Romney: Risk of conflict higher in Mideast after Obama policies

Charles Dharapak / AP

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney \arrives to deliver a foreign policy speech at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va., Monday, Oct. 8, 2012.

Updated at 12:20 p.m. ET: Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama of leading a rudderless foreign policy, saying Monday that the threat of conflict in the Middle East is greater than it was four years ago.

The Republican presidential nominee delivered a major policy address at the Virginia Military Institute, which was intended to distinguish Romney from Obama on questions of foreign policy, while also casting Romney as a steady, presidential and plausible commander-in-chief for voters.

Recommended: First Thoughts: Has the race changed?

The speech focused heavily on upheaval in the Middle East — the attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya, popular uprisings in Syria and Egypt, the Iranian nuclear program and America's relationship with Israel — to level the charge that Obama had chosen to "lead from behind" as president.

During a campaign speech at the Virginia Military Institute, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney outlined his plan for easing tension in the Middle East, preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability and a successful transition of power in Afghanistan.

"The president is fond of saying that 'the tide of war is receding.'  And I want to believe him as much as anyone," Romney said. "But when we look at the Middle East today … it is clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office."

Romney essentially argued that, in most instances, Obama had failed to project a clear and coherent American policy abroad. The GOP presidential hopeful suggested that he would use U.S. power with greater clarity, taking a tougher tack versus Iran and working to support allied forces in Syria, where the Assad regime has launched assaults on rebels that have left thousands dead.

Much of the speech dealt with the recent outbreak of violence in Libya, where a siege on a U.S. consulate — waged apparently by terrorists — left four Americans dead, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is set to deliver a major foreign policy speech today, but as NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro report, the policies Romney will propose sound similar to those pursued by President Obama.

Romney said those attacks were "likely the work of forces affiliated with those that attacked our homeland on Sept. 11, 2001," reflecting the emerging admission by the Obama administration that the Libya incident was a terrorist attack, rather than a spontaneous protest connected to a web video about Islam, as had originally been thought.

Romney's handling of the immediate aftermath of the Benghazi attack, though, had partly prompted his decision to deliver such a broad-reaching foreign policy address as today's. The candidate earlier had charged the administration with, essentially, siding with the attackers on the U.S. consulate — an argument that was labeled by critics as capricious, since it came just hours after Stevens' death.

"I also believe the administration was wrong to stand by a statement sympathizing with those who had breached our embassy in Egypt, instead of condemning their actions," Romney said at the time. "It’s never too early for the United States government to condemn attacks on Americans and to defend our values."

Today, Romney placed blame for the attacks "solely" with those who had launched them, but argued that Obama had nonetheless been asleep at the wheel throughout the crisis.

"It is the responsibility of our president to use America’s great power to shape history — not to lead from behind, leaving our destiny at the mercy of events," Romney said. "Unfortunately, that is exactly where we find ourselves in the Middle East under President Obama."

That theme echoed throughout Romney's remarks, which included a vow to tighten sanctions against Iran's nuclear program and reverse a set of automatic spending cuts — which would fall heavily on the defense budget — set to take place at the beginning of 2013, barring action by Congress.

Romney also called for a closer relationship between the U.S. and Israel, a hallmark of the Republican nominee's campaign speeches, along with expanded free-trade pacts in the Middle East and beyond.

From governor's son to presidential contender, a look at the life of Republican Mitt Romney.

The former Massachusetts governor also said he would act more forcefully to encourage popular uprisings in Syria and Egypt. Romney said he would "identify and organize those members of the opposition who share our values" in Syria, and arm them. In Egypt, Romney said he would try to influence that government's development to support democracy and their peace treaty with Israel.

Monday's stagecraft, though, was essentially an effort to offer up Romney as a reasonable alternative to Obama as a world leader, and distinguish the two candidates more meaningfully. There were details, though, that were absent from Romney's speech; he didn't outline the standard by which he would authorize more sanctions or military action versus Iran. And while Romney called Obama's decision to withdraw the last "surge" troops from Afghanistan last month a "politically timed retreat," Romney would only have kept those troops there a few months longer, through the height of the fighting season.

Obama enjoys an advantage over Romney on both the question of which candidate would be a better commander-in-chief and which candidate voters trust to better manage foreign policy.

Forty-seven percent of voters said in last week's NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll that Obama would be a better commander in chief; 39 percent of registered voters preferred Romney. On the question of who would best handle foreign policy, Obama led 46 to 40 percent.

But there are additional signs that Obama faces vulnerabilities. Americans were split, 46 to 45 percent, in disapproving of the president's handling of the situation in Egypt, Libya and other Arab countries that are suffering from unrest.

"We just watched what leadership looks like," said Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee, in Ohio shortly after Romney's remarks concluded.

Still, the election is expect to focus primarily on issues of the economy, while foreign policy takes a backseat to more dominant pocketbook issues.

Foreign policy and national security strategy, though, will each be litigated further over the course of the campaign. One of the two remaining debates between Obama and Romney will be mostly dedicated to that subject, and this Thursday's vice presidential debate will pit Ryan — whose expertise rests on budgetary issues, not foreign policy — against Vice President Joe Biden, a former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Romney goes on TV selling to his crazy Christian conservative base to join the crazy Jewish conservatives to go to war with the other crazy non-christian, non-Jewish conservatives on the other end of the world.

Romney is pushing for war war war and to borrow borrow borrow to spend spend spend on more defense contracts and campaigns.

Wow.

I thought he was for spending reductions.

Why does MSNBC give Romney so much air time??

He gets more than Obama does, Obama always gets cut off on his speeches

Obama gets "cut off", because the timer on his teleprompter ran out, and he cannot form a coherent statement, unless someone is telling him what to say. Don't believe me? Re-watch the debate. The man was helplessly lost. Indecisive, unsure, and stumbling.

Just saw Romney giving his address. He looked and sounded the part of the very definition of a President of the United States of America!

One thing he said that sticks out is planet earth 'looks to the United States' leadership. If the United States will not lead, someone else will.'

Obama in 2008, Romney in 2012!

Senator McCain seems to think and has stated that our President isn't capable of being Commander In Chief because he never served. Has Romney? Does any of Romney's kids plan on serving their country? Are your kids part of the 47% just because they are serving in the military instead of being self supportive?

If Obama leads from the rear does anyone really believe the draft dodger will lead from the front? I hate to tell him but invading more middle east countries while you remain in Washington D.C. isn't leading from the front. His idea of the front during Vietnam was the wilds of France doing missionary work after his 3 educational deferments were exhausted.

It is easier to embrace war if you get a religious deferment and skate off to France. Then you can rattle your sabres with impunity.

Though an early supporter of the Vietnam War, Romney avoided military service at the height of the fighting after high school by seeking and receiving four draft deferments, according to Selective Service records. They included college deferments and a 31-month stretch as a "minister of religion" in France, a classification for Mormon missionaries that the church at the time feared was being overused.
Many years later, in 1994, Romney said, "It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam, but nor did I take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft." That wasn't true -- he took several steps to remove himself from the eligibility pool.

His longing to be in Vietnam evidently was not as strong as his longing to keep his butt in one piece. He requested deferments until they ran out.

Yeah, you're a regular hero.

War on women,
War on fuel,
War on America,
What are we to do?

Fast and Furious,
And Benghazi too.
Several are dead,
Because of you.

Splitting the country,
In more ways than one.
You won't be happy,
Until you have won.

Wasted tax dollars,
Right down the drain
.And you want more,
You are inflicting such pain.

On November the sixth,
I will cast my vote.
And I hope and pray,
This is far as it goes.

I am a proud veteran,
Who went to Viet Nam.
And I will not bury,
My head in the sand.

To "The Messiah" Obama,
You must go.
For the good of the country,
God please make it so.

Romney said that Russia was the number 1 foe, I guess he changed his mind.

What exactly would Romney do differently. We already have sanctions on Iran. Obama is already after those that did the embassy bombing. We already will support Israel militarily against a nuclear Iran.

Romney continues to be vague and not give specifics.

They call the GOP "do nothing." But lets look at reality. Who was the one who did nothing as our own citizens we're slaughtered in the Middle East? Who was the one who did nothing as Syrians we're massacred in the streets by their own government? Who was the one who did nothing as the Iranians mocked the UN and the rest of the world as they continued to pursue their Nuclear ambitions.

Oh, he got Bin Laden (No, the seals shot him while he sat in his bunker praying it would go well so he could get some extra votes.)

Oh he liberated Lybia (A libya that sits by as terrorist kill our citizens, and he holds them to no account for their inaction.)

Foreign Policy = Fail, Economy = Fail, and the American people are tired of it, and they will let him know in November.

This is truly amazing. Willard Romney has to be the most "ass backward", and in fact, the "stupidest", gwaddamned Presidential candidate to ever kiss the ass of any special interest donor since candidates have been kissing donors asses. We all, other than the genuine psychopaths, have learned the self destructive lunacy of stirring hornets nests. We can destroy the nests, but, all that accomplishes is a scattering of the hornets, who then build new nests in different locations. Course, those who turn great profits from building and brokering various war armament love it. Those though, who have to go and use that armament suffer greatly. It's the one economic area that yields no positive economic return, and, in fact, diminishes the whole economic value of the nation, often, in incalculable dimensions. It is one thing when the nation has to defend Itself from an aggressor, but, quite another when the country becomes the aggressor, as the debris of history so vividly illustrates. Nothing more dangerous than an uninformed and ambitious fool, open to the transactions of money for favor, derived from unscrupulous benefactors. Romney has just proven Himself such a fool.

Romney said he would "identify and organize those members of the opposition who share our values" in Syria, and arm them.

They are Muslims and do not share Christian values. People of different faith or culture do not work within our cultural or religious frame work. Most Republicans where against any involvement in Lybia, but now their party leader is for involvement in Syria? If we are going to engage the Middle East, we will have to do nation building and there is no appetite or money for that right now. As far as Israel goes, there is no other country in the world that has the might of the US government at it's finger tips. No matter who is in power, the US will not let Israel fall.

Would you say the duopoly control over the Presidential Debates, is most
important toward preventing an elevation in the discussion about balancing the
budget, or more toward avoiding foreign policy criticism, as a reason to dismiss
Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, and Virgil Goode?

I’m not wasting my vote on the FED sponsored “Robamney puppet show”.

These FED puppets will bomb Iran if the FED knows it’s game is lost when Iran
sells oil to China and Russia for gold, threatening the dollar. It’s why we
bombed Iraq in 2003, to restore oil sales back to the dollar from euros. Obama
armed Al Qaida to overthrow Libya because of the dinar threat to the dollar. As
soon as Gadaffi was executed, a “central bank” was set up.

The FED is the mysterious authority behind our U.S. Military, and a handful of rich evil men are trying to control the world by building up the United Nations and secret agenda has our own President joining forces with NATO.

