NBC's Richard Lui takes a look at how the Asian-American vote is affecting the 2012 presidential campaign.
There are plenty of different voter groups for campaigns to court during this presidential election and, this year, Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders could impact the outcome in a significant way. In what has been a tight race, a relatively minor investment in these voters could pay large dividends for President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney.
There are three characteristics to consider about this slice of the electorate:
Swing State Population Levels
First, Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders have reached tipping-point population levels in battleground states.
For example, in Florida, Asian-Americans (single and mixed race) are 3 percent of the population, according to the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice -- small, but Obama won the state by just 2.5 percentage points in 2008. In Nevada, Asian-Americans are 9 percent of the population; Obama won by 12.4 percentage points. And in Virginia, where they are 7 percent; Obama won by 6.3 percentage points.
Another way to look at it is to total the popular margin of victory Obama had in 2008 in the nine NBC News battleground states. That’s almost 1.6 million votes. The Asian-American population in those states in 2010 was 2.3 million. After removing children under the age 18, or about 25 percent of the population, the number of Asian-Americans in those states is greater than Obama’s 2008 margin of victory in these crucial states.
Recommended: On day of data, Romney turns personal
Though 100 percent turnout and voting unanimity is highly unlikely, Virginia and North Carolina epitomize the opportunity. Until Virginia swung blue in 2008, Republican candidates hadn't lost the state since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. In North Carolina, up until 2008, Democrats had won only one in the previous 10 elections; Obama eked out a win by only 14,000 votes. In cases like these, smaller voting blocks, like Asian-Americans tilt the outcome
Undecideds
A second characteristic to consider: Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders this year are over four times more likely to be undecided than the average voter, according to the National Asian American Survey. Jon Stewart from “The Daily Show” joked, after all the press and debate to date, you’d have to basically live in a cave not to have been able to make a choice by now. So is it that Asian-Americans are four times more aloof when it comes to politics? Though they do register to vote at a lower rate than average, 2012 is different.

Sixty-two percent of them voted for Obama four years ago. But this year, the economy continues to be the biggest issue in the campaign and Asian Americans who own businesses are considering their options.
Democrat Haresh Bhungalia is undecided. “You have one candidate who wants to raise taxes, which I think is appropriate – I think that that's necessary in order for us to get back on track. And then we've got one candidate talking about cutting government spending. I think that you have to do both,” Bhungalia said.
Immigration reform is the other top issue Bhungalia cares about. It’s been delayed. Like him, three out of four Asian-American adults were born in a foreign country and are watching the debate on immigration.
Recommended: Obama accuses Romney of shifting positions
The outreach to voters like Bhungalia has not matched the potential payoff. A recent study by APIAVote in association with Lake Research Partners found 23 percent of Asian-Americans had been contacted by the Democratic Party, and 17 percent by the Republican Party, in the last two years. Some community leaders believe both Obama and Romney could do more. Mee Moua of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice in Washington, D.C. says Asian-Americans need to be considered.
“As we head toward election day, candidates and political parties will step up their voter engagement efforts,” said Moua. “Those who want to succeed will recognize the importance of the Asian-American voter. Those who ignore us, do so at their own peril.”
At APIAVote’s Presidential Town Hall in Fairfax, Va., in July, neither candidate showed up, sending videos and surrogates instead. The Romney campaign had bumper stickers in several different Asian languages, and both Obama and Romney have Asian-American outreach information on their campaign websites.
Obama’s message to Asian-American voters
Romney’s message to Asian-American voters
Donation Rates
A third consideration: Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders are not afraid to use their economic muscle. (Despite being half to a third the size, the group’s combined consumer and business spending power of almost $1.2 trillion equals African-Americans and just trails Latinos.) They equaled whites for the highest rate of donation to political campaigns in the last election: 13 percent. This was higher than African-Americans (8 percent) and Latino-Americans (5 percent). As the economy faltered, Asian-Americans so far this cycle have donated at 11 percent.
These characteristics might be attractive to candidates, but there are challenges. This group is complex: representing 49 different countries of origin and more than 100 languages. And the community leaders don’t always coordinate well given their varied backgrounds and histories.
Video: Romney surrogate answers town hall questions from Asian-American voters
Joe Watkins, who was an aide to President George H.W. Bush, says there is one common denominator: “Asian-Americans like everyone else just want to be considered Americans, and when candidates reach out to them as such, as American voters, I think they're thrilled by that.”
After the landmark 2008 election, enthusiasm has ebbed. Voter ID and registration law battles across the country have cast concerns. And in places like Florida, early registration levels are less than half what they were four years ago. With such serious questions about turnout, Asian-American and Pacific Islanders could be 2012’s ultimate swing vote.

A Vote for Obama is a Vote for prosperity -
Even Republicans should vote for Obama because Democrats' policies tend to produce more national wealth which Republicans have pocketed as much as they can. Just look at the roaring '90s - which produced tons of snobbish Republican millionaires and billionaires.
Pigotry.... put the crack pipe down and move away from the keyboard. What an absolutely factless statement. One party believes in high taxes and government dependency, the other in free enterprise and personal responsibility. One party believes the government can set policies that favor specific industries and harsh regulations for industries their ideology doesn't agree with, the other party favors less regulations and free enterprise. One party believes that government can manage your money better than you can, the other believes in allowing you to make decisions including what charities to support with your money. Guess which is the party of prosperity. I've seen your posts before Pigotry, you've made comments that are so ridiculous, I figure I'll call you on this one. Guess which party is in charge now where the economy has tanked for 4 straight years, where we're now facing $4 to $5 gasoline prices, where health care costs have increased 25%, where 47 million people are on food stamps... can you guess. This president and the policies of the Democrats are destroying this nation.
One party believes in license and irresponsibility, making the rich richer, leading to Great Depression and Great Recession, destroying the Middle Class and the Poor who did not cause depression or recession but have suffered so much because of depressions and recessions. If you count 'reckless driving' as freedom.
The other party believes in personal responsibility and necessary regulation to benefit ALL, at the same promoting free enterprise. Speed limit is just fine (and necessary regulation).
Mitt doesn't care about the bottom 47%..?????? ................... craziness
Mitt, Shame on You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mitt cares more than Obama
Shame on the Liar in Chief.............
dobi...
I agree with you -
Mitt cares so much about cutting his own taxes..much more
Mitt cares so much about outsourcing more jobs..much much more.
Mitt cares so much about Cayman Islands ...way more
Mitt cares so much about making the 1% even richer at the expense of the 47% he couldn't care less.
Mitt cares so much about his dog on his car roof...much much more.
Pigotry, It would be nice if you ever came up with something besides the same old, same old. You're repetitious and boring.
hi, barb ....... U R barbing up the wrong pig (tree) here?
I have learned from the GOP tactics, repeating lies until lies sound like truth..the only difference is I have repeated TRUTH so TRUTH can finally shine forth, waking up the sleepy Silent Majority.
