt we all agree is based on an absolute system or one that is based off the number zero. Zero is the starting or reference point in the system. If we add money to it then the debt goes down closer to zero and if we spend money then the debt goes higher away from zero.

What happens when we print money? If not for the Federal Reserve not much actually. It is only due to the interest that we have to pay on the new money that causes any problems or issues. How can you continue then year after year to make more and more money? Where is that money coming from? Some magic source in the sky? That or can we be grown ups, and admit the government is forced to print out more. Therefore, the ideology you promote forces the government to print out new money adding to the debt, and forces us to pay the interest on it. You are creating the very problems you are crying about. Each time you "grow" the economy where does the extra money come from again and what effect does it have on our debt?

Can you add a product without printing money and growing the economy? Yes we can. What effect would that have? Why would that not make a dollar buy more not less? Simple math... What is so bad about the idea of a dollar buying more and not less?

The problem is people OBSESS over numbers. Bigger number is better, me likeey more, I R can have... Why can you not be happy with what you have? Why was more not enough to make you happy last time? What are you going to spend that money on or use it for? What purpose it is for and why is it SO F***ING IMPORTANT that it is worth killing people over? I used to be a conservative, but when the numbers to not add up I cannot sit here and lie to people. I believe that people need to be able to take care of themselves, but we need the government for the things we cannot do. Like forcing the small group of people that HAVE ALREADY WON the money game to play another game. If you are great as you think you are, should you not win again, or are you afraid that you will lose this time? Why are you afraid to play another game?

Since the debates between the Republicans Romney has been saying he want's to make the Bush tax cuts permanent and add an additional 20% tax cut for everyone. He wants to eliminate the inheritance tax and the alternative minimum tax. Also talked about reducing the percent of taxes on capital gains, but that seems to wax and wane. (That's a pretty good deal for his millionaire and billionaire donors) Oops, left out the tax cut for corporations he wants too. And, he wants to increast defense spending to an amount that is larger than we spent on the Korean War, or the Viet Nam War, or the cold war; and much more than the defense department has asked for. (Bush classified the Afghanistan and Iraq wars as emergencies so they don't show up in the defense fund data).

Ah but Wednesday he said no he wasn't really cutting taxes. He was going to close a lot of loop holes so he and his wealth buddies won't really get a tax cut, the middle class would enjoy a tax cut and it would all be revenue neutral. Oh my, his donors aren't going to like that at all! Do you really buy that?

If there is one thing we have observed from the Republican record in the government the past 11+ years, and the Republicans in the their recent debates. The one thing they ALWAYS want is tax cuts for the rich. The budget plans proposed by Gingrich, Cain and Perry all increased taxes on the lower incomes. Several Republican voices in congress have echoed this sentiment that the rest of us are not doing our share.

Now, Romney refuses to provide details of how he is going to do this. Says he has to work this out with the congress. So really think about this! Romney owes too much to his donors to make them unhappy, so do the Republicans in the House and Senate. The weathy have well paid lobbiests to cry on their behalf, we don't The ideal of all Republicans is to send more wealth to the top and let them keep it. It's the Ayn Rand philosophy! Think about the Paul Ryan budgets with huge tax cuts for the rich (under the second one it is estimated that Romney's tax rate would be less than 1%) and the large majority of votes by the Republicans in the House supporting them (I think it was all of them the first time and something like 4 did not support it the second time).

Either it is the middle class and poor who will have the burden of loop holes closed or the deficit will increase, possibly both.

The Republicans only worry about the deficit when we have a Democratic president (Ryan voted for every deficit increasing thing Bush asked for without a single objection) so I am not sure which way it is going to go.

I fully expected a big surge for Romney after his stellar debate performance. The guy sounded like Santa Claus! 12 million new jobs (how?), $5 trillion dollar tax cut just by closing loopholes & limiting deductions (which ones?) and no cuts to defense spending and no increase in deficits!

He sounded like the kid who won my 6th grade class president election by promising "free candy for everyone!" He's a smart politician, who knows that the way you win an election is precisely by promising free candy for everyone!

Ahhhh yes, Romney Care. Do you know how he accomplished that? He got G.W. Bush to give Massachusetts $385 million a year for the state's saftey net hospitals. Then he covered as many people as he possibly could under Medicaid to get as much in matching Medicaid dollars from the federal government. Then added to the pot a tax that Massachusetts had already passed to pay hospitals for the care they provided to the uninsured. Obama continued those payments. Will Romney?

Given the Medicaid cuts Romney proposed last Wednesday, there is a good posibility that his Romney Care will collapse. And the posibility for other states to implement a similar plan? What do you think?

Romney said on the Tonight Show that he would not cover pre-existing conditions. On Meet The Press he said he would support coverage of existing conditions only to have his campaign committee release a statement later that day that no, Romney did not support that. Then in the debate Romney said his plan included covering pre-existing conditions and again his campaign folks came back later and said no it didn't.

Tom, in the poll I cited Romney led by 4 in poll group. Of the rest of the poll groups three were tied. One of them being the Rasmussen polls. Two had O'bama in the lead by 3 points. One had him in the lead by 1 point. Romney has been completely ahead of O'bama at least once in the election.

Romney may simply be better at Debates then O'bama I grant that. It doesn't mean Romney will win if he is better at debate. Kerry won a debate with G. W. Bush and still lost to him in 2004.

Why is it okay to insist that the poor and the middle class make all the sacrifices and the wealthy make none. That is what I hear when you say the poor have nothing because they choose to poor. Sorry, but exit polling consistently shows that the Democrats dominate the most educated, and the worst Educated. The most of the worst educated are not going to be swayed by a poll, but they can be swayed by who looks like they will give them more. The Democrats are always offering more food stamps, welfare, unemployment, free cell phones (actually an alteration of the Lifeline Assistance program created by the Federal Communications Commission in 1984 to help the elderly & disabled to have 911 service).