Any nation or state posing a threat to the dollar as the "world reserve currency", becomes the "enemy". Iran is one of the last independent oil producing nations in that region. Russia and China have drawn a line in that Persian sand, with public declarations not to bother Syria or Iran.

The FED has us on a trajectory straight toward WW3, and like a spoiled four year old is about to toss the board and all the pieces on the floor without compassion or regard to human suffering.

Call Harry. Get involved. You won’t see word of this from the FED censored
media.

HR459, S202 “The Federal Reserve Transparency Act” is dying a death of
neglect on the desk of the Democratic Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate who
needs to bring it to a roll call vote, now that “Audit the FED” has
overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives.

Fight for what’s right NOW!

Call Senator Harry Reid, his number is: 202-224-3542

Tell Harry to “Audit the FED”.

And vote for Gary Johnson, POTUS 2012

viknat re Lincoln: Abraham Lincoln served as a volunteer in the Illinois Militia from April 21, 1832 – July 10, 1832 during the Black Hawk War. Lincoln never saw combat during his tour but was elected captain of his first company. He was also present in the aftermath of two of the war's battles, where he helped to bury the militia dead. He was mustered in and out of service during the war, going from captain to private and finishing his service in an independent spy company commanded by Captain Jacob Early.

"The House Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairman committed Thursday to taking a closer look at President Obama’s Veterans Job Corps Act but warned that he views it as an expensive and bureaucratic way to provide only temporary employment.

The plan, which has been blocked in the Senate by Republicans, would create jobs in three ways: It would provide grants to pay for temporary jobs in conservation-related work on federal lands and in maintenance of national veterans cemeteries; it would order federal agencies to hire up to 10,000 more veterans; and it would provide hiring preference for veterans in first-responder jobs in law enforcement and firefighting.

Overall, the job corps bill is expected to create 20,000 jobs, many of them temporary, which would put only a small dent in the estimated total of 700,000 jobless veterans."

Apparently some in the military were not to fond of the bill either!

ONTOR

Obama's ear to ear smile won't help him get elected this time .

Think again Buddy. President Obama leads in most polls. Myth only leads among old white men. MYTH needs more support than white men old rich white fossils. More women , seniors, veterans, LGBTs, the youth, Asians, Native Americans, and Latinos support our President. Mathematically this poses a problem for MYTH!!!!

The very low levels of trust in Romney’s foreign policy abilities are striking. Only 24% of Latino voters believe Romney would do a better job than President Obama on critical Middle East policy matters. This number nearly mirrors the share of Latino voters indicating they will vote for Romney in November. When asked about Latin American foreign policy, only 17% of Latino voters indicating Romney and the Republican Party would do a better job in the region. The trigger for this sentiment is likely associated with the Romney campaign’s approach to several different policy issues and international events that have been widely criticized, even among the Republican ranks.

For now, Latinos are solidly behind Obama and believe he will do a better job of dealing with foreign policy matters. The only question is if the mythical October (or November) foreign policy surprise will arrive, and alter perceptions. To date, Obama has weathered such ‘surprises’ rather well.

1. I voted Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I've decided to marry my Doberman Pincher, Doc. Answer: The fact that you are thinking about bestiality speaks volumes about what gets you off. Being free to marry who you like, does not include animals, but since I am a liberal...whatever flows your boat bscol, just leave my pet alone and answer to the authorities.

2. I voted Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the Government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn't. Answer: Gas stations are not Oil companies and oil companies would not drill if they are getting 4%.

3. I voted Democrat because I believe the Government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would. Answer: Another bs argument. Government is there for all the people and that includes the people who needs help and not just corporations, since they are people too.

4. I voted Democrat because Freedom of Speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it. Answer: Wait, your freedom of speech is being taken away, but yet still you can spew crap from your computer. Yet again, another bs argument. If you really cared about freedom of speech, where were you the patriot act rip some of our freedom away? (Yep, I blame both GOP and Dems for this crap too).

5. I voted Democrat because I'm way too irresponsible to own a gun and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves. Answer: Local police are there to protect us. I am sure you would like to have the police to be around when you are not home, because I am sure a gun cannot shoot itself. So, the local police is another example of our tax dollars at work.

6. I voted Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday can tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in 10 years if I don't start driving a Prius. Answer: Nevermind, this comment is devoid of any common sense or valid points.

7. I voted Democrat because I'm not concerned about millions of babies being aborted so long as we keep all death row inmates alive. Answer: How many ads have you seen from the pro-life group about adoption? Not much if any at all. Contraception can stop those babies from being aborted, but hey that is a common sense approach and most conservatives seems to lack that gene.

8. I voted Democrat because I think illegal aliens have a right to free health care, education and Social Security benefits, and we should take away the Social Security from those who paid into it. Answer: I would say you are lying, but that would be an under statement to an idiotic statement.

9. I voted Democrat because I believe that businesses should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as the Democrats see fit. Answer: Another tried and true tired line used by the right. See what happens when poor people and the middle class doesn't have money to consume goods made by those wonderful for profit businesses? Yep, they go crawling to the government for money. More and more I feel like I am wasting my time counter pointing, since you get delusional as I read down your list.

10. I voted Democrat because I believe liberal Judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters. Answer: I just want to thank Chief Justice Roberts for help with healthcare reform. I am so glad Obama appointed him. Oh wait a second... :)

11. I voted Democrat because I think that it's better to pay billions for their oil to people who hate us but not drill our own because it might upset some endangered beetle, gopher or fish. Answer: Take a look at US and North American oil product. It's up and so is Natural Gas production. BTW: They are waiting for pipelines, so they can export our natural resources, but you are to clever to ever look into that.

12. I voted Democrat because my head is so firmly planted up my a$$, it's unlikely that I'll ever have another point of view. Answer: GSS = GOP Superiority Syndrome. Only cure for this is to vote for Obama in for a second term. Then we will have GOS = GOP Outrage Syndrome.

I am a democract and I approve my answers to a silly conservative rant.

Three things.

A.) Where is the money going to come from to pay for American intervention in the Middle East when Romney reduces revenues with his tax breaks and the $14 trillion debt we currently owe?

B.) Romney says this today. It's election time. What happens when he flips then flops on this issue?

C.) How is it with the Conservatives can always find money to to be involved in the Middle East (which Middle Easterners resent) but we can't fund a decent standard of living or health care for our seniors?

Sam...

Seems pretty vital to you that Mr. Romney's sons sign up for military service, just in case our troops are needed somewhere on the planet. However, I'm sure that whichever branch of the military they signed up for would be the wrong one, in your eyes.

Has Mr. Obama started to plan for his daughters' military service ??? I figure the girls must have some pretty big time computer equipment living in the White House. Maybe the President can get them signed up for serving in the armed drone program he uses so very often...maybe Sasha and Malia can help improve on the program's 15+% civilian kill rate from the attacks. That might also give some comfort to the innocent Pakistanis on the ground who live in daily fear of the armed drones buzzing over their heads each day.

Since his name is always brought up on this site...I wonder how much we'd be seeing outrage and protests from the 'left' if it had been George Bush killing innocent families on the ground in Pakistan and frightening the nation's citizens on a daily basis ?

And oh how the media would be foaming at the ears critcizing ol' George Bush over what took place in the Middle East two weeks ago ! I pretty much doubt the media would have given him a pass on the "well you see, there was this 13 minute YouTube video" laughably lame excuse for what had happened at our foreign embassies.

Gallup Obama 47, Romney 47. Gallup is done based on the actual national percentage of Registered Democrats, Republicans, and others. A few days ago, Obama was up 5 points over Romney.

Registered voters is who could vote. That is 6 points of people who are either voting for a different candidate, and have already decided they probably will not vote for the Incumbent.

Your candidate might well have the lead on paper today, but tomorrow that goes away.

Rasmussen uses Likely voters. They poll to determine who is going to vote and how those are going to vote and use responses that reflect that determination. Today, that is also tied.

If Rasmussen shows romney ahead, Romney will probably win. IF Gallup shows Romney to win, Romney will Win.

From the article above:

Romney essentially argued that, in most instances, Obama had failed to project a clear and coherent American policy abroad.

And if the Governor didn't watch Faux, he'd know along with the majority of Americans that this President has been a leader and a champion on Foreign Policy.

In less than 24 hours Romney is already modifying his foreign policy. In his pre-released transcripts he said "We share the values" of the Syrian Rebels and said we should supply them with anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons. Very stupid irresponsible statements. Today he modified his position only saying that we should help get the rebels armed. Also irresponsible without knowing any intel on what's going on and who's behind it. Romney isn't privy to an intelligence information anymore than the general public is.

Yes we know that many regular Syrians have taken up the fight, but who is behind them? Who is the recognized leadership of the rebels? No doubt the Syrian government is reacting in a manner that seems to take no concerns for innocent civilians. He's been denounced for that and sanctioning policies have been put in place. The trouble is that not too long ago Assad was an ally staunchly opposing and conducting operations against Al Qaeda trying to get them out of his country. There should be no doubt that this started with Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda affiliated groups attacking the Syrian government. But today it has morphed into a full blown revolution with many ordinary Syrian civilians participating. But what are these people fighting for? Do they even know? I have little doubt that many feel they are fighting for their own lives and maybe to some very vague way, becoming part of the "Arab Spring" movement. But what are their positions? What do they seek to change in the way Syria operates? No one knows. In all likelihood, Al Qaeda started this and the over reaction of Assad just got many others involved.

The facts are that the US government, including the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been talking with and meeting with Syrian rebels to determine who's in charge. There should also be no doubt that we are helping provide small arms to the rebels. However all indications are that there is no reliable or even accepted leadership of the rebels. Knowing full well that Al Qaeda is at a minimum, a player, it is foolish to seriously backing a group, or more appropriately, a bunch of unorganized fighters. Opposing Assad's tactics and providing some assistance to keep him at bay is reasonable, and that's what we are doing. However, providing serious weapons and support to crush Assad quickly may not be such a good idea, because you have to ask, what happens next after he's ousted? Most likely, the most organized group within the rebel hoards, will rise to power. And at least today, that is Al Qaeda.

In a lot of respects, it actually makes sense to let things develop and let a true organized opposition group with recognized leadership, emerge. In reality, that is what we did in Libya, but it developed relatively quickly as there was strong leadership by their rebels, long before it became a major conflict. It is fine to back the general development of movements, but until that movement can define itself, it is dangerous to escalate it into power before it is ready.

Romney wants to shape the movement and steer it in a way that fits with our goals. The problem is that we have historically pushed people into power in this region only to have it backfire on us because the people were not behind the group we selected. This never works. Innocent people are dying and we should be concerned about that and doing things to save lives as we are. But rushing in to bring it to a conclusion is dangerous without understanding clearly what takes its place. Likewise rushing in to install our desired "puppet government" makes no sense either. That is in reality what Romney wants to do.