Only Truth is worth repeating...for example, Mitt doesn't care about the bottom 47% - that's true, he said it, we all have heard him saying it. It's worth repeating
Pigotry
The wealth gap always grows. Funny how it grows faster under democrat congresses than Republican ones. It is bigger today than it was in 2008. I can tell you why. Business quit investing large sums into new products and facilities to produce them. That is because of this adminstrations policies, not just the crash in 2008.
Just 2 weeks ago in the money seciton here was explaining how businesses were hunkering down because they saw Obama was ahead in the polls. There, right here on nbc, how about that? Maybe you should spend more time reading, than writing uninformed posts.
D B Akron...no one has monopoly over truth...
.
but if your data are correct...I won't be surprised..both parties are ... in a sense... guilty of being pro-top 1%. Although both parties seem to attack each other about wealth gap, for example, but there are not much policy differences between the two parties that both have always pandered to the rich. The difference is often only in their rhetoric, not substance of policies, until, of course, the Tea Party movement that has made a difference in the GOP
Seriously, are there any other consequential races voting for Romney but whites?
Lets see-
50% Whites - Obama
83% Latinos - Obama
94% African Americans - Obama
81% Asian Americans - Obama
Wow, how do Republicans win without support of these folks?
Whats even scarier is the fact that Latinos are out-pacing all other races in terms of population growth by an eye raising 4 births to 1 for the other races...
The Repubs cannot just rely on the rural white vote anymore...doing that would be suicidal for future elections...
well, the best predictor of presidential elections is not really race, but party loyalty ... so if GOP can get someone like Dwight Eisenhower, there will be enough to declare themselves Republicans and vote a Republican into the White House.
Doc Holiday - but they will get all the rural white votes - or the backward rural white votes, anyway. Did you read about the Republican Senator who screamed that evolution is false and facts about evolution are from the pits of hell! Yeah, those are the people we need running the country - NOT!
Obama/Biden 2012
ROMENY / RYAN 2012!!!
Kumar..
we can agree to disagree agreeably.
I might disagree with you, but I will fight for your freedom to say what you want (to paraphrase Voltaire).
Obama/Biden 2012
Ain't no way any body with any intelligence would vote for that Idiot Obummer, signed, one pissed off Independent...........
Doc Hollday, go back to Tombstone, maybe all you stupid folks can be eliminated at the O.K. Corral
We the people don't need a Crook, Liar or a Clown in the White House Mr. Romney !!!!!!!!!!!!!
R & R Will Burn in Hell and the TeaHoles are going down with him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Dude, Go sleep it off !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God, guns, gold - that's all you need to know!
Barbara -1012158
Yea, Pigotry, they'd rather have someone that changes their tune daily... like Romney. He's much more entertaining, you boring ole truthful person you. LOL
Patriotic American U.S.A. and wire557:
Okay, which one of you is going to be the first kid to say, "My dad can beat your dad" or "Your mom wears combat boots". Childish!
Same goes for How about this?, the first person to refer to our President by a "clever" name that is not his. Grow up!
By NBC's Richard Lui.....You are kidding, right ?
Heya Richard....who is going to be the next "target group" ?
Wait a minute.....you have to write something to keep your job.
This Presidential election results will be determined by ONE GROUP and ONE GROUP ONLY: American voters.....PERIOD.
And the Organizer-in-Chief is going to get VOTED OUT OF OFFICE. Heck, he cannot defend his FAILED domestic and International policies, so expect more ATTACK ADS saying Gov. Romney is a liar, a cheat, a felon, and a fraud. Typical Chicago politics which is going to sink the ObamaShip laden with his flock.
Patriotic American USA, I agree with you the more. Mr. Rob-me and Mr. Run-away are the most crooked american I have ever come across. Mr. Rob-me has a long history of been a crook. For his grandfather to runaway to Mexico to evade the laws of USA does not show any patriotism. This generational curse has followed little grandson Mr. Rob-me for evading taxes and keeping his money out of the country. How can Americans be so blind as to not see this guy is a business savvy crook? He even rob the sponsors in the secret 47% Tape just to please them, to pay the 100% suddenly he loves to take care of. He is not a man of his word. He will "rob Peter to pay Paul". Hope those secret meeting sponsors withdraw their funds from his campaign. he should not be trusted, a liar and a thief. "Jankoliko - piggin English for a thief". I hope President Obama trash this guy next debate.
Asians are good at math. That's why they don't fall victim to the lies spewed by the left media and flock to Obama's "cause".
As John McLaughlin said after viewing the general demographics at the last Republican convention "It's going to be tough to keep these going. We're running out of angry old white men."
Clearly, their platform seems to solely address the needs of the Corporate Oligarchy and religious zealotry which destroy the middle class and personal freedoms respectively. Kind of hard to keep too many people of differing creed and color interested in voting for that unless they think Anybody But (black man) Obama, don't you think?
Mitt the Vulture wants to eat Big Bird alive..
well, that's what a Vulture does, right? eating other weaker birds
Big Bird and the rest of the Sesame gang are part of a multimillion dollar company. What started as a show teaching children letters and numbers has become one giant commercial for Sesame merchandise. We need to support that with tax dollars? Give me a break.
The total federal dollars put into PBS is less than .0001% of the budget. Compared to the pentagon which accounts for 54% of the TOTAL BUDGET COSTS for largely criminal and destructive wars. That PBS money wouldn't pay for THREE HOURS OF ONE DAY. Throw in ALL MONEY SPENT ON HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION AND HOUSING AND YOU STILL ARE LESS THAN 25% OF THE PENTAGON'S BUDGET.
AND ROMNEY WANTS TO GIVE THEM 2 TRILLION MORE THAN THEY WANT?!?!?!!!!
AND CUTTING PBS FUNDING IS THE "SOLUTION" TO THE BUDGET PROBLEM?!?!?!!!!
MAYBE THIS WORKS WHEN YOU WEAR MAGIC UNDERWEAR (at least in your mind).
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012 STOP WWIII AND OTHER ROMNEY DISASTERS!!!!!
The point zflynn is if you look at every "little" $billion plus "giveaway" it all adds up. By defending every little "giveaway" you never cut the budget and they end up adding more to shore up their next election. I don't care what percentage of the budget any one particular TAXPAYER dollar (you said federal the government doesn't have any money, they are confiscating hard working taxpayers money and spending at THEIR (politicians) discretion) goes to, if it is not necessary spending then those BILLIONS of dollars could be used to help fund the very programs you used in your post.
Will some one please make up my mind.
First they said the black vote would swing the election. Then they said the Latino vote would. Now they are saying the Asian vote will. Guess what ??? They are all still clueless and are tilting at wind mills.
As an American of Chinese descent, I hope to do just that. I have voted Libertarian in NC for the last 24 years. The Democrats is the party that is closest aligned with the Communist Party. The Communist Party USA endorsed Obama in 2008. Surprise. Obama must go.