In 2008, in recognition that people were dropping land lines to have only cell phones, The democrat congress passed legistlation on a bi-partisan vote to put the growing funds into cell phones. This was signed by George Bush. So, if a president deserves credit, it is George Bush. In 2009, an email campaign was run terming the "free phones" as "Obama Phones". Since that time it has caught on like wildfire in the poor communities and you have to wonder if the funds are covering for all these "free" phones. The poor seem pretty informed on how to get the free stuff and are pretty convinced somehow that it all came from Obama. I wonder how that happened!

Charlie, Please take a breath. I will completely admitt that this poll may not be that accurate as it may have oversampled Republicans by as much as 5%. The numbers they give say that out of 1,500 people they had 552 Obama supporters 567 Romney supporters and the rest as being independent, a slight Republican advantage, but basically a tie. But when you look at their plus or minus accuracy it was up to almost 5%, meaning they could have actually had up to 5% more Republicans then they thought.

I look at the sampling size on all polls and up tell now they have been Democrat +7 and now all of a sudden they sample even or Republican plus. The truth is the reason all the polls are pretty much junk is because we don't know what they turn out will be. I doubt Obama and Democrats can match their 2008 numbers that had a 7 point advantage over Republicans making those polls crap, but I also doubt Republicans will have a 5 point advantage over Democrats. We don't know until the actual day comes and until then ALL THE POLLS are nothing more then guess work and the company who has the best guess on turnout percentage will have the most accurate poll numbers. My guess is no one knows what is going to happen, or what the turnout will be and that all these POLLS ARE STILL CRAP!

Obama lost the last debate because he forgot the basic rules of lying. No matter what lie you tell you must remember that it is still a lie!

Obama has been telling lies about Romney so long that even he thinks they are true. When Romney corrected him Obama lost all sense of direction! Without his teleprompter he had no way of knowing what was truth and what was just another one of his lies!

@LogicRequired.........."polls" have become irrelevant in the wake of what happened back in 2000. People tend to lie now, when asked who they support. What's more savvy political types can manipulate the results of any poll by not taking an adequate cross sampling of all socio-economic, and geo-political demographics.

So, what it all boils down to is that the only poll that matters is the one they take on November 6th. Everything else is superfluous.

However, I will say this; two polls that previously showed Obama with a lead inside of the margin for error, now show Romney ahead of him. This happened after the debate.

To me, that means the race was always, and is still too close to call. A competent incumbant President would normally/should have a double digit lead by now.

I think this one is going to come down to the wee small hours of the morning on November 7th, and it could well be an "electoral" victory for whoever wins. That is to say, that the guy who gets more of the popular vote this year, may not necessarily win the election.

Stay tuned folks. I have a funny feeling this is going to be one for the ages!

Face it! The last time Republicans had the reins, they screwed up royally. They are promoting the same failed policies this time around. You just defined the biggest hurdle Republicans face in this (and probably many more) election!

Several here say they "trust" the polls and some don't. I have actually conducted polls and have also taught college Statistics which we cover Sampling Distributions significantly and the one comment I can make is a poll is VERY accurate IF conducted properly and in a completely unbiased method. Having said that I don't trust these types of polls any farther than I can throw them. We have media with an agenda and they conduct polls "leaning" that way. So the polls are relatively close but when they give a margin of error of +-3.5% (for example) I make that margin bigger. So if one candidate is up by, say, 10% I give that a relative accuracy. Unless they REALLY bias themselves (which I have seen in a few) then a 10% is good enough. But anything within 5% either way is a statistical tie as far as I am concerned.

So brings us back to the latest polls. When Romney moves from "down 8%" to "up 4%" from the SAME pollster that is not good for Obama no matter which way the bias is. Romney clearly has the momentum but 3+ weeks is still a LONG time in politics so it doesn't mean a "hill of beans" right now - so much can change in the next couple weeks. But Romney has to be very pleased with the latest trends - however the only "poll" that matters is on November 6th so time will tell.

Sorry, George Bush is not president anymore. Bush hasn't been president since January 2009 - Obama has. And this economy is worse by any measurement: Stagnant GDP, higher unemployment, 1 in 7 on Food Stamps, 1 in 6 in Poverty, lowest labor participation rate since the 70's, and highest percent unemployed 6 months or more since the Great Depression.

Obama has failed. Let's focus on the results of this current president and his failed policies. Obama can't defend his failed policies so must try to "scare" voters with pictures of big bird and giving out free birth control. Sorry, our country has REAL problems and we need a REAL leader like Romney to actually fix them.

Romney has lived an exemplary life, has been a pillar of his community and he and his wife have aided many charities over the years - and they are the parents of five well adjusted and respectful sons. Oh yeah and he is wealthy and successful - so, is THAT what you hold against him??

I don't believe for a minute that you've ever conducted a poll or taught Statistics at university in your life. You don't know how to construct a simple argument, how can the readers expect you to construct something as complicated as a poll. Do you even know the first steps involved in constructing a poll?

Among other things, constructing a poll involves, targeting a population and composing the interview questions that the pollsters will ask the targeted population. Now, if you don't know what questions the pollsters will ask the population, then how can you claim that the polls were skewed toward a "media with an agenda?" The answer is, you can't make that claim with any degree of certainty.

You don't know if the poll was constructed with a built-in bias, because you don't have any of the poll specifications to interpret, i.e., what questions were asked; who was targeted; where was the poll taken, the age group/s that were polled; what time of day was the poll taken; what type of search was conducted to eliminate confounds; what kind of confounds were found, etc, etc.

You're nothing more than a misinformed shill. You wouldn't know how to construct a poll if it walked up to you a bit you in the ass.