MDC - No, I am not a "Leftie" - I am an American and, as such, I believe that we have a duty to protect our country, but that does not mean we have the right to invade every country on the planet that has natural resources we want or start a war simply to put more money into the pockets of the military-industrial complex.

It is my opinion, after reading a great deal about him, that Romney would be dangerous to the American middle class, that he is an entitled frat boy who has no empathy for the poor or middle class and is anxious to send us into unnecessary wars simply to help his cronies make a lot of money at the expense of the taxpayers and the young men and women who would become fodder for his greed.

Jahmekan said;

They are Muslims and do not share Christian values.

Er, I'd like to differ with you on that.

While there are theological differences, and the Qu'ran is most like the Old Testament in general tone and content, they do acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah, they do acknowledge that he was Immaculately Conceived on Mary, and many of the Qu'ran's laws are the same as in the Bible's book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy--stoning of disobedient children, raped women forced to marry their rapist, etc.

From where I stand as a Pagan (and therefore outside the Abrahamic belief systems) there's really not much difference between you. The difference is chiefly in the matter of where your religion is in your evolution; Jews wen through their 'let's kill everyone who doesn't agree with us' when they crucified Jesus; the Christians went through their 'let's kill everyone who doesn't agree with us during the middle ages (inquisition) and although there are still a few places in the world where Christians kill witches, for the most part you've learned to get along with other religions. The Muslim religion is still relatively young (wasn't founded until about the 7th century CE so they are right now trying to evolve past their 'let's kill everyone who doesn't agree with us stage.

People of different faith or culture do not work within our cultural or religious frame work.

This country was founded on separation of Church and State. There should be no question of whether another's religion 'works within our religious framework'.

This country was also founded on immigration, many different peoples from many different countries. Therefore, you cannot say someone else's culture doesn't work within ours. Our culture has been influenced by many other cultures from all over the planet, and as a result, there will always be something in our culture that offends someone else but there will also be something in our culture that they identify with. The intent here is to enforce our secular laws so that they eventually come to realize that playing nice with others is the only way to live here.

Obama is in so far over his head it isn't funny. He knows nothing about dealing with our allies, nor about dealing with our enemies. If it wasn't for Hillary Clinton we'd be in a lot of trouble with regard to our foreign policy. She's held things together in our State Department, while this nincompoop in the White House tries to figure out what day it is.

Maintaining a strong military, and making it known that we won't tolerate threats from hostile nations, or that we will not negotiate with terrorists isn't "war mongering."

But rather, it is simple common sense.

Obama's Presidency started off with an apology tour.

Romney's will start of with a Victory Tour in celebration of our return to GREATNESS, again!

To be clear I have been a lifelong member of the Democratic Party
– I voted for President Obama based on these reasons.

Obama promised

-
to bring the country together like never before

-
to bridge the gap between all races and enter
into a new era of hope

-
to cut our national debt in half by the end of
his first term (why our media fails to ignore the importance of this boggles my
mind) the reality of what he did turns into a 11 trillion dollar lie * in 2008
our national debt was 10,000,000,000,000 – if Obama did what he promised it
would now be 5 trillion – it just tipped the scales at 16 trillion. How he gets away with this is insane to me –
just an average middle class American.
To see a man or even a neighbor go to jail for stealing a pack of gum –
it just amazes me what our leaders get away with.

-
to bring a new era in the relationships with
other countries around the world and because he has the racial profile he does
it would allow American hating extremist around the world to look at us in a
new light – the reality is after securing the country of Iraq (at the cost of
billions in cash as well as life) we are about to let them be overrun by west
hating extremist * the same goes in Afghanistan – our current sitting president
is so concerned about his political position with the up and coming election he
chose to make it world knowledge that we are leaving Afghanistan. This says to me a person who served 4 years
in the navy – that he could care less about the safety of our troops that are
still there. Here is what is happening now
– because the Afghan people know we are leaving them to fend for themselves – factions
of average village people are now trying to show Al Qaeda that their village is
anti America – thus our troops are experiencing heightened attacks from those
we have actually been trying to help for more than ten years

-
to create millions and millions of green
jobs. The reality is that pipe dream
does not exist – but because of Obamas arrogance he thought the average American
would go out and purchase solar panels for their house or purchase a chevy volt
at a cool 50,000 each. He didn’t realize
the reality of why we use coal to provide electricity across the grid or oil to
heat our homes or gas to drive a car – they are the cheapest and most efficient
forms of energy. The facts are the only
reason any green jobs exist is because they function wholly on the backs of the
tax paying citizens. To see Obama at the
last debate attempt to demonize the big oil companies (which no one is ever going
to love – including me) because they have received up to 2 billion in tax payer
subsidies – but the real shocker is the fact that he gave 90 billion to green
energy companies like Solyndra and those companies donated millions to his campaign
– I don’t like using my hard earned tax money to be stolen by a fraud. Here is the truth – Obama wants gas prices to
sky rocket – that is why he has shut down any new permits to drill oil in this
country – so now oil companies have to purchase land in order to drill in
private – when what they had been doing is paying the government huge fees in
leasing government land – so his thought is if the gas prices get high enough
us idiot American will run to a green energy source – and we would but we will go
bankrupt. The coal industry produces
electricity at 3-5 cents per Killiwatt hour – while solar/wind produce energy
at $22 dollars and hour – our government has given and continues to subsidize the
wind/solar at $20 dollars – how stupid is that. 90 billion going to private companies – if this
were going to something the extreme left hates – there would be pure outrage.

-
To balance our Federal Budget – the reality is
Democrats have had control of the House and Senate since 2006 – and in 2010 the
people spoke and kicked many of them out – now they only control the
senate. So for the 4 years Obama has
been president our government runs without a budget. On a credit rating that has just been
downgraded for the first time in modern history. And due to be dropped again after the
election if Obama is re-elected. Which
means our national debt is going to grow faster – and sealing the fate of our
children and grandchildren. This proves
again that this man is not a leader – or he just doesn’t care.

-
Jobs Jobs Jobs – like our dufus VP said on the campaign
trail – Obama is all about that 3 letter word JOBS JOBS JOBS – what a dufus. The reality is Obama spent the first two
years in office with complete control of all 3 houses – and he spent if
fighting for a healthcare bill that has no business playing a role in this
country under our constitution. I agree
there needs to be changes to our healthcare system but this is far from what
needs to be done and to have our speaker of the house at the time say (“we will
find out what is in it after we vote for it”)
you cant make this @!$%# up – crazy loony people running our country. Scary.

What really sucks – is I bought into the hope and change – I
am a white male – but have 1/6 Native American Indian blood and I played football
in college – which brought me together with my now two best friends who are
African American – but I only use those terms to describe this here when in
reality they are my brothers. They are
in shock as to what has transpired and they do not believe a word that comes
out of our current sitting Presidents mouth.
I could go on and on but I am sure I will get bashed for daring to speak
my mind and against the god in chief for so many of you.

And how exactly are we going to pay for these wars? Does Mitt Romney we propose putting more foreign wars on the credit card like Bush did, or will he act responsibly like Obama and make sure that any wars (new or existing) were accounted for?

It is impossible to be both a War Hawk and a Deficit Hawk at the same time.

It's going to be very difficult to "get tough on China" when you're begging to borrow money from them to fund a war with Iran.

Better yet, if we're going to practice Nation Building...let's start here at home.

I heard Mittens say a couple weeks ago that he would solve the entire Middle East conflict by telling Egypt and the other countries that he is standing firm, and if they want aid from the U.S. they would have to stop fighting and adopt a democratic government. At least that's what he said he would do if he had Obama's job.

Who knew that was all we had to do all these many decades ago to bring peace to the Middle East. That Ramneybo is a legend in his own mind.

One thing he said that sticks out is planet earth 'looks to the United States' leadership. If the United States will not lead, someone else will.'

That is an ignorant statement. Anyone that believes America should be the world's leader could easily be the next Hitler. Hitler also believed that the world would be better off led by his own country.

What the GOP fails to understand is that not every culture on this planet is waiting with abated breath for U.S. leadership. We already know who our allies are, Romney apparently does not, as he has insulted two of them already. He has also labeled Russia an enemy at a time when our relations are already strained. Let's take a look at his vague policies to this point:

1. Russia is an enemy

2. Peace between Israel and the Palestinians cannot exist and a two state solution will be a can kicked down the road.

3. Arm Syrian rebels with heavy weapons when rebel ranks are swelling with Jihadists.

4. Interfere with Egypt's transformation into Democracy.

5. In his speech, he not once mentioned working with allies to resolve the Iranian issue. He continually speaks of us, us, us, never mentions working within NATO or UN charters.

6. Will increase military spending by $2 trillion dollars even though the Pentagon has not requested it. In fact, the Pentagon has been requesting lower budgets in an effort to reduce costs. Never mentions how he'll pay for it.

He is beginning to come across as a neocon that believes it is our duty as a country to enforce democracy around the world, whether they want it or not. Americans are tired of war, and Romney seems determined to start at least two right away, possibly three if he wants to wipe out militants in Libya indiscriminately.

There is a different between debt and deficit. Obama promised to reduce the deficit (year over year overages), which was running several hundreds of billions of dollars per year. He instead raised it to over a thousand billion dollars per year.

The debt is another issue. It's the sum total of everything we owe.

Every time we see a middle east country institute a government by popular vote, is has come back to sting us. The Palestinians voted in Hamas. The Iraqi government is near dysfunctional. The Muslim Brotherhood won the Presidency in France. Libya has already dissolved it's first government and fired the PM. The Afghanistan government is rife with cronyism and fraud.

We can be there for these countries if asked to be. The attitude that we WILL BE THERE to lead and impose our values because we are the world's leader is a dangerous one.

    @Chef

There is a different between debt and deficit. Obama promised to reduce the deficit (year over year overages), which was running several hundreds of billions of dollars per year. He instead raised it to over a thousand billion dollars per year.

Spending increases under President Obama have only grown 1.4% since he has taken office. Obama did not increase spending over a trillion a year, that claim isn't even close to factual. The reason for our current deficit spending is a serious loss of revenue and a shaky economy. We also have not had congress pass an actual budget in years. They spend as they go.

The Bush tax cuts have to end some time, the sooner the better. Romney's plan adds to the deficit at a far greater pace than Obama ever will. his tax cuts will cost $500 billion a year, and he intends to pour $2 trillion into the military. Ending tax cuts for the wealthy will not pay for these policies in and of themselves, so where is the money going to come from? Borrowing!

WOLF: OBAMA ADMINISTRATION VIOLATES LONG-STANDING PRECEDENT
IN CIRCUMVENTING CONGRESS TO FUND THOMSON PRISON

Washington, D.C. (October 2, 2012) – In an unprecedented move, the Department of Justice (DOJ) today proceeded to acquire the Thomson Correctional Facility in Illinois for $165 million, despite the expressed opposition of the House Appropriations Committee.