Pigotry is RIGHT. A vote for the liar Romney is a vote for Nixon and Bush and Rove and all the other Republican criminals. A vote for the liar Romney is a vote for the republican party that destroyed this country from 1994-2008, that brought us 2 immoral and useless wars, that created an insurmountable deficit and debt, and that was losing 800,000 jobs per month for over 2 years. A vote for the Republican criminals is a vote against your children and the future of the USA. Republicans created the Great Recession and the Great Debt and murdered 1,000,000 innocent people in Iraq in the name of oil. Republicans are not fit for jail...only for the garbage and for "lessons learned" from history.
Obama symbolizes redistribution of wealth through government coercion, loss of freedom, goodbye to the Land of Opportunity and end of America as the great innovator.
During the 'momentus' debate, Obama let slip a little something that some of us caught. He spoke of how he would 'channel' business. Interesting choice of words.
Robert: Your soapbox is a mite narrow in scope. Flame away, however, posting some facts to support your diatribe would be helpful, you really need to do some research into when, where and how the financial collapse got its roots. Start with Carter and The Community Reinvestment Act, then look at Clinton and the repeal of Glass-Steagall, along with Obama's stint as a lawyer for ACORN. Note that all three mentioned were democrats. Then, the democrats Maxine Waters, Barney Franks and Nancy Pelosi all told Bush to pound sand when he brought up the potential problems with Freddie/Fannie and the possible housing bubble. Soapboxes are generally ignored, most of those who climb on them and spouting off are considered nuts.
Republicans say they are for less taxes, but they have shown double standards in wanting to give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires while increasing taxes on the poor. Don’t believe it?
Dr_Noo: God, guns, gold - that's all you need to know!
Actually it's God - that's all you need to know! You don't know that God is all you need until God is all you got.
Instead of all the hyphenation; why not use the term Americanish. There not really American they're only kinda like an American.
So we can call you smartish? Not really smart, only kind of like a smart person.
cunical - they are true Americans. Just like those of us who have roots in Germany or Ireland or anyone who isn't a Native American. See how that works?
Obama/Biden 2012 for ALL Americans
Asian-Americans are very intelligence people, they know Romney & Ryan are Phonies !!!!!!!!
Romney will not get the Asian vote because they are to smart for that, Robmehood is finish for his lying on the debate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Patriotic America- Yes, Asian-American are "very intelligence people". Too bad you aren't and you will be voting in the next election.
Smarter then you if you are voting for the two R & R Clowns !!!!!!!!!!!!
Smarter THAN.
Really, the public school system did a great job of dumbing down and indoctrinating entire generations of Democratic voters. Keep 'em dumb and uninformed and they'll never see you robbing the country blind and living the high life in Washington.
Why are most Congressmen and Senators millionaires? Most have never held a job outside of public service. Millionaires thanks to your taxes, and now they've convinced you they need more and more of your taxes to help the "little people" while you fight each other like opposing football teams.
Dumber than most if you think Obama cares about anything but your vote. He didn't even care enough to show up for the debate. Forget about the black vote, the Hispanic vote, the women's vote, and the Asian vote. He's got the dumb vote, and he'll win if they can figure out how to pull the right lever.
John Doe -- you are so right about Asians being good at math. They put 2 and 2 together = why vote in a republican regime that brought us to our economic knees in the first place? Seems we have all forgotten about the 8 yrs. of Bush/Republicans & banking/wall st./housing shenanigans.
Seems we have all forgotten about the 8 yrs. of Bush/Republicans & banking/wall st./housing shenanigans.
Maybe we need Obama to remind us a couple of thousand more times. The first million and a half times he blamed Bush for his own abysmal performance apparently wasn't enough for you.
Native-Americans are actually Asian-Americans. Native-Asian-Americans are the first illegal/legal immigrants and crossed the border from what is now Russia to what is now Alaska. I know, I know, it's not PC to tell the truth.
Americans. Period.
Not Asian-Americans or African-Americans or Polish-Americans.
If you have dual citizenship, or were born in a foreign country and are in the process of getting citizenship here, then I can see the hyphenated moniker being appropriate UNTIL YOU GET CITIZENSHIP.
If you have taken the Oath of Citizenship (in which you renounce allegiance to all other prior nations) you are an American. I wish EVERY person in America would voluntarily and meaningfully take the Oath, but since I know that'll never happen (too many people who were lucky enough to be born here don't accept the responsibilities associated with citizenship--military service, jury duty, etc.), the next best thing is if you can repeat the Pledge of Allegiance and REALLY mean what you say then you are an American.
I am an American. Not Asian-American. I was stateless as an infant and adopted here, that means America is the only country I have ever and will ever be able to call home, and I have never considered myself NOT American, not even during the three years I spent in deportation as an undocumented (my citizenship stripped because USCIS found they lost my adoption paper 18 years after my adoption, and i couldn't give them a copy because I was never told I was adopted before dad and Mom died in a car accident.) I hated being kicked and hit and spit on by deportation camp guards for calling myself an American, and the best moment of my life was the day when I got a copy of that paper and was finally able to take the Oath and walk out of the deportation camp as an American citizen once again.
Don't call me an Asian American--it does not, in any way, indicate anything significant about me. I have no original birth certificate that says I was born in any Asian country--or anywhere else for that matter; no Asian country would accept me when Homeland Security tried to find a place to deport me to--as a result, I faced indefinite detention until I could find the adoption paper and America is the only home country I have ever had, ever will have, or even want.
So. American. Let's get that right first.
(Sorry--I get really annoyed when the first thing out of someone's mouth is 'where are you from?' or 'what nationality are you?', like that is the only thing that matters. Or when someone calls me 'Asian-American.' I did not spend three years in deportation fighting for the right to call myself AN AMERICAN just to have you take that away from me!)
Republicans say they are for less taxes and less government but when it comes to people who make less than $20,000 a year, Republicans want to increase their Taxes and decrease taxes for the rich.
In 2008 President obama got over 60% of the asian vote, im pretty sure he will do alot better than romney when it comes to asian voters althought of course he wont get 100%. Im just waiting for the RWNJ's lol lol to say they only voted for him becasue they want hand outs even thought they already have the highest incomes and educational attainments.
I have a ton of Vietnamese friends along with my girlfriend and none of them, i mean none of them are voting for Obama... vilch... so keep reaching, this ain't 2008 anymore...Obama's record and inability to lead will make him a one term disaster.
Are you really that naive someone also said that they had tons of hispanic friends that arent voting for obama either, look how true that stands lmao.
LMAO - Sane America. You have a "ton" of Vietnamese friends huh? Using that word telegraphs that you are at the least exaggerating and at the most lying. I'm Vietnamese, and about 80% of the Vietnamese I know (I wouldn't be stupid enough to claim that I know a TON, but I'm betting I know more than you) are voting Obama.
I'm sorry, but you smell like someone making up @!$%# to support your argument. I bet you don't even have a girlfriend - let alone that she's Vietnamese.
Sane America, I seriously doubt you have any Asian friends. In fact, you probably don't have any minority friends. Your kind is despised non-whites. That's why you hate Obama. It's really that simple.