Reps. Hal Rogers (R-KY) and Frank Wolf (R-VA), Chairmen of the House Committee on Appropriations and the subcommittee on Commerce-Justice-Science (CJS) respectively, have once again expressed vehement opposition to funding the prison.

Wolf, whose subcommittee funds the DOJ, denied the request for several reasons, including that it is considered an earmark by DOJ and was originally intended to house terrorists being held at Guantanamo Bay.

“President Obama’s unprecedented directive to Attorney General Holder to circumvent Congress to purchase Thomson prison is deeply troubling,” Wolf said. “It directly violates the clear objection of the House Appropriations Committee and goes against the bipartisan objections of members in the House and Senate, who have noted that approving this request would allow Thomson to take precedence over previously funded prisons in Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia and New Hampshire. Notably, it also flies in the face of concerns raised by scores of family members of 9/11 victims, who signed a letter in July objecting to the purchase of this prison.

“At an alarming $165 million, the size of this request is unprecedented,
he continued. “The purchase also violates the Obama administration’s own policy against funding earmark requests, as the Justice Department designated Senator Durbin’s request for the Thomson acquisition. Moreover, the timing of this $165 million windfall to the president’s home state of Illinois, just weeks before election day, is suspect.

"Most importantly, I am concerned that this purchase will set in motion the administration’s plan to close the terrorist detention facility in Guantanamo Bay by transferring terrorist detainees to U.S. maximum security prisons, like Thomson. One example of this ongoing effort is the request of Senator Durbin’s colleague, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Diane Feinstein, to the Government Accountability Office to conduct a survey of U.S. prisons that could be used to hold Guantanamo Bay detainees, which is ongoing.

“Today’s actions are just the latest in series of disconcerting moves by this Justice Department, including its handling of the Fast and Furious Operation, allowing nepotism in hiring, its questionable dismissal of voting rights cases and the politicization of decisions that benefit special interest groups,” Wolf concluded. “This may be the most disreputable Justice Department in modern history.”

    Rogers agreed:

“The Obama administration has been trying for years to open Thompson prison in order to transfer terrorists from Guantanamo Bay onto U.S. soil,” he said. “Congress has vehemently denied this request and has refused funding for the prison at every step of the way. The American people do not want Guantanamo detainees in the U.S., and should not have to tolerate the risk of these terrorists residing in their backyards. This back-door move by the Obama Administration to open Thompson and reject the will of Congress and the American people is dangerously irresponsible, and will be met with the full and unfettered opposition of the Appropriations Committee.”

Wolf and Rogers were joined in their opposition to the funding request by bipartisan members of both the House and the Senate, including: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Wolf’s Senate counterpart on the CJS Subcommittee; Sens. Richard Shelby (R-AL), Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Thad Cochran (R-MS); Rep. Charlie Bass (R-NH); the entire House Alabama delegation; and more than 100 families of victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Mitt is not helping US policy in the Middle East. Publicly calling for US aid for forces opposing Syrian government would only reinforce Syrian government argument that the US is behind the uprising there. Perception does matter. There are many in Syria that believe Assad's claims.

In Egypt, cozying up to Egypt's President will only weaken his government. Anti-US sentiment left over from years of colonialism and US interventionist policy in Iraq and Afghanistan would only increase with a Romney foreign policy. Morsi is trying to distance himself from US to avoid being painted as our puppet there by his more extreme political opponents.

Romney means well, but his ignorance of US position in Middle East in the minds of middle easteners is mind-boggling.

Romney only strengthens the hand of pro-Assad forces in Syria and anti-Morsi forces in Egypt with his saber-rattling rhetoric. That he is so naive of perception of US in Middle East is very disappointing.

You may want to reread. I said Obama increased the deficit TO over a thousand billion per year, not BY.

As to the rest of it, are you saying the tax revenues are down due to jobs? Then shouldn't the president fix that? He promised to reduce the deficit by half and the easiest way to do that is to raise the revenue (i.e. the number of workers paying taxes).

You'll probably come back with something snarky like "Well the republicans...." to which I would respond "1) PAYGO. The dems wanted it, the dems got it, now the dems gotta live with it. and 2) So you're saying the president doesn't directly affect jobs? Then he should quit saying he does."

The Bush tax cuts? Those were renewed by the president so they are now The Obama Tax Cuts. If he wants to be president he has to own it.

I can't believe you brought up one of Mr. Obama's best buddies...Jeff Immelt...as one of your dreaded "greedy monsters". You remember Mr. Immelt, don't you...big Obama donor and the first person to be seated on the President's "Economic Jobs Committee"...you know...the committee whose mission is to help save the economy but whose actual meetings are NOT attended by the President about 6 out of every 10 times they meet. But Mr. Obama does get there about 4 out of those 10 times. The meeting times tend to conflict with Mr. Obama's visits to high school gymnasiums, golf courses, and Hollywood fundraisers.

Besides..."Economic Jobs Committee" meetings sometimes need to take a back seat to more urgent matters such as grilling radio debates with "Pimp With A Limp" or working with Whoopi Goldberg on what needs to be done to get the nation running smoothly.

    And as for this:

Why do you morons think we have not been invaded

Why would you assume we WOULD be invaded? If China invades, they spend a remarkable amount of money to try to get back the money they've already invested. It'd be an incredibly stupid move on China's part to invade, regardless of whomever the leaders of the country might be. There's nothing to gain from it. It's your paranoid fantasies that drain our budget trying to fight against ghosts and goblins that have our country bankrupt, and have made us have to borrow from China in the first place.

    Romney and the Vietnam War

1965: Mitt Romney protests in favor of the Vietnam War and draft.

1965-1969: Applied for and received 4 (four) draft deferments. Apparently he was cycling around Spain handing out religious literature.

1994- Romney quote: "It was not my desire to go off and serve in Vietnam, but nor did I take any actions to remove myself from the pool of young men who were eligible for the draft."

Yeah, he only "removed" himself from the United States.

2007- Romney quote: "I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there, and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam."

Huh...so Romney "longed to be in Vietnam"...apparently he didn't "long" hard enough....

Thanks for proving that the very Republicans who claim that Obama didn't keep his promise to close Guantanamo, are the same hypocrites who block the attempt.

At an alarming $165 million, the size of this request is unprecedented,

let's see, in FY2011 (July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011), SCDC (the state adult prison system in South Carolina) expended $336.6 million. Cost to build a 1,500-bed high security institution - $141 million.

Sens. Richard Shelby (R-AL), Jeff Sessions (R-AL),

$462.5 million - total cost of prisons in AL

    patriotfanforever,

Let's be clear. You have never been a Democrat. You have only been on this board for a couple weeks and every post you have made is so anti-Democratic, you make the likes of many right wing posters look like moderates!

You are completely entitled to post whatever you want, but come on, don't try to tell us you're a "life long Democrat". The fact that people can easily see through that smoke screen immediately takes away an credibility from your posts that you might otherwise get.

Do you really think anybody is buying that? Even if you were a Democrat who was very disappointed and disillusioned with Obama, you would not be on here posting like this so intently undemocratic, many times in such a short period. Nobody who has been a "life long Democrat" turns that far right without having a lobotomy!

I know Democrats who aren't all that happy with Obama, because he hasn't been able to push through enough of a Democratic agenda. They wish he had done better. But they are not about to completely abandon their principles and even remotely suggest that people should be supporting Romney instead.

I suggest you create a new persona and this time either come clean about what you represent or tailor your comments to a far more nuanced attempt to deceive us. I've read your posts and Mr. patriotfanforever, you're no Democrat.

    bayllie,

you're wrong about the wars in both iraq and afghanistan. those wars did nothing more than take away our rights. president Bush, with an executive order recinded our writ of habeus corpis-this protects us from being arrested and thrown into jail without representation by council and a speedy trial. the patriot act was passed that allows the government to spy on us and arrest us without telling us why-to put us in jail forever if they choose without charging us. we lost a lot because of these wars.

we've had enough war!!!! to quote a famous musician, "how many deaths will it take til we know, that too many people have died?" how many americans need to die on foreign soil before we realize that the people in the middle east need to be left alone to resolve their own problems? they don't want us there, they don't need us there. as long as they know, and they DO know that if they use nuclear weapons, it will be the last thing they do. why do you think that for all the prosthesizing and chest pounding over the last fifty years that we have never had an actual nuclear attack? even north korea that is run by lunatic jr. has never set off a bomb? it is because they are crazy not suicidal.

romney said that the people on this planet look to the united states to lead-why do we have to lead with an uzi in our hands? why can't we lead by example with an olive branch and a dove? i know we have to help protect isreal and i would never suggest we turn our backs on them, but right now today, iran is on the verge of imploding because of the sanctions put upon it. their defiance is a smoke screen and they are not stupid enough to believe that if they were to attack isreal that there would be no reprisal. we wouldn't even have to step foot in their country. we have nuclear submarines that could level their country in an hour. they know that.

the terrorists are religious fanatics and romney believes that we should involve ourselves in trying to push our agenda, including that ideal of manifest destiny, pushing our way of life unto others who don't want it. it is beginning to look more and more like the radical right in this country is trying to start another crusade.

the last thing we need is another holy war. i wonder sometimes if the radical religious is deliberately trying to start a middle east world war so they can bring about the armageddon, because of their delusion that God is going to descend from the skies and save them.

i wouldn't vote for romney if he had a halo circling his head. i would just assume it was another right wing trick.

    Chef Darrell,

Obama inherited a $1.3 trillion deficit and an economy shrinking at 8.5% (4th Qtr 2008). To cut deficits in time of such economic deterioration would have been exactly the worst thing anyone could have done.

To stimulate economic growth is what every single President since Hoover has done in the face of a recession. Every single one. It is the only way to end the recession quickly and Obama did it with little help from the plotting, obstructionist Republicans ending the recession by Summer 2009.

While the stimulus worked to quickly end downturn, Republicans badmouthed stimulus thus undermining consumer confidence which is a big variable in quick recoveries.

A 2nd round of stimulus as proposed by Obama and blocked by House republicans in 2010 would have spurred US economic growth back to 3-4% which would have rapidly reduced unemployment and as a result, increased tax revenues. Budget deficits would have been reduced quickly and cutbacks in government spending in a fuller employment, expanding economy would not have hurt economic growth much.

Tea Party and Republicans slowed the recovery. They prolonged the suffering of the unemployed. They deserve a pink slip from the American voter. They've earned it.

OBAMA and Democratic Congress 2012...............For America's future.

Mitt Romney's military policy: ensure that no other nation or extranational group will dare to oppose the agenda, interests, or values of the United States government out of fear that if they do, they will suffer violent, destructive reprisal.

That's not a new idea. It used to be called imperialism. Or tyranny. Today, it's called terrorism if it's a non-state entity doing it and neoconservatism if it's done by a government. In any case, it's a policy that writes off our ability to ever improve our standing in the opinion of the world and to instead make that irrelevant. It is an arrogrant approach, and very dangerous.

Obama inherited a $1.3 trillion deficit and an economy shrinking at 8.5% (4th Qtr 2008). To cut deficits in time of such economic deterioration would have been exactly the worst thing anyone could have done.

4th qtr 2008 was from July-Sep 2008 (assuming you're talking fiscal calendar)...before the election....so why then did Obama promise to reduce the deficit?

While the stimulus worked to quickly end downturn, Republicans badmouthed stimulus thus undermining consumer confidence which is a big variable in quick recoveries.

Ahhh yes, it's the republicans fault. The republicans weren't the ones who kept promising to rebuild the infrastructure, that was Obama. What part of the stimulus went to those (shovel ready) tax generating jobs? The republicans were, however, the ones cut out of the healthcare reform that took up the first 2 years of Obama's term. You remember, the plan that we had to pass to find out what was in it?

Had the president been more of a leader and less of a finger-pointing divider, we wouldn't even be discussing Romney's name.

A 2nd round of stimulus as proposed by Obama and blocked by House republicans in 2010 would have spurred US economic growth back to 3-4% which would have rapidly reduced unemployment and as a result, increased tax revenues

PAYGO rears its ugly head again. Obama signed it in 2010, but later proposed a big ol' unfunded stimulus before the ink was dry? And he is the "smartest guy in the room"?

This was a vote on “cloture”, which means to end debate so that an up-or-down vote can be taken. All but 5 Republicans voted no on ending the debate.

Jul 11__S.2237____Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act --- NO

This particular action was a vote on Reid's ammendment which was voted overwhelming NO by both parties. 80 rejected. Last action was on July 12th, another vote on “cloture”. Again, all but 4 Rep & 2 democrats voted no.

Jun 29__S.2237____Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act --- NO

Exact same bill as above. There was no vote on Jun 29th on this bill.

Jun 5___S.3240____Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act of 2012 --- NO

Bill Passed with 16 Rep voting Yes.

Dec 15__H.R.3630__Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2011 --- NO

This bill was introduced in the House by a Republican!!! Passed by the majority of Rep & Dems.

Enough of your non-sense, you don't even know who friggin introduced the bills in the first place, let alone who voted for them or against them. Go back and do your homework...

    clb,

The last Veterans jobs bill is still sitting waiting to be voted on and leaving many Vets uncovered for the almost 3 months that the republicans went home to campaign. Screw the Vets. but be sure to get re-elected.

Just like the Farm Bill that is sitting there and the farmers are not covered for corp insurance, crop subsidies etc. during this time so that the republicans can do Nothing. Do Nothing. The Huffington Press and Wall Street Journals have indicated that this House has produced and acted on the least legislation of any House in US history. So I did my homework and I get the A and you get the D or F!

    Take your pick!

saying Monday that the threat of conflict in the Middle East is greater than it was four years ago.

The further destabilizing in the Middle east began in 2003. Romney can say whatever he wants, but I was there. After we got rid of our lap dog Saddam, Iran and other groups became free to run amok.

This started long before Obama took office. The Bush self proclaimed Holy Crusade is what put us in this position we are seeing now with Iran.

The federal Bureau of Prisons has the authority to make the purchase of the unused state prison in Thomson, Ill. You need to school yourself on that.

      unusual but not illegal.

Bayllie: Despite what you might think, that looks very bad for the President. I find it odd that the only place he can move the prisoners to is his home state of Illinois. Second, we all know that the President did indeed stomp all over the rights of the 9/11 victims when he did that. Third, we all know he did it while going against Congress. Fourth, the person responsible for the Federal Bureau of Prisons is none other than Eric Holder( appointed by Obama)which was questioned during that ATF gunwalking scandal. Seems to me like the President is so corrupt that he is even into the Justice system when the DOJ claimed that those allegations were false.

Yet, we constantly hear on MSNBC about the president's transparency......... This looks like the media is protecting him more than you realize. This has nothing to do with Fox News....... I don't even watch Fox news..... but the fact that you keep bringing up Fox news makes we want to believe that you have nothing to defend the President with.

"It is the responsibility of our president to use America's great power to shape history — not to lead from behind, leaving our destiny at the mercy of events," Romney said.

Call it a gut feeling, but somehow I don't get the sense that our Founding Fathers would agree. George Washington and a slew of others warned us about getting involved in foreign entanglements. Funny, I don't see anywhere in the Constitution anything mandating that we MUST be the world's daycare provider.

Citizen Romney vacillates between an inept analysis ("But when we look at the Middle East today … it is clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office.") and outright illegal arms trade ("Romney said he would 'identify and organize those members of the opposition who share our values' in Syria, and arm them.")

And Sidekick Ryan thinks that concept of "foreign policy" is "what leadership looks like"???

All that's missing is John McCain singing "Bomb-bomb-bomb, bomb-bomb Iran" in the background to complete a tableau that's a recipe for greater instability and ensuing disaster.

Why not ask Mitt how many jobs he sent overseas for Bain and how much was the profits that were gained by him. Greed does that to you. Ask why we were losing 750,000 jobs a month when bush left office and we are now gaining 160,000 to 200,000 a month! 4.6 million jobs gained with Obama and over 7,000,000 lost by bush in the last year and a half of his term!

The demolabrats are crying about the prospect of another war as they prefer the Syrians die whole-sale. What is strange is how they supported obama circumventing a congressional vote to kill Libyians. Yea yea yea I heard it already " there were no boots on the ground '', however; mass death and destruction resulted in obama's UNCONSTITUTIONAL WAR against Libyia. Unless we are now dictated to by the UN congress members should have held the inept fool obama accountable.

This speech was disappointing. I expected more fire in his speech than a version of how Bush handled the middle east. This situation is a very bad reminder of the Nixon years when no matter how much the American people wanted our troops to come home immediately but we were stuck there because "powers that be" wanted us there regardless of the will of the people. Obama will not let us just leave the middle east pretending that we have FRIENDS there. Romney also says we have to stay there pretending that we have FRIENDS in the middle east. To be honest that speech was a downer. I want an ALL or NOTHING response. We either go to war which is total commitment and America agenda oriented or we have Peace which means we leave TODAY, lock, stalk and barrel. Here sadly Romney showed that he has the same blind spot as Obama. The closest thing to a friend in the middle east is Israel. Everyone hates us. When will America get it. If someone kept hurting me and spitting on me I would get the message that he/ she is not my friend. Why do politicians say someone is a friend who continually hurts us. Only politicians can turn an "open Shut" issue into a muddy mess.

        #1.130 - Mon Oct 8, 2012 5:36 PM EDT

I get it now, it makes perfect sense! Romney understands that what rescued our economy from the Great Depression was WW2, so to rescue our so-so economy now, he's going to start WW3!

Let's start with Syria & Iran, then maybe move on to Pakistan when our "friends" in power there finally lose control of the hostile Islamic population that hates our guts and burns our flag. Let's not forget North Korea.

A front line in the Middle East and another one in Asia-Pac. It will be almost like the good old days!

He does know how to stash his personal funds in foreign countries to avoid taxes. So he at least knows how to manipulate the system to his favor. But imagine if he was as rude to Foreign Leaders as he was to the Moderator the other night----that could not end well!

And his latest speech takes the cake/with icing---the one whereby he disses the Q&A session with kids because he doesn't have time to deal with children.

Yeeah he sure would be a great leader huh. He disses the kids because he doesn't have time for them while hiding funds over seas to avoid the American Way!!!!!!!!

All Rom is is that of a rich man who still wants to make his daddy happy while disrespecting any and everyone who gets in his way! The only thing Right about Mitt Romney is his ability to lean waaaaaaay right when he's talking to those he "hopes" to get donations from; like his 47% Dinner. But when "Debate Romney" shows up, he's the "Moderate Mitt." Romney is either a Chameleon, a Liar or Schizophrenic. Which is it?

Romney and Foreign Policy should not be used in the same sentence. Remember his self-imposed "World Tour" disaster in August? He went around pissing off every country he visited--the first stop being the London Olympics. And Mitt's "Therapy" horse? Mitt has NO SHAME.

Mitt said: "I'll increase Defense Spending." And, "I'll ARM Syria." And, "I'll stand up to Russia." You Go Boy! Mitt doesn't have a clue let alone a "Foreign Policy." Nitt Witt Mitt just talks down President Obama, who, by the way, DID what the Repub's under Bush COULDN'T do. Or, WOULDN'T do is more like it.

Mitt "thinks" he aced the first debate--but lies don't count, Mitt. Poor Mitt doesn't even realize he cast his die-and that his "Shapeshifting" days are numbered.

Let me make one thing clear to all my fellow commentators, liberal and conservative, on this vine: this is not 1980. In 1980, America was threatened (psychologically, not physically) by both Islamic fundamentalists and Communist incursions in Afghanistan and Latin America. We were in the midst of the Cold War but also with an Islamic fundamentalist twist. Now, we are not faced by a single monolithic nation or alliance that sought our destruction; we are faced by a number of enemies, all of them relatively tiny, all of them based somehow on religion or history. What we did immediately after 9/11 was a mistake; we should not have invaded Iraq based on rumors about WMDs or blitzed Afghanistan because of their Taliban-led government. We should have gotten a coalition of allies and respected nations to rethink our policy in the Middle East, taken a united effort to fight off terrorists, and seek a "reset" of our relations with our Middle Eastern counterparts. We also should not have discarded some of our most cherished freedoms (I'm talking about YOU, "Patriot" Act) in the name of security, even though security does have a price. What Romney is proposing is practically nothing new: he proposes to tighten economic sanctions on Iran, even though Obama has already done that to great effect; he proposes to express support for Israel, even though Obama has already done that. Romney essentially has no foreign policy; all of his ideas have either already been done or a rehash of the Bush policies (more unilateralism, more defense spending, feeding the military-industrial complex, etc). My fellow Americans, if you want to go back to the Bush administration and its unilateral bull@!$%#, by all means vote for Mitt Romney. Now, if you want a shot, not a very big one but one nonetheless, to dramatically alter American foreign policy and reverse course from the imperialistic policies of the past half-century, you HAVE to vote for Obama. At least he opposes acting like an armed and drunk Texas cowboy...

I see you are changing your story. You go from

OBAMA DIDN'T GET CONGRESS' APPROVAL TO BUY THIS PRISON. HE BASICALLY DISREGARDED CONGRESS

( more evidence he doesn't know the difference between the legislative and executive branches....... hint SARAH).

          to

Bayllie: Despite what you might think, that looks very bad for the President.

huge difference since originally you were implying Obama disregarded Congress.

Again, he does not need Congress' approval as you first stated.

Does it look bad? No. I wrote it's "unusual" because it is always easier to "ask Congress for permission" because if president doesn't, Congress can make the entire process difficult.

But we don't have to worry about the Congressional Republicans making Obama's life difficult, do we? They have been doing it since the evening of January 20, 2009.

I find it odd that the only place he can move the prisoners to is his home state of Illinois.