The American people know a Phony when they see one and that's Romney, this Clown is Waterboarding our Economy & Country for his 1% buddies, this is beyond sick !!!!!!!!!
Hope the Koch Baggers go to Hell, don't let the Mega Rich buy our Democracy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey burns, #3.4, I second that, the dude is a Phony like his Party !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a dog-friend and know a TON of dogs... absolutely NONE of them are voting for Romney!
Interesting...I personally know 23 Asian-Americans...absolutely NONE of them are voting for Obama - None, zilch, rei (Japanese for zero). When asked why - the answer is exactly the same...he's a weak Leader! When asked if they would vote for Romney - 15 say definitively Yes, 4 say probably and 4 say undecided.
FYI: of the 23, 7 are Japanese, 11 are Korean, 3 are Philippine and 2 are Chinese. 10 say that they voted for Obama in 2008, 3 say they voted for McCain, 6 were not US citizens in 2008 and 4 do not say. So I question the above comment that Obama attacks 80+% of Asian-Americans in 2012.
I also personally know 7 Afro-Americans who ALL voted for Obama in 2008 - today only 1 says that they will definitely vote for Obama in 2012. So I question the above comment that Obama attacks 94% of Afro-Americans in 2012.
Also, Pew Research has recently reported that in 2008 approx 22,000,000 Americans aged 18-29 voted in 2008. In 2012 that age group is NOT as invested in the election and it is estimated that only about 14,000,000 in that age group will most likely vote in 2012.
So, based on what I see - Obama is NOT going to pull the numbers that he did four years ago. This will be a very close race, right down to election day. Several people have commented that only people living in caves or who are brain-dead have NOT made up their mind yet for whom to cast a vote. Let me answer those folks right here - I am an UNDECIDED voter...I DO NOT live in a cave and am glad to be a card carrying MENSA International member. I like neither Obama nor Romney. I much prefer a candidate who would actually work for the American people more than their respective Party.
In 2008, I COULD NOT/WOULD NOT vote for McCain, so I held my breath and voted for Obama - hoping that he WOULD/COULD bring the Leadership this Country so desperately needs. Unfortunately he has FAILED miserably and completely in that regard - he DOES NOT deserve my vote this year. Does that mean that Romney does deserve it? Not exactly...but after Wednesday Night's Debate - if the election was held today - I would have to vote for him. With that said...I hate that intelligent, educated Americans have such poor choices from which to choose. I am personally tired of having to choose the lessor of two evils. When will the American People demand BETTER - and thus GET BETTER candidates?
Independent.
When will Americans get a real choice? Never, as long as it takes a millionaire with skin so thick you're able to withstand the vicious attacks you and your family must endure to run a campaign. Only the super egos can survive, and super egos make decisions based on what THEY want, not what you need. And what they want is power. Jobs? The only job they're interested in is their own.
I keep thinking we can't stoop any lower, but I haven't seen either candidate accused of child molestation, so I guess we can still sink just a bit lower, and I won't be surprised when we do.
We have to join together and demand reform, but both sides have done an excellent job of keeping the people fighting each other and voting a party instead of a candidate. Does it make sense that all Democrats are good, honest and caring, while all Republicans are greedy, evil and hateful? Yet if you read these posts, many believe that. They have no idea of the candidate's policy position, they just know the other "team" sucks and deserves to be treated with scorn and increasingly, threats of violence. Who would want to run in that atmosphere?
There's not much difference between Obama and Romney. Both are good men, both have flaws. What this country needs is to clear out congress and the senate and get people who are willing to work for the country for a short time, 2 terms and out. We need limits on campaigning time too. It seems like Obama has not stopped campaigning for the last 5 years.
Independent Reasoning
It's amazing that someone of your intelligence could allow your vote to be swayed so by an ACT. Romney has shifted from one end of the spectrum to the other in every way possible and did it in spades in this debate. Was it the persuasiveness of his lies? Just curious. Your answer will determine if I believe one word of your post.
My vote is based on how well Obama has done what he promised. He failed and does not deserve 4 more years. So I'm not voting for someone as much as voting against. And I really don't care if you believe any of my postsl.
Jrsygrl;
Absolutely CORRECT! Look at the money that is being WASTED by the LEFT & the RIGHT this election cycle. How many mouths could be fed? How many homeless could be sheltered? How much medical assistance/research could be accomplished? BUT NO...we now need to spend $Billions so the two-party's can BOTH maintain their respective lies and "Dumb-Down" the American People further and further.
When will "WE" learn and demand better.
LMarcT;
You're right! My vote was swayed by an ACT 4-years ago as well when I WASTED my vote on Obama/Biden '08!!!!
And to be honest LMarcT...I could care less if you believe me or not. You will vote for a candidate you KNOW is a LIAR. I might vote for one who MIGHT be a LIAR. I think that would be you calling the kettle black!!!!!
At least when I voted for Bush '43 in 2000, I realized that mistake and DID NOT repeat it in '04. Same with Bush '41 and Carter - One & Done!!!!!
Time to do the same...One & Done! It's the only chance we have at forcing CHANGE...holding ALL elected officials accountable. If they DO NOT perform as promised - vote them out and someone else in until we get something that at least resembles "LEADERSHIP" (We haven't had any of that for at least 12-years)!!!
I agree, we should be voting at every election based on how the kept their promises in their current position and what they have accomplished for the good of ALL their constituents (not pandering to any one group). If they've done their job then they get re-elected, if not boot them out -- it is the only way to keep a group of politicians accountable ON the job, not just campaigning and pandering to get re-elected. But as long as they "pander" to the right group with empty promises and tossing free programs that often get abused by some people those very people will vote for the guy giving them the phone.
I'm Vietnamese living in Northern Virginia. I'm involved in several organizations in the community to raise awareness of social issues and health issues in the asian american community. I can tell you that a vast majority of us will be voting for Romney. We are open minded enough to see the effects of Obama's policies on the local economy and business. We are mostly independents for a reason. We don't subscribe to typical stereotypes of the parties, but vote for what is best for the country.
Pigotry,
I know your ideas are important to you, but name one Democrat policy that has improved the US economy? The only thing Democrat policies produce is government dependency. If Americans wanted socialism they would be living in europe. I left europe to get away from socialism. You have no idea what you are wishing for unless you are on the government dole.
So Social Security, Medicare, the EPA, the National Labor Relations Board, NASA, the Department of Education, NOAA, and countless other government programs and agencies do nothing but produce government dependency? If you really believe that crap you don't deserve to live here. I got an Island off the coast of New Zealand you might be interested in.
And they are all Democrat programs? Is that what you are inferring, of course government programs are necessary but what the heck... 1.1 trillion more than we take in in costs to run those programs, something is out of wack and it isn't the level of taxation, its the ridiculous spending programs and the free give aways by this government. I mean 30% fraud in Medicare, 40% fraud in food stamps.. the point is that government is a bloating monster that continously needs to feed itself and the larger it gets the less accountability there is. How many programs are ever cut altogether once they are started? This government has become an intrusive over regulated behemoth that needs to be reduced.
h engbers...R U a little h (high)?