That wasn't the plan from day one - but you seem to forget that the reason it never happened is because he whole process was blocked by those who criticize Obama for not keeping his promise. CAN YOU SAY HYPOCRITES? They want it both ways.

what did you expect? When then-candidate Obama stated he was going to close Gitmo, what did everyone think was going to happen? Kill the prisoners? Release them? Or move them to a prison on a US soil?

Everyone knew that. So please don't act like you are surprised!

Second, we all know that the President did indeed stomp all over the rights of the 9/11 victims when he did that.

That's such a bullsh*t. You wrote 100 families oppose it. 3000 people died on 9/11 so let's assume 3000 families lost someone. You will always have people who opposed something. And to write that Obama is "stomping" all over rights of the 9/11 victims is crap. There are plenty of 9/11 fmilies who oppose the “island outside the law” where terrorism suspects could be detained without process and interrogated without restraint. Guantanamo has been a catastrophic failure on every front. It brings no closure. People are detained without any kind of process to either convict them or release them.

Gitmo is a failure. PERIOD. It's time to convict those who are responsible for the deaths of American citizens. Keeping them locked up without finding the truth if some or all are even involved is pointless and is against everything this country's Constitution stands for - even for those who were born elsewhere.

Clwyd: Yeah.... that's why corporate America has to keep on sending our jobs oversees, right?

you seem to comment on topics you have no clue about. Corporations offshore jobs because labor is cheap (not cheaper -CHEAP) in other countries, they don't have to pay taxes - sometimes ever if they play their cards right, and they get to expense out the cost of moving their opperation elsewhere.

The current tax code rewards all that - something that need to be fixed. And even though baby steps were attempted to be taken, the Republicans keep blocking the small changes in our tax code. Why not reward companies for bringing jobs back? Why not reduce their taxes?

The corporate America offshores jobs for one reason: PROFIT. They want to rake profits of 2012 but want cheap labor of 1912. On top of that, while they don't want to pay US wages, they want the US consumers to pay the top price to pay for the Chinese crap.

If you want to be supportive of the orporations' right to make profit, go to your boss tomorrow and tell him/her that you are willing to give up your OT, holidays, vacations, breaks, health insurance, etc. Otherwise you are part of the problem why corporations offshore jobs.

          @Mike,

Clever rhyming poem by Chris D. but he doesn't have the facts right. war on women? war on America? REALLY? Pres. Bush signed the initial TARP and I think we would be in worse shape otherwise. If you want to be mad at someone about that then I guess you can be mad at Pres. Bush but things were spinning out of control. Pres.- elect Obama did ask him to sign for additional funds so Pres. Bush may have signed it but with Pres. Obama's full support, of course. In the end when the ratings agencies are not correctly rating investment instruments, you're going to have a disaster. Pres. Bush said he would do it again when asked 2 years ago.

Of course, very few people, DEMO or REPUB know that Pres. Bush signed TARP into law because the REPUBS managed to convince so many people that it was the Dems who did the bailing out.

I believe Romney said in the debate he could not say how he would make his proposals come about until he sat down with leaders from all parties and worked out solutions "together".

How can he give anything other than an outline void of specifics until he sits down with those responsible and works out the issues "together"? One big lesson learned from President Obama is that going it on your own and shutting down the opposition as obstructionists is the WRONG path! The best practice is to find the common ground (thank you President Clinton for that model, as well as an honorable mention to Ronald Reagan working with the Dem's).

The Willard goes on to criticise Obama for not giving guns to the Syrian rebels, then crisicises Obama for the lawlessness that resulted in a safe area for the terrorists that attacked us in Libya because the new government there does not have full control of that country's security. Does Willard seriously think that Syrian, which has a volitile sectarian stew that Libya doesn't have, won't also be a base for these types of attacks while the new government is attempting to gain control over the whole country?

Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama of leading a rudderless foreign policy, saying Monday that the threat of conflict in the Middle East is greater than it was four years ago.

----------------------So the most intelligent thing is for us to introduce even more weapons into that part of the world. Brilliant idea Mutt. Next war I suggest we only send the sons and daughters of our rethugli-con politicians. Maybe that would change their view of "there's never been a war they haven't liked".

You say Romney is hellbent on starting a war. Ask yourselves a question. If Iran gets a Nuke and decides to use it (easily crazy enough to do it) will Obama sit by and let that go unpunished? Answer: Absolutely not. Result: war anyway.

Another question: Will the current policies ever prevent Iran from getting a Nuke. Sanctions? Maybe,......... probably not. "Hope and change? " Just hoping Iran doesn't get a Nuke is very scarry indeed.

"But when we look at the Middle East today … it is clear that the risk of conflict in the region is higher now than when the president took office."

Romney's solution ship more and heavier weapon into Syria.

Much of the speech dealt with the recent outbreak of violence in Libya, where a siege on a U.S. consulate — waged apparently by terrorists — left four Americans dead, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Romney conveniently forgets that his party the GOP cut the State Department's budget forcing the embassies to rely on local protection!

Obama's decision to withdraw the last "surge" troops from Afghanistan last month a "politically timed retreat," Romney would only have kept those troops there a few months longer, through the height of the fighting season.

His vast experience fighting premarital sex and alcohol use in France during the Vietnam War qualifies him to make military decisions about the fighting season.

He's too busy playing golf, or running around raising money...he gives speeches to college students because they haven't been out in the work force yet. They are more easily influenced. "Romney conveniently forgets that his party the GOP cut the State Department's budget forcing the embassies to rely on local protection!"

Yes, but in Libya, the "local protection" consisted most likely of militias since that is what the new government of Libya is relying on for its own protection. The new government there has no police force or army yet so they have to rely on the armed militias from the revolution for their protection. That's a bad situation.

The serviceman in charge of security in Libya begged for additional people to protect the consulate. The administration said they would think about it. He said protecting the Americans was like playing the piano with two fingers. Obama is so aloof, arrogant, and out of touch. Has been from the beginning. Read "The Price of Politics" by Woodward.

"President Obama's unprecedented directive to Attorney General Holder to circumvent Congress to purchase Thomson prison is deeply troubling," Wolf said. "It directly violates the clear objection of the House Appropriations Committee and goes against the bipartisan objections of members in the House and Senate, who have noted that approving this request would allow Thomson to take precedence over previously funded prisons in Alabama, Mississippi, West Virginia and New Hampshire. Notably, it also flies in the face of concerns raised by scores of family members of 9/11 victims, who signed a letter in July objecting to the purchase of this prison.

"At an alarming $165 million, the size of this request is unprecedented,
he continued. "The purchase also violates the Obama administration's own policy against funding earmark requests, as the Justice Department designated Senator Durbin's request for the Thomson acquisition. Moreover, the timing of this $165 million windfall to the president's home state of Illinois, just weeks before election day, is suspect.

"Most importantly, I am concerned that this purchase will set in motion the administration's plan to close the terrorist detention facility in Guantanamo Bay by transferring terrorist detainees to U.S. maximum security prisons, like Thomson. One example of this ongoing effort is the request of Senator Durbin's colleague, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Diane Feinstein, to the Government Accountability Office to conduct a survey of U.S. prisons that could be used to hold Guantanamo Bay detainees, which is ongoing.

"Today's actions are just the latest in series of disconcerting moves by this Justice Department, including its handling of the Fast and Furious Operation, allowing nepotism in hiring, its questionable dismissal of voting rights cases and the politicization of decisions that benefit special interest groups," Wolf concluded. "This may be the most disreputable Justice Department in modern history."

            Rogers agreed:

"The Obama administration has been trying for years to open Thompson prison in order to transfer terrorists from Guantanamo Bay onto U.S. soil," he said. "Congress has vehemently denied this request and has refused funding for the prison at every step of the way. The American people do not want Guantanamo detainees in the U.S., and should not have to tolerate the risk of these terrorists residing in their backyards. This back-door move by the Obama Administration to open Thompson and reject the will of Congress and the American people is dangerously irresponsible, and will be met with the full and unfettered opposition of the Appropriations Committee."

Wolf and Rogers were joined in their opposition to the funding request by bipartisan members of both the House and the Senate, including: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Wolf's Senate counterpart on the CJS Subcommittee; Sens. Richard Shelby (R-AL), Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Thad Cochran (R-MS); Rep. Charlie Bass (R-NH); the entire House Alabama delegation; and more than 100 families of victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Obama can't even deal with an opposition party in Congress much less terrorists and foreign leaders. He seems to like the celebrity aspect of being the president but can't handle the rest of it. Looks like "elevating political discourse" has now regressed back into gutter level Chicago politics and demonizing Romney from here to election day. Losers make excuses, winners don't have to.

The President biggest problem is that he is a loner serving in a job not fit for loners. He barely has any relationships with Democrat politicians, let alone Republicans. He has no real pals or connections in foreign lands. Think of effective leaders like Clinton and Reagan...they each had domestic and international leaders on speed dial and acyually spent time with these people.

Mr. Obama has obviously been too keenly intent on getting to the next high school gymnasium, Hollywood fundraiser, or softball-tossing TV chuckle-fest to waste his time trying to act like some type of leader.

Those in the House and the rest of the congress that want him out of office so they can turn this country into a Neo Third World with plenty of cheap labor that will always, under the Rule of the Far Right, owe everything and own nothing, are the ones responsible for getting in the way of a chance for real freedom and a thriving economy.

Romney is beating the "war drums."

Romney's war mongering is a typical Republican "safety net."

The right does not have a viable, broad-based equitable economic, political and social platform for America. Thus, what do these Fascists do? To distract the our citizens from their lack of substantive policies, the GOP starts new wars. Mitt will increase defense spending. If other citizen's young daughters and sons are needlessly killed in combat, it is of no concern to Mitt.

            Romney has 5 sons.

Yet, not one of his son's is enlisted in the military.

Biden: His son is in the military.

            Jennifer, New York

When did Obama wear the uniform?

            Jennifer,

When did Romney wear the uniform?

To avoid the military draft, in the 1960's Mitt jettisoned off to Europe.

If it wasn't for Hillary Clinton, our foreign policy would be in much worse shape.

Hillary Clinton does deserve praise. She is a great Secretary of State. She is an accomplished leader.

Please tell this forum, then, why it is that the right hates Hillary Clinton?

During the 2012 Olympics, Romney visited Great Britain.

            What happened?

About Britain, Mitt made embarrassing statements. When he realized that he had blundered, he suddenly left the United Kingdom and scampered to another country.

            He's too busy playing golf

Obama's predecessor racked up for more vacations.

            running around raising money

The Koch brothers, Rove and the GOP have made sure that Romney's campaign chest is "well oiled."

he gives speeches to college students

Romney wants to dump millions of college students from the Pell Grant program.

Obama cares about our youth. He fought an arduous political battle to keep student loan interest rates low.

because they haven't been out in the work force yet.

The GOP has blocked Obama's numerous jobs bills.