But I am glad Sane and James have satisfied your curiosities.
But do you know how much government giveaways to major pharma-corporations, such as dozens of billions of dollars in just one obscure clause of the 2003 Medicare senior prescription drug benefit law of Bush. If you are part of those pharmaceuticals, you might just brag to the bottom 47% that the money is your hard-earned money, not corporate welfare?
But such govt giveaways have added to the federal deficit and made Medicare less competitive and less sustainable - and a Bush reform making Medicare less sustainable and now Republicans are crying about entitlements too costly - why? because of government giveaways to major corporations. You think there might be 'vast right wing conspiracy?
Why don't you go to your island off new Zealand. Oh wait, they are socialists down under. Better you form your own right-wing paradise in a deserted island..

Apparently a few will... or was your leader lying again? Virtually everything Romney "liked" or called "his plan" the other night had roots as Democratic policies. Because now he won't be dismantling Medicare or Medicaid or Social Security... nor will he completely dismantle Obamacare... nor will he cut taxes for the rich or increase taxes for the middle class... and he cares "deeply" for those f#$kin... oops... for thoses poor 47% souls... he LIKES the 47% now!
If this wasn't such a f#$king miracle, I think I'd throw up.
What he said was he can't worry about those people who think they are victims and the government owes them something, because they will vote for Obama no matter what. Get it -- he's not worried about getting them to VOTE for him, because they never will. That's what both candidates are doing, spending their time and money on people who are likely to vote for them or can be convinced to, and not worrying about those that will NEVER vote for them.
Does Obama not care about the red states? He's not spending much time there. I'm sure if you put up a secret camera at the beginning of his campaign, you'd hear him saying the same thing. "I'm not going to spend any time in those red states, I'll concentrate on the swing states."
He did make a speech about needing to keep his core voting for him -- the blacks, the hispanics, the women and the youth. He left out the white males. Does that mean he will ignore the needs of all white men?
Both sides are making some ridiculous claims. You really look silly just repeating the talking points without thought. The liberal media went nuts when Obama didn't bring this point up in the debates. He knew it was stupid and so did his "handlers" but he also knows the uninformed and unsophisticated voter will keep it alive and keep drinking that Kool-Aid.
Obama said much the same thing by his performance at the debate. "I don't have to work hard, the people who are victims and think the government owes them something will vote for me no matter what a crappy job I do."
h engbers: So why go to the US? Why not come to China? They're not socialist (nor communist, don't let the name of the ruling junta fool you).
asian americans could impact election....just like vegetarian americans, pink americans, white americans, black americans, rich ones, poor ones.... very insightful analysis.
jrsygrl -- SPOT ON!!!!! Couldn't have said it better myself. The left and liberal media are once again spinning, distorting, and outright lying when they said Romney doesn't care about the 47% or he threw out the 47%, etc. It's a shame the people LIE about what Romney says but then BO spews "you didn't build that" to the small business company and they LIE about what he meant because they repeated almost verbatim what BO said to defend the statement. So they'll believe whatever comes out of the media and WH to maintain their style of life, which usually entails some sort of taxpayer handout they throw at them. It's like giving meth to a junkie.
Typical response from the Faux (FOX) Network believe all they "report". Boy, have O'Reilly and Hannity got you bamboozled.
The thing is that viewing Asian-Americans as a single demographic is painting with way too wide of a brush. There are far too many cultures, religions, and political viewpoints represented to think that people with Asian heritage form a single voting bloc.
Scott... agreed. But the opposite is true as well. They're in the AMERICAN voting block... you know... those that include everyone and exclude no one?... not exactly the Republican mantra of late, from what I've seen.
Asian Americans are just about the only demographic that the GOP has not demeaned, denigrated, disparaged or outright attacked. Gee, they missed one!
Give them time....
Right, I am sure if they think about it for a little while they will come up with something to hate about Asian Americans. Yeah, like accusations of those slandy eyed heathen gooks taking jobs away from real Americans! sarc/
Wow dude, that's really offensive.
take a look at comment #2, its even worse when they're sincere...
or comment #11
James,
are you kidding me? Have you read any of the articles about happenings in Japan or revisiting Pearl Harbor? There are plenty of Republicans who still hate the Japanese for Pearl Harbor. If you mean the GOP echelons then you are right, although I suspect Beck and Rush have somewhere, buried under the plants worth of crap they have spewed during this election cycle, bashing some Asians here and there.
There are plenty of Democrats who still hate the Japanese for Pearl Harbor too. Like my Democrat voting, union loving uncle who refuses to buy anything Japanese. He and his army pals will never forget, never forgive. And let's not forget Rosie ODonnell's hysterical imitation of Asian accents.
You'd probably be able to find something offensive Biden has said about Asians , but sure, it's only the GOP that are bigoted and ignorant. Be careful crossing the street wearing those blinders you've got on.
James-316346
They shouldn't feel left out. The GOP insults EVERYONE's intelligence.
BTW, is China "Asian"? Just asking. Thought I heard a few Romneyisms aimed at them.
How about the biggest Democrat in the 20th century, Robert C Byrd. A fine member of the KKK, they are a non hate group right. I bet you he loved the Africans, Asians, and Hispanics.
Other democrats that preach hate: Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Harry Reed, Rosy O'Donnell, Bill Maher, and the Black Panthers, just to name a few.
It's one of the few groups of Americans the current admin can't buy off with free phones. They are intelligent, articulate, and industrious. They also take care of their family, in that mom and dad ALWAYS has a place to live their children take care of them in their old age so they don't have to be dependent on the government. Unlike a lot of other groups that the current admin buys off with phones, food stamps, free medical care, sec 8 housing, promises of more -- buying off with TAXPAYER money. You're a fool and lapdog for the liberal left, keep spinning -- good little doggie!
What a pile of crap article. The next headline should read, "LEFT HANDED PEOPLE COULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE". How many ways can the media divide people?
Left handed people are the only one's that can check the check-box and still read what/who they're voting for... could make a difference... your right!
John Magnusson;
I, like many are left handed (actually I'm ambidextrous with everything but writing) and if others are like myself...we very well MIGHT IMPACT the Presidential Race...as we are Undecided (at least I am).
I WILL NOT re-vote for Obama - he has DONE NOTHING that he Promised in 2008 - and thus DOES NOT Deserve my vote. So I have to decide if I will lend my vote to Romney, vote for someone who deserves my vote like a Gary Johnson or T.J. O'Hara or simply NOT cast a vote for President this year.
Maybe beginning November 7th, more and more Americans will begin to DEMAND better candidates. It's too important a task for us to allow such WEAK, INEPT candidates to be the choices we are given.
Time for the two-party system to finally see some legitimate competition...hell anything other than the Dem's or GOP's would be an improvement!!!!
It is ridiculous. They will divide people up to get a reaction and readership.Very pathetic if you ask me.
Don't bet on it most Asians are Republicans
Most of them most certainly weren't republican in 2008 and i highly doubt that the number dropped liked 30 points lol
Not really. Gallup wrote an article entitled 'Asian-Americans Lean Left Politically'. You can google it if you wish.
Things have changed since 2008 !!!!! The Asian ppl know who is who !!!
unemployment rates among Asian Americans is 4.3 % the lowest of any ethnic group in America.
They are well educated, largely small business owners, and probably the most self sufficient demographic group in America
They have been largely unscathed by the economy because they support their own communities and invest their capital back into it
it will be very interesting to see where their votes go and I do believe if they break right it could make a difference.
I don't know that they will feel the need for change as much as other sectors of the population may
not necessarily true... Asian Americans have more conservative fiscal tendencies and at one time were more socially conservative put lean more progressive today
what will make a difference is how regulation and taxation has effected their businesses over the last 4 years
like I said with an unemployment rate of 4.3% they may not feel a need for change
Good! I am so sick and tired of hearing it's all about the Hispanics or Latinos, or whatever you want to call them. There are so many ethnicities and races that make up this country. It's not about the illegals, as they aren't SUPPOSED to be able to vote, though we will never know, considering the Democrats will stop at nothing to make sure no one knows for sure. This should ONLY be about the AMERICANS and what is needed to make this a great country again.
NME, hate to break into your ignorant bubble, but Hispanics have been in the United States before the Pilgrims ran out of beer and landed at Plymouth, St. Augustine, oldest American City, 1565. Get over your bigotry and ignorance, might be refreshing to your soul.
So many ethnicity's of course that's what America is all about, dunderhead. And where did your clan start out, unless you are a Native American you had to come from somewhere else.
Obama 2012
skyparrot, read your history. "Hispanics" did not settle this country, SPAIN did. "Mexico" never created a single city, village or town in North America. The Spanish did and then, handed them over to Mexico. Mexico only held the territory that Spain conquered and gave them for 35 years before the U.S. bought it from them after the war. The Hispanic ethnicity only came about when the Spanish started breeding with the Central and South American tribes that made up the population of what became Mexico and other countries. I am not the ignorant one here.
As for my "clan", we came here LEGALLY, as opposed to 12-20 million of the "Hispanics" that can't seem to follow the laws of the country they are invading, and THEN demanding that WE change our laws to suit them and their law-breaking families.
As for being a bigot, I do not conform to the definition of a bigot. I admire the Hispanic culture and some of the people. What I object to is the ones that break our laws and then try to force us to change them. If it was the Asians doing the same thing, I would object to them; same as the Europeans or the Africans. In this case, it's the Hispanics and I am tired of hearing it's all about them.
I can definitely see the Asian-American bloc breaking in Romney's favor, based primarily on his expertise in business and stated desire to cut government spending.
While both candidates bring interesting ideas to the table, I'm unimpressed by the President's decision to spend all his political capital over the past 4 years in crafting a one-size-fits-all approach to medical care instead of allowing the states to create their own solutions, on the off-chance that a solution for people in Illinois might just be different than the solution for a less-populous state like North Dakota or Alaska.
Based on the state-by-state approach alone, I'll be voting for Governor Romney.
To the people who worship Romney - if he wins the Presidency you can shout it to the world. But if President Obama is reelected then you will have to live with whether you like or not.
Remember these promises. Obama is a bolf face LIAR.

Obama 2012
Sorry to break it to skyparrot but the Democrats had everything the first two years and Obama could not even get his own party to vote with him unless he bribed them. Look at the health care bill, all the pork in it is bribes to the democrats to get them to vote on it other wise it would have failed.
Asian Americans have a stake in immigration too, and we all know how Romney feels about that, believe the Asian American vote is for the President.
Obama 2012
Please tell us, what is Romney's position on immigration, and how does that position affect the average Asian American?
That's the problem with you parrots, you can't tell the difference between a candidate's position on legal immigration and illegal immigration. No one is against legal immigration, and it's not the Asians who are sneaking across the border and demanding their rights.
So the fact that Obama is offering amnesty to Hispanics doesn't really impress anyone other than illegal Hispanics. And if you watch the video of Obama getting grilled on Univision, the Hispanics aren't that thrilled with Obama's broken promises on immigration reform either.
Told that raisin Jan Brewer that Arizona's Immigration Law was a model for the country, fact, google it.
Romney appeared orange at the Univision event, talk about pandering.
Obama 2012
llegal immigration. Fact. Google it.
Jrsygrl: please try and get info from multiple sources. There are plenty of ILLEGAL asian immigrants in this country, no they don't walk across the southern border they are much more sophisticated. Take a look at places like the San Francisco Bay area and Sacramento or Seattle. Many travel to Canada first as they are more lenient than the USA. They then walk or boat across our northern border. Another tactic is to pack themselves into shipping containers with enough food and water for the 2 week sail into west coast port cities. A third, a favorite of South koreans, is to apply for a tourist visa when they get pregnant, fly to the US and bith "anchor babies", return home and then use their citizen child as their sponsor for full legal status here.
Sorry, Carl,
Which news source will inform me of the Executive Order Obama passed to grant amnesty to Asians and allow them to compete for jobs with our unemployed and financial aid with our students? Which news sourse will inform me of the millions of illegal Asians marching in the streets waving their flags proudly declaring their illegal status and demanding their rights?
I know there are illegals from many countries, but Obama is only pandering to the Hispanics and the Hispanics are the only ones flaunting their illegal status and demanding we accommodate them. When posters such as skyparrot talk about the candidate's stand on "immigration" they are talking about granting amnesty to Hispanic illegals, not Asians, Russians, Middle Easterners or any other ethnic group.
Ang Filiipino ay boboto kay Obama!!! (Filipinos will vote for Obama!)
I've been to the Philippines, and trust me, the Philippine people are smarter than that. So the ones in America that can vote, won't be duped by the Democrats.
Let's all just face it the true republican party no longer exist. The teapublicans have drove them all out leaving the republican party in the dust. The sad part is they have also driven out those who believe in parties working together for America and not just wealthy old white men who want to dominate America as if they were kings and th rest of us should bow before them. Heres the good news most Americans will refused to bow to such idiocy as to what the teapublicans are offering. The dumb a** teapublicans have driven every minority away. They continue to run down women and gay folks and have already ran off black, Asian, hisspanic's. I guess that leaves just about every old white man in America to help them win an election. But do we really want a group of facist running this country that can't repersent everyone because of their hate, racist, and bigotry? I think not and no way will this group ever win back the presidency until they regroup and realize that the keys to the whitehouse can not be taken by force, lies, or fear. Hate to disappoint you repugs but your cause is lost because the guy you all put up played to hard to the right too long and Americans will not be fooled into votng for the Go back Team of Lying Romney and Ryan. Cry now or cry later but the teapug obstructi-CONS have destroyed the chances that a republicans had to win the whitehouse until at least 2020 because Hillary will make history when she wins in 2016 because four more years of the obstructi-CONS will assure her a win in 2016. People are sick and tired of a do nothing Congress and it will be stopped in 2016 if not in 2012 and you all know it whether or not you want to admit it. Obama will win in November so get the he** over it. It amazies me at the dumb right wing nut jobs that have been fooled by a party of facist calling themselves the GOP. They tell you they believe in free capita lism all the while refusing to create jobs and advance Americans for one purpose only and hey even told you it was to make the President a one term president. Yet you all have no problem what this has done to the real and strong America. Ever wonder how you can not get mad at those obstructi- CONS for what they did to hold America from being the power house we was during the Clinton years. No because you myfriend have been brain washed by the party of no playing on the true racist population who cannot move forward as they try to force you backwards into the box where you believe you belong. You repugs better wakeup and smell th roses before you get what your asking for with no one to blame except yourself for being so dumb.