If our college graduates cannot obtain jobs it is because of the GOP's right-wing collapsed economy and the party's nefarious political obstruction.

            This guy is lazy,

You are calling our president lazy because he is African-American.

            Obama's achievements include:

            - preventing America from sinking into a massive economic depression

            - decreasing our unemployment rate to 7.8%

            - enacting The Affordable Care Act

            - bailing out the banking industry

            - bailing out the automobile industry

            - enacting the Lilly Ledbetter act

            - scaling down 2 wars

Your definition of lazy is "tainted."

            arrogant

Obama is a person of color who has confidence.

Jennifer, pompously, you have misinterpreted Obama's confidence as arrogance.

            doesn't know anything...

During the debate, Romney called conclusions that his own staff had politically molded, "studies."

If Mitt's platform was intellectual and viable he would not have to keep "flip-flopping."

            The debate proved it.

During the debate, about our economy, health care and education, Obama gave the American people facts.

The debate proved Romney will say anything to become president. He showed himself to be a liar who does not have a viable plan for the middle class, the poor and for this country.

Obama gets "cut off", because the timer on his teleprompter ran out, and he cannot form a coherent statement, unless someone is telling him what to say. Don't believe me? Re-watch the debate. The man was helplessly lost. Indecisive, unsure, and stumbling.

            That's it huh? teleprompter...

Mitt Romney just declared his intentions to continue GW Bushes (Cheney/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz) work. Listen to what the man is saying, and not just in the middle east. He's talking about Latin American and Asia as well. He hired Neo-Conservative foreign policy aides, in fact, the same aides that worked for GW Bush. He's funded by Karl Rove...he is Neo-Conservative.

Hey Tea Party; remember how much you railed against GW Bush? Guess who you're voting for? After all you've done...look at your real enemy. It's not the Democrats...it's the Neo-Conservatives and their war/borrowing policies...and you're helping them make a comeback.

Romney has no business discussing anything. He is still a private citizen and should keep his mouth shut right now. No other candidate running against an incumbent President. Wish he was as adament about showing his taxes as he is to kissing up to his "base". I expect him to start wearing cowboy boots anyday. What a joke!

Romney is getting security information now. So, he thinks he's an expert. Don't get me wrong, he has people that do polls and focus groups. The man doesn't say anything that's not tested for effect.

However, that's the problem, he's held so many different positions on everything, in the end, you don't know what he stands for.

The Problem is that 17 of his 22 advisors are from the Bush Administration and someone above said it correctly, Republicans like war because it lines their pockets. They don't care about all the young people they put in harms way. And those young people are starting to realize that. We have spent the last 11 years at war and we need a break like for the next 50 years.

The comment about the windows was a joke.....obviously. And where has he said he would start a nuclear war? There rarely is any real discussion here because of the nutty rants. Concerned about whether a Romney has been in the service but no concern that Clinton never was. Concerned that the sons were not in the service but no concern that Chelsea was not. Always seems like different standards. Where is Obama's service?

The real way we will get into war is because Syria is shelling Turkey and Turkey is responding. Turkey is a NATO ally so who we by treaty have to support. What are you all going to be saying when the very crazy Iran does develop and use a nuclear bomb? These are people who will not hesitate to use the bomb.

Romney should tell us about his foreign policy experience at Bain (toured Chinese factory and praise how they do it with fences and guard towers).

Romney should tell us about his foreign policy experience as Governor of Massachusetts (I can see Connecticut from my house?)

Romney should tell us about his foreign policy experience from tax avoidance schemes. Switzerland and Cayman Islands.

He does have foreign policy experience. Now, if he could tell us how we can shut down the international tax havens, he'd get a lot more votes.

Come on Mitt, campaign on shutting down those tax havens used by the rich to avoid taxes, international crime organizations and drug lords to launder money, and dictators to hide their stolen money.

Your first statement is actually accurate. Under NATO Article 5, an attack on a Member nation is an attack on all Member nations. Your second statement is dribble, you should probably check the sides of our mouth for saliva. Iran could nuke another country eventually, if they are allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. The problem is that with their limited technology, odds are that they would cease to exist just before their nuke hit. No telling how many Ohio class nuclear submarines we have off the Persian Gulf but it would take approximately 8-10 minutes to deliver complete destruction to the entire country. It's possible they could do serious damage to some country in the middle-east. They however, would likely never know about it.

What did he say he would do differently than Obama is already doing? Other than provide heavy arms in Syria which could lead to those arms being used against us by terrorists.

Part of the reason the embassy attack was so successful was that in Libya we weren't able to get back all those RPG's etc.

Every nation is trying to gain more power and more influence throughout the world. It is human nature to want to get more power and control. Every other country is trying to increase their power and decrease America’s power. You can not blame them for their actions. They are just looking out for their best interests. It should concern everybody when almost every nation on the planet would like for a Democrat to be president and will actively help them to win elections. These other countries know that a Democrat in power means a weaker United States of America and more chance for them to increase their power. Do you really think these other countries that are both friendly and enemies of the United States want a Democrat in power because they think it will make them less powerful?

Obama received a huge endorsement from Iran's Ahmadinejad while he was in the United States for the United Nations. That should scare all AMERICANS! When you have a crazy man like Ahmadinejad who states he does not want to make certain comments because that could affect the American election, that is HUGE! Do we really want a president that Ahmadinejad hopes wins the election. Obviously Ahmadinejad knows that Iran gets stronger if Obama is a president and Iran gets weaker if Romney is president. Easy choice to vote for Romney over a current president that is backed by a tyrant.

Thank you for posting this. You have done a much better job of illustrating the difference between the fear based response of the conservative brain and the logic based response of the progressive brain. Note the comment "Every other country is trying to increase their power and decrease America's power" (they're all out to get me). Then there's the statement "a Democrat in power means a weaker United States of America" even though evidence from past conflicts disputes this claim (when provided actual evidence, emotion overrules).

Obama received a huge endorsement from Iran's Ahmadinejad while he was in the United States for the United Nations.

What is the truth? The truth is that Ahmadinejad has criticized both Obama and Romney. If you closely listened to Romney's speech, he was careful not to commit himself to anything Obama has not committed to. The fact is that Romney is trying to differentiate himself from Obama on foreign policy with very little wiggle room. About the best he can do is attack on the Defense budget. Anyone who actually understands the current budget knows the Defense cut driver is not Obama, it's the Sequestration. Look it up. It's the agreement forced by the Tea Party freshmen in Congress to allow the approval of an increased debt ceiling. So if you want to blame someone...blame the Tea Party.

This is not your place to open your mouth, Romney. Just because you pretend like you are the president does not make it so.

How about you either send your own draft-dodging sons over there first, or take your war-mongering hate speech elsewhere.

And who's going to pay for the war you keep trying to drum up, Romney? Hmmmmm???

Hello....when has there been a draft since Mitt's sons have been alive? The oldest son is like late thirties, early 40's.

Romney, like his friend Dick Cheney had FIVE chances to go to war in the 60's and 70's. They each took FIVE DEFERMENTS and Romney went to FRANCE to soaked up the beach for 2 and a half years.

Remember there was no draft when President Obama was born or of eligible age - Republicans are constantly saying the President did not serve - well, with no draft and no wars being waged, there was no reason for a draft to be used. On the other hand, Mitt Romney was a draft dodger - using his Mormon missionary work as a major excuse. Many young men of that time used college, good grades or their economic status as ways to avoid the draft while many of their generation died - hardly fair. One thing you can say about John McCain and his sons is that they have served their nation. I'm not saying that makes anyone more or less eligible to be our president - just making a comparison of the kinds of people in high places. Dick Cheney also used many excuses for his deferments - Bill Clinton used his education, etc. as his reason.

Those of you complaining that Romney never served and Obama is too young for the draft, here is a question. Since we no longer have a draft, why are so many serving? Do not use the draft or lack of one to condemn only one candidate for not serving. Do any of you think Malia or Sasha are ever going to enlist?

Have you ever heard of Sequestration? You probably should look it up seeing as how you're trying to find someone to blame for Defense cuts. You see, Defense (and the rest of the federal government) is due to suffer an approximate 20% across the board cut because the Freshmen Republican members of the House (Tea Party) refused to pass the debt ceiling increase without the cuts. Remember the Super Committee (that really wasn't super)? They're failure to find cuts resulted in implementation of the Sequester. You want to blame someone, blame the Tea Party.

Republican presidential invasions has cost over 7,000 American servicemen deaths in our 2 latest wars. Obama's measured strikes against those who declare they mean us harm most would consider more responsible than Romney's stated words that he'd both invade Iran and possibly Syria seems a bit more aggressive to me. Romney's only salvation is the fact he's not yet able to pursue his policies. We intend to see he never is on Nov. 6th. Rational people don't need to see if Romney means what he say's, we take his word for it.

The neocons said they wanted democracy in the middle east. Democracy has come - in abundance. What the neocons don't like is that this is true democracy - where the extremists sometimes win. What the GOP neocons really want is Western puppets. They just want new faces on the strongmen. They want strongmen who believe in free trade and markets. They could care less if the masses are truly represented. What Obama said, for a change, was in effect, "Take your democracy and struggle with it - it's your democracy." Real democracy scares the @!$%# out of the neocons. They want a rigged game. Obama is just an unusual American leader who thought he would pay more than lip service to the concept of democracy.

Now on Iran, Romney just continues to lie. Obama is clearly committed to keeping the bomb away from Iran. The Iranian economy is in shambles - thanks to extremely tough sanctions. Moreover, there has clearly been some nice sabotage of the Iranian nuclear program. Somebody blew up those scientists. Nobody is "playing" or "diddling" on Iran. But Romney just blusters on - with no credibility.

Mitt Romney's money has more foreign experience than Mitt himself. Draft dodging in France is hardly considered foreign policy experience. You sound silly supporting a man who would rather draft-dodge and hold his money overseas than to stand up for his own country!

Obama actually follows what Bush promised, not playing the worlds policemen. Republicans consider not involving ourselves in every problem the world has as a weakness. Most of us do not.

Bush promised a humble foreign policy with no nation building. He had criticized the Clinton-Gore Administration for being too interventionist: "If we don't stop extending our troops all around the world in nation-building missions, then we're going to have a serious problem coming down the road. And I'm going to prevent that."[1]

Now stand up and say that you are just another occupy wallstreet protester with nothing better to do and leave the Republican name off it!

If you're a republican, then Michelle Obama has always been proud of this country. DECEIT! Just like all the democrats. Twist and manipulate the truth and buy votes. Both parties are despicable, but the democrats and Obama are the worst I have seen. If you can't tell a lie, just make up something. Anything but the truth. You people hate religion so much but liberal theology is the most damnable religion on the earth. Islam and liberalism are both forced religions and full of lies and hypocrisy.

I don't care if you HATE OBAMA, vote for him anyway unless you want to begin the downward spiral into endless military conflicts again. We're just now starting to pull out of the LAST GOP-created downward spiral... let's not do it AGAIN.