Well the majority of you non Asians will love this information and post on this point, the new GOP/T-Republican (NEO-CON/KKK) Party can never make any gains with their racially segregated approach to the Asian community, but through religion they could actually make some gains. Yes, it's
true that, as a whole, the Asian American community is less religious than the
general population. But there are still large numbers of aparthied assemilated want to be white Asian Americans who do attend church regularly and are attending Evangelical and Protestant
denominations. These people are susceptible to voting Republican. (This could
apply to Latinos as well.) As an example, the religious right found great success in California during Prop
8 by targeting the Chinese and Korean churches.
To combat this, the Democractic Party must remind these Asian American Christians that these
same folks who supporting discriminating against gays and lesbians and trying to
take away a woman's right to make her own health-related choices, are simply
using them as temporary window dressing and that these are the same people who
would prevent them or their relatives from coming to this country or keep them
breaking the glass ceiling at work.
And these are the issues, not the Republican's embrace of the religious
right, that will keep Asian Americans out of the Republican party. It is these
racist, xenophobic elements (you know, the birthers, deathers, tea baggers,
Minutemen, secret KKK etc.) who are now driving the Republican agenda, that will continue
to drive Asian Americans towards the Democratic Party.
Immigration - According to the American Community Survey released by the
Census in 2007, over 60% of Asians living in American are
foreign-born. When Republican leaders continue to bash immigrants and try to deny them basic rights and
services, it really drives Asian Americans to not only register to
vote, but to vote against the Republican candidates and proposals. Based on the
vitriol and hate spewing from the healthcare debate, you can count on the
teabaggers to double up on the immigrant bashing. Notice that the loudest boo's
against Obama's healthcare bill before Congress was the lie that it would pay
for the care of undocumented immigrants. (I wonder if Jesus had a litmus test as
to who should receive healthcare.)
Discrimination in the workforce - While Asian Americans are the most
highly-educated racial group, we still are not represented in the highest
offices and boardrooms. In a 2005 Gallup Poll, 31% of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders
reported facing some workplace discrimination. That's the highest
of any group. The Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission released a study that showed that, despite having the
highest education level, they were less likely to be promoted to a managerial or
executive position. Democrats are more likely to address these issues, let alone
even acknowledge that they exist.
Racial-Profiling post 9/11 drove South Asians and Muslims accelerated the
movement of these communities towards the Democrats. Again, as the Republican
party stoked the anti-Muslim fears around the country, and it seems to be the
only thing working for them, you can count on more of the same.
President Obama and the Democrats in Congress and around the country can have
an impact on this direction and they are already showing some signs.
President Obama has appointed a record-number of Asian Americans to his
Cabinet and nominated quit a few Asian Americans to federal judgeships including
superb candidates Dolly Gee, Jacqueline Nguyen,Edward Chen and Denny Chin. This breaking of the
glass ceiling resonates in the community. And as we head into the debate on
immigration, the Democratic party can work on issues like family re-unification
and H1-B visas that will also appeal to our community. Perfect openings that
will continue this trend.
Desmoines Dem concludes:
Since the election of this first black to be President, frustrated displays of racial bigotry and prejudicial hate has come out of the wood works all over this country. This discusion about the Asian Americans political postion is just another display of a closeted bigot article discussing Asian Americans like they are not as American as the white Europen Americans (WHY???). The vast majority of people of all racial categories have some form of discrimination towards someone or something. Only when they become totally frustrated do they slip and let it out at an inappropriate time. The election of President Obama has brought lots of racial issues to the forefront to be dealt with. Now we need to deal with women's equal rights, sexual equal rights, harassment , and bullying. As we continue to heal the racial divide lets educate to heal the wounds.
The GOP/T-Republican party (NEO-CON/KKK) Party will never support the election of a woman, any person of color (Asians), Gays/Lesbians, to lead their party or be President of the USA.
Now the WORLD CONTINENTs VOTE in US Elections: that should bring out a brand new regime...of being owned and SLAVES...are us...ASAP! Welcome to what...which speaks what? How will the 47% get their Gov TEET Mongering complet?
Asian Americans are too smart to vote for the GOP. After all they believe in science! LOL
Asian Americans will definitely have an impact on the outcome of the race. Because they will vote for the guy who screws the American worker the best, the guy who will give prosperity and jobs to Asia, rather than here.
This is my constitutional rights to voice my opinions and concerns. America needs leadership, not puppets.
“Asian-Americans like everyone else just want to be considered Americans, and when candidates reach out to them as such, as American voters, I think they're thrilled by that” (from this news article).
The statement is some what racial commented. We, Asian-Americans, do not need to be considered Americans; we are Americans, either African-Americans or Irish-Americans, including any hyphenated American. What made Joe W. thought that Asian-Americans "want to be considered Americans" in the first place.
We, like other Americans, pay taxes, especially 98% of taxpayers, who have paid more than Romney, and some of them are even volunteering in their own community, and we do not have "to be considered Americans" and then we do the volunteering in our community; but we do it because we are Americans, and this is our nation, even though we have different colors of our skin.
Any hyphenated Americans is, by the way, sort of old thought. Moving forward is we are all Americans.
Go OBAMA 2012.
98% of taxpayers paid more than Romney? Really? If 98% paid taxes in the millions, I doubt we'd have such a problem with our national debt. I guess I should be happy my tax bill was just in the thousands since, according to you, 98% of people paid more than 1.94 million dollars in taxes last year.
jrs, I certainly paid more in payroll taxes than romney, considering he had no EARNED income.
Are you suggesting that people who have no EARNED income should pay payroll taxes? Silly boy.
Yes. Unearned income should be taxed the same as earned income. That includes payroll taxes. Why is this so difficult for you to understand?
Unearned income is considered to be that income which is not from wages, tips, or salaries. Examples of unearned income include income from capital gains, Social Security, child support and interest income. Some unearned income, such as Social Security, is non-taxable unless combined with other income, while income like capital gains is always taxed.
So you want to tax the college student cashing in his savings bonds, the single mother receiving child support and retired people with a part time job a higher rate because you don't think the
$1.94 million Romney paid in taxes is enough.
How patriotic of you.
Burn 12:
Actually it is TOTALLY Difficult to understand: Unearned income is often monies such as Interest Income, Capital Gains, Child Support, Alimony Payments, etc - which are ALL previously taxed at the "Income" stage of disbursement. Do you favor "Double taxation without Representation? Of course that is something that this Country was founded on...remember, some silly little argument about a boat in Boston Harbor and a bunch of tea!!!! Silly isn't it?
The real question is not how any given demographic will vote nationally, but how they will vote in the battleground states.
I haven't checked, but I presume that Americans of Asian descent are more heavily represented on the West coast and in the NE. As a group with a lot of successful small business owners and who are highly educated, they will tend to back whoever the local favorites are irrespective of party, because that's what small business owners and educated people do, so they'll tend toward support of Democrats, probably at the more or less the same rate as white small business owners and educated people in those same areas. This is hardly important for any candidate, because those areas would've gone Democratic anyway.
However, since (unlike other groups) Republicans haven't gone out of their way to offend Asian Americans (yet), they may be prepared to break the other way in non-Democratic areas.. again following whatever way the same socio-economic White demographic would break in those areas. This means that you could conceivably have a great deal of support for Republicans among Asian Americans in areas with Republican majorities or which are equally divided.
While you're waiting for the GOP to offend Asians, you might consider how those Asian small business owners feel hearing their president tell them "You didn't build that."
Except that republicans edited the rest of that statement. Obama said that the small business owner, which my parents are and I work my second job at, did not build the infastruture that they use to run their business, not that they didn't build their business. My parents run an after school tutoring service. It has taken years to build a client base and a reputation of success and professionalism. However we recognize that we " did not build"... the building we use, the streets our clients use to get to and from the store, the utilities such as electricity and water, we dont hand deliver the coursework to our distance learning student we us US Postal Service, we did not build the internet or the phone systems we use to communicate with or recruit new clients and so forth and so on. But hey don't let facts and full statements and context get in the way of your ideology.
Carl;
You and your parents may NOT have built the building, the roads, the power-grid, internet, phone lines, etc.
BUT your parents rent on the building they use for their business covers the "Property Taxes" to your local community which builds and maintains those roads, schools, police, fire, etc.; your parents should pay local Property Taxes on any equipment and/or inventory they use for their business; if they "sell" any actual "material" they hopefully are charging and paying "Sales Tax" to their state, again to build and maintain the roads, schools, teachers, etc; Your parents pay for the "Internet", the "Phone Bill" (which have taxes built into the bill for things like "Power Grid", "Internet", "Libraries", etc.), most likely water & sewer, Excise Tax on any company vehicles that they might use in conducting their business; your parents purchase gasoline to run those vehicles, which have "TAXES" for roads, highways, school, etc. Tolls, tires, oil changes, batteries, etc. - ALL of which contain taxes which are in place to cover those things that the "Government" supposedly builds for us (actually we build those things from the "Taxes" that we pay into the system - the Government does NOT pay for them).
Then when your parents get done working at their business - they go home to a place (either owned or rented) which then again pays "Property Taxes", Taxes on the "Phone Bill", "Internet", "Cable", "Electric", "Heating", "Water & Sewer", etc. Your parents then pay "TAXES" when they buy furnishing for your residence for things like clothes, bedding, furniture, non-food items i.e. cleaning products, laundry detergent, etc.
So when Elizabeth Warren and/or Barack Obama stand-up in front of thousands/millions of Americans and claims that "Businesses" DON'T contribute to the Tax Obligations to build and maintain America's roads, bridges, power grid, internet, libraries, teachers, fire fighters, police, EMT's, etc. - their claim is an OUTRIGHT LIE! And more importantly shows that neither Ms Warren or President Obama have a grasp on reality as it pertains to economics and/or business as it pertains to the United States of America.
And there are many uninformed citizens who believe these claims and actually think that those spewing them are intelligent and deserve consideration of our vote...that is the TRUE tragedy unfolding!!!!
Carl,
We know what he said, we know what he meant. He and others who think like him have said it before and much more succinctly.
He's not talking about the roads and buildings, he's saying you did not build that business without government help, you could not build it without government help, anyone could have built it thanks to government help, and so you don't deserve to profit from that business -- and if you don't "spread that wealth around" you are actually stealing from everyone else, so we need the government to "level the playing field."
Don't fall for the "edited tape" diversion.
Really????Always thought it would be the Hispanic vote. Ultimately it depends on voter turnout.
Asian-Americans, like most nonwhites, understand they're not welcome in the GOP. Republicans today are the party of old white men, who disdain people of color or non-European heritage . They'll soon be a minority party. Good riddance.
As an Asian-American, I will proudly vote for Mitt Romney as well as my state's GOP candidates for the Senate. There are A LOT of others like me that will be doing the same. Vote for who you want but don't tell me who I must vote for just because of my race.
For a white person to think that someone (of a different race) will or should vote Democrat simply because of their race is sheer stupidity and bigotry of the worst kind. ("I know what's best for you.") Liberals love collectivism and despise individualism, especially when exercised by minority persons.
Go ahead, vote for Willard. You should be aware of what the GOP base says about you when you're not there.
The author of this article is an asian american, but he is most likely wildly liberal as all journalists and you are right that liberals love putting people in buckets, especially when it comes to race. It's the height of stupidity to continue to insist there is such a thing as race based voting "blocks" as if people of the same race all vote the same way. Only whites are seen as individuals in this country, minorities can only exist as a "block" -- all look the same, think the same, act the same, consume the same way, vote the same way. And then these same liberals who perpetuate this view in the media every chance they get insist that Republicans are the racists.
The truth is most asians arrived in the US in the last 2 decades, most are probably not even citizens, and their children are too young to vote. Just like the "hispanic vote" fear that liberals love to cook up to force leniency in immigration, asians who are actually eligible to vote are an insignificant number, and they vote based on issues they care about like everyone else. This kind of stupid race based generalizations have got to stop.
living in China due to the state of economics, inflation, rising prices and unaffordable homes, I feel strongly that the Asian=Americans are diligent about their pension entitlements and will not wish to see SS go under. they will examine the records of both candidates and vote for the one who will provide a better future when in old age. Medicare is also very important to this American group and they will not wish to see entitlements cut as drastically as Mitt and Ryan are proposing. They also realize that the Tea Party and the GOP does not really recognize minorities and all social programs for that group will eventually be downsized, downgraded or done away with and this is not in their best interests.
the asian population fears social unrest more than anything else, and they wish to keep society cohesive, working and producing while at the same time allowing for a pension system that is honored after one has paid into it for such a long time. I do not see this group of hard working people swinging over to a party that espouses white supremacy.

Are you Asian-American or a white person who just likes to "inform" others of how Asians really think and act? If the former, you are wrong. If the latter, I for one resent your racist BS.
Song,
They not only know what all Asians think and feel, they also know that all Asians, and all minorities, need the government to take care of them because they're sure you can't possibly take care of yourself. They're convinced you'll vote for the party that will give you that free Obamaphone and free contraception and never catch on that you're stuck on the government plantation.
Miniority = poor = Democratic voter. (Liberal math)