Please... BE SMART. This will needlessly kill more Americans, and only profit the already filthy rich military complex... while doing NOTHING to move our economy forward.

There was a time and people when what you post made sense. Henry Ford paid his workers $5 a day when the average wage was $1 a day so his workers could buy what they produced. Now you have corporate robber barons who cry about minimum wage, environmental and safety laws holding back their success. The days of the wealthy using their wealth to prop up and propel the middle class is long gone. Now it's make every penny at any cost to pad offshore accounts.

The VAST MAJORITY of people who fight them are the underprivileged low socioeconomic lower class who enlist, reenlist, and re-reenlist when the army dangles humongous signing bonuses in their faces. Bring back the draft and let's see how much more war this country can take.

jfrech - My choice would be that any President that deliberately sends us into war has to first have THEIR children drafted and serving on the front line of that war. Only fair. If it's important enough for our men and women to lose their lives then it's clearly important enough for the Preident's children to risk their lives - as well as the children of any congressmen and women who vote for the war.

My guess is we would be fighting in very few wars if this was the requirement.

Well KimV, he obviously believes that he is above EVERYONE else, including the President. Any PAST Governor that, without congressional approval or being appointed by the President to do so, takes it upon himself to go to another country such as Israel and tells them that "he" would not be opposed to any preempted attacks on Iran by them (Israel), then makes promises that the US would protect them afterward, is clearly showing his unfaithfulness to US foreign policies. This shows that he has no respect for the government in which he wants to rule. And above all, he has violated his allegiance to his country. And although he himself did not wage war on the US, his actions and/or statements could very well force the US into an avoidable war with Iran. Therefore he should be charged with treason.

$2 Trillion for a war he's just itching to start. This is precisely how the deficit grew to such high levels in the first place. But Mitt wants to blame Obama. He's not even close to the White House Lawn and he's already to up the ante for another war. Wait until he discloses everything he wants to cut in order to pay for it and those tax loopholes he and his homies on Wall Street enjoy. There is a reason why he hasn't disclosed those cuts -- but wait until Thursday and next week when Biden & Obama force Mitt to show his hand. He lied like hell last week because it's a tried and true debate tactic -- to spin so many untuths that your opponent -- in an effort to call you on them -- would, as a result, not be able to express his own policies. And, when you sound like you're holding a board meeting, spewing out numbers and terms the average American can't even comprehend, the dumb ones think he's smart and knows what he's talking about when in fact it would be impossible to do all of the things he suggests without causing everybody but the rich to suffer. I want to hear how he thinks he can create 12M jobs. Probably by privatizing everything, but then again, this is how he would keep his gazillionaire friends happy and in good shape. If the rich created jobs, what's stopping them? He is scary as hell and being President is the one thing he hasn't accomplished. This is about his ego. Not America, and especially it's inhabitants. He's a hypocrite and he has fooled his base who doesn't seem to know they're voting against their own best interest. But then, that's what Mitt is hoping for. That they're too ignorant to research on their own, that they rely on him and Fox news for the truth. As they see it.

Mitt won't tell his approach or how he plans to raise the 5 trillion needed because as soon as he does, he's stepping on someones toes (Middle class = 95%, listen up), and he can't get into the white house without us. I would submit how can we debate honesty and truth of any person running for office , all persons fabricate the facts to suit their agenda . Mr. Romney's past actions are those of a greed-driven sociopath who does not care at all about people other than the ones that he can manipulate to feed his greed.

Mr. Romney practiced for weeks on his 45 minute or so "debate" monologue, which is no achievement that any person of average intelligence can do. But it is clear from unscripted dialogues that Mr. Romney cannot think well. He has already blundered in dialogues with foreign leaders. A man like that cannot be trusted as commander-in-chief.

Terry: Politicians are going to say what they think the public wants to hear. A lot of people thought when the President was elected that he would follow thru on his promise of change. If almost 4 years of high unemployment and misery is change, I'll settle for a decent paying job.

We need to vote everyone out in November:Democrat and Republican because the economy is in the toilet right now and I'm afraid if the President is re-elected America will be in the sewer with no hope of recovery. I will not vote for more of the same but truly both parties sux.

Nick, there are a lot more issues to debate than the ones you posted. Being able to pick and choose exactly what you post is no different than fabricating the facts. However, as long as you want to debate issues based on fact, can you please explain in full why Romney, in his last full month of governorship, only had a 39% approval rating? Just wondering.

By the way, Bain needed a federal bailout and Romney took taxpayer dollars to "save" the scandal-plagued SLC Olympics. Guess what he did with that 1.3 billion in taxpayer money for the Olympics? In apparent violation of his own ethics rules, he handed out contracts to campaign contributors, friends and companies that he had done business with or upon whose boards he sat. Yes, that includes Staples. John McCain called this "pork-barrel spending."

The only thing he proposed that is different than what the current administration is doing is sending arms to Syrian rebels - an old strategy that would create exactly the same dynamic we are dealing with today in Afghanistan.

We have a choice between two men, neither of whom have served in the military, and one of whom actively pursued deferment despite his support for the Vietnam war. If the CIC is going to be someone with no military experience, I prefer they be cautious about sending other people's children into harm's way.

His complaints about the tensions between Obama and Netanyahu are meaningless since Israel will likely have early elections next year and just as likely Netanyahu will not the PM after that.

I agree. Furthermore, there may be tension between Obama and Netanyahu, but significantly more Israeli leadership had expressed their approval of Obama even going as far as to say they've never had an administration that worked better with them. Netanyahu is on his way out; Israeli's have had enough of his chest beating war-mongering.

Scumbag Republicans who just want to see all nations under the thumb of the U.S. Why is it that Republicans hate so many people in the world? Bring all our troops back home and quit trying to be the "World Police Force". Close our boarders and the next time one of our Ambassadors is executed in a foreign country, send a B-1 Bomber with an atomic bomb over to flatten the capital of that country and drop a note saying "F_ck You!". But don't send troops just to die!

I agree dude. I am tired of war. It seems that is all the Republican Party wants to do is go to war. I feel this is what they want with Iran as well. They do not give a dam of the American people dying and the destruction that war causes. It is very sad that they do not value the lives of the American people. They want to act like there concerned about the deficit but there tax decrease for the rich and military budget increase proves otherwise.

This is a war that is pitting values against each other and will happen sooner or later. It is much better sooner while Iran is small and does not have a nuke to use on anyone. Religious fanatics are the cancer to the civilized world. You go in now and cut the head off or you wait and it will cost millions of more lives later. Just like WWII.

If anyone thinks any Western nation, the US included, can change what is happening in the Middle East they are sadly mistaken. Romney must think there is some magic bullet that will allow him to immediately stop these centuries old conflicts of interest; either that, or he is so deluded he thinks the American people are ready for another conflict that would make Iraq and Afghanistan look like picnics. He just doesn't get it, but it doesn't stop him pandering to his base.

I watched Jon Stewart interview the King of Jordan (King Abdullah II) a week or so ago and King Abdullah made more sense out of the issue than I've heard in a long time. He said that getting Israel and Palestine to settle their decades old dispute is the best way to get things in the Middle East to settle down and to get Iran's nuclear ambitions under control. He said until that happens it will be Muslims fighting everyone else, especially Israel, to defend the Muslims in Palestine. If course it wouldn't solve everything, but it would help immensely.

What's hilarious is these "telebloggers" actually think there snide remarks serve a purpose.

                                  Pitiful. Absolutely pitiful.

Romney is such a deceiving liar, I turn a deaf ear, I don't believe anything he says. Romney is funded primarily by the those who are going to take over our democracy completely if Romney gets elected.

No Jennifer, sounds an awful lot like the Romney I have come to know. Did you see him on Meet the Press talking about Obama Care, if you did you know why most people feel like he does not know what he wants. First of all he said he would not repel all of Obama Care he would keep some of it, mind you he has said he would repel it, when reports called his camp they all said oh no he will repel it, so which is it, not to mention in the debate he said he would replace it, with what, the same health care he had when he was governor, you know what that means right. Then about the 47%, first he saids he didn't put it elegantly enough, then he saids a couple days later, oh no I do care about those people, which is it. This is Romney the person you would like to be in the White House, the flip flopper, the person you can not trust. And also he will not give the american people certain infomation that its their right to know, like the loopholes he would close to set off the 5 trillion dollars in tax deductions.

Now tell me what Obama has flip flopped about, go ahead.

Gee Lu-2005066, it seems to me that Obama doesn't have a foreign policy at all. He has thrown his allies under a bus. Mubarak, Israel and he has lost all cred with South America. I voted for him but quite honestly he as done nothing at all, and is a disaster as President of the USA. Unemployment is ridiculous and HE NOW COUNTS THE PART TIME JOBS as joining the employed and they don't count the people who have received the max benefits anymore as unemployed. What has Obama flipped flopped on? How about guantanemo bay? How about the freign policy? Where is the jobs and a brighter future of America? What hasn't he flip flopped on is the better question?

Are you better off now or were you better off 4 years ago? Everybody I know was better off 4 years ago. If you are President of the USA you should lead by example and not be wishy washy. Obama has been a major failure in his 4 years in the White House. Not one of his campaign promises were kept, not one.

The pres has tried to improve things for us ALL with no help from teh GOP. How can you expect to accomplish much with half the congress determined to sacrifice the country before allowing the Pres any success.

Hey Joe. Were you a bully in your youth? If not did you know one? How do people deal with a bully? I'll tell you they wait till he turns his back then take a shot at him. Scraed of him but no respect for him.

"identify and organize those members of the opposition who share our values" America has been looked at as a bully in the world for too long. Commnets like he one above from Willard show that he has that same bully attitude. President Obama has shown some respect for differing cultures and by doing so we are looked at more favorably around the world. I am married to a former resident alien and now 20 yr US citizen. We hear rhe feelings from her family. It is not hate from them but showing a little respect would be appreciated and eliminate their feeling of distrust for our government.

Romney does not need a teleprompter. His speaches and remarks are delivered with ease and confidence unlike the incoherent speeches that our Preisdent makes. Just listen closely to him when he is not using a teleprompter and he seldom formulates a complete sentence; it's made up of a bunch of phrases jumbled together just like his half truths.

Maybe he wouldn't have so many foot and mouth episodes if he used a teleprompter more. Making speeches are easy if you merely craft your message to appeal to the people you're talking to no matter how close or far they are to his positions.

Don't need a teleprompter as long as you can remember your lies...Willard can't even do that. He flip flopped completely from statements made all the way up to the debate! As far as not being able to form a complete sentence?...Bush was the master at that!

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Its my belief that Romney, the shape shifter has gone from liberal to

conservative so many times,he cannot remember his positions on anything. Watch You tube "Extreme Mitt Romney Collection" Got to see it!. Now,he wants to get into foreign policies. How about war with UK.

He did a great job at the Olympics.
